Refugee Action Kingston celebrating the Refugee Week

Refugee Action Kingston (RAK) is a local independent, registered charity that exists to enable people from refugee backgrounds in Kingston and surrounding areas to become active, and accepted participants in our local communities. It is difficult to say how many Kingston residents are from the refugee backgrounds, but RAK has almost 1,600 registered clients of 42 different nationalities, who bring diversity of languages, cultures and skills to our small borough. When they first come to us, our clients are vulnerable. Haunted by the persecutions they faced in the country they used to call a home, often traumatised, physically ill, depressed and confused about how to settle and become independent. However, they all show resilience and determination to adjust to change, lead a normal active life and become equal members of Kingston’s community. RAK provides a wide range of services to help people from refugee backgrounds learn English, enhancing their existing skills and acquiring new life skills. They are able to access education, volunteering and employment opportunities, will be aware of their rights and responsibilities to improve their health and wellbeing, will have access to health and social care services and will gain confidence to build new friendships and support networks. RAK’s projects include: casework advice, advocacy, career advice, counselling, four weekly English classes, regular health activities and events, clothing donation days and a yearly Summer Play- scheme and Young Peoples’ Project. The RAK’s most recent project, the Timebank, offers an opportunity for local refugees and asylum seekers to exchange skills and give

back, whether it is by helping youngsters with their homework, getting busy on the local allotment, teaching others their own language, exchanging healthy recipes, teaching and learning ICT skills, interpreting for RAK or producing art. The story of Mr Anwar, a 60 year old man from Pakistan best illustrates RAK’s holistic approach to integration. Using his Timebank membership Mr Anwar joined a computer class run by another member. In exchange for computer tuition, he painted an oil picture of RAK’s Learning Centre Coordinator. The painting inspired an anonymous donation for Mr Anwar to attend an art class at Kingston Adult Education. Another Timebank member has now offered to teach Mr Anwar Photoshop. We hope that this, coupled with career advice we offer him will lead to Mr Anwar becoming self-employed artist in the future. Although RAK employs a small team, we would not be able to operate without the generous time given to the organisation by our 60+ volunteers. POLICE ADVICE Community Engagement Community engagement specifically in relation to stop and search in the MPS takes on a variety of forms, from local community monitoring group meetings, to lessons delivered by schools and officers to members of the community, accompanying police and observing stop and search operations. Best practice is shared through the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime stop and search Community Monitoring Network meetings. Youth Engagement Youth engagement is a key activity for the Metropolitan Police Service and is embedded in the work of all the boroughs. Many boroughs have officers whose sole role is dedicated to engaging with young people. There are also ‘School officers’ who are employed full-time for working with their schools. Stop and search is included in each of these youth engagement activities, but due to the varied nature of the boroughs they each have their own methods and styles of delivery. Youth engagement specifically in relation to stop and search takes two distinct themes: Rights & Responsibilities and Trust & Confidence. Recent activities include: • Youth Engagement Panel in Enfield • Sports Clubs in Hammersmith and Fulham with a dedicated lesson on police issues • Valued based programme in Waltham Forest • Peer Leaders programme in Hillingdon • Films being produced by the community in both Hackney and Edmonton • DVD created in collaboration between Police and young people in Brent • Wandsworth Youth Think Tank • Voyage Stop and Search workshops in Kingston

• Street Life project in Bromley • Only Connect Theatre Group MPS Stop and search data The MPS publishes on a monthly basis, the stop and search monitoring report on the internet. This gives a breakdown of data on Stop and Search for each London borough and the MPS. The document enables local community monitoring groups to scrutinise the use of stop and search by their local police and to hold them to account. Equality Impact Assessment An Equality Impact Assessment (EIA) measures the adverse and positive impact of policing proposals on communities, through a structured and transparent process. Proposals include: corporate and local policies, corporate change, projects, procedures, functions, strategies, strategic decisions, pre-planned operations, policing plans and schemes. Impact assessment is an ongoing engagement, decision-making and risk assessment process, to be started early and continued throughout the development of proposals. Cancer explained in an Easy Language Most cancers occur in people over the age of 60, but they can occur at any age and in any part of the body. We do not know exactly what causes cells to become cancerous but scientists believe that most causes are linked with our environments and how we live. It is important to detect and treat cancer early. For many, thousands of cancer treatments can be successful, providing the disease has not spread too widely.

There is no reliable general test that can tell whether or not a person has cancer somewhere in his/her body. However, there are tests which can detect particular forms of cancer well before a person has noticed any symptoms. For example, CEA blood tests, cervical smears, breast examinations and testicular self-examinations. The following symptoms are all possible signs of cancer and should be reported to a doctor: • Thickening or lump anywhere in the body • Changes in warts or moles • Persistent cough or hoarseness • Change in bowel or bladder habits • A sore that does not heal • Unusual bleeding or discharge • Indigestion or difficulty in swallowing • Vomiting or coughing up blood • Unexplained weight loss • Unexplained loss of appetite These symptoms are also possible signs of many other things, and do not necessarily indicate cancer at all. The cause, however, needs to be established. The following links have been found between: • Asbestos dust and lung cancer • Vinyl chloride (raw materials for PVC) and liver cancer • Some chemicals dye-stuff and bladder cancer

• Some compounds or arsenic, chromium and nickel, and skin, lung and nasal cancer • Some types of tar and soot, and skin cancer The good news is, up to 80% of cancers can be avoided, and risks can be reduced by adopting lifestyle changes, such as: quitting smoking; avoiding passive-smoke; sensible drinking; healthy eating (specifically a diet low in fat and starchy foods, with more fruits and vegetables); maintaining an appropriate weight; avoiding over-exposure to the sun, and ensuring all safety regulations/precautions are followed if your job involves exposure to unusually high radiation or other hazards. Kingston Upon Thames We all know that our Kingston is upon Thames (to distinguish it from Kingston upon Hull) but did you know that Kingston was once an island?!

The earliest settlement here was not only on what we now call, the Thames but was also an island surrounded by rivers; including the Hogsmill, which you can still see today by the Guildhall going under Clattern Bridge down, to the recently developed Charter Quay. If you look closely at the Guildhall, you will see signs of the importance of the river. Above the Art Deco door you can see the depiction of the river as a long-haired maiden, and beside the doors there are the fronts of two horse-drawn boats carrying goods by river. Look higher and you will spot the weather vane, which is of a ferryman plying his barge along the river. So the river (or initially, rivers) was all-important to the growing economy of this ancient settlement. By 1086, Kingston was mentioned in the Domesday Book as having a population of 500, five mills and three fisheries. The three fish are the symbol of the town, and proudly displayed by the pupils of the Tiffin Schools on their uniform. The Clattern Bridge opposite the Guildhall claims to be the oldest bridge in Surrey, and dates back to the 12th century. Its name derives from the clattering horses, and it was widened in Victorian times to make room for the ever-increasing traffic (plus ca change!). In medieval times the Clattern Bridge was also the site for a very particular punishment. Most punishments took place in the Market place, but it was to the bridge that over-loquacious women with scalding tongues were brought, where they were lowered on a ducking-stool in an attempt to cure them!! Not at all politically correct! Today, the Clattern Bridge leads past a plethora 13

of restaurants into Charter Quay, developed at the turn of the development, and thus a very modern part of Kingston. Old and new come together here: first take a close look at the café in the middle of the piazza, for inside are timbers from the roof of the Castle Inn, an old hostelry from the Market Place. Furthermore, this whole area is returning our ancient town to its roots, since the habitat is now reminiscent of the marshland that was once here, and a welcome home for the swans! If you would like to discover more as you walk around our town, why not join one of our tours, led by specially trained volunteers? These meet in the Market Place outside the church gates at 2.30 every Sunday in summer and on every first Sunday of the month from October to March. The Cooking Corner Homemade Beef Burgers Recipe makes 4 burgers Ingredients: 900g Chuck mince beef (we recommend Bentleys of Surrey) 1 finely diced onion A handful of chopped parsley Salt and pepper to taste Sweat the onion in a frying pan, then combine with the other ingredients. Divide the mixture into 4 patties. Burger relish: 1 red onion (halved) 1 red pepper (halved with no pips) 1 medium tomato Olive oil Salt, pepper and vinegar to taste Heat the oven to 220-240 C. Cover the onion, red pepper and tomato with a glug of olive oil on a baking tray. Add salt and pepper, then roast in a very hot oven for 20 minutes (until they start to caramelise). Allow to cool slightly then rub/squeeze off the skin from the red pepper and tomato. Briefly blitz in the ingredients in a food processor then add vinegar to taste. Serve with salad in a toasted bun and enjoy! 15

Prunus species tick all these boxes creating an all year round variety of aesthetic forms in a hardy little tree that can easily form a part of gardens large and small. The most common Cherry planted is Prunus Avium. This tree can survive for up to 50 years quite easily, and tolerates most soils including the heavy clays found in the Surbiton area. The tree produces a fantastic sea of white blossom in April and May followed by reddish purple berries from June onwards before evolving the canopy into a golden brown foliage in autumn. As a bonus, the tree supports a wide range of wildlife from nectar for bees to nesting opportunities for a range of birds. As a large group of trees, the Prunus Avium cover an area of the world stretching from Turkey and western Asia to Tunisia in North Africa and across mainland Europe. The trees have a long history of cultivation, dating back at least as far back as 800 BC with the Greeks for the Cherry crop. For small gardens, the Prunus Sylvia tree, having a very compact upright form, might be more suitable. Or perhaps the Prunus Amanogawa with a columnar form and beautiful pink flowers, growing up to about 8m high. The popular Prunus Cerasifera or “Cherry Plum” is another popular and edible, ornamental tree with quite a wide range of fruit and foliage colours. 17

The process in selecting a tree should never be rushed, as they are a long-term commitment and make a substantial contribution to the aesthetic form for your garden. Keep Your Home Pest-Free This Summer Its a great time of year for all, with more to do, warm temperatures and an excuse to get away! Unfortunately, not everything that comes with Summer is enjoyable, for instance - the bugs come back! With the warmer weather sinking in, you’ll probably want to air out your home a little more than usual, meaning frequent fliers may come swarming in. If you’ve started to notice an issue in your home with unwanted house guests (no, not door- to- door salesmen), then hopefully this article can give you some ideas on how to keep a handle on things.

Preventative measures can include: • Making sure all wood on the outside of your home (such as decking and doors) is properly treated, as it won’t seem so appealing to any wood-destroying pests, or bees hoping to find a nest. • Sealing up any holes or cracks that would allow insects to get into your home, remember to check any vents or crawl spaces too. • Removing any crumbs, rotting fruit or pet food that has been left out too long, as they can all attract ants, flies and even rodents. It may be worth investing in some sealable tupperware to keep food away from parasites. You should probably keep any fruit in the fridge for the Summer, as you’ll be asking for fruit flies leaving them out to ripen. • Go on a wasp hunt regularly, as they tend to build nests under things like tables and even BBQ grills. If you do happen to spot a nest, act fast and get on the phone. • Avoiding leaving any dirty laundry out, or keeping any clothes in a hamper that has a lid, as the oils left in clothes can attract moths. You could also obtain some mothballs or keep your clothes in plastic 19

bags/covers, particularly natural materials. • Be sure to leave things like books on shelves and keep them well-maintained, as they can attract silverfish. • Sweep/hoover your house on a regular basis, if there are any creepy crawlies hiding under the sofa or in the carpets, they will be no match for a good vacuum. • Keep your pets well maintained: flea treatments, flea collars, bathing and grooming when necessary, otherwise you can open your house up to even more lessmanageable blood-suckers and flies. Some insects are little bother, so there’s no need to call an exterminator, whereas others are a real cause for concern. If you do feel like you have a real problem, it is definitely worth calling in a professional, such as Knockout Pest Control, as you don’t want to leave the problem to keep getting worse.

Build Your Own Entertainment Unit What You’ll Need: Plywood Sheets, Wood Glue, Wooden Dowels, Pencil, Drill, Screws, Hinges, Biscuits, Nail Gun, Saw, 3/8” Drill Bits, Clamps, Mallet, Biscuit Joiner.

Method: 1. Cut down the plywood so that you have: one- 55½ ” x 28” base, four- 54” x 17¼” shelves, two- 35” x 17” sides, one- 52½” x 17” for the middle shelf, six- 17” x 5” dividers, four- 17” x 8” dividers, three- 16½” x 8” doors, two- 51½” x 3” backing. These parts should build a unit to fit a 47” flat screen, so consider the size you want first. 2. For the base, measure ¾” from both sides, marking with a pencil, and make another line down the centre of the base. Attach three dividers lengthways onto the line marks using glue, and secure them using a nail gun on the underside of the base. Next, glue one of the shelf pieces to the top of the dividers, leaving ¾” on either side. Secure with the nail gun and drill in some pilot holes with a countersink bit, then fix the top piece on to the dividers using the screws. 5. Repeat step 2, using one of your 54” shelves as your base. Use a 3/8” drill bit to make six holes in the top of your first piece, over the dividers. Make another six holes in the dividers of your second piece, so they’re about ¾” from the edge and line up when the second piece is stacked on top. 7. Fill the holes with glue and insert the wooden dowels to connect the pieces, using your mallet to secure them. Use the joiner to create a biscuit hole towards the upper back, 23

and another three along the shorter inside edge of the two side pieces. Make 3 aligning holes on the edges of the base so the sides make 90 degree angles, then place the biscuits inside the holes on the sides and fix with glue and nails. 9. Make biscuit holes in the back ledgers so the top and bottom of the side pieces line up. The ledgers will create a structured frame. Line up the sides with the ledgers and the base and secure. Fix the bottom ledger onto the base, then put one of your 54” shelves on the top of the side pieces, matching the piece below. 11. Combine your third piece with the rest, then use dividers for the cupboards. Glue the pieces -at equal distances apart- onto your third shelf using dowels and glue. Pound them in with the mallet, and clamp. Attach the door pieces using hinges. Repeat steps 6 and 7 (using holes and dowels) to attach your cupboards. Now you have your unit!

Creative writing A question posed recently on the website Sciencedump.com was ‘if someone from the 1950s suddenly appeared today, what would be the most difficult thing to explain to them about life?’ The answer was ‘I possess a device, in my pocket, that is capable of accessing the entirety of information known to man. I use it to look at pictures of cats and get into arguments with strangers.’ Of course, the chance to look at footage of cats or have arguments are just part of what the internet has to offer. For anyone who can tear themselves away there is a lot else you can use it for. The educational value of the internet is often overlooked, but as well as putting an immense array of information at our fingertips, making research trips to the Library a thing of the past for today’s students, it has also increased the options for study with online courses available on almost any subject at any level. For people with busy lives working, bringing up a family, or both, online courses can be a fantastic way of returning to education, offering a flexible study programme that they can fit around other commitments. For people who can’t get out of the house, or don’t have a car, they can also provide an opportunity to study and pursue an interest they might not otherwise be able to do. Creative writing is one area where a range of courses can be found online. Award winning playwright and local author Andy Moseley has been providing online courses as well as private tuition, 25

Father’s Day Its that time of year where we celebrate that all important male role model in our lives lets hear it for Dads! Sometimes its hard to figure out the perfect way to spoil him on Father’s Day, so hopefully this article will help to inspire you. It’s also about shedding some light on the history behind the special occasion. Father’s Day was created in order to honour fathers, celebrating fatherhood, the influence they had on society and the paternal bonds, as a way to compliment Mother’s Day celebrations. The story behind how Father’s Day began is told in two versions. Some people believe that the first Father’s Day to be recognised was in Fairmont, West Virginia, on the 5th of July, 1908. Supposedly, Grace Golden Clayton proposed to the minister of a local Methodist Church that they should hold a celebration for all of the deceased Fathers, killed in a terrible mine explosion. Another story told recalls a celebration in Washington on the 19th June, 1910. Sonora Smart Dodd decided to honour her Father, after hearing a Mother’s Day sermon in Church the year before. She felt it was wrong not to acknowledge a Father’s deserved praise, when Mother’s Day was such a well known celebration. Her Father

William was a formidable Civil War veteran, widower and Father of six, who provided her and her siblings with everything they needed after their mother died. She had originally suggested that the anniversary of her Father’s death - the 5th June should be named Father’s Day, however rescheduling and mis-planning led the date to fall on the third Sunday of June. Father’s day was originally only celebrated locally, but was later recognised as a national holiday. It was in 1972 that it became official. Trade groups such as tie manufacturers, tobacconists and other traditional gift makers for men appreciated the occasion for marketing reasons, and still do. As time has gone by, much like Mother’s Day, the occasion has become more commercialised, but has always seemed to dim against Mother’s Day celebrations. Along with

Father’s Day, International Men’s Day is also celebrated in several countries on the 19th of November, for men and boys who aren’t Fathers. If like many, you sometimes struggle to find ways to celebrate your Father, you should start brainstorming as soon as possible. Think about his hobbies - does he enjoy a night out with a cold pint and good company? Is he into sports? Maybe he’s more of a stay at home type, and he’d just like to put his feet up or make time for himself and his endeavours? If he is currently working on a project, why not enquire about it now, in order to find out possible contributions you could make? This could mean purchasing him some new tools and materials, finding some time to join in and help him out, or getting some finishing touches for when its finished. If he just wants to relax, DVDs, video games, comfy loungewear or even just some delicious edible treats or drinks he rarely indulges in, that he could make use of during his downtime. Most Dads just want some time with their kids, or some time to rejuvenate and appreciate how well they’ve done for their family. If you know your dad would appreciate a nice meal or an evening at the pub with his family, why not find out the best places to take him in Kingston? There are a wide variety of great restaurants

and hospitable pubs for you to hold your celebrations at. Or, if you’d prefer something involving a bit more fun and activity, you could even take him to the Rotunda for bowling or the latest movie? You can always find cinematic inspiration by referring to our Film File section too. If you’re simply stuck on a gift idea you can wrap up, work your conversations to find out what he’d love! Maybe all he wants is a nice box of chocolates, since he never buys it himself- or maybe he’s in need of something more useful, like some new shaving equipment, or a replacement wallet? The possibilities are endless, as we all know men aren’t the most keen of shoppers. In my experience, they’ll rarely buy themselves new clothes, unless there’s a special occasion, so if you have an idea of his measurements and are pretty confident about his tastes, you could always opt for that route. Maybe you’ve seen a comical t-shirt he’d appreciate? Or maybe you want to go traditional and create an “Ode to Dad” gift via a “No.1 Dad” mug or pair of socks or slippers? Whatever you decide, just taking a day to show how much he means to you will mean the world to him.

So you’re thinking about buying a car? For many people, buying a car is a bit daunting, as it isn’t something you can make a snap decision about. As well as a lot of saving, it takes a ton of thought to get it right. Hopefully this article will help you out:

Think it through! Don’t just head to the nearest car dealer and pick a car because you like the colour blue, or because Ferrari’s seem fun. Learn the ins and outs of the car you’re considering before you start spending. Research is key. Consider the Quality Particularly in used cars - have you asked about the mileage? It doesn’t hurt to ask how old the vehicle is. You want to know it’s still got plenty of drive left in it and that it hasn’t been mistreated, in order to determine a fair price and to guarantee a long, problem-free ownership of your new car.

You’ll have to pay it off in installments, but the full cost could be settled up front by your financier. This way, all you’ll need for now is the down payment. Never stop saving though!

Size matters Consider all the tasks you’re going to use it for. Check you have all the storage space you need in the back for shopping etc; obviously if you have a large family you’ll need plenty of seating, perhaps means for a car seat. Unless your purpose for buying a car is purely treating yourself to joy-rides in a speedy two seater.

Fill-ups Consider whether you’ll be filling your vehicle with petrol or diesel. If you don’t tend to drive long distances you should opt for petrol fill-ups. Diesel filters don’t have the time to become properly efficient, which can cause a lot of problems. The filters can get clogged quite easily due to an inability to burn off the smoke that gets absorbed.

Insurance! Make sure that the insurance costs aren’t going to be too out of reach. Always consider those additional funds before you settle on a car! Do your homework on insurance costs to figure out what options you have.

Trust your gut Probably the best thing you can do is follow those gut feelings. If something doesn’t feel quite right to you, it probably isn’t worth taking the leap. Buying a car probably comes second to buying a house - so you’ll want to get it right.

If like me you enjoy the combination of Action and mind-tricky Sci-Fi, you’ll definitely want to see this movie. Starring the brilliant Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, it is packed full of excitement and suspense. The story follows an officer who goes by the name Lt. Col. Bill Cage. He has never gone to battle before, until he is demoted and thrown right into the war zone, with little to equip and no prior training. Earth has currently been under attack from an alien race known as Mimics,

Cage finds himself stuck in a time loop, that causes him to continuously return to the battlefield in a deja vu-like state, every time he’s struck down by the Mimics. Being a rookie soldier, he is terminated quickly - on multiple occasions, until he and Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski catch on to the pattern and figure out their best strategy. Upon multiple revivals, Rita, being the toughest and most successful soldier, decides to train Cage as much as possible, to turn him into the ultimate weapon. Each battle gets them closer to discovering the secret to exterminating their invaders, and could help them to save the world.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit If you didn’t catch it at the cinema, now is your chance to catch it on DVD and Blu Ray. This film is an actionpacked, serious rollercoaster of a movie. It follows CIA analyst Jack Ryan, whilst he attends the London School of Economics. He is enlisted into the Marines after 9/11 happens and is sent to Afghanistan. On his journey there, his chopper is shot down and his injuries place him into intense rehabilitation. Upon meeting a man from the CIA named Harper, he is appointed a job on Wall Street to seek out any terrorist plots through their finances. When years later, he uncovers something unusual in the accounts of a Russian man named Cherevin, he has to go to Russia to figure out what is going on. He is asked to withhold his identity, even from his girlfriend Cathy, but she gradually begins to doubt his honesty. After Cherevin hires a hitman to deal with Jack, it is clear that something is definitely going on. When Jack is forced to bring Cathy with him, the danger increases and they are met with more than they could have expected... 35
