Momentary.

Context can be a permanent as a million year old rock or as intangible as a fleeting thought. Walking through Grey Lynn, I had a chance to hear fragments of conversations between locals. I believe our thoughts and ideas form much of the unseen context of an area. Oftentimes, a passing comment can be tremendously more revealing than any physical object in the environment. A few of the comments helped reveal conditions that would not have otherwise been as readily apparent. In particular, they exposed Grey Lynn as a privileged area, albeit one that is still very much appreciative of alternative and niche ideas.

“Did you go to the farmer’s market last week? I managed to get some pretty great stuff! Too bad about the fruit fly thing though.”

“You can’t be feeding your dog better than your kids... well you shouldn’t anyway”

“Look at that water, it almost looks like oil!”
