Pacific Island migrants were increasingly populating the Grey Lynn area during the 1960s. By 1971, Pacific Island ethnicity made up a quarter of Grey Lynn’s population. However, now Grey Lynn is made up of a predominately “white middle class population”. Statistics NZ state that 72.7 percent of people in Grey Lynn said they belong to the European ethnic group, compared with 65.7 percent for Auckland City and 80.1 percent for all of New Zealand. This raises questions of “Where did the Pacific Island migrants go?” “Where is the cultural diversity?” “How can we build a more diverse, cosmopolitan community in Grey Lynn?”

Within Grey Lynn’s urban renewal, the process/ phenomenon of gentrification is evident. Due to the community undergoing gentrification, the average income increases. Poorer pre-gentrification residents who are unable to pay increase rents or property taxes are forced out. Consequently, many issues arise from the process of gentrification within the Grey Lynn community. An increase in the average income means that more houses will be valued at a higher rate, making much of the property within the area priced higher than $1 million. With housing prices increases, comes a demand for more housing supply, especially more affordable housing.

If more affordable housing nowadays is pushed out from the centre of Acukland and sprawled on the periphery, due to high rising rincome and property prices increasing, how can we bring affodable housing back? The issue of “Affordable housing” also raises the question of “What is affordable housing?” “How can it be achieved?” “What are the parameters and regulations around making housing affordable?”

“WORK LIVE Ideas for initial concept design: Affordable Housing Retail/ Commercial/ Design studio space on Ground level.

WORK LIVE COMMUNITY Work live: A mixed use place which introduces a commercial area where people can work in and also live above (in apartment/ affordable housing space) High density scheme: to accomodate the growing population and to meet the increasingly high demands of people wanting more supply to property. Embracing diverse community : cultural slant

In order to intertwine the relationship between architecture and context, I think it is important for the building to relate to its context in its exteriority (materiality, geometrical forms, relationship to landscape) and also within its interior (programme, functions, spatial characteristics). Buildings that will use its landscape as the context are ones of interest, as it gives architecture the opportunity to interact with its wider context and creates a seamless fluidity between architecture and its surrounding environment.

Taking certain aspects of fluidity from the landscape to create a form. Fluid movements like “uplifting the contour patterns and varying levels of height of the form, reflective of its landscape could be used to create a structure.

High density urban scheme will aim to meet demand of more housing supply. The idea of a mixed use space will mean that it is more convenient for people living within that area as they can do everything in one place.

“The shift here is not only experiential, but social as well. The qualities associated with public urban space- autonomy, freedom of association and assembly- are brought inside. Something of the programmatic openness of the landscape is reconstituted in a new architectural framework. In this context, nature itself can no longer be viewed as a pure exteriority. Instead, it can only be understood as part of our most intimate, everyday urban interior lndscapes.

A simple geometrical pattern to form an uplifting tower (to accomodate for urban density) and relationship to landscape as being uplifted from its ground roots.
