CARE IN THE COMMUNITY
THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: CHARITY Katy Spragg - Fitness from the
Dementia and exercise Cognitive improvement...

.....Studies show that exercise may improve memory and slow down mental decline. It has also been shown to have a positive effect on depression, helping with self esteem and confidence. The following is a list of some, but by no means exhaustive, reasons it is a good idea for people living with dementia to exercise: 1, improves heart health and the circulation of blood around the body. In return this helps to reduce high blood pressure. 2, works towards maintaining strong and flexible muscles and joints, allowing people to stay in their own home and remaining independent for longer. This helps to improve the ability to carry out everyday activities, i.e. dressing oneself, cooking and cleaning. 3, reduces the risk of stroke and diabetes.
For more information and advice, please feel free to contact me directly (Katy Spragg). I am a personal trainer who works with adults living with learning disabilities, dementia, physical disabilities and more. You can find out about chair aerobics in the local area, carried out by Katy at The Greenwood Centre in Hampton Hill. Email: katy@fitnessfromtheheart.co.uk Telephone: 020 3893 0010 Mobile: 07428 755 254 Join us fortnightly on Wednesdays (from 3rd May) at the Golden Memories cafe. Golden Memories is a cafe for people in Richmond Borough living with Dementia, and for their Care Givers. It’s a place where they can socialise in a friendly, relaxed, safe environment and enjoy activities such as quizzes, chair aerobics, singing, art etc. Care givers may leave their loved ones in a safe environment or may choose to stay and enjoy the cafe with them from 2-4pm.

COMMUNITY PERSON
Councillor Geoff Austin
Supplied by: Councillor Geoff Austin
My year as Mayor of Kingston will shortly be ending, so this is a good time to look back at some of the memorable events I have attended. Without doubt, the most exciting time was a week spent leading a Council delegation to South Korea to investigate the possibilities of twinning arrangements. These will hopefully be coming to fruition over the next few years. Nearer home, a really inspiring event was hosting the Mayor’s Awards for Community Service. There were over forty individuals nominated, all of whom deserved recognition, and the task of narrowing them down to a final thirteen winners was an almost impossible task. This just indicated how many amazing citizens live among us
of my wonderful wife Sheila, and from my deputy mayor, Councillor Rowena Bass. And to end on a slightly amusing note, it’s not just formal events that the Mayor has to attend. Here, the Mayoress and I are pictured dancing with a giant pig at a charity Dance-a-thon in the town centre. A Mayor’s life is certainly never dull!
By the end of my year as Mayor I will have attended over 300 events! I have really enjoyed my many visits to local schools during the year. From junior schools, where the young pupils have been fascinated to learn about the role of the Mayor, the robes, chain and mace, to senior schools, where I have been asked to judge musical performances and public speaking events.

POLICE ADVICE
Monthly Advice from the Met Police
Supplied by: Alison McWinnie - MET Police
As I write this article, the horrific terrorist attack in Westminster is still fresh in my mind, having only happened a couple of weeks ago. Kingston Police gave a fantastic talk on counter terrorism last month.
• Who has bought or stored large amounts of chemicals, fertilisers or gas cylinders for no obvious reason. • Who is renting property. Lock-ups, garages and sheds can be used by terrorists to store equipment.
What are the key messages coming out from that? Communities can defeat terrorism. If you see or hear something that could be terrorist related, trust your instincts and call the confidential Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321. Your call could save lives.
• Who is using recording equipment, including camera phones, or seen making notes/ sketches of security details.
Terrorists live among us when they are planning attacks. Please be on the look-out for the unusual - some activity or behaviour which strikes you as not quite right and out of place in your normal day to day life. You may feel it is probably nothing, but unless you trust your instincts and tell police, they won’t be able to judge whether the information you have is important or not. No piece of information is considered too small or insignificant. The Met’s specially trained officers would rather take lots of calls which are made in good faith, but have innocent explanations, than not getting any calls at all. All information passed to the police is treated in the strictest of confidence. What is suspicious behaviour? It could include someone: • Whose behaviour has undergone an extreme and unexplained change.
What should you do in the unfortunate incident of a firearms and weapons attack? Do watch the film Run, Hide, Tell, available on YouTube :https://youtu.be/QUCW_mk35Xc which gives advice on what to do. For more information and advice visit www. met.police/terrorism. LOCAL CHARITY
THIS MONTH’S CHARITY Supplied by:
Marfan Syndrome: What the @*%@.. is it??
Louise Taylor
Marfan Syndrome Sucks, and believe me you don’t want it! It is a debilitating disease that affects all or some of the eyes, heart and skeleton. As it is genetic, most sufferers inherit it from a parent, but 25% of sufferers get it purely as a result of a faulty gene. So it could affect any of us directly or indirectly. Do You Know Someone Who Has Marfan – Here’s the Bad News Have you ever seen someone who looks unusually tall? Maybe they are also wearing thick glasses or are experiencing severe limb pain? Chances are they have Marfan. In fact there are one in 2,000 people living with the disease in the UK and scarily, almost half of them are unaware of this which can prove fatal as patients who are undiagnosed and therefore untreated tend to have a short life expectancy. Untreated Marfan can lead to ballooning of the aorta (the body’s main artery extending from the heart to the abdomen) which then can burst and cause cardiac arrest. However with diagnosis, advances in Marfan research means that sufferers are now able to live a long and full life. Who is the Marfan Trust and What Does it Do – Here’s the Good News Thanks to the Marfan Trust Charity (est.1989) (Marfan Trust) more people are being diagnosed with Marfan and are consequently receiving the latest available treatments, with life expectancy having been dramatically increased. At the moment the Marfan Trust is currently one of two UK charities specialising in providing vital education and support for all sufferers and their families. However, the Marfan Trust has the only dedicated UK research facility called The Sonalee Lab which is based in St Georges Medical School in Tooting where life saving Marfan research is championed. The Marfan Trust Needs You! The Marfan Trust is funded solely by private donations and is therefore constantly under pressure. In particular, the Sonalee Lab is currently under threat of closure as existing funding has dwindled. If funding doesn’t improve, vital research into Marfan will cease
9
in the UK which would be disastrous for sufferers. This is why the Marfan Trust needs your help. To help us continue our life saving research we need your support. In addition to new donors we desperately need sponsors who are willing to fund events, provide prizes, partner with us or provide us with any other practical support. In return we would be happy to publicise your business at our events, on our website and social media pages and in other communications. For More Information please contact Louise Taylor T: 020 8725 2940; E: ltaylor@sgul. ac.uk. To find out more about the disease visit http://www.marfantrust.org/marfansyndrome/what-is-marfan-syndrome. Lend with Care: is a revolutionary way to help people throughout the developing world transform their future. Set up by one of the world’s leading aid and development organisations, lendwithcare.org enables families to find their own route out of poverty. This micro-finance loan system allows us to have impact on individuals wanting support in setting-up and/or operating their businesses.
We have sent assistance to Haiti and Cuba following Hurricane Matthew and joined in the support for the East African famine. We are also looking to the future by organising an activity week where young students from Poland, Germany and England get together annually. African Vision Malawi – we had an inspiring talk from Heather Palmer updating us on the installation and opening of the ‘food mill’ at Kafutwe part funded by our Club. LOCAL HISTORY
Mystery Walk On Saturday 1st April (April Fools’ Day!!) the Kingston Tour Guides came together to take invited guests on a mystery walk around our historic town.
Supplied by: Mike Seigel - Kingston Tour Guides
Instead of the usual format of one guide leading people on a tour, this “mystery” walk involved a large number of guides appearing at key points in the town dressed as important characters from Kingston’s history. The afternoon started with the arrest in the Market Place of the notorious highwayman, Jerry Abershawe, who was placed in the stocks – such as had once existed there for offenders! As the guests walked around the town, they learnt a great deal about its history from such people as Esther Hammerton, the daughter of the verger killed by the collapse of the Saxon Chapel in 1730, and the Duchess of Clarence (wife of the future king William IV) who opened the new bridge in 1828 and gave her name to Clarence Street, the now bustling thoroughfare of our shopping centre.
tours regularly given, and the Mystery Walk ended with two important royal personages: at the Coronation Stone was King Athelstan, crowned in Kingston in 925, who went on to rid the rest of the Saxon Kingdoms of the Danes and thus be called the first “King of All England”; and outside Jack Wills the guests were greeted by Queen Anne, who was the subject of my article in March and whose gilded statue by Francis Bird was put up in the Market place in 1706, dominating it to this day.
The guests learnt more about shopping from Frank Bentall, and about the success of the town in the 18th and 19th centuries from Henry Shrubsole, the mayor who died in office and who gives his name to the impressive memorial in the Market Place. Other characters telling the history were William Sillar, from the Native Guano company, Charlie Hanks, a watchman, and Edward Muybridge, the famous photographer and inventor of the zooipraxiscope – forerunner of the cine camera. There was also a “modern day” guide to represent the

The Cooking Corner Spicy Chicken - Serves 2 Ingredients: • 200g skinless, boneless chicken breasts, cut into strips • 100g mushrooms, thinly sliced • 80g large red pepper, cored, deseeded and cut into strips • 1 medium size onion, finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, crushed (optional) • 200g cucumber, cut into 1 cm cubes • 1 tbsp olive oil Dry marinade: • • • • • • • •
2 tbsp ground cumin 2 tbsp ground coriander 1 tbsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp ground nutmeg 2 tsps ground paprika 1 tsp ground black pepper 1 tsp curry powder ½ tsp Himalayan pink salt
the vegetables. Any left over spice mixture can be kept for future use. 3. Heat the olive oil in a wok or large frying pan and fry over a medium heat for 5-7 minutes until the chicken begins to colour and is tender. 4. Add the mushrooms, pepper, onion and garlic and cook for a further 5 minutes. 5. Serve at once with the cucumber.
Method: 1. Make the dry marinade: thoroughly combine cumin, coriander, cinnamon, nutmeg, paprika, black pepper, curry powder and salt in a jug or bowl and shake well. I find that a used, cleaned jam jar works really well for mixing the spices. 2. In a large bowl, toss the chicken strips with as much dry marinade as you like, cover and leave to stand for a few minutes, while you prepare

ARTS
June is on the way... ...and for us KAOS members, June means ART! I do not want to imply that we only do art in June, but in June, on the weekends of 10-11th and 1718th Kingston’s artists and makers will open their homes, studios, sheds and spare rooms to the art loving public of Kingston, and beyond. Over 90 painters, printmakers, photographers, sculptors, ceramicists, textile artists, glass artists, from KAOS, ASC, and Fusion Arts will be showing their work in 17 venues in and around Kingston.
Supplied by: Rachel Pearcey - KAOS
Open Studios is a wonderful opportunity for artists and makers to share what we do with the general public and with each other. Many of us work in not very splendid isolation for most of the year, so two weekends spent sharing ideas, meeting art lovers can be great fun, and quite relaxing. It is also an excellent opportunity for us artists and makers to ‘Spring clean’ our studios and take stock of what we have created over the past year. The work on show is always wonderfully eclectic, with something sure to suite every taste and pocket, from tiny to huge; if you don’t see anything to tempt you then works may be commissioned. Many of our artists have taken part in exhibitions all over the world, including the prestigious Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy in London, so as well as something you would love on your wall you may even be buying an investment! This being England the weather of course plays a big part in how successful the Open Studios event is and this year it will be RAINING CATS AND DOGS as well. KAOS invited young children from schools all over Kingston to join us in a ‘postcard event’: between us we have produced hundreds of postcards featuring cats and dogs; sketches, prints, collages, watercolours, digital images, drawings. All the cards will be on show and for sale outside All Saints Church on Clarence Street on the 3rd of June, and thereafter upstairs at Cass Art; they are all priced at £5 and all the money is 15
being donated to the charity Momentum. Momentum works locally in Surrey and South West London, to support families whose children have cancer or a lifelimiting condition. If you live in the area, you will receive a flyer through your door, or alternatively you can pick up a catalogue at Kingston museum, the library, Cass Art, Pullingers or one of the many cafés around town. Our trail map is included, or can be downloaded from www. kingstonartistsopenstudios.co.uk/show. So, come and see us – if you visit at least 4 venues, you’re in with a chance to win £100 worth of art. All the studios will be open from 11-5pm on all four days.

GARDENING
Warmer weather is coming
Supplied by: Janet Bacon
As the temperature is on the rise and the days are getting longer. The bulbs are fading but elsewhere plants and shrubs are putting on growth and it is time to start thinking about your summer garden. Hanging Baskets / Patio Containers Now is the time to plant up your hanging baskets or patio containers with fuchsias and tender perennials. A visit to the garden centre can be overwhelming with all the choices but help is at hand as they now offer packs of ready selected plants which are chosen for the same growing conditions. However if, like me, you like to make your own selections then I find the easiest way to choose a good combination is to place one or two plants together and if you like the result, add a few more.
Rhododendrons/Azaleas May is also the month for rhododendrons. They come in all sizes and need an acidic or lime-free soil, but if you do not have the right soil then they can be grown in pots on the patio. Dwarf varieties are the best to choose for pots and yet are still generous with their flowers – try the hybrids of Rhododendron yakushimanum.

LEARNING
Last Minute Learning
Supplied by: Celia Osborne Numberworks’n’words
The end of the year is creeping up fast, just one more term and with it exams, assessments, tests, reports etc Has the reading, spelling, times tables, problem solving, writing - or whatever has been the sticking point, come on over the last 6 months or is it still a struggle? If you think there is still an issue now is the time to go for it, after all about 10 weeks and the year is over! Set an achievable target for how to move on and stick to it. At tea time: Reading practice If your son really won’t pick up a book and read (despite the fact that he can), what about finding a short funny bit in the paper everyday to share? There’s usually something that’s more light hearted or engaging (finding it though is your job!). Mental maths (at breakfast?) What about the puzzle page in the paper with the quick maths agility puzzles. Just the easy one every day (even 3 a week) is good for anyone who sort of knows their tables. Table facts If chanting tables hasn’t worked for your daughter, what about picking off 2 hard facts per week (7x9 and 9x4 as well as 9x7 and 4x9) stick them on the fridge on a fluorescent postit. Test them 4 or 5 times per day, needn’t be boring if you make it jokey (why not make a rhyme?). Week two choose 2 more, but keep on practicing the first ones. If you stick at it for half a term, you should see real progress, after a term most tables could be licked. Spellings If there’s nothing coming from school, or it’s not relevant, pick 2 each week and learn all the words linked to those: 17
E.g. Easy Ones: go/going/goes, medium: cross/crossed/across/crossly or difficult: Special (say it speck i al if it helps) and then learn especially, specialist, speciality etc Quick Writing For getting words down on paper quickly, how fast can a sentence be written which includes that word? Use coloured felt tips, or gel pens - makes it more rewarding, so long as it’s neat (ish)! If you think more help is needed, give me a ring on 020 8399 1234 or drop me a line at surbiton@numberworks.com to book an assessment We can talk about how Numberworks’nWords can help. You’ll be surprised, even the most reluctant children enjoy it!

HEALTH & WELLBEING
Change How you Think of Change
Supplied by: Claire Dyson - Untangle Your Life
Struggling to get started on changing some aspect of your life? Perhaps adopting DiClemente’s and Prochaska’s way of looking at change will help. Rather than thinking of change as a single act their research suggests it is a process with a number of stages including lapses along the way (please refer to photo top right). A lapse is exactly that, a small slip down the spiral, not a collapse. Be gentle with yourself and avoid “all or nothing” thinking. If your goal is to get fitter by walking 10,000 steps a day and you didn’t manage it today that’s OK, no need to set fire to your trainers and face plant pizza. Precontemplation (Not Ready) We’re either unaware being unfit is problematic or acutely aware but unsure what to do or not confident we can do anything after past, unsuccessful, forays into Lycra. We underestimate the benefits of changing and overestimate costs, both monetary and in terms of the effort involved. Contemplation (Getting Ready) We’re coming around to the idea that there might be some advantages to the change e.g. being able to enjoy physical activity with family and friends versus dreading it. That said, we’re alternating between thinking this and believing the work involved is just too much, too uncomfortable. Preparation (Ready) We stop assuming change is too tough and start researching how to go about it e.g. join other people who are trying to get fitter so we feel less conspicuous. We try out different classes to narrow down activities we like. We buy the fitness DVD of a celebrity or sports personality we admire so we can workout in the privacy of our own home when it suits us. Action 19
We’re done preparing and ready to go for it. We know what we are going to do, we have a goal and a plan. We have put in place the support systems that we need and actually, you know what, it is beginning to feel a bit exciting. Crucially this is not a “quick fix” rather we know that slow and steady is the way to embed lasting change. Maintenance Once we’ve got fit, we have evidence we can do it, have been through (and survived) lapses so we feel more confident in our ability to sustain our fitness and motivated to keep at it because of the benefits we’re feeling. www.untangleyourlife.co.uk

The LP Partnership – HELO LX the new Fitness and Wellness wristband
Supplied by: Lorraine Tarbitten - Synergy
I like to view the market with an open mind to see how new ways of working will benefit the Mind, Body, and Spirit. The trends on the markets do show that we are using more and more apps and gadgets than ever before. Does this ease our Mind, aid our Body, and allow our Spirit more space for more enlightening ventures? And is the new way of thinking hitting the market with regards to monitoring our fitness as well as our wellness, by taking care of our wellness at a higher level? More conditions are being reported that need or would benefit from constant monitoring like Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Heart Conditions and many more. Plus, would it calm your mind to know that if a loved one is out, they have an SOS function at a touch of a button giving you their exact GPS location? Are elderly relatives a constant worry to ensure they are safe and well when you are not there? Would you like to have their vital functions uploaded to your phone no matter where you live? Would you like to be one step ahead of the trend knowing developers are constantly working to bring you the latest technology which is accessible with an application upgrade, to provide more peace of mind? The strain on the national health service is rising. Be prepared by having all your results and trends on your vitals like blood pressure, blood Oxygen, heart rate, sleep quality, breath rate, emotions, fatigue, steps, calories, and ECG results available in real time to share with your GPs and Consultants. 1. How much peace of mind would that give you?
21
2. Would keeping an eye on your body help you maintain good health? 3. How much could that help the NHS to then continue with their testing? Now Wor(l)d Global Network has brought you the most advanced monitoring wristband which will monitor all the above and includes the new Diabetes blood sugar level monitoring without a needle - which will be available later this year! This is such an exciting new era for the health and wellness industry, adding trends, fashion, providing real-time measurements, advanced services and a dedicated app providing monitoring and protection for you and your families. SPECIAL FEATURE
Enjoying those Bank Holiday Weekends
Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
With a little more daylight to spare and that perfect weather for beer gardens and barbecues, you’d be crazy not to start planning out your long weekends now. There are always going to be more options if you’ve managed to save a little money since the year started, but cash isn’t always essential. All you need is a little enthusiasm, good company and the extra time to spare. Here are some ideas to help you get planning. Be productive with your time Why not take on a new project, and give yourself a chance to get creative? If you want to take things outdoors and involve the whole family, you could set up a scavenger hunt. Test their skills and the way they think, whilst having fun and a little bit of exercise! Or keep things simple and set up a friendly game outside or host a barbecue for you and your friends. Whichever suits, make use of the season while its still here!
It doesn’t take a lot of money to enjoy the holidays. Spend a day in the park with some homemade sandwiches, get on your bike (literally!) or go and feed the ducks. However, if hayfever gets in the way and you decide to keep your distance from grassy areas, why not see if there are any free museums or galleries near you? Whilst you’ve got those loved ones round, why not get to planning your Summer holidays? Figure out what you’re going to do this year and how to go about it and you’ll have something else to look forward to in the next few months! Whether its a short break or a long one, its about taking advantage of the holiday as best you can. The important
If the heat kicks in, try making homemade ice lollies, smoothies and milkshakes - and for the older ones enjoying them, add a shot of a sweet amaretto or any of your other favourite liqueurs to give it that extra kick on your night off or for your BBQ guests! Don’t depend too much on cash flow

case, you can get some great nature shots and silvery-skied London landscapes. Grab a buddy to walk and talk with whilst you get snapping, and if you’ve got a decent camera, all the better for those ‘duck for shelter and take pics from afar’ shots. But there’s some pretty decent camera phones these days, so whatever you’ve got at your disposal will help with a portfolio of stunning photos.
thing is not to get stressed over the cost Summer holidays are still a way away, and with our British weather, you need to make use of these days off while you can! Spend a weekend away Book yourself into a bed and breakfast nothing says day off like not having to worry about chores, cooking and work. Leave it all at the office and enjoy the long weekend whilst you spend it in remote and naturefilled places like the New Forest, or go even further and spend a few days in Scotland or Ireland - visit another country without worrying about spending a whole day on travel. Alternatively, just book into a hotel in Brighton or Bournemouth and have some fun at the beach! If the weather’s being a bit unpredictable, why not book a hotel that has an indoor pool or spa? Enjoy a jacuzzi soak or take advantage of the spas, whatever takes the stress off and makes you feel spoilt and pampered! Take a road trip You can always pack things up and bundle into the car to reach your getaway destination, but why not make the journey part of the fun? Play travel games with the family, make a lot of stops along the way and try out new restaurants, or set yourself more than one finishing location to break things up and get a better look at what’s out there! You could even combine a road trip with some camping. Stop off in one location and spend a night enjoying the outdoors, then pack up and move your camping gear to another location that’s within reach - that way no one gets bored and you get to add even more sightseeing to your itinerary! Photography One of my favourite ways to spend a bank holiday is getting an early start and heading out to Richmond Park or up to central London for some picture-taking! In my experience, sometimes bank holidays end up being the rainiest days of the year, but even in this 23
Or, if you like, you can join a professional photography walk in your area and get an entire group thing going, provided the dates line up with your plans. The great thing with saving these walks for bank holidays is that a lot of the time (particularly when going early in the day) there are a lot less people around as a result of less shops being open. This means no (politely) getting people to move out of the way of your shot! Always make those free days count, plan ahead and get as many of your friends and loved ones to join you on those long weekends.

City and country, old and new collide at Colonel Pawar’s ancestral home – the shabby and un-chic Lakshman Villa. A DELIGHTFUL CULINARY ADVENTURE AT MOKSHA, NEW MALDEN On April 11, 2017, Moksha UHVWDXUDQW RIÀ FLDOO\ ODXQFKHG in New Malden in the presence of Mayor Geoffrey Austin and lady Mayoress Shiela Austin and Deputy Mayor Rowena Baas as well as ex-Mayor Roy Arora and lady Mayor Manisha Arora. There were members of local press as well as loyal customers. The evening kicked off with a talk by Mayor Geoffrey Austin who was very complimentary about Moksha and said a restaurant of this caliber was need in the area. We
would like to introduce you to Moksha, a new Indian restaurant in your area.
PDGH VSHFLÀ FDOO\ WR PDWFK spicy food, was enjoyed by all.
Head chef Sanjay Kumar and his team presented some stunning canapes such as cocktail size samosas, achari (pickling spices) chicken tikka, cocktail shami kebab and mini potato & sweet corn cakes. Each mouthful created sensation on the palate and what’s more, each of the delicious morsels tasted distinctly different which takes a lot of skill to achieve.
Arjun Sigh Rawat and Rajeev Danga, the two founder members of Moksha, were very attentive to each and every invitee even during such a busy night. This style of service, combined with exquisite food, differentiates Moksha from many other Indian restaurants who do not realise that good food and good service go hand in hand are equally in making a restaurant its mark; Moksha has certainly done that within a short time.
The main course came on an Indian-style platter (thali) which is a large stainless steel place with small steel bowl all around the edge and artfully placed rice and naan in the centre. The little bowls contained the everyday staple daal (lentils) followed by beautifully spiced Old Delhistyle Chicken and a tonguetingling lamb curry both of which I absolutely loved. All the dishes were supremely authentic with decadently different, amicable blends of spicing. The wine, from the Sula wine group of India is

COMPETITION REVIEW
Strawberry Hill Golf Club What a wonderful hidden gem this 9 hole course at Strawberry Hill is. They go out of their way to be informal, friendly and don’t themselves too seriously – it’s supposed to be fun after all. Women make up almost half the membership, the highest percentage of almost any club in the country, contributing in no small part to their unique relaxed atmosphere. It may be over 100 years old but it’s clearly stood the test of time. Over the last 18 months a lot has been going on to improve the facilities and it now has a hugely popular junior section. Last year they introduced the Adult Academy section via their Get Into Golf scheme, where newcomers or those returning to the game, can gain some valuable tuition and knowhow from the qualified coaches, who run courses throughout the spring & summer seasons (£30 for 4x1 hour lessons). The attraction of the Academy is that it allows beginners to become more familiar with the club and the game over the passage of the year, receive regular coaching from their professional. We know playing on the course can be daunting for beginners but those joining the Academy last year voted it a success and are now playing regularly.

So why not look them up on www.shgc.net or just pop in and have a look round. Club professional Peter Buchan and his team offer a range of tuition courses and also run one of the best-stocked pro shops of any golf club in the area with a good choice of equipment including Callaway, Taylor Made and others. Beautiful surroundings, idyllic location, & a friendly welcome, what could be better?
