SHANGHAI HOSTS ANOTHER ROUND IN THE TITLE FIGHT

T

he last-but-one round in the 2014 Maserati Trofeo World Series will be run at Shanghai. The meet could determine the destiny of the overall classification, one led by Swiss Team’s Mauro Calamia since the start of the season. Sitting on 131 points, Calamia showed signs of flagging in the recent US leg. Perhaps affected by nerves, he committed a few mistakes that saw him finish outside the points in two of the three races. Second in the standings is Riccardo Ragazzi on 87. He will be fired up in trying to close the overall gap after notching four straight wins in the last four 30-minute races. In third is Switzerland’s Gabriele Gardel but he is not in the title chase after opting to skip the events held outside Europe. Holding fourth on 81 points is another Italian, Alan Simoni; he is improving all the time and is

appearing on the back of a great second spot in the Virginia endurance event. With six races still to run, anything could happen. The on-track action will be even closer in this round as the European drivers will be flanked by the series of Asian-based competitors who usually enter the China event. They will be tough to beat and will be doing their best to grab a podium finish. The race format sees three races run at each round two 30-minute races and an endurance event of 60 minutes with a compulsory stop and driver change for crewed cars. To even things out between the drivers and make things more interesting, the five fastest drivers (determined by the results of races 1 and 2) will have to spend extra time in the pit lane during the pit stop. BACK IN THE DAYS 20 12

20 13

The Formula 1 circuit of Shanghai played host to the Maserati GranTurismo MC Trofeos for the first time in 2012. The track then hosted the final round of the season and saw Renaud Kuppens triumph. As well as claiming the Overall title, the Belgian secured the Team crown, the award for taking the most pole positions and the Trofeo Europa. Race 1 went to Riccardo Ragazzi with Kuppens edging Frenchman Ange Barde into third. The season’s last podium was topped by Giorgio Sernagiotto, with Alan Simoni second and Mathijs Bakker, from Holland, third.

In 2013 Shanghai hosted the penultimate round in a championship that was a straight fight between Renaud Kuppens and the Dane Mikkel Mac. Race 1 came down to a photo-finish with the win going to Cedric Sbirrazzuoli from Mac, Alberto Cola and Riccardo Ragazzi. Simoni made Race 2 his own with Mac again taking second and Kuppens third. The endurance event saw the two rivals swap positions with Ange Barde taking the chequered flag.

05. WELCOME TO CHINA

T

he Shanghai round in the Maserati Trofeo World Series is probably the one that attracts the biggest crowds. In the past two China meets, the Maseratis were the cars that attracted most admirers and its drivers were ones most fans wanted to track down. The autograph signing sessions, organised each year, prove very popular with fans queuing for a signed poster, postcard or photo together with a Maserati star. The stands that flank the main straight are also packed with spectators there to enjoy the Maserati Trofeo racing first hand. Wrapping things up is the Maserati hospitality zone. A refined and sumptuous space, the area attracts numerous clients and guests who take part in the events that, every year, the local dealership organises to mark the arrival of the championship. This year will be extra-special as Maserati is celebrating its Centennial.

Trofeo Racer, exclusive style

M

aserati continues its creation of limited-edition apparel with a windproof top and t-shirt. The range picks up from US where two exclusive Maserati Trofeo World Series t-shirts were produced for the event. Designed for the Chinese public, only 1,000 examples of the Maserati wear will be produced. The clothing will sport Maserati’s 2014 logo: the Trofeo Racer helmet.

BARTELS BACK TO WINNING WAYS IN A MASERATI THE CALAMIA-RAGAZZI DUEL CONTINUES IN THE US ACE 1: At the Virginia International Raceway, in the USA, Michael Bartels made a winning return to Maserati. The German was crowned World FIA GT1 champion in 2010, driving the MC12, and boasts a series of victories and titles in the FIA GT series. Here he got the better of the 23 enrolled crews thanks to his experience. Calamia, starting from pole, managed to hold onto his lead from Bartels and Riccardo Ragazzi; Ragazzi was super quick and had edged ahead of Tom Long and Alan Simoni. The safety car was called on halfway through the race to move Mark Turley’s car from a dangerous spot on the track. After ten minutes and with the track positions on pause, at the restart, the German was quick in snatching first place when he caught Mauro Calamia napping through turn one. Trying to hit back on the same lap, the Swiss driver ending up putting his wheels on the grass and lost control, slipping all the way down the pack. Though Calamia got his car going again he had to pull into the pits to give his mechanics a chance to repair the car; his chances were gone. Bartels went on to take the win from Riccardo Ragazzi, Tom Long (the first American to finish), Alan Simoni and Nick Mancuso. For the record, the points for finishing first went to Ragazzi as Bartels, a guest Maserati Trofeo driver, does not pick up any points. Towards the end Damon Ockey and Roberto Ranieri clashed with the Italian coming off worse, losing the bonnet of this GranTurismo MC Trofeo in the collision. RACE 2: Bartels laid down the marker for his one-two at turn one, right where he had overtaken Calamia earlier in the day. The German repeated the trick and assumed command in majestic style. Then, a few laps later, Calamia made the exact same error that had cost him dear in Race 1: he planted his wheels on the grass and ended up flying off the track. Again his race was compromised. It wasn’t long before the Swiss driver was forced to retire: his front end was too clogged up with dirt to allow enough air through to the engine. The section of track where Calamia threw in the towel later saw Giuseppe Fascicolo pull out following a collision with Turley. Simoni caught a glimpse of the podium when he overtook McQuarrie but he then lost control, ending up way off the track. Luckily, Simoni was able

to continue but his podium shot was gone; he came home fourth. The final race order read: Bartels, Ragazzi, McQuarrie. Nothing much happened from there on in apart from Bartels confusing the white flag (to signal the last lap) for the chequered flag. This error saw Ragazzi overtake but then the Italian’s sportsmanship came into play as he moved aside to give Bartels a deserved victory. In fifth came Andreas Segler as he claimed his highest ever finish in Maserati’s single-make series. Just behind him across the line came Lino Curti only for the officials to disqualify him. The penalty was handed out as Curti had failed to pit and fix his air scoop, despite being shown the black and orange flag. Race 2 was also marked by another closing clash when Taggart and Cordoni came together; the Italian had to abandon with a broken suspension. RACE 3: At the start of Race 3, Bartels wasted no time in profiting from Calamia’s indecision to take the lead. This time the Swiss man bided his time until the pit stop, counting on the 20-second handicap Bartels had to work off. On lap four, Segler strayed off the track when attempting to avoid clashing with Shovlin; he lost time and a number of places. When the pit stop window opened, Bartels was being chased by Calamia, Simoni, Ragazzi, Byrne and Mancuso with Long, Turley and Fascicolo tussling for seventh. After the round of stops, the lead positions had a new look: Calamia was now in control ahead of Simoni, Mancuso, McQuarrie, Bartels, Ragazzi, and Fascicolo. Things stayed unchanged until the end when Mancuso was overtaken by McQuarrrie and Bartels. So, Calamia made up for the mistakes he made the day before. Simoni finished second and the Byrne/McQuarrie crew third. In fourth came Bartels with Mancuso taking fifth after a fine comeback from tenth on the grid. Ragazzi crossed the line sixth and Giuseppe Fascicolo seventh, after battling Mark Turley (11th) from start to finish. Another driver putting in a remarkable turn of pace was Michael Cullen in finishing eighth from twentieth at the start. Thanks to this win, Calamia has put a stop to Ragazzi’s run of points. Even so, Calamia’s rival is in fine form and now lies second overall. On this occasion, they both got a equal share of the pie at 28 points each. The Swiss driver now has a 44-point lead with two rounds to go.

#SENSINGSPEED

D

uring the #MaseratiTrofeo US weekend, a new digital media project made its debut. An innovative technology was launched to ’sense’ the #MaseratiTrofeo experience from a completely new angle, allowing visitors of the Maseraticorse site (http://sensingspeed.maseraticorse.com) to live the excitement of the circuit in real time. Thanks to an exclusive custom tracking technology the #SensingSpeed console provided a set of real-time parameters: track position, speed, the audio level of the unique Maserati sound inside the car and the driver’s heart rate. The combination of all these parameters created the “adrenaline index” of selected drivers, also comparing the results drivers after the races. During the weekend, it was possible to keep tabs on Nick Mancuso, Damon Ockey and the Jim Taggart/ Tom Long and Patrick Byrne/Tyler McQuarrie crews, but Nick Mancuso and his Maserati played the starring role for the last #MaseratiTrofeo US endurance race. #SensingSpeed platform is in continuous development and it will be featured also on Shanghai and Abu Dhabi Maserati Trofeo Rounds. To learn more about the project visit www.maseraticorse.com website.

THE MASERATI TROFEO RACING ACADEMY

T

he Maserati Trofeo Racing Academy is the maximum expression of the Maserati driving courses. It’s a professional programme that prepares drivers for comptetion ending in the possibility to enter the Maserati Trofeo, with the adequate performance and safety. There are two available categories. Experts: for drivers who already compete at various levels and have some knowledge of the dynamic as of a GT race car. Included in this group are those drivers who have attended the Master Maserati driving courses. The second category is Beginners, for the participants who have never raced or taken any sports driving courses but who want to gain experience of the world of Maserati racing. Those who enroll should have at least some driving experience on high performance road-going cars. The course is based on 2 days and includes theory sessions and dynamic sessions. The theory sessions have the aim to prepare entrants for all aspects of a race as driving technique, vehicle dynamics, regulations, precautions to take after accidents, overtaking, tyres. In the dynamic sessions the programme is based on chrono sessions on the track, integrated with personalized telemetry analysis, which allow participants to gradually improve their technical ability by becoming more familiar with the car and learning to sense its dynamic limits. The Maserati trofeo Racing Academy can be improved with a specific test that allows drivers to race with cars over 2.000 cc, as required by the FIA for competing in the Maserati Trofeo. The cars used for the courses is the Maserati GranTurismo MC Trofeo which is the actual used on track by drivers of the Maserati Trofeo. The cars used for the course are the Maserati GranTurismo MC Trofeo fitted with driver and passenger seats, a two-way communication system and telemetry. The car is the same used on track by drivers of the Maserati Trofeo. Next Maserati Trofeo

Racing Academy will be organized for 2015 and news about programs and costs will be at disposal before the end of Maserati Trofeo 2014. For more information please contact TrofeoMaserati@maserati.com or visit www.maseraticorse.com in the news page.

PRESSCONFERENCE .02

RACE 1

Riccardo Ragazzi

.01

“I came second but got the points for a win as Michael Bartels is a guest and so doesn’t earn any points. I was lucky today: Calamia’s mistake allowed me to claim more points and close the gap overall”.

Michael Bartels “It is like coming back home for me: Maserati is my family. Winning after two years away from competition is incredible. I overtook Calamia at the safety car restart and I made the most of the opportunity. My experience counted in taking first place. Then Calamia made a mistake and I focused on not taking any risks and seeing out the race”.

.03

Tom Long “ It was exciting as VIR is my ‘home’ circuit. I enjoyed driving the Maserati GranTurismo MC Trofeo in a tough and competitive championship. Making the podium is a good result”.

.01

RACE 2

Michael Bartels

.03

“This second win was easily more difficult than the first: the conditions were not good with low visibility as dusk closed in. Despite the last lap scare I managed to secure a one-two thanks to Ragazzi’s sportsmanship”.

Tyler McQuarrie

.02

“EIt was a hard-fought race where it was risky driving on the grass. Lots of drivers found it tough. I am pleased to have finished on the podium”.

Riccardo Ragazzi “Bartels was great off the start and picked the right spot to move into the lead. I managed to overtake McQuarrie, making the most of his error and then Calamia went onto the grass and off”.

.01

Mauro Calamia

.03

RACE 3

Patrick Byrne

““It was an up and down weekend: it began very well when I set the two best times in qualifying but I then made two mistakes that compromised Races 1 and 3. It is disappointing because it put paid to all the team’s hard work. Fortunately I made up for these two mishaps in the endurance event where I had the advantage of not having to spend extra time in the pits”.

“It was all down to fine teamwork: even the mechanics helped out. I am happy at this significant result and I would like to congratulate my friend Tyler who made the podium twice”.

TylerMcQuarrie

.02

“Good way to end the weekend on the #maserati podium with Patrick Byrne! He did an awesome job on the opening stint running fast times and I finished out the race and got us up to 3rd. I also got the fastest lap of the race on the last lap chasing down 2nd place. Just needed 1 more lap...”.

Alan Simoni “I made the podium for the first time at Spa and, since then, I have suffered. Now I have finally managed to secure a decent result. I never imagined coming second as I had to work off extra time in the pits. The tempo was really high and I continued to push right until the final turn; I had to hold off Tyler McQuarrie as he was trying to get past me over the closing laps”.
