CONTAGIOUS

THE CONTAMINATED ZONE

What if context was to go amiss? How would we cope and specifically how would an upper middle class suburb like Grey lynn cope. Presently the Queensland fruit fly is disruptive but relatively contained. Only the frequent appearance of the yellow bins meant for your discarded fruit waste, and the odd marker, trap and Hazmat suit give it away. Yet it is disruptive, those who could breeze through the super markets now have to stop to declare where they live. How serious could it be? Like the Fruit Fly, the painted apple moth was contained in west Auckland, which in a bid to control it used spraying in low flying aeroplanes. For 29 months following there where numerous complaints of illness they believed where associated with the spraying. It was released later that it contained chemicals that hadn’t been disclosed to the public. I propose an archaic future, one where our site and cox’s creek reserve has become the next site of a serious contamination that threatens humans. In a bid to contain it, it must be quarantined and architectural intervention put in place.

In the beginning we designed objects for production, designs to be turned into wood and steel, glass and brick or plastic- Then we produced neutral and usable designs, then finally negative utopia’s, forewarning images of the horrors which architecture was laying in store for us with its scientific methods of perpetuation of existing models.Superstudio 1973 exhibition
