OmniLocal - Kingston Upon Thames • June 2016
Dear All Once again, we arrive at the time of the year where Kingston goes bonkers! The sun is shining, and there is much positivity about recently. It feels like a great time to open the windows and let some fresh air blast through our lives, clear out all those dark cobwebs and have some fun! – (Not to mention the recent half terms and holidays!) With the IYAF kicking off soon (see advert on page 2), The Kingston Business Expo (Page 34), Father’s Day and all the sports on the horizon I think this must be a favourited time of the year. At Omni, we have been busy launching the Breakfast Networking Groups and I have to say I am really pleased with the results! Again, I have to thank so many people, but this month I would like to say a special Thank You to Felicity Leicester! You won’t have heard of Felicity much, but she is becoming a very important part of the magazine. She is now managing all the new advertisers and she has been responsible for all the new local businesses you can find in the magazine. – Thank You Fel. You will see this month we have a couple of new adverts from Time for You cleaning on page 30, a concert from Instant Shine on page 24, our new friends from First Exchange in the Bentalls Centre, and a new Chefs Corner from Bentalls too. On top of everything packed into this issue, you MUST check out this month’s competition! There is a new Indian restaurant in town…. well, in Chessington. We have been there and I promise you, if you win this month’s prize you will have a awesome evening. Just check out the competition on page 40. While I am talking food, don’t forget to visit Peppe (page 42) - His Italian food is simply the best in Kingston. Thank you so much for your continued support, and look out for next month’s issue, where we will have our annual Summer Pull out of all the events happening throughout July & August! LOCAL BUSINESS
This section is all about local business owners who support Omni Local. This month I am talking to security expert, Enzo Pozella of Nolt Ltd Security.
Supplied by: Enzo Pozella Nolt Ltd Security
NOLT SECURITY
Q1: Hello Enzo, could you please tell our readers a little about Nolt Security?
COMMERCIAL - RESIDENTIAL - RETAIL - TRADE - SCHOOLS
CCTV | ACCESS CONTROL | GATES AUTOMATION | FENCING REPAIRS & NETWORKING
A1: Hello, Nolt is a local, family run business we’ve run for over twelve years. We specialise in CCTV, Access control, security fencing and gates, as well as fault finding. Most of our work comes from recommendations and advertising in Omni Local. We offer turnkey solutions through design, installation and maintenance.

YEARS
WWW.NOLT.CO.UK 0208 224 1289 - 07949 097 183
A2: I fell into the industry in my early twenty’s through a friend; I have always been interested in electronics and gadgets, a far cry from my warehousing/building/managing/ plumbing and roofing days.
A5: Yes, CCTV is a great way to deter unwanted visitors and assist the police in catching criminals. Security lighting and use of LED floodlights can be much more cost effective and reliable. Don’t be complacent check locks and windows, back gates, plant roses bushes, chat with neighbours and help each other. Join your local Neighbourhood Watch or start up a group.
Q3: What sort of clientele do you provide services for?
Q6: Do you have any advice for readers who are looking to get into a similar field?
A3: We mainly provide services for local businesses, local schools and authorities; also blue chip companies and local residential areas.
A6: Looking at getting an apprenticeship would be a good way of learning the trade, and then you can decide whether you would be more interested in installation or the servicing side. Also, as the industry is progressing, some IT knowledge is very useful.
Q2: What interested you in this line of work?
Q4: What is the most common problem clients need help with? A4: We always ask the customer what they want the system to do and what they are trying to achieve with it, then we design the system around them and their needs, as specifications and design can be a very grey area if you do not understand the industry.
Q7: Excellent! What is the best way for people to get in touch with you?
Q5: Is there any general advice you could give to our readers to improve their home security?
To find out more about Nolt Security and what they have to offer, please refer to their advert above.
A7: The easiest way is via e-mail, the website or telephone….enzo@nolt.co.uk…. www.nolt.co.uk….02082241289

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY
THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: CHARITY Leanna Carl - Omni Local
Caring for Causes There are so many important causes that need support, but it’s hard to do your bit for all of them. Consider helping to raise awareness and holding fundraisers for all the national awareness months throughout the UK. This month marks SANDS Awareness Month. SANDS (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society) works towards increasing awareness about stillbirths and neonatal deaths, as well as the lasting impact they have on expectant mothers, partners, and any family or friends involved. It is devastating to lose a child during pregnancy or at birth, and though many are aware of the facts, a lot of people are less informed, as it isn’t a comfortable topic for people to discuss. SANDS have made excellent progress in spreading the word, but they still need help. More than 100 babies are lost every week and raising vital funds to support families, continue research and improve statistics is crucial. This June you can attend the Annual SANDS Rememberance Service, and Garden Open Day - held at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire on 11th June. Various orange-themed events are being held this month for the cause, such as: - The Walk a Mile in My Shoes event: A special walk that invites families, friends, colleagues and individuals to help raise money for support services and improve bereavement care all over the UK.
- Orange Challenges: Get your friends and family to sponsor you to sit in a bath of baked beans or orange juice, wear orange every single day throughout June, or invite them all round for an orange dinner, and accept donations for the cause. You could cook meals that require butternut squash, carrots, pumpkin, smoked salmon, sweet potatoes, orange cheddar, tangerines or apricots. Other events include the Great East Swim and Edinburgh Night Cycle. SANDS is also launching a Research Fund to spearhead vital projects and initiatives, aid in improvements and see that a lot more babies’ lives will be saved in future. See exactly what’s on this month and help the cause by visiting uk-sands.org.
- Bake 4 Sands: Bake carrot cakes, chocolate orange crispies, and other orange-themed baked goods to raise money for the cause. - Social Media: Why not encourage your friends to take orange selfies, and caption the pictures telling people to donate to the cause? Maybe you could use these as your profile photo for the duration of June to spread awareness? - Orange Dress-down Day: Charge £2 and have everyone wear orange for the day at the office, school or nursery. You could even encourage stronger participation by providing a prize for best dressed, or most creative outfit.

COMMUNITY PERSON
Sophie King
Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
This month’s Community Person focus is Sophie King. Sophie is a 27 year old management consultant and part-time model from South Croydon who made her dreams come true and recently became Miss Surrey! Sophie has degrees from both Warwick and Durham Universities and is passionate about where she lives. After being named Miss Surrey, she is now preparing to compete in the finals of Miss Great Britain 2016 at the Athena in Leicester. “I am so excited about the chance to represent Surrey and be an ambassador for our county. Miss Great Britain is a wonderful opportunity; it gives me a chance to stand up and tell people what great things we have here in Surrey and what a brilliant place it is to live.”
“These days there is such a negative stereotype associated with pageants, but I am proud to be a part of this national institution. I have two degrees and a great job, I joined MENSA when I was 11, I’m a feminist, a woman with leadership aspirations and a woman wanting to have a family – Why can’t we be it all?”
Miss Great Britain is the longest running pageant in the UK. Having launched in 1945, the competition is now celebrating its 71st anniversary this year.
“Breaking the mould is not always easy and will require the county’s support as well as that of my friends and family, but it will be worth it!” You can support Sophie by making a £1 donation to her campaign for Make Some Noise, a national charity that helps disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. If you’d like to contribute, text ‘SURY71 £1’ to 70070. You can also find Sophie on social media at www.facebook.com/officialsophieking, www.instagram.com/officialsophieking or www.twitter.com/MissSurrey2016 for news, updates and more information about the campaign.

LOCAL CHARITY
THIS MONTH’S CHARITY Supplied by:
Kingston Samaritans – what we do and why we need your help
Tony Baden - Samaritans
As the Kingston branch of the Samaritans, we have been active in the Borough since 1968. Unfortunately, in recent years the suicide rate has increased. There are well over three times as many deaths from suicide as from deaths on the roads in England. We do not just help those who are feeling suicidal but also those in distress or despair and who may be going through a particularly difficult time in their lives. Our callers often tell us they have nowhere else to turn. We are ordinary people trained to help some of our most vulnerable residents by uniquely providing confidential, non-judgemental emotional support 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. Our freephone number is 116 123. Our local initiatives include:
The demand for our service is growing. Last year Kingston Samaritans responded to over 43,000 callers by telephone, email, text and a few face to face visitors to our branch. This summer we are moving to 2 Wheatfield Way, Kingston. From there we will be able to expand our outreach support in the local community. Kingston Samaritans are part of the national Samaritans organisation. But we are a charity in our own right and raise all our own funds to cover running costs. This year we are making a huge fund-raising effort to secure a further £100,000 to enable us to fully deliver our service from this new location. So far we have raised over £14,000 through volunteer fundraising events and donations.
• Giving talks to young people in schools and colleges throughout the Borough. • Supporting GPs, Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services, therapists and counsellors who signpost patients to us out of hours. • Supporting vulnerable people over the Christmas period at the Kingston Safe and Sound project.
• Partnership with the Surbiton YMCA, providing support for their clients.
Donations to Kingston Samaritans would be much appreciated through Virgin Money Giving which is accessible via our website samaritans.org/Kingston, or Just Giving at justgiving.com/kingstonsamaritans or Local Giving at localgiving.org/charity/ kingstonsamaritans.
• Working with Wandsworth Prison, by training and supporting selected prisoners to act as Listeners within the prison.
If you would like to volunteer to be a Samaritan please visit our website www. samaritans.org/kingston.
• Providing on-site support and training for Network Rail staff and passengers following incidents, or when there is someone showing suicidal behaviour.

LOVE KINGSTON
Love Kingston today and tomorrow
Supplied by: Sorrel Parsons - Omni Local
Being connected to where we live, work and learn creates healthy and happy communities. Sadly too many residents in our rapidly growing, ageing and diversifying borough are isolated from both people and place. Losing loved ones, language barriers and mental health are just some of the challenges local people face. That’s why our next phase of grantmaking is supporting projects tackling isolation and encouraging integration. You can help us reach residents on the margins today and connect them with the borough we know and love. Love Kingston is a fund supporting the changing needs of communities for generations to come. Why might you give through us? By giving to Love Kingston you can: • Choose where your money goes and see it making a difference
18 cyclists will be taking part in this year’s RideLondon Surrey 100 on Sunday 31st July for Love Kingston and we have a number of sponsorship opportunities available for local businesses to support our amazing team.
• Support a vast range of projects from grassroots initiatives to social enterprises and large established charities • Donate from as little as £1 a month!
Celebrating the legacy for cycling created by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the event follows a 100-mile route on closed roads through the capital and into Surrey’s stunning countryside.
• Invest for immediate impact or into an endowment fund for the long term • Meet those you support and find out more about the issues they face • Trust us with the due diligence and monitoring of grantees to ensure that your donations are spent wisely and for maximum benefit • Give independently or in collaboration with others • Meet other donors or remain entirely anonymous
It’s a feat of stamina and endurance to complete the race in 8 and a half hours. What our riders said last year “I was so proud to take part in this gruelling 100 mile race to raise funds for Love Kingston. The work that they do supporting local charity and community projects across the borough is amazing” Nathalie Wilson “We think the real heroes were the marshals, helpers, supporters along the road sides... Our spirits were raised as we cycled through Kingston as the support from local residents was tremendous” Mike Levitt, local business Asana Health
• And finally. . .giving through us is tax effective! www.love-kingston.org.uk is a Fund of The London Community Foundation (Registered Charity No. 1091263) working in partnership with Kingston Voluntary Action.

LOCAL HISTORY
The Queen in Kingston With all the celebrations for the Queen’s 90th birthday in April, I thought it would be appropriate this month to look at Her Majesty’s visits to Kingston during her reign.
Supplied by: Mike Seigel - Kingston Tour Guides
Last month I wrote about the coronation of the Saxon kings, and I should perhaps begin by pointing out that when the Queen’s greatgrandfather, Edward VII, was crowned in 1902 there were those in Kingston who liked to point out that this was exactly a thousand years after the crowing of Edward the Elder, perhaps in Kingston. Edward VII is not known to have visited Kingston, but his son George V did in 1927 when he reconfirmed the royal status of the borough, and you can see this recorded on the façade above Jack Wills in the Market Place. His son George VI, the Queen’s father, came with his wife (who became the Queen Mother) in 1948 to open the Power Station, now defunct and demolished. And so to our Queen: her first visit was in 1961 to mark the 400th anniversary of the founding of Kingston Grammar School by her predecessor and namesake Elizabeth I – whom you will also see on the Jack Wills façade as one of the monarchs associated with our town. Elizabeth II returned to KGS in 2005 to open a new Performing Arts Block. In 1992 the Queen came, in the 40th year of her reign, arriving by boat along the river, and the writer was then very privileged to be invited to a reception at the Guildhall where he met Her Majesty. This took place in the Queen Anne suite, another of the previous Queens of England associated with our town, as so clearly seen by her striking gilded statue above the Market House. A decade later, in her Golden Jubilee year, the Queen revisited and delighted shoppers when she wandered round the Ancient Market Palace and also attended a service at All Saints. So our town can boast several visits from the Queen, and it is therefore most fitting that the Mayor lit a beacon on her birthday from a barge in the Thames to honour her very special day!
11
If you would like to discover more about various royal connections and other interesting pieces of history as you walk around our town, why not join one of our tours, led by specially trained volunteers? The tours start outside the church gates in the Ancient Market Place at 11am every Sunday in summer and on every first Sunday of the month from October to March. The charge is £5 per adult - or perhaps you might to arrange a walk for a group of your own friends. For further information on all our walks and talks please ring 020 8399 0160. We have recently revamped our website, and this is now visible and available for bookings – just google www.kingston-tour-guides.org.uk

ARTS
June in Kingston means ART!
Supplied by: Alison Pugh - KAOS
On the weekends of 11th, 12th, 18th and 19th of June over 70 artists and makers will open their homes, studios, sheds and spare rooms to the art loving public of Kingston, and beyond. Painters, printmakers, photographers, sculptors, ceramicists, textile artists, glass artists, from KAOS, ASC, and Fusion Arts will be showing their work in 13 venues in and around Kingston. Having Open Studios is a wonderful opportunity for artists and makers to share what we do with the general public and with each other. Working alone for most of the year, it’s great to spend two relaxing weekends sharing ideas and meeting art lovers. It is also a great opportunity for us artists and makers to ‘Spring clean’ our studios and present our work, so that we can take stock of what we have created over the past year. There is a huge and wonderfully eclectic variety of work on show, with something sure to suite every taste and pocket, from tiny to huge. And if you don’t see anything to tempt you, then works may be commissioned. Many of our
13
artists have taken part in exhibitions all over the world, including the prestigious Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy in London, so as well as something you would love on your wall, you may even be buying a future investment! If for some reason you cannot make it to the Open Studios there will be a ‘taster exhibition’ upstairs in the art space and gallery above Cass Art in Kingston town centre. If you live in the area, you will receive a flyer through your door, or alternatively you can pick up a catalogue at Kingston museum, the library, Cass Art, Pullingers or one of the many cafés around town. Our trail map is included, or can be downloaded from www. kingstonartistsopenstudios.co.uk/show. So, come and see us – if you visit at least 4 venues, you’re in with a chance to win £100 worth of art. All the studios will be open from11-5pm on all four days.

HOME
Spring Cleaning for the Summer
Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
The temperature is definitely on the rise... so why not give your house a freshen up and get things organised for the warmer weather? The more clutter-free space in your house, the more likely you are to keep positive and active throughout the Summer. Its always a good idea to keep your eye on the way things are running – so make sure you set aside some time to run through your list. Below are some ideas on how to start. through our DIY sections or get in touch with one of Omni’s local professionals, from boiler repairing to electricians.
Make sure you’re prepared Invest in all the necessary cleaning aids, such as gloves, sponges, scourers, cloths, detergents, aprons and so on. Don’t forget the tough jobs like oven cleaning!
Take Breaks A whole house-cleaning can be tiring so make sure you take a lunch/coffee break at some point, and don’t overdo it!
Stock up on plenty of bin/recycling bags You should never start tidying without a good amount of bin bags handy, as you could find yourself in need of a shopping trip halfway through, or you may get disorganised. There may be a lot of mess in one room, so work gradually. Start from the inside
Always clean the floors last There is nothing worse than vacuuming or mopping and getting the carpets/flooring looking like new, then realising you have some shelf dusting to do or you haven’t changed the bedsheets. Take care of your equipment
Cleaning out the inside of your house before you get to work outside can stop things you’ve just cleaned from getting dirty again. (Imagine those muddy footprints getting tracked in!)
From your broom to your mop, forgetting to wring it out or letting it get covered in cobwebs will put you off using it. Avoid leaving sponges soaking in water overnight aswell, as bacteria thrives in moist environments.
Multitask Don’t spend your whole weekend doing the tough jobs, make youself a list and prioritse to-dos. Multitasking helps a lot, such as starting up the washing machine whilst you clean the bathroom, then putting in a new load of laundry before you hang the wet clothes out.
Make things more enjoyable
Repairs If you’re worried about taking care of things yourself, find what you need by backtracking
14
Try to create your ideal working playlist, or switch on your favourite radio station – whistling while you work, or belting out whilst cleaning out is a sure fire way to make things a little more bearable and will make the whole process go a lot quicker. Or, why not see if you can get some help? Certain jobs can be done in pairs and could actually be fun!

LEARNING
Want your child to have fun learning?
Supplied by: Celia Osbourne NumberWorks’n’Words
With this year’s controversial SATS you could be forgiven for thinking the fun has been sucked out of learning. 11 year olds are grappling with questions about clauses, adverbs and prepositions, whilst 7 year olds are expected to be able to ‘expand’ a ‘noun clause’. What’s happened to fun and creativity? Where is fun in the curriculum? Lots of 7 year olds love writing stories but with the focus on correct apostrophes, full stops and adjectives, the fun’s been lost. Some schools are even promising year 6 that they can write stories after their SATS - in other words, as a treat! So what can you do to help? You may not be able to re-write the curriculum but at NumberWorks’nWords we believe that learning can and should be fun and creative, and if you feel the same, try some of these creative ideas at home to help re-inspire your child.
brook.’ Write them down or just enjoy the laughs. Children love coming up with their own silly poems. Make them laugh
Help them write
You could even help them inject a few adjectives and descriptive phrases to make it even better – but don’t overdo it!!
At NumberWorks’nWords we love tapping into what makes kids laugh whether that’s silly stories, drawings or poems. Yes of course grammar is important and we certainly don’t neglect it but it’s also about developing their descriptions and vocabulary. And even more importantly it’s about getting them engaged, interested and dare I say it, having fun!
Drawing ‘story boards’
Put the fun back into learning.
Budding artists often like to plan their stories through pictures. Fold a paper in 4 and get them to draw their story: your child can then dictate the text to you.
Bring your child for a free assessment and see what we do. It’s fun. I promise.
By doing the writing for them! Really. If your child’s got great ideas but struggles getting them down on paper, let them dictate them. It’ll fire up their creative juices and they’ll love hearing them read back.
Poems Create silly poems using loads of rhymes whilst you cook or drive. Take inspiration from things around you, ‘There’s a fish on that lorry, and he’s really very sorry because he left his favourite book, in the middle of a 15

GARDENING
June Gardening Tips
Supplied by: Janet Bacon
The risk of frost has gone and longer days ensure that the growing season is well and truly with us. So now is the time to sit back and enjoy the results, although, in order to keep it looking good there is always something to do, whether it is pruning, tidying or watering. Plant Pots/Hanging Baskets If you have not already done this it is time to plant out your pots and hanging baskets using a loam-based compost, as it is easier to keep watered than peatbased and add some water storage gel/ crystals. Remember to water pots and hanging baskets at least once a day in hot weather and feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks.
Pond maintenance
The choice of plants depends on whether you are putting the pots in sunshine or shade. Geraniums, Lobelia, silverleaved plants do best in sunshine whereas fuchsias and Bizzy Lizzies cope with shade. The colour of the pot can also help tie together a planting scheme to give a bigger impact. Deadhead roses June is traditionally the month when roses are at their peak. Removing the flowers as they fade will keep your display looking good and encourage more blooms. Snap off just below the head - this is thought to make new blooms appear more quickly than the classic method of cutting just above a leaf.
Keep removing Blanketweed or Algae from your pond to allow the plants and fish room to breathe and ideally top-up ponds with rainwater. Floating algae are easily removed by twirling them out of the pond with a cane, but leave this on the side of the pond for a day to allow any insects trapped to get back into the pond. As a Garden Designer with over 20 years experience, I offer exclusive designs to reflect the style and period of your house and individual taste, according to your requirements and budget; which ranges from the modification of a flowerbed to a complete new garden. To get in touch with Janet Bacon Garden Design and find more ways to improve on your garden, please call 020 8393 7970 or email j.bacon@tiscali.co.uk.
Watering To conserve water, water the soil rather than the plants and make ‘ponds’ around individual plants so that the water can really soak in to a great depth. Remember also to keep bird baths topped up. 17

Building a DVD Case
Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
Why not use your crafting skills to put together a simple storage solution for your Dad’s DVD and Blu Ray collection? Or alternatively, use these steps as a way to organise your movies, books or ornaments during your Spring cleaning. What You’ll Need: Plywood Sheets (approx 1.25cm thick), Wood Glue, Pencil, Drill, Screws, A Ruler, Nail Gun, Drill Bits, Saw, Tape Measure, Screws Method: 1. Cut down the shelves so that you have: two 35.5cm x 20cm pieces for the base/top, four- 33cm x 17.5cm shelves, two 115cm x 17.5cm sides; and one 115cm x 20cm backing. These parts should build a unit to fit more than 100 DVDs so plan according to the size you need. 2. For the base, measure 1.25cm from both sides, marking with a pencil, and make another line down the centre of the base. Attach the sides and backing lengthways onto the line marks using glue, and secure them using a nail gun on the underside of the base. 3. Next, glue the 35.5cm x 20cm top pieces along the edges of the three sides, creating a full four-sided crate. Secure with the nail gun and drill in some pilot holes with a
18
countersink bit, then fix the top piece on to the dividers using the screws. 4. Use a tape measure and pencil to mark out where you want the four shelves to sit, evening out so that the spaces between each shelf make up about of the unit. To make things easier, draw a line across the mark, using a ruler to mark out where the shelf sits. 5. Take one of your shelves and glue along the mark made on the inside. Secure with your nail gun, then secure with screws, as done in step 3. Once completed, you can treat the wood or paint it - just leave plenty of time for it to dry before presenting it if this is a gift for someone.

HEALTH & FITNESS
“Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” This was the question that burns at the heart of our human existence asked by Rod Stewart in 1978.
Supplied by: Andrew Sillett - On Sight Media
In Rod’s case, the answer is surely an emphatic ‘No!’ This question is topical once again, as the beautiful people who seem to have been hibernating all winter come out and parade their gorgeous bodies in the sunshine. On one level it’s wonderful, encouraging and distracting. On another it’s a bit disconcerting and depressing when you realise that your body is not having quite the same effect. What to do? Well, as you’ve probably guessed if you’ve been reading this PhysioExtra series of health and fitness of articles, the answer is: get a personal trainer. Another question: what is the main motivator for working out?
The fact is that committing yourself to a session where someone stands over you and tells you what to do is almost certainly going to beat your own powers of commitment and resolve. PhysioExtra has a team of friendly studio personal trainers who have a knack of encouraging people, normally averse to exercise, to push themselves.
A) To be healthier B) more energetic C) less stressed or D) sexier? “For ninety percent of people it’s mainly about looking good,” says Leon Almashan of PhysioExtra. It seems most of us have hidden shallows, but perhaps vanity is not all bad when it motivates people to exercise. And motivation is the key to looking good and staying that way. Does this cycle sound familiar?
The ‘extra’ in PhysioExtra refers to the physiotherapy expertise they have at hand to resolve niggles that stop people training or help avoid or repair injuries. “Working out tones you up, improves your posture, but most of all gives you selfconfidence,” says Almashan. “If you feel confident, this makes you more attractive.” Well it certainly seemed to work for Rod.
1. Get a bit fat over the winter 2. Feel inspired/ashamed enough to work out 3. Look much better, swagger about feeling smug 4. Slack off 5. Repeat
So if you want to be sexier this summer, personal training might be a better investment than new clothes, a makeover, a new hairdo… or desperately having bits of your body lopped off by a cosmetic surgeon. The first consultation is free and PhysioExtra also run a £10 Saturday morning bootcamp on at Ham Common (again the first session is free.)
You would have thought that an activity that dramatically improves mental and physical wellbeing would be more popular, but it is really hard to motivate yourself to exercise. Which is why a personal trainer is a great option.

FOREVER LIVING Supplied by: Carole McGrath - Forever Living
A Life in the Day of Adam May - successful, inspirational businessman! A picture speaks a thousand words Adam, but can you enlighten us more? Every year, Forever allows us the opportunity to qualify for 2 free global trips! One was in Johannesburg May 2016, the other was in Cancun 2015! It’s an opportunity to mingle with the best of the best and also catch up with friends from all over the world. What is the secret to your success? Success in anything is never easy. When I started, very part time, I found a spare 15 hours a week by watching less TV and spending less time socializing. I used the time productively and in less than 2 years I was able to give up my job and go full time, which in turn grew my income exponentially. How did you discover Forever? I was shown the Forever opportunity by a friend and I realized quite quickly that it had huge potential. I knew that my life wasn’t giving me what I wanted. If I kept following the same routine, nothing would change. I was lucky, I was open minded enough to look, otherwise the opportunity might have passed me by. How has Forever impacted your life? The big thing it’s given me is control of my life; financially and time wise. If I want to go on holiday for a month or two I can! In a traditional career that’s impossible to do: it’s either lots of money but no time, or no money and lots of time. Has it helped your health? I’m 55, and I can honestly say I feel fitter and healthier than I did in my early 30’s. Using our products has given me more energy, kept me mobile and pain free, they have improved my quality of life! Has it helped you grow as a person? I’ve learned that you cannot grow a career or a business unless you grow yourself. A famous business philosopher said ‘To have more than you’ve got, become more than you are’, I totally endorse that. Not only have I grown hugely as a person, I have also helped others to grow and become successful too.
21
What has Forever enabled you to do? Travel the world, privately educate my children and build a legacy, all by helping others. What could be better? Adam, thank you for sharing this with us. SPECIAL FEATURE
Father’s Day
Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
Sunday 19th June marks this year’s Father’s Day 2016. There has been a lot of discussion about the importance of the date and comparisons with Mother’s Day, but I think the main reason for this is that Dad’s don’t always give us much help when it comes to planning the perfect day and the perfect gift. How it Began Scholars believe the origin of Father’s Day can be traced back to 4,000 years ago, after a well-wishing Father’s Day message, written in clay by a young boy named Elmesu was recorded. However, there is no evidence to say what happened to the boy and his Father. The more modern version of the day originated in the USA. Supposedly the special occasion is all thanks to the efforts of Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd, from Washington. At 27 years old, Ms Dodd found herself wondering why we spent a full day each year honouring our Mothers and not our Fathers. Her own Father, William Jackson Smart was a Civil War veteran who raised her well after her mother died giving birth, whilst Sonora was just 16. He raised 6 children by himself with a lot of love, and Sonora wanted to give back. She was inspired by Anna Jarvis’ struggle to spread word of Mother’s Day, and started a campaign to celebrate Fathers throughout the US.
The Spokane Ministerial Association and YMCA gave her full support, leading to the first Father’s Day celebration for Spokane on 19th June 1910. She was honoured for her contribution at the World’s Fair in Spokane in 1974. The occasion has since grown in popularity, and has lead to giftgiving and family activities to celebrate Dads everywhere. Gift Ideas It can be really hard to get this right! However, you’ve got to remember: it really is the thought that counts. For example, don’t waste a ton of money on a gift you know he’ll tell you off for buying – make something instead, or order him his favourite takeaway. You could spend some time with your younger siblings/children helping them create arts and crafts or homemade cards, or you could put together a nice collage. Why not order him a photo mug, personalised glass or keyring to make him feel special – something he can keep and re-use, that will remind him of his loving family is guaranteed to be a winner. Have a look online and gather some ideas, with technology its so simple these days!

Some people like to create special Father’s Day coupons. These could include offers of breakfast in bed, an hour at a time of complete control over the TV, or offers to make cups of tea and do chores – whatever you’re willing to do, and you think will make him smile. This way, you’ve not spent any more than you can afford, and you get to show how much you love him through kindness and attention. For those who have sadly lost their Fathers, why not spend some time reminiscing with your family and telling great stories about him? If you’re wondering how to celebrate this year - try asking your Dad what he wants. He could respond with anything as simple as a lay-in, to a meal with the family. In the past I have celebrated by making his favourite dinner, me and my siblings have taken him for a meal or to the movies, maybe even just gone for a pint (this only really
23
applies to the older generation, but is always a nice way to celebrate with him). However you plan on celebrating, make sure you don’t phone it in. Show him how much you care and plan some fun, family time for yourself this month. Start brainstorming now, and have a Happy Father’s Day everyone.

One for those who like a bit of romance! This movie has been long awaited by readers of the book, as well as Game of Thrones and Hunger Games fans; the reason being our leading roles – Emilia Clarke (Louisa Clark) and Sam Claflin (Will Traynor). Quirky and likeable Louisa, or “Lou” is a knowledgable young woman from a small town and is even aware of how many footsteps it takes to get from the bus stop
Meanwhile, Will Traynor is a joyless man, who suffered a terrible motorcycle accident. This has left him paralysed, and he no longer sees the point in living an exciting life. Even travelling to the places he loves most is far too daunting to consider anymore. Little does he know, a whirlwind of colour with an all round lust for life is about to break down the walls he has been hiding behind for so long. RESIDENTIAL ACCOUNTANT
Loss of Profits When one talks about Loss of Profits; the idea of Fire or Flood damage immediately springs to mind; but it should be remembered that a Breach of Contract can also result in a loss of profits. Nothing could be worse than suffering a close down of a factory due to fire or flood; and then having your customer or supplier sue you for Breach of Contract. As a result both customers and suppliers should carefully word their contracts if they are to effectively include or exclude claims for Loss of Profits. Firms should regularly review their insurance cover and more especially any exclusions; to ensure that their cover is adequate. Too often firms go bust after a Fire or Flood because of inadequate or non-existent insurance cover. Assuming that one is adequately insured; what actions have been taken to minimise or mitigate the loss? Can one continue to trade from an alternative address? (We constantly advise clients to create and update a “Disaster Recovery” procedure to be kept out of office.) Was all the computer based data backed up and off site? reliable (including stock control); the greater the reliance that can be placed upon them when making a claim. Another area often not considered is whether the business is holding 3rd party stock and or assets. If so, how are these insured; and is any insurance agreement suitably documented. Unfortunately this is an area that is often ignored or forgotten by businesses. When making the Insurance claim; has the claim been meticulously detailed or is it vague and amorphous? If the latter, the insurance company will reject or down value that part of the claim. Finally, has it been prepared and submitted by, or with the approval of a firm of Accountants who will stand by their workings in a Court of Law?

TRAVEL
Travelling this Summer? Many of you are probably planning vacations over the next few months, and why not? With school holidays to look forward to, exams soon to be out of the way, and many of us needing a well-earned break from work during the warmer weather, now is as good a time as any to start thinking about the possibilities. You may even find yourself considering taking a gap year soon, as the end of the term is on it’s way, people are realising how many Summers they’ve spent in their current occupation, and a lot of us are weighing out our options and thinking about where life might take us next. There are so many sights to soak up this Summer, and experiences to be had. You could go to Asia and enjoy the diverse cultures, ecology and delicious delicacies; visit the US for the big business, tall buildings and urban life; head to Australia for energetic cities, coastal lifestyles and Aboriginal heritage; or travel around Europe, enjoying beer festivals, landmarks, arts and fashion. Whether you’re interested in taking a year for yourself after college/university, you want to explore the world or do something different for a living - or you’re just looking for a wellearned career-break, the world really is your ‘oyster’. The important thing is that you put plenty of thought into what you want to do and make plenty of preparations. You might be interested in doing some volunteer work, taking care of children or animals, or you could be looking into taking courses or working abroad for a while. You could book yourself an adventure tour of

some kind, or obtain a working holiday visa. Either way, research is important and it doesn’t hurt to seek professional advice to make sure things run smoothly. Consider all you are going to need. Working abroad can be an exciting way to branch out into other cultures, turn over a new leaf and live like one of the locals, but you still need to ensure you’re equipped with a fair understanding of the area, and you’ll need to sort out your finances, i.e. money exchanging/savings. You can find help with this from businesses like First Exchange UK. Now is as good a time as any to consider getting away/having a bit of a change-up, as there are plenty of early bird offers floating around for holidays later in the year, for those who aren’t tied-up with school term times. Are you worried about the Lifetime and Annual Allowance charges? Are you trying to manage your assets with greater control whilst minimising tax? We concentrate on transparency and accountability, minimising your charges and putting you in the driving seat in making informed choices and decisions about your future. We will help you with a focus on the four essential pillars of modern day financial planning. Financial planning – This allows you to clarify your future objectives and goals with greater clarity rather than just focusing on products you may have bought in the past. This would include regularly addressing changes in personal circumstances and the effects of future budget changes, taxation and legislation. Cash-flow modelling – following the financial plan, the cashflow modelling allows you to model your existing and future income, expenditures, assets and liabilities and taxes. By modelling these, you can make decisions about the future for you and your family with greater certainty and aims to make sure you never run out of money. It also enables you to implement tax optimisation strategies. Money management – This will enable you to manage all your investments including ISAs, pensions and properties in a tax efficient manner and manage them with your objectives and timescales in mind whilst mitigating taxes and reducing risk. Estate planning – This is essential in the modern world. How can you retain control over your assets and direct them to your

future generations whilst minimising Inheritance Tax? In addition, it is important to address how you can pass your assets down the bloodline and away from potential future disasters like divorces of your children, grandchildren and future generations by using family-controlled trusts. So, what’s the next step? A good start is to have an initial meeting with Mukesh Savani, a Senior Consultant with over 28 years of financial services experience specialising in these areas. He can provide an initial Discovery meeting free of cost to you. After which, it would be clear if there are issues to be addressed and then you can work together on creating a strategy and timescale of actions. Protecting your family’s future and giving you back control over your future can be more straight-forward than you think. If you would like to learn more about your options and opportunities, please get in touch. Peace of Mind for the Price of a Coffee
Supplied by: Lucie White & Company
The number of UK households renting from private landlords is at a 30-year high. If you are one of those landlords, you’ll know that it’s a challenging job with a considerable level of responsibility. We asked property expert Lucie White to explain why using a property manager is sometimes better than struggling on alone. For some, being a landlord is a chosen path; a career entered into with eyes wide open and the appropriate amount of energy and enthusiasm. For others, it’s a role they have fallen into, almost by accident – perhaps as the result of holding onto a previous residence or as part of retirement planning. Often it is something that is undertaken alongside the ‘day job’, or juggled with raising a family and looking after a main home.
• You have more properties than you can handle.
What many accidental landlords don’t realise is that managing a rental property is similar to running a small business, with all the practical and legal responsibilities that entails. From the moment a property is advertised for rent until the day the keys are given to a tenant, there are 145 pieces of UK legislation that apply – this is not a process to enter into without proper thought! Employing a property manager can be a great way to ensure that your responsibilities as a landlord are carried out and your investment is properly cared for. Here are some key reasons why handing over the reins might be a good move:
Contrary to popular belief, property management needn’t be expensive; most of our clients pay no more than they would for their daily cappuccino. For that, their investment is looked after by someone who has the right knowledge and experience, who can devote the necessary time and attention and who can send someone to fix a leaky tap at the drop of a hat. If you’d like to find out how our property management services could work for you, get in touch for a free, no-obligation chat.
• You live too far away from the property to get there quickly if you’re needed.
Lucie White is the owner and founder of Lucie White & Company, offering property services and advice to private landlords across South West London and Surrey. Visit lucie@luciewhite.com or call 020 8549 8064.
• Your job, family or other commitments take up much of your time.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
Saffron Summer The launch of Saffron Summer Haute Cuisine Indian Restaurant took off with a fusion twist on Wednesday 18th May. Completely refurbished throughout, the new owner, Ralph Sousa has transformed it into a modern, stylish restaurant, for those who enjoy fine-dining without the hassle of travelling into London to find it. The opening of this stunning restaurant was attended by the Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames, Councillor Geoff Austin and the Mayoress, Sheila Austin; together with various others guests, including Jackie Quinn, president of the Leatherhead COC, who enjoyed an array of delicious street food snacks, canapes and bowls to sample a variety of Indian and Asian contemporary delights. The renowned Executive Chef, Awanish Roy served exquisite starters, superbly presented, which were absolutely delicious. Everything from Tandoori Guinea Fowl Tikka and Wild Boar Vindaloo to more traditional Lamb Seekh Kebabs and Tikkas. Each dish was specially crafted using quality ingredients. There are 29 states in India, and their food is influenced by their religions and traditions. Awanish has created a fine fusion, which also combines the Indo Chinese influence. Yet despite the contemporary haute cuisine, the
prices are very reasonable and right here in the suburbs. Saffron Summer’s daytime menu looks very different, with an array of Indian tapas–style dishes with a street food influence, such as Mumbai delicacy and Sev Batata Puri. Ideal for those looking for something new and good value-for-money. Takeaway service and nearby parking available. Open 7 days a week.
