JOB NO. PLAN NO.

If I told you I knew of a shortcut to walk from the city to the ocean, would you come with me? Would you be curious as to where this shortcut might begin, and how it may end up? What is this notion, from city to ocean about? Because now, the ocean is at one end and the city at the other, it seems. If I told you I knew of a rooftop terrace filled with trees and soft hanging lights, lined with timber benchseats and luxurious lounge chairs, would you come with me? Would you be curious as to what view you might see from up there? What is this treehut and does it exist, for this city is not filled with play, but power. And if I told you I knew of a pianist playing in an open sunlit square, surrounded by gardens to nestle amongst and scented candles alight, would you come with me? Might you be curious as to the talent of the musician, and the setting they’re playing within. What is this place you speak of, love, leisure and liberty, in our city filled with suits and secrets. Come with me, and I will take you to a place not motivated by the commercial dollar nor bound by time. I will take you to a place not sacrificed for nett lettable area nor buses or vehicles. I will take you to the craftsman, the market stalls and the artisan of velvety delights. I will take you to the grocer, the bookstore and the connoisseur of whiskey & wine. And through these people come moments of place, places of texture, constancy of time, facets of scent; through these people come now, this moment. Be here by my side, and we will go together to read, to drink, to play and to stay. To climb, to chat and to sort out business for the day. To observe craftsmen at work and the painter’s deft touch at hand. Whilst the florist assorts and the barista’s hot delights are in demand. From a dead-end space to a never-ending place. The day, the night, and the in-between delight. From a public-private debate to personable and ornate. This place of ours, in the City of Sea.

The place I speak is a market adorned with old long bricks, crafted timber and draping silk. Trees billow and lovers chat over cake and coffee on the alcove above. Concrete formwork creates texture and light, whilst tiny bright mosaics in the entrance to the butcher give life and personality. Rustic dark mahogany line the floor of the wine cellar, whilst a painted mural livens the passway from Little Queen to the square. The offices above house creative forces - ad agencies, architects and jewelers teamed with necessary go-to’s such as the lawyer, the dentist and the IT guy. A classic apartment level sits atop, with mezzanines and double-height light streaming through. A seat on a cafe chair in the lane affords a moment to stop and think. Where am I in this city? The scent of salt air and form of the Ferry Building makes it all so familiar. A nod to the old yet I feel so new. So fresh in this quaint spot. The sound of children playing in the kindergarten above whilst businessmen in suits stroll through the square. Is this where I think it is? In the heart of Auckland City? So it is my friend, a new and improved take. The towers are at the perimetre, but this space here is for you and I and all those that pass by. An assertion amidst civic importance and commercial gain, this place I speak of is to be known as Stanley Lane.
