BTOOK 1 AYL ORCHAN
BRITOMART PRECINCT PART I
ARRIVAL
Taylor Chan
MONDAY
Morning The sounds of the city are drowned by the cacophony of bus engines and chattering feet. Each passenger is scurrying to their destinations. The station disperses its users every ten minutes until noon. They border the corners not daring to walk into the open square. A group of smokers on a smoke break occupy the corners of these normally unused areas.
Midnight A green and red light from the stock market billboard is a memory of yesterday’s trading. The seats under the shelter will be unoccupied till the morning. A cool breeze channels through the ornamental glass canopy.
FRIDAY Morning A sigh of relief from a man dressed in a well-fitted navy blazer. It is the last day of the week. The smoke from the coffee wafts upwards as he boards the packedbus. A student in a rucksack sprints across the busy intersection just before the green light initiates. The downtown is a temporary stop for those leading a busy life.
Midnight The buses offload the last wave of partygoers. The sound of stumbling feet and drunkenness fill the air. The once empty bus shelters are occupied and act as a refuge for those wanting to escape the city.
Epilogue
Today the Downtown is fragmented in pieces: buildings, trees, zones like a series of totally unrelated notes played with one finger on a piano. Outside, the asphalt and brick pavement lead nowhere. Inside the characteristic heritage surroundings are merely forgotten amidst the chaos. Above the towers are in constant conversation Below, the Railway underpass are concrete walls lined with consumerism. The goal is to link and reconnect these spaces visually and sensually enabling the downtown area to be seen as a whole rather than a jumble of buildings and voids

THE EVENTFUL CITY
01 THE INNENSTADT(CAFE) 02 BUSKERS UNDERPASS 03 AERIAL ARTERIAL
THE INNENSTADT
Morning Elsewhere, behind the worn mahogany counters a Barista works through the early hours of the morning. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee draws a new pathway for the routine commuters. Once drawn in the noise of the outside is forgotten momentarily. The intricate brickwork and concrete flooring is a welcome break from the glass facades. Suspended above by wooden frames is a collection of books, functional in the morning, an ornament at night. The arches of windows overlook past the cobbled town square - a hint to the heritage and history.
Midnight A cone of light illuminates the aged wooden grain on long bar table. The thin steel window frames by the entrance are a silhouette to those inside. The clatter of champagne glasses and beer mugs is a commonality as the night progresses. Luxuriant enclosure, little sky and warm brick work create the inward life of intimacy and cordiality. There is here a bright and blooming human vigour.
‘The Innenstadt’
BUSKERS UNDERPASS
Morning Here is known, but the beyond is unknown, is boundless and mysterious, hidden by the concrete stairs and corner of the underpass wall. A symphony of jazz and drums emanate onto the QE Square from the depths of the underpass. The acoustical quality of the chamber echoes playful tunes providing a welcome background to travellers. The rattling of coins and sight of perplexed crowds gather and dissipate during the day.
Midnight The underpass at night is filled with excitement. These once lifeless underpasses have been given a new lease. Warm Uplighting populates the bare concrete walled surfaces. The melodic sounds flow following partygoers and those who are residing back to the trains.
Buskers Underpass
THE AERIAL ARTERIAL
Morning Here up in the sky is the alluring vantage point of the city. It is a destination where people come to stay. The cool interior with the steel joints contrast with the glass detailing on the windows. A physical conversation between each of these towers occurs creating a visual and playful link.
Midnight At night when lit up the aerial links act as a lantern lighting up parts of the towers. It is an attraction where people come to stay and view the city at night.
The Aerial Links between the towers
Epilogue
The Innestadt, Buskers Underpass and Aerial links act as unification of specific parts of the city and its design. The Innestadt(Cafe) aims to link the downtown square and the Westfield facade facing the existing Post Office. The Busker’s underpass is an encouragement for users to use it more frequently while also contributing to the square itself. The Aerial links to each tower is a visual connection to the ongoing conversation between each of the four towers bounding the downtown square. These ideas are all think about the idea of making people stay in the unused areas of Britomar and activate the town square.
