LOCAL BUSINESS

This section is all about local business owners who support Omni Local. We would like you to get to know these hard working dedicated local people within our community. This month I am talking to Ian & Elle Betchley, owners of the Queens Gastro Bar & Dining.

Supplied by: Leanna Carl-Omni Local and Ian & Elle Betchley

Q1: So, guys, how long has the Queens Gastro been in business now? A1: We took over the Queens Head in May 2014, so that is 10 months now. Q2: Have you been in this type of business a long time? A2: Yes, we have been in the business of running Pubs for the last 25 years. Q3: What made you decide you wanted to run a bar/restaurant in the Kingston area? A3: We have a Pub in Buckinghamshire and wanted to start up a second business not too far away. We were then invited to view the pub and we loved the area. reality show called “24 hours in the past”. It involves 6 Celebrities who have to work for us, set in 1832. It is a 4 week show and we will be appearing in the second week, where they come to a coaching inn.

Q4: What is your favourite thing about the Queens Gastro? A4: The way we have changed it completely around. It had a bit of a bad reputation and it’s been hard showing customers what a lovely new pub it is. We are voted in the top 10 on Trip advisor for food in Kingston Upon Thames which we are very proud of.

Q7: That’s great! We’ll keep an eye out for that one... So did you enjoy the TV experience? That sort of coverage really helps to get your name out there a little more...

Q5: You were recently involved with the Laugh Kingston Comedy Festival, are you likely to get involved in more local events like this, should the opportunity arise?

A7: Yes we did enjoy the experience, that sort of publicity is great for the business.

A5: Yes, we would love to be involved in local events and we had so much fun supporting the comedy Festival.

Q8: Brilliant! To close, do you have any tips for aspiring readers out there, looking to run their own business?

Q6: On the subject of local events, you’ve been on TV recently! Could you tell our readers more about that?

A8: Be prepared to give up a lot of your time, as running your own business takes everything you’ve got -and don’t take your eye of the ball at any point! Other than that, enjoy it.

A6: Where do we start? In 2014 we were on the Channel 4 show “4 in a Bed” (series 6, week 1), which was fantastic. Following that, we were contacted by Endemol productions and are now about to appear on a BBC1

Please take a look at the Queens Gastro Bar & Dining advert for contact information and reservations. 5

Neomi Bennett

Supplied by: Neomi Bennett-Neo-Slip

Neomi Bennett is a registered nurse and she saw a problem: Whilst training at Kingston University, Neomi noticed people unable to apply these tight, lifesaving socks called anti-embolism stockings. The stockings are routinely given to anyone who’s had an operation or a surgical procedure. Their purpose is to apply gentle pressure to the lower leg, which speeds up and squeezes blood back into circulation, preventing blood clots from developing. When a clot develops, it can break away into blood circulation and make its way to the lungs or brain. This is called Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). The stockings can be tight and condition of the skin and shape of the foot can make them extremely difficult to apply, meaning healthcare professionals would improvise with carrier bags and other methods, unfit for the purpose and potentially harmful to patients.

to both colleagues and patients, which has garnered rave reviews across the country. In one year, 10,000 people have benefited directly from Neo-slip®. Just recently an 86-year-old lady called to commend Neomi, describing Neo-slip® as a Godsend.

This concerned Neomi, and she decided to do something about it. She conducted experiments, research and focus groups, and as a result, Neo-slip® was born. The low friction Neo-slip design goes on to the foot prior to the stocking to create a smooth foundation with a lubricious effect, on which to slide stockings into place. Available in colour-coded sizes, Neo-slip® enhances the comfort of application for each individual. Trademarked, Patent-pending and supplied to NHS, Private hospitals and pharmacies across the UK. Neo-slip empowers patients to live independently and improves their quality of life. Most patients when first encountering Neoslip have shown enthusiasm for its simplicity. Feedback from healthcare professionals has highlighted the importance of the product in saving time for nurses to focus on more important tasks. The office for Healthcare Economics estimated in 1993, that the annual costs in the UK of treating patients that developed post-surgical DVT was in the region of 204.7 to 222.8 million pounds. This is a significant cost for the NHS. The House of Commons (2005) highlights that DVT causes 25,000 deaths each year. Neomi has demonstrated the use and benefit 7

Achievements: HSJ BME PIONEERS List 2014; The Pitch finalist 2014; Central European Healthcare event (Austria) 2014; National Patient Safety Finalist 2013; Lloyds TSB highly commended 2013; Smarta100 innovation Winner 2013; Finalist in the Nursing Standards Award for outstanding contribution, April 2012; Nursing Times finalist for Patient Safety and Improvement, November 2012; Winner of the people’s choice (National Varsity Pitch), May 2011; Winner of NACUE Science Technology, Engineering & Maths 2011; Taiwan international inventors Award 2013 The NeoSlip was also featured last month on the popular entrepreneurial TV show ‘Dragon’s Den’, and has raised awareness of preventable Deep Vein Thrombosis.

LOCAL CHARITY

THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: Kathryn Smith-Go Kingston CHARITY

How Kingston’s Buddies are Changing Lives with Leisure Going out for a coffee, seeing the latest release at the cinema, going to gigs or the theatre, and getting ready for summer with some Zumba workouts – what do these have in common? They’re the leisure activities that many people take for granted, yet are often out of reach for adults with learning disabilities.

Volunteering

The Kingston Buddy Scheme is changing this, combatting the social isolation faced by many people with learning disabilities by matching them with a volunteer who has similar interests in music, sport and other leisure activities, so together they can do the things they love.

has given me a different perspective on life”.

Stunt shows and horse and carriage rides have been surprising new activities in the past year, though many buddy pairs will take part in the ever-popular activities of the cinema, bowling and shopping. More energetic pairs enjoy Zumba classes, jazz dancing and cycling in Bushy Park.

As the number of people being referred for a leisure buddy is rising, the Scheme is now looking for more volunteers. The time commitment is a few hours once or twice a month, over a minimum of 12 months and meetings can be at any time to fit in with the volunteer and buddy’s availability.

Through meeting the same volunteer on a regular basis, people with learning disabilities can try new activities, get more involved in their local community and make choices about how to spend their time and money, all of which builds up confidence and self-esteem.

All expenses are paid and full training, on-going support, regular meetings with other volunteers and a big summer day out is provided. As well as bringing real joy to someone else’s life, volunteers can have a lot of fun trying new and favourite activities.

“The buddy scheme enables Emma to participate in social activities outside of the family, which she would not normally do, and she looks forward to their outings,” said a parent of one of the Scheme’s members. The Scheme doesn’t just make a huge difference for its members. It’s been lifechanging for volunteers. Lee, who has been volunteering with the same buddy for 10 years, says, “we often go out for dinner or to the cinema and we are now planning to go into London to visit a museum. My buddy is like a breath of fresh air and knowing him

Kamla, who has been a volunteer for over 8 years says of her buddy, “It gives me great pleasure. I love her sociability. If you are thinking of volunteering I would say definitely give it a go.” To be a volunteer buddy or for more information, get in touch with Kathryn at the Buddy Scheme via: www. gokingstonvolunteering.org.uk/volunteers/ buddy-scheme/ buddyscheme@gokingstonvolunteering.org. uk 020 8255 8068 / 020 8255 8685

POLICE ADVICE Buying Online When buying online, there are several types of web site which you may deal with. • Advertising sites introduce a buyer to a seller. • Auction Sites require the sellers and buyers to set up a profile.

• Flat lettings, residential lettings or holiday lettings: These can cause a considerable amount of financial loss and inconvenience. Please see our section on Holiday rentals, Home and property purchase and property takeover fraud.

The level of protection for consumers varies from site to site.

• Vehicles for Sale: That are not in possession of the advertiser and money is sent without the buyer seeing the vehicle or meeting the seller. Please see our section on Vehicle buying and selling advice.

• Advertising and Auction sites introduce buyers and sellers, they do not supply the goods.

• Dating and Romance frauds: Please see our section on Social Networking - Online Dating and “Honey Traps”

• Corporate sites are operated by companies that may also have retails outlets.

• Feedback is often exaggerated and may be manipulated in order to commit fraud. • Fraudulent adverts and web sites can be very sophisticated, make checks using internet searches. Principal Risks Whilst the vast majority of persons buying and selling online are honest and will deliver, or pay, for goods as they should, both parties should take steps to ensure that they are happy with each other and the goods being supplied. The following are examples of the most common fraudulent adverts: • Concert and Event tickets: Sales that are not through the original promoter or an authorised seller are popular with fraudsters. The chance to buy a ticket at a reduced price, late availability or a ticket for that special event will tempt the unwary.

Fraudulent adverts and websites can be very sophisticated, make checks before you send the money. What you see advertised may be a genuine article ticket, car, flat, villa. • A genuine advert may have been copied and actually be for sale. The genuine seller may be impersonated by the fraudster. • Establishing the ticket is genuine may be difficult, and may be rejected at the turnstile. • The car may pass any vehicle status checks. • The Flat or villa may be there - but when you arrive, it’s somebody else’s. Do you Love Where you Live Enough to Ride 100 Miles?

LOVE KINGSTON Supplied by: Elaine Miller-Love Kingston

The London Community Foundation is dedicated to funding community-based action that improves the lives of London’s most disadvantaged. With the generosity and involvement of donors, they have invested over £42 million into more than 8,000 charitable projects across the capital since 1995. Last year alone, through £4.3 million of funding, they made over 1,050 grants that touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of Londoners. The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames is perceived as wealthy and affluent. It is easy to see the good bits – the parks, the shops, the beautiful buildings, and the river running through. However, the borough has the most deprived 2% and the wealthiest 2% of UK residents living side by side, with one in three children living below the poverty line in some areas, and with the effects of the recession, times for many are getting tougher. Love Kingston launched in October 2012 helping to change the lives of thousands of local residents including homeless people, abused women, families without a meal on the table or in financial hardship, and troubled teenagers. It is the only borough wide philanthropic platform where all money raised stays local. They are uniting the community by working with businesses and residents to help make a positive change and significant impact. Half of donations go to The Kingston Legacy Fund, which provides sustainable grants for charity and community projects long into the future. The other half directly supports five local projects working on ‘Pathways out of Poverty’. These five projects will change in October 2015 – reflecting the change in needs of the community. Celebrating the legacy for cycling, created by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 11

starts in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, then follows a 100-mile route on closed roads through the capital and into Surrey’s stunning countryside. With leg-testing climbs and a route made famous by the world’s best cyclists at the London 2012 Olympics, it’s a truly spectacular event for all involved. Cyclists will start in waves from 06:00. Participants will be seeded, with their starting position indicative of ability and fitness, to deliver a safe and enjoyable event for all. All participants will need to be able to finish the 100 miles within 8.5 hours in order to finish safely in advance of the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic finish, and ride within a large group. The event comes through the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames – twice. Love Kingston has 18 guaranteed places in The Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 on Sunday 2nd August 2015, and would be delighted to offer you the chance to join the team – with a pledge to raise a minimum of £750. On acceptance, participants will be sent a secure link to register (on-line fee is around £45). If you would like to take part – email elaine@londoncf.org.uk

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY

Care for your Elders No matter how grateful we are for everything our parents (and their parents) have done for us in the past, or how many opportunities and privileges we’ve been given, it doesn’t always show - especially when we’re older. Family time is important, particularly with your elders, and here’s why:

THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local CHARITY

Love and care should be reciprocated Whether you believe in karma or not, it is essential that we continue the cycle -our grandparents cared for our mothers and fathers as children -our parents care for them as they grow older - our parents continue to support and raise us as children -then we do the same for them, and our children in future. Without continuing this pattern, love and equality is lost. How can we expect to be cared for in our old age when we couldn’t make a habit of doing the same for our loved ones in their later years? Our family are our first teachers Our elders are the ones who show us the ways of life, teach us the dos and don’ts, give us lessons in love and how to cope with intense and emotional situations. Their advice, their genes and their undying support are what shape us, and right at the heart of who we are, you’ll find them. Without their sacrifices and practices, we wouldn’t be capable of the things we are doing today. Their wisdom and knowledge comes second to none, as they can give us great advice -knowing more about us than anyone elseand having experiences themselves that we can definitely relate to.

13

They’ve protected us over the years Whether physically, or emotionally, they are always there for us and love us unconditionally. Our parents also have a habit of downplaying their experiences and hiding their emotions, as they don’t want to burden us or share their pain with their children. If we can appreciate everything that they’ve been through, and show them we are there to listen to their stories and their troubles, they can unload and unwind, and we can feel a lot closer. Refusing to really get to know our elders before they are gone is something a lot of people really regret and can change early on. The past, the present and the future Parents and grandparents come with a lot of history and experience to speak of, as well as plenty to talk about in relation to current events. They’ll love to share their stories with you and you’ll be glad you heard them. The future is always uncertain and no one wants to live with regrets. Let your loved ones know how you feel today and guaranteed, you will be glad you did.

LOCAL HISTORY

Easter – fresh beginnings Easter represents a new start in the Church calendar, and for everybody, whatever their religious beliefs, the approach of spring and change to Summertime brings a welcome respite from the dark days of winter and, we hope, a fresh ray of warmer sunlight with the promise of fine weather is on its way!

Supplied by: Mike Seigel - Kingston Tour Guides

The month of April takes its name from the Latin word meaning ‘to open’, and the Romans too regarded this time of year as being the opening up of plants and flowers and of the new summer season. For Kingston Tour Guides, the start of April marks a change too, since this is when we offer more regular walks, now every Sunday, right through until the end of September. And this year marks another change too, as we have moved our walks from the afternoon to the morning. We shall be starting our walks from the usual meeting-place, in the Ancient Market Place outside the Church gates, but now at 11am. We hope that this will attract local people and visitors alike to begin their Sunday in Kingston with a fascinating tour of the historical sites; taking in the Church, the Market Place, the riverside, the Guildhall and much more. You will hear all about highwaymen and coaching inns, ghosts and ghouls and what one of Henry VIII’s valets

did in his spare time! Certainly something to whet your appetite for a good lunch in one of the town’s many wonderful pubs, cafes and restaurants. If Sundays are not the best time for you to join us on a walk, we also offer special walks by arrangement, for small or large groups. In addition, we can provide talks on the history of both Kingston and Surbiton, and these talks are very popular, especially for those who may find walking for an hour and a half a little challenging. For further information on our walks and talks please ring 020 8399 0160. There is so much to learn about the history of our town, and both local people and visitors (often from far away) give us feedback on how much they enjoy our tours. So do come and join us, and we wish you all a very Happy Easter! You can also find contact details and more information about historical walks with Kingston Tour Guides on www.biglocalapp. com/kingston and www.facebook.com/ kingstontourguides.

GARDENING SECTION

Auntie Planty’s Gardening Mailbag

Q1: Now that the weather appears to be more springlike, when should I start cutting my lawn? A1: If you haven’t started mowing yet, now’s the time to start. Adjust the cutting height of your mower so that it takes off no more than half the length of each blade – for this first cut, all it needs is a light topping. Q2: Last year my roses were plagued with black spot – how can I protect them this year? A2: Good garden hygiene plays a large part in keeping blackspot under control. You’ll go a long way in breaking the life cycle of this disease if you gather up fallen leaves around the base of the plant. It’s important to pick off the worst affected leaves and dispose of them very carefully. Place them in a plastic bag and tie the top tightly. Leave the bag in the hot sun for a few days, then put them into the dustbin or burn them. This should kill off active organisms to prevent further infection. Never put the affected leaves into your compost heap. Begin a regular spraying programme with a product such as RoseClear Ultra ready to use. Use the spray as insurance against attacks, rather than as first aid when the problem has arisen. Q3: My daffodils were rather disappointing this year, is there anything I can do to encourage better flowering?

not under any circumstances remove the leaves at this stage. As for poor flowering, the most likely cause is that the bulbs have been starved of water and nutrients over the previous year, making them shrivel up. During droughts, we tend to forget to feed and water the plants that are out of sight Q4: I have noticed that the slugs are beginning to slither back into my garden – someone told me to use a garlic wash, where do I buy this? A4: You make it yourself! Crush 2 bulbs of garlic; steam or boil in 1 litre of water for 3 to 4 minutes until blanched; strain mixture and make up to l litre; leave to cool. When ready to use, mix one tablespoon into 3.8 litres of water. Using a spray bottle, wet leaves in late afternoon (in dry weather). Reapply every two weeks. The mixture will apparently dry on the leaves making them unappealing to slugs and snails! It also appears to work for aphids too. © 2015 Valerie McBride-Munro Auntie Planty offers garden problem solving sessions in your own garden, or by email valerie@auntieplanty.com

Wood Flooring – Environmentally Sound and Beautiful

Supplied by: David Wimblett-Chilworth Flooring

There is so much more to a beautiful wood floor in your home than long life and natural beauty, as they add style, ooze character and can increase the value of your house. From its sustainable source to its health benefits, wood flooring is a great choice for your home, not only from a world environment point of view, but also from that of the environment within your home. Unlike most floor coverings, wood floors come from a nature source that is totally sustainable. Today, timber is only harvested from carefully managed forests and in fact more trees are planted than are cut down every year. Then there are the health benefits. The Environmental Agency says that poor indoor air quality is a major health concern. The installation of a wood floor will greatly benefit all of us, but especially those who suffer from allergies. So why is this the case? Well, the hard surface of a wood floor will not trap or harbour dust mites or moulds. Did you know that every dust mite produces 20 droppings a day and it is the droppings that cause allergic problems? With this in mind, all allergy advice includes the removal of carpets from bedrooms. In addition, it is also harder to walk pesticides and other toxins into a wood floor. This brings us to care and maintenance, which is little more than simply sweeping and vacuuming. Vacuuming, whether carpet or wood flooring, is best done with a vacuum cleaner with a micro filter. A wood floor needs to be protected from moisture, and any water spillage must be dried up immediately. Floor protectors should be used on furniture and rugs can be used in high traffic areas. The only other thing to do is to clean with a proper hardwood floor cleaner from time to time. The only thing to do now is to choose your

wood floor from the many species and colours available. The key here is not only the type of room but also the room colour, its fabrics and furnishings. Other than the walls, the floor represents the largest expanse of colour or pattern in a room and is long-term. Oak is popular but other woods to consider are: Maple, Beech, Cherry, Walnut, Ash, Jatoba and Merbau. With each species there are different colours and finishes. Samples of your chosen wood are best seen in your home as they often look very different in showroom lighting. A wood floor will enhance your home and your life, is beautiful, unique, environmentally sound, affordable and durable. There really isn’t a better choice if you are considering a new look for your home. The Chilworth Flooring Co. Specialists in wood flooring www.thechilworthflooringco.co.uk

Kingston Junior Drama Co

Supplied by: David Lawson LeanKingston Junior Drama Co

Kingston Junior Drama Company is an independent theatre group for young actors aged 10 – 16. It offers high quality drama training and regular performances. The group was founded in 2007 by David Lawson Lean. He worked for many years as an actor before establishing himself as a children’s playwright and drama teacher. As an actor, David had worked in repertory theatre, where actors learned their craft in the rehearsal room and on the stage. His concept for Kingston Junior Drama Company was to replicate that training experience for children and teenagers who wanted something a little more than a regular drama class. David prides himself in the fact that his young actors can turn around a challenging play in ten rehearsals. “It can be a very intense process,” he explains, “but it is an exciting journey and the performances the young actors give at the end of it never fail to impress me.” Kingston Junior Drama Company produced its first play with a cast of twelve actors. The company now has 2 groups, each comprising of around twenty five young actors. One group rehearses in Kingston on Tuesdays and the other in Tolworth on Wednesdays. Performances take place at the cornerHOUSE Community Arts Centre and regularly attract full houses. Each group performs three times a year, presenting a repertoire of original drama alongside new adaptations of literary classics. Their most recent venture was a specially commissioned version of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. The focus of Kingston Junior Drama Company is on the creative development of

young artists, and the fostering of a life-long enthusiasm for drama. Commitment is an essential requirement, but the hard work pays off with many members of the company regularly working professionally in theatre and television. Kingston Junior Drama Company works closely with many organisations, including Kingston Arts. In 2014 the group partnered with KT1 Management, a new agency run by Stephany Gardiner, to represent its young actors in their professional careers. The group also works regularly with MA film students from Kingston University on their film projects, and also welcomes regular visits by students from the university’s prestigious drama department. Having now cemented a strong reputation, both locally and in the wider arts world, Kingston Junior Drama Company now attracts a lot of interest. An output of original work along with regular performances and professional standards offers young actors a unique experience which they never forget. Springtime Splendour

THIS MONTH’S FEATURE

April tends to be one of the more relaxed months throughout the year. Springtime means the weather isn’t quite ready for hitting the beach, but is usually mild enough to get out of the house a little.

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

A lot of us find that one of the best things about April is the welcoming gift of chocolate! This time of year is one of the only times when we throw out the rulebook, ditch the diets and indulge ourselves - and othersin a chocolatey treat (not including Christmas goodies and Halloween loot)! Of course, this generally applies to the little ones, but there is no reason you shouldn’t reward yourself now and then for all the work you’ve done in 2015 so far. Some people say “chocolate is love”, and it has supposedly been proven that eating chocolate can have an effect on the “feelgood” centres of the brain. Whether or not this is the case for everyone, if it makes you feel great - do it! Just try not to overdo it, as you don’t want too much sugar and fat in your diet. Ideally, aiming for real, dark chocolate with more than 70% cocoa solids will be the healthier option, and it actually contains a lot of nutrients, as well as less sugar.

setting up an Easter egg hunt this year for your children? Maybe you could get the neighbours involved, or invite your friends and family over? Chocolate isn’t for everyone of course, so feel free to get creative!

Not everyone celebrates Easter, or really recalls the story behind it - to some, they may pick up an Easter egg on a shopping trip for someone special, and say nothing more about it. It is a shame to pass up tradition and enjoy the occasion, as there are a lot of ways to do so. Even after Easter Sunday has passed, a bit of chocolatey fun will really give everyone a pick-me-up on a quiet weekend at home. For example, have you considered 22

Alternatively, you could create a little arts and crafts workshop at home to spend some time with the little ones. You could even create your own confections. Invest in some easter egg moulds (which could be bought online, or at stores like Lakeland), and use a weekend or a rainy day to sit with the kids and make your own easter eggs. Or, simply decorate ready-made chocolate eggs. It doesn’t have to stop at Easter eggs of course, you can always use various other designs, or even stock up on some festive-themed moulds for homemade Christmas gifts later

in the year. If there’s chocolate and candy toppings involved - the kids are bound to love it! I personally loved spending time in the kitchen as a child, learning how to bake alongside my nan and helping my mum with dinners and desserts - especially when I got to lick the bowl! Its not just a good way to keep kids busy, but also a great way to bond and create some memories. You may even be teaching them useful homemaking skills for when

23

they’re older. Of course, if you’re looking for something to do on your own or with a friend during the Spring break, why not enquire about Imber Court Photography Courses (page 20), and discover how to really capture some memories? Being one of the quieter months of the year, you should take the opportunity to start saving up (if you haven’t already) for a little adventure away from home this Summer. Whether it means going on that dream vacation you’ve wanted to embark on for a long time, a day or two on the eurostar, or a week-long trip to Brighton beach or in Cornwall -set a date! You don’t want to look back over the Summer and feel like you did nothing with it, so make the most of it and get planning!

The Spongebob Movie: Sponge out of Water

Supplied by: Leanna Carl Alec Baldwin. Sponge out of Water has a slightly different take, with their adventure taking place on land, and with more visually realistic animations.

Here’s one for the whole family! Of course, much like some of the usual Spongebob humour occasional references may be inappropriate for younger children. I myself have no shame in finding this movie hilarious! The previous Spongebob movie (which was also hysterical) was a real hit, featuring special guest star David Hasselhoff and the familiar voices of stars like

Our hero Spongebob (voiced by toon-favourite actor Tom Kenny) is on a mission. He must retrieve the stolen Krabby Patty recipe! This leads him and all of his comrades into our world, where he finds himself in a bit of a tangle with a pirate (otherwise known as Antonio Banderas)! In order for the gang’s heroics to succeed, the group decide to look the part - transforming themselves into superheroes! Adventure, danger and delights await them, but can Spongebob, Patrick, Sandy and Squidward save the famed Krusty Krab secret recipe?

Out on DVD

Black Sea search the depths of the ocean, recruiting a misfit crew to aid in their mission. There is a rumour that a submarine carrying tons of gold dwells somewhere within the Black Sea, and the newly-founded team of explorers are eager to find it.

This movie is definitely a tense one at times! Directed by Kevin MacDonald (academy award winner who directed “The Last King of Scotland”) and starring Jude Law (lead in “Alfie” and “Sherlock Holmes”. This story focuses on a rogue submarine captain who has recently been fired from a salvage company. The submarine captain decides to team up with a shadowy backer to 25

Eventually, hints of desperation, greed and a general feeling of claustrophobia for everyone starts to take its toll on the team, and the situations grows more and more dangerous. Uncertainty and fear causes the men to turn on each other, in order to survive and hopefully leave with the incredibly sought-after treasures. Who will survive? Who will prosper?

The Cat Sat on the Mat

Supplied by: Phillip Holt - NLP Now

What comes to mind when you think about that sentence? What colour is the cat? What colour is the mat? In 1956, Professor George A. Miller (Princeton University), stated that at any one time the average amount of information a human can hold in working memory is 7±2. 08451306213, try and repeat the number without referring back. We cannot remember, as with any telephone number given to us as a long string of digits. Typically as we are being told the number, we hear, “0845130”, the brain says “too much information”, and we miss “6213”, or the whole number completely. Therefore, when most people give a telephone number, they will break the sequence down into less than 7 digits, as “0845”-“130”-“62”-“13”.

read a certain foreign language, you won’t know, the brain will give you some result, even if frustration of not understanding. An idea of a gun? That is what your brain now believes. It actually means “good morning” in Turkish.

Some people can remember more than 7, some, less. As you look in front of you now, how many items can you see, how many colours, shapes and sizes? What sounds do you hear? What do you feel? Your bottom on the seat? Were you aware of your bottom until you read it here? No, because right now we can only take in 7±2 pieces of information, and those 7 were taken-up by reading the words on this page.

Now, the experiences we have, which we now know are not the whole truth, but our mind’s interpretation of the happening, 7±2 pieces of information become the truth, and often these are totally wrong. These beliefs influence our lives, create our fears, our phobias, our cultures, our whole world. Part of my work is to help people recover that deleted information, to help them see more of what really is or has been.

We are bombarded with so much information that the brain cannot take all of it in, therefore, it selects the 7±2 most important elements, and the result becomes the truth. Our understanding of any situation is based on 7±2 pieces of information, but to make sense of that depleted information, our brain has to go into the memory banks of previous experiences to understand the meaning.

The cat sat on the mat. You would see in your mind’s eye a particular type of cat, a mat of a particular colour and perhaps a location. Your brain has inserted the missing information, which has become your reality. Actually you are wrong, as my cat is Cat Stevens, sitting on a prayer mat in US Immigration, as they will not let him enter the USA, he had the wrong visa.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

The Bikini Season Countdown

Supplied by: Valdirene Ruston-Sofia R

Summer Holiday plans are time-consuming. From waxing to dropping a few pounds, there is always a never-ending list of beautifying tasks to tick off before you feel ready to hit the beach. You’re probably thinking the same as me: ‘That time of year’ has come round far too quickly. After resolutions of going to the gym didn’t go to plan, you’re now challenged to look ‘bikini ready’ in just a few weeks, and feeling slightly panicked. Inevitably, comes the ‘holiday bikini diet’ in endless variations, as sold to us by our favourite magazines. The thing is, crash diets don’t actually work in the long term, and may cause stress. So, what’s the better alternative? Simple: to look after ourselves and our bodies, not only in short intensive spurts, but as a long term project. More time, less stress Long term goals can give you motivation and avoid stress. It helps to manage a healthy regime whilst toning up or targeting cellulite – the reason for our bikini phobia! I was recently given a gym membership by my husband. I was delighted and totally ready to embark on my fitness plan. For the past 2 years, this wasn’t possible, as giving birth to my second child means finding someone to watch the children, and a lot less time and energy. So an exclusive club, with a gym and sauna PLUS a crèche is sure to help. You need motivation to cope with a 29

sustainable fitness plan, and eating the wrong foods won’t help. The wrong kind of breakfast could set you up for a big fall, so start your day with all the right things if you’re going to achieve the results you want. I’ve toyed with an many ‘quick fix’ regimes, until I realized that our best weapon is confidence. Don’t fret if you try on a bikini, following a ‘7 day bikini diet’ and you don’t look like Halle Berry… Start thinking about next year, and give your body time to adjust to a healthier lifestyle. Through these small changes I’ve been adding to my daily regime, I’ve already seen results in only 2 weeks: Balance your meals: If you eat 3 meals a day, make sure 2 of them are low in carbs, moderate in fat and high in protein. Drink plenty of water or a protein shake: If your daily workout involves running for the train to work, keep a bottle of water in your bag. Try to take the stairs instead of the lift! Snack healthily: (Particularly if you’re sat in an office all day) Instead of grabbing a chocolate muffin and coffee from the canteen, try some chopped fruit or nuts.

Fitting a Cat Flap

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

Be prepared Ensure you have all the equipment for the job to hand, such as a saw, tape measure, drill, cellotape, ruler, nuts, screws, and safety goggles. Assemble the cat flap using the instructions included. Measure the height of your cat, as you’ll want to give them plenty of room. Mark the height of their legs onto the door using a pencil, then their overall height. Find the perfect place All flaps should come with a paper/cardboard template or instructions that will show you how big to cut the hole. Tape the template onto the area you’ve chosen and drill a hole into each corner. Before securing the template, measure enough distance between the floor and the lower edge of the cat flap to allow for your cat to casually creep in. The flap itself will be larger than the hole, so make sure you have clearance from the lower edges of the door. Once you’ve drilled a hole in each corner, you can remove the template and join the dots using a ruler and pencil.

on the waste side. With your help, the waste will then push outward. Fit and finish Test the fit by holding the cat flap against the hole and checking the door swings open with ease. There may be a lot of filing left to do to remove any waste. Clear the area away and properly install the cat flap using the instructions included. You should create four screw holes to attach the flap, and fit both sides together securely using nuts and screws. Test that it works smoothly again, then try to encourage your cat and show them how to use it.

Cut a hole (with a jigsaw) Ensure that you put on eye protection and any other safety gear needed. If you have a jigsaw, you can start cutting the shape straight out using the guideline, by sawing at an angle with a slim blade. After you start the motor, press the blade against the panel and guide it slowly around the marked line. Cut a hole (without a jigsaw) You’ll need to start a hole in the centre of your markings using a drill, then get a keyhole saw to cut around it. You can drill additional holes around the edge and join them up like a dot-to-do if you want to do it faster, just make sure the drilled holes are

When to call a professional Some doors come double-glazed, which can make it near impossible to do a DIY cat flap job yourself, so if this is the case - wait and seek guidance from a professional fitter.

The better the condition of your car when you come to sell it, the more money you’ll get. As with selling a house, that may mean spending some money first to make the most of your asset. OUR NEW BUSINESS SECTION

A Tale of Two Dinners Not so long ago I went out to dinner at a local restaurant I’d never visited before. The waiting staff were friendly, there was a good feel to the restaurant, and the menu looked interesting. I decided to try their fish stew and what a fabulous choice it turned out to be. It was beautiful. Real chunks of at least three types of fish, a nice big langoustine, half-a-dozen mussels or so, a lovely rich soup and lots of lovely toasted bread to soak up the juices. All together a real treat. Recently, I was in the area again. Having had such a good meal on my first visit I decided to dine at the same restaurant. After having a long hard look at the menu, and not being able to decide on which of the tempting dishes to try, and, as it was so good the first time, I went for the fish stew again. How I wish I hadn’t. It looked similar: large langoustine, lovely tomato coloured soup, but that was as far as it went. There were about three times as many mussels as on the first occasion, but some weren’t very good, only one piece of (bony) fish and just two bits of toasted bread. Nowhere enough to soak up the lovely juices – only the juices weren’t quite as tasty - and so I ended up leaving most of the soup.

So what has this got to do with your business? Well, I will never have the fish stew again, as I can’t be sure if it will be good or bad, and I don’t want to be disappointed, but worse, I may not even visit the restaurant again. And this is what it has to do with your business. Do you provide a service, an

experience, which is consistent? Put another way, do your customers know exactly where they stand? Because if not, you could be losing business without even realising it. Let’s face it, I’m not going to go back to the restaurant and tell them I might not be back; I just won’t go again. The thing about the consistency of your offering is that it doesn’t have to be just about the big things. It could be the way your telephone is answered, or not answered. It could be the way that your customers are met at reception. It could be whether your invoices arrive at the same time each month, or how quickly you return a phone call. What’s important is that your customers have an expectation, and whatever that might be, they will be a happier customer if they can count on their expectation being fulfilled consistently. After all, it’s why the Big Mac is such a success! You know exactly what you are getting every time you order one. PROPERTY SECTION

Tips on Buying a Property Buying a house is one of the biggest decisions you will make in life and it tends to be an educational roller coaster if you have not bought one before. It is important to start off on the right foot, to ensure that when you are ready to narrow down and view your first property, you are well placed to move forward quickly and effectively. Budget - Before you start drooling over the amazing properties on Rightmove, Zoopla or On the Market, you need to be realistic about how much you can afford. A good financial advisor or mortgage broker will talk you through income versus mortgage %, and ultimately will give you a bracket to work within. You also need to factor in your deposit, solicitors fees, stamp duty, renovation and moving costs. Apply for an offer in principle from the suggested mortgage company immediately, to make you a viable buyer in the eyes of the estate agent/ seller. Location, Location, Location. This is really the most important factor. Try to view this as a combination of what you need for the next 1-2 years, or if possible, 5-8 years, which is the average time we spend in our homes as we go through life, up until retirement. Consider transport links, how you will get to and from work, proximity to activities that are important to you, access to your family, type of neighbourhood, SCHOOLS if this is, or likely to be a factor. What do you want or need in a Property? Categories are straightforward: House vs Flat, maybe a bungalow – but how many bedrooms/receptions/bathrooms do you need? If your budget allows, give yourself additional Sq/Mtrs now. It will just add value later, as the housing market is not likely to go down in this area for the foreseeable future. Make a list of ‘Must Haves’ and ‘Nice to Have’. 37

Supplied by: Peter Greenwood-Alex Clark

Prioritise them, and be truly honest about what you can or cannot compromise over. There are a lot of people looking to buy a property that they can add value to, upgrade/ extend, but it is getting harder to find these properties. Remember, the agent will value the house as it is presented to the market, and generally will listen to what you want to do, but ultimately will believe that changes are at your cost, not the sellers. Lets Start Looking… Currently, 85% of people search online or use mobile apps, so set up alerts on all property web sites to ensure that you are notified as soon as your potential property hits the market. Go armed to your viewing with your mortgage offer, your ‘Must Haves’ and an open mind to explore all opportunities. If you would like to talk to me about any points above or any property-related questions, then please do so, and pop into our office at 129 Richmond Road for a chat. www.alexclarklettings.co.uk/kingstonwimbledon-branch/ Email: peter@alexclarkkingston.co.uk Tel: 020 8239 0535
