LOCAL BUSINESS

This month we are talking to Celia Osborne of Numberworks’n’words Surbiton

Supplied by: Celia Osborne - Numberworksnwords

Q1: Hi Celia, could you please tell our readers a little bit about NumberWorks’nWords? A1: The aim behind NumberWorks’nWords is to help children boost their confidence and skills with maths and English in an enjoyable way. It’s after-school (and Saturday morning) tuition, works at each child’s individual pace and towards their own goals in a fun interactive way. We work with children from reception to GCSE. Q2: How long have you been in this line of business now? A2: I took over this company in 2009 after teaching in a London primary school for 23 years where I was head of English and also had a lot of responsibility for children with special needs. I loved the classroom teaching, but wanted a change. Q3: What do you enjoy most about working in this type of industry? A3: I really enjoy working with all children individually, at their own pace on the skills that will help them as individuals progress. At NumberWorks’nWords, they can move on when they are ready, not when the timetable says they should! I love to see that face of joy when the penny drops and a child realises that what he or she has just learned is easy! Q4: What is the most common problem encountered in your line of work? A4: The school curriculum moves on from topic to topic at breakneck speed. Children often have no time to ‘absorb’ what they had learnt or practise new skills before ‘moving on’, whilst others want to be stretched more. As a result many children only half learn things, forgot them quickly and lose confidence. Others meanwhile want to be stretched more with harder problems and higher expectations - but there is no time for that either.

Q5: What is the usual age range/ability of your students? A5: All sorts really, from aged 5 to 16. Many have lost confidence in their ability, some find difficulty putting pen to paper and expressing their ideas, others are just too shy to ask for help and feel overlooked in class. Many of my students meanwhile want to sit for 11+, get into the top set in school or achieve a high grade at GCSE. Q6: Do you have any special offers/ promotions on at the moment? A6: Yes, I will give children a free assessment and introductory lesson. This will help me gauge a child’s skills and observe how they work. I will then discuss an individual plan of work with them and their parents/carers. Q7: Great! What is the best way for readers to get in touch with you? A7: Give me a ring on 020 8399 1234 or leave me a message on surbiton@ numberworks.com For more details look at our website www.numberworksnwords.co.uk

COMMUNITY PERSON

Community Fundraiser Eloise Martin Eloise Martin, 23, joined the Momentum team in November 2015 as a volunteer and then went on to become a Community Fundraiser for the children’s charity, based in King’s Road in Kingston. Her interest in working in the charity sector was ignited after a short work experience stint at the Cystic Fybrosis Trust while she was still at school. After graduating from York University, where she read Philosophy, she decided to pursue a career in charity. “I love my job because no two days are ever the same,” said Eloise. “One minute I could be meeting the Mayor of Kingston and the next helping a little girl to host a cake sale.” In fact assisting children with their fundraising events is the part of Eloise’s job she most enjoys. “I love seeing how enthusiastic the younger ones get with their fundraising events. Even raising small amounts of money is such a big achievement for them. It’s lovely to be a part of that.”

lives of families who are going through such unimaginably hard times.”

Eloise’s role involves assisting individual fundraisers to organise their own events by supplying fundraising materials and helping to promote them on social media, but also helping to organise community events, such as sponsored walks and street collections. And Eloise can often be spotted in the eyecatching bright green Momentum T-shirt taking part in the fundraisers herself.

Momentum supports the families of children with cancer and life-limiting conditions across SW London and Surrey with practical and emotional support through its Family Support Programme; providing respite breaks at its New Forest holiday homes, trips and treats, therapies such as music therapy and counselling, and also refurbishes areas within its 5 local partner hospitals Kingston, Epsom, St Peter’s, Croydon and East Surrey - to help enhance the healing environment.

“In the last few months I have found myself hot-footing it over 800 degree hot coals at our Firewalk event and taking part in a gym challenge to lift a million kilos in a four-hour time slot! That one was pretty exhausting I have to admit.” She added: “I love doing a job that makes a small difference in the

POLICE ADVICE

Imagine the situation

Supplied by: Alison McWinnie - MET Police

- you’ve been talking to a nice chap/lady on your preferred choice of online dating app and you’re getting on well. Things progress and you meet up for a drink in Kingston. However, you arrive and discover that the person isn’t who you thought they were and you feel uncomfortable. This is the point when you need a safe escape plan…

and Religious Hate have seen an increase but in very small numbers. Gun Crime has seen a 44% reduction but conversely knife crime has increased by 44% - again these crimes are very low in numbers.

Just go to the bar and ask any member of staff for Angela; they will know you need help and will call you a cab and/or assist you in leaving discreetly. This initiative has been rolled out to all licensed premises and also applies to those who are not on dates but are getting unwanted attention in night clubs or bars (www.met.police.uk/askforangela). Our top tip for online dating is to always meet people you’ve never met before in a public place.

Kingston has the second highest (by 0.2%) overall detection rates across the MPS at 21.4%, meaning that over 1 in 4.5 of all reported crimes are solved. The crime figures have been published for the whole of London on the MPS website www.met.Police.uk And finally … we are so proud of PC Daniel Graham for getting through to the next round on Britain’s Got Talent. Watch his audition here: https://youtu.be/b3t7DhN2AaI

Did you know that Kingston has the lowest volume of crime of any London Borough for the second year running? The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) recently released its annual crime figures. This year Kingston has seen a 4.3% (+439) rise in total reported crimes compared to the previous year, slightly lower than the 4.6% rise seen by the MPS as a whole. The rise is seen mainly from a number of volume crime contributors eg Burglary (+16%), Theft – Shoplifting (+7%) and Violence Against the Person (+6%). It is thought that these increases are due to improvements in crime recording following previous HMIC inspections on crime data integrity and are balanced against a 21% reduction in Burglary and 17% reduction in Theft the previous year. Possession of Drugs (-20%), Robbery (-2%), Going Equipped (-14%) and Domestic Abuse (-1%) have all seen a reduction. Hate Crimes such as Homophobic, Islamophobic, Racist

LOCAL CHARITY

THIS MONTH’S CHARITY Supplied by:

Horse Rangers Association On Saturdays and Sundays if you happen to be driving down the Hampton Court Road, you may see a group of horses and riders heading into Bushy Park. The horses will be immaculately turned out as hopefully are the riders all dressed in green shirts and beige jodhpurs.

Geoffrey Godbold - HRA

For these are The Horse Rangers, an amazing charity based at the Mews a few hundred yards from Hampton Court Palace. They are not a conventional riding stables, more like a cadet unit based on horses. Each weekend the 300 or so Rangers come in for four hours at a time. One weekend they ride and the next they run the stables. They are divided in Squadrons and have officers, sergeants, corporals and rangers all taking responsibility for looking after the horses and each other. The aim is to teach young people life skills and responsibility by making them commit to being ‘on parade’ and not letting their fellow Rangers down. They can join at 8 years old and progress, or there is another opportunity at 10 years old, and several stay on when they become adults to take responsibility for the younger Rangers. There are four Squadrons which come in at the weekend and one which parades on Thursday evening. The waiting list to join is about four years! When The Horse Rangers were created in 1954, one of the accepted purposes was to include all children in the activities, regardless of their financial status or indeed their physical or emotional ability. This has meant that, from the beginning, the charity has subsidised the membership fees of some Rangers and created a substantial Riding for the Disabled section. Today this runs nine sessions a week during the school term time, involving some 65 riders and 70 volunteers, and with a mix of adults and children taking part. And they also run a small Squadron on Wednesday evenings for children and young people with the added component of learning how to look after and care for horses. The charity also has an expanding outreach programme, involving days out for Young Carers – children whose spare time is taken up looking after a needy parent or sibling. They come and have a day of fun with the

9

horses and are very well looked after – a real treat for them! And in future there are firm plans for running days for other groups of disadvantaged young people, where being around horses would help them. The cost of keeping the horses and running these programmes is met by the Rangers’ monthly subscriptions but, inevitably they do not cover the total. If you would like to donate even a small amount, it would be very much appreciated. Please go to www.horserangers. com to do so.

Love Kingston, the community foundation for the Royal Borough of Kingston welcomes the announcement by Councillor Julie Pickering, the newly installed Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston, that she will be supporting Love Kingston during her mayoral year. Established in 2012, Love Kingston is a local foundation, raising funds to support groups working with communities across the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, now and in the future. Our vision is a Kingston where local people and local businesses come together to support local need. Mayor Pickering announced her support during an event on Tuesday May 16th, which saw her installed in her role as Mayor. She will be joined in her duties by her husband, James and daughter Anna. Councillor Mike Head has been appointed as Deputy Mayor. Mayor Julie Pickering, said: “Having worked closely with Kingston’s community and voluntary sector groups over the past few years, together building this fund is close to my heart. We have to ensure we support those locally that need our support and this is a Community fund to support the Community. We have set a fundraising target to be nearing £1m by 2020, as I know how much people care about Kingston and I am confident that together, as a borough, we can do this.“ Tessa Kind, Community Fundraising Manager for Love Kingston, said:

One of our Local Community Events Twenty seven years ago, Kingston Rotarian, Peter Jarvis had a good idea, one that he immediately shared with his friends and fellow Rotarians, Graham Child and John Saxton. The good idea was a simple one – to give a great day out to disabled and disadvantaged children in Kingston and he called it “Kids Out”. So, on the second Wednesday of June 1990, a cavalcade of cars decorated with ribbons and balloons set off for Thorpe Park, and those lucky children had a fantastic time. A film was made of the event and this was sent to all the Rotary Clubs in Great Britain & Ireland, so they could see what a good idea it had been. Kingston and the other local Rotary Clubs continued each year, and are still continuing, but now hundreds of other Rotary Clubs are doing the same – always on the second Wednesday in June – and last year over 29,000 children up and down the country enjoyed a great day out every year. “Kids Out” this year is on Wednesday 14th June. The Kingston Group comprised of Rotary Clubs of Kingston upon Thames, Surbiton, New Malden & Walton on Thames, will be sponsoring 509 children and more than 350 carers/teachers as many children have 1 to 1 carers; plus approx. 30 Rotarians from all four clubs will greet and join the children at Chessington World of Adventures. These children attend 11 local schools; 6 special needs schools - Dysart, Bedelsford, Clarendon, Linden Bridge, Woodlands, Manor Mead, 4 primary schools – Knollmead provision group which comprises children with severe learning difficulties, some with no language, most with autism, King Athelstan, St Joseph’s and St John’s. children to a day out in Chessington World of Adventures. We are also taking Knollmead hearing impaired children to the Magic Garden at Hampton Court and children from Kings Oak to Kidszania in London. Each child is provided with a Kids Out t-shirt and baseball cap to keep as a memento of the day. The Mayors of Kingston upon Thames and Elmbridge will also be joining us at Chessington World of Adventures.

11

KINGSTON ROTARY Supplied by: Janet Bacon - Kingston Rotary

Over the years we have received many letters of thanks from teachers and children showing that is an extremely beneficial event as can be seen from the extract below: “you have given our children so many happy experiences, personal highlight of my day was when an autistic boy ‘came alive’ in the aquarium, started to engage with me and was totally entranced by the fish – we will be building on this…” Kids Out Day could not happen without the generosity of Rotarians from all four clubs and Friends who continue to support this annual outing with donations and fund raising efforts. Nor could it happen without the support of those members who attend on Kids Out Day. If you would like to help your local community, why not think about joining our Rotary Club. LOCAL HISTORY

Father’s Day Father’s Day falls this year on Sunday 18th June, and so why not treat your Dad to a tour of Kingston’s fascinating history and then take him into one of the many local pubs or restaurants for lunch? Fathers and sons have often played a part in Kingston’s history. Last month I mentioned the Saxon King Athelstan who rid the country of the Danes and became the first “King of All England”. His father, who may also have been crowned here in Kingston, was Edward the Elder, and you can see both these Kings on the façade above the Jack Wills shop in the Ancient Market Place. Also on this façade are King John and his son King Henry III. John has long suffered an adverse reputation as the wicked prince in the days of Robin Hood and the evil and grasping king who alienated the barons, but both he and Henry III have interesting links with Kingston. King John is no doubt best known for signing the Magna Carta at Runnymede. This charter was forced upon the King by his barons, but he freely gave two charters to the town of Kingston, the first in 1200 which sadly does not survive, and a second in 1208 which does, and this gave freedom to the town to administer much of its own affairs as well as fixing rents. Henry III reinforced this in 1256 with another charter granting the town more freedoms including an eight day fair around the Feast of All Souls on 1 November.

Supplied by: Mike Seigel - Kingston Tour Guides

Henry was only nine when his father John died, and some barons had favoured handing the throne to Louis, the eldest son of the French King, and had invited him to invade. Yet after John’s death they changed their minds and supported the coronation of the young Henry. They took Louis to the safety and seclusion of Ravens Ait where he agreed to the Treaty of Kingston, conferring the throne of England to Henry. Another famous father and son in more recent times are Frank and Leonard Bentall. Frank was another of our Kingston characters who featured in our Mystery Walk in April, and, when he retired in 1909 from the hugely successful business he had started, Leonard became general manager and it was under his management that saw the conversion of Bentalls into a private limited company in 1925. If you are interested in learning more about the fascinating history of our town, why not join one of our tours, led by specially trained volunteers? We meet at 11am every Sunday in the summer months outside the church gates in the Ancient Market Place. The charge is £5 per adult – or, if Sunday mornings do not suit you, you can arrange a special tour for you and your friends at another time to suit you. For further information please visit our website www. kingstontourguides.org.uk and do leave us a message!

ARTS

KAOS

Supplied by: Caroline Calascione - KAOS

Once again, June brings the Kingston Artists Open Studios (KAOS) event to the community. Over the weekends of 10th-11th and 17th-18th June 2017, local artists, designers and makers will be opening their studios and homes to the public. The open studios event in Kingston has gone from strength to strength over the past seven years since it began. This year there are 100 artists and makers showing a range of 3D and 2D work in 19 different venues across Kingston. Painting, drawing, ceramics, photography, printmaking, textile art, illustration, fashion design, jewellery design and many more artistic disciplines are all represented at this exciting and intriguing event. This is a perfect opportunity for you to meet local artists, see their work and discover the techniques they use and the passions that inspire them. A trail map, with information of who does what and where, is widely distributed in cafés and public venues around the local area. It is also available for download from the KAOS website www. kingstonartistsopenstudios.co.uk. Open Studios is a nationwide scheme, created to support the work of artists within the local community. The aim is to promote accessibility to art and artists. Visits are free of charge and artists are happy to talk about their creative process. Works of art are for sale but there is no obligation to buy, the focus is on enjoying your visit.

KAOS will be hosting an exhibition called “It’s raining… cats and dogs” to raise funds for the local childrens’ charity Momentum. It will take place on Saturday 3rd June between All Saints Church and John Lewis, selling postcards created by Kingston artists and school children.

For a taster of what is to come, take a look here at the stitched portraits of local people by artist Ruth Blackford. She will be showing in Studio 3, Kings Road KT2. The winners of Young KAOS (for local 16-19 year-olds) were Nereece Nicklin, Uggi Adalsteins and Lucia Lenaghan. They will be showing their work alongside professional artists during open studios. This year, in addition to open studios, 15

GARDENING

Weeds and Other Foes or Friends

Supplied by: Janet Bacon

Just as your plants are growing well, along come slugs and snails to spoil new growth on herbaceous plants such as Hosta or Delphiniums. Weeds are also growing at an alarming rate but how to remove weeds or slugs and snails is a matter of choice and can be done in two ways either manually or with chemicals. Manually weeding can be done by using a draw hoe over a bed or between rows to kill most weed seedlings or you can pull annual weeds by hand before they set seed. Perennial weeds should be dug out with as much root (or bulb) as possible, using a hand or border fork. Preventative measures such as deep organic mulches e.g. bark or wood chip to smother weeds around plants or weed-suppressant fabrics can be laid over recently cleared soil to suppress re-growth of old weeds and prevent new weeds from establishing. There are a lot of chemical products available from garden centres which you can spray onto weeds which either kill off top growth or go down into the roots. Choose a still day as you do not want the wind to drift the spray onto other nearby plants. Manual removal of slugs and snails is best carried out at night when slugs and snails are out or after it has rained. Collect up as many as possible and remember do not throw snails over next door’s garden as they have a very good homing instinct.

in the form of a microscopic nematode or eelworm that is watered into the soil. The nematodes (Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita) enter slugs’ bodies and infect them with bacteria that cause a fatal disease. The most environmentally friendly way to deal with slugs and snails is to rake over the soil and remove fallen leaves so birds can eat the exposed slug eggs. Chemical control of slugs and snails is achieved by scattering slug pellets thinly around vulnerable plants, such as seedlings, vegetables and young shoots on herbaceous plants. It is important to store pellets safely and scatter them thinly as they can harm other wildlife, pets and young children if eaten in quantity. So make friends with birds, frogs, toads, hedgehogs, slow-worms and ground beetles because they eat slugs and snails and these predators should be encouraged in gardens.

You can also place traps, such as scooped out half orange, grapefruit or melon skins, laid cut side down, or jars part-filled with beer and sunk into To get in touch, please email j.bacon@ the soil near vulnerable plants. HEALTH & BEAUTY

Tips for the Spring

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

This time of year, there are weddings to go to/BBQs/days out and more opportunities to change things up in order to find your best day-makeup for sunny (yet unpredictable) weather. It’s also a time to pass some tips on to your Dad - as Father’s Day is around the corner... and we all love a bit of pampering from time to time! Take care of your skin first Before any long day out, especially when started off with a full face of makeup, it is always a good idea to moisturise your skin, especially while you’re young. Make sure you cleanse and exfoliate your face - then apply your favourite moisturisers and primer products, allowing it to dry in before you start your makeup routines. Regular moisturising also applies when men (or women) shave - it always helps the skin and avoids irritation when followed by a good moisturiser/body butter or a shave balm (something to add to the Father’s Day gift bag?). Knowing your shades There is no set out list of what colours you should or shouldn’t wear - this should be up to you, your style and whatever you’re planning to wear. However, a good rule of thumb for this time of year is to aim somewhat light and natural, especially if you’re looking for good work-day makeup or something light that won’t lead to extreme panda eyes and dark circles if it rains/you get a little sweaty. For lips, opt for nude shades, going no more than 2 shades darker than your regular lip hue. Try to avoid anything too shiny and shimmery - matte finishes can look a lot more sophisticated and usually stay on longer. For eyes, opt for subtle beige, peach

18

or light brown shadows and try not to lay the eyeliner on too thick. For a more believable natural look you can opt for a brown or even clear mascara to get your eyes to pop without the dark sticky buildup that starts to irritate by the end of the day. Hairstyles The great thing with this time of year is that you won’t need the hairdryer as often (unless it’s a preference). Take care of your hair where you can for when those days at the beach that cause damage, or for when you find yourself washing a lot more regularly due to feeling hot and sweaty. For less washing and quick freshen-ups, opt for a gentle dry shampoo or run a little talcum powder through roots. Why not add volume by adding mousse or braiding your hair before you sleep for natural waves? This could be your chance to switch up that sleek, straightened look and go for more of a surfer or boho look to suit your summer fashions. Don’t think the men in your life don’t appreciate their hair products either - why not get include gels/wax/thickness boosters in your Father’s Day swag? It doesn’t hurt to try things out!

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Microbiome: The buzzword of the moment, but what exactly is it?

Supplied by: Claire Dyson - Untangle Your Life

A biome is “a large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat such as a forest or tundra.” We offer a habitat for microorganisms e.g. bacteria, virus and fungus, which form our microbiome. Whilst microbes that cause athlete’s foot, body odour or bad breath are annoying, most “pay their rent”. “Most of the microbes in the microbiome do not cause disease. In fact, humans rely on microbes to perform many important functions that we cannot perform ourselves. Microbes digest food to generate nutrients for host cells, synthesize vitamins, metabolize drugs, detoxify carcinogens, stimulate renewal of cells in the gut lining and activate and support the immune system” (National Human Genome Research Institute website). Tending your gut microbiome well reduces IBS, obesity (so high blood pressure, heart disease), type 2 diabetes, and allergies (asthma, eczema). Dr Gewirtz (Cornell University) changed the weight of mice by over 15% just by shifting their intestinal bacteria and we humans have the same link. Adjusting your diet can shift the balance in favour of gut bacteria which keep us lean (Bacteroidetes) and away from those which busy themselves with increasing our stores of fat (Firmicutes). Stress hormones kill Bacteroidetes, which is another reason why we put on weight when stressed.

two weeks before moving onto more normal serving sizes. This avoids gas and bloating caused by other microbes getting in on the act before your Bacteroidetes multiply. Sleep and eat according to regular schedules. Like our sleep-wake cycle, the rhythm of gut bacteria changes throughout the day. Shift work, jet lag and erratic meal times can hurt good bacteria (as can overuse of antibiotics). The old idea of health was that it was the result of strenuous effort and deprivation. Not only was that not fun, it did not work. The new revolution is that being healthy, lean and energized is a product of being at peace and in sync with the world inside and around you. www.untangleyourlife.co.uk

Dr Michael Mosely has published “The Clever Guts Guide” and Dr Alan Christianson advises: Eat a high-fibre diet e.g. wholegrains, porridge, beans (especially kidney or pinto), nuts etc. Stop Firmicutes running riot by avoiding added sugars and processed carbs (white bread, pasta, cake). Encourage Bacteroidetes gradually by introducing a tablespoon of pinto or red kidney beans to supper each evening for

The LP Partnership – Finding Inspiration for Change!

SYNERGY SECTION Supplied by: Lorraine Tarbitten - Synergy

What is the trigger that inspires our growth within our Mind, Body, and Spirit? Could it be the words of our doctor passing advice or tests results or our bodies having less flexibility; is it the look in the dressing room mirror of our favourite shop or our mind filled with un-necessary thoughts, jumbled together, drifting from past events and concerns for our future ones. Are we able to live in the present moment and be in the now? Do we really understand how to be in the now? Remaining still in this moment and not being bombarded with thoughts of should, could or would? Having a quiet mind and allowing our future events to unfold? Being in the now gives a sense of calm and peace that allows you to know that everything is right with the world and that you are exactly where you are meant to be. How often do we quieten our minds to allow that spiritual connection? How many times have you asked your spiritual guides to help you with a decision or guide you on your path in the most harmonious way? Remember the saying ‘ask and it is given’ even if you cannot hear the words you will be guided. If you could resolve the issues of the past and allow the hurt, pain, sadness and whatever else you carry to disappear - would you? There are many ways to heal the mind, body and spirit and taking the first steps by allowing a healing session is a wonderful connection to yourself and an uncovering of past traumas without re-living them!

21

Do you feel our emotional issues may cause physical symptoms? I remember my mum saying that she kept all her grief for her own mother in her chest and she subsequently died of breast cancer. None of us will know the truth but why carry emotional issues if they can be resolved. Everything can be forgiven when working with the highest energy, while remembering that for everything that happens there is a reason, even if it’s hard to believe. There is a pathway that you can take, the first step for all Mind, Body, and Spirit concerns, but connecting and having a oneto-one healing session with Lorraine will be a wonderful experience of clearing out the old and finding resolution without reliving the traumas or stories. By connecting with your guides during the session, you will leave with so many more tools, having experienced many enlightening moments and having let go of your past issues leaving you free to and able to live in a more peaceful way. Father’s Day DIY

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

With Father’s Day this Month, it Might be an Idea to Treat the Fix-it Guy of the house (if he’s the type of course!) with some great gifts and favours that celebrate his special day. You or your kids could make physical efforts like taking control of chores and helping to build/craft things by his side, or simply aid him by gifting him with what he needs. For example: Document projects If he has decided to take on a new DIY project or endeavour, why not let him know you’re on board by taking photographs and notes that show his progress. Make a Facebook photo album or even a slideshow of his accomplishments in order to revel in his success! Stock him up on supplies In order to help him with his hobbies or those odd jobs you and the family have asked him for, make things easier on him and get him psyched up to do them by stocking up. This could mean buying a new tool box or set of hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers and so on - or look into less obvious, yet practical solutions like knee pads for protection during those kneeling tasks.

Musical gifts You could put some time in before the big day to create a mix CD or simply a playlist on whatever gadgets are available for your next family drive - include all his favourites. Show him that you listened to all his stories about the best gigs he’s ever been to, his favourite guitar solos or include songs that remind you of him.

Food-based DIY Why stop with tools and to-dos? Whip up his favourite meal, maybe even get the kids involved as long as it’s safe. You could either surprise him with all his favourite side dishes and a special dessert, or even pack up a picnic of all his favourites and take it to the par with the little ones, spend some time as a family. Nothing says “Happy Father’s Dayâ€? more than that. Recycling and repairing Not in a completely literal sense‌ but using something around the house that he thinks is useless in a way that makes it special is a nice idea. For instance, fix a broken frame by gluing the wood back together or using a laminator/plastic sheet to replace what glass used to be inside it. After you’ve done this, let the kids paint it and make it look brand new, or polish it up yourself, and then insert his favourite family photo. Stitch up torn clothing for him or glue the handle on his favourite mug so it’s usable again. If you’re concerned about the safety of the put-backtogether ceramics, reuse them as something else, like a pencil holder - no need to worry about liquid spillage!

Repossession? There is another way…

Bit grim, the news lately. House prices are starting to drop after several years of increases. Wages are not going up, but the cost of living is. THE 6 CREATIVE

Money Music Talks

Supplied by: Louis Spackman The 6 Creative

Money Music Talks is a weekly course aimed at artists, producers, writers and instrumentalists who have the desire to transform their craft into a money making machine. From the founders at The 6 Global, our 2017 manifesto is to help a million people by 2020 and artists are a large part of that vision. Originally The 6 Global was an A&R consultancy company in partnership with Warner, Universal Music, and various indie labels, delivering artist development and label services.

A deep look into how technology has impacted the music business and how much of that has worked in the artist’s favour. We will look into how to take your brand to a global market. Month 6: SUSTAINABILITY.

We believe that this course is the first step to your financial independence as an artist and creative. With a workshop every Saturday morning and afternoon our ‘Money Music Talks’ course is the best thing on the market, covering a range of topics focusing on cash flow and business for the artist. Course Breakdown Month 1: INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS AND TRADE. Shedding light on the dynamics of buying and selling in the music industry. We must identify what we are selling, how we sell it and to whom we are selling to. Month 2: MOVING FROM HOBBY TO MONEY. We figure out the system and how to reverse engineer our minds to look at art as a viable asset and intellectual property. Month 3: SPOTTING MARKET TRENDS. How to make the tides own in your favour by being in the right place at the right time. Essentially placing the artist around success to attract it. Month 4: THE RE-CON EFFECT. We must learn to research and develop our business through government funded programs designed for the creative industry. There is tons of funding available for the arts. How do I tap into that resource? Month 5: GLOBALISATION.

37

how do we take our success and make it work for us? How do we take our business to the next level by expanding our team? How to choose your accountant/lawyers/PR/ manager etc ADDITIONAL SUPPORT Artists will have full access to learning tools and resources to push their career to another level. Get full-time constant help with legal documents to conduct your business. Invoices available for your clients on demand, Interns on standby to help with social media management and promotion. Gigging and tour support for artists who are ready to go on the road. Free studio time for gold and platinum members on the course. COMPETITION REVIEW

Hawkers Bar & Brasserie We visited Kingston’s new Hawkers Bar and Brasserie this month for you – situated in The Double Tree – Hilton, a stone’s throw from Kingston Bridge. The Art Deco chic style bar and restaurant set the scene, with copper, grey and tea shades in a 1920’s theme and a unique and warm evening lighting arrangement, paying homage to the local hero Harry Hawker, whose aviation company designed the Hawker Hurricane plane in Kingston. Starting with The Aviator cocktail, Kingston’s own Beckett’s gin distilled with mint from Neil’s backyard and Juniper from Box Hill, Crème de Violette, Maraschino liqueur & sugar set the evening up the way it was to continue, delicious! There were numerous other cocktails, artisan beers and drinks to choose from including the award winning Sake, infused Jinzu Gin, Smoking Goldfish, Leroy to name a few. Succulent pan fried scallops, air dried chorizo, pea puree and Pan fried wild mushrooms – Chanterellet, Enoki & Oyster toasted crispy brioche and garlic were perfect starters. Hawkers puff pie was succulent after 18 hours slow cooking, perfectly suited to the smoked bacon and cabbage parcel and rosemary gravy which accompanied it. The rib of beef was manly with smoked garlic mash and Tempranillo red wine sauce, accompanied by very fresh tender broccoli. The waiter selected a perfect Bordeaux red to accompany the meal.

40

Blackberry cheesecake with the most sharp, refreshing tasty sorbet is highly recommended, or Coffee crème brulee twist, served in a coffee cup with handcrafted baileys ice cream. This venue is perfect for anytime of day, whether it is afternoon tea, lunchtime break, business meetings, after work or shopping chill out or a lovely evening out. Parking all around in numerous car parks and just across the road from Bentalls/John Lewis. Thank you to Merlin and his team for such a lovely evening out, well worth the visit. We will definitely be back for the botanical afternoon tea menu during the Hampton Court Flower Show 4-9th July. CONGRATULATIONS TO LAST MONTH’S WINNER DAWN BELTON, WE HOPE YOU ENJOYED YOUR FREE YOGA SESSIONS, COURTESY OF SYNCHOLISTIC YOGA!
