The return of Christy Turlington Christy Turlington, one of the original supermodel superstars of the 1990’s returns in a splashy new Louis Vuitton campaign and on the cover of July’s Vogue Italia. Miss Turlington, now 41, still looks as ageless and graceful as she did back when she was in her 20’s strutting around in George Michael’s iconic “Freedom” music video. She proves that 40-year-old supermodels do exist. Scream 4 The red-hot horror franchise of the late 90’s and early 2000’s is back with original director Wes Craven and cast members Neve Campbell, Courtney CoxArquette and David Arquette. Added to the mix are new faces Hayden Panettiere, Emma Roberts and Anthony Anderson. Can this sequel survive in today’s market dominated by Twilight and Saw sequels… especially with recent news that original writer Kevil Williamson is reportedly no longer involved? Hating the new Victoria in Eclipse Oh studio execs at Summit Entertainment. If it ain’t broke, then why fix it? So why would you dare replace the wonderful Rachel Lefevre with the underwhelming Bryce Dallas Howard in the third movie in the Twilight saga? Arguably the worst part of Eclipse is the usual winning Howard’s failed portrayal of villainess Victoria. Bad wig, bad acting, bad move Summit.

The Gates on ABC ABC’s original summer TV series is guilty pleasure at its finest. One part Desperate Housewives, a dash of Twilight and Charmed, a sprinkle of True Blood and a red-hot cast including Rhona Mitra and Colton Haynes, The Gates follows the lives of new a family that moves in to a gated community filled with secrets of vampires, werewolves, witches and murder. Tune in to this thriller-drama before it gets axed due to mediocre ratings. The Social Network hype Directed by David Fincher. Check. Written by Aaron Sorkin. Check. Starring Justin Timerlake. Check. Music score by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. Check. Catchy movie poster. Check. Kylie Minogue’s Aphrodite The 11th studio album from the Australian Madonna finds the pop star doing what she does best: making undeniably catchy pop songs that make you wanna dance. Lead single “All The Lovers” is already a hit. Standout album tracks “Cupid Boy” and “Put Your Hands Up” will undoubtedly burn up dance floors across America as well. There is not one filler song on here!

To familiarize our readers with the nation's oil catastrophe, OMG! Magazine prepared this quick guide of what the hell happened.

OMG 10

Who: BP: the 65% share owner of the Macondo Prospect well, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation: 25% share owner and MOEX Offshore 2007, a unit of Mitsui: 10% owner. Transocean, owner of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig. 11 dead, 17 injured. What: An oil rig named the Deepwater Horizon exploded. Well was at a water depth of 5,000 feet. Where: Gulf of Mexico near Mississippi River delta. When: April 20, 2010, the date of the oil rig explosion. Why: Undetermined with an investigation pending. By May 26, 2010,, over 130 oil spillrelated law suits filed.

3 strategies for addressing oil spills 1.) Contain: Government deployed containment booms (floating barriers) to protect the Mississippi River delta and mangrove/marshlands. Rough winds and waves render booms ineffective. 2.) Disperse: Eventually as a result of storms, currents, osmosis and time, oil will become less dense and be consumed by natural processes. Chemicals are used to help the dispersal and dilution process. By May 20, 2010, BP sprayed 600,000 gallons on the surface and 55,000 gallons underwater. 3.) Remove: Tactic address by burning, filtering and collecting. April 28, 2010, the Coast Guard announced plans to burn 42,000 gallons per day but holds off due to poor climate conditions. BP claims 9 millions gallons have been recovered as of May 25, 2010.

Efforts to stop the flow of oil 1.) Send robotic vehicles to close valves on well head. FAIL 2.) Place 280,000lb containment dome over largest leak and suck oil out. FAIL 3.) Insert tube into pipe like a plug and divert oil into collection containers. SEMI-FAIL: managed to collect 920,000 gallons before removal. 4.) “Top Kill method: Pump heavy drilling fluids into blowout preventer to restrict oil then seal with cement. FAIL 5.) Cut the top of the damaged pipe off then cap it. SEMI FAIL: The diamond blade got stuck but still managed to cap it, collecting 420,000 gallons per day. 6.) Drill two relief wells into original well. This will contain the flow of oil and original well can be sealed. IN PROGRESS: Relief wells should begin operating in August at approximately $100 million per well.

Economic Considerations On May 25, 2010, BP gave Florida $25 million to promote tourism with planned $15 million for Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.

BP CEO Tony Hayward wants his life back

Interesting facts May 30, 2010, BP Hired Anne Kolton, previously head of public affairs at the US Department of Energy to head media relations. BP has since spent $50 million on public relations. June 9, 2010, FAA issued no-fly-zone over the affected area of Gulf of Mexico.

coutesy of Associated Press

BP initially tried to downplay incident. CEO Tony Hayward stated that the oil spill was relatively tiny in comparison to a “very big ocean.” He also acknowledged that the oil spill had disrupted the lives of gulf residents and said, “You know, I’d like my life back!”

By June 23, 2010, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) closed commercial and recreational fishing in federal waters for 78,597 sq miles.

BP Chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg also stated that, “I hear comments sometimes that large oil companies are greedy companies who don’t care. But that is not the case in BP. We care about the small people.”

Environmental Consequences

June 18, 2010, Jum Hackett, CEO of Anadarko Petroleum Corp blames BP by stating that BP did not react to warning signs and operated the well unsafely and that he believed BP was grossly negligent. BP countered by stating that despite Anadarko being liable contractually to share costs, they were refusing to accept the responsibility.

Petroleum toxicity Oxygen depletion 400 species of animal at risk Eight national parks threatened 8,332 species live in the affected region As of June 25, 2010, more than 1,539 dead animals counted with more to come

President Obama’s statement: “This oil spill is the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced. Make no mistake, we will fight this spill with everything we’ve got for as long as it takes. We will make BP pay for the damage their company has caused. And we will do whatever’s necessary to help the gulf coast and its people recover from this tragedy.”

On July 5, 2010, BP reported costs of spill response, containment relief well drilling, federal costs, paid claims and relief at $3.12 Billion with continued speculation growing as to how high this number will reach.

International superstar Kylie Minogue rules every country in the world except the U.S. After performing last year to sold out crowds on her first ever North American tour, why hasn’t America crowned Kylie as pop royalty already?

M

adonna. Janet. Kylie. Kylie? Huh? Not many U.S. citizens regard international superstar Kylie Minogue as being in the same pop royalty realm of the Material Girl or Damita Jo. However, her worldwide popularity and record sales of over 70 million should have them believing otherwise. This year, Kylie was voted as the “most powerful celebrity in Britain” over pop royalty Madonna, Paul McCartney and even Posh & Becks. She is a constant presence at the top of international album sales charts and is commonly regarded as the true “princess of pop” (move over Britney). Born Kylie Ann Minogue on May 28, 1968, the pint-size star first earned international recognition for her portrayal of Charlene Robinson in the popular soap opera Neighbors. Her character’s romance storyline culminated in a wedding that attracted a hefty 20 million viewers in the UK. It was the Luke & Laura wedding of international soap operas that catapulted Kylie to worldwide superstar status. Kylie soon made her transition into pop music with the release of singles “I Should Be So Lucky” (a #1 worldwide hit and Top 40 hit in the U.S.) and “The LocoMotion” (her first U.S. Top 5 single). She followed her overnight U.S. success with subsequent releases that were virtually ignored by the U.S. for over a decade. OMG 16

Her relationship with INXS frontman Michael Hutchence, starring roles in films The Delinquents and Street Fighter and a string of hit albums and singles helped Kylie stay relevant in the international spotlight for thirteen years. However, her relevancy in the U.S. was long forgotten. In the mid 1990’s, Kylie began experimenting with a new sound by collaborating with eclectic musician Nick Cave and alternative rock band Manic Street Preachers. While this new sound and style was applauded by critics, her popularity in the foreign markets that she long dominated began to wane. Embracing a disco pop dance sound and a sexy new look, Kylie made a splash with her 2000 comeback album Light Years. The album spawned the successful hit singles “Spinning Around,” “On A Night Like This” and “Kids” a duet with singer Robbie Williams. Minogue’s barely there outfits and provocative live performances made her a sex symbol as Maxim Magazine called her “one of the sexiest women ever to grace our planet.” Despite the huge international success of Light Years, none of the album’s singles nor the album itself were ever released in the U.S. “Can’t Get You Outta My Head” was the lead single off her next album Fever and became her first Top 5 hit in the U.S. since “The Loco-Motion” in 1987. Fever debuted at number 3 on the U.S. Billboard Album charts and became her best-selling album ever; surpassing sales of even Michael Jackson’s Thriller in some foreign markets.

Kylie followed up the U.S. success of Fever with poorly charting singles and albums in the U.S. In one interview, she called the U.S. market “notoriously difficult… [Y] ou have so many denominations with radio. To know where I fit within that market is sometimes difficult.” Despite lackluster sales in the U.S., she remains a staple on the U.S. dance charts and in the gay market. She is also a staple on blogger Perez Hilton’s website, whether he’s covering her recent battle with breast cancer or her romantic trysts with actor Olivier Martinez or model Andres Velencoso. Kylie’s 2009 For You, For Me Tour, her first concert tour ever in North America, was a hit with audiences and critics, selling out venues in Las Vegas, Chicago and New York. Her 11th studio album, Aphrodite was released in the U.S. on July 6, 2010 while lead single “All The Lovers” is currently burning up the U.S. dance charts. Only time will tell if Kylie Minogue’s success overseas will ever wash up on U.S. shores. KYLIE DISCOGRAPHY Here’s a listing of the five Kylie albums since her 2000 comeback to have in your iTunes Library. Light Years (2000) Light Years did for Kylie what The Emancipation of Mimi did for Mariah: remind audiences that real pop divas are here to stay despite being previously written off by the public and critics. Lead single “Spinning Round” is an infectious pop dance ditty that literally spun Kylie back on the pop culture radar map. Standout tracks: “Spinning Around,”“On a Night Like This” & “Your Disco Needs You” Fever (2001) Kylie had her biggest selling album in the U.S. when Fever was released in the spring of 2001. Sparked by the megahit lead single “Can’t Get You Outta My Head” which became her first U.S. Top 10 hit in more than a decade, Fever struck many new fans that were discovering Kylie for the first time. Standout tracks: “Love at First Sight,” “Can’t Get You Outta My Head,” “Fever” & “Burning Up”

Body Language (2003) Armed with a new look, Kylie hit a minor speed bump with the underwhelming sales and reviews of her 9th studio album Body Language. While many complained of the second half of the album being nothing more than filler and B-sides, the first half is undeniable Kylie gold. Standout tracks: “Slow,” “Sweet Music, “Secret (Take You Home)” & “Red Blooded Woman” Ultimate Kylie (2004) Kylie fans rejoiced upon the release of this 2-disc set that featured everything from 80’s classics “The Loco-motion” and “I Could Be So Lucky” to her darker material from the Impossible Princess era. Miz Minogue even enlisted the Scissor Sisters to help craft the magical lead single “I Believe in You.” Standout tracks: “I Believe In You,” “Put Yourself In My Place,” “Where The Wild Roses Grow (with Nick Cave)” & “The Loco-Motion” X (2007) X marked the spot as what can only be described as Kylie’s strongest album since her 2000 comeback. Working with new producers (Calvin Harris, Bloodshy & Avant), Kylie further dived into the electronic realm despite the burlesque pop rock sound of lead single “2 Hearts.” Standout tracks: “All I See,” “Like A Drug,” 2 Hearts” & “Speakerphone” Be sure to also check out Boombox: The Remix Album (2009), Impossible Princess (1998), Kylie Minogue (1994), Let's Get To It (1991), Rhythm of Love (1990), Enjoy Yourself (1989) and Kylie (1988). OMG! MAGAZINE’S EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

with Billy Jolie, author of

The Lust Garden

OMG! Magazine’s very own Billy Jolie is set to release his debut novel, The Lust Garden later this month. I recently sat down with the newly published author for a little Q&A about his most recent accomplishment. OKESENE TILO FOR OMG!: First off, a huge congratulations to you for completing your very first novel. I clearly remember you first telling me about working on it nearly 4 years ago, so tell OMG! Magazine readers a little about your book. BILLY JOLIE: Thanks a lot Okie! At its heart, the book is a dramatic journey through the minds of two very extreme characters. We have Gianna Salvani, the ultimate Hollywood “It” girl, strutting her way through fame and dealing with its drawbacks. Her quest for love, acceptance, domination… and in the background of all this glitz, we get to experience the darkness of a serial killer who is obsessed with Gianna and the idea of physical metamorphosis. You’ll be dying to figure out his secret. OMG!: How did you come up with the storyline? JOLIE: The core twist was in my head for years. The hard part was building a fantasy world around it where these characters could exist to allow the events to unfold. I’m obsessed with the idea of celebrity.

Written by Okesene Tilo

Hollywood became the ideal environment. In a way, I lived vicariously through my characters. The easiest way to chase fame is to fake it till you make it. OMG!: Why do you think readers of OMG! would want to read your book? JOLIE: It’s a wild ride. It’s scandalous. It’s the perfect summer read for the beach. My characters and their sexuality are very fluid. In fact, Blair, one of the main characters is gay. He’s the guy you’d want to have a “Bad Romance” with. OMG!: I love the title. How did you come up with it? JOLIE: Honestly, by mistake. I played around with a few titles in the beginning, but ultimately they didn’t work for the material. I was looking through some old photographs of a trip I took to Berlin and came across a shot I’d taken of a park sign called Lustgarten. I guess it was meant to be. OMG!: When did you start writing? JOLIE: Ever since I can remember. It started with poems and then spiraled from there. Writing was always an escape for me, especially when I was young, gay and growing up in small town America. I actually have full-length novels buried in my closet from high school. I’d probably be scared to revisit them.

OMG 25

JOLIE: Deciding the fate of a character you’ve grown to love is always difficult. Knowing you can’t change it is even harder. Technical aspects are tricky as well. One of the characters, Zak, is British. It was challenging making his dialogue believable. Luckily, I have a wonderful friend who lives in London that I was able to draw from. OMG!: Tell us about your favorite part of the book. JOLIE: Well… I don’t want to give too much away, but there’s an explosive interaction involving Gianna and her killer toward the end of the story. I spent the whole novel working toward this reunion of sorts, and having them together in the same room, was so artistically rewarding for me. It’s my best work. OMG!: There’s always some truth in fiction. Does any part of the story reflect your own past? JOLIE: Definitely. There are pieces of me in every character. I think the people closest to me will be surprised at just how much of me is laced within the story. I lost my father early in my childhood. I gave Gianna the same struggle. And Blair’s gay. I use everything around me for inspiration. OMG!: If your book was made into a movie, who would play the lead? JOLIE: I debate this constantly. Gianna is an extreme character with alternating highs and lows. She’s a bit bipolar. And the actress would have to possess vocal talent. I’m going to say Scarlett Johansson. OMG!: Who are some of your favorite authors? JOLIE: There are too many. I grew up reading trashy novels by Jackie Collins. I hate to admit it, but she taught me a lot about sex. Bret Easton Ellis is a favorite. Anne Rice. And I’ve recently discovered Martin Millar, a British writer. I wish I had half his talent. He’s brilliantly hilarious. OMG!: Which individual has had the single greatest influence on your life? JOLIE: My grandmother. She’s an amazing woman and the book is dedicated to her. After I came out to her, to which she was completely accepting of, I really started to live freely. OMG!: Any advice for inspiring writers?

OMG 26

JOLIE: Don’t talk about wanting to write… Sit down and actually do it. Love it for the creative freedom. Don’t do it for the money. And never give up, even if you’re staring at a pile of rejection letters. It’s all part of the process. It happened to me. I had an agent tell me the material was too dark and the alternating storylines would never work in commercial publishing. I need to frame that letter. OMG!: So what’s next for Mr. Jolie? JOLIE: The future appears to be unwritten. That’s what’s so great about the life of a writer. I have an outline for a sequel waiting for me to develop, but I think I want to try something different. I’d like to get out of my comfort zone a bit and see what happens. The Lust Garden is officially released on July 24, 2010. It will be available on Amazon.com and at major book retailers Barnes & Noble, Borders and Books-a-Million. OMG! Magazine presents this exclusive excerpt from OMG! Magazine writer and newly published author Billy Jolie’s debut novel, The Lust Garden, available for purchase on July 24, 2010 on Amazon. com and at major book retailers Barnes & Noble, Borders and Books-a-Million. Here is an excerpt from Chapter 16 of The Lust Garden by Billy Jolie. Blair Woodward loved dropping obscene amounts of cash on Melrose Avenue. The shops were hip, and he didn’t have to deal with the clusterfuck of paparazzi that stalked Robertson Boulevard. The day was still young, and he was quickly approaching $10K in damages. These were the perks of being Gianna Salvani’s gay husband. He hadn’t spoken to Gianna in three days other than the occasional text message. She was with Vance. Apparently, they needed their alone time. Blair didn’t care. He needed a break anyway, but he did miss her. Using Gianna’s limitless credit card was a little like having her there with him, only less bitching and more spending. Holding a handful of designer shopping bags, Blair was working his way to another retail outlet when he heard someone call his name from behind. “Blair! Oh my God… Do my eyes deceive me?”

OMG!: What was the hardest part to write in the book?

He turned around to respond to the voice and quickly wished he hadn’t been spotted. Blair smiled politely. This was going to be awkward. “Hey… um… Tony?” Blair said, trying to recall the boy’s name in front of him. The twinky boy approached Blair and immediately bear-hugged him. “How have you been?” he asked, excitedly. Blair nodded in return, still forcing his smile. “Oh… pretty good. You?” “So fab! You have no idea. I’ve been on three auditions this week alone, and my new agent thinks I totally landed this part on one of the daytime soaps. We all have to start somewhere, right?” “Good luck with that,” Blair replied, moving to walk away from him. The boy followed like a lapdog. Tony. Last name unknown. Nineteen and certainly one of Blair’s biggest sexual regrets. They’d hooked up at a bathhouse in West Hollywood a year ago. Blair made the mistake of inviting him home after where they continued to bang like rabbits in heat. That’s what you did with young tricks. But Tony was a little different. Beautiful and blonde with blue eyes for days. He was the Abercrombie type with a cut surfer’s body. Totally L.A., another model-actor wannabe that seemed to populate all of gay WeHo. After their night of carefree sex, he’d never stopped calling. “So, you never call me back. Like ever,” he said, annunciating his words. “What’s up with that, man?” Blair stopped mid-walk and pulled his silver aviators down. “Tony… I’ve been in New York all summer. I’m a very busy individual.” “But you’re here now, and you still haven’t called.” Blair sighed with annoyance. “Look, I have to get going.” He was trying hard to avoid confrontation knowing they were in the middle of Melrose Avenue in front of God and everyone. Even though Blair wasn’t famous, the paps knew his association to Gianna. They’d still photograph him to death and tip off the bloggers if anything bizarre went down. “Wait! Please… Don’t leave. I just wanna talk to you. I like you. Wait… Ugh! How embarrassing!” Blair shook his head. He was the one embarrassed. This was headed to nowhereville fast. He remembered trying to kick this trick out of his apartment the morning after they’d had sex. He had to practically drag the kid out kicking and screaming with his boxers in his hands. And that’s when Tony had spotted the pictures in his living room. Daylight was the true revealer. The pictures were of Gianna and Blair and not the kind you’d find in the tabloid rags.

Real pictures. Gianna was every queer boy’s dream fag-hag. Tony was so impressed and immediately begged to meet her. Blair wasn’t amused at all. He’d been through this before. Many people had used him in the past to get to Gianna. “Tony,” Blair said, softly, trying to be kind. “I told you before. I think you’re a really sweet guy, but I’m not into you that way. I’m just being honest with you.” “What’s wrong with me? I mean… I’m cute. You said so yourself.” “You don’t know when to quit do you?” “Not when it’s something I want,” he replied, trying to entice Blair. “You’re wasting your time.” “Maybe. Maybe not.” Blair smirked and started to walk again. He could see his car parked on the street ahead of him. Freedom was but a few paces away. Tony was still following. “It was nice seeing you again and it’s been super fun catching up, but I have an appointment I’m late for. You understand, right?” “Wow! Is that your car?” Tony said, pointing to the black Porsche 911 parked in front of them. It was a gift from Gianna. She wanted them to have matching cars, only different colors. “Yup.” “Nice! I’m so jealous.” Blair unlocked the driver-side door and eased into the plush leather seat. He slowly began to close the door when Tony put his hand in the way. “I’ve never been in one before. Can I sit inside? Just for a minute!” “I don’t think that’s a good idea right now. I told you I’m running late.” “No, you’re not – you’re just saying that. C’mon, just let me.” “No!” Blair said as firmly as he could manage. “Pretty please,” Tony countered, resting his hand on Blair’s shoulder. He winked and smiled a set of pearly whites. “I promise I’ll leave you alone after. You owe me.” Blair rolled his eyes. “Fine! Two seconds.” He reached over and unlocked the passenger-side door. “Hurry up. Get in before I change my mind.” Tony pranced around to the opposite side and got in next to Blair. The windows were tinted black, shielding them from the California sun. Tony sighed as the seat hugged his body in return. He ran his fingers along the leather interior. Blair felt a sudden sense of déjà vu. It was like looking back in time to the first night he’d met Gianna and what that had felt like for him. He wasn’t so far ahead of Tony in the grand scheme of it all.

OMG 27

“This is fierce!” “It’s just a car,” Blair replied. “Did she give it to you?” “Who?” Blair asked. “Boy, don’t act stupid with me. You know who… Gianna!” “Maybe,” Blair said, giving back some well-deserved attitude. He’d been very nice up until now. “Yeah… She sure did, didn’t she? It’s just like the one she totes around in.” “And your point being?” “Nothing, just stating the obvious.” Tony moved his hand to Blair’s upper thigh and started to rub him. Blair put his sunglasses back on in response and started the engine. His hand gripped the stick shift between them. It was time to go before this went somewhere it shouldn’t. “I need to go now,” Blair said, staring straight ahead and ignoring what Tony was doing to him. Tony moved closer with his hand sliding inward until he was gently massaging Blair’s groin. Immediately, Blair was turned on. Tony continued and undid his zipper. His hand gripped tighter and Blair fought the desire to let him proceed further. “What are you doing?” Tony smiled, executing his little mission impossible. “Whatever you want me to,” he whispered. “It’s been a while for you, hasn’t it?” “You can’t do this here!” “Yes… I can.” “Someone is going to see us!” “So what,” he said. Tony descended to Blair’s lap. Blair had his reservations, but he wasn’t about to decline an impromptu afternoon blowjob. So, he went with it and gave in. Tony was amazing in bed. He was easily one of Blair’s best West Coast conquests. Sadly, it could never be anything more than just sex. He wasn’t his type. Blair needed someone established. Someone on the same level. Or at least someone with a real job. Tony’s mouth was hot on his skin and Blair moaned with pleasure. He ran his hand through Tony’s shaggy, soft blonde hair, pushing his head down with more pressure as they continued. Blair was close. He kept his eye on the street. People were passing by, but were oblivious to what was literally going down. Then again, it wouldn’t be the first time a fag had given a daytime blowjob on Melrose Avenue. It was like seeing a stripper in Las Vegas, completely expected. “Tony… Ah,” Blair moaned. “You’re gonna make me-”

OMG 28

He didn’t stop or pull away. Blair grabbed his head as he released. At least there wouldn’t be a mess to clean up after. When it was over, Tony lifted up and wiped his mouth. He was proud. Blair immediately zipped his fly. “Should we go back to your place and really have some fun?” Tony asked. Blair smiled and said, “Not today… Maybe another time.” “Right. That’s fine. That’s cool,” Tony said, flipping the overhead mirror in front of him to check his appearance. “I’ve got stuff to do anyway. I’m busy too, you know.” “You have to get out now,” Blair said, revving the engine. “When do I get to meet her?” “Who?” “Gianna! Geez, Mary.” “Of course,” Blair said, annoyed. He wasn’t surprised. Tony’s little gift of oral action had been all about her. It was always about Gianna with him, with all of them. “I don’t know. She’s busy. She can’t take time out of her schedule to meet every fag that’s sucking my dick.” “You promised me, asshole!” Blair saw the change immediately. From good boy to bad. Crazy. The bitch switch had been flipped. There was something simmering below this kid’s surface that didn’t need stirring. Not by Blair anyway. “I’ll see what I can do,” he lied, protecting himself. “I wanna meet her now! I have to. You don’t understand. It’s destiny. She’s like meant to be my B.F.F. She could get me work in some of her films, right?” “She can certainly try.” “Yay! Awesome. Hey… Do you think you could loan me some money. I’m a little short right now.” “What?” “It’s the least you could do for what I just did.” He winked. Blair choked on laughter. “I hope you’re joking.” “I’m not really working right now. And I’m staying with this guy over in Brentwood. He’s kinda older, you know? I could use the cash.” “Try getting a job!” “I’m not leaving till I get paid!” Tony folded his arms. “Whatever!” Blair wasn’t in the mood to play. He reached into his back pocket and pulled out his wallet. He opened the billfold exposing a thick line of hundred dollar bills. He pulled one out and tossed it at Tony. “There… Now find your way back to Santa Monica Boulevard and get the fuck out of my car!” The Lust Garden is officially released on July 24, 2010. It will be available on Amazon.com and at major book retailers Barnes & Noble, Borders and Books-a-Million.

Having come to terms with my sexuality much later in life, I always held back on the things I truly wanted to wear. I so wanted to be a little party monster growing up: a quasi-Manson yet not-so-sadistic elaborate circus creature. Only there was no outlet for me to achieve such a look in my New Port Richey, Florida catholic home. Things have since changed.

One of the most important things to my own style (or to anyone’s style for that matter) is balance. If I want to wear an extremely feminine accessory, I pair it with a masculine shirt. If I want to wear elaborate Goth eyeliner, I steer clear of wearing anything else that looks like it came from Hot Topic. Stone Bracelet: Diesel Dotted Bracelet: Topman Pointed Ring:- Topman Brass Knuckles: BBlessing

And black, black galore. You're either black or brown. Edgy or classic. Studded or vintage. I am black, edgy and studded. Searching through bins at Goodwill just does not do it for me.

So, black is my staple. My back-drop, if you will. Some color block on me (whether it be pants, shirt or jacket) is always a shiny, faded or solid wash black.

My staple, signature piece in my weekend attire is eye shadow (which I use in place of eyeliner). Heavy, thick, smeared under the eyes. I go with either a deep black (MD from Ricky's is best) or a red. I've also found the loose powder eye shadow applies best and lasts the longest. Make Up: ME (Ricky's)

Last weekend I paired a vintage pin-up Playboy shirt with spray-on black skinny jeans, eyeliner, brass knuckles and black riding boots. It is pairing these kinds of opposites (a gay man wearing a Playboy shirt, eye liner and brass knuckles) which defines my personal style – which is all about balance. Another thing I try to incorporate in my outfits is army accessories - aviators, combat boots and stars. I have multiple tattoos which have a 'military edge' to them.

Today and Tomorrow Shoes: Diesel Combat Boots: Diesel

Since I have a very corporate 9-5 job, I try to play around with clothes as much as possible while maintaining professionalism. I generally wear a tight Ben Sherman shirt (making sure my tattoos show) with skinny jeans, glasses and combat boots (this is my day-to-day). For important meetings or client interactions, I make sure to wear a sweater over my arms to cover the tattoos, Diesel dress shoes and skinny jean dress pants. I like to blur the corporate lines as much as possible (again with the balance: dress shirt and tattoos blazing/combat boots and eye glasses).

At bars, I can wear a tie, no eyeliner, skinny jeans and a patterned shirt and get hit on left and right… but that's not what I feel comfortable in doing (hello boring). That's not who I am. It is important to wear what makes you feel comfortable, what makes you you. Like Marilyn Monroe once said, “Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.” Hat: Topman

Australian Idol alumni and genderbending sensation Courtney Act has just released her new single, “Welcome to Disgraceland.”

Most recently, Courtney made international headlines when she performed a private birthday performance for Lady Gaga. “After the performance, we chatted and walked together in a garden. At one point, we reached some stone steps that looked dangerous,” she remembers. “Gaga suggested we take off our heels since they were both 6 inches high. Mine, however, were not Armani Privé and Swarovski encrusted.”

C

ourtney Act made a named for herself in 2003, when after trying out and failing to get on Australian Idol as Shane Jenek, she returned for the next day’s audition as Courtney Act. Courtney’s explosive, energetic performing style and joyous personality resonated with audiences. With performances of songs like “You Don’t Own Me,” “W.O.M.A.N.” and “You Shook Me All Night Long”, the country was mesmerized and Australia had a new, slightly less conventional sweetheart. Act’s new single, “Welcome to Disgraceland” was inspired by her live show at Disgraceland, a popular Australia nightclub renowned for its elaborate costumes, colorful dancers and over-the-top fabulousness. Some of the biggest names in the world have attended Disgraceland including George Michael and the Pussycat Dolls. “No matter where I am when I sing the song’s chorus, the audience and I are magically transported to Disgraceland,” she says. “It’s euphoric to see everyone in the arena jumping, dancing, laughing and celebrating the debauchery!” OMG 34

Even so, Act says she was struck by how normal Lady Gaga was. “Our similarities were greater than our differences,” she says. Act hopes audiences gleam the same realization from her show. In addition to being the first drag contestant on Idol, Courtney Act was the franchises’ first “out” contestant. No other contestant on any Idol show throughout the world has ever been out during production. Still, Courtney doesn’t credit that for her success. “I was judged on my entertainment value and talent, two essential qualities for any pop artist,” she says. “I know the fact that I was in drag added to the entertainment value, but I think the whole package is what got me through.” Idol has led to many new opportunities for the drag star, including a make-up contract as one of the TV faces of Sheer Cover Make-up, a role in the Australian company of the musical RENT, and numerous TV show appearances including Australia’s Next Top Model. In 2007, she was selected by FHM Magazine readers as one of FHM’s Top 100 Sexiest Women in the World. For more information, visit www.courtneyact.com.

I

t’s 2010. Women have been allowed out of the kitchen. Blacks are allowed to sit in the front of the bus. I’m gay and I’ve even kissed a man in public! But when will a person have the freedom to be sexually active and not be judged by most people for it?

My straight friends talk shit about people who have sex a lot. My gay friends speak poorly about people who have sex a lot. They brand those people as whores. The same guy who has his cock hanging out on Manhunt persecuted someone for having a threesome. I overheard it. Double standard much? In many ways we are a sexually-free culture. It sometimes seems that more people cheat than stay loyal. It also seems that more marriages end in divorce than endure. But as our bodies wiggle away under the sheets, have we matured enough as a culture to allow ourselves the same mental freedom? When are we going to be able to have safe sex freely without feeling guilty about it? I once worked with an adorable Christian girl. During a lunch break, she revealed that she intended to keep her vagina away from a penis until the night of her wedding. Around the table there was unanimous praise for how great and upstanding this was — until I spoke up. I didn’t feel it was good or bad that she was a virgin. It was a personal choice that worked for her but maybe not for someone else. Most of these coworkers were loose, Godless partiers. And even these rowdy atheists revealed themselves to be hanging on to deep-seeded Puritan ethics. In my eyes, the virgin’s sexual organs are no better or worse than that of a well adjusted sex worker.

OMG 36

I will never call someone a slut. I don’t believe in that word. The concept of slut is outdated. I don’t feel that the number of sexual partners a person has is any indication of the value of their character. A person who has been with six thousand people is just as cool in my book as someone who has been with three. We will never enjoy our 2010 bodies unless we put our 1950’s mindset to rest. I chuckled last week as my friend snuck to the bathhouse at 3 am only to call someone a “dirty whore” hours later at brunch. As he spoke, the scent of stranger’s semen still lingered on his breath. Cue Alanis Morissette track. Jeremy Gloff is an independent musician, singer, songwriter, writer and columnist. He has self-released over a dozen albums since 1993. Weight Loss and

Massage

Helping you

meet your goals

R

esearch now confirms that massage can be a powerful and effective weight-loss tool, something Massage Therapists have always known. This belief is validated by the fact that massage can improve your body’s resilience, aiding in muscle nutrition and flexibility, as well as supporting your mental and emotional well-being. The relationship between massage and weight-loss is the result of many subtle improvements working together, but in the end, massage can help take your weight-loss plan to a whole new level. Massage therapists work to improve your flexibility, range of motion and expediting the break down of scar tissue. These advantages help make you less likely to hurt yourself during exercise, in turn, making your workouts more productive and less painful. But the benefits of massage and weight-loss do not end here. Massage directly impacts both your Nervous and Circulatory systems. The benefit to your circulatory system is an increase in blood flow to the body tissue, this increased amount of oxygen and nutrients in your muscles will cause the tissue to grow faster. Swedish massage’s effect on the nervous system helps to relax you and activate your parasympathetic division. In this restorative state the body is where it needs to be in order to heal itself. All together, the soothing cycle of massage eases your body into a much needed rest and recovery phase after strenuous exercise.

Make it work for you…

Losing weight isn’t easy. But with a little bit of effort, it’s simple to succeed. Incorporate a good workout plan, a strong diet and massage into your healthy lifestyle. It’s always a good idea to consult with a few professionals before embarking on such a plan. Ask questions like, “How will this exercise plan affect your body? What are the problem areas of your body where you gain weight first? How is your digestive health? Is your lifestyle stressful or relaxed?” These simple questions can help your healthcare OMG 42

providers customize a plan that will be most effective for you; and be sure to include your massage therapist in this consultation so that they can be a pivotal part of this plan. Ideally, massage on a healthy person should be no more than 90 minutes, 60 minutes is the most common session. While weekly massages are ideal, in these trying economic times that may not be affordable. You can reap many benefits from monthly visits as well. Check with your MT, they may run promos or specials for last minute appointments, as well as seasonal discounts. A great massage therapist will work with your schedule as well as your finances. Do what works best for you!

Don’t be shy… While it’s natural for anyone to feel a little self-conscious at first about undressing for massage, overweight clients often have major anxieties about disrobing. If you have put off massage because you are embarrassed about your body shape or size, take heart, most MTs are sensitive to your concerns and don’t want you to feel anything but relaxed. A great MT is used to seeing bodies in all shapes, sizes and conditions. A well-trained MT has a clinical perspective, making them able to accept and treat just like any other health care provider. Finally, if you still have an issue, I recommend wearing undergarments during your massage – to reassure your peace of mind.

The power of Touch… When starting a new health plan or diet, it’s easy to overlook your emotional health, but emotional health can be a prime factor in determining your plan’s success. Massage plays a strong supportive role in your

mental and emotional health – some would say your emotional health can be a critical component in your plan. A good way to look at massage in your weight-loss plan is that massage is a calorie-free reward: it’s a way to treat yourself without guilt! Massage is a powerful way to love, respect and nurture yourself; it makes you feel safe, comfortable and at peace with yourself. This in turn will connect you to a sense of self-worth and healthy living. As an MT, I have learned that all bodies are unique and have unique needs, everyone deserves to be nurtured. Regular massage is all about reconnecting with your body and get back into yourself. Being aware of your body’s needs will motivate you to meet them. It’s all a part of the greater picture of your health and fitness. As a massage therapist, I want to help you bridge the gap between your mind and body that will last you a lifetime. Now is the time you realize that massage is not a guilty pleasure but a vital part your preventative health regime. You deserve a massage today! Another way to connect your mind and body is through Massage Therapy! Give yourself the gift of happiness today with a massage at TAMPAPROMASSAGE. There are a lot of massage therapists out there, give yourself the massage you pay for. At TAMPAPROMASSAGE, I offer a quality affordable massage on your terms. L

ets just acknowledge the heavily made up, scrappy hair extension wearing, pencil thin 16 year-old elephant in the room. Taylor Momsen of the band The Pretty Reckless is barely old enough to drive. In the overly saturated market of teenagers that want to be singers and actresses that want to drop an album, this is an extreme case where talent outshines all else and something so spectacularly dark that it is impossible to ignore is created. The Pretty Reckless EP, headlined by Taylor Momsen of Gossip Girl fame has all the throaty, raw energy of a teenage garage band coupled with a lead singer whose voice is so harsh, strong and dynamic that it can not only carry but accentuate and compete with the electric guitars ripping the background music to beautiful shreds. You forget that she is only 16 and immediately get lost in the fact that she has more talent and range than most adults. One of the biggest criticisms of the band is that the lead singer is "pretending” to be angry and angsty; that she seems like a little girl trying too hard to imitate her predecessors who have actually lived long enough to be justifiably pissed. Personally, I can’t remember a time in my life when I was more emotional, angry and angstridden than my teenage years. Couple this with living your life under the public scrutiny of Gossip Girl fame, and these songs offer us a peek into Momsen's pain. Like most other teenagers, she is saying "fuck the world" but she is artistically screaming it in a loud and clear way that cannot be denied. Alanis Morisette, Courtney Love, Shirley Manson, Meredith Brooks and Fiona Apple have all paved a way for this type of music. Every generation has its "bitch" whose five minutes run out when she makes enough money to forget that she is angry. These five minutes have provided us with some of our most memorable rock hits such as "Bitch" by Meredith Brooks, "#1 Crush" by Shirley Manson of Garbage and the entire Jagged Little Pill album by Alanis Morissette. So while it may be wrong to call a 16 year-old a "bitch,” I think it’s a moniker Taylor Momsen wouldn’t mind being referred to as. In fact, I think that’s the entire point. “My Medicine” “There's a tiger in the room and a baby in the closet… Pour another drink mom… I don't even want it” OMG 48

The Pretty Reckless EP is available on iTunes.

Amidst lyrics that don’t really make much sense, we find a song that starts off slowly with Momsen singing the lyrics very softly which quickly morphs into an angry but welcome diatribe with such a strong "rock and roll" vibe. We can almost picture Momsen walking into a bar with this song playing on the jukebox, downing a drink, then leaving on a motorcycle while the bar explodes in the background. This song makes you forget that she isn’t even old enough to drink. “Make Me Wanna Die” “Take me I'm alive… Never was a girl with a wicked mind… But everything looks better when sun goes down” “Make Me Wanna Die” switches back and forth between periods where the song slows down and her voice takes on a vulnerability that we all remember from the pain of falling in puppy love, to the anger we all felt after that first love ended. It is both quiet and loud at the same time. “Goin Down” “Hey there, Father… I don't wanna bother you… But I've got a sin to confess… I'm just 16 if you know what I mean… Do you mind if I take off my dress?” Yes Taylor, we do mind if you take off your dress. “Goin Down” is arguably the weakest of the three songs on The Pretty Reckless EP. It is much more upbeat and quick, lacking the quiet if not sporadic vulnerability of the other two songs. “Goin Down” is the type of song you play while you are in the car driving down the interstate. It is empowering, loud and gets your blood pumping. While it lacks the haunting undertone of the other songs, it offers a larger range for the band in general.

Hey yawl, Hope your Independence Day weekend went off with a “bang.” The City Beautiful brought out its usual barrage of fireworks despite the awful rainy rainy rainy weather. Hurricane Alex produced a severe storm system that kept dumping loads of rain on our festive plans. However, Alex showed some mercy and allowed the majority of scheduled events to proceed. On July 3, The Parliament House of Orlando, Florida hosted the incredible vocal impressionist, Mr. Jimmy James along with Sahara Davenport of season 2 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. If you’ve never had the opportunity of seeing Jimmy James perform, you must check him out on YouTube. What an amazing vocal impressionist with an ability to vocally impersonate Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, Eartha Kitt and Marilyn Monroe just to name a few. It’s honestly the most jaw dropping performance I’ve witnessed in years. I’m so looking forward to Jimmy’s return to the Parliament House where he’ll present his “One Woman Show:” performing duets with your favorite Divas utilizing video. Fierce! I’ll most definitely keep you posted on this event. Listen up! Female Impersonators who weigh 200 pounds or more, have I got the contest for you. MISS GAY ORLANDO at LARGE, Monday August 23, 2010 at 9PM at The Parliament House Resort! If your weight is disproportionate to your height, yes you qualify to be a contestant. Should you have a question about their weight qualifications, please contact me at 407-2528129 or hit me up on Facebook.com (Darcel Stevens). On hand that evening will be Josephine Andrews (the reigning Miss Gay Orlando), Lakisha Lucky (former Miss Parliament House) and Samantha Daniels (Miss Closet Ball 2010). The at large contestants will be judged in 3 categories; Presentation, “Back the Black” Talent and Evening Gown. If you’ve never seen an at large pageant, put aside those preconceived ideas about fat and fabulous entertainers and prepare yourself for something uniquely special. Nothing against those skinny bitches but I personally feel the big girls work twice as hard and are far more entertaining. So mark your calendars: Monday August 23 and prepare yourself of what’s sure to be an excitingly huge evening of competition and electrifying entertainment. Congratulations to David Frecklz Hunter, recent winner of Mr. Noche Latina 2010. Frecklz is a former Mr. Continental, superb entertainer, dancer, gymnast and choreographer.

You can see Frecklz, who’s one of the renowned Footlight Players, at the world famous Parliament House on Friday and Saturday. Also check him out on Facebook (David Frecklz Hunter) where you’ll see pictures from the Mr. Noche Latina 2010 contest or on YouTube. Well done kid!! On a personal note, I want to thank Don, Susan, Dana, Sassy, Armani and Nick for showing such gracious hospitality to my family. Many of you may have been aware that my family reunion was recently held in Orlando where I was honored to have about 30 of my immediate family attend the 10pm show at the Parliament House. I had never been as nervous in all my days as a professional female impersonator, partly because the majority of my loved ones had never seen Darcel Stevens or ever been in a gay bar. On top of that, the matriarch of my family, Aunt Johnnie, decided that she wanted to come along that day too. So there I was, a ball of nerves, literally driving my cast mad backstage! The Footlight Players endured my anxieties and were so patient and encouraging with me which somewhat calmed my nerves down. After my monologue and performance, I got myself together and joined my family in the Footlight Theatre only to find Don and Susan showing an abundance of love and hospitality. Sassy and Armani joined us in what seemed like forever as we took countless pictures. The family has such a great time that they called others to the Parliament House, joining the many that stayed for the midnight show. Good times were had by all, thanks in part to incredible Parliament House Staff, Facebook friends and especially Nick, Sassy, Don, Susan and Armani. To be validated by your family is the most awesome feeling! I’m so blessed! Finally, it’s coming and coming fast! What? I dare not say it but need to... oh what the hell! On Wednesday, September 8, 2010, I will be turning 50 years old. I’m not comfortable turning 50, but what can one do? The Parliament House pans to host a huge party for me in the Footlight Theater at 9pm. JESUS I’m turning 50… Arggghhh! 50 yawl, 50! OMG! Magazine, Ms Darcel wants to be on the cover in September. 50 years old???? Nooooooo!!! Bye for now, going to register at AARP.

very New York transplant has a story. It is never as easy as “I moved straight into my new apartment in Manhattan with central heat & air, a washer/dryer combo in unit and a great view!” The typical stories sound more like “I was homeless for a while, lived in a studio apartment with a crackhead drag queen and cleaned kitchens in dirty Chinatown restaurants.” It’s those types of horror stories that make moving to New York even more exciting. I remember the day I saw my first apartment in Bushwick, Brooklyn. People refer to that area as the “new Williamsburg” but to me it seemed more like the “Old Puerto Rico.” I made a vow that I would take whatever struggles came my way and move forward. After flying up to NY, I met Mahogany (a 7ft tall African American transsexual who enjoys watching the Jesus channel while wearing colorful hats and who also moonlights as an aerobics instructor on YouTube) who she showed me my new apartment in a building that had recently been in a fire. It was a two bedroom railroad apartment where all the rooms were in a row. My bedroom and the sole bathroom were at opposite ends of the apartment. Late night urination required me to walk through my roommates’ room or exit out into the building hall and re-enter. The building manager was a lovely Hasidic Jewish man complete with sideburn curls who I found to be a unique pairing with his transsexual employee.

The previous tenant (a Dominican stripper) still lived there, so I spent two nights living with her. When she left, I received the generous housewarming gift of body wax in all the drains. My roommate from Florida eventually moved up here and we spent an amazing winter together. Heat and hot water were rare. When it got really cold, we turned the oven on before we showered so the kitchen would at least be warm. At nighttime, we put a space heater in the doorway between our rooms and used extra blankets. My roommate was robbed twice by the crackhead drug-dealer upstairs. Once, he climbed through a window we left open. The next time, he just came through the front door. We tried to train the rats and roaches to defend the place but sadly, even they didn’t like the place. Two days after I received my first raise at work, I had found another apartment in Manhattan with central heat & air, a washer/dryer combo in unit and a Jacuzzi tub. It is there where I now reside. I think about my first apartment in Bushwick, Brooklyn sometimes though and I actually miss it. It resonates with me as a time when I had absolutely no idea what track my life was on and was merely surviving in conditions which I now laugh at. I was cold, lonely, piss-poor and yet a completely legitimate example of “making it” in New York. Every day, I am amazed at how many things have changed and grateful for how many things that did not. I have lived in New York City for two years but will always be a Florida boy at heart. Each issue, my column will document the craziness I have encountered in my journey from the bottom of the U.S. to the top. Hot summer streets and the pavements are burning I sit around. Trying to smile but the air is so heavy and dry Strange voices are sayin' What did they say? Things I can't understand It's too close for comfort this heat has got right out of hand It's a cruel ... cruel ... cruel summer…

Bananarama sang it first. Ace of Base covered it in the late 90’s. Oh yeah, “It’s A Cruel Summer” of 2010! The weather is blistering, petroleum is suffocating, jobs are scarce and acts of senselessness abound. We need a breath of fresh air, positivity and soul-stirring substance. In dark times, I’ve always turned aurally inward for inspiration and comfort. Forget the bullshit Top 40, auto-tuned, mass-produced, self-absorbed fare. What’s in between the beats and melody can become more important; the sensation more profound. Angelic trance vocals can initiate the transcendental. Search out these current gems to reboot your psyche.

“Restlessness” by Bastien Laval featuring Layla Seconds turn to minutes and the minutes turn to hours and the hours turn to days and the world goes round... Check out this beautiful yet haunting track from French producer Bastien Laval. Its chaos melded with a bit of lyrical magic. Melancholy insomnia gives way to the acceptance that the act of “yearning” keeps us spinning through the cosmos. Meaningful and possibly life changing… Once you touch the sky, there is no coming down.

“Eternity” by Guru Josh An up tempo, guitar-laced dance anthem that will have you instantly having déjà-vu, “Eternity” feels like Robert Miles’ 1995 anthem “Children” but with vocals. Brought to you by the artist that succeeded international fame with “Infinity,” this one is currently climbing the charts. The vocal delivery is especially forceful and almost desperate in some ways. Listen up bitches!

“Somewhere” by DJ Mog featuring Sarah Lynn OK, so this one has me perplexed. The “Sarah Lynn” vocal is a dead-ringer for Sarah McLachlan but it appears to be a terrific impersonation. That being said, it’s a stunning trance piece that I love to throw into the end of a set. Searching for that perfect new love? This song takes the stance that she knows you know she’s the “one” but don’t take your time realizing it. Thanks for turning it up with MyFlexRadio.com! ello OMG! readers. I would like to thank all of you for your emails and interest in my FYI column. I have lots of great news and stories to share with this issue’s edition. One of my favorite reality competition shows will be back… a bigger Project Runway is coming. Host Heidi Klum says each episode will now be 90 minutes long when it returns July 29 on the Lifetime network. In its eighth season, the show pits aspiring fashion designers against each other for a $100,000 cash prize. After spending a season in Los Angeles, Project Runway has returned to and is staying New York City. I mentioned this awhile back: Oscar winner Cher will make a much-anticipated return to acting opposite Christina Aguilera who will make her film debut in Burlesque. According to press materials, Aguilera will star as Ali, “a small-town girl with a big voice who escapes hardship to follow her dreams to LA.” There she begins to work for Tess (Cher), headliner and proprietor of The Burlesque Lounge. Kristen Bell, Alan Cumming, Eric Dane and Stanley Tucci co-star in the musical drama. Cher last appeared on the big screen as herself in the 2003 comedy Stuck on You (which was a huge bomb). Burlesque will open in theaters November 24. Below is one of the first photos from the film. Clubs come and go but Brooklyn's oldest historic gay bar, the Starlite Lounge may be in danger of closing after the building's owner sold the property. The lounge, on the corner of Bergen Street and Nostrand Avenue, has been at the location since the 1960s and is known as possibly the city's first black-owned gay bar. The new owner of the Crown Heights building wants the property to be empty. Oprah Winfrey is offering anyone the chance to submit audition videos for their own talk/reality show. Central Florida’s own Randy Ross & Stephanie Shipae are in high hopes. Good luck to both! On the local central Florida club news, check out Hamburger Mary’s Orlando for Hambingo with Carol Lee and Miss Sammy. If you all have so far missed this, this is the greatest thing since Apple Pie. Play Bingo with a twist and enjoy the great food.

Catch Orlando’s Parliament House Reunion show on Monday, July 19. I have been asked to perform and am very much looking forward to it. Personal shout out: Please watch America’s Got Talent and support our own Tristan and Kristen. They were the winner of the night club version or Orlando’s Got Talent and have already made it to Vegas! Gotta get out of here for now. Always remember this: you have to put up with the bees to taste that sweet honey! Till Next Time,

aptism. Bar Mitzvah. Circumcision. Hazing. These are all well known rites of passage in the American culture. What about the ultimate rite of passage in modern pop culture? The transition that every young, innocent, nubile female pop star goes through? These starlets emerge fresh off the tween assembly line seemingly destined to follow in the path of their predecessors. No matter how squeaky clean these girls may appear at first glance, there comes that moment in their pop star life when it’s time to make their bid for “maturity.” The lyrics get racier. The cleavage makes its first appearance. The shorts get shorter. Not a girl, not yet a woman. There are some things in life you never forget. I remember my first kiss. I remember the first time I rode a bike without training wheels. I remember the first time I snuck into a club. I also remember the very first time I became aware of Britney Spears.

Britney Spears: No doubt that the former Mouseketeer paved the way for tween starlets to make the transition from bubblegum pop star to sex kitten

Before & After:

I was sitting at my computer in the living room. Suddenly, this noise began to emanate from the television set. It was perhaps the worst singing voice I’d ever heard in my life. And it kept saying “oh baby baby” over and over. And over and over. A few thousand plays later, we all learned to love Brtiney’s “Baby One More Time.” Despite that awful croak that issued from her throat, her adorableness was undeniable. Barely sixteen and coyly the fantasy of every dirty old man, the young Britney Spears was the daughter of Middle America. But then as the clock neared midnight and the calendar neared Brit’s twentieth birthday, the ingénue scurried to convince her ever-loving public that she was indeed no longer a bubblegum pop star but instead a sexy and mature siren. All it took was a snake and a banging track from producers The Neptunes called “I’m A Slave 4 U.” And indeed, as Britney slithered her new “adult” self into the top ten, a new precedent was set for the path of the modern female pop star. Far less subtle was Christina Aguilera’s transition from tween to trash. As first glance, Miss Aguilera pushed her way onto the pop charts with the catchy and infectious “Genie In A Bottle.” Sure the lyrics were slightly suggestive in the most PG-rated way possible. Certainly neither man nor beast was prepared for the second coming of Christina. Black streaked hair. Assless chaps. And a track that made Britney‘s “I’m A Slave 4 U” sound like child’s play. Aguilera went as far as changing her name to Xtina in an effort to convince the public that she was indeed old enough to legally buy cigarettes. Many stars have morphed from silly to slutty but arguably none with the chutzpah of Christina Aguilera’s aptly titled “Dirrty.” It’s certainly a rough road from Disney to Dirrty. The latest angel to jump on the trollop bandwagon is Miss Miley Cyrus. After assaulting adult eyes and ears for a good few years with squeaky-clean Hannah Montana brand, at the ripe old age of seventeen Miley is here to let us know that she “Can’t Be Tamed.” More accurately, Miss Cyrus seems unable to forge a unique career path for herself. “Can’t Be Tamed” sounds like a third generation Britney Spears track with a fifth generation XTina video to boot. As the wheels of pop culture continue to spin, it’s reassuring to know that there’s a fetus somewhere that will be wearing short shorts on MTV in about six years or so.

Heartbreak Hotel music video directed by Paul Hunter (c) 1998 Arista Records

Whitney Houston perfectly sang about being done wrong in her 1998 smash hit "Heartbreak Hotel." The song's lyrics still resonate with listeners today

“This is the heartbreak hotel… this is the heartbreak hotel…”

It’s 2010 and more and more relationships are like damn puzzles. Should I devote more time to studying or to spending more time with my girlfriend?

Remember that Whitney Houston song? It’s an oldie but goodie that we haven’t heard in a good minute and you might know where I’m going to go with this edition of my LOL column. Can any female explain to me why they would tell their significant other that they love them, want to get married, have kids, spend their entire life with them and then 3 months later… BOOM the bitch is talking to not just one girl but the whole county? I find it hard to believe that any girl is different from the crowd. Lately, I have been seeing one heartbreak after the other.

My job is wearing me out, but my girlfriend wants to go out to drinks with friends… but I’m tired. What do I do? Pursuing success scholastically or in one’s career can undoubtedly lead to possible heartbreak. Today, it seems your significant other cares more about themselves than you acing your next exam or doing well at work. Quality time vs. self-improvement time. There exists a balance of being the best girlfriend as well as being the best student at school and employee at work. It takes some time, but if you sit back and truly analyze how to place all of the puzzle pieces to make them work… then checking into the “heartbreak hotel” won’t ever be an option.

You watch all the girls in the club to study how they move, the way they talk and how they act out in the world. You’re simply seeing if their personality sets your standards of being “she’s the one.” How many times (not just for my girl readers but for my guys also) do you, after staring at someone who turns you on for so long, see something they do that instantly turns you off? That turn-off can be anything. One of the turn-offs that I get the biggest laugh out of: Cheaters who say that someone is their cousin, yet are caught at the end of the night forcing their tongues down one another’s throats. Cousins, huh? Is that how cousins spend time with one another?

There are those times when a relationship’s puzzle pieces aren’t even worth putting together. When someone is truly weighing you down from being successful, then it’s high-time to put on your Timberland boots and kick them to the curb. A career and school are already hard enough work, why have a relationship that is supposed to be fun and exciting be even harder work? It’s all up to YOU to make the decision and figure out what will work best for you and your significant other and most importantly… what will keep you from singing that Whitney Houston “Heartbreak Hotel” song to yourself!

M

ore than 200 years after the birth of the 16th American president, the Land of Lincoln and its largest city are enjoying banner years. The most recent Illinois political-star-turned-president has put new sights on the Chicago tourist map; these along with trips up the former Sears (now Willis) Tower and out to Wrigley Field, will make your Chicago vacation an American classic. Where did my last Carmen San Diego adventure take me? Chicago Illinois… and I loved this trip. Granted my other half and I went in the spring time, so I can’t tell you what the summers would be like. Compared to Florida, the warmest average summer time temperature in Chi-town is 83 degrees; I think I can handle it. As for winters in Chicago, anyone who knows me well will tell you that I can melt snow just looking at it. So, Chicago, I’m hooked. I think the one thing that I loved the most about Chi-town is the fact that it’s a "real" city. Everybody seems to identify themselves as Chicagoans. Coming from Florida, where people try not to identify themselves as being from the state and instead identify themselves with whatever city they live in. Chicago has a certain strong sense of pride in itself and its rich history. That pride is evident from the looming skyscrapers, the historic buildings and the Magnificent Mile. Chicago’s strong sense of pride is also proudly displayed by frenzied sports fans whether it’s for their baseball, football or basketball teams. Chicagoans take their sports seriously! I found the people in Chicago to be generally friendly. Yes there is that fast paced lifestyle that comes with living in a big city like Chicago, but people will still take time to greet you, help you with directions and usually with a friendly, genuine smile. This friendly hospitality started, believe it or not at O’Hara International Airport. We arrived in Chicago at 11am. Not knowing exactly which train to take from the Airport to our Hotel downtown, I asked a Transit Authority worker for help. She was genuine, polite and quite helpful - $2.25 later and we were on our way to the Northern Loop by subway train. Yes for a mere pittance, you can hop a train, pocket your cash and be on your way

– no fussing with overpriced cab fares. One train transfer later and we were 3 blocks away from our Hotel: the Inn of Chicago. We quickly learned that the main sources of transportation in Chicago are train, bus or bicycle. Cabs can fill in as a source, in a pinch, but I would say only as a last resort. Back to the Inn, we were greeted with genuine big city hospitality. The front desk clerk, well groomed and quite professional, checked us in quickly. She answered all of our questions and sent us on our way. We found our room on Hotels.com ($59 a night for Downtown Chicago) so I was a bit apprehensive at first. But let me tell you, from the modern and well appointed lobby – with FREE wi-fi; to our charming corner room on the 20th floor with an awesome view of the west side of the city, I was more than impressed. The Inn of Chicago is conveniently located just off the corner of Michigan and Ohio Avenues; within walking distance of the shopping district. The room was classy, well appointed and tastefully decorated in a feng shui oriental flavor. The bathroom had a comfortable shower/tub combo and Tocco brand grooming products (nice touch.) Having booked online with a bargain hunter’s web-site, this place certainly exceeded my expectations. I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Chi-town! But as you can imagine, we didn’t come to Chicago to just stay in the room, even if it did have a fabulous view. A quick freshening up and a wardrobe change and we were ready to hit the streets. First stop, Nordstrom’s at East Grand, on the Magnificent Mile (Michigan Ave.). Trust me, we struck pay dirt by meeting this wonderful gay guy named Steven Weix, a Pacesetter at the men’s fragrance counter, and he told us every where to see and be seen in Chi-town. Armed with Steven’s “Gay Guide to Chi-town,” we hit the pavement and immediately headed south to Filene’s Basement and Nordstrom’s Rack; two of the top places in Chicago to find great fashions without the high fashion price tag. I snagged a GREAT “clubkid” dress shirt (regularly $139) from English Laundry for a mere $39.99. After a whirlwind shopping spree, we decided to head back to the Inn, for some

downtime and that ever famous “disco” power nap before tripping the lights fantastic in Boystown. I figured I can sleep at home for free, so it was time to do it up big in Chicago. Here’s how we spent 3 days and 2 nights on a budget:

Pizzeria Uno 29 E Ohio St, www.unos.com The original home of Chicago style pizza, grabbing a slice at Uno’s is a “can’t miss” for any true pizza lover. Plus it’s a great place to gab about Chicago’s love affair with the pie.

Clubs:

Entertainment:

Spin 800 W Belmont, www.spin-nightclub.com This is an eye-candy club kid extravaganza! They have it all, great drink specials, karaoke, comedy, fierce drag revues and dancing. It doesn’t start hoping until around 11pm and lasts until 3am.

Navy Pier 600 E Grand Ave, Built after the Great Fire, the Pier was originally built to offer locals an extra exit route in the event of a catastrophe. Used during the War to house and train Navy personnel, hence the name – the Pier is rich in history. It has been renovated to house eateries, shopping and an event pavilion. Many of the city’s annual festivals are held here.

Sidetrack 3349 N Halsted, www.sidetrackchicago.com One of the oldest and friendliest bars in Boystown. On the Monday night when we were there, they were doing “Showtune Night.” I kid you not, it was packed. The idea is to play videos of numerous showtunes throughout the bar – and patrons join in singing and acting out their favorite show tunes. It was so campy and is a must see on your trip to Halsted. Hydrate 3458 N Halsted, www.hydratechicago.com This place is well known for its after hours scene with one of the best blackout party’s in all of Boystown.

Eats: Firefly French Bistro 3335 N Halsted St, www.fireflyonhalsted.com Comfortable, quiet and dim lighting make this the ideal spot for a date night dinner during the week, although it can get noisy and crowded on the weekends. Overall great food, casual atmosphere and a good mixture of organic foods – if that’s your thing. One of Boystown’s best kept secrets! La Sardine 111 N Carpenter St, www.lasardine.com This is definitely not your casual dining experience, so dress the part! Having dinner there on a Tuesday night, we caught the Prix Fixe menu. 3 course meal for $25. Anything on the menu: a starter, entrée and dessert for $25 total. This is a must when in Chicago – and it is right across the street from the Oprah Winfrey Studios.

Alder Planetarium 1300 S Lake Shore Dr, www.navypier.com One of the best planetariums in the country. Nice place to spend a blustery wet day and absorb all there is to know about the stars in the sky. John G Shedd Aquarium 1200 S Lake Shore Dr, www.sheddaquarium.org Tranquil, peaceful, relaxing; the Shedd has something to offer everyone.

Transportation: Chicago Transit Authority Pass I would encourage you to buy one of these right off the bat. Check out www.transitchicago.com for more information.

Posters showcase her face emerging from blackness with piercing green eyes and glistening lips. The tagline teases: WHO IS SALT? On July 23, Angelina Jolie returns as a badass CIA officer accused of being a Russian spy. And let’s face it, no one does super secret spy better than her. In fact, Columbia Pictures pulled the project from Tom Cruise and rewrote it just for Jolie. Now that’s star power! I’ve been in love with Angelina since I was sixteen years old. It was 1996 and she was the unknown lead stealing screen time in the cult hit Hackers when she played Kate aka “Acid Burn.” Immediately, I was obsessed. My friends started calling me Billy Jolie and the name stuck. Who was this girl with the cropped black hair and amazing lips? Fourteen years later, I’m still following her career. She’s evolved like a snake shedding its skin. (And she’d probably appreciate that analogy.) Each time, moving forward with more purpose, more polished skill, more depth… OMG! Magazine takes a look Gia (1998) back at Angelina Jolie’s greatest moments. Gia: “You scare the shit out of people so they can't see how scared you are.” Breakout role would be an understatement. Angelina was Gia Carangi. The film chronicled the destruction of the supermodel’s life and career in the 1980’s where ultimately she succumbed to AIDS. Jolie is known for living her parts and after wrapping the film, she shaved her head, moved to NYC and quit acting for a brief period.
