Bayswater Marina
The entire Bayswater site is reclaimed land and is surrounded by a cantered rock wall solely purposed to stop the ocean from overflowing. This rock wall has been overcome by weathering effects and some of the rock material has been broken due to salt water + wind damage forming a rough hollow appearance. Only the rock materials that have been affected by wind and ocean forces result in this occurrence. This shows how eventually our engineered manmade structures, if not correctly maintained, will soon be significantly transformed and oppressed by nature.

This is another aspect of the cantered rock wall which shows how nature eventually overrules our artificial built world. There are shellfish which have adapted to living on the rocks up to the high tide line. They are restricted by the water line as they need water to survive and function normally. The density of shellfish on the rock material disperses as the water line increases in height. This is just one factor which evidently shows the importance of water in the location’s ecosystem and how both high and low tides contribute differently to visible relationships present on the diverse site.

The Site is a combination of both man-made and natural elements existing in unison with one another. There must be an even balance of these factors in order to optimize healthy mental and physical well-being. Trees located on the outer coast of the site are more deformed than those on the inner areas because their overall structural appearance and growth rates alter due to weathering effects. These trees are unique as they have a primary structure system of branches and roots which hold up a sub-structure pod system. These natural relationships could easily be converted into future design principles.
Bayswater Marina
Bayswater Marina has a various number of derelict buildings some of which are still functional like this old boating shed. The idea of placing a small storage shed on top of thin wooden stilts is a common theme being frequently used throughout the old buildings on site. This portrays a visual essence of lightness and how delicately the structure is connecting with the slanted ground beneath it. Even though it may be outdated, the old boating shed is a pristine example of touching the ground lightly which is essential for reducing negative environmental effects in both design and construction phases.

This image is a visual representation of weathering on the site. Every surface has been dramatically altered due to wind and water damage. There are no flat materials in any of the natural elements present on the site. Through natural processes the diverse layers of rock formations and textures are exposed to the elements, as there is zero shelter from the coastal weather. The earth has been cut into rough shapes which portray the subtle intensity of the environment and show how coastal sites like this one all need more critical consideration when dealing with weathering and future proofing.

One outstanding aspect of Bayswater Marina which can be extremely diverse depending on weather and surrounding environment is atmosphere. Inhabitants use atmosphere as a fundamental element when deciding the quality and overall accomplishment of a space. This first image is a visual representation of the levels of successful atmosphere on the site, when the weather is fine. The areas around the outer edges of the site are more atmospheric and enjoyable as they have pristine views of the city and connect people with the water whereas the inside space is primarily filled with boring car parks and tar seal.

These eight spots were chosen to help understand relationships on the site. They all shared common key conditions such as constant industrial noise in the background as well as animal life and wave breaking echoes. The spots with wharfs are more enjoyable as you are able to fully engage with the ocean. The site was quite empty in terms of residential density. It seems like people use the marina as a temporary transport option and don’t stop to embrace what’s around them. There is nothing currently on the site which emphasizes public interaction between the travelers and the local community.

Atmosphere has the potential to alter depending on the weather at the current time on site. Bad weather is a key catalyst when determining atmosphere. Once it started pouring down with rain, this had varied effects on the atmosphere in different spots on the marina. Some spots were secretly enhanced with glimpses of mystery and aww where as others aren’t even worth mentioning. This image shows my experiences with the atmosphere in the worse weather and how I responded to them. Atmosphere drives how we experience a space and this atmosphere can be externally altered and this could lead to strong design ideologies.

This Visual Image depicts the overall atmosphere potential on Bayswater Marina. You can clearly see all combinations of atmosphere and how they affect one person internally. The contrasting colors work in unison with one another to make the image effective and readable. The main idea being portrayed here is that atmosphere is dependent on its external environment which in reality has an overall effect on our own mental well-being. We must future proof our urban spaces so they do not degrade or outdate. The functions of our spaces must be flexible and allow for adaptation.
This image shows bad weather atmosphere on one side of the site. This is the positive reaction I mentioned in the above text in which the city and background are just visible. There is a powerful sense of mystery and absolute integration of foreground and background elements. When designing a sculptural but functional building for this Bayswater site we must capture or frame the varying appearances of the atmosphere. Responses to atmosphere depend on each individual but an overall level of respect for a space will have to be not only met, but surpassed.
