LOCAL BUSINESS

This month we are talking to Celia Osborne of Numberworks’n’words

Supplied by: Celia Osborne

Q1: Hi Celia, please tell our readers a bit about yourself. Well initially I did a music degree as I love playing my clarinet. I wasn’t good enough to go professional, hated teaching it but liked the kids, so I trained in primary classroom teaching. Over my 23 years classroom experience, I taught everything to all primary school ages and organised the English curriculum for 18 years. In 2009 I took over NumberWorks’nWords. Q2: Why did you leave classroom teaching? To be honest I became frustrated that the curriculum was dictated by the government and not the needs of the children. I felt I had no time to support each individual child. My own 9 year old daughter had been helped hugely by NumberWorks’nWords in her maths, so when Mike, the previous owner left, I bought the business.

I love to be able to concentrate on something that will help each individual child and have the time to do it – something I just couldn’t do in the classroom. I love to see the delight in a child’s face when they realise they can now do something well. Even better when they show off their new skills to their proud parents.

Q3: Could you please tell our readers a little about NumberWorks’nWords? NumberWorks’nWords works after school and on Saturday mornings with children from reception to GCSE to support them in maths and English. The work we do is directly linked to the National Curriculum, but we can focus directly on each individual child and work at their pace. Q4: What sort of clientele does NumberWorks’nWords provide services for?

Q8: Are you quite local to Kingston/ community-focused? Yes I live in New Malden and both my daughters have been to Kingston schools. All my clients are obviously local and I support Christmas and Summer fairs in Kingston and Surbiton schools. Q9: Can my child have a trial session?

Some of our students find school work hard, some just need a confidence boost, whilst others are racing ahead and need to be stretched or try for selective schools. We’re as delighted when our less confident older students just scrape a pass on their GCSEs as when our more gifted ones get top grades for theirs. This year we have helped students achieve both.

Certainly, I’ll give each child a free assessment in maths or English (or both) and a trial lesson so you can see if what we offer is right for your child Q10: How can I get in touch: Give me a ring on 020 8499 1234 (I’ll usually be able to answer in person), e mail surbiton@numberworks.com www. numberworksnwords.com

Q7: What do you like best about what you do?

COMMUNITY PERSON

Surrey Sculpture Society Invites Renowned Sculptor Michael Speller to Deliver Autumn Lecture

Supplied by: Surrey Sculpture Society

As part of their ‘Understanding Sculpture’ programme, the Surrey Sculpture Society (SSS) organises a series of lectures by leading sculptors, who share their experience, inspiration and skills with the Society’s members and any members of the public who have an interest in sculpture. The final SSS Lecture of the year will be presented by renowned sculptor Michael Speller, who was the official artist for the London Olympics and who has completed many large scale public commissions. The lecture will be held at Surrey University in the Austin Pearce Lecture Theatre 1 on Wednesday 18th October at 7:30pm. Tickets: £5 at the door and free to SSS members and students. ‘We are very excited about having such an accomplished and highly respected sculptor as Michael Speller presenting one of our lectures,’commented Henriette van der Does, Chair of the SSS. ‘The lecture will form part of our ‘Understanding Sculpture’ series of events and this is a great opportunity for anyone interested in sculpture to come and find out how one of our leading sculptors works.’ Michael Speller’s beautifully balanced slender sculptural figures are almost exclusively in bronze, with his distinctive, elongated figures often impressed with emotive words and objects to create hugely expressive and textural surfaces. Solitary or grouped, his figures represent how we live in the world, combining the influences of family, friends, environment and society. Michael Speller commented: ‘My work with the human form attempts to find a rhythm and balance in our lives, reflecting and realising our imperfections and then counterbalancing them with positivity and support in order to achieve a visual and spiritual equilibrium within ourselves and the world around us.’ Michael Speller was named official artist for the BT Art of Sport Programme for The 2012 London Olympics and was for many

years a resident artist at The Art Academy, London. He has completed many private and public commissions. Working successfully with private collectors and with corporate organisations on larger scale public commissions, he has created a portfolio of personal and relevant work within the UK and globally. One of his more recent commissions combined 210 figures to form a huge open bronze sphere for The Crown Charity, Greenwich Hospital. These figures represent the serving and retired personnel from The Royal Navy and Royal Marines who receive support from the charity. Each individual figure is unique and has been moulded and impressed with objects and words that reference their lives and location. They form a protective shield that travels up the sphere culminating in a domed roof which is a reference to the architectural style of Sir Christopher Wren, who designed The Royal Naval College Greenwich. Encompass was unveiled in Greenwich by HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York, in April 2016. This summer Michael’s ‘Nourish’ sculpture formed the centre piece of Kate Gould’s gold medal winning show garden at RHS Chelsea. POLICE ADVICE

October 2017

Supplied by: Alison McWinnie - MET Police

Hello Readers! The Metropolitan Police is working hard to keep the public safe and make the streets a hostile territory for criminals who use scooters, mopeds, motorbikes and bicycles to snatch valuables, including mobile phones, from members of the public. These offences are being tackled in a coordinated effort under Operation Venice. How can riders prevent their bikes being stolen? • Parking: Choose designated parking with a stand and security loop, or if this is not available try areas with lots of people, good lighting and CCTV • Locks: Use more than one lock, focusing on disc locks and chain locks, fitted tight to the bike and through difficult to remove parts

• Try going hands free or stand away from the roadside close to a wall so no one can come up behind you

• Time: When leaving your bike for a long period or overnight, lock it to something secure and use a motorbike cover. At home consider using fitted anchors to secure your bike

• Your phone comes with a range of security features, such as keypad locks and remote data wiping. Make sure they are all activated to stop thieves from accessing your phone and personal data

• Attention: Use audible alarms where possible to draw unwanted attention to the thieves

• Know how to identify your phone if it’s stolen

• Marking: Choose to mark your bike parts with the vehicle identification number (VIN) number, your postcode or registration number using an ultraviolet marker pen or property marking kit

• Find your IMEI number by dialling *#06# from your phone and keep a written note of it. If the phone is stolen, report it to the police and your mobile provider to stop it being used

• Insurance: Some companies will offer discounts on your insurance if you invest in certain security measures, so ask before you make your purchase

• Register your phone on www.immobilise. com to help police return recovered stolen property and combat the sale of stolen goods. Police recover more than 2500 items registered to the website on average every month. Never confront a thief or risk your own safety for the sake of your mobile device.

Personal crime prevention advice: • Be aware of your surroundings at all times and keep your personal property secure • Don’t text while you’re walking as you won’t notice potential thieves approaching

Until next month, stay safe!

• Use the security features on your phone

LOCAL CHARITY

Joel Night Shelter Staff and volunteers at Kingston’s awardwinning Joel Night Shelter are gearing up for another busy season at the centre, supporting vulnerable people who are facing homelessness. Around 400 people in the Kingston borough are threatened with homelessness every year so the Joel centre is a lifeline to many single people who would otherwise be sleeping rough or sofa surfing. The permanent 17-bed shelter, based at St Peter’s church, Norbiton offers a safe and secure place to stay, wholesome, home-cooked meals, laundry facilities and tailored support from expert staff. Shelter Manager Dan Wheeler said, “We believe that community is critically important in breaking the cycle of homelessness, addiction and isolation. Our ethos is to help people to believe in themselves. We do this by encouraging guests to take part in the preparation of meals, cleaning the shelter and tending the vegetable garden, as well as volunteering in the local community.” Dan added, “When we work together and share life around a table, the effects on people’s health and mental well-being are amazing. This approach transforms lives!”

THIS MONTH’S CHARITY Supplied by: Joel Community Services

Volunteering - cooking, socialising with guests, helping with breakfast or even staying the night at the shelter. Fundraising - examples: organise sponsored events, a physical challenge, ‘Great British Bake-off’ competitions or cake sales in aid of Joel. Monthly Giving and one-off donations Other Donations - Oyster cards with £5 top up, quality men’s clothing, new socks and underwear, belts.

Andy is a former guest who now volunteers at the Joel Night Shelter every week. He ended up on the streets after returning to the UK from overseas, “I arrived in London with one suitcase and a few pounds but had nowhere to stay and no support. I was soon spending the nights, cold and wet, walking the streets. In February 2016 I was directed to Joel where finally I had somewhere safe, stable and friendly to stay. During the next few months I regained my self-respect and managed to get a good job. Joel gave me a hope that there was a future and that my life wasn’t over.” Here are some of the ways you can support the invaluable work of the Joel community:

Cesar Picton Picton, a native of Senegal, was brought from Africa in 1761 at the age of six and presented to Sir John Philipps of Norbiton Place, Kingston.

LOCAL HISTORY Supplied by: Mike Seigel - Kingston Tour Guides

Probably born a Muslim, he was baptised into the Christian faith on 6th December 1761, and christened Cesar. It would have been customary for Cesar to become a servant to the male member of the family, but he became Lady Philipps’s protégé. He seems to have mixed on virtually equal terms with the family, which had a long tradition of supporting education and Christian missionary work. Sir John and Lady Philipps had one son and three daughters. They also owned Picton Castle in Pembrokeshire, South Wales. Sir John died in 1764, and two years later Lady Philipps made her will. This went through several revisions and when she died in 1788 she left £100 to Cesar, a very substantial sum. Cesar, now on his own, spent his legacy on renting a coach house and stables in High Street (then ‘West by Thames’), Kingston, known today as Picton House. Giving himself the surname ‘Picton’ (after Picton Castle), he set up as a coal merchant. By 1795, at 40, he was a much respected businessman having made enough money to buy Picton House and other property, including a wharf and a malt house. In 1801 one of the Philipps daughters died and left Cesar a further £100, although he was by now wealthy by his own efforts. In 1807, when he was 52, Cesar let the Kingston properties and went to live in Tolworth in a rented cottage, and was described in deeds as a ‘gentleman’. In February 1816 he moved again to Thames Ditton, where he bought a property for the then huge sum of £4,000. This house was also known as Picton House (or Cottage) but was later renamed Sunnyside House. Picton lived there for 20 years and his will tells us more about his lifestyle. He had a horse and chaise, two watches with gold chains and seals, brooches, gold rings and shirt pins. There was a tortoiseshell tea chest, silver spoons, and tongs. He had paintings of his friends and his dogs and, intriguingly, a portrait of himself.

When Cesar was living in Thames Ditton, the remaining Philipps daughters died, both in 1820. Joyce left him £100, and Katherine left him £50 plus £30 a year for life. Cesar died in 1836, aged 81. He was buried on 16th June in All Saints’ Church, Kingston. In his will he asked to be “plain but decently buried within the Parish Church, Kingston”. Nevertheless, as Cesar was then a man of immense bulk, he had to be brought to the church on a four-wheel trolley, and lowered into the vault down an inclined plane of planks on rollers. His last resting place is marked by a floor plaque in the south aisle inscribed “CP 1836”. A wall plaque to Cesar was unveiled at Picton House in Kingston in 1998. If you are interested in learning more about the fascinating history of our town, why not join one of our tours, led by specially trained volunteers? We meet at 11am every Sunday in the summer months outside the church gates in the Ancient Market Place. The charge is £5 per adult - or you can arrange a special tour for you and your friends at a time to suit you. For further information please look at our website www.kingstontourguides.org.uk

ARTS

October 2017 Since finishing her M.A. at Bath Spa University, KAOS member Jan Lee Johnson has been listed on Axisweb. org, the online directory of contemporary artists. It was from this resource that she was contacted by the West Lothian Arts Centre in Scotland to begin a 6-month residence with a solo exhibition, which opens in November until April 2018.

Supplied by: KAOS

Lee Johnson gained a place at the Royal College of Art, and a varied career followed as a scenic artist at the BBC, a freelance courtroom artist, as well as being a part time tutor in painting and drawing. Her painting “The Shoes of Jackie O” has been selected for the National Open Competition. This is particularly rewarding as Jan has spent several months recovering from an operation on her (painting) hand for Duputreyns Contractures also known as the ‘Viking Disease’. The title ‘Christmas Island’ of the painting shown here refers to the first UK testing of the atomic bomb on an island of that name in the Pacific. In the painting the dark mushroom cloud forms the background, behind a self-portrait sitting safely on the artist’s father’s knee. The interior shows a TV black and white test card and wallpaper motif of 1950’s design. It is a celebration of a

child’s party with balloons, cakes and jelly, showing the darker side of grownup life and the growing apprehension the artist felt at the time and sadly is threatening once again. This, along with ‘Rainbow’, are part of the show ‘Narrative, Consensus and Conflict’ at the Howden Park Centre, West Lothian. David Hockney was an inspiration for her passionate enjoyment of the iPad, creating digital drawings and art work. There are two forthcoming iPad workshops, one at Kew gardens on 19 Oct and the other at the V&A on 21 Oct. Happiness starts with your Tum!

SYNERGY SECTION Supplied by: Chris Reynolds - Synergy

New science, including a report from the University of Cambridge, shows that changes in the human microbiome, the resident bacteria that live within our intestines, may actually exercise strong control of various aspects of human health. Researchers are now able to identify patterns in the types of bacteria in the gut that may either correlate with obesity and metabolic syndrome, or may relate to superior health. This is revolutionary news. It presents an entirely new scenario related to our health and focuses on the gut bacteria that actually outnumber the cells of the human body by an amazing factor of 10 to one. Basically, a healthy microbiome translates into a healthy human, it is clear that trauma to the gut microbiome can have serious consequences. For decades, nutritional supplements have helped people target different body systems; however, these solutions have not adequately addressed what is now understood to be at the core of overall health. How does an unhealthy microbiome affect me? 70% of your serotonin is made in your gut, so the health of your gut is going to affect your mood, anxiety, depression and focus. We are more bacteria than human! 90 trillion bacteria, fungi, etc. live on us and in us! Mounting research has suggested that the bacteria living in our digestive tract play a significant role in our overall health. An unhealthy microbiome not only gives digestion problems but, more surprisingly, brain functioning and related issues. Synergy’s Elite Health Solution Elite Health is the pinnacle of wellness, where age does not dictate ability. Scientifically, Elite Health is optimal metabolic function, the state in which all body systems are performing efficiently, which gives you the energy to see more, do more, and be more, no matter what stage of life you’re in. It is stepping into every new decade with new ambition. Elite Health is the freedom to live without limitation, and it’s through a healthy mind and body that this freedom is realized.

Working with scientists, researchers, and medical doctors at the Hughes Center for Research and Innovation, Synergy WorldWide has carefully engineered proprietary solutions designed to Purify, Fortify, and Protect the body, all beginning with the microbiome. One Week Purify Synergy’s one-week Purify Kit is comprised of patented products clinically tested to give your microbiome the overhaul it needs to start clean and fuel good health. The primary objective of this kit is to begin microbiome purification, followed by a nutritious diet of proteins, complex carbohydrates, fruits, and vegetables. By reducing the consumption of simple carbohydrates and sugars, your microbiome will be fuelled by healthy nutrition that stimulates optimal performance. It heals the gut and rebalances the good bacteria and can also help eliminate parasites and toxins. Contact Chris for more information and pricing: m: 07771 703815 e: synergyhealth4me@gmail.com

Creating a Halloween Costume with What’s in your Makeup Bag

HEALTH & BEAUTY Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

Sometimes we don’t want to go overboard for Halloween or spend a lot of money, maybe we find ourselves with last minute plans and have to pull something together. The truth is, there are tons of ways to put something together using what you may already have, especially if you’re a bit of a makeup enthusiast. For example: Go gory The simplest way to work out something Halloween-fitting and impressive for your party guests or trick or treaters is to pull out your red hues and a little liquid eyeliner. You’ll probably feel better using actual makeup on your face instead of face paint and fake blood. You can create scars, stitching marks, bruises and lacerations by blending your reds, purples, browns and yellows or turn yourself into a stitched-up ragdoll. This can be effectively creepy-looking.

like Captain Jack Sparrow - or, if you’ve got a lot of pink in your wardrobe, add a simple blonde wig and recreate a Barbie look with a very girly, wide-eyed look featuring blues and pinks. White eyeliner may help you out a lot here when it comes to widening and reshaping your eyes. When in doubt, go all out!

You can even use liquid lipstick or (a little hard to find but not impossible) red eyeliner to create fresher looking cut or vampire blood drips. You don’t have to go down the gruesome route, but it’s a no-fail for the occasion and doesn’t need to be too specific. It’s also a very wallet-conscious method.

Sometimes a striking costume just comes from covering your face in colours, for instance, create a masquerade look by fashioning a makeup eye-mask or literally covering yourself in green eyeshadow/dazzle dust for a witch costume or The Incredible Hulk/She Hulk.

Pick a well-known figure to impersonate Whether it’s your favourite celebrity or fictional character, you can simply try and emulate their style through the use of makeup hues you don’t normally love. There are so many tutorial videos on youtube to help you look like certain celebrities, or you can just get a good photo to work from and improvise. Your friends will love your homage to someone they know. You could also tweak prior costumes and ensembles, for example, if you have a pirate outfit from your last world book day or fancy dress, use your eyeliners and shadows to look 17

One year for Halloween, I had a costume in mind that didn’t pan out on the night, so I did a complete 180, threw on some black clothing and covered all my exposed skin in blue dust for an homage to a waterdwelling witch in a videogame I liked - much to the amusement of friends; especially when showering off the blue for a while the following day! If you have the patience though, it’s a great easy-fix. (Photos & Makeup by Sienna Jelley)

GARDENING

Preparing your Garden for Winter

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

Your garden changes with the seasons, and it’s always important to do your best to help things adapt. Certain plants can find it a lot harder to get the nutrients they need and others have to prepare for dormancy. Be sure to remove any dead plants, withered flowers or darkened stems, so that you can eliminate any disease or insects that can lay eggs or infest the area during the colder seasons. Take a weekend out to mend anything that needs fixing or to box in raised beds. Scoop up any autumn leaves around the garden in order to create an all natural resource for your plants. These can be left in bags or bins to decompose throughout the winter in secure conditions and can eventually be used as a method of nourishing your soil. Always keep pests at bay as much as possible and call in pest control if you need a little extra help, as creepy crawlies can really take their toll on your plant life.

snowy blanket, and a lot of extra weight for delicate flowers and branches, having a layer of snow can create a protective barrier by insulating the soil. We may not even see snow this year, but it’s good to know what to expect when you’ve put a lot of effort into your garden. There are many different ways to care for all kinds of flower breeds, but it is important to learn the differences between them, so always make sure you do your research. Are you Looking at Secondary Schools?

LEARNING Supplied by: Celia Osborne Numberworks’n’words

So, settled in a new class with a new teacher, and it’s not going to change for some time yet ….. phew! BUT, parents always need to think ahead. Year 6 children are thinking about moving on. Many already know where they want to go and some will be sitting entrance tests. It’s an exciting nerve wracking time. Remember, open evenings only give a taste and many schools put on fun displays and entertainments to entice you. If you can, see the school in action – what does it feel like? Do the lessons look interesting? How do your ‘tour operators’ come across? You can often tell a lot about the school from whether their pupils seem interested and engaged and are willing to answer your questions. How will the children be organised, streamed or not? That might make a difference. What about your year 5 or year 4 child? is it too soon to be starting thinking about next steps? That depends. I suggest parents of year 5 children should be popping into the school open days with or without their children.

for the high achievers which should push them on almost as fast as a grammar school. Remember, education is never lost. It’s always worth giving your child that little bit more! Pop in for a free assessment and trial lesson to 152 Ewell Road, KT6 6HE T: 0208 399 1234 E: surbiton@ numberworks.com

What about selective schools? Many parents and children want to try for selective schools. If that’s the case with you, it’s worth thinking about this as far back as year 4. Remember these schools are very selective, your child needs to be bright and enjoy school work. To stand a chance of getting in your child should be towards the top of their class now and even then, successful applicants will probably have put in a lot of extra at home. Often though, children don’t like going through workbooks with Mum and Dad – that’s where NumberWorks’nWords comes in. If started in year 4 or early in year 5, we encourage children to develop their skills without heartache. We know the curriculum inside out and what your child will be expected to achieve at different ages. We help children get even better at what they are already good at, but also help them excel in areas they were less sure. What’s more children enjoy what we have to offer. BUT if your child doesn’t get a place at that selective school, it won’t have been for nothing. That extra work done at NumberWorks’nWords will have put them in good stead for secondary school anyhow. It might ensure they get placed in the classes 21

SPECIAL FEATURE

Autumn is Coming!

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

With the gradual falling leaves and cooler weather, many of us can find joy in everything to do with October. We can start to cool off, bust out the comfy jumpers and plan the perfect Halloween party! Make the most of the current atmosphere in the following ways: Appreciating the outside Why not take a brisk walk or head to Richmond park and see what wildlife you can spot? Take the family, take your partner or just be one with yourself for a while as you roam around for a few hours. Bring a lunch, bring some sketching equipment, or whatever you need to get to writing, bring your ipod and headphones or just bring some enjoyable company along on your ventures. It can be quite inspiring to head outside and soak up some sights, sounds, smells and general scenes - especially when you have writer’s block or feel like you need a different point of view whilst you do your art. You can even use this setting as a place to do yoga or practice your cardio. Why not participate in a local photography trail or historical walking tour (see what dates and times suit you with Kingston Tour Guides in our Local History section!)? This is a great way to learn about the stories behind where you live and meet new friends in the process. Or, you could take a good camera/ keep plenty of space free in your phone to stock up on some gorgeous still life and architectural images. Nourish your portfolio

22

or expand your instagram content with some lovely close up shots of nature. Host a Party for family and friends Whether you’re hosting a spooktacular Halloween party or a simple family barbecue - make the most of the pre-winter. Gather round a nice bonfire or grill with the ones you love, some good food and great music or have a picnic in the park and host a family sports day if it’s not too cold. If you’re looking to throw the best Halloween do ever this year - the key is in the playlist and the decoration! You can’t always determine how much of a success your special events will be or if everything’s going to go to plan without breaking the bank - but no one ever anticipates the worst when they walk into a decked-out, monster house with a lot of promise. Having something for everyone when it comes to music means no one will be left unsatisfied, so really put some time into forming a great list of tunes. The easiest way in this day and age is to run your music through Youtube or services like Spotify and Google Play - as long as you have a decent docking station to blare it out, or even just run it through your TV, you’ll be set. Creating a playlist, hitting shuffle and meeting all your guest’s expectations with some old and new favourites immediately lifts spirits! It

helps to have a killer costume (remember, creativity is important, not cost!), and a great spread, with plenty of drink options, but guaranteed - good company, good music and a real feel of attending a proper event, not just hanging out at home with a couple of balloons blown up really skyrockets people’s opinions in a positive way. Take advantage of this season’s best and brightest Treat yourself to some new clothes so that even if you end up feeling a little run down now that the summer’s gone, you’re looking your best, boosting your confidence and getting out and about. Why not head into the Bentall’s centre and see what sales are on? Post Summer, there may be a lot of stock to be cleared, as well as some fab options for the coming seasons. Autumn brings with it some really flattering looks and hues, as well as some wonderful fruits and vegetables for when you’re at home cooking. See what’s in season right now at your local greengrocer or supermarket, as this time of year usually produces delicious corn on the cob, apples and of course pumpkins and other squash. Try your hand at a homemade pumpkin pie! This doesn’t always have to be a delicious addition to Thanksgiving feasts, it can be a sweet, spiced addition to your Halloween spread when cut into small slices, and you can keep the outer part of your fresh pumpkins for jack-o-lanterns. Another idea to make use of the delicious vegetables in season is to foil wrap fresh corn on the cob and place it on the BBQ alongside your meats and fruit kebabs. It gives it a lovely flavour, especially with a little bit of real butter. Create some homemade caramel/

23

chocolate apples for your BBQ quests, firework displays in early November or just as a snack for the kids at your next party. A fun idea is to dunk your apples in melted chocolate or homemade caramel, then once the coating dries, let your children add scary pumpkin faces to them with some writing icing. There are plenty of fun ways to “spook up” your party snacks with what’s in the cupboard, so have a look online and see what tips you can find.

Maintenance Throughout Autumn

HOME Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

Use simple methods to keep your home in shape throughout the weather changes. Working in your favour is the slight decrease in insects flying in through the window, however there is still plenty to keep track of and the welcoming sight of creepy crawlies that want to take shelter. Here are some ideas on how to keep on top of things as much as possible: Sort through your drawers and wardrobes By sorting through your clothes you’ll be able to check you’re keeping the moths at bay, and you can determine what you need for your winter collection, which will free up a lot of space. If you’ve got anything valuable hiding at the back of your closet, why not start selling things online and earn a little extra money for Christmas shopping? Moving things around Is your furniture just how you like it, or could you use a little bit of feng shui? Figure this out before you start your inital cleaning jobs, as you may find things work better with a little more order. Change things up and see how it makes you feel, you could surprise yourself or make more room for things like indoor exercise and having guests over. Check on the exterior The absolute first thing party guests and distant relatives will spot when visiting is your front garden or balcony, so why not make a conscious effort to sweep, scrub, declutter and adorn the place on the outside to create a warming, welcoming atmosphere for everyone. Clear out the kitchen waste From the medicine cupboard to the pantry, you’ll probably realise you have out of date medicines and expired foods, filling cupboards that could allow for fresh stock and replacement medicines. You won’t want to track down pills and syrups when needed, only to find they are out of date. Clean the bathroom – and really clean it!

29

As well as a nice wipe down, the mere removal of clutter is something you should check on every so often, as many people leave empty shampoo bottles and old razors around, forgetting to throw them away. While you’re at it, scrub that tub, replace your shower curtain and regrout the tiles, to really make it a squeaky clean sanctuary again.
