individual/ academic guide - ar. shilpa chandawarkar year v - thesis/ june 2012- november 2013 location - bandra, mumbai Through this dissertation I’ve tried to give Mumbai, my city, what it needs - an identity. The Skytower 360 is an observation tower combined with a museum of the city which takes the visitor from past via the present onwards to the future of Mumbai. Besides designing an iconic structure, this dissertation addresses the issue of lack of public spaces in Mumbai and opens up the waterfront of Bandra for public use. The entire experience is designed to create a sense of pride in the heart of a Mumbai-kar, and a sense of awe for the visitors of this city. SkyTower 360 is a place that takes the visitor to a different position, to a much higher point from where he can read the city, enjoy the visual diversity, locate his surroundings, relate to it, as opposed to the everyday eye-level interaction with the city. A place which gives an OVERVIEW of Mumbai...

The site chosen for this intervention is in the heart of the city next to a water promenade. Mumbai is a linear city, with a long natural seaside. These spaces along the arabian sea have immense potential for developing public spaces. Bandra is suburb central to the old Mumbai and the newly developing extension of Mumbai metropolitan Region. Bandra is a hub for educational and commercial activities and is one of the most favorite visitor destination. The proximity, centrality and the activities taking place in Bandra makes it the best place for an iconic structure for the city of Mumbai.

The SkyTower emerging from the seaside and rising tall, signifies that never-back-down spirit of a Mumbai-kar. The landscape at the site is designed as a constraining membrane that has given way to the emerging Sky Tower. The membrane which has been penetrated and cracks formed into it. These cracks act as pathways leading to the structure.

p h y sica l model The scaled model of the tower is made of sticks of bamboo, 8-10 mm in dia. 14 sticks of bamboo were held together with the help of metal hooks screwed on the inside of a wooden ring, 120mm in dia. and twisted at both ends to achieve the desired shape of the structure. The base is made out of laser cut chipboard. This model was fabricated by me under the guidance of my father.

NARRATIVES OF A COUNTRYSIDE rural infrastructure development program

individual/ academic guide - ar. vilas avachat year iii - studio i / june 2010 - september 2010 location - medha village, maharashtra medium - ink on gateway A small village at the base of a historic fort ‘Avachitgad’ is the case for this studio. Investigating the effects of modern urbanization on rural India is the central theme of this project. This village - a community of not more than 40 houses - sits adjacent to the national highway, is passed through by a railway track and often visited by tourists as a basecamp for the fort. These interactions result in the aspirations for urban infrastructure development. Through the studies and analyses conducted, a program is derived which would address the villagers’ urban aspirations, but retain the architectural language. The concentration of planning the program across the village is on making the lake precinct a memorable experience for the villager and the visitor alike.

individual/ academic guide - ar. snehal chitale year iv - studio i / june 2011 - october 2011 location - oxford golf & country club, pune The Oxford golf & country club located in Pune is spread across a hundred acres and is surrounded by hills on its three sides. The site for this studio included much of the steep hills combined with a complex program of banquet halls, sports and leisure club, residential hotel and golf clubhouse. The challenge was to create a functional circulation plan with a design that encopasses the brief. The proposal responds to the steep contours by effectively using the slope to create a stepped and a multi-level structure. Incidental open spaces, and courtyards with plantation are planned across the structure and is a characteristic of this design.

public gallery for the visual arts

individual/ academic guide - ar. ritesh joshi year ii - studio iii / september 2009 - november 2009 location - sir j j school of arts campus, mumbai medium - ink on gateway The J J School of Arts and Architecture is one of the finest school for the creative arts in India. The assignment for this studio was to design a state of the art public gallery for the students of this school to exhibit their works. While primarily for students, it could also be leased out to generate revenue and could be used as an event space. Therefore, this art gallery has four main components, the exhibition center, the workshop, the multipurpose area and auditorium and the cafeteria. The design is inspired by the shape of a pyramid, the form of which is experimented with to generate interesting effects of rays of natural light. The exhibition area draws light from glazed faces above it and centralizes in the central masterpiece gallery. The flooring of this central space is made of structural glass which further percolates light to spread into the workshop below.

individual/ academic guide - ar. vinit mirkar year iii - landscape studio i / july 2010 - sept 2010 location - kanheri caves, national park, mumbai medium - colored ink on paper Through this studio we dealt with the fundamentals of landscaping in public spaces. The Kanheri caves are national heritage Buddhist monuments carved out in basalt rock. Located in the national park, a vast reserved green space in Mumbai, it is visited by a number of tousrits around the world. Our assignment was to design a tourist plaza at the base of these caves which would crate a memorable experience for the user. The entire plaza is designed on the lines emerging from a tree on the lower edge of the site. The basic principle of radiation dictates the orientation of the structures and pathways. The amphitheatre sits from where the lines radiate from as if Buddha’s teachings are radiating from the amphitheatre. The central Bodhi tree area is introduced to give visitors a chance to meditate sitting under a transplanted Bodhi tree just like Buddha. Designed as a positive-negetive space the area below ground is provided for meditation, and area above ground, for circum-ambulation around the sacred Bodhi tree.

An interior design assignment which required us to design the interiors of a small studio apartment as a bachelor pad. This design efficiently utilizes the available sapce and segregates it into four different areas: entrance, pantry, sleep, work. The segregation is achieved subtly by using visual seperation using frames. The frames and furniture merge into eachother to form a continuous loop resulting in a unique design.

DOCUMENTING DADA HARIR NI VAAV lik trophy // nasa india 2012 group/ competition college entry for ‘lik documentation competition’ organized by ‘nasa-india’ [team strength-32 members] my role - head of documentation/actual site visit/detailed documentation and analysis of structure/co-ordination documented structure - dada harir ni vaav (stepwell) location - asarwa village, ahmedabad, india medium - ink on gateway result - speacial mention award [4th place] amongst 73 entries across india in the year 2012 The theme for 2012 LIK documentation competition was “water and architecture”. This struture in response to the theme was chosen after pilot visits to various sites because of its unique typology. Stepwells, first innovated in the Gujarat region in India, was an answer to the local arid and dry climate. These structures were built to access the deep resources of water below ground level. This specific stepwell is five stories below ground and was built in the late 15th century. With a team of 32 members, this structure took 5 weeks to document. The work prsented here is a compilation of some precision hand drawings of the documented structure made by the drawing team, as presented in the annual NASA convention, Ahmedabad, 2012.

This project is located in Mumbai and is an educational building being developed for the Thakur group. The space planning is functional and straightforward. Modular classroom design for flexibility in planning is the vital aspect of this design. The structure consists of a basement and 8 upper floors designed for a capacity of 4000 students. The building is planned over 18,000 sqft. of footprint on a site which admeasures upto 35,000 sqft. The 30M tall RCC structure stands on a raft foundation 5M below ground level.
