LOCAL BUSINESS
This month we are talking to Diana Jordan of “Dealing with Divorce”
Supplied by: Diana Jordan
Q1: Hi Diana, could you please tell our readers a little about Dealing with Divorce? A1: It’s the place to go before engaging a solicitor, though I demystify legal gobbledegook and save people money at any point on their divorce journey. My main office is in Teddington and I also see clients in Weybridge, but I work with people all over the country by phone and Skype. Q2: How long have you been in this line of business? A2: About ten years. Before that I had my own practice as a solicitor but our adversarial legal system doesn’t work well for family law. Solicitors will only see one party and push to get the best deal for their client which is divisive. I like to see both parents, together if possible, and help them work out what’s best for the whole family.
use the court to continue their abuse and the proceedings can be acrimonious and devastating.
Q3: What do you enjoy most about working in your field?
Q6: What is the most common problem encountered in your line of work?
A3: I enjoy helping upset and confused clients to feel clearer and calmer. I also like to empower people to stay in control of their divorce, and costs, by helping them do their own legal paperwork.
A6: Clients often come to me when they’ve sacked their solicitor after spending thousands of pounds (sometimes £20,000 or more) on legal fees for very little progress. I could have got them to that point for a fraction of the cost, which is heartbreaking when they’ve no money left for essential elements of their divorce.
Q4: What kind of services does Dealing with Divorce offer? A4: I help couples who want to separate amicably to make a plan for their divorce, and a parenting plan for their children. Because of my background as a children lawyer my first priority is always the children of parents who are separating. I also work with individuals who are in court proceedings and don’t have a solicitor, or need specialised help with children issues.
Q7: Do you have any special offers/ promotions on at the moment?
Q5: Who are your usual clientele?
Q8: What is the best way for readers to get in touch with you?
A5: Parents who want the best outcomes for their children, and people who are not comfortable with seeing a solicitor or are worried about the fees. And, sadly, clients who are separating from narcissists or controlling partners; such people are able to
A7: My book, “A Better Way of Dealing with Divorce: A guide for parents who want to keep out of court, and save their money and sanity” has just been published and I have a special launch offer of £9.99 until 16 September (usually £14.99).
A8: They can visit my website: dealingwithdivorce.co.uk, or facebook. com/DealingwithDivorce, email diana@ dealingwithdivorce.co.uk or ring me on 01932 843434.

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY
THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: CHARITY Anne Blanche - Carers UK
Community Matters Last month I was privileged to write about young carers in Kingston and the fantastic support they are getting from Kingston Carers Network and the public. This month I hope to reach those of you who, like me, provide care for a family member or friend on a VOLUNTARY basis. Many people do not realise they are “carers”.
There is a wealth of information “on-line” if you have the resources. Authorities tend to ignore or forget many carers are struggling financially and also do not always have the time, skills, knowledge or strength to use this technology. Equally it is difficult for most carers to get out to go to meetings or social or consultation events because of the constraints of responsibilities and stresses of full time caring with little or no support for respite. In these instances the voices of some carers are not always heard, only the views of those with the ability to get out and participate in meetings and other events are taken into account.
Ask yourself:Do you get more than 4 hours uninterrupted sleep? Even when you plan a holiday or outing, do you actually get time to go? When did you last sit down to a hot meal undisturbed and enjoy it at leisure? Do you spend more time caring for someone else than you do for yourself?
The national organisations can be particularly useful. They have free telephone helplines and can put you in touch with trained volunteers (who are or have been carers too) as “ buddies”. This helps when you are really stressed and just need someone to talk to or “sound off”.
Caring roles and responsibilities creep up on us and change over long periods. So do the effects on us as we, too, grow older and less able. There is help out there locally with organisations like Kingston Carers Network. Help and support is also available from large national organisations, such as Carers UK and Carers Trust. They provide free helplines, advice, information as well as befriending services and carrying out research and campaigning for better services, recognition and support at Government level.
If you wish to contact me for details of where to get help or, if you are an organisation or small group and would like me to come to give a short talk call: 020 8546 2572 or e-mail: anne.blanche@ carersuk.net
How do you learn about and access all these services and advice?
The organisation I work for, Carers UK, has an enormous range of help, advice information and support services and can be contacted on-
Sometimes through your GP or Social Services. That is IF they are aware you are a carer. You can register, be assessed in your own right for YOUR needs and be kept informed. You may also be given a “carers Passport” which will help to make sure you are fully involved in the care of your relative/ friend. Carers UK and Carers Trust have carried out research into how this scheme is operating over the whole country and it shows it is patchy and of varying standards. This is one of the issues they will shortly be taking up with the Government to ensure national schemes and national standards.

Fantastic Results in His First Season of Racing Despite Some Mishaps
Supplied by: Crystal Law
Bond’s first article in March described how he won the competition ‘want2race’ and the prize was a fully funded season of racing in the Ginetta GRDC 2017 series. He has just finished his final race at Brands Hatch. If points were awarded for the championship, he would have finished 3rd overall despite two non-race finishes. Bond gives his summary of the season: ‘I never thought I would be a racing driver, let alone win a competition to be one. It was a dream come true when I was announced as the 2017 want2race winner. Ginetta, who runs the series, were always on hand to direct us when needed, everyone racing in the GRDC are novices with no prior racing experience so sometimes we were a bit clueless. Every race that I finished, I was on the podium, a huge success for my first season of racing and plenty of silverware for the cabinet. I did however have two DNF’s (did not finish) at Snetterton in Norwich. The first was caused by a blown fuse to the ignition module at the end of lap 1 and the the second was due to a huge crash into the barriers at turn 1 whilst trying to avoid a driver who had spun out. The accident was painful not only physically but financially.
Nevertheless, I got back on my feet, put the bad weekend behind and went to Silverstone with my head high. I could say that I managed almost everything possible as a racing driver in just my first season: trophies, great racing, accidents & DNF’s, fines for being late to briefings, the list goes on. But the most important thing is that I had an amazing time. All my race reports can be found online at www.performancecars.co and you can also watch my race vlogs on YouTube at ‘PerformanceCars’. For anyone wanting to be a racing driver, whether you are a track day regular or it has been your life long dream, I highly recommend that you do so. It is enjoyable, exciting and you will never forget your time in a racecar. A big thanks to want2race, all my sponsors, family & friends, without your support I would not have these memories. I have been asked hundreds of times about my future in racing, my answer is that I would love to continue and pursue the dream of racing at Le Mans, but budget is always going to be the deciding factor.’

POLICE ADVICE
September 2017
Supplied by: Alison McWinnie - MET Police
Kingston is in for an absolute treat; the Metropolitan Police Choir is coming to town! Do join us on 21st October for an amazing and fun concert. Admission free but booking essential by emailing kingstonnhw@gmail. com. Early booking advisable as this will be a popular event. The use of Body Worn Video (BWV) cameras for Kingston Police was launched on Monday 21st August. The introduction of BWV will see the following benefits; •Increasing the use of technology within the criminal justice system for more efficient and effective justice for victims •Greater transparency of policing; improving the investigation of complaints • Making stop and search more accountable to communities
•Use your garage or park in well-lit, wellpopulated and overlooked areas.
•Video captures events in a way that can’t be represented on paper
•Use car parks that have parking attendants and ones with Park Mark accreditation.
•Offenders are more likely to plead guilty, if they know they have been recorded; potentially speeding up the criminal justice process
•Remove your valuables. Even bags, jackets, cases and toys have a value to a thief. •Remove loose change from view. •Remove electronics such as sat-navs. You should also remove any holders or chargers and wipe clear suction cup marks. Any evidence could encourage a thief to look further. Consider buying another means of holding your device such as a weighted mat holder.
BWV will be incident specific and will not be used to indiscriminately record people. Crimewise there has been a spate of thefts from motor vehicles on the borough. Most theft from motor vehicles is opportunistic. Whilst this can involve forced entry to vehicles, it is surprising just how many cars are left unlocked. This might be as a result of forgetfulness or incorrect use of key fobs. You can reduce the risks by following some simple advice: •Make sure you have locked your vehicle and your windows are closed too. Manually test your car door to ensure it is locked before you leave it.
8
•If your car has a wireless key system, keep your keys well away from windows etc. where they can be picked up by the remote reading device the thieves use. You can wrap your Car Key in Kitchen Foil which should stop it being read and you can purchase a Faraday Pouch for your Car keys or your Credit Cards. Stay safe and have a wonderful September!

Summer highs Those hazy days of summer have been anything but lazy for cyclists in the borough. July saw Love Kingston team up with Go Cycle Kingston, Halfords, schools and organisations across the borough to pedal their way to fundraising victory in the lead up to the Prudential Ride London-Surrey 100. A programme of static bike challenges was developed to promote our 20 riders in the RideLondon sportif and cycling in the borough. These fun and engaging community events were organised at Chessington Community College, Kingston Grammar School, Educare Small School, Christ Church New Malden, Queens Promenade and Guildhall to raise money and awareness of Love Kingston plus publicise cycling activity in the borough. Bikes, prizes and equipment were kindly donated by Halfords to some of the events while the Go Cycle team and Dr Bike assisted at others. Love Kingston volunteers kept track of times and distances reached and winners of the furthest distance covered in one minute were presented with prizes. The Mayor, Cllr Julie Pickering is lending her support to Love Kingston this year, so she naturally wanted to join in, only to become the winning female at Chessingston Community College with a distance of 0.71km in 60 seconds!

Momentum children’s charity, based in Kingston upon Thames, is thrilled to have won a Gold Medal for the second year running for its dedicated Momentum Garden at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. Gardens and outside spaces have always featured greatly in Momentum’s work, with the charity having designed and constructed hospital play areas, as well as gardens for sick children in their homes. Momentum’s co-founder Bianca Effemey said: “We are so thrilled to have won gold for a second year running for our peaceful Momentum garden at Hampton Court. ‘Go Gold’ for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month this September
Yvonne Winborn - Momentum
Momentum children’s charity will be encouraging people to ‘Go Gold’ and fundraise to help the charity continue its support of children with cancer across SW London and Surrey. Since 1978 the gold ribbon and gold light have been international symbols representing the world’s youngest cancer patients and honouring their courageous struggle against childhood cancer. Ten children are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK. That amounts to almost 4,000 children whose families will go through what is undoubtedly the most heart-wrenching time of their lives. This is where Momentum can help. The charity supports the entire family through that long and gruelling journey, with emotional and practical support, which includes counselling, trips and treats, music and play therapy and respite breaks at its two holiday homes in the New Forest and on its canal boat ‘Moments on the River’.

Bake some cupcakes and decorate them with gold sprinkles and sell them at work/school. - Hold a gold-themed mufti day at work/ school. Encourage everyone to wear a gold item of clothing or accessory and have some sparkly fun.
The Wood family from Kingston, who have been supported by Momentum throughout their youngest daughter Daisy’s cancer treatment, are now also in turn supporting the charity during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
- Buy and wear a Momentum Golden Ribbon to show your support of CCAM.
Mum Katie said: “It’s hard to put into words how much Momentum has supported us over the past year. It has been quite incredible and we are so grateful for everything the charity has done for us.” In addition to receiving emotional support, music therapy sessions, a trip on the charity’s canal boat and a break to one of the holiday homes have all helped to ease the unimaginable strain of having a child with cancer. Momentum’s co-founder Bianca Effemey said: “It costs around £10,000 for our Family Support Team to support approximately 150 families every month, so our Golden Goal is

William of Wykeham
LOCAL HISTORY Supplied by: Mike Seigel - Kingston Tour Guides
When I first moved to Kingston, more than thirty years ago, I was intrigued to see Wykeham’s coat of arms prominently displayed near the riverside in the centre of town. Having enjoyed four years at New College, Oxford, founded in 1379 by William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester, I was used to seeing his emblem all over the college – as well as on all the crockery in the Dining Hall! I began some enquiries as to his association with Kingston – and drew a blank! In none of my books on either Wykeham or the College itself could I find any mention of Kingston, nor could any of the learned Oxford academics I asked provide an answer. It was not until I trained to be a Kingston Tour guide in 2012 that I discovered the (supposed!) connection, centring round the Bishop’s Palace and the pub, at that time still called “The Bishop out of Residence”. The received wisdom was that Wykeham had been responsible for having a palace built here, but that he never actually lived in it, preferring an alternative at Esher. However, recent research suggests that there was a bishop’s residence in Kingston dating back to 1202, known later as “Bishop’s Hall”, and that Wykeham inherited this property – among others. It was common practice at the time for bishops to own several sizeable residences, always known as “palaces”, and the diocese of Winchester was so large that the bishops would have required the necessary accommodation for themselves and their retinue as they travelled round it. It cannot therefore be stated categorically (despite the recent name for the pub) that Wykeham never did use the palace at Kingston and furthermore the dates under his name are incorrect. These state 1376 to 1404. The latter is known to be the date of
his death, but the former bears no relation to anything in his life – in fact it was at the time when he had fallen out of favour with the king, Edward III. More likely the first date should read either 1366 (the year he was elected to the See of Winchester) or 1367 (when he was consecrated). Yet Wykeham remains a key figure of the late fourteenth century, a famous churchman interested in education and the founder of Winchester and an Oxford college. He was also a key player at court for much of his adult life, and, when in favour, gave important advice to both Edward III and his successor, Richard II. One might go so far as to liken him to the advisors and spin-doctors of the current political scene, and therefore it is perhaps not surprising to find a little bit of “spin” surrounding his connections with Kingston. If you are interested in learning more about the fascinating history of our town, why not join one of our tours, led by specially trained volunteers? New shoes, new uniform, new pencil case, are you ready for the new school year?
LEARNING Supplied by: Celia Osborne Numberworks’n’words
So new school clothes have been purchased and the pencil case shop has been done – is that all you need for the start of term? For many the answer is “yes”, but for many there’s a niggling, “well, I would like my son or daughter to get better at ____(fill in the blank), this year.” New Goals Maybe it was the maths that caused the problem last year. Not such a great report, or suggestions that your son needed to get quicker at number bonds, be more confident with word problems, get better at algebra or just achieve a better grade as year 6 sats, GCSEs or entrance exams approach. Maybe your daughter just finds spelling hard, or always gets full marks in spelling tests, but just loathes writing and does ‘as little as she can get away with.’
where you as parents discuss your child’s needs and we assess their maths or English according to National Curriculum levels and their school age. After that, children are generally keen for us to help. They realise that they have actually enjoyed the relaxed supportive atmosphere in our centre and already discovered that they can do something that they thought was hard. An hour or two per week of structured work targeted towards those skills they need to improve can work wonders.
What can I do to help? Not many kids are total academic all rounders, but we parents often think that a little bit of extra effort on our part will do the trick. Can we just work on those times tables and number bonds for 10 minutes 3 times a week at breakfast? Make sure that they read aloud to us daily or purchase a beautiful note book and get some independent writing done every day? Could we be around more to help with the homework and make sure our child revises properly for maths tests? Sometimes this does the trick, but so often good intentions fade, other things get in the way, or the child in question just isn’t very helpful! Can I get someone else to help? That’s where NumberWorks’nWords comes in. We offer a free introductory session,

GARDENING
September Gardening Tips
Supplied by: Janet Bacon
September still retains the heat of summer in the ground but the days are getting shorter. With the addition of moisture, this makes the autumn one of our best planting seasons as the roots of plants put in now will have time to grow before the cold winter weather. Relocate shrubs and small trees to enhance your garden for autumn colour As a general rule, autumn-colouring plants need sunlight to really show off their colour. If you can plant your shrubs/trees so that they are backlit by the sun, colours can take on the brilliance of a stained-glass window. Some suggestions for adding autumn colour to your garden are:Cotinus ‘Grace’ is a large shrub but it can be kept in bounds by stooling (cutting the old stems to near ground level), has coppery orange autumn foliage: or oak leaved Hydrangea quercifolia, a shrub with deep red leaves following panicles of white florets. For dazzle and elegant leaf shape, however, it is hard to beat Japanese maples. Acer japonicum ‘Aconitifolium’ (grows slowly to approx. 16ft but can be kept smaller with regular light pruning) has leaves which turn to some of the best reds of any tree, and A. palmatum ‘Sango-kaku’ (coral-bark maple), has leaves which turn yellow.
as the taller varieties are prone to toppling in rain. By including asters and sedum you will help to extend the season for the nectar-feeding insects. Renew Your Lawn This is the perfect time for establishing or growing a new lawn, either putting down new turf, or topping up with seed your existing grass which may have become patchy or thin. Garden centres stock a wide range of seed for all aspects, sun, shade or heavy use i.e. childrens football pitch so you can make sure that your lawn flourishes when next spring comes around. To protect your grass, increase the height of your mower blades through the winter months as grass growth speeds begin to slow. You could even treat yourself to a new lawnmower if your current model doesn’t have a height changing function.
Amelanchiers can be grown as trees or coppiced to produce multi stemmed shrubs and are good for two seasons as they also produce white flowers in spring. Amelanchier fastigiated, or A. alnifolia ‘Obelisk’ produce some fiery autumn tints, with A. x grandiflora ‘Autumn Brilliance’ having good red colouring.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
5 Simple Steps to Getting that Holiday Glow for your First Day Back at Work
Supplied by: Solene Capitolin
We all want to make a good impression and hear how tanned and glowing we look on our first day back at work after the summer, right? However we are not all lucky enough to get away every summer… So, here are a few simple steps to getting that “I just came back from holiday” look. Before make-up, comes looking after your skin. Making sure you exfoliate your skin once a week will ensure that your skin is neat and will minimise your pores. Also no matter your skin type, making sure you moisturise your skin will make the application of makeup easier and more flawless. Moisturising will also reduce some signs of ageing. Step 1- Foundation/Tinted Moisturiser Simply apply whatever you usually wear, but try to be very light with it… A little goes a long way when it comes to applying makeup to your skin and it is all about blending it in. A natural, flawless base will give you the necessary glow. The MAC Lightful C Tinted Moisturiser available at Bentalls, Kingston does a very good job at this. Step 2- Conceal Grab your concealer and lightly conceal any blemishes, and most importantly any bags or discoloration under the eye. Go for a few shades lighter than your foundation if you want to look extra energised. If you have dry skin, try the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer available at Space NK, Kingston. Step 3- Eyebrows One of the most important steps when 20
wanting to look fresh is your eyebrows. Firstly, making sure they are neat is important, whether you are doing them yourself or getting them done. Then you will need to lightly fill them in by using a pencil or a powder and by following your natural shape, making sure they are not too harsh. Step 4- Eyes If you don’t already have one, invest in a white eyeliner to line your waterline. White eyeliner will simply make you look refreshed and awake, it’s a modern day miracle. It is also such an easy and quick step. Next, apply a small amount of mascara, trying to avoid creating any clumps. Step 5- Highlight and Bronzer The finishing touches… Grab your bronzer and a powder brush and apply the bronzer to your cheeks (up to your forehead, into your cheekbones and onto your jawline). This will slim down your face and make you glow! Last but most definitely not least, apply some shimmery highlighter to your brow bone and just on top of your cheeks. HEALTH & WELLBEING
How to get the conversations we have with ourselves all day, working for us not against.
Supplied by: Claire Dyson - Untangle Your Life
As we go back to school and work, refreshed and energised after time off, here is some theory many clients have found enlightening and helpful. Dr Eric Berne suggests there are three voices within us: Child: As infants, our focus is getting our needs met and we express this freely and vocally. If Mum or Dad goes out we fear they won’t return and scream the house down. If our bottle runs dry we fear we’ll never be fed again (more tears). Once we learn Mum and Dad will return and food, warmth and comfort will come when needed the intensity of our reaction calms. We know we can survive these experiences using self-soothing skills learned from our parents, we develop resilience. As a grown-up, your inner child is the one having the instant, intense, knee-jerk reaction in a situation. Parent: Whilst we love the joy and energy of a child, very early on parents and caregivers seek to modify “undesirable” behaviour. We pick up “this is the way it is done” and with it the struggle between what we want (child) and what we “should” do (parent). To begin with parents enforce these rules, later each child creates a parent in their head, starts “policing” themselves and brings the struggle inside. If as grown-ups we follow rules like “don’t answer back” when standing up for ourselves is entirely warranted or “mustn’t bother people” when we need help this causes an uncomfortable “see-saw” between inner child and parent and much stress. Adult: The objective part of us that appraises a situation, sees it for what it is and decides
21
in the here and now based on our values, not “autopilot” rules nor our knee-jerk childish impulses, what to do. This voice mediates between parent and child but is often drowned out by the other two. Listen for the adult. Think of it like University Challenge where each team member gets their say but only the Captain (the adult) gets to use the mic. Take a short pause to listen to your needs (your inner child) and the “shoulds” then reflect and decide how you’ll act so you’re not reacting and are less likely to over-react. Making a choice brings peace rather than being at the mercy of the rules put in us by others.

SPECIAL FEATURE
Back to School Basics The Summer holidays are sadly behind us and the weather is slowly taking a turn. Other than planning a happy halloween and preparing for Christmas holidays, it can be hard to keep the excitement up and stay high-spirited. However, the move towards a new educational term in a brand new year/school doesn’t have to be full of stress and anxiety. These feelings can affect both children and their parents, but as long as you prepare early and follow these tips, change will hopefully be a positive thing and a pleasant experience.
Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
Figure out important dates/upcoming breaks Find out what school holidays and term dates are for the next year. You should be able to find these online. This will help you plan your short breaks, summer vacations, important times to hit the stores and special occasions without leaving anything to the last minute. Help the kids get into work mode With those lingering sunny days and stuffy classrooms, some children can be a little reluctant to focus on schoolwork right away. They may have been split up from their friends or may have difficulty adjusting to new surroundings - so give them a helping hand by setting goals, creating fun learning activities at home and by offering them support whenever you can. It may even give them a boost to reward their high-scoring tests or well-graded essays… just be sure you don’t make them feel inferior against siblings when they struggle, perhaps by using runner-up rewards or identifying the issue and trying again.
catch up on with their friends post-holiday (nothing wrong with that!), encourage them to save some discussions for their lunch break and between classes and try suggesting a friendly get together with their soon-to-be reunited classmates before the term starts. Let them psyche each other up for the new year and reflect on the summer before they head into school so they’ll feel more ready for what’s coming and less ready to chat for hours on end! Help them with their priorities Create a timetable or get them a whiteboard for their room to make lists of what needs to be done/laid out ready before school starts or what homework has to be crossed off the list and when as the weeks pass. There is nothing worse than a forgotten assignment on deadline day or a lost pair of shoes on a busy morning where people are running late.
Cut down on the chatting
Stay in the know
Although they’ll no doubt have a ton to
Keep a running interest in what they are learning at school. Asking daily (perhaps at the dinner table or over breakfast) what they’ve been studying will show them you are invested in their education and give them a chance to pride themselves on their jobs well done. Not to mention you will feel reassured that they are learning new things and paying attention. Give yourself a break and give them a push to have fun Encourage their hobbies and allow them to take advantage of some time to themselves in the evenings or on weekends. Maybe

they want to learn an instrument or do some painting - maybe they just want a few hours on the computer or a short videogame session? Whichever is applicable, take advantage - you need to de-stress too! Put your feet up, enjoy your favourite shows, or take a nice long bath while they take a break from all the additional calculating, memorizing and essay writing they’ve been trying to readjust to. A hobby can even become a career one day, you never know! Just be sure to limit their time in front of screens…. All natural energy-boosts help to motivate Liven up lunchboxes with a little more fruit and veg and a little less carbs and refined sugars. This will prevent those afternoon crashes and keep them replenished and refreshed on those warmer days of slumping at their desks and trying to stay focused. This applies to adults too, do yourself a favour when trying to stay work-focused or keeping your energy levels high for the day. If the weather does stay particularly warm, as a few recent years have shown, remember to keep a cooling block in packed lunches, or give them a proper cool-down solution by freezing a bottle of water or squash overnight and they’ll have a beverage that stays cool to last the whole day. Just make sure the bottle doesn’t sit between their school books and make the pages soggy! Stay hydrated Always the best solution for everything, from a healthy diet to great skin, drinking plenty of water will help kids in the heat, keep bodies healthy and in turn keep external appearances in check, which will improve overall confidence. You could even freeze some lemon and lime slices and drop them into their water for a zesty twist by the time the water cools down, or add some cucumber for a vitality boost and an ultimate refreshment. This is a much better equivalent to sugary drinks.
23
Planning ahead for yourself Make things easier on yourself as well. Pack lunches the night before instead of the morning of; lay out your clothes for the next day and have your little ones do the same (you may even find a dirty school shirt or lost tie in the process which will be better sorted early on); mix up their lunches to keep them from complaining and incorporate wraps, pittas, flatbreads or pasta salads as well as the standard ham sandwich on white/ brown bread. You could even make your own lunches ahead of time to save questioning/ fussing about when you get hungry.

Help Around the House This time of year can be hard on your home. Not only are people getting caught up in those messy school runs, which can leave things looking a bit upside-down; but we’re all coming back from holidays and settling back into our everyday jobs at the same time.
HOME Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
Of course, if your job is taking care of little ones, you’ll still be used to running around trying to keep things tidy throughout the summer break anyway... This is made all the more difficult when timelines need to be considered and there is less chance for those heading out to work to pitch in as well. Make things easier on your home by ensuring that the “all hands on deck” motto gets put into action. Although those with incredibly long work hours may not be able to see to every inch of the house with a scrubbing brush, there are still those lazy sundays to work with, as well as evening pitch-ins like helping with the dishes after dinner and throwing a load of laundry in the wash not to mention the quick run over with a vaccuum can make a big difference. Find new methods of storage in order to keep things under control. Anything from cuddly-toy hammocks that can be hung overhead, plastic containers that slide under beds, or the age-old solution: throw it out! Don’t add to the stress of starting a new year at school by throwing away your kids’ best memories, but take some time to figure out what actually gets used or what clothes still fit. If anything is in good condition you could even do your bit and donate it to charity or try to sell it online and potentially make some money to buy new, more useful replacements for all the unnecessary junk. Reward systems are always a way to get a little more input from the younger family members. For example, when they complete their weeks jobs (as shown by homemade rota systems) they recieve pocket money/ treats/get to pick their favourite meals to have on the day of completition, and so on. Its fun, its effective and what child doesn’t 29
like to create a little competition with their siblings? It could even teach them valuable lifeskills in the process for when they have their own homes to take care of. This can even be put in motion among adult housemates just as a means of keeping things fair.

Always Try To Support Your Independent Travel Agent

I have worked really hard over the last few weeks arranging holiday quotes for clients, many who really do not know where they want to go and are expecting a last minute deal. There are no such things as last minute deals anymore, and what is left are flight times and hotels that no one wants for one reason or another. I like to think I do a

Pocket Living Brings New Homes to Kingston, Launching September
ESTATE & LETTINGS Supplied by: Romy Levin - Pocket Living
The 26 one and two bedroom homes on Cowleaze Road are due to launch for sale in early September.
Image of show flat interior at Sail & Juxon Street SE11
External CGI Howarth Tompkins, Stirling Prize winners for Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre, have designed a new collection of homes on Cowleaze Road, creating a quiet cul-de-sac minutes from Kingston Station, the bustling town centre and the river. 21 one bedroom Pocket apartments for first time buyers and 5 two bedroom Pocket Edition apartments are being built by innovative housing developer Pocket Living, their first scheme in Kingston. The handsome four storey brick building, named Cowleaze Road KT2, will provide a spacious roof terrace for all residents to enjoy and well-designed landscaping in the communal areas. Striking super-graphics guide you around the interior and there is ample secure cycle storage. The apartments have been thoughtfully designed with fully fitted kitchens, wet-room bathrooms and clever storage solutions. Pocket Living has been building compact homes across London for well over a decade, their homes are carefully designed from the inside out to suit the way Londoners live today. Thanks to spacious communal areas, like the fantastic roof terrace at Cowleaze Road KT2, homeowners can socialise with 37
their neighbours and quickly form a strong community. One bedroom Pocket homes are sold at a 20% discount to the local market price because they’re just for first time buyers. The apartments are for local people to own and enjoy living in, not for investors, enabling young professionals from the local area to put down roots and get onto the property ladder. The limited collection of spacious Pocket Edition apartments are available without restriction to anyone from across London, giving more people the chance to enjoy living in a Pocket building. The homes at Cowleaze Road KT2 will be launching for sale in early September, with the building completing in summer 2018. To buy one of these homes, register at pocketliving.com or call the Pocket Living Sales team on 0203 713 9278.

An Evening with Sir Michael Parkinson
COMPETITION REVIEW
Sir Michael Parkinson, a true broadcasting legend and certified national treasure, will celebrate some of the defining moments of his tenure as one of the most recognisable and widely sought after interviewers of the 20th and 21st centuries, by hosting a series of shows at theatres throughout the UK this Autumn. In conversation with his son Mike and showing highlights from the Parkinson archive, these new theatre shows will provide a unique opportunity to get an intimate, entertaining and informative look at Sir Michael’s remarkable journey from humble upbringings in a Yorkshire mining town, to becoming one of the most familiar faces on television, whilst reliving the greatest events from a show that for many defined their Saturday night.
An Evening With Sir Michael Parkinson (Sunday 11th March 2018) will be a night of reflective and celebratory entertainment, which will undoubtedly bring audiences the very best of a man who has shaped the perception of showbusiness, popular culture and recent history for years to come. (Photo by Jane Brown)
In a career spanning several decades, Sir Michael Parkinson was responsible for interviewing over 2000 of the most important figures of our time, including Nelson Mandela, Marlon Brando and Mohammed Ali, to name but a few of the plethora of individuals who have shaped our cultural landscape.
