STRAIGHT WOMEN&DRAG by Maria Vargas

Playing Dress-Up

Twitter lit up with commentary, as fans discussed the drama and happily critiqued the performances. MamaPop.com, a pop culture blog run by mothers, featured episode recaps each week.

From glitzy productions in Las Vegas to shows in small town bars, drag attracts a diverse following that frequently includes straight women. Films like The Bird Cage, Kinky Boots, Breakfast on Pluto and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert attract

female viewers who are drawn to men dressed as women.

Interaction can be exhilarating. At the University Club in Gainesville, FL, club goers sit on the floor and crowd together in a tight circle around the performers. Itʼs not unusual for audience members to get heckled and pulled onto the stage for group mocking. Cheryl Nail, a mom who blogs and networks on Twitter, says, “I like going to drag queen clubs because it's a great place to have fun without worries of being hit upon — that is, until straight men begin to catch on and start prowling there, too.” Many women love the spirit of make-believe. Drag queens donʼt represent any of the boring parts of being a woman. Drag queens embody the glamour, grace and confidence that girls grow up wishing they had. Drag performers do “woman” better than most women do.

So whatʼs the appeal? Drag performers seem to embrace entertainCatherine Culbertson, a local writer, has seen ment with pure passion. Itʼs hard not to be several drag shows and even brought her inspired by the talent and showmanship seen on boyfriend along for one. “It's stage. For straight women, thereʼs also an an unprecedented level element of fantasy. Women who may not see interaction that makes much glamour in their everyday lives can live them fun. It's like eating vicariously through drag performers who dance at Arigato and getting a like goddesses in six-inch platform boots. good chef who throws his shrimp tails at you. When it comes to straight women at drag shows, most are there out of pure admiration and love for the spirit of drag and the talent of the dancers and female impersonators. But hereʼs a word to the wise: Bachelorette parties may want to pass on the drag show excursions — at least in Florida. Thereʼs something tacky about an excited bride celebrating her upcoming marriage with a community that doesnʼt have the right to get legally married. {

OMG!

You're a bit offended at times, but you keep coming back for more — just to see.”

When RuPaulʼs Drag Race debuted on the LOGO network, it developed an unlikely following. Straight women who regularly tuned in to Americaʼs Next Top Model and Project Runway were drawn to the familiar format, edgy humor, and of course — the drag queens.

FLIPPIN’ THE SCRIPT FLIPPIN

by James Styron

There are blonde jokes, gay jokes, even (gasp) dead baby jokes. But have you ever heard a straight joke? Me neither. Or, rather, I hadn’t until I found some bonus material of the animated Lego series Rick & Steve (a.k.a. The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World), courtesy of Logo.com. The first joke is straight from their little Lego heads; the rest are brought to you by your favorite OMG! characters. Enjoy!

What do you get when you cross a straight man and a straight woman? Three kids, a mistress, and two divorce lawyers. How is a straight man like a toddler? He needs a woman to take care of him, farts without warning, and is only happy with a bottle in his mouth. Where does a straight woman find sexual satisfaction? In the nightstand next to her bed. Which half of straight marriages end in divorce? The sober half.

How do you know all straight guys are gay? Their favorite things to do revolve around poles, balls, and other groups of men. What do you call a straight man with style, substance, and a personality? We’re not sure either, but let us know if you meet one. What’s the difference between the homes of lesbians and straight women? Lesbians actually like carpet; straight women wish they could have hardwood. Which straight men always have a six-pack? Alcoholics. What's more important to a married man than wearing his wedding ring? Remembering to put it back on before he gets home.
