Domestic violence - It’s not black and white when you can’t see the black and blue. It’s a fact - 1 in 4 women will experience at least one incident of domestic violence in their lifetime. The answer may seem simple - Leave him or her. Get away. Simple?

COMMUNITY SECTION This month’s Community Person: Dawn Sainsbury - Love Kingston

But it’s not as black and white as you may think. Especially where children are involved. Women who flee domestic violence to live in a refuge often leave behind everything, including extended family, friends, possessions, jobs and security. Women who cannot find a space in refuge face a stark choice between homelessness and destitution, or remaining with an abusive partner. Hestia supports 3 refuges in Kingston – providing a safe place for women and their children away from vulnerability and the opportunity for those involved to make positive life-changing decisions. Hestia offers counselling therapy, support, advice, and much needed solace and space to work out ‘what next?’ Women at the refuges in Kingston are allocated a case-worker and given a personalised support plan, which can include on-going emotional support, support during legal proceedings, help finding new accommodation or support to find new employment or training.

Grants from Love Kingston have already helped purchase art equipment for the Butterfly Project, in addition to toys and after school activities for children, but they need more help. Here’s how your support and donations through Love Kingston could help Hestia: £250 - could provide 25 welcome packs of basic food and toiletries £500 – could fund training events - including courses on Money Matters

The Butterfly Project Support also comes in the form of peer support through the Butterfly Project, pioneered by Hestia Kingston Women’s Aid - which offers much needed friendship and solidarity in very troubled times. As women are placed in refuges away from their own local area to ensure their safety, and often choose to stay nearby once they move on into independent accommodation, providing a peer group which offers friendship and support is an important method of helping women to recover from domestic abuse. Hestia is one of the five local “pathways out 5

POLICE ADVICE Taking care while out Even in a city as busy and crowded as London, incidents of mugging and pickpocketing are still quite low. Knowing how and where criminals who commit these crimes operate will help you avoid falling victim to them. Thieves frequently operate: • • • • •

will be less aware of what is happening around you. • Keep calls in public places as brief as possible, the longer you talk, the more likely you are to be spotted by a potential thief. Looks good enough to grab

At tube stations. At cash machines. In car parks. Around bus stations. In overcrowded areas, especially at rush hour.

Be aware of chain-snatch thieves and keep your jewellery out of sight. Snatch robberies can involve violence or theft. The chance that this will ever happen to you is quite small, but you should be aware of what you can do to keep yourself and your property safe:

Be aware and keep your possessions safe:

• Make sure your jewellery is not visible. • Plan your journey in advance. • Avoid dark or deserted areas late at night. • Be aware of your surroundings and stay alert to what’s going on around you.

• Never leave your bags or other valuables unattended in public places. • Be discreet with your belongings; displaying expensive jewellery or electronic devices, like mobile phones or cameras, could attract unwanted attention. • Don’t make your mobile phone a moving target. Don’t tempt mobile phone thieves, be aware when making a call.

How to get your personal items security marked

Reduce the risk of mobile phone theft by following these simple tips: • Don’t leave your phone on tables in pubs or restaurants. • When you leave a train or tube station don’t use your phone immediately, leave it a while. • Don’t walk and text at the same time, you

There are several ways you can mark your property to help protect your personal items further. If you have any information on stolen goods, report it to the police by calling 101. If it is an emergency dial 999. This page was sponsored by:

Valentine’s Day for Seniors Friday 14th February 2014 is Valentine’s Day, the next official celebration in our calendar. For some seniors, Valentine’s can be a lonely day. This may be due to a marriage which ended in divorce, the loss of a spouse or a spouse suffering from long term illness or dementia. There are also single older people that have never married because they may have spent their life caring for their parent. As a person gets older, dating is mainly about companionship and finding a well-rounded person that can make you happy.

CARING IN THE COMMUNITY SECTION Supplied by: Veronica Miller

“We all age, and as we do, we will all have to find qualities that make us feel attractive underneath the surface and beyond our youthful looks.” (Unknown quote) Obviously family and friends can make the difference to an elderly person’s life this Valentine’s Day. We just need to take time out of our busy schedule to celebrate the special people in our life that we love and respect. For those with one or more parent who is elderly, enjoy a Valentine’s Day activity with them, which could also involve any grandchildren. Invite your family over for some Valentine’s Day fun activities. This could include making a Valentine’s Day card for an elderly loved one, followed by baking with the grandchildren and concluding with a meal. Another way to celebrate Valentine’s Day is to ask your loved ones, or neighbour for their favourite recipe. Surprise them with a dish made from the recipe they shared with you. It is important to ensure that you are aware of their dietary needs. For example, if they are a diabetic, make sure any desserts are sugar free. Valentine’s Day can be made special for someone you love or care about by simply spending time with them. This is an excellent social event which can result in uplifting spirits. You can take your favourite senior citizen on an outing of his or her choice, whether it is to church, shopping, a doctor visit, or an activity club. “You don’t stop having fun when you get old; you get old when you stop having fun”. (Rita Ghatourey) Carewatch Kingston shares the view that Valentine’s Day represents many kinds of love between all kinds of people. Carewatch Kingston will be having a tea dance for 11

seniors to celebrate Valentine’s Day to help brighten up the day. If you are interested in coming to our Valentine’s Day tea dance on Friday 14th February 2014, please give us a call on 020 8330 0070 to book in advance for this event. You will need to book in advance to ensure we cater for everyone and take into consideration special dietary needs. Also, if you would like a member of our team to assist you with shopping to purchase a Valentine’s gift for your loved one or preparing a special meal, just give us a call and speak to Jennifer or Seymour. The Queen Anne & Kingston As you will all have noticed, the Ancient Market Place is undergoing refurbishment and we are all looking forward to seeing it in its new exciting form by the end of March.

HISTORY PAGE Supplied by: Mike Seigel

As I wrote in the Christmas edition, the market place dates back to the late 12th century and has been flourishing ever since, adding to the town’s prosperity throughout the centuries. Dominating the market place is the recently re-gilded statue of Queen Anne. Unlike her successor, Queen Victoria, more than a century later and who reigned for so much longer, Anne has very few statues of herself round the country, and so we should feel privileged to have such a splendid one of her in Kingston. Queen Anne was the last Stuart monarch, ruling from 1702 to 1714, and she is probably best remembered for her many failed pregnancies and her large size – the poor lady suffered from gout, dropsy and undoubtedly what today would be called obesity. Yet she was a very conscientious monarch, attending regular meetings of her Privy Council, even on Sundays. It was in her reign that the War of the Spanish Succession was fought against the French, with remarkable victories such as the Battle of Blenheim which led to the queen’s gift to her general, the Duke of Marlborough, to build Blenheim Palace, where nearly two hundred years later Winston Churchill was to be born. This year marks a special one for Queen Anne in life and in death. For it was in her reign, in 1707, that the Act of Union formalised the political link between England and Scotland which comes under threat with the Scottish referendum in September. And it was Anne’s childlessness and her death, three hundred years ago this year, which brought over Prince George of Hanover to become our King 13

George I and establish the dynasty which leads directly to our present royal family with the latest addition of another Prince George. If you are interested in the varied history of our town, why not join one of our tours, led by specially trained volunteers? The walks take place every first Sunday of the month until April, when they take place every Sunday until the end of September. The charge is £4 per adult - or you can arrange a special tour for you and your friends at a time to suit you. For further information please ring 020 8399 0160 or 020 8399 7888. HEALTH AND BEAUTY

When was your last MOT? Quite likely, you remember the month at least, and plan not to miss the next one, right? Imagine a perfect machine - operating just as designed, efficiently producing its own energy. Also repairing and rebuilding itself when needed. This wonderful machine is the human cell. When young and in good health, our cells typically operate as described here - and are often taken for granted, expected to function without our command, let alone payment.

Supplied by: Annerose Adams antioxidant and immune activity, that are present in every form of life. Science has defied the enormous challenge of stabilising these tiny fleeting molecules outside of the human body for the first time.

As we age our cells become less efficient. In today’s threatening world, poor diet, high stress levels and constant bombardment by free radicals and toxins all contribute to the damage and disease of our cells, which end up functioning at a reduced rate. The result? An imbalanced state of overall health, early onset of ageing and increased suffering, especially in later years of life.

This is ASEA - the world’s first and only Redox Signalling Molecule supplement. This comprehensive health activator helps our cells to once again become well- oiled machines, by stimulating the relevant parts of the body to heal themselves from within. ASEA is pure molecules that we drink and spray.

Just as cars require fuel and repairs, as well as that dreaded MOT - so does our body.

It’s 100% non-toxic. Therefore, it is for everyone. From mums and families to antiageing consumers, health-minded individuals to athletes, for speedy recovery and higherlevel performance.

So do our cells! They need the proper fuel if they are to continue to rejuvenate, recover or even heal and replace themselves. Where can this fuel be found?

THIS MOT provides, among others: • the first and only source of balanced, stabilised Redox Signalling Molecules outside the body • support of the vital activity of cellular communication • promotion of an enhanced immune function • protection against radical damage • boost of the body’s own antioxidants by up to 500% • superior support to athletes • supported by research and clinical studies and results • completely native to the body

Almost 2 decades ago, a group of medical professionals and researchers discovered a gaping hole in medical science - the need to find a way of providing humans with a solution that is not only natural, but native to the body. The name of this solution is Redox Signalling Molecules! These reactive molecules act as vital messengers in all body functions. Especially

ASEA is about empowering the body to heal itself - not a cure for conditions or diseases. GARDENING SECTION

Update on Oak Tree Processionary Moth This article is to update you on the Oak Processionary Moth (OPM) problem that is now subject to movement controls of timber and foliage within our area. The problem of the caterpillars defoliating trees including Oaks, Hornbeams and Chestnuts has been known since it was first detected in Richmond in 2006. The introduction of the pest to the UK is being blamed on imported trees from Europe carrying the eggs to us, in Europe the pest was first detected in 2001 in Denmark.

Supplied by: Roger Kerr

Oak trees in Merton, Kingston and Wandsworth that have any surgery on them including removal or crown reductions etc, cannot be removed from your property. This is to control the spread of the winter egg masses that form on the trees. These masses are quite easy to spot along with the “processions” of caterpillars on the branches from April to July. All wood-chip and timber must be left in your garden so if you plan works this winter please bear this in mind. Appointed Forestry Commission contractors may be able to assist in removing this material if it is really required. The caterpillars defoliate the trees quickly but it does not necessarily mean the Oak tree will die. The OPM is common in central and southern Europe but now it has spread to the UK, concerns over the impact of our health are being discussed. The health issues at the moment are centred on skin irritation primarily to tree surgeons rather than the general public, but caution is needed if you spot the nests of eggs. The other effects from the caterpillar hairs are on irritation to the eyes and bronchial tubes affecting breathing. Do not approach or 17

handle the hairy caterpillars or nests. If you are affected by these symptoms, then a course of antihistamines and skin creams is advised. Here are photographs to help you look for the signs of OPM. Roger Kerr RJ Tree Services

Show your love for Kingston Borough on Valentine’s Day by joining in the fundraising activities for Love Kingston Day. On Friday 14th February businesses, shops and individuals across the borough are being asked to help change the lives of thousands of local residents, including homeless people, abused women, families without a meal on the table and troubled teenagers. Love Kingston is led by Kingston Voluntary Action and is a fund of the London Community Foundation. Half of all donations to Love Kingston goes to The Kingston Legacy Fund – with 50% match funding – to create a lasting legacy to help local charity and community projects in the borough. The other half directly supports five local projects who all work on ‘Pathways Out of Poverty’: Hestia, Kingston Foodbank, Kingston Churches Action on Homelessness, Kingston Savers and Oxygen. After all the fundraising events and donations last year over £90,000 was pledged, making a real difference to local charities and the lives of many in the Borough of Kingston upon Thames. “Being part of Love Kingston has really helped us get more publicity for the work we do with disadvantaged young people. The money has helped us run more activities and paid for staff to work with young people who need Oxygen’s help the most”. Young Person from the Oxygen Project “Love Kingston has positively raised our local profile in helping to highlight domestic violence. Clients can get the help and 18

support they need in their recovery from our women’s support group the Butterfly Project. Our project empowers women to change their lives, and by domino effect, also the lives of their children. Thank you for recognising the great need for our continued service to domestic violence survivors.” Butterfly Project Volunteer, Hestia But Love Kingston’s Fundraising Manager, Elaine Miller, wants to make it even bigger and better this year to support more of the thousands of local residents who are being left on the margins of our prosperous borough. Elaine said: “Our borough has wealth and poverty living side by side, with one in three children living below the poverty line in some parts, and times are getting tougher. Love Kingston Day is a chance to have fun with friends or colleagues or give yourself a challenge to raise money. But most of all it’s about the Kingston Borough community coming together on one day to show their support and care for others who are less fortunate.” “We’ve got some big and bold plans for Love Kingston Day to raise even more money and smash this year’s total. We’d love for as many people to get involved as possible in whatever way they can.” Here are just some of the local business

HOME SECTION

Freshen up this February! The winter season is becoming a thing of the past…time for an early spring clean! Most of us have probably removed our Christmas decorations and tidied away any New Year’s aftermath, but why stop there? If you haven’t already given up on those New Year’s resolutions, consider a fresh start for your home too. The more clutter-free space in your house, the more likely you are to keep positive and active- on track to that healthier lifestyle you might have planned on. It always pays to keep an eye on the way things are running so set aside time to run through your list. Here are some tips to start you off:

Supplied by: Leanna Carl

Work your way from the inside Cleaning the inside of your house before you start outside can stop things you’ve just cleaned from getting dirty again. Preparation Invest in those cleaning aids- a good pair of gloves, proper scouring sponges, detergents, maybe even a protective apron for those tough jobs. Bin bags! Never start tidying without a generous amount of bin bags at your disposal (no pun intended) as you don’t want to tire yourself out making unnecessary trips. There may be a lot of mess in one room, so work gradually. Multitasking Why waste your entire weekend on chores? Get things moving by starting up the washing machine whilst you clean the bathroom, for example, then get your next load of laundry in before you hang the wet clothes out to dry. Just don’t overdo it! Repairs If you’re not particularly handy, find someone to take care of those DIY jobs -or, perhaps you’ll find what you need by backtracking through our DIY sections? Make a note of anything that requires a professional, from boiler repairing to electricians. Floors are always last There is nothing worse 20

than vacuuming or mopping and getting the carpets/flooring looking like new, then realising you have some shelf dusting to do or you haven’t changed the bedsheets. You’ll have undone all your hard work, so plan accordingly. Look after your equipment Get a good pail for mopping and scrubbing jobs and clean it out properly when you’re finished. Never leave sponges soaking in water overnight as bacteria thrives in moist environments and stand your broom upright to maintain the bristles and shape. Try and enjoy yourself One of the best tips, as most people will know is to add music! Put on something you really love listening to and feel free to really belt it out whilst you work. It makes the job a lot faster and more enjoyable. OR... If you simply have no time for a spring clean, why not look at your local cleaning services in publications such as Omni Local?

RoboCop If like me, you recall the classic 80’s Robocop then you’ll already have an idea what to expect with the remake. Its been about 27 years since the original trilogy began, and finally the story is being retold - in IMAX! If however you aren’t familiar with the series, the setting is Detroit, Michigan way into the future. We follow the life story of Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) - a devoted husband, father and cop who takes his job very seriously. We witness the struggle to hold on to his old life after he is rebuilt into half man/half machine, following critical injuries in the line of duty. Omnicorp (a multinational conglomerate specialising in robot technology) have been looking for a chance to expand by introducing their technology to the home front. Upon hearing about Alex’s downfall and upcoming inabilities they find their opportunity to show the world what else they have to offer- A part-man, part-robot police officer. The problem is, they’ve forgotten about the human being inside their machine… Featuring big names like Gary Oldman, Samuel L Jackson and Michael Keaton, this is definitely a movie worth seeing; especially if you liked the story back when the original debuted. It’s full of action, drama and perfect for Sci-Fi fans, however it may not be suitable for children under 12 years old.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 I really enjoyed this film, just like I did the first one. It’s full of jokes and silly food puns but it also has quite a moving and dramatic storyline. If you haven’t checked out the original yet, the story was about a crazy inventor named Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) who tried to create a machine that turns water into food, in order to prove his doubtful father (James Caan) wrong about his talent and provide a renewable food resource for the world. Something went wrong during the birth of his creation and the water-to-food machine’s abilities became atmospheric, causing it to rain food. Getting larger and too frequent to control, the food caused destruction and mayhem for the world and had to be destroyed. This film is based on the aftermath. Flint and his friends were forced to leave town. The world is still food-ridden, some of which has mutated into super-food with animal characteristics -due to a still operating, but malfunctioning water-to-food machine; Flint, his girlfriend Sam (Anna Faris) and his friends are teaming up with Flint’s idol Chester V (Will Forte) in order to help the Live Corp Company with their clean-up. Can Flint see through Chester’s alterior motives and help do what’s best for the world? 22

DIY SECTION

Hanging a wooden door Here are our top tips: Equipment Make sure you have all you need, such as a pencil; masking tape; tape measure and screwdriver. You may want to discuss the best methods of trimming etc. whilst purchasing your door.

Supplied by: Leanna Carl

Measurements Check that you know your lengths, heights and widths. Measure the opening and the door. You could measure the door that’s being replaced to tell you what fits. Trimming Your door should have a gap of 2mm on either side, as well as along the top. The gap below the door depends on your carpet or floor. Mark where you need to trim, and plane your door, preferably with an electric plane, as it will create a smooth, even finish. (Note: If you are hanging a hollow door you shouldn’t trim more than 3mm on one side. If more of a trim is required you should trim wood from both sides of the door.) Hinges Make sure your new hinges fit the old ones in the doorframe, or make a mark where the new ones need to be attached and chisel away any extra wood. Screw the hinges into place with a centre screw so that the hinge knuckle faces outwards from the frame. Testing Prop the door up using wedges to determine that the gap at the bottom is correct. Mark the door where the top and bottom hinges sit. Remember that feature and primed doors need three hinges instead of two. Hinging the Door Unscrew the hinges and place them on the door so the pins lay flat. Line up with the marks, then draw around them. Chisel the middles so their depth is the 25

same as the hinge flap. Make sure each hinge fits, with one centre screw each. Hanging the Door Prop up the door again and fix the hinge flaps to the frame. Check the door opens and closes okay, and fix in the screws. If the door sticks, remove the screws and plane the edges. Repeat the test process again. Handles and Latches Mark where the latch needs to go. Hold the latch against the drill bit and mark the depth of the latch using masking tape. Drill through the door to the depth indicated by tape. Insert the latch and draw around it. Hold the latch in position and mark through the hole both sides to show where the handle spindle goes. Drill the hole for the handle spindle and insert the latch. Fix the latch into place and insert the spindle, then screw in the door handle. Finish Timber products should be coated in order to maintain their appearance and lifespan. Find a good wax or oil to give your door a glossy and varnished finish, or add a coat of paint if you prefer. Remember to prime the door first for a better paint job.
