First of all, this Auckland Council GIS map shows the physical location of subject site and relationship with surrounding. Currently, Mapuse Title purpose of recreational and passive outdoor. This reclaimed council records indicate the section is a reclaimed land by land marina locates in an inner harbour, north of Auckland CBD, East of Northshore harbour bridge. By reclaimed as a peninsula, there are water views at three directions, include city view and bridge view which both are breathtakingly. This series of satellite maps record the history of development. A small reclaimed land was exist to serve boat ramp in 1959. In the course of the years, to meet local requirement and owner profit, larger land reclaim developed and marina formed. As a logical trend, the city needs to be extended to outer field or into the sea; More facilities need to be altered and added. Obviously, then more and more boats park in the sea and on land. The development has never stoped, and it keeps moving. The inertia cause something must change, something like more reclaimed land will be added into sea, or reclaimed building will happen on existing land.
During modeling 3D site process, the understanding of topographical aspects become more and more depth. The vertical and horizontal relationship between land and sea become more clear. The subject section is reasonably flat. The plane is approx. 3 meters higher than sea level. If the 3D model turned up side down. There are some similar aspects between the reclaimed peninsula and tree. Reclaimed land extends into the sea is just like tree grows into air. The reclaimed land like tree trunk, the trestles like branch and boats like leaves. When the ‘tree’ getting luxuriant foliage, it will attain distinction.
These trestles and ramps connect artificial land and natural water in depth. They are really small compared to sea, but that is the opportunity that they allow people to touch and feel the sea directly. Especially when people stand on the end, the feeling is exciting. As mentioned before, trestle like branch, boat like leave; Branch serve leave, trestle serve boat. Sometimes bird like stay at end of branch because of wide view, in a similar way, people may attempt to feel standing on the end of trestle. From this perspective, if a building can extend into the sea, it will provide a unique experience for occupant.
People use the volcano rocks as main material to create reclaimed land, which are not belong here originally. Reclaimed land is a way that people conquer nature. However, that is not ‘one way’. Some natural species are trying to reclaimed back, such as plants and sea life. That is also a sign that nature accept or adapt the artificial activity in its own way. The inspiration is future development can be explored around how to create common prosperity with nature life. Developing and maintaining the environment in strict standards is the key point for sustainability.
This series of historical and current images show the changing of surrounding. There are both positive development and negative development. Over time, considering 3 houses most nearby, one house was removed and became a park, another two houses were rebuilt. These are positive changing because the new houses archive higher living quality. However, the club building is a negative example, because the function of the building and the certain location is no longer popular at the present day. Therefore, in terms of the existing baywater marina, it is very necessary to reactive the lonely car park by extraordinaire reclaimed architecture.
The scratch lines on black column indicate its function. The vertical column is fixed to sea bed. During high tide or wave, the horizontal platform can floating up and down within vertical limit. From material point of view, the timber create floating force, the concrete create durable surface, the rubber column create flexibility. The combination of these three materials create a functional system. As a structural idea, this method could be considered for future building design. The building can be changed somehow at the same time when environment change. In the other words, building can be flexible and adapt the changing factors.

Micro climate is a must to research. The temperature, moisture and sunlight are not different to anywhere else in Auckland. But these three aspects need to be considered in design. As Auckland typical south east direction wind in, it blow the whole peninsula from the sea. The existing trees and temporary buildings contribute as wind stop barrier. In addition, the trestle around reduce wave effectively. To improve occupant living quality and safety, it is important to create wind shelter and wave barrier to minimise the impact to the site.
Various type of barriers exist around the site. There are different purpose such as for people, for vehicle and for boat. Fence are useful for maintain privacy with certain height. Balustrade are necessary for providing safety for pedestrian. The existing car park barrier design are very smart. The log lay down to stop vehicle but it does not stop the field of view. The stone stopper allow the visual penetration through, and also create a beautiful landscape. On the whole, the barriers could be designed to satisfy both function and visual purpose.
Of course a numbers of sailboat moored in this marina. This is quite a unique view which is rare to see in many other countries. The white vertical mast and blue horizontal sea create a luxury view. This is very attractive for many foreigners, and some young foreigners even take wedding photo with unique marina view as background. The inspiration from this is the opportunity to design with sailboat element as a theme, as a landmark in central of harbour, to let more people form different countries know New Zealand, this sport and the local lifestyle.
