Waterfront meadow proposal

Vision The waterfront meadow will be a pedestrian friendly space, which focuses on providing a space to sit and relax or be encompassed within a lively active atmosphere. Whether it during the day or night activities will keep the space occupied at all times, boosting the presence of the space. It will rejuvenate and transform the space. The ground plan will be sculpted to create a new public landscape that will accommodate a wide variety of events while permeating the site with commercial amenities.

The Frame The surrounding space that encases the site of Waterfront Meadow all work in sync with each other. Currently there is no sense of satisfaction when arriving to the site these shared spaces will heighten the arrival and feed lively atmosphere into the Waterfront Meadow site. These spaces are important as they will work cohesively with Waterfront Meadow to create a coherent pedestrian focused experience of downtown Auckland.

The Picture Waterfront Meadow as an isolated park is small compared to Victoria park..

The Framed Picture The pedestrian spaces that frame it work together as a collection of spaces to create a whole picture. Waterfront Meadow is holistic, it is part of the wider context and in intimately connected and explicable only in reference to the whole.

key Pedestrian / Green spaces Collective green space Victoria Park comparative size

The Proposal The first imagery that comes to mind when wanting to achieve a waterfront meadow, is a green open ground floor space that distinctively separates the commercial aspect with the park aspect. However to avoid this the commercial and the green public space will be intertwined and multidimensional, layered to create a unique and interesting space that encourages discovery.

Due to the existing building HSCB casting a large shadow over the majority of the site, the park space would suffer. The park would be shaded by the HSCB building and would compromise the usability of the park as it would be cold and without direct sunlight. Voids could open up the volume of the HSCB building so that direct warm sunlight can still come through but this would still create shade problems at different times of the year where the sun path is constantly changing. Also with the HSCB building standing beside the Zurick, the buildings create a towering overwhelming sensation, removing or relocating the volume of HSCB along side Zurick would open up the site and make it more pedestrian orientated space.

Waterfront meadow will provide a highly visible green component to the downtown area where nature is sparse. It will clarify the visual connection between the Britomart precinct and the eastern viaduct by creating a new open physical connection between the spaces thus creating a seamless experience of lively collective spaces. The design provides spaces for leisure and relaxation amid the fast-paced movements whilst connecting spaces along the waterfront with pedestrian corridors.

Beneath the park will be the retail spaces, entertainment and dining venues. The collection of buildings will be low rise to keep it human scale. Whereas the office spaces will be a tower to accommodate the loss of HSBC and also to provide extra office spaces. The commercial outlets will be located on ground level along the pedestrian corridors of the site, this allows this space to be active and lively but in a sense away from the resting spaces so that you can enjoy both separately.

Harnessing natural elements

Sun

Harness and harvest natural sunlight through open areas and integration photo voltaic panels within facades.

Rainwater

Green spaces will absorb run off water. Collection and filtration of excess rainwater can be used within the facilities.

Wind

Creating forms that channels wind through the building in a way that can lead to wind harvesting.

The building will feature a green carpet which acts as an extension of the landscape onto the building roof. The key aspect of this design is to achieve the amalgamation of park space and commercial space within one area to provide undulating green public space for gathering, leisure, picnics and interaction between people whilst also being realistic to the commercial value of the site. It fuses public landscape with commercial spaces.
