WATERFRONT MEADOW RE-IMAGINES THE DOWNTOWN SHOPPING CENTRE SITE AS AN OASIS FOR PEDESTRIANS TO ESCAPE THE URBAN FABRIC. Waterfront Meadow re-imagines the downtown shopping centre site as an oasis for pedestrians to escape the urban fabric. The design utilizes the vast space for pleasurable purposes creating an entertainment and eatery hub dotted with idyllic green spaces. This node point is activated night and day entertaining a range of audiences. It manifests as a shared space and throughway, creating links between the different entities of downtown Auckland. The design intertwines green space and commercial amenities which respondÂŹ to the commercial value of the site whilst also providing quality public space.
THE DESIGN ACTS AS A TASTER OF THE POTENTIAL EXPERIENCES THAT THE WIDER WATERFRONT AREA HAS TO OFFER. The Waterfront Meadow design manifests shared spaces that network beyond the boundaries of the downtown shopping centre site where pedestrian focused spaces construct a coherent connection between the surrounding spaces and the site itself to enhance the overall experience of Auckland’s waterfront area. The design acts as a taster of the potential experiences that the wider waterfront area has to offer. It provides directional guides and throughways to spaces that weren’t previously connected to one another creating diverse journeys for those exploring the area.

GREEN SPACE WILL TRANSITIONS PEOPLE INTO A CALMER PEDESTRIAN FOCUSED AREA WHICH ENCOURAGES A COMBINATION OF EXPLORATION AND RELAXATION. Visitors to the Waterfront Meadow site are filtered through a perimeter of green space. This initial exposure to green space draws people in from the hustle bustle of downtown Auckland and transitions them into a calmer pedestrian focused area which encourages a combination of exploration and relaxation. Within the confines of the green perimeter the green spaces move upwards through the layers of the building creating cluster spaces that draw people in and act as a relaxing escape space from the fast moving city.

TIME ACTIVATION AND FUNCTION The multitude of facilities within the Waterfront Meadow site provides visitors such as commuters, office workers, shoppers, foodies, culture seekers and urban explorers with a variety of enjoyable activities. This site will be activated continuously during the day providing offices, green space, retail spaces, eateries, gym and child care facilities, and during the night, with bars, restaurants, indoor and outdoor theatrical performances and nightclubs. The site also provides throughways to other parts of downtown Auckland creating optional journeys for commuters and those wishing to explore the waterfront area.

WATERFRONT MEADOW WILL PROVIDE A NODAL POINT IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA CLUSTERING PEOPLE, STRUCTURES AND LANDSCAPES TO FACILITATE EXPLORATION, RELAXATION AND ENTERTAINMENT. The Waterfront Meadow provides downtown Auckland with a multitude of opportunities, experiences and journeys. It creates much needed links between the separate areas of the waterfront and provides a node point and central hub of entertainment and relaxation. The continuous activation of the space maximizes commercial potential while providing the public with an area that is always alive with opportunity and entertainment. This space will become the a significant part of the identity of the city and provide a nodal point in the downtown area clustering people, structures and landscapes to facilitate exploration, relaxation and entertainment.
