COMMUNITY PEOPLE SECTION
Helen, and colleague Elaine, are voluntary energy healers. Together they run a wonderful voluntary healing centre in Kingston. Their work has helped so many and as they are volunteers and a local charity, we at Omni Local want to spread awareness of these wonderful ladies and what they do for our community. Helen – “I have been healing for 9 years and among other hats I wear, I am a mother, grandmother, barber shop singer, reiki therapist and shortly starting a course in bereavement counselling. I've always been involved in volunteering, even when my kids were young I was helping with meals on wheels. Since then I've tried charity shops, teaching English to foreigners, Bach Flower remedies, and medical reception work. Now retired, I've found my purpose in healing”. "Channelling healing energy can be wonderfully beneficial and I feel it a privilege to be part of a team that supports people through difficult times”. “Healing is 100% natural, gentle and non-invasive. Interview with the Mayor of Kingston
What is the Mayor's Charitable Trust? This is the charity “umbrella” under which the Mayor can raise funds for his/her nominated charities. This helps to raise awareness of the charities across the Borough and beyond, particularly as the Mayor raises funds for them through a series of fundraising events.
Why did you choose these three? The golden thread that brings together all three is that each one involves caring. Yorda cares for the young disabled. The Kingston Carers Network for the carers and the Community Brain for the community. I also recognised that in these harsh economic times, our ability to fundraise might be limited. So it was important that local people should benefit directly and that any monies raised should not go on expensive buildings or marketing but directly into working in our community.
Which Charities have you chosen to support? There are so many deserving charities and causes in Kingston that I would like to have supported. The final decision was very difficult to make. In the event I have selected three small local charities and yet each one provides a vital and distinctive service within the Royal Borough. These are: l Yorda Adventures: A Surbiton based group that provides after school activities and respite care for children with complex learning disabilities. As one mother said to me “the staff and volunteers at Yorda are the only ones who see beyond my child's disabilities and learn to know and understand him – I don't know where he or I would be without Yorda.” l The Kingston Carers Network: based in New Malden but it provides advice, therapies and support for local Kingston carers of all ages from 4 to 80 and beyond. They work to ensure that young carers do not miss out on school or social activities, organising events during holidays and after school to ensure they have the same opportunities as children who do not have their responsibilities for caring for family members. Similarly, support in many different forms seeks to ensure that older carers are neither isolated nor lose job opportunities and that their health and welfare are maintained.
How do you plan to raise funds? A number of events have already taken place and I am very grateful to those who have supported them and given their expertise to help. Forthcoming events include: l 18 January – Masks and Basques at the Rose Theatre. (Tickets available from the Rose Theatre) l 31 January – Dinner and Jazz at the Naturally Chinese restaurant in Surbiton. l 6 March – Dinner at the French Table in Maple Road. Four courses with matching wines. l 20 March – Fashion Show in the Guildhall. l 19 April – Mayor's Ball at Warren House.
l The Community Brain: Based in Surbiton it develops and strengthens local communities through a series of events, sporting, musical and historical - and all great fun! The Seething Wells “happenings” have been combined with projects in local schools, rediscovering and spreading awareness of local history and developing skills amongst individuals who did not previously know they had them. Where such community spirit exists I believe that both the disabled and carers, the elderly and the isolated are more likely to lead fuller and more rewarding lives.

It's 2013 already and no longer can I say that next year I will be cycling across Cuba to raise money for women's Cancer.... It's this year!!!!! I have less than ten months to get myself fit, healthy and prepared. That might sound a long time, but I know it will arrive quickly.

So what am I doing to get myself fit? You'd think the best thing to do would be to go out cycling as much as possible, but its sooooo cold and icy out there! Instead of freezing my fingers, toes and nose off, I will get myself fit in the gym. Increasing my stamina will be key, as we arrive in Cuba, we will be cycling for about 10 hours everyday over varying terrains, for 5 days! So for now, I am sticking to the weights, treadmill and cross trainer, with plenty of help from my personal trainer! I used to think I was quite fit, however one hour with Victor utterly exhausts me! I am quite nervous about cycling Cuba. I know it will be hard but it's all for a good cause - well, three good causes!!! Breast Cancer Care Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust Ovarian Cancer Action These charities are small but are helping women NOW by raising awareness. There are so many ladies fighting, they need support, advice and comfort to get them through this challenging time. Did you know that if caught early enough the survival rates of Ovarian Cancer can be as high as 90%? YES 90%! That is why I am cycling 400km across Cuba! I want to help raise awareness and funds to help the thousands of ladies currently fighting their battle with cancer. Please help me reach my target of £3,000. Every penny helps. POLICE NEWS DON'T BE A VICTIM Thieves see your possessions differently is the stark warning behind the Metropolitan Police Service's (MPS) new advertising campaign which launched in mid January to alert the public to the risk of street robbers. The advertising highlights the importance of taking steps to protect your phones, tablet devices, jewellery, cash and other valuables, and is timed to coincide with the start of the year when there is historically a rise in figures. When out and about on stag nights or at hen parties it is easy to forget in the fun of the moment the target that you can provide to would-be thieves. Mobile phones are especially attractive to thieves and we would urge everyone to consider the tips below to avoid becoming the victim of a phone theft : Ensure it's harder for thieves to get at your phone by making a habit of keeping it in a secure or zipped pocket. If you are getting out your phone out in the street, don't attract attention to it - try to avoid texting/checking it as you are walking along and be especially alert when taking it out as you emerge from public transport hubs - these are often hotspots. Keeping both hands on the phone and holding it on the side of your body away from the street can make it harder for thieves on pedal or motorbikes to snatch it from you. Never leave your phone unattended in a public place and don't leave it lying in front of you on a table as you could become prey to distraction theft. A lot of thefts occur in pubs, restaurants or concerts where the phone is left in handbags or unattended jackets Don't leave your phone in an unattended car - if you must, lock it out of sight. It only takes seconds for a thief to smash a window and steal it.

Planning your big day can be stressful, insanely crazy-mad but it can also be a lot of fun! One of the most important things you need to do is go through the planning together and make sure you can afford to pay for it. You can soon be brought back to earth with a huge bump when you receive the bills. Here are just some ideas on how you can cut a few corners and ensure you don't start married life in the red.

The Wedding Venue Ask yourself one question here. Do you really need a huge and fancy venue? Does it matter that King Henry III once sneezed in the dining room there? If you do find a great venue try and haggle. Would it be cheaper to get married at a different time of the year? Is it cheaper to book well in advance? Would it be cheaper if you paid in advance? Will they be able to offer any extras for free, or even cheaper than finding services elsewhere? If this means finding someone to supply the lining cheaper than the venue can supply, you go elsewhere or see if the venue will match the price.
Wedding on a budget (wedding tips)
Another question here is do you really need a venue? Could you use your house or garden, or a friend's? Could you use a local community hall? Often it is much cheaper getting married at the same place you want to hold your reception, however you can get married in one place and then travel to the reception if It's cheaper, this also adds to the anticipation of your guests. If you do want to have the reception at home, you won't have to worry about the bar being closed. You can also save money here as most venues charge more at the bar than most pubs. Visiting your local wine merchant or cash and carry outlet is much cheaper than some supermarkets. Food and catering services The question is how many tiers do you really need on the wedding cake? We are trying to save money here!

If you are going to have a DIY wedding, look at food you can cook in volume. Try and look at food you can prepare easy and well in advance. Speak to your friends and family and see if they can help out.
If you are going for a catered wedding, only go for 3 courses. Look at the different costs for each course, and limit how many bottles of wine you offer. Usually half a bottle per person is good enough. Some of the cost savings above are obvious, but making decisions on the following is the hard part: Wedding essentials! (Or are they?) Big Question – Do you really need that designer wedding dress? I know, it's a special day‌.But remember its just 1 day! Could you save money on materials? Could you get one off the peg? Could you see the romantic side and use a family heir loom? There are plenty of alteration tailors and dress makers out there. Failing all this, try and save money by shopping around online, or wait for the sales. You could even save money by looking around for closing down sales. Don't hire a wedding planner. You will have a reception full of people who will be more than happy help out. Make a list of friends who can help with various tasks. Other ways of keeping in budget is by asking friends and family for money. I know it's not romantic, but who needs a new food blender? These days most couples have everything and friends and families are often stuck when it comes to buying gifts. Most people have a wedding list. Why not include the champagne for the reception? Why not the deposit for your wedding dress? Or the hotel room for the night? Or if you think somebody will stump up for a honeymoon, why not put that on the wedding list! It's not penny pinching, its budgeting and making sure you don't start your new life in debt regretting spending all your hard earned money. So good luck, and I hope these tips have helped.

For any bride-to-be, the choice of a dress is at the top of the list. It takes up most of the budget and is one of the most important decisions when planning the big day. With so many of choices in every price range, finding the perfect wedding dress can be a stressful process. So making some decisions before you begin your quest will make things easier and even quite a pleasurable experience. Where to start? – Make sure you have a list of what you want including other items such as undergarments, shoes, jewellery, veil and/or hair ornaments then decide a budget and stick to it! Now you have a list, and how much money you can spend, make sure you know your personal style. There is no point in looking at sleeveless dresses if you are also worried about strapless dresses. Now you are halfway to knowing exactly what you want, and you can start eliminating the styles you are not interested in and only looking at those that will suit your pesonal style and are in your budget.
Wedding Dress for Success: Stay True to Your Personal Style Colour here is also important. If you don't suit white but still want a white dress, try having some colour where and when you can to contrast or break down the ghostly whiteness. There is also nothing that says a wedding dress has to be floor-length. Consider a more casual look with a tealength dress (one that falls a few inches above the ankle) or go even shorter. Every year, all over the world, lovers celebrate St. Valentine's Day with chocolates, cards and flowers. But why do we do this on St.Valentine's Day, and why is it in February? Well, this is thanks to the ancient Romans! There are three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, each one meeting the end of life in an unpleasant way. The most probable St. Valentine was a third-century priest in Rome. The Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage because in his mind single men made better soldiers. Valentinus felt that this was unfair, and rebelled by performing secret marriages for young lovers.When he was discovered,Valentinus was put to death. Legend has it, while Valentinus was on Roman death row, he fell in love with a young girl, who was rumoured to have been the daughter of his jailor. He wrote her love letters, which he signed, "From your Valentine," hence why we sign our cards in secret. We associate Valentine's Day on the 14th February to honor his death, but in fact the Romans celebrated love at this time of year long before Valentine passed away. This celebration was called Lupercalia, and marked the beginning of Spring, on February 15. Like most of the Roman festivals, Lupercalia is all about fertility. During this time, the single women would put their names in a big pot. Eligible men would draw a name at random, and that man would be coupled with the name of the woman for a whole year. Many ending in marriage. Moving into the Middle Ages, when Valentine's legend was of tales of romance and love, he became enormously popular, the day was further emphasized by being associated with the start of the birds' mating season, thus reinforcing February as the month of love. The earliest Valentine's poem today is dated 1415, which is believed to be written by a prisoner to his wife, and can be seen at the British library in London. Handmade Valentines letters and cards were being exchanged as early as the 1700's. We began exchanging premade cards around the mid-1800's. In today's modern time, around 85% of cards are purchased by women, with men buying gifts such as jewellery, flowers, chocolates and other romantic gifts a lot more than they do cards. It doesn't have to be costly to be romantic, just treat your loved one with respect, and even a simple poem would satisfy anyone who loves you. After all, love is wonderful, but at least once a year, we all need a little loving. Happy Valentine's Day.

Your bedroom: the key to a restful night's sleep Lighting: Humans were created to be in-synch with the sun cycle. For this reason, position your bed to the east so that you will be able to wake up seeing the sun rays peeking in around your curtains, or you can try several layers of curtains to block out light at night. Sheers and heavy protective curtains can help soften the room visually, help with sound absorption, insulate the window and are a great opportunity to bring in some colour and pattern into a lifeless room. Some electronics can provide artificial light to the room, so get rid of your phones, TVs and iPads while in bed. The artificial light will interrupt your sleep cycle and keep your brain activated, making it harder to get to sleep and keep you off the more natural sleep patterns.
Whether snuggling in for the night or just trying to catch a few winks, your environment plays an important role in determining if you're counting sheep or counting Zzzs. From noise reduction to lighting, there are a few easy ways you can turn your bedroom into a tranquil oasis. It's a fact that a third of the adult population suffers from insomnia from time to time, but only about 6% meet the criteria for an actual sleep disorder. In a good number of cases, getting to sleep and staying asleep is a matter of your surroundings. This month's home section focuses on areas of the bedroom that you may want to reevaluate in order to create the sleep haven you've been craving. Creating a bedroom that is conducive to your most restful sleep might require a bit of homework, but I think you'll find it won't take you long, to start focus on lighting, bedding, furniture and decor.
Bedding: It's obvious a comfortable mattress enclosed in a hypoallergenic cover protects from dust mites and allergens such as animal dandruff and pollen. Try to use only natural fibre content for your bedding such as cotton, organic cotton, silk, or linen blend. Also try using hypoallergenic pillows to prevent allergies. It's also recommended placing a humidifier in your room during the winter months, but please change the air filters at least once in three months. Furniture and decor: Don't use reds! It makes you awake and some say aggressive. Neutral colours, along with blues and greens, evoke the calming feelings that we get when we are surrounded by nature. Place a neutral area rug for noise reduction and decoration, if you live in a busy area. Don't forget to include some inspiring artwork that is meaningful and brings you feelings of calm. Horizontal lines inspire calmness and are wellsuited for a bedroom. Natural materials bring in a relaxing factor as well. Lastly, unclutter your bedroom as much as possible - it will clear your mind. Some horizontal book shelves may just be the trick to de-cluttering and adding the horizontal line accents. And relax!

Romanoff Ingredients:
3 Pints strawberries (hulled) 1/4 Cups sugar 3 Tablespoons orange juice concentrate (thawed) 4 Tablespoons dark rum Whipped Cream topping: 1 Cup whipping cream (chilled) 3 Tablespoons sour cream 2 Tablespoons sugar
Slice strawberries in half and put in a mixing bowl. Separately, combine the sugar, orange concentrate and half the dark rum and blend well. Pour the sugar/orange mix over the berries and mix or fold through gently. Cover tightly and marinate for about 30mins minimum, (If you have more time, then leave for 2 hours!) in the refrigerator. Pour whipping cream into a chilled bowl and beat until thick. Add the sour cream, 2 tablespoons of sugar and the other half of the dark rum. Beat until mixture holds shape. Cover and chill until ready to use. Spoon berries into chilled goblets and pour over the whipped cream topping and the rest of the sauce left from the bowls. You can serve this naked or dress it with a spring of mint!. 19

Exam and study stress is an issue for 70% of teenagers Research shows that school and study are causing the highest stress for adolescents. Is your child one of those? What a remarkable nation we are – in spite of the economic downturn and extreme austerity measures – 2012 was a memorable year. We celebrated the Queens' Diamond Jubilee, raised huge amounts of money for Comic Relief, BBC's Children in Need, Sport Relief, MacMillan 'World's Biggest Coffee Morning', and united once again to host a hugely successful Olympic and Paralympic Games. Now is the time to unite once again for ourselves and turn the spot light on our own community - Kingston. BACKGROUND: Love Kingston, the new and exciting fundraising campaign for the borough, supports five local projects and is building the Kingston Legacy Fund – a Fund that will be here forever more to support charitable work in our community. Half of donations received by Love Kingston will support five local groups working on a common theme of Pathways out of Poverty – Hestia (supports women suffering domestic violence), Kingston Foodbank (food in crisis), KCAH (K ingston Churches Ac tion on Homelessness), Oxygen (youth project) and Kingston Savers (the borough's first Credit Union). The other half of donations will help to build a Legacy Fund for Kingston, supporting local groups long into the future. Until March 31st 2015 we will be able to boost all donations to this Fund by match funding 50% under the government's Community First programme. A total of £128,702 is available to Kingston. Donations are invested as part of an endowed fund and the annual income will be used to support charitable activity in Kingston year on year.

Hitchcock This film showcases one of the most well-known British film directors. In case you don't know who he is – he made Psycho back in 1960 and was famous for his signature catch phrase “Good Evening” at the start of all his short films. Directed by Sacha Gervasi, Hitchcock is a film which is based on a mix of Stephen Rebello's non-fiction book Psycho and the making of the film by Alfred Hitchcock.

Crooked Garage Door Isn't it so frustrating when you have to park your car away from your house or can't get to your tools or your beer fridge, because the old garage door has had better days. Fixing it yourself can be cheaper than calling in a LOCAL professional, so if you don't have the money to replace it now, and you have the tools then here are some ways you can overcome some common problems.
DIY SECTION
For everything to work, you can avoid most common problems by giving your garage door an annual service. Clean and oiling the hinges is the most obvious, but also cleaning and protecting the coil springs from rust ensures you prolong the life of them. If you have remote access, you may also need to wipe the reflector pads for the inferred safety beams. Make sure that you clean out the door frames and by repainting the doors and frames every so often also ensures the door shuts easily and smoothly. If you can't open or close your door because the remote access or keyless entry is not working, the first obvious thing to do is check to see if the batteries are fresh. It's a more common problem than you might first think, even if the LED is working it still may be because of the batteries. You might also want to make sure the receiver inside the garage is dust and dirt free. If this doesn't cure the problem, check the settings have not changed, and some have a locking programme if the garage has not been opened for a while. It can be as simple as holding down the reset button for a couple of seconds. If your garage door opens part of the way or just a little, then check the coil springs. This could mean the coil springs are blocked or even broken. Don't force it open if you have this issue, you could do more damage. If you have to replace any door springs, then look at replacing any others as they will all be of the same age and it will save you the inconvenience of replacing the rest in a few months' time and will work out less expensive in the long run. If you are able to close the garage door using the manual override then this means that your reflector lenses are either misaligned, is an obstruction or they are just plain broken. If there are no obstructions, move the reflector lenses to realign them or give them a quick wipe. If the door is crooked you may have a broken or unattached cable, in any case I would advise you call a LOCAL professional and get them to give the garage door a good service. At least you know the garage door will be fixed for good.

Once you have decided these factors, you have to consider which kind of plants you are able to grow. You need to take into account which plants grow where, and under what conditions they prefer. Will they grow all year round? Another factor, when you design your own garden, is how much shade is necessary (if at all) for each of the plant. Make sure you understand the plants needs for sunlight. It's very nice growing lovely delicate flowers but how long will they last in the blistering heat or a heavy down pour of rain. Think about where to place plants that require a lot of sunlight. The best place for such plants is away from buildings and taller trees because these block the light at daytime. When you have finished with planning in theory, it is time to start planning the plots in your garden. Again, think for a good plan one that brings joy, is easy to keep to and at the same time efficiently uses all the available space.
As February starts fading out with the winter months, having a new out-door hobby not only gives you fresh air, but it's good for your health. Gardening is a hobby that brings joy, entertainment, and a huge sense of achievement. It is a creative activity, the result of which is a more aesthetically appealing home. Careful planning of a garden gets the ball rolling and gets you thinking about the style of garden you want. Deciding and planning which kind of garden you want is essential! Will you have a flower garden, which will blossom only during the growing season? A practical garden, to relax and sit in during the summer? A place for the kids to play, a herb garden? Or maybe just a vegetable patch. One of the main issues to consider is what weather you get. Is there enough sunshine? We all know it rains‌.But some gardens suffer more than others.
If you have decided that you will be growing herbs and vegetables, the best place for them is near the house. When they are near the house, it is more likely that you will be using them for cook ing. Besides convenience, you should also think about the location of vegetables as far as their needs for sunlight are concerned. This is especially true if yours is mainly a vegetable garden. Last, but not least, take into account your personal preferences when designing a garden. If there are particular extras you would like to have, for instance winding pathways or gazebos, include them in the initial design of the garden. Your outdoor garden is constrained only by the limits of your creativity and the growing season in your location. Happy growing! 36
