LOCAL BUSINESS
This Month’s Local Business Focus: Tolworth Fencing Company
Supplied by: Donna Costello - Tolworth Fencing
This Month we want to share some of the history behind one of our latest Omni Local supporters, Tolworth Fencing Company. In 1946 Tate & Lyle (the sugar company) went to Ireland to employ 350 men to work for their company, including Patrick Costello and his 4 cousins. Their intention was to work in England for 18 months and then emigrate to Australia, however Patrick married a woman named Eileen and settled down locally. In 1951, Patrick sought a career change, and was employed by Grove Fencing in Esher, until 1958, when he made the decision to set up a business with a gentleman called Les Mould. Together they formed “Fencing & Walls”.
passed away in 1993 at the age of 68. Joe continued to take the business forward and was approached to work for companies such as Carla, Persimmons, Byrnes Brothers & Devine Homes. Sadly again, Joe suffered the loss of his Mother Eileen in 2002, aged 73. His wife Diane then became a director of the company and Joe soon decided to seek premises to have a retail yard. Unfortunately there was no premises available, so they relocated to Morden.
The company ran for 2 years, until they decided to go their separate ways. Les started “Dale Fencing” in Cheam and Patrick: “Tolworth Fencing”, with his wife Eileen running the office. His son Joe would often help during weekends and school holidays, however, he chose not to follow in his father’s footsteps when he left school, training as a mechanic for FWD Motors. He then worked as a butcher for 2 years, before moving into construction. In 1971, he married Diane Church.
Here he sells fencing to both trade and domestic customers, together with his daughter Donna, who joined the team in recent years, although even at the age of 65 he still likes to work on site.
Unfortunately, Patrick broke his ankle a month later, so in order to keep the business going, Joe made the decision to go into partnership with his father. The business went from strength to strength. They were approached by some of the main house builders of that time, including John Laings, Higgs and Hills & Algreys Developments, to move into more commercial work.
The retail yard supplies quality fencing materials, decking & sleepers. Their most popular items are their own handmade products, such as closeboard panels, trellis’ and gates. They have a strong clientele, thanks to good old-fashioned customer service. It is nice to know that even after 55 years and with three generations of the Costello family, Tolworth Fencing is still here today.
After deciding to go commercial they achieved great success as the main fencing contractor for some of the largest housing developments in the south east. Sadly, Patrick

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY
Show Some Love this Month Why not involve yourself in some of this month’s causes and awareness weeks? Below are some of this month’s special events.
THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local CHARITY
National Share-A-Story Month This month marks National Share-A-Story Month, which is an annual celebration of storytelling and story sharing. The theme for this year is “A Place for Stories” which encourages telling stories in unusual and unorthodox (although safe) places. This could mean anything from under a tree to on a boat, or even on the bus. With reports and photos being posted to fcbg.org.uk, you’ll find tons of ideas on joining in the fun and how to help the local community further appreciate the joy of reading! National Doughnut Week (7th - 14th May) Here’s one everyone’s going to want to get involved in! Bakers, cafes and companies are raising money for The Children’s Trust by selling delicious doughnuts and sharing the proceeds. What better reason do you need to treat that sweet tooth this month? Companies can sign up to get involved at nationaldoughnutweek.org. When registered, they will receive a NDW pack, full of sales material and displays for customers to let them know when their week is taking place. Make May Purple This month is the Stroke Association’s annual awareness month. The #MakeMayPurple initiative was created to allow friends, families and communities to show support to their loved ones who have been affected by strokes, and to raise awareness and funds for the charity. You can get involved with their cause by baking, hair dyeing or signing up to special events. The idea is to have fun, spread the word and raise vital funds. By visiting stroke.org.uk, you can find out more information and sign up for an action pack to get you started. National Walking Month It is also National Walking Month, which helps to promote the benefits of walking more. Whatever your level of fitness, walking is an easy and no-cost way to feel healthier and happier. Keeping active is important at
6
any age, and can be very enjoyable with the right company, or some good music in your headphones. Why not schedule more long walks into your weekly routine? You’ll feel great and you may even notice some weight loss along the way. Even small changes like switching out part of your work journey from bussing to walking, getting off a stop earlier than you need makes a difference. Alternatively, if you need more motivation and have a little extra love to give, why not get a dog to become your daily walking companion? Do something good this month; whether it’s for yourself, your friends, your family, or the whole community!

If the unthinkable happens and your child is diagnosed with cancer, knowing that there is support from a local charity who really understand what you’re going through, is invaluable. In February, Momentum children’s charity’s Family Services Adviser Rebecca Gilligan became a Kingston Hospital ‘Momentum Friend’, which means that Rebecca now dedicates one day a week to supporting children and their families on the Paediatric Unit at the hospital. Mother-of-three, Rebecca knows firsthand the huge impact that a child’s cancer diagnosis can have on the family, after her daughter Eva, now four, was diagnosed with Wilms Tumour in November 2013.
beautiful new beach hut.
With support from Kingston-based Momentum throughout Eva’s battle with cancer, Rebecca said she felt very strongly that she wanted to give something back to the charity that supported them through their darkest days. Rebecca, whose daughter has now finished treatment, said: “My role as a Family Services Adviser is to visit children and their families in hospital or at home, offering emotional support but also letting them know about the services we offer, such as respite breaks and counselling.” “Some parents just need to talk to somebody who understands what they are going through. Others need practical help with filling in forms. Everyone’s needs are different. The important thing is to provide each family with the individual support that they need.”
Rebecca said: “Having things to look forward to is so important. I always talk to the families about getting away to one of the holiday homes for a few days. We also offer music and dance classes which are great therapy for the children. It’s such a wonderful way for them to express their emotions.” On Tuesdays when Rebecca can be easily spotted in her bright green Momentum hoodie ‘doing the rounds’ on Kingston Hospital’s Paediatric Unit, she never knows how her day will unfold. She said: “I love being present at the hospital. Each week is different. One minute I’ll be chatting to a family on daycare and another I’ll be fetching coffee or lunch for a parent who can’t leave their child. All support is vital for a parent caring for a sick child.”
Through its Family Support Programme, Momentum will support up to 150 families across SW London and Surrey. In addition to practical and emotional support for their daily lives Momentum encourages families to take a break at one of its two New Forest holiday homes, with the use of its

POLICE ADVICE
This Month’s Advice As we go to copy deadline, our thoughts are with those affected by the terrible terror attacks in Brussels. The Kingston Police Borough Commander took immediate action to protect Kingston and ordered an increase in policing presence within key areas of the Borough, to protect the public and provide reassurance. Whilst there is no specific intelligence or information relating to Kingston, we urge everyone to remain alert and if you see anything suspicious to call the anti-terror hotline on 0800 789 321, or in an emergency 999. From the community perspective what are the key things to look out for in respect of radicalisation in progress? Radicalisation can be unique to the subject. However there are behaviours that can suggest possible issues around radicalisation although these are not unique to radicalisation and can indicate other situations of crisis. Examples of these are broken into three groups: Emotional Withdrawn, low self-esteem, angry, depression, domestic issues Verbal Terms/suggestions that breach ‘freedom of speech’, conspiracy theories, inappropriate questions, focus on limited/certain terminology Physical (not necessarily clothing) Tattoos, internet/gaming/ media/social media, dress, writing Can concerns be reported to police in confidence? (fear of reprisals) Yes - The details of the person reporting signs of radicalisation and/or extremism are never disclosed to the subject. Background checks and research are undertaken by the Police to weed out any malicious reporting. Plus the Anti-terrorist Hotline allows anonymous reporting. National Counter Terrorism Policing has launched a short film which sets out practical steps that can be taken to stay safe in the rare event of a firearms or weapons attack. The film can be watched on YouTube: https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jxOXbpTmnk 14th May – Magistrates Talk Ever wondered what happens in a Magistrates Court? LOCAL CHARITY
THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: Kay Bascombe - LEAH CHARITY
LEAH (Learn English at Home) LEAH works with ethnic minority adults, including refugees and migrants, who are socially isolated due to their lack of English language. LEAH has been in existence for over 30 years. We are a small, local charity but we make a huge impact! Our volunteers are, quite simply, our lifeline - we always need more volunteers/supporters and we are also keen to promote our work to anyone with low level English, who is isolated, unable to go to college and who may meet the criteria for our help and support. Poor English can hinder integration, finding work and accessing the most basic of services such as housing, education for children and health care. Isolation sometimes combined with past trauma, means that many of our clients suffer from poor mental health and low self-confidence. Often, they lack social or family support networks, have little opportunity to practice English with native English speakers and lack the ability to make these connections. Lack of economic activity due to their lows levels of English, or their child-care responsibilities, can mean that they are further marginalised. We provide the following services, all at no cost to clients who meet the criteria for our service:
community settings, with creche facilities • Group walks & craft activities with embedded ESOL • Trips and social activities in local areas e.g. heritage tours of Kingston, trips to Kew Gardens We currently work with over 100 volunteer tutors, all of whom have been through LEAH’s comprehensive volunteer training course, including safeguarding and DBS checks, thanks to one of our major funders, The Big Lottery Fund. We also offer ongoing volunteer development courses on topics such as supporting clients with mental health needs and child poverty awareness. Our services offer clients a means to overcome isolation and improve their chances in life through improved English language skills, increased confidence and self-belief, and greater knowledge of local services. It empowers clients to become active members of their local communities and, in doing so we contribute to building stronger communities. We also always need financial donations or fundraising support to continue our lifechanging work. Can you help us in some way – either by donating your time or support? Or do you know someone who could benefit from our services? If so please get in touch.
• One to one (1:1) English as a second language (ESOL) tuition in the client’s home • Group ESOL skills classes in

LOCAL HISTORY
May Merrie
Supplied by: Mike Seigel - Kingston Tour Guides
As we move into May and celebrate May Merrie, we look back at Kingston’s Saxon past. Children are often dressed up for the crowning of the kings, which took place in our own town. We know that at least two Saxon kings were crowned here, and it is possible that as many as seven were. Have you ever thought why the car park opposite Sainsbury’s is called ‘Seven Kings’ and why there is ‘Saxon Road’ beside it? Have you looked at the mural of the Saxon kings outside BHS in Eden Street or gone to see the Coronation Stone by the Guildhall? How much do you know of Kingston’s exciting history which goes back to Saxon times? Most people learn about the famous Saxon king, Alfred the Great, renowned for his efforts against the invading Danes – and for his burning of the cakes! Alfred was king of Wessex, one of the Saxon kingdoms, and it was Alfred’s son, Edward the Elder, who is thought to have been the first king crowned here in Kingston around 902. The tradition, going back at least to Victorian times, suggests that all of Edward the Elder’s six successors (beautifully depicted on the mural outside BHS which was put up in 1985) were crowned here in Kingston, and it was the Victorians who moved the Coronation Stone to its current site in 1850 amid great pomp and ceremony. There is historical evidence to support two of the seven being crowned here, Athelstan and Ethelred the Unready, and as for the others we can only surmise! Athelstan has been called “The First King of England” as he successfully united the Saxon kingdoms, and you can see a replica of his crown inside the church. The last of these Saxon Kings was less fortunate: Ethelred was called “Unready” but this is a mistranslation of the Saxon word which in fact means “ill-advised”. The king was not well advised, and ended up losing his throne to the Danes! Snippets of Kingston’s history appear most

HOME
Keep Moths at Bay The weather’s certainly looking up this time of year! However, there is one downside - the bugs are coming back! A common problem this time of year is moths in your pantry/ dry foods. Read on and find out how to avoid unwanted guests in your kitchen.
Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
Invest in some help There are many preventative measures you can take for affordable prices, so do some research and stock up on what you need, such as bug-catching stickers that you can mount on the walls of your cupboard, moth repellent, zip-lock bags and tupperware containers.
Get your cloths and sponges out Once the cupboards are empty, simply use a spray kitchen cleaner (as long as it is suitable) or a bowl of soapy water and a sponge, and wipe down the shelves. You may notice lots of sticky patches from things like open jars of honey or sugar/flour spills, so a scourer could be useful as well.
Moths are repelled by lavender and cedar, so rather than purchasing funny-smelling mothballs for your food storage, you could fashion your own repellent. All you need are mesh bags/netting, and cedar chips/ wooden balls, or lavender oil if you like the smell. Create small, sweet-smelling parcels or bags and keep them in the corner of each cupboard, or in drawers/closets.
Once you’ve washed them down, allow the cupboards to dry out thoroughly or wipe away any moisture using a towel or kitchen roll. Once the shelves are dry you can start on the reorganising and moth-proofing.
Reorganise!
Put everything back together!
The best solution and first step to your clean up/prevention is to set aside a few hours to go through all your dry food cupboards and remove any useless, expired or bug-infested foods as soon as possible. Moths are known for getting into open bags of flour or pulses - even if you are quite careful, so make sure you check any open packaging or throw out whatever you’re unsure about.
Wipe off any dusty cans or jars first, and start restocking your cupboard. Just be sure to set up any preventative measures, such as stickers, before you do so. If you have any boxes of cereal, be sure to either tape the inner bag shut, or transfer all contents into an airtight container.
Store opened items you do want to keep in airtight containers and set aside with all the tins, jars and packets you want to return the cupboard when you’re done. You’ll be amazed at the space you’re left with.
14
Start with larger items like tall containers filled with oats, flour, pasta and cereals, keeping the bigger items at the back, or you’ll forget what’s in there and find more wastage next time you have a clean out! Keep everything sealed and clean and you should have moth-free cupboards this year.

LEARNING
How’s your child’s spelling?
Supplied by: Celia Osbourne NumberWorks’n’Words
It’s just not fair, says Celia form NumberWorks’nWords, for some children (and adults), spelling is easy …. they just look at a word and can remember how to write it. For other equally clever people, it’s a minefield. It all depends on how you as an individual think and learn. If you learn visually, it tends to be easy, but maybe you’re an auditory learner and need to be able to hear the spellings. Here are some techniques that we use again and again at NumberWorks’nWords. Emphasise syllables When you learn the spelling emphasis each syllable - maybe even clap on each part of the word. As you say the word aloud make sure that you emphasise any vowel sounds that aren’t obvious, Diff – er – ent, Norm – al, Im – por – tant, In – de – pen – dent Say it in a funny way to help you remember it?
by sight alone.
pee – op – plee (people), lis – ten (listen), Was and Wanted (emphasising the a), speck – i - al (special) Invent a sentence with another word that is spelt in the same way? I always believe my friend and wouldn’t lie to them, You hear with your ear. Our favourite colour Make a phrase to help you remember the hard bit?
But remember…… just because your child learned to spell a word yesterday or last week, doesn’t mean that they can spell it correctly today!! Practise the word again (and again) with the trick – (making sure they write it as well) so it is secure every time. At NumberWorks’nWords we also help children with their reading and writing, not to mention maths. From Reception to GCSE, if you feel your child needs a bit of extra help in a fun environment, give us a call. We will assess your child and discuss how we can help, plus give them a trial lesson.
You guess (U guess),You have a biscuit (U), Big elephants are ugly (beautiful) The committee was full. (lots of double letters) You can have real fun making up silly ideas for how words are spelt. It does sometimes seem that you need to learn lots of words individually and in a different way, but at NumberWorks’nWords we find many students can remember spellings better if they ‘story’ them rather than just by remembering them

Replacing a Shower head
Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
What could be bad about a nice refreshing shower in the morning or after a workout? Nothing! - unless you have a faulty shower head. If you’re in need of a new one, here is how to install it yourself: What you may need: Shower head, teflon tape, pliers, adjustable wrench, towels, cloths, toothbrush 1. Turn the water supply off first - Make sure that all knobs are in the OFF position, then locate and shut off the valve connected to the shower. The valve should be oval-shaped and silver. This may be located under the sink, or in some cases it will have been installed inside the wall, which means you may need to shut off the whole water supply to your home, using the valve you’ll find in your utility room or cellar. 2. Lay down some towels or sheets - Put a towel on the shower floor or lay a towel across the bottom of the bath tub, to catch any loose pieces before they find their way down the plughole, and to protect the floor from any damages in the case of dropping tools. 3. Remove the shower head - Some shower heads are simple to unscrew, using just your hands. However, you can also remove the head using simple tools, if it has been fastened more securely. Wrap a cloth around the base of the shower head, then use a pair of pliers to grip the covered area securely. With an adjustable wrench, you can then clamp the base and twist off the shower head in an anti-clockwise motion until the shower head is removed. 4. Clean and replace the tape - Clean the neck of the shower using a damp cloth, or even a toothbrush for smaller, inner crevices. Make sure to wipe down the screw
16
threads, removing any rust grime, or teflon remnants. Secure the threads with about 3 turns of teflon tape. Pull tightly as you wrap in a clockwise motion. Press the edges of the tape into each thread groove. 5. Fit your new shower head - Fit the shower head by twisting clockwise until secure. Once done, use the cloths, pliers and wrench to fasten tightly, as explained in step 3. Most shower heads should attach in the exact same way, whether you have a mounted or hand held shower, although hand-helds have an attached diverter below the head, and may require looking at the directions included. Once fitted, turn the water supply back on and run the water to check for leaks. If it does leak, you can reapply teflon tape to patch it up.

The Cooking Corner Smoked salmon & Mozzarella frittata Serves 2 This frittata is a delicious and healthy option for any time of day. Spoil a loved one by presenting as breakfast in bed, or serve as a light and satisfying lunch or dinner during the warmer months either way, you can’t go wrong! Ingredients: • 120g smoked salmon, cut into very small pieces (or you can use a packet of “trimmings”) • 4 large free range (organic) eggs • 6-8 Mozzarella pearls, drained (or one Mozzarella cut into cubes) • 2 tsp of dried dill (or chopped fresh dill if you have it) • Splash of soya milk • Freshly ground black pepper and Himalayan salt if desired • 1 tbsp of olive oil
6. Cook over a medium heat for about 3-4 minutes. As the eggs set, lift the frittata with a spatula and tilt the pan to allow the uncooked egg to run underneath. 7. When the eggs are set, place the frying pan under the grill, 10cm (4ins) from the heat for another 3-4 minutes until the top is golden brown and firm when pressed and the Mozzarella has melted. 8. Serve at once, cut in half, on a warmed plate.

Toning up for the Beach
Supplied by: Andrew Sillett - On Sight Media
Cosmopolitan: “A Great Beach Body in 3 Days: You don’t need to bust ass for months to look like a goddess in a bikini.” Vogue: “How to Get a Beach Body in Two Weeks” Bodybuilding.com: “Getting Beach Body Ready - Summer’s Just Around the Corner!” Around this time of year, we are all sold the delusion that some kind of tropical heatwave is imminent and we’re all going to be parading around in swimwear under the critical gaze of an army of body fascists. But you don’t have to be a preening narcissist to find the prospect of exposing your puny arms and flaccid stomach to public gaze equally unappealing, after months of concealment under layers of winter clothing. We all want to feel and look good when wearing less clothing in the summer. The bad news is that if you want a great beach body, it’s going to take longer than three days or two weeks (unless you already look like the people in Vogue.) You may as well face it: you are going to have to bust ass. Just losing a bit of weight won’t cut it. If you want a toned body, you’re going to have to tone. This involves a raft of horrors like The Plank, lunges, punches, press ups, tricep dips, squat jumps, squats, crunches and weightlifting. All deeply repellent to any reasonably thinking person.
specific needs and goals. This might take account of an existing condition or focus on an area of your body you particularly want to tone up. “Hardly anyone finds it easy to stay motived to get fit by themselves,” says Leon Almashan, head of PhysioExtra. “We mix up the exercises to keep things interesting. After six weeks you will really see a difference. Most people are surprised by what they achieve. This gives them the confidence and motivation to carry on working out at a gym or training with a friend once they finish their course with us.” PhysioExtra combines personal training with physiotherapy, so they can also iron out any niggles that are preventing you from getting fit, as well as ensuring you stay injury free while training.
The solution, you won’t be surprised to hear if you’ve been reading this series, is to get in touch with PhysioExtra in Ham.
And as exercise boosts endorphin levels, helps you sleep better and burns more calories even after you finish working out by raising your metabolism and increasing muscle mass, you might end up feeling good… regardless of the admiring glances of strangers on a beach.
Their personal trainers will devise a programme of exercise that suits your

GARDENING
Planting in May Fill in those long weekends with some productivity. Here’s what you could be planting this time of year: Cruciferous Vegetables This includes all members of your family Brassicaceae - Cauliflowers, brussels sprouts, broccoli and leafy cabbages. You definitely want to get to work on your brussels this month if you want them to be ready in December. Cauliflowers and cabbages may also be cutting it fine, except for the early Spring varieties. You can sow indoors, using a seedbed and then transfer into a larger space later in the year. Broccoli and calabrese can be planted as late as July. Squash and Winter Vegetables For example, pumpkins, courgettes, butternut squash and so on. Now is a perfectly food time to sow your squashes indoors, allowing them to germinate, ready for planting seedlings in June. Leafy Vegetables Such as spinach, kale, chard, or more oriental leaves like chinese cabbages, mizuna, mibuna and pak choi. Now is a good time to get your greens growing and leafy vegetables like these are packed full of vitamins for the cold season. These can be sown outdoors this time of year, but you will have to make sure you cover them on colder nights. Sweetcorn Grow your own corn cobs this time of year. Sow any sweetcorn outside in blocks, as opposed to rows, as this encourages more successful pollination. Just be sure to protect the seedlings from slugs or snail attacks and frosting over, using upside down plastic bottles or cloches. Peppers Chillies, bell peppers and sweet peppers Sow any peppers indoors, to be on the safe side, as outdoor planting this time of year may not allow the seeds to germinate. Once fully grown you can add crunch and colour to your meals.

Beans and peas Such as French or runner Beans, garden peas, mangetout and sugarsnap peas. Sow your beans indoors during cold or unpredictable weather, or plant outside if the soil is warm. Protect any seedlings with plastic bottles or cloches if it’s looking a little more frosty. Sow your peas outdoors, and protect the seedlings with a mesh cover or cloche. Herbs For example, basil, dill, parsley, coriander and chervil. Young, tender-leaved plants like basil may need additional coverage and protection, however small batches of sown seeds will generally lead to successful growth. Root Vegetables Carrots, swedes, turnips and beetroot. Sow these outdoors, whatever the weather, but keep an eye on your beetroot, as germination isn’t guaranteed and they may require some coverage if the season’s looking damp and gloomy. Salad Items Things like lettuce, rocket, cucumbers and cress. Sow your leafy salad items under a cover during cold weather, but be sure to plant outside for a steady supply. Cucumbers can usually be sown outdoors, as long as they are under a cloche or frame.

SPECIAL FEATURE
Make the Most of those Long Weekends!
Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
As we’ve hit the bank holiday month and (most of you) have two additional work-free days to work with, why not make them count and do something fun or productive? You could start a new project, using our helpful DIY tips or just have some fun. Hopefully we can help you to get inspired - read on for some of our ideas on how to spend the month. Don’t Let the Weather get in the Way If we’re lucky enough to get some sunshine and few clouds this month, you could put together a BBQ or host a picnic for your family/friends. However, if the weather doesn’t seem like it’s on your side, throw an indoor dinner party, do some rainy day activities with the kids or have a game night. You could create arts and crafts with the little ones, dust off those board games and have the family over for dinner and a little competition (it’s a lot more fun than it sounds, and it doesn’t always end in arguments!). If this doesn’t sound like your thing, why not invite your best friend over for a movie night and drinks, or do some cooking together (good music makes it even more fun).
restaurant. We highly recommend booking a table at Peppe’s Italian (peppekingston. com) - family-friendly, great atmosphere, delicious food and affordable prices! Or why not head to the cinema, and check out one of Kingston’s other nearby restaurants? Alternatively, you could spend a warmer day in the park, or taking a walk by the river before stopping at one of the pubs and hanging out in the beer garden for a while? What better way to appreciate a nice day outside, before you get back to the working week? Soak up some History! This month is Local Community and History Month, which means there are various celebratory activities being held across the UK such as library exhibitions, local lectures and school trips. Why not get involved by visiting history.org.uk, or book yourself into one of our favourite historical walks with Kingston Tour Guides? Make sure you check out our Local History section for more information and some in-depth stories about Kingston’s incredible history. If history is your thing, why not even round up the kids and take them for a walk whilst sharing your knowledge? You could even

months later that it never happened, and we completely dropped the ball. Ask around ahead of time and see what everyone’s up to! You could make a big event out of it, head to the pub and see who’s in the area, or just have some one-to-one time with an old friend.
backtrack a few copies of Omni Local and share the stories from our Local History section with them. Meet with Animals This month also marks International Donkey Week, so that the world can show how much they care about members of the equine family. The Donkey Sanctuary gives everyone a chance to have close contact with adorable donkeys in wonderful settings. They can watch, groom or even cuddle real live donkeys at the Donkey Sanctuary and go on wonderful walks. Other activities involve guest speakers, bingo, demonstrations and a skittles evening. 10% of your accommodation bill is then donated to help care for the donkeys. If this seems a little out of your area however, why not take the kids to your local farm or head to the zoo this weekend? Even a trip to the aquarium could be an option. If it’s a particularly muggy day, heading to an aquarium has the added benefit of being nice and cool, especially if you’re suffering a sun headache. A good idea in this case would be to start buying cereals and checking newspapers for half price/kids go free vouchers for fun days out like this. Family Visits and Quick Breaks With a couple extra days for leisurely activity, why not spend some time with those relatives you’ve been meaning to pay a visit to? The same applies for friends – I’m sure we all recall a time we’ve uttered the words, “We should meet up soon!”, only to realise 23
You could even take it one step further and book you and a loved one (or loved ones) some time for camping, heading to a resort or visiting somewhere new. Why not take a road trip or go for a day or two to Paris? Forget about the money and any obligations you’ve got at the front of your mind, we’ve got months until the Summer holidays really start to kick in and only a couple of days to fill with fun until that happens. Spoil yourself and your loved ones!
If all else fails, why not take a look in our local events section and see what else is happening this month, or check this month’s Rose Theatre showings? Whatever you do, we hope you enjoy yourself.

THE HERBAL BED A Rose Theatre Kingston, English Touring Theatre and Royal & Derngate Northampton Production Tue 26 Apr - Sat 07 May Discover the scandal of Shakespeare’s daughter. Based upon real events from Stratford-uponAvon in the summer of 1613, The Herbal Bed is a powerful thriller about human desire. When William Shakespeare’s daughter is publicly accused of adultery, her family’s lives fall under the glare of intense public scrutiny. Culminating in a dramatic trial at Worcester Cathedral, the scandal threatens to destroy her family’s reputation within their tight-knit community. Originally produced to great acclaim by the Royal Shakespeare Company, The Herbal Bed was a huge hit in the West End and on Broadway, with an Olivier Award nomination and writer Peter Whelan winning Playwright of the Year. KING JOHN Directed by Trevor Nunn Sat 14 May - Sun 05 Jun Mad world! mad kings! mad composition! Following the sell-out success of The Wars of the Roses last year, we are delighted to welcome back legendary director Trevor Nunn to direct Shakespeare’s epic battle of ascension, King John. With its political allegiances and ruthless scheming, this is a rare opportunity to see some of Shakespeare’s most fascinating characters live on stage, including the wildly outspoken 24
and corrosive Philip the Bastard and King John, England’s weakest and vilest King, ‘a walking disaster of a ruler’ as described by contemporary chroniclers. The production marks Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary and will be the penultimate play in Nunn’s undertaking to direct all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays. FRAME The London Dance Film Festival Thu 9 Jun - Sun 12 Jun There will be dancing in the streets of Kingston in June as the first ever FRAME Dance Film Festival bursts into life throughout the town. Over four days, this exciting new festival includes film screenings in three spaces here at the Rose of both cutting-edge new work plus popular, much-loved dance film favourites. The Festival programme also boasts an array of special events, seminars, panel discussions and a Big Dance Bus in the Town Square! This packed weekend, culminates in an unmissable live performance by the internationally acclaimed dance company, BalletBoyz, who will present a mixed programme of work especially designed to round off the FRAME Festival with a bang. The events will be joined by dance films screening in competition at the festival and the day will culminate in the Festival Awards followed by an exclusive performance from BalletBoyz. fraternity-based chaos, after unintentionally picking a fight with a house full of young men next door. After making it through the storm and seeing the fraternity members move into adulthood, a new nightmare moves in next door: a sorority. Led by the feisty and rebellious Shelby (Chloe Grace Moretz, known from many titles including “Carrie” and “The 5th Wave”), this sorority is seemingly sweet at first, but in fact just as bad, if not worse than the previous fraternity that turned the neighbourhood upsidedown. Not a kid-friendly flick, but one that’ll ensure you and your friends will be rolling round with laughter. If you’ve seen the first movie - you’ll know what sort of insanity to expect! Previously, Mac Radner (played by “This is the End” and “The Interview” star, Seth Rogen) and his wife Kelly (Rose Byrne of “Bridesmaids” and “Spy”) moved into a new neighbourhood with their newborn. Little did they know they would be caught in a whirlwind of
Clearly in over their heads, once again, Mac and Kelly turn to the only experienced assistant they can track down - once their enemy, but now their friend Teddy Sanders (Zac Efron of “17 Again” and “Dirty Grandpa”). Can their unorthodox team find a way to survive the hit of a new sorority? If you love chaos and hilarity, give it a watch!

Daddy’s Home like a real Father. Although everything seems to be going well, things soon take a turn when the kids’ biological father, Dusty Mayron (Mark Wahlberg) makes an appearance. Brad feels himself becoming second place in the eyes of his family, while Dusty suddenly has to learn how to embrace being a good Dad and experiencing various struggles along the way. Comedy ensues as they find themselves in competition with each other, but a lot is learned from either side. Comedy’s favourite Anchorman, Will Ferrell and renowned teddy-bear companion, Mark Wahlberg have teamed up for yet another hilarious flick. This is a familiar pairing for fans who’ve seen “The Other Guys”, and although there’s a lot more conflict this time round - this film does not disappoint. Brad Whitaker (played by Will Ferrell) is a radio host, and a highly devoted stepfather to his wife’s children - all he wants is to be loved and respected 25
Written and directed by Sean Anders, who brought us “Horrible Bosses 2” and “We’re the Millers”, you can expect so many laughable moments, but parental guidance is advised when it comes to the younger audience. A definite winner for Ferrell fans and Wahlberg worshippers.

A POSITIVE CHANGE If a lack of discipline is what’s been holding you back in your mission to get in shape for summer, then Forever’s F.I.T. programme could hold the answer. “Discipline is one of the main challenges that people face when trying to shape up, because that is what allows us to make changes to our current behaviour,” says strength and conditioning coach, Nick Smith, from NS Performance. “Unfortunately, as people, we don’t like change really; we are much happier to maintain the status quo.”
ensure a long-lasting lifestyle change,” he adds.
So, what can we do to tackle our discipline deficiency and make that positive change? “Having a set format to follow is important as it helps to make the change easier for us, and it takes away some of the choices as well,” says Nick. This is where F.I.T. comes in. This 69-day programme is structured enough to help inspire discipline in your daily eating and exercise habits, but not so prescriptive that it puts you off. Instead, you are provided with tasty meal and snack ideas to help keep things interesting and keep you on the straight and narrow.
The F.I.T. programme is supported by a variety of easy-to-follow online exercise tips that can be carried out at home alone, or with friends at the gym – whatever works for you. MOTORING
Cosmetic Damages Are you bothered by the sight of scuffs along your car, but haven’t had time to get them seen to? Why not minimise the damage yourself by following our tips?
Supplied by: Leanna Carl-Omni Local
1.Examine the depth Once you know how serious the damage is, you can decide your next move and what tools you’ll need. The body of a car is supposed to have four layers to it: the clear coating, paint job, primer and eventually its steel body. If the damage only goes as far as the top coat, you can take care of the scuff yourself. Otherwise you may need to seek help from a professional.
direction of the scratch. Never sand down further than the top layer or you’ll end up with ridges or dents. If however the scratch is deeper than the clear coat layer, you will need to sand the area a little further.
2. Check that it’s definitely scratched Not all vehicles are as hard-wearing as you would like. Certain types have a softer coating than most, meaning scratches are almost impossible to avoid. The slightest brush with another vehicle can leave a slightly raised debris along the paint job. If this is the case, you’ll find it a lot easier to remove the mark.
5. Rubbing compound Use a rubbing compound on the area you’ve sanded down in order to even out the surface. Gently polish with a buffer for a minute or so, before the compound dries. Once it begins to look smoother and less dull, you’re done! Avoid buffing the same area for more than a few seconds at a time.
3. Getting started Give your vehicle a good clean before you start repairing. Leaving dirt behind will just lead to more damages along the way, so be careful. If there is a line of debris on your car, you can wipe it away by spraying it down with water. Just make sure the area is completely dry before you move any further.
6. Finishing touches Wash the area again with clean water and towel away any remaining residue. You can clear out any crevices by using a toothbrush. Next, wax the repaired area and buff a little more. Rinse the area one more time and stand back to take a look at the progress!
4. Sand the area
If the problem is worse than mentioned or you have any difficulties at all, get in touch with your local vehicle professional.
Gently file down the area with a piece of sandpaper, making sure to follow the

TRAVEL
Spring Breaks and Summer Holidays
Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
Spring is now here and we are all turning our thoughts to our summer vacations, so exciting times ahead! There are so many travel options available to choose from, so whether it is something you book yourself or an organised trip don’t forget to do some holiday planning. It may help to make sure you’ve got a checklist to hand, in order to get things sorted in time. Here are some notes to consider before making your checklist: • Are you going away with a group/solo? • Family, friendly vacation or romantic getaway? • Are you having a girls/boys weekend away, or holding a hen/stag trip? • Are you taking a gap year, or assisting other communities abroad? • Are you planning for someone else, such as your child on a school trip? • Do you enjoy activities, lazing by the pool or full cultural experiences? • Are you thinking countryside or citybased? Once you know what you are planning and who for, it’ll be easier to start putting together all the finer details and ensuring you have the essentials covered. Checklist • Do all your clothes still fit for the occasion, or do you need to do some shopping? Perhaps consider buying yourself some new Summer clothes, sandals, flip-flops, glasses; maybe even treat yourself to a new floppy hat! • Do you and your children have a passport and are they in date? • Have you had your inoculations? • Do you need a visa? Do you need to get passport photos? • Have you figured out pet care? (eg. kennels, homes, catteries, house sitters) • Have you arranged your Holiday Insurance? • Is your E111 valid for reciprocal medical cover in EU countries? • Make sure you book ahead for ferries or hovercraft crossings.
33
• Do you have all the change you’ll need for tolls? • Remember to stock up on the sun lotion/ aftersun. Travel Money Don’t forget your money! If you are travelling to Europe it may or may not be euros that you need. Croatia and Turkey were popular holiday spots last year, but they aren’t in the euro currency zone. Exotic places might require more planning, as currencies may require an order. Check which currency the country accepts and purchase before travelling so that when you arrive you can arrange things like taxis, buses, trains, porters, trolleys, or buy meals and drinks. The last thing you want to do (especially if you’re feeling jetlagged or tired) is to rush around trying to change your money up as soon as you’ve arrived. This is where companies like First Exchange can help. First Exchange offers great rates with no commission and over 40 different currencies, including next business day orders for other tradeable currencies. They also offer Western Union money transfer services. This page is sponsored by First Exchange UK:

FINANCE
Time for Action in 20162017 Tax Year
Supplied by: Mukesh Savani - Foster Denovo
Most people are busy with their lives, work and family thinking that they have all the time in the world. Their busy lives don’t allow them to realise that this is no dress rehearsal, but the actual performance and there is no encore. This year has had enormous changes in pension regulation, the pension freedom. The tax and other regulatory changes mean that there are great opportunities which will pass by most people. The new pension freedom rules are not very well understood. How can your pension fund be passed to anyone you want on death? What are the new pensions and tax changes proposed in the recent budget? Does your preserved scheme or final salary pension benefits provide all the choices of the new pension freedom? The tax changes around Buy to Let properties will increase tax burdens for landlords with Buy to Let properties. How do the new increase in the main residence nil rate band work? Is it possible to mitigate Capital Gains Tax on the sale of rental property or defer it for some years? Is there a way to get tax relief on your life assurance premiums? Finally, should all the shouting in the news about offshore trusts put people off legitimate planning approved by the HMRC? Are family controlled trusts for the “mega rich” or can most families benefit from
using them to mitigate Inheritance Tax and also protect their assets and home in the bloodline for generations, away from the taxman, future divorces and creditors? There have been enormous changes in legislation and taxation this year. If you have been too busy and missed all the available opportunities, now would be the time for action. So, what’s the next step? A good start is to have an initial meeting with Mukesh Savani, a Financial Planner specialising in this area. He can provide an initial Discovery meeting free of cost to you. After which, it would be clear if there are issues to be addressed and then we can work together on creating a strategy and timescale of actions. Protecting your business and family can be more straight-forward than you think. If you would like to learn more about your options and opportunities, please call Mukesh Savani on 07948 543839 or email mukesh.savani@fosterdenovo.com.

My years as a lettings negotiator for some of the high street’s biggest chains convinced me that there was a better way to deliver efficient, professional and helpful services to landlords. When I started Lucie White & Company in 2007 I knew that I wanted to offer a different, more personalised approach – and our philosophy still reflects that. Our take on lettings and property management has three main themes: One size rarely fits all We are not a high street agent with branded

RESTAURANT REVIEW
Taste of Turkey This month we visited Taste of Turkey, which opened just last summer, situated next to Fat Boys Café. The restaurant is a friendly, family-run business with a modern Turkish style, and gentle traditional music, which is perfect for a casual meal, or great for parties and meetings. The menu gives a wide selection of Turkish and British food, non spicy to spicy house specials, kebabs, bbq, burgers, steaks and fish. We were greeted by friendly staff and delicious complimentary large olives and dips, along with a freshly made turkish nan bread to nibble on while the owner prepared our meal.
and a lovely sauce. All meat is Halal and there is also a wide selection of wines and beers. Afterwards we sipped some Turkish coffee and tea to end a delightful evening. Parking is available on the doorstep and there are tables outside for the Summer. Takeaways are available, delivery or collection and students and collections receive 10% discount. Thank you to Anna and Erkan Gucluer for a lovely evening!
Starters are hot or cold and reasonably priced; the mixed hot mezze gave a nice selection of whitebait, falafel, sigara boregi - (filo pastry wrapped round white cheese), sucuk izgara – (a spicy Turkish sausage) and grilled halloumi. Their traditional Yogurtlu Adana was a delicious mix of spiced minced lamb topped with yoghurt, drizzled butter
