TAKE ME BACK In fourth grade, my elementary school held a walk-athon. For hours and hours, we had to walk in circles around a huge playing field. I remember gasping and wheezing in the winter air, desperately wishing I had asthma so I could sit out.

I’ve never been big on fitness.

I’ve never been big on fitness.

Thanks to being taller than the rest of the girls in seventh grade, I ended up playing on the varsity girl’s basketball team. At 13, I had no idea how basketball worked. I just knew that I was supposed to stand around waving my arms, looking tall and trying not to get my glasses broken. In college, I played softball with some friends. We were dead last in the league. Our team, Awesome Grandpa, got spanked by a team called Gators for Christ. It was bad. By senior year, I needed an extra class to have a full load on a light semester, so I took a sports class. I ended up breaking my thumb and sitting on the bench with a book for most of the semester. These days, I’m anything but physically fit. My clothes fit me fine, but I completely fail at any sort of physical

challenges. I can’t touch my toes. I get winded dancing. I try to go jogging and want to vomit by the time I get five houses down the street. I’m not particularly bendy in bed. Still, I remember enjoying the outdoors. I could swim for hours. I ran around playing tag. I played street hockey and I climbed trees. Maybe it’s time to reclaim the small joys I found in physical activities as a child. Not the sports people told me to play – but the crazy shit I did for fun. Fitness doesn’t have to be a quest to be perfect or thinner or better looking. And fitness doesn’t have to be a grueling challenge or endurance test. Instead, fitness can be a long afternoon in bed (not sleeping in bed – sexing in bed). Fitness can be a long day walking around a theme park. Fitness can be trying some yoga on the beach (hopefully where no one is watching). Fitness can mean simply spending an entire day feeling happy. If exercise isn’t your thing, you can still find ways to be physically and emotionally fit. Seek out ways to feel good. Get your blood rushing. Laugh. It’s time to remember what it’s like to feel healthy.
