Hi all, As I sit here writing this, most of you will still be on holiday. That being said by the time I print this, and distribute it you will be back from holiday, kids back to school and the summer well and truly behind us; which is why it is good to take some time and reflect on the summer we had in Kingston. Kingston offered a cracking summer with so many events. I would like to thank and congratulate firstly everyone who put together and organised every event! • IYAF - whose efforts provided us with over 300 acts in just 3 weeks • Kingston Regatta - a big thank you goes to CNM Estates for the excellent lunch. A personal thank you goes to EVERYONE who was party of the Love Kingston Dragon Boat, and to the Rotary Club for organising the whole day! Congratulations on raising over £50,000 • Did you visit the Fodo festival ? – How well was that run? – A job well done by Frank and his team! • On top of all this there was the Kingston Aviation Exhibition • Kingston Tour Guides • Canbury Bandstand Concerts All in all a very proud summer for everyone involved, but just as we think the fun was over…. • The Kingston Carnival and the • Teddington River Festival crowned everything off nicely Yes indeed, Kingston was a cracking place to be in the Summer! I would like to take this opportunity to wish the guys at The Cardinal Pub on Tudor Drive all the best and good luck with everything they have planned. I have spent a couple of my late summer evenings there, having a “few refreshments” and the team are very welcoming and warm. So if you are thinking of visiting somewhere new, I can personally recommend this venue (see page 31). One more note – Please check out the Great Slimathon on page 20. We are hoping to raise more than £20,000 for Love Kingston. Catch you soon

COMMUNITY SECTION
Shiraz has a long and varied history of community engagement work with people from many different walks of life, cultures and religions. His interest in community work began after a period of paralysis which left him totally paralysed for months, brought about through a neurological virus, which prematurely ended his career in the defence industry. It was during his period of rehabilitation that Shiraz began to foster new links with his local community. In recent years, Shiraz has forged formal ties with a considerable breadth of local organisations such as the Shooting Stars Children’s Hospice, ROYAD (a charity that supports young people with learning disabilities) and a local Carers Network. At present he is a Governor of Kingston College, a Patron of Hillcroft the residential College for women, a founding Patron for Love Kingston Charity and Chair of Sir Francis Barker management committee. Shiraz has opened two successful community halls which host a range of social, business and training activities to encourage community cohesion.
This month’s Community Person: Shiraz Mirza
Since 1998, Shiraz has served as a Councillor for the Royal Borough of Kingston, representing the Chessington South Ward. In 2000, he became the first Asian mayor to hold this position. Shiraz went on to become mayor again in 2007 and deputy mayor in 2009.
It was whilst serving in the capacity of mayor of the Royal Borough for a second time, that Shiraz along with the help and funds of local residents was able to mastermind a project in his native Lahore to help patients suffering with mental health illnesses. This was appropriately named “Royal Kingston Rehabilitation Centre” Lahore Pakistan.
cohesion to build links with minority and hard-to-reach groups across Surrey. Shiraz’s wider aim in this role is to ensure the pillars of equality and diversity remain upstanding.
Councillor Shiraz Mirza Chessington South Ward
More recently Councillor Shiraz Mirza was appointed Assistant Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey. Once again he has built upon his expertise of community

POLICE ADVICE REPORTING A CRIME Billy was walking across the local footbridge over the A3 with two of his school friends. They were all busy checking out Billy’s new mobile phone that he got for his birthday from his dad. They didn’t notice the four older boys approaching them until they blocked their path. “What you got there kid?” said the spokesman of the group “Nothing” replied Billy, as the group surrounded them They loomed over Billy and his friends in a very menacing way threatening them with their physical presence and their speech. Needless to say, Billy lost his phone that day and told his dad that he couldn’t remember where or when. He never reported it because he didn’t want to admit he’d been bullied out of it. Why should I report crime? By sharing information you have about a crime that has been or may be committed, you can help the police solve crimes and prevent future crimes from taking place. The MPS understands that it may be difficult to report an incident, but we encourage you to do so and we will listen, give guidance and support whilst treating you with dignity and respect. If you have been involved in a serious or sensitive crime, we have specially trained staff who will understand your needs and look after any of your concerns (you can read more about this below).
• Very little chance that the offender will be caught or brought to justice • More people who may suffer what you’ve been through • No clear picture of crime across London, making it harder for us to deal with future problems For every crime reported the Metropolitan Police Service, we can assure you that we will: • Carry out an investigation, looking at the details of the crime including any potential evidence • Examine to see if it is linked to other crimes. If so, then the local police may direct extra resources to the area to prevent other people from becoming victims of crime • Log any property involved, which will be returned to you if recovered • Give you the opportunity to talk through your concerns about what happened and to receive reassurance • Refer you to Victim Support, a charity who can help you cope with both the emotional and practical impact of crime No matter how big or small you think a crime might be, crime is still crime and talking about it helps your community become a safer and happier place to live. Wow.... We’re in September. I’m really starting to panic as it’s next month that we’re off to Cuba. October 10th to be precise. It’s getting closer and closer and I should be getting fitter and fitter and getting out on my bike more and more, but I’m not.
NATALIE CYCLES CUBA
Why am I not? Well there has been a slight hiccup for myself is I have pulled some ligaments/tendons in my right wrist. I currently am rocking a splint which is prohibiting me from doing quite a lot of things. I can’t row, play tennis, lift weights, carry anything, or CYCLE! Help! So, I can’t cycle at the moment.... it’s so frustrating and as I write this it has only been 1 out of the 6 weeks I have to keep it on. The only cycling I can do is on a static bike and trust me- I’m on it!! Putting the programmes on hard steep hills and really pushing it until my legs feel like they’re going to fall off. I’m quite lucky too that we have a spinning machine at home which is helpful as it’s next to the sofa so I can climb a few hills whilst watching the latest episode of EastEnders or Dragons Den! I am still running and seeing my PT twice a week and we are really pushing all the lunges and squats as that’s all I can do, so hopefully, the fact that I can’t actually cycle shouldn’t be holding me back too much. I am really missing going out on my bike but at the end of September I am joining some of the ladies I met whilst cycling across Kenya, on a lovely 2 day ride in Sulcombe, Devon. I’ve been told that it’s really hilly and that my legs will be dead by the end of it, but it will probably be the last big bit of cycling practice I’m going to be able to get in before we head off to Cuba. And why am I doing all this? I’m raising as much awareness and money as I can to support 3 women’s cancer charities. Jo’s Cervical Trust, Breast Cancer Care & Ovarian Cancer Action. I’m not far off my minimum fund raising target. I do still need your support though so please put your hand in your pocket and help me. Every bit of your money 11
goes to the charities as I have paid for my own flights to Cuba myself. These charities need our help to raise more awareness and funds. The more people who know what to look for and how to spot for the early signs, the more lives are saved. Which is why in back issues of Omni magazines, I haven’t been asking for money but printing information about what to look for. If just one person reading my page gets the help they need early and beats their cancer then I’ve succeeded! Women V Cancer/ Action for Charity organise a large variety of different events that you can take up yourselves including other cycling events in the UK and across the globe or walking challenges, including the 3 peaks. There is even a challenge to trek and track the mountain gorillas of Uganda! Have a look if you too are interested in helping raise awareness and fighting cancer through your own challenge: www.actionforcharity.co.uk If you wish to show your support to any of these Women’s Cancer Charities please text ‘Cuba69 £5’ to 70070 to donate £5 or visit my web page: www.justgiving.com/nataliecyclescuba Thank you all again for your continued support. HISTORY SECTION
Have you ever wondered? Kingston and the Saxons? You may have read about Kingston’s Saxon past in the last edition of Omni Local. This history was brought to life at the end of June for children from three local primary schools as part of a Heritage Project. Kingston Tour Guide, Carole McGrath, acted as the Town Crier leading round each of the school parties to show them the key historical sites, and on their journey through the town they came upon King Athelstan by the Coronation Stone. They were also taken by surprise by the notorious highwayman, Jerry Abershaw. Abershaw was born in Kingston, and started his life of crime at the age of seventeen, leading a gang based at the Bald Faced Stag Inn which was for many years the terror of the roads between London, Kingston, and Wimbledon. All efforts to bring Abershaw
On 3 August 1795, Abershaw was hanged on Kennington Common (aged only 23!) and his body was afterwards set on a gallows on Putney Common - the last hanged highwayman’s body to be displayed in this way! More of Kingston’s history will appear each month in Omni Local, but, if you would like to discover more as you walk around our town, why not join one of our tours, led by specially trained volunteers? These meet in the market place outside the church gates at 2.30pm every Sunday in summer and on every first Sunday of the month from October to March. The charge is £4 per adult - or perhaps you might to arrange a special tour for you and your friends. For further information please ring 020 8399 0160 or 020 8399 7888.
to justice proved futile for quite a while, but in January 1795 he shot dead one of the constables sent to arrest him in Southwark, and attempted to shoot another. He was eventually arrested at the pub, The Three Brewers, in Southwark. For his crimes he was brought to trial at the Surrey assizes in July of the same year. Although a legal flaw in the indictment invalidated the case of murder against him, he was convicted and sentenced to death on the second charge of felonious shooting.
OR … you might like to become a guide yourself! If so, we are running a course next year starting on 16 January; for further details please look at our website www.kingstontourguides.org.uk 13

DĂŠcor for the Home Choosing Decorative Rugs Do you favour carpet, tiles or wooden flooring? All three offer something different and have positive and negative value.
HOME SECTION
For instance, carpet is luxurious underfoot and warm to walk on. However, depending on the quality and material of the carpet, it can wear out and look grubby with high usage. It can also house dust mites and needs regular vacuuming. Carpet cleaning can be a costly exercise and stains can be difficult to remove unless strong chemicals are used. This can ruin the pile of the carpet and harm the atmosphere. Tiles come in various materials and are hygienic and easy to clean. Depending on the type, they can be durable and are the better choice if you have animals. However, they can be cold underfoot. Also if hard objects are dropped on them, both can break. Wooden flooring is very popular and there is a large range to choose from. It is warmer underfoot than tiles. Laminate flooring is very affordable and relatively easy to lay. Parquet flooring is durable but expensive. Solid wood flooring looks better than laminate flooring but again is much more expensive. With all wooden flooring it is affected by moisture and temperature changes and can be damaged and scratched. So could the answer to all three be decorative rugs? A highly decorative rug placed on plain carpeting can bring life and colour to an area, and if put in the areas of high usage can protect the carpet. They are cheaper to clean due to their size and can be changed more frequently according to your taste.
Colour and Pattern
A non-slip rug placed on tiling brings warmth in areas where seating and relaxation is required. They also work well at entrance areas where shoes mark tiles.
Colour is important and if used wisely can create positive energy for the areas you are seated in. For instance, a red rug in a magnolia room will give focus and energise the space; the bolder the surrounding colours, the more pastel the rug should be.
To protect your wooden flooring, again a wellplaced rug can both contrast and brighten up certain areas bringing depth and structure to rooms.
If you prefer the minimalist look, balance the room with patterned rugs that match colour features such as pictures, ornaments or cushions.

Lawns Lawns Need Love After a summer of hard wear and periods of hot dry weather, your precious lawn deserves a helping hand so that it can recover this autumn. Here are a few tips on how to prepare your lawn for the winter and make sure it is thick and healthy for a really green start next spring.
GARDENING SECTION Supplied By Valerie McBride-Munro of Auntie Planty
Keep the surface clear Remove fallen leaves often – don’t wait for the tree to drop its full payload before attacking the job. If you cannot face the task using a brush or rake, then why not use your lawn mower to lift the dead leaves for you; but a word to the wise, don’t forget to attach the collection box first! Pack these chopped leaves into a bin bag, tie the top, poke a few holes for air and leave for about a year – you will have made some glorious leafmould! Help the water penetrate Take a garden fork or other spiked instrument and drive it as far as you can into the soil – rock the handle back and forwards gently which will help to make the holes larger. Your lawn may look rather unsightly for a day or two, but I promise this will pass! These holes will allow rain and air to penetrate more deeply, and at the same time relieve any compaction. Feed the Lawn This is the last month in the gardening calendar that you should do this. Feeding a lawn any later in the year will make it produce too much ‘soft’ growth, which will then be vulnerable during any snows and heavy frosts. Any good garden centre will be able to offer you a range of products to choose from, but do read and follow the label instructions carefully. Repair bare patches
layer of moist multi-purpose compost. Water regularly, with a fine spray.
Whatever the cause, re-seeding these bald patches during the autumn may be the best remedy. Rake the surface of the patch with a garden fork to fluff the soil, and water with a fine spray. Scatter grass seed evenly over the area and then walk gently over it to make a good connection with the soil. Then cover with a thin

Beautiful Nails Do you have beautiful nails? Are they your own? Do you have trouble growing your natural nails and maintaining them? Are they strong?
HEALTH AND BEAUTY SECTION
All these questions can be answered by a quick search of Google with several and varying tips on how to have the perfect nails. Whether it is soaking your nails in lemon juice, rubbing olive oil into them, putting hair moisturiser on them, going to a professional, treating the cuticle etc. you will never be short of advice from those with beautiful, strong nails. However, if you suffer from weak, thin nails that seem to break by just looking at a corner of a plastic package, let alone try and open it, it’s difficult to strengthen your already deficient tissue. You could try supplements or nutrients, and as long as you are not allergic to nuts - almonds and brazil nuts – do wonders for the hair and nails in terms of growth naturally. If you choose artificial nails, then there is a range to choose from. Gel, acrylic, and silk nails are widely used. Most people choose gels or acrylics when they’re committing for a longer time. Silks are most often used for a shorter time to strengthen nail tips or repair nail trauma, rather than making nails longer. Acrylics If you choose a professional nail technician to apply your acrylic nails, they will mix a liquid with a powder and brush the mixture onto your nails. They’ll usually cover your entire nail, though sometimes they’ll just add tips or a flexible form that they can sculpt to extend your nails. The product hardens as it is exposed to the air. You may notice a strong odour during the application process, but it isn’t harmful, provided the room has good ventilation. Over time, acrylics grow out with your nails, but you can have your nails filled in when they do. Your technician will gently file down the acrylic edge closest to your nail bed, then fill in the empty area between your nail bed and the existing acrylic nail. 19
Gels Gels are brushed onto your nails, nail tips, or nail appliqués to extend length. After your nail technician applies each coat, you must put your nails under ultraviolet (UV) light for up to two minutes to “cure” or harden the product. There is no odour during the application process. Like acrylics, gels grow out with your nails and need to be filled in every two to three weeks. Your technician will gently file down the gel edge closest to your nail bed, and then fill in the empty area between your nail bed and the existing gel nail. Whichever you choose, there is no doubt that beautiful nails get noticed. Today’s High Streets are full of professional salons that can advise and offer wonderful treatments and Kingston boasts its full share of them.

The Thames Riverside We have had a wonderful summer with glorious sunshine and soaring temperatures. I’m no weather forecaster, so will September prove to be a fitting end to summer easing us nicely into Autumn?
PLACES TO GO SECTION
Well, one thing’s for sure, the children will be going back to school, and we should all be vibrant and full of energy following such long spells of healthy sunshine. If September’s weather is gentle with us, it’s not too late to enjoy Kingston Thames Riverside. Kingston has almost three miles of one of the most attractive stretches of the River Thames. The attractions, on and off the water, remain undiminished. There are pubs and restaurants along the riverside, and if you have never
experienced a boat trip, they still run through September. If being on a boat is not your style, the wide riverside pathway ensures a pleasant walk.

The new owners of The Cardinal on Tudor Drive in Kingston are really excited to have taken over the lease on the pub. Since collecting the keys mid July and officially launching mid September, the pub has undergone redecoration, rebranding, a new fit out with luxurious curtains, lead crystal chandeliers, leather sofas, large solid oak tables (seating up to 10 people) and French gilt mirrors - and a new menu has been introduced.
Shabby chic meets American diner in Kingston!
The ‘main man’ and award-winning London restaurateur, Kelvin Macdonald, has turned the focus onto quality food at reasonable prices, served in a friendly and relaxed environment. The menu has been designed to be consistent in the way it is cooked and delivered – the owners strive for every experience to be a great one! The menu consists of authentic stonebaked pizzas (hand-made on the premises), the finest quality burgers made from chuck beef or grilled chicken fillet and roasted Mediterranean vegetables and bean burgers, served with a choice of 5 fabulous toppings. The pub is familyfriendly with children’s menu and high chairs. Keeping in touch with the local community and working with local charities and schools will always be a priority. The Cardinal’s loyalty scheme for regular diners offers on-going discounts on food (up to 25%). The loyalty scheme gives the pub a chance to keep locals up to date on the latest plans, events and promotions. The scheme innovatively uses personal bar codes, offering the choice of receiving it by email or on a plastic card; the card-free option gives diners the ability to scan their personal code on their phone rather than having another card in their wallet. The new Cardinal pub is only just beginning its journey. The new owners feel strongly about the environment and pledge to minimise waste as much as possible. As soon as the pub has permission, food will be delivered to the local area KT2 5, KT2 6 and TW10 7 - on bicycles. Plans are in place for fresh juices and milkshakes, a newly landscaped 31
garden (ready in the Spring) and 5 or 6 new bedrooms upstairs to provide bed and breakfast to the area. The new owners would like to thank everyone who has supported them in these first few months. They are open to ideas and are keen to continually improve, so welcome any feedback! OMNILOCAL OFFER 25% OFF FOOD ONLY, for early dining in October and November. Simply pay your bill before 7pm! The Call
Rated 15 - 94mins This film is predictable. It’s the perfect midweek date night film, so book a table at your favourite pizzeria and have a nice night out watching this flick. Jordan Turner (Halle Berry), is a senior LAPD 911 operator who receives a call from a young girl called Leah Templeton, who is in fear of her life when an intruder breaks into her home. Jordan advises Leah to find a hiding spot, but the phone call gets cut off. Jordan becomes desperate for the young girl’s safety and calls back, which is a chilling mistake as it gives Leah’s hiding place away. When the phone is finally answered it’s the voice of the intruder. No matter what she does to stop him, his only answer is “it’s too late”. After confirmation that Leah is dead across the nationwide media, Jordan breaks down and gives up taking calls on 911. Fast forward six months later, and Jordan is now a trainer to 911 operators. Whilst on duty, one of her rookies takes a call from a young girl called Casey (Abigail Breslin), who has been abducted and is in the boot of a man’s car. As the horror unfolds the rookie doesn’t have the experience to deal with the situation and hands the call over to Jordan, who uses all of her experience to try and help Casey escape. Despite all of her quick thinking and efforts the kidnapper escapes capture. Jordan now dedicates every breath she takes to find this cold-blooded killer, and bring him to justice and hopefully save Casey’s life.

Pre Winter clean driveway Does your concrete driveway need some attention before the onslaught of winter? There is no doubt that a decorative concrete driveway is low maintenance and durable as well as practical. However, no driveway paving material, including concrete, is truly maintenance-free. To ensure your driveway serves its purpose and maintains its appearance for many years, it is necessary to give it some attention before the weather and temperatures change with the seasons, so here are some tips for preserving the life and appearance of your driveway :-
DIY SECTION Pressure-washing
Cleaning and re-applying sealer The cleaner you keep your driveway, the more likely you are to notice the need for re-sealing any cracks that appear. Cleaning and re-sealing is dependent on weather conditions and traffic it receives. As a general rule, you should re-seal the concrete every two years or when it begins to show wear and tear. Re-sealing can be done yourself and you can obtain a good commercial one from concrete material suppliers or reputable hardware stores. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. Remove stains immediately It is wise to remove oil and grease stains as soon as you spot them. Pressure-washing is very effective on concrete. However, for stubborn stains, you may need to use an effective cleaning chemical. This is another reason to re-seal your concrete driveway because it will help protect it from stain absorption. De-icing chemicals De-icing chemicals should be avoided on your concrete driveway because they can cause surface damage such as scaling and spalling by thawing and refreezing moisture. Products containing ammonium nitrates and ammonium sulphates are especially harmful because they will actually attack the concrete chemically. Rock salt (sodium chloride) or calcium chloride will do less damage, but they can harm vegetation and corrode metal. 37
It is advisable to avoid all chemicals the first winter after your driveway has been laid, as new concrete is susceptible to salt erosion. It is far better to use sand on ice and snow for traction. Summary Concrete is one of the most durable paving materials for driveways, but the residential concrete is not designed for heavy vehicles. If you have invested hard-earned money into having a decorative concrete pathway laid, treat it with care, maintain it and it will serve you for many years.

What are the advantages of supporting local trades and businesses in your area? Here are some reasons to support local trades: 1. Prosperity & character – keeping business local gives entire towns more character and individualism. It also grows the local economy and the more local businesses there are, the more prosperous the town. 2. Community spirit – local business owners work together to build strong communities and vibrancy to towns. 3. Decision-making – keeping local means that decisions that affect towns are made by the people who actually live there and have the best interests of that community. 4. Local economy – local businesses plough a lot of their revenue back into the community. 5. .Jobs and wages – create more local jobs and in some sectors can offer better wages than chain stores. 6. Public benefits & costs – Local communities have little infrastructure compared to big chain stores which keeps the local economy more prosperous. They also make better use of public services.
LOCAL TRADES SECTION Omni Local is proud of all our local businesses! And we are committed to supporting economic prosperity and keeping it LOCAL. 7. Environmental Benefits – Local shops encourage pedestrians and shoppers within walkable distance, creating less pollution through traffic use. 8. Competition – Local stores can compete with each other which keeps the prices competitive and encourages innovative, creative thinking, compared to large stores who can slash prices due to volume and bulk buying. 9. Product Diversity – With innovative local business traders, there will be much more choice and creative design. Here in Kingston, it is a vibrant, bustling town with so much diversity and local events, it truly is a gem of the Thames!

B2B SECTION
When would you need a private company share valuation? 1. Buying or selling an interest in a private company - A professional valuation bridges the aspirations of the seller with those of the buyer and so enables a deal to be struck in the minimum amount of time.
Supplied by David Cane of SUNDIAL TAX & FINANCE LTD
2. Estate planning and inheritance tax calculation - Knowing the rules on company valuations for tax purposes ensures that the estate pays no more tax than it needs. 3. “Life of another” insurance cover - To provide funds to pay for the shares held by the estate of a deceased director/shareholder, an insurance policy, with a professional valuation of the company shareholdings, is needed. 4. Divorce settlements - Where either or both spouses own shares in a private company, a professional valuation of the shareholdings enables the parties to agree and move on in the minimum amount of time.
