LOCAL BUSINESS
Welcome to our brand new section! – This section is all about the people who are local business owners who support Omni Local, and we would like you to get to know these hard working dedicated local people within our community.
Supplied by: Leanna carl & Jason Gibson - JGSM helps to increase range of motion that in many has started to decrease. I offer 1/2 hour massage sessions to treat tight muscles and joints. We also provide free refreshments.
This month I am talking to Jason Gibson, from JGSM & Feel Good Fridays. Q1: So, Jason, how long have you been in business for yourself? What made you decide to set up on your own? A1: I passed my first massage qualification 4 years ago, and after passing my Sports Massage qualifications at the beginning of 2013 i decided to set up JGSM. I’ve always enjoyed working for myself.
Q7: I think it’s a great idea. Why did you set this up? A7: For me its about giving something back to the community. I’m sure there will be a day when i will be making good use of similar schemes.
Q2: What sort of qualifications do you need to do what you do? A2: As a massage therapist you should have at least a level 3 qualification. Sports and remedial qualifications are level 4 and 5. You should also be registered with one of the governing bodies such as FHT, CNHC of CTHA. Q3: What do you find as your biggest challenge? A3: For any new therapist - finding new clients. I have no shop front to attract passing trade, so it comes down to advertising and word of mouth. Q4: What do you enjoy the most about being your own boss? A4: Being your own boss gives you flexibility. I also make sure to treat my clients the way I would like to be treated myself.
Q8: How can people come along to the Feel Good Fridays?
Q5: Why should people come and see you? A5: The majority come to treat areas of the body that have pain or restricted movement, however, anyone can benefit from a session. Regular treatments keep the body in good shape, with good mobility.
A8: We are based in Eden Street. If you haven’t been before just give us a call. For massages you will need to book a time slot. Q9: Okies, to close, what would be the one tip you would offer to others?
Q6: Moving away from business, please tell me all about your Feel Good Fridays -
A9: To look after your body, as its the only one you have.
A6: Myself and my partner Lindsay (who is a qualified British Wheel of Yoga teacher) launched last September to help over 60’s with their mobility and wellbeing. Lindsay
Please take a look at Jason’s adverts for both Feel Good Fridays and his Remedial Sports Massage services. 4

Mayor of Kingston Ken Smith
COMMUNITY PERSON Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
Councillor Ken Smith was installed as the Mayor of Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames on 5th June 2014 and I had the pleasure of interviewing him for this month’s issue. During the interview we discussed the Mayor’s experiences so far and talked about his hopes and plans for the rest of his term. The Mayor is a remarkable, yet down-toearth gentleman, with a wide knowledge of the Royal Borough’s history and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting him and finding out about his life. The role of Mayor is very important to the Royal Borough and comes with many responsibilities. The Mayor is the First Citizen of the Borough and represents the Council, Chairs meetings and attends hundreds of events. Speeches are also often written by the Mayor, which can necessitate research.
Cllr Ken Smith was born in Somerset, though he had to evacuate to Wales during World War II. He has served overseas in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces, and postretirement, he worked in management at a multinational company. Outside of Oxford Street, Kingston has the biggest footfall on the high street, and as an ambassador for Kingston, he believes that in sharing the incredible history of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames and working together as a community, we can bring even more business into the town.
Cllr Ken Smith, as well as being the Mayor, is also Chairman of the Parachute Regiment Association (covering Surrey, Kent and South West London), a member of the Malden and Coombe Royal British Legion and the Surbiton Probus Club. The Mayor has also been Deputy Mayor when Cllr Chrissie Hitchcock was Mayor in 2010/11. The current Deputy is Cllr Cathy Roberts who attends events etc on behalf of the Mayor when necessary. Cllr Roberts also dedicates a lot of her time to community work. The Mayor is a hard-working man and highly supportive of local charities. During the course of the Mayoral Year the Mayor also meets at events with many of his counterparts, both from other London Boroughs as well as Surrey, and therefore supports many of their charities and visa versa.
The Mayor’s Charitable Trust is supporting the Scouts, Guides, Horse Ranges and Sea Cadets and during the course of his year in office the Mayor hopes to raise as much money as possible for these organisations.
The Mayor said that he is incredibly proud of the people of the Royal Borough who put tremendous amounts of their time and effort into fundraising. The Borough is brimming with philanthropy and is a generous and altruistic community. Diversity and consideration to all people are also very important to the Mayor.

POLICE ADVICE Bogus Callers Following Christmas and all those New Year sales, we tend to feel both pampered and strapped for cash. With all the lovely gifts given over the holidays and equipping ourselves to fulfil our New Year’s Resolutions, unfortunately, now is good a time as any for thieves to try and get a hold of your belongings. You must take every precaution necessary to prevent this from happening.
this carefully. If you are unsure, telephone the company the caller claims to represent. • The Utilities now offer a password identification system. Any caller from one of these companies should be able to give a pre-arranged password as additional proof of identity. • Beware of callers who attempt to distract you by claiming that they have seen something untoward in your rear garden or somewhere which may encourage you to leave your house they may have an accomplice awaiting this distraction.
Not all burglars break into homes - some will try to trick or con their way in. They are known as bogus callers and will pretend to be on official business from respectable concerns such as the Utility Companies - Gas, Electricity and Water - or the Council. They may claim to be tradesmen or workmen calling to carry out urgent repairs.
• If you are not convinced of the identity of the caller, don’t let them in. Ask the caller to come back later and arrange for a friend, relative or neighbour to be present on their return or ask the caller to contact this person.
Bogus callers succeed because they sound believable, so don’t be fooled. Make sure in your own mind that they are whom they claim to be by following these simple steps:
Treat every stranger with caution. If you are worried, dial 999 immediately and ask for the police.
• Think before you open the door - use your chain and spy hole or look out of the window to see if you recognise them.

Momentum Echoes Momentum children’s charity (www. moment-um.org) has recently launched a new bereavement support group called Momentum Echoes.
support has been offered to children and their families during some very Supplied by: Aine Larkdifficult - The experiences. Sadly, as the number of sick Fircroft Trust children increases, donations become even more vital in supporting families, so the charity is still very much in need of your contributions.
The Kingston-based charity has always supported families who have suffered the unimaginable loss of a child, but recently Momentum recognised that there was a real need to set up a group solely dedicated to bereaved families. Momentum Echoes is run by parents who have experienced the loss of a child themselves. It offers emotional and practical support, such as helping with funeral arrangements and organising counselling for family members, and will also be able to provide respite care, such as time away in one of Momentum’s holiday homes or spa breaks.
If you would like to make a donation to the new support group please visit www. moment-um.org or contact 020 8974 5931. Momentum receives no government funding so relies entirely on the support of the public and funds raised through its charity work.
Charity Director Bianca Effemey said, “We understand that the needs of bereaved parents are entirely different from those of families who are supporting their child through cancer treatment. Momentum Echoes will hopefully become a lifeline for many parents who are utterly lost following the death of their child.”
To find out more about the work being done at Momentum please visit the website www. moment-um.org.
Momentum supports the whole family including parents, siblings and grandparents. By establishing close links to families, they can identify methods that help to fit their specific needs. The support of Momentum continues as long as the family needs them.
Here are some photos from Momentum’s Gala Opera event at the Landmark Arts Centre last November which was the launch event for Momentum Echoes.
Understandably the grief process is a long and unpredictable one, and Momentum Echoes would like to raise enough funds to be able to support every family that needs this service, every step of the way. Through many fundraising successes and contributions from local residents, a lot of 7

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY
THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local CHARITY
Make Valentine’s Day Special for Your Elders We all like to feel special on Valentine’s Day. Whether we’re spending it with a loved one at a nice restaurant, taking the leap and asking someone out on a first date, or even if we’re stuck at work all day. Sometimes those little romantic gestures from that special someone can really turn things around for us, wherever we are. Unfortunately, for many seniors who spend a lot of their time by themselves, in care homes or living at home on their own, 14th February is just another day. Being alone this time of year, remembering loved ones and friends they’ve lost over the years can sometimes make them feel particularly lonely and depressed. Not everyone has someone to pamper and spoil them this time of year. Therefore, it is important that we make the effort to show we care.

• Give them a greeting card. Whether you bring the kids together to hand-make a Valentine’s card to express how much they love their grandparents, or you craft one yourself to show your affection, they are sure to appreciate it. No one knows your elders more than you.
There are a lot of ways for you to brighten up their day and let them know you love them. For example: • Send them some flowers. You could have them delivered, or bring them over yourself, and spend a little time catching up with them. • Bring them their favourites! Whether its a box of chocolates, tin of biscuits, or even a home-cooked meal - they’ll definitely appreciate the gesture, and the chance to reminisce.
There’s no perfect way to spoil someone in a way they’ll appreciate. As long as you are thoughtful, and can put aside the time to make their day special, they are sure to feel loved.
• Get creative. You could home-bake some heart-shaped cookies to share over a cup of tea or coffee, create a personalised gift basket full of goodies, possibly including some lavish spa gifts, or varieties of tea.
During the holidays and throughout popular events, a lot of us tend to notice how much we appreciate our loved ones being around, and Valentine’s isn’t just for hopeless romantics and loved-up couples. No one should feel left out. Make the effort and do something for your family this Valentine’s Day.
• Dig up some memories. Bringing out the old photo albums, or reading old love letters and greeting cards from the past will teach you something more about

Sleep rough so others don’t have to
Supplied by: Anne Nordheim - YMCALSW
Sleep Easy is YMCA London South West’s biggest fundraising event of the year, and aims to raise money towards the charity’s work with young and homeless people. On 6th March there will be two Sleep Easy events taking place in the Memorial Gardens in Kingston and by the Holy Trinity Church in Wimbledon.
In the YMCA LSW hostels, people who for various reasons have become homeless get the support they need to get back on their feet and to secure a place to live, and often also a job. The residents get training in Budgeting, CV writing and how to apply for jobs. They are also offered to take part in music, arts and drama projects which help boost their self-esteem and confidence. In 2014, YMCA LSW Residents Fahria, Raymond, Keith and Jade wrote and recorded their own songs for an album about homelessness which was released by YMCA LSW and is available on iTunes. “People do not necessarily understand how it is to be homeless just from seeing a young person living on the street. I think I wanted to show that it’s not their own fault when people end up sleeping rough or become homeless; it has to do with all sorts of causes”, YMCA resident Jade says.
For the whole family This is a fun, family-friendly event perfect for families, Scout groups, work colleagues and school classes who want to take on a challenge, and at the same time raise awareness of homelessness issues. By ‘sleeping rough’ for one night, you will get a feel of how it is to live on the streets, although on our two events in Kingston and Wimbledon, we do offer a warm place to take shelter if the weather is too cold and wet, and you will be served hot soup during the night and breakfast in the morning…. There will also be plenty of entertainment, games and a cardboard box competition to keep you active and warm throughout the night! Some of the money raised will go to the Merton Winter Night Shelter for homeless people, and some will go to our work with young homeless people in our hostels located in Wimbledon and Surbiton. Life skills and arts projects 10
“Also, everyone’s got pride, even those on the street that you don’t look at. Remember, they too feel their self-worth stripped when facing themselves in such a situation,” she adds. Love Kingston Day
LOCAL HISTORY Supplied by: Mike Seigel - Kingston Tour Guides
As we celebrate Love Kingston Day this Valentine’s Day, it might be useful to look back at how love and charity were treated in bygone days.
also to serve a practicable purpose, namely to provide water for people at a time when running water was a scarcity in most homes.
Sadly, there are no great love stories or romances centred around Kingston, and indeed in earlier times women were not highly respected! In mediaeval times women were more often the object of scorn and derision, rather than of love and romance, and women who talked too much were widely regarded as nagging scolds! Such women in Kingston were treated to a very particular punishment. Most minor punishments took place in the Marketplace where the stocks were positioned, but over-loquacious women with biting tongues were taken to the Clattern Bridge, opposite where the Guildhall now stands, and there they were lowered on a ducking-stool from the bridge into the river Hogsmill below, in an attempt to cure them!! Not at all politically correct! Yet the spirit of Love Kingston Day can be traced back to benefactors of yesteryear. The Shrubsole Monument in the Marketplace was set up to commemorate Henry Shrubsole, three times Mayor and one who generously tried to alleviate the problems of the poor in the town. In fact he died while in office, actually whilst distributing packets of tea to elderly women at the end of a dinner! It is because of the sudden death of this kindly man that to this day the Mayor of Kingston has one black link in the chain of office. Henry Shrubsole’s family’s fortunes had followed an unusual trajectory, from undertaking and drapery to banking, and the NatWest bank by the memorial had once been a Shrubsole bank. The memorial of a gracefully-robed woman carrying an urn on one shoulder and holding the hand of a little boy, was put up not only in memory of one of the town’s most notable benefactors but 11
If you would like to discover more about the history of Kingston as you walk around our town, why not join one of our tours, led by specially trained volunteers? These meets gather in the Market Place outside the church gates at 11am every Sunday in summer and on every first Sunday of the month from October to March. The charge is £5 per adult - or perhaps you might like to arrange a special tour for you and your friends? For further information please ring 020 8399 0160 or 020 8399 7888.

Bleed Your Radiator
DIY SECTION Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
Following the particularly chilly months, things should hopefully be warming up now. Not only does this make the mornings easier and give those great days-out the go ahead, but it also means you could start saving some money on those pesky heating bills! Our weather is always a little bit unpredictable, however, and a fullyfunctioning radiator could come in handy if we have another low-temperature turn. A sign that your radiator needs bleeding is both a cold feeling at the top and a warm feeling at the bottom. This is down to trapped air within the system and is a very common occurrence. If you’re unsure about how to bleed your radiator, hopefully this guide will show you where to start. Turn the heating off. Before beginning, always ensure that you’ve switched the central heating off at the main controls, as it will help to keep any air from entering the radiator.
of the radiator and should have a small red handle. Insert the key, then turn the valve handle anti-clockwise, slowly, until there is a hissing sound as the air is let out. After no more than a half-turn, the air should start to escape. As water starts to drip from the radiator, tighten the valve back to its original position, mopping up any spills with a cloth
(take caution if the water is hot!).
Cover up your hand. Wrap a cloth around your hand for protection, as the water let out of the radiator may (or may not) be very hot. Watch out for leaks! Make sure you keep a towel or a small bowl under the bleed valve as it can sometimes leak water onto the floor. Check that you have the key to hand. If you can’t find the bleed/radiator key, you will need to purchase a new one first. These can be found at most DIY stores.
Switch the heating back on. Make sure you revisit the central mains, and be sure to check your radiator is running okay after a few hours and that no water is leaking. Bleeding a radiator is quite a simple procedure that you can take care of yourself. However, if you’re at all worried about your ability to solve a problem or you think something else may be causing problems, make sure you call in a professional. At Omni we aim to appoint the best possible local trades in your area.
Locate the valve. The bleed valve is relatively easy to find. It will be on one side 17

Surrey Dog Behaviour
FAMILY SECTION Supplied by: Lauren Walters Surrey Dog Behaviour
My motto is ‘Teach the owner – Change the dog’
family pet that they are proud to own.
I offer dog owners help with important issues such as aggressive behaviour, timid dogs who are scared of loud noises and those that have low social skills. I have helped owners with dogs who have taken to relieving themselves in the house, teaching the dog to only go outside. Another client simply wanted their dog to stop barking at the washing machine. The main reason I am asked to help is to give owners more control, teaching their dog simple manners such as walking, to heel on the lead without pulling their owner’s arm off, and to keep from jumping up at people.
One thing that all dog breeds share, no matter their size or what they were designed to do, is that they never want to be top dog and in charge. Dogs love to be told what to do, how to do it and when to do it. If you do not give this to your dog they will take this role on and you will start having issues. An important part of a dog’s day is to be walked. They have in their genes a need to get out and find food. We now offer them food and so the need to go and hunt for dinner is taken away, we need to replace this with a walk. I am a firm believer that discipline and respect from your dog is best learnt on a dog walk, and if you expect a high level of respect from your dog in this area everything else will fall into place within time. EVERY DAY IS A TRAINING DAY EVERY OBSTACLE IS A TRAINING OPPORTUNITY EVERY WALK IS IMPORTANT
I hear a lot about badly behaved dogs in the news, and no matter what the issue is with them, we can change this to become proud owners of lovely dogs. It takes simple changes in order to gain respect from your dog. I say respect, because they do not pay for rent, food or heating. It is a privilege for them to be living with you, the least they can do is show respect by listening to you. There is, however, no such thing as a bad dog. It is all down to the owner. Whether the problem is slight or major, any behavioural issues can be resolved. Not all issues can be turned around overnight but with an owner who is prepared to change their dog for the better and put in the effort for the rest of the dog’s life they will find a low-maintenance

In September, bring the pot indoors and allow the bulb to dry out for about 4 weeks with no food or water at all. Remove the bulb from its pot and cut off the yellow leaves from just above the neck of the bulb. Place the bulb in a cool place for 6-8 weeks. Before re-planting, place the roots in water for about 4-5 hours to retain moisture. With the top half above soil level, plant the bottom half of the bulb in a pot only slightly bigger than itself and try not to over-water. Amaryllis do not require feeding until flowering has finished.
Q3: I have been trying to grow some plants from seed, but having got them to germinate, all of the shoots are very long and leggy. Why is this happening? A3: It sounds like your seedlings aren’t getting enough light, and the stems are growing tall in order to find a good supply. I suggest that you try and prick these seedlings on now. Fill a tray (the same way you did for seed sowing). Use a potting mix as opposed to one which is purely for germinating seeds. Dib holes in the compost using a pencil or dibber, deep enough for the roots to dangle. Handle the seedlings carefully, holding them by their leaves. Place each seedling in each new hole. The roots should be in contact with the compost, with each stem supported and their leaves resting on the compost surface.
Q2; My indoor rubber plant has suddenly dropped a lot of its leaves – does this mean that it is dying? A2: If the leaf loss is generally spread over the plant and happens suddenly, over-watering is usually the problem. It could be caused by low temperatures, minimal light, over-fertilisation or draughts. Do any of these situations sound familiar?
Water using a fine spray, and place the tray/s in a well-lit place, out of direct sunlight. Ensure that the compost does not dry out completely.
The natural ageing process going on within the plant causes it to drop the lowest leaves and there is nothing really that you can do about it. For it to thrive, it needs to be kept in average warmth (55F in winter), in a bright spot, with only a few hours of direct morning sunlight. 21

Jupiter Ascending
Supplied by: Leanna Carl
A great Scifi adventure brought to us by the creators of The Matrix trilogy, Andy and Lana Wachowski. This fantasy flick is packed full of action and suspense. Mila Kunis (commonly known for her voicing/acting in Family Guy and That 70s Show) plays Jupiter Jones, a girl born under night sky and clearly destined for big things. After she becomes an adult, working in dead-end jobs and always out of luck, a genetically engineered ex-military hunter named Caine (played by Channing Tatum) tracks her down to shed light on bizarre happenings and explain the signs.
Out on DVD
Dracula Untold Another great take on the classic story of Dracula, this movie may not be suitable for children under 15, but is great for all you Vampire fans out there. The young Prince Vlad Tepes, played by Luke Evans (known for his role in The Hobbit films) is in danger of having his kingdom overtaken. Ordinarily, he lives quite a peaceful life in his small kingdom. However, things turn rocky after a Turk warlord demands from him that he recruit him 1000 boys -including with his own son- in order for them to create an army. The only way to keep his men and avoid being overruled by the Turks, is for Vlad to obtain a fearsome power and become a monster himself, despite the terror this may inflict on his own people. It is all he can do to protect his family, and everyone else living within the kingdom. With other actors like Charles Dance (popular star of Game of Thrones), this is definitely one to add to the collection.

Jupiter discovers that she is next in line for an incredible inheritance, which may alter the balance of the cosmos - to reign the entire universe! Unfortunately, this puts her in the crosshairs of some very powerful and dangerous people. As a result, an all-out battle for control befalls them, and with the help of Caine she must fight to survive - for the good of the universe. This movie is not only incredibly explosive and exciting, but also features stars like the legendary Sean Bean. Be sure you don’t miss it!

Feel Special this Valentine’s Day
HEALTH & BEAUTY Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
Whether you’ve got big plans this year, or you’re just kicking back with friends, you are guaranteed to feel extra special following a good pampering. Everyone deserves to feel their absolute best this time of year. Hopefully reading this article will inspire you to set aside some time for yourself. Skincare is important all year-round. We all need to look after our skin, but occasions such as these give us more of an excuse to go a little further than a quick morning wash or cleansing wipe at the end of the day. Everyone can agree, a nice hot shower or dip in the bath and some facemask treatments are an instant pick-me-up. I personally love to indulge in mud masks and peel-offs. Just make sure you know what your skin needs before you start choosing (as much as we are drawn to the yummiest-smelling ones!). Some of us may have oily skin that will benefit from a good peel or scrub and some of us may have sensitive skin that needs a more gentle cleanse or moisturise. Feel fresh and fragrant. If you’re not much of a perfume-person, you could invest in some delicious scented body butters and creams. These can be fruity, floral or contain sweet scents that are near enough edible, making you feel special and a lot more confident allround. If you are into a bit of eau de parfum, remember to spritz the essential regions, such as wrists, inner-elbows, behind the ears, the neck hollow and behind the knees. You don’t have to do them all - and don’t overdo it - but a couple of drops or a few sprays per 31
area will really do the trick. I’m sure you’ve all heard that with makeup, less is more... This is true, and you don’t want to cake it on before a night out, however, feel free to add some darker tones around the eyes for a romantic rendezvous. The main thing when it comes to your face is to colour coordinate, i.e. find a lipstick shade to suit you that doesn’t clash with your eyeshadow. This is something best experimented for yourself beforehand. You can’t go wrong with big, bold lashes. Focus on eyelash curlers and mascara above all, as your eyes do a lot of the talking for you. Saying that, a good tinted lip balm can work wonders. If you really want to make a statement, why not go and get your hair done by N V Angels hairdressers? We should all spoil ourselves from time to time. It doesn’t have to be V-Day to treat yourself, but hopefully you’ll use this special occasion as an excuse. From all of us at Omni Local, we hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s Day!

Feel Great with The Hypoxi Therapy Centre!
Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
The Hypoxi Therapy centre is a Surbitonbased establishment and has been growing increasingly popular since opening in 2011. This centre gives local residents an incredibly effective new way of losing weight. You can burn off noticeable inches from the areas you feel less confident about, whatever your body shape. After 12 sessions of committed sessions you will radically decrease the appearance of problems like cellulite and will completely reshape those troublesome areas, such as the hips, thighs, waist and buttocks. The centre offers two different methods of training: Hypoxi Therapy and Vacunaut Training. Hypoxi therapy is better suited to those with more of a pear-shaped body, as it focuses on areas like the hips and thighs. Through a combination of vacuum therapy and gentle exercise, the lower body is able to naturally burn fat a lot faster. The sealed Hypoxi Pod rejuvenates the skin, and helps to increase blood supply and circulation to the lower body to result in increased metabolism and fat breakdown. Vacunaut therapy is better suited to those with an apple-shaped figure, as it also focuses on burning fat around the midriff section, such as the stomach area. Continued workouts and a well-maintained diet (particularly avoiding carbohydrates postsession) will guarantee inch loss, cellulite reduction and a naturally achieved, more toned body. This type of therapeutic training has had its fair share of positive feedback, even in the case of some celebrities. A lot of first-time users would recommend their friends give it a try. Natalie recently shared her first-time experience with us:
ages and can never really shift it. Initially, I was a little nervous, but Helen and her friendly staff helped me feel at ease almost immediately. They got me suited up into my training gear, and they plugged me into the Hypoxi before I got on to the treadmill! (Don’t worry- its just a half hour walk... no running - Phew!) The hypoxi suit got to work on my stomach. It was a bit of an odd sensation, but not at all unpleasant. If anything, it was sort of a tickling feeling, and I couldn’t help but giggle. Following a quick half hour session, I was finished. You could easily squeeze these sessions into a lunch break! I’m really looking forward to more sessions and watching my belly disappear for good!” Why not pay the Hypoxi Therapy Centre a visit, for your 1/2 hour no-obligation trial on either machine? There is no better way to fulfill those New Years Resolutions! HYPOXI THERAPY CENTRE, 263 EWELL ROAD, SURBITON. KT6 7AA. Tel: 020 8399 9281. www.hypoxi-therapycentre.co.uk

New Year’s Resolutions Have you made your New Year Resolution? “I will give up smoking.” “I will lose weight.” “I will .......”
WELLBEING SECTION Supplied by: Phillip Holt - NLP Now
A New Year is like starting afresh, leaving behind a bad habit or compulsion, and people start with best intention on the first day, the second day, “well one will not hurt”, day three, back to the old habits. The problem is that people set themselves a goal, a place to be, to learn a new habit, and that is it, it is just a goal, and they fail to achieve. Why? It is because there is no driver for them to aim for, no pain or suffering for them to run away from, there is no prize for them to win, it is just to stop or do something, they are not emotionally attached. When you plan a holiday or buy a new item, you plan for it, and you get emotionally involved. You feel the warmth of the sun as you lay on the warm soft sand whilst the waves gently wash the shore, and you get excited. You are drawn towards, even compelled to book the holiday. Many people seek help to achieve these changes they want. It could be to stop smoking, give up alcohol, drugs, biting nails or any compulsions, to start a new life free from the old ways. The one thing missing is any emotional involvements in the outcome once achieved. I call it Outcome Thinking.
emotions, and being coached through a session, you are asked what will it do for you, what will it give you having had already achieved what you wanted to achieve? You need to really push until you get a very strong emotional state. Now having achieved that emotional state, think, what would it do to others; what would it give them, you having gained this outcome or state, and what would it do for you, your friends or family, being happy you have achieved this outcome. This strong outcome, or state, will drive you to achieving your resolution. People seek help with never ending sessions over many weeks, or using replacements like patches or substitutes, making the suppliers and manufacturers very rich. But, in one session it is possible to make changes you want, to give up smoking, drink, drugs or other habits, easily and without withdrawal symptoms. Not only is it a new year, but today is the first day of the rest of your life. Why not make a resolution to live the rest of your life as you want to now? If you would like a consultation, book a session with me by calling 0845 130 6213. Do it now. www.nlpnow.net

Checking your Car Battery
MOTORING SECTION Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
Car batteries are one of the easiest things to overlook when it comes to car maintenance, and not everyone can knows how to give them a check-up. Signs that you may need a tune-up include troubles starting the engine or dim headlights. There are many hazard checks to consider, however you may find it surprisingly easy to perform a diagnosis and a little battery maintenance. Below is a breakdown on how its done:
brush and clamp cleaner, or some steel wool if its a tough job. • Dry the area off with a rag and check your clothes for residue. If there is any, you should wash it out right away. • Reconnect the terminals (replacing the positive cable first) and coat them with grease or petroleum jelly in order to prevent the powdery deposits from returning.
Remember to do your safety checks • Make sure to shut off the car engine and disconnect the battery before doing anything else. • You should never work on a battery whilst smoking a cigarette, as the sulfuric acid inside the car battery can emit hydrogen gas, which spells trouble for an open flame. • Always remember to clean off any acid deposits from your clothing and skin as soon as possible, as it may be corrosive.
• Check the cables and clamps for damage such as fraying. If the damage is severe you may need to replace them. A professional opinion is beneficial. • Check that the electrolyte in your battery is strong enough if you’ve had problems with start-ups. • If the casing on your battery is cracked, it will definitely need replacing.
• Tie cables out of the way, as connections between the terminal posts and metal surfaces could damage the battery. • Unless you remove the negative cable first, you could give yourself a shock, and a slip of your wrench can cause an unwanted fusion. Locate your battery and follow these steps • Remove the cables (always negative first) by undoing the nut on each clamp and jiggling the clamp off. • Clean off any residue from the terminals using a wet toothbrush and a little baking soda. You can also use a battery terminal 35
The main thing to consider is that a clean battery is a lot more reliable, and is sure to last longer than a messy or corroded one. If you’re still unsure about performing a check-up yourself, why not contact your local professionals like quality auto-service e Tyres?
