I grab a chopping board out of the cupboard. Setting it on the bench I take the asparagus and prosciutto we picked up from the market this morning out of the fridge. These get placed above
the chopping board side by side. I cut open the bunches of asparagus and trim each of the ends to a diagonal. Neatly lining up the asparagus as I go. Once this is done, I scrap down the
board into the bin and wash it before starting the second step. I take one of the asparagus and delicately wrap a slice of prosciutto around it beginning as the base of the head. When each is done I place them at one end of the chopping board in a neat line, to wait to be fried.
I feel hands on the small of my back and hips reaching to grasp me around my waist as Andrew attempts to sweep me up and spin me in a three sixty around the room.
“Stop, stop,” I wriggle my elbow into his chest “Now I’ve messed this one up. I’m going to have
to start it again.”
“It doesn’t even matter babe, it looks fine. Here move over and I will help.”
“No. You will mess them up worse than this one. Can you check that the water jugs are full and that the wine is in the fridge? Oh and would you mind doing these dishes for me?”
“The water is full and I put the wine in the fridge this morning. I’m just going to get your
laptop so we can play some music and then I will start the dishes.”
I can hear him come bopping back up the hall with Ain’t it Fun playing, he’s probably going
to try and name our first born after Hayley Williams. I hear him set the laptop down on the
table behind me. He waltzes up beside me swinging and bumping his hip into mine; wrapping
his arms around me from the side he bows his head to peck my check and jaw. I turn, allowing Andy to pin me against the bench. He kisses me long and deep. Closing my eyes I clutch the
moment. Jolting with the surprise of his swiftness. My eyes bulge and eyebrows reach into my hairline. I’m swung around and plunged into a back bending dip. He holds me there.
“Pull me back up, pull me back up!” I whine, giggling and clasping his arms.
He is so proud of the moves he manage to learn for our wedding he is constantly busting them out at the most inappropriate, inconvenient moments; Queen Street, the park, the foyer of my office you name it. I do love his radiant animation; it’s a refreshing from the pompous
corporates who tend to dominate our profession. You can’t help but smile when you are around him. I haven’t met a person that doesn’t love Andy and he gets along with everyone, from my grandparents to 5 year old cousins. Even Great Aunty Noelene clucked over him. Knock, knock, knock.
“Can you answer that, it will be Elisa and David, they’re always early.”

How will the space contribute to the environment at Queen Elizabeth Court The views provided will be unseen by the general public and tourists unless they have been up the sky tower recently. With the emphasis on native planting it will provide a tourist attraction and a local hangout for the public wanting to retract from the bustle of downtown. It will be a little nature retreat right in the heart of the city.
I watch my husband click away taking photo after photo. He has been going hard with the cannon SLR I bought him for Christmas the whole two weeks we have been here. I hate having my photo taken so as soon as I here that thing going off I am on edge, he must have taken so many awful photos of me by now. “Can’t you just put that thing away for a bit? You are ruining the serenity.” I beg of him. “I just want to document our whole trip so we can relive it and show all our friends back in Canada.” He tucks it away into the carry bag. “I know but you need to experience the place while you are here too. It’s not as good through a camera lens.” This place is amazing you would never know that you are at least twenty stories up in the middle of a city. It feels like you are in the middle of the bush surrounded by paddocks of sheep and cows. We walk along a dirt track with big old Kauri trees either side of us and smaller ferns and shrubs litter the ground. “Shh! Can you hear that bird?” I ask Ray “Yeah! That’s crazy, who would have thought, birds singing in the centre of a city.” “Could only happen in New Zealand, there are more sheep than people in this country.” “Do you think it’s a Kiwi??” Ray excitedly questions I snort, “Don’t be stupid they are nocturnal, and they are so rare that I doubt they would release any in here.” We pass another couple heading back in the opposite direction. “Hi,” they smile and nod as we cross paths in single file. The sound like they are from here so I stop and ask them if they know how big this place is. We have been walking for a while and its bizarre it could be much bigger considering the site. “You are pretty much there, the clearing and look out is just around the corner.” We follow the path a little bit longer and then it opens out into a big clearing, giving a three quarter view of the city. “Oh wow Heather, we didn’t need to pay to go up that Sky Tower thing yesterday. We should have just come here. The view over the city is basically the same, but you get a great scenic walk and it’s free.” There are lots of people sitting around on the decking, eating sandwiches and drinking from big Pump bottles, enjoying the nature retreat. “Go and stand over there so I can get a photo of you.” Offcourse Ray had whipped out the camera again. I go over to where he is pointing and stand near and Asian couple holding a camera out in front of them taking photos of themselves. I get vertigo looking down to the street below. You can just make out the last people hurrying to cross the street in a dash as the timer counts down until the lights go green. Someone offers to take a photo of Ray and I together. He hands them the camera and wraps his arm around my shoulder smiling. “Say cheese!”

How will the space contribute to the environment at Queen Elizabeth Court It will be able to support local and youth artists with competitions being held to select the piece to be housed, generating more public involvement and therefore interest. Occasionally it could host an international artist in order to further capture the public’s attention. By constantly changing the fabrication it will keep bringing people back.
I sit back against a block and watch the public move about, examining the handiwork of my installation. I have spent two days putting it up, roping in all my family and flatmates to cable tie the polystyrene cups into their lattices. I haven’t slept in thirty-six hours and I am beat. I could probably fall asleep right here right now but the exhilaration of observing the public responses is too good to miss. One person walks up to the organic and flowing column of cups. Reaching out, a little to timid to actually touch it they peer closer. “Are they polystyrene cups?” She turns to her friend. I get up off the ground to wander and mingle with the crowd. I answer any questions they might have and explain my concept to them. I am too drained to this activity but you never know whom you might bump into, and it would be ideal if I could get another commission out of it. “Hi, I’m glad that you like it. The cups are all cable tied together, the zip is at the back to give a more seamless effect.” “I would have thought that glue would have been better and cheaper.” “I prototyped with glue but you had to hold each cup in place until the glue dried and the structure was much more fragile too because the glue was really brittle.” “Huh cleaver!” Some fellow art students exclaim The children dance and weave in and out of the organic forms, excited by the technicolour strobing lights radiating from within to back light the sculptures. They point and exclaim with the different effects of the light programming. Nervous parents call after them. “Be careful.” “Come back here.” “Stay next to your father and I please.” More paranoid than me that their darlings will trip and fall, crushing the work. I am numb to it at the moment but I know that it would be devastating if it was destroyed on the opening night. I float over to the bar on the side to get a glass of bubbles. The room is the perfect display cabinet for my installation. The walls are pushed so far back that the piece stands alone and the ceiling is so far up that my canopy is the roof. With each installation the appearance of the entire space will be reformed. I wonder if it would fit the Telecom Christmas Tree, it would be the perfect place for it right in the centre of the city I speculate. “What was your inspiration for it?” One of my old tutors enquires. The voice snaps my wandering mind back to reality. “I was asked to reflect the attitude of Queen Elizabeth Court and the heart of the city so I really wanted to make something that was dynamic and full of movement even when it was perfectly stationery. The natural forms of the cup columns almost appear as if they are a freeze frame of a streamer twirling in the wind.” “Well you certainly achieved that. And how did you come up with the idea of using cups?” He probes for details. “I actually saw a canopy of them made for a car exhibition. I think it was BMW.”
The Ultimate Blank Canvas The Installation Space
-30 x 30 x 30 metre room -Room is entirely white. -One small door into the room with relocatabe stairs to ensure minimal blemishes in the room -Walls curve into the floor and ceiling so their are no joins between the two elements for photographing. -Allows sculptures to be viewed and documented in their most pure form -Skylight about allows specific installations to be viewed from the the skywalk and garden above.

How will the space contribute to the environment at Queen Elizabeth Court
It will provide a fun space that all sorts of people will want to come and see because it is different. It is an interactive place in the city so the public will come back to re-experience the fun. Being especially yet not totally aimed at children because everyone loves to play it offers amusement for children downtown, which the city lacks. Children are full of energy that will inturn liven the building
It’s one thirty in the afternoon on a Wednesday and the seven of us wander into the building. We have just handed in our final assignment for the semester, now we are free to enjoy the holidays. We navigate to the room with the massive trampolines in. It’s still school time so it is perfect because there is practically no one inside. We plonk down on the ground underneath the mat and sprawl out, opening our pizza boxes and bottles of coke. The greasy smell of this goodness will linger long after we leave. We spend the first ten minutes shovelling as much food and drink into our mouths as we can. Pausing briefly every so often to reminisce on the happenings of the year or to discuss holiday plans. Kyle and Matt are the first ones to take to the trampoline. They climb up the stairs and step tentatively onto the mat. I haven’t been here before so I am interested to see how it works. Glad to watch the boys on it before I attempt anything. It’s only a few seconds before they are bouncing confidently above us, punching the mat down into where we sit, yet they are still metres above us. “Guys you should come up here!” “It’s actually so much fun!” Their booming laughter exceeds the room’s capacity as they compete to see who can double bounce the other one higher. “What is the technique behind double bouncing?” I turn my attention back to the group. “You wait until the other person is bouncing really high and then as they come down you take a small heavy jump, slamming your feet into the mat. You need to both be landing your jumps at the same time.” Catherine answers my question, her hands flying all over the place in illustration as she talks. “Your kinetic energy get transferred into the other person so they bounce really high and you stay still so that the momentum is conserved.” Ryan turns it technical forcing us al to relive our days of high school physics. “I only ever managed to do it on accident to my sisters when we were little.” I continue. “You have to get the timing perfect.” Angela pipes in to join the conversation. “It must be so dangerous on those small little home trampolines because they are so tiny you could so easily go flying off” Catherine continues. “Yeah my sister broke her arm when she was accidently double bounced at our family friends one night. I think she landed in the springs!” I hardly used our trampoline at home because spiders nested in the spring and when you bounced they would come crawling out. I don’t admit this to the others though. “Lets go join Kyle and Matt. It should be safe enough to leave our stuff down here, we’ll be able to see any one that comes in.” Ryan announces. The two boys are doing flips now. I am still hesitant but I follow everyone up the stairs. “Oh my god! This is amazing!!” I am bouncing away and it is actually so much fun because it is so massive. There is no way you can go flying off this thing. “You better not double bounce me! I’m serious” I warn the boys.
Flying Higher The Trampoline
-Space contains two 16m diameter trampolines -Penumatic ring surrounding the trampoline mat provides the structure -Space undernath is open to create a courtyard space to play and rest between bouncing. It also offers an area where parents can observe children playing -Mat is accessed by slides and stairs concealed within the wall at each end -Spin on the popular childrens backyard toy for people of all ages to bounce on. -Organic, faceted moulded concrete structure of the room.

How will the space contribute to the environment at Queen Elizabeth Court The space will constantly house different events from different buskers during the day to the screening of movies at night. By holding events it will generate public interest and because they are changing constantly it will entice people to come back. Enabling busker’s supports local and youth musicians. This space provides entertainment for the entire family.
“Over here kids.” I spot a free patch on the ground. Zigzagging my way through the bunches of people stretched out on the ground munching potato chips and sipping coke from cans. I plop our chilly bag down shrug off my backpack to claim our territory. Stretching the tension out of my back, rolling my shoulders I wait for James and Charlotte to catch up with me. Their mother, my wife is in Melbourne on a conference for the weekend so I picked us up some dinner from the deli on my way home from the office and we trained into the city to watch the showing of James Bond at Queen Elizabeth Court. The kids join me and I get them to help me lay down the rug from my backpack. They scramble to unpack the chilly bag, excited and hungry for dinner. “I thought we’d have burritos. I picked up a few salads and some chicken as fillings. The wraps are in my back pack Charlotte” “Do we have any cheese Dad?” James digs around in all the pockets not wanting to forget anything. “Ooh no sorry. I totally forgot cheese. I think that Mediterranean one has feta in it though, if you like feta.” “It’s fine Dad.” Charlotte reassures on both their behalf, but I can see James is a bit disappointed. “Do we have any plastic cups for the OJ?” “Ah shit I forgot cups, we’ll just have to drink it from the bottle. I’m not as good at this as your mother. Sorry guys!” We take turns with each of the salads, passing them round, stuffing our wraps until we can hardly fold them closed. Taking it in turns to swig from the bottle of juice in between. “Charlotte, you better no backwash!” James warns A guy busks playing the guitar, singing ‘leaving on a jet plane’ a few metres in front of us. He looks about 20, probably trying to fund his way through uni or the night out on the town he has planed after this. He is has quite a husky voice, not bad though, but probably better on the guitar than he is at singing. I lean over and fish my wallet out if the front pocket of my backpack and pull out a fiver. “Charlotte, why don’t you go and put this in his case,” I hand the note over to her. Scanning the crowd as I munch on my wrap there are quite a few young couples on dates. You can tell which ones are first dates; they sit up a little to straight and the expressions on their faces are a little bit too forced. I spot the Grayson family a few metres behind us and wave out. “Thomas and his family are just back their if you want to go and say hi before the movie starts James.” Dum DeDe Dum The camera pans around the 21st Century Fox logo. Hush falls over the place. The busker silently clips his guitar case closed hunching over to make his unobtrusive exit as seamless as possible.

How will the space contribute to the environment at Queen Elizabeth Court It would target and range of ages because adults would want to come and see the installation and children are fascinated and love to play with water. Water has the ability to evoke a sense of serenity so it would provide a mellow and clam place in the city to escape and relax. It has the potential to involve rainwater and therefore sustainability. Light and music shows could play at set times of the day, which could be themed differently during the year. By holding a changing event it will generate more public speculation and keep them coming back to experience then new show.
Closing my eyes, allowing my head to slump back onto my shoulders. I bare my face to the moisture-laden air. Succumbing to the exhaustion I didn’t even realise I possessed until I sat down on the cool, glossy bench. My body fluctuates as the tides of my breathing roll in and out. The pattering of water droplets as they collide with the foiled surface, one after the other, occupies the expanse. It’s a symphony of serenity which crescendos into a cascading gush compelling you to let go. I surrender my limbs to the blissful paralysis of sleep. Utterly at peace I forget the three meetings I have after lunch and report, which needs writing before tomorrow. Gradually I come to. With one deep breath I raise my head upright. Anther deep breath and I peel my eyes open. With the third breath my eyes mosey, adjusting to take in the space. I reach into my handbag for the bottle of juice I picked up on the way here. Prudently unscrewing the cap I take a long swig, holding it in my mouth for just a second to allow my taste buds to absorb the sweet sugary flavour. Sluggishly I twist the cap back on the bottle and rummage around in my bag for the sandwiches I made before leaving the house this morning. Deliberate in the way I peal back the layers of glad wrap, to expose just the tip, the rest remaining cocooned to catch any fillings that slip. Nibbling down the sandwich I survey the people that surround me. I watch a young girl reach tentatively out. When her fingertips are millimetres from the jet she clenches her hand with a sudden, jerking movement trying to catch the spurt of water. Confusion strikes as her first punches through the water. She looks down with disappointment uncurling her hand to realise it contains nothing. My gaze settles on a small boy, may be three or four years old. He is here with is grandparents, they smile quietly in the background at is innocence. He peers down at the marble sized hole the water sprang from moments before. Getting down on his hands and knees he puts his eye right up to it. I pray that no water comes fountaining out. I don’t water to deal with crying kids, it’s my lunch break and I am trying to enjoy the peace. He kneels back up again to plug the hole with his finger. Nothing happens. Sitting back on his bum he stares with absolute bewilderment. An excited gasp as water shoots back out, the droplets rain down over him. He giggles as he sips and slides playing with the water, dipping his toes into the shallow film glazing the silvered surface. He tries to scoop it up, cupping it in his cap and running back to his grandparents. I stifle a chortle all my kids loved playing in the rain when they were little too. The alarm I set goes off and it is time to head back to the office.

How will the space contribute to the environment at Queen Elizabeth Court It provides an activity space for children. The city currently does not consider children at all, parents lives revolve around their children so in order to design a city for adults we need to cater for children as well. For the city to provide the same attractions as the suburb it needs to provide places that parents can bring their children. There are no playgrounds in downtown Auckland city presently so it would fill a niche, drawing in a lot of public.
Isaac jumps up the final three stairs, letting go of my hand. His run into the extensive and sweeping jungle gym is more of a waddle, his nappy cladded butt toing and froing behind him, swinging this way and that. He gains so much momentum that he trips over the size to big shoes that I bought for him to grow into. Nose diving into the cushiony floor he lands flat on his chest, stamping his imprint behind him. Expecting a crying outburst and a floodgate releasing of tears, I roll my eyes moving over to dust him off. Instead he lets out a chuckle hoisting himself up. He pauses a moment arms out stretched like an amateur surfer to maintain balance. He dashes off after one of the other older kids, arms outstretched like zombie trying to catch them. “You ok there little guy?” I catch up with him, kneeling down to tuck his shirt back in. “What do you want to play on? Can Mummy come too?” “Mmm…push…push…” His little voice pleads with his arms out stretched towards me. “You want to go on the swing Isaac?” I pick him up. Resting him on my hip I carry him over to the closest swing set and buckle him in. From behind I push him. He giggles and chortles, “hehehe hehe higher.” He falls quiet when he looks down, for him this five foot distance from the ground could be the top of the Sky Tower. “How old’s yours?” a young father straps his daughter into the next swing over. “Two and a half, you?” I courteously return the question. “Kimmy turned three last week didn’t you?” He fluffs her long dark hair as he moves around to the back for the swing to push her. “Is he your only child?” “No I’ve got one that’s just started school, dropping her off on her first day was almost more traumatic than the birthing of both of them combined so I’m not looking forward to it with this one. I’ve got a few more years yet though.” A young baby in a pram off to the side starts wailing. “I will never get used to that sound, it’s enough to bring on an immediate migraine. I guess I should have expected it though right? Who am I kidding it’s a playground, hello tear central.” I glance over at his hands checking for a ring. Playgrounds are the best place to meet single men my age because they don’t have issues with the baggage kids bring to a relationship. “Do you have any other little cuties?” I attempt to imitate a Marylin Monroe sexy, breathy voice. “My wife is over there with our youngest she is just six weeks but was a prem. baby and I just got them both back home last week from the hospital.” He nods over to the wailing baby his wife has taken out of the stroller, frantically attempting to nurse it into a calmer state. Oh god, I’ve insulted his baby and totally embarrassed myself in attempt to seduce a date out of him. “What say we try out the slides Issac?” I look for my escape route. “Nice to meet you. You sure your wife doesn’t need a hand? I can take them both on the slides of you want?” Feeling my face glowing red I pray he doesn’t take me up on the offer. I just want to get out of here.
It’s a Creative Attitude The Playground
-Playground does not contain the standardised, catalogue chosen, function specific equipment which dominates these spaces in schools and parks. -It is a vertical maze captured between two mesh screens to form the walls around the perimeter. -At the centre is a massive tensile net which hangs from the ceiling. -Suspended from the net are a series of balls on chains which are designed to be used as swings. -The playground encourages children to explore for themselves and create their own fun and games, as opposed the prescribed activity which occurs in the modern playground. -Encourages sensory engagement and development. Due to the irregularity of the playscape. Children have to be aware of the way they move through the equipment.
