Q1: Hi Richard, could you please give our readers an overview of your business? A1: We are based near Camberley on the surrey border with Hampshire and Berkshire. We have been in business for 15 years, initially helping homes and businesses reduce limescale and fuel consumption, now we also offer a commercial energy brokerage service to businesses and other ways to reduce consumption or energy. Q2: How long have you been in this line of business now? A2: As a scientist, I could see how the conditioners had an effect on fuel and water and tried them for ourselves, getting great results, We decided to market the products, have gone through several different versions to get the best results and now our customers canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe the difference they can make. Q3: What do you enjoy most about working in this type of industry?

Romford. We have shops, hotels, garages, body shops, manufacturers and factories to name a few. Our conditioners work just as well in homes and businesses on gas and oil and the water conditioners are mostly installed in residential properties, but many businesses too. Our furthest customer is in Manchester although most are in south and south east. Q6: What is the most common problem encountered in your line of work? A6: Scepticism mostly, as people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see how they can work but our testimonials speak for themselves as well as test data backing up our claims. Some homes also have boxed in pipework, so fitting can be a challenge but we usually find a solution. Q7: Do you have any special offers/ promotions on at the moment? Have you ever wondered what happens after you report a crime? Hello Readers! The circumstances around every crime are unique, so the way police investigate each one can vary. Every investigation starts with the same steps to ensure all the relevant information is gathered and you are kept informed. The Investigation Process First, we’ll make sure that we’re the correct police force to be investigating the reported crime. For example, if it took place in a train station this would be a matter for British Transport Police- we would send them your report and they would continue the investigation.

Possible outcomes Once we’ve made a decision, a Met officer will contact you to explain and offer any advice if needed. The Investigation will be Closed This happens when we have completed our initial steps and there are no further leads we can proportionately follow at that time. However, sometimes we receive new information or new evidence, in which case we can reopen the investigation and send you an update.

Once we’ve established we’re the correct police force, we’ll issue you with a crime reference number. How quickly we can do this depends on the complexity of the incident and number of other authorities involved. Next, an officer will conduct an initial investigation. This could involve talking to witnesses, assessing the crime scene, reviewing CCTV or video footage, gathering other evidence such as forensic samples, or searching our intelligence database.

Regardless of whether this happens, your report is important- determining where and when we deploy police resources to detect and prevent crime. OR- Your Case will be Investigated Further

We’ll then carry out an ‘investigative assessment’ - where we review all of the information we have gathered and decide whether to investigate your report further.

An investigating officer will be assigned to you. They’ll act as your single point of contact during the investigation, answering any of your questions and keeping you updated as the case progresses. If you need to provide a statement, they’ll talk you through it. And in the unlikely event you need to go to court, they’ll introduce you to a member of the Witness Care Unit who will guide you each step of the way.

We’ll base our decision on three key factors: •The severity of the offence •The likelihood it can be solved •The resources needed to investigate it

Love Kingston Week

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who supported Love Kingston on or around Love Kingston Day, 14th February. The week kicked off on 9th Feb with a Mayor’s Gala Dinner in aid of Love Kingston, raising a whopping £20,000 for the vulnerable and needy in our borough. Our main sponsors for the event were The Rowan Bentall Trust, Russell Cooke Solicitors and CHD Living. We are grateful to all the businesses and guests who supported the evening. The morning of the 14th was scheduled for the Love Kingston Green Radio Show at the Kingston Environment Centre. Guests included Mayor cllr Julie Pickering who spoke about being Mayor and why she chose to supoort Love Kingston, and musician Michael Armstrong performed live in the studio, with everyone ending in a Buddy Holly sing song! Other events around Love Kingston Day included: Beat the Pooch goalie sporting activities with Places for People and a concert courtesy of Euphonix Choir in Eden Walk shopping centre. There were signature cookies by DoubleTree Hilton, free Green Cola and Sparkle Art face-painting.

Granny Mo’s blankets find a home in India

Whilst on his latest trip to India for the National Immunisation Day (NID) part of Rotary’s campaign to End Polio throughout the world, Rotarian Paul Hickson was able to carry out another task working with the Born Too Soon charity. This is the story in his own words. “Gurgaon is a fast-growing city 20 miles to the South West of Delhi with over 800,000 people, most of whom seemed to be on the same road as us on the day we arrived. Its suburbs epitomise the assault on the senses that India will always deliver whenever and wherever you go and it was here that I was able to fulfil a small but ultimately immensely rewarding task. Maureen Hawkings, known fondly as “Granny Mo”, has been making blankets for the charity Born Too Soon since 2000 and was always determined to make 1,000 blankets. Last year, having achieved that milestone, she was nominated for the ‘Unsung Hero’ award for her crocheting efforts. When she heard that I was going out to India for the National Immunisation Day (NID) she asked if it would be possible for me to take out some blankets for the newly born babies I might meet. To be honest, I was unsure whether I would get the opportunity to fulfill her wishes, given that we are not always in control of where or to whom we administer the polio drops. Imagine my pleasure, therefore, when, on arriving in Gurgaon our first stop was a hospital where an immunisation desk had been set up in the foyer. Initially surrounded by empty chairs, we watched as all the newly born babies from the previous evening were brought down by their mothers and fathers to receive their vaccination drops. (Whilst in the UK we wait

a few weeks but in India they never miss an opportunity to immunise). The mothers brought their babies down in an assortment of blankets but one particular mother stood out as struggling to hold her baby in what looked like, well, a white rag if I am being frank. Bemused by a number of Europeans standing around in high vis NID jackets my first attempt to offer the blanket wasn’t accepted but after some sign language and a realisation that no payment was required the blanket was gratefully accepted. Tom, my son, captured on camera the moment when the baby looked up and I had been able to deliver on Granny Mo’s wish. The mother was able to cuddle her baby in a warm blanket feeling equal to those around her. During your Rotary life you experience many Rotary moments which will forever stay with you. Thanks to Granny Mo I have experienced one of those moments and a newly born baby in a far off city in India has benefitted from the skill, time and patience of an extraordinary woman. “ kingstonrotaryclub.org.uk

and Kingston artists are beginning to plan their annual Open Studios Every June for the past eight years, KAOS – Kingston Artists Open Studios – have opened their houses, studios, pavilions and conservatories to show their work and celebrate ART in Kingston with anyone and everyone. Over 100 painters, printmakers, photographers, sculptors, ceramicists, textile artists and glass artists, together with the winners and runners up of Young KAOS 2018, will show their work in and around Kingston. Catalogues, leaflets, maps and posters will be appearing from the middle of May across the borough, listing all the venues, which artists are where, and the opening times. We are crossing our fingers for good weather, although perhaps not quite as hot as last year. But KAOS don’t just do Open Studios. In May last year we held our first ‘Visually Literate’ show where we linked up with the Creative Writing group at Kingston Adult Education College in Surbiton. Twenty-six Kingston artists produced artworks – paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, video, ceramics – and the creative writers were invited to let their imagination take wing and interpret these works in verse. The writings and images were then shown side by side in central London. It was fascinating and even quite startling to read what and how our works were viewed and interpreted. In January this year, despite having very short notice of a great gallery space available, we staged ‘Visually Literate 2’ in South East London. Everyone pulled together and almost 60 artists and writers created a wonderful and very successful exhibition. Our ‘Raining Cats and Dogs’ postcards exhibition, with all proceeds going to the Momentum charity, was also very well received last year and these postcards are

now a permanent fixture for sale at Jax Caffé in Old London Road. The stand is frequently replenished with new cats and dogs. Kingston Open Studios will be held on the weekends of 9/10 and 16/17 of June 2018, so, come and see what Kingston’s artists are up to, everyone is welcome. Artist registrations closed at the end of February, but if you hurry and visit our website you might just manage to squeeze in and be part of the show. Spring 2018 It seems that Spring is finally coming! Leaves are unfurling and insects are waking up and you can start to enjoy the warmth of the sun on your back- but beware the night time frosts! Now is the time to start preparing the garden for a glorious summer. Encouraging Beneficial Insects Whilst enjoying your garden we can also encourage insects that are beneficial predators and pollinators. This will mean that nature will give you a helping hand to grow robust and healthy plants which in turn produce more flowers. Many pollinators emerge when the weather warms up, but pollen and nectar can be hard to come by. A huge number of plants rely entirely on bees and other insects for pollination, and yet population numbers are declining. But you can help them with your garden! Many insect species have been hibernating since autumn, and when they come out they need food for energy. Hoverflies, butterflies and hibernating bees such as bumblebees and solitary bees will come out at the first sign of warmer weather – this can be any time from February to April. Other insects such as Ladybirds (these will eat aphids), beetles (these will eat slugs) and wasps (these will devour hundreds of grubs and flies in the course of a summer) will also start to appear. To provide food for these predators you need to make sure the garden has plants that flower from early spring to late autumn but avoid plants with double or multi-petalled flowers. Such flowers may lack nectar and pollen, or insects may have difficulty in gaining access. Early Flowering plants for Bees Some early spring flowering plants which not only give food for the insects but also provide flowers for you to enjoy are: Crocus, these are often the first flowers to appear in spring, and bees love them. Snowdrops are great for planting in shady spots under shrubs and trees and provide a vital food resources 12

for flies and other pollinating insects. These can be planted in their dormant bulb form in autumn, or you can buy them now ‘in the green’ which gives them a better chance of establishing for the following year. Lungwort (Pulmonaria) are great early flowering ground coverers with borage- like, grey spotted leaves and flowers which can be white, blue or pink appearing on short stems. Flowering Current (Ribes) is a bushy shrub with deep pink flowers in early spring that are perfect for pollinating bees. Heather (Erica Carnea) is a winter-flowering heather covered in tiny flowers that are packed full of pollen. A perfect plant for the front of borders or by paths and gates. Oregon Grape (Mahonia) is an evergreen shrub which produces golden yellow flower spikes and glossy green foliage. Forsythia, the most floriferous early spring flowering shrub with rich yellow flowers is again a great shrub that thrives in any soil conditions. The Ancient Market Place

Kingston’s market place was refurbished a few years, and so in some senses it can now be called “modern”. Yet it has plenty of history, even if the title “ancient” may be stretching it a little! “Ancient” implies something prehistoric or Roman, and yet, as is well-known, Kingston is a Saxon town, dating back to at least 838AD when Egbert, king of Wessex, summoned a council of nobles and bishops to Kingston to discuss the problem with the Danes. The market place itself dates back to the reign of Henry II, and was probably established in the 1170s. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists fifty markets in England, and more than two thousand more were established between then and around 1350. Market towns often grew up close to castles or monasteries, and it is often wondered if the name “Castle Street” indicates the site of a previous castle here in Kingston. There is some evidence that there was, and that this castle was captured by Henry III in 1264, when fighting against the barons. From a very early period kings in England, as in Europe, realised that a successful market town attracted people and generated revenue. Kingston appears to have flourished, and often kings and queens gave the town extra market days which of course benefited the economy of the town. One such was Mary Tudor who rewarded the loyal citizens of Kingston after they had done their best to delay Thomas Wyatt and his rebels by cutting down the bridge in 1554. The king who most helped the town’s market was Charles I who effectively gave

it a monopoly by forbidding any other town within a seven mile radius from holding a market – a law still in force today. During the Middle Ages the market place was the setting for minor punishments with the stocks and pillories, where angry citizens might pelt offenders with rotten tomatoes and the like! There was a Tudor Town Hall on the site of the current Market House, where the statue of Queen Anne was placed in 1706 – at a cost of £47 18s and 6d! A new Town Hall was built in 1838, exactly one thousand years after Egbert’s Council, and remained such for nearly one hundred years, until the building of the Guildhall. I shall write more about the Market Place in another issue later this year, but, if you are interested in learning more about the fascinating history of our town, why not join one of our tours, led by specially trained volunteers? Cleaning Your Cooker Hood

The hood in your kitchen can be one of those places you always seem to forget about. Maintenance is a real issue as it’s not something you tend to prepare food on or look at very often. However, this can lead to a nasty, greasy build up or clogged filters, which will stop it from working 100%. If you’re looking to finally get it back to its shiny, grease-free state, you’ll need to put in some time and effort. It can be a very sticky, unpleasant mess to get sorted, but isn’t impossible. If you have the time, what you need to do is equip yourself with a soft sponge or cloth, a non-abrasive scrubbing brush or even toothbrush to avoid scratching and leaving marks; some washing up liquid and some baking soda & vinegar (optional). Make sure your appliance is switched off and cooled down before starting. Remove the filter any any other removable fixtures (you may need to refer to the manual if these need to be detached in a certain way. Remove the filter - this may be a paper or carbon filter in flat extractors that can be replaced with a fresh filter, or else it will be a metal filter that may require soaking in soapy water for several hours, or ideally overnight (cut through grease by using a little vinegar as well). Following this, you should use your soft brush or sponge and some soapy water to scrub away any build up on the surface of the hood. For stubborn dirt and grime, you can create a baking soda paste by mixing with a little water and let it sit on those areas for a few hours, however you should test on a small area in case of discolouring. To avoid deep cleaning in future, try to wipe

down the hood regularly with a cloth and gentle cleaning spray or soapy water after using the oven. `if you’d like some help in getting your hood clean or the job is more severe, why not contact professionals like Albrite (advert below).

The shoulders are a hotspot for tension and stress for many of us. Luckily, they respond really well to simple movement.

shoulders move away from your ears and you feel a stretch across the top of your shoulders. Hold for five long, soft breaths. Inhaling, let the shoulders rise a little, and exhaling let the shoulders drop away from the ears. Using our breath like this helps to release tension more effectively.

The Sanskrit name Garudasana is translated as eagle pose, although it actually refers to the Garuda, a mythical man-bird that can fly forever on the wind and never tire. The pose is excellent for reviving sore shoulders. Warm up by breathing in and out through your nose, making each inhale and exhale as long and smooth as you can. Try to keep the inhale and exhale the same length. When you are ready, slowly squeeze your shoulders to your ears as you inhale, and keep squeezing until you have finished your breath. On the exhale, slowly drop the shoulders away from the ears, and then squeeze the shoulder blades together. Do this for five breaths. Then, make circles with your shoulders, rolling them forwards and then up to your ears as you inhale, then back and down as you exhale, again using the muscles between your shoulder blades. Do this for five breaths. Repeat in the opposite direction for five breaths, inhaling as you squeeze shoulder blades together then roll shoulders up to the ears, and then forwards and down as you exhale, feeling a stretch across between the shoulder blades on the exhale. Now for eagle pose. Reach your hands straight out in front of you, level with your shoulders. Cross the right arm on top of the left, so the right elbow sits on top of the left elbow. Bring your hands to your face and if it’s possible, bring the back of the hands together. If that’s easy, maybe the wrists can cross to bring palms together. Spread the shoulder blades to feel a stretch across the top of the back. Then draw the elbows down into your chest so your

Q: I want to divorce but I’m so worried about how it will affect my children. My daughter is 7 and adores her father, my son is 5 and slightly autistic. I know they will both be dreadfully upset, should I wait until they are a bit older? - Chrissie, Kingston A: Your children will be upset, but that’s not a reason to delay if you need to separate. Looking at the bigger picture, you are role models for your children, is your relationship what you would want for either of them in the future? Children are resilient and will soon get over their initial upset and adapt to their new circumstances. That said, you will need to

take especial care with your son, who will find the changes more difficult. So if you are able to stay in the same home, and keep him at the same school, that will definitely help, and shared custody is unlikely to be a good option for him. Younger children usually cope better than older teenagers who can take their parents’ divorce badly as it’s the time they’re embarking on relationships of their own; they can also think their whole childhoods have been based on a lie and become quite unsettled. What damages children is not separation or divorce, but conflict between their parents. If they are living in a war zone you need to end that quickly, and to ensure that you don’t argue with your ex in front of them, or let them hear you speak badly of him.

My biggest piece of advice is to listen, listen, listen to your children. That’s hard, because you won’t want to hear their pain, but their worries won’t be the same as yours and it’s important they feel heard and included, as well as reassured. Make sure you tell their schools what’s happening as children don’t get depressed or anxious like adults do, but their feelings come out more in their behaviour. Most children will benefit from being able to talk to someone outside the family, maybe with some play therapy or counselling at school.

Use the day as an excuse to spread some love. If you are fortunate to get the time to visit your Mum this year for her big day, don’t squander it, show her how grateful you are to have her in your life and thank her for all she’s done for you over the years. Remind her that her support has moulded you into the person you are today and that even if as a child you didn’t appreciate her life lessons and tellings off, she’s actually a fantastic parent and role model to you.

Not to sound too cheesy, but I’m very fortunate to have a best friend in her as well as a Mum and we always get on, despite the fact that I don’t get to see her as often as I’d like to. If I had my way I’d spend 100s of 1000s of pounds giving her the best day ever and reminding her how special she is. However, knowing how much she hates me spending too much, and having difficulties when it comes to saving up anyway, I try to find more affordable, yet thought-out methods when it comes to gift giving. This could just be a mass of her favourite snacks and some comfy pyjamas, or it could be baking her a coffee and walnut cake (her favourite), sketching her favourite celebrity, even just making her favourite dinner or going out for a meal. It helps to know what she likes and to give her

something she wouldn’t just up and go do for herself, I also try my best to always be around for days like this, as I don’t take them lightly, but understandably that may not always be plausible for everyone. However you celebrate (there’s no right or wrong way!) I hope Mother’s Day 2018 is a very happy one for everyone.

Mortgages for selfemployed-sole traders, partnerships, Ltd Companies & Contractors There is a myth that if you are self-employed it is more difficult to obtain mortgages, this is not necessarily true, it may be simpler to calculate potential borrowing for an employed applicant but that does not mean it is more difficult to agree a mortgage. Lenders assess self-employed applicants differently, some work from profit, some dividends, some take average 2 years figures, some work from latest. This varies from bank to bank, so one bank saying ‘no’ doesn’t mean the next bank won’t say ‘yes’. The advantage of using an independent whole of market broker is we can find the bank that will assess income correctly to get you the most suitable mortgage, at the best possible rate and then present the application correctly to the lender. How many years accounts/ tax returns are required? Most banks require at least 2 years accounts or submitted tax returns. We do have some lenders that potentially will work off just one year’s figures, but these would need to be a strong set of accounts, normally backed up with some additional management info or a supporting letter from an accountant. Will banks work off projected income? It is rare for a bank to use a projected figure rather than a final figure, however a projection from the company accountant can help to get a mortgage over the line, especially if there are circumstances such as a dip or sharp increase in profit. An explanation can help to show the business is moving in the right direction or likely to sustain the increased profit.

The Canbury Arms – Kingston We found this hidden treasure on the corner of Canbury Park Road and Elm Road. It has a lovely ambiance - clean, fresh and welcoming, with beautiful photographs taken by the local photographic club who meet there. There are three patio gardens and a large conservatory, cleverly and tastefully adaptable to whatever size required, whether for drinking, eating, meetings or parties. It is also child and dog friendly. We had terrific food, prepared by awardwinning head chef, Michael Mannion. A frequently changing, fantastic repertoire of original and seasonal dishes; from classic pub-style to speciality food. The warm bean salad, Morecombe bay shrimp, Cornish flaked crab butter and artichoke with truffle oil soup were exceptional. My 8oz steak was cooked to perfection, as was the fish of the day and the pan fried Atlantic swordfish with violet potatoes & salad. There is a huge selection of gins, spirits, real ales, craft beers - bottled and draft. Thanks very much to the friendly helpful staff who looked after us. The pub supports the community, with local
