OmniLocal - Kingston Upon Thames • November 2016
Hello everyone! The nights are really drawing in, with the summer now looking a long way behind us. This summer was packed with activities, including local, national and even international events. We had a little lull in events, until Halloween and the Kingston Rotary Club fireworks night. As I write this, it’s just over a week away, but I am sure they will have done a great job!
Contents: Local Business Focus Matt Ward - You Creative Rebel
The winter is coming, but there is no reason to be sitting still! There are so many events happening around Kingston. Christmas Choirs, Concerts, The Craft Fair and lots of shops packed with treats for the Christmas festivities! I love the Christmas period. It is a time for family, love and peace to all good men (and women).

This month, we have 2 new advertisers- Panels Plus on page 30 and Synergy Worldwide on page 18! You may have also seen a new section, which is thanks to the Rotary Club. Please help us make their adverts count by giving them a call and let them know you have seen their advert in Omni Local. Also, if you run your own business, you might like to know about our networking events. We are up to 15 groups, which spread across Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire, East Sussex and London. Nothing we have achieved has been easy, but it’s thanks to a great team of people, and your support. Thank you so much for keeping us alive! On a personal level, we have just got a puppy at home and all the families and neighbours kids love him. We have had more visitors in one week than we have had all year! It almost feels like Christmas... I just hope the sleepless nights of him screaming for attention start to subside and he feels at home by the time you read this! Our next issue is all about Christmas….We have no shame about this! It’s a wonderful time of the year, and a time not to forget others in the community. We will be talking about the work that the Rotary do and how you can help everyone in the community at Christmas. In the meantime, please stay safe! Kind regards John – Omni Local OmniLocal Ltd. LOCAL BUSINESS
This month I am talking to dedicated entrepreneur, Matt Ward, founder of You Creative Rebel.
Supplied by: Matt Ward - You Creative Rebel
Q1: Hi Matt, could you please tell our readers a little bit about You Creative Rebel? A1: You Creative Rebel is about getting back in touch with the things that make us who we are - so often we conform to what’s around us and don’t even realise it. Then we wake up and can feel lost to ourselves. You Creative Rebel is reigniting our creativity to help us build confidence, be ambitious and achieve their goals. Q2. How long have you been in this line of business now? A2: About a year now. I started out as an illustrator but went off course when life’s demands got in the way. I became that conforming person - never questioning what I was doing or whether it was making me happy? I had stopped asking questions, challenging myself and my surroundings - and that is what creativity is all about... asking endless questions, never assuming anything and allowing ourselves to embrace our own thoughts, feelings and emotions. Through NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) I have turned my mind inside out and haven’t looked back - I want to do the same for others. Q3. So what do you enjoy most about working in this type of industry?
A6: Lack of confidence in their own ability to succeed - which is no wonder, because that’s what happens when we stop listening to our true creative selves! Through my simple tools & techniques, clients regain confidence which springboards them into the right direction. Q7: Do you have any special offers/ promotions on at the moment? A7: Until November 30th, 1 to 1 creative sessions are only £40 per hour – a saving of £30! I also always offer a sliding scale rate for those on out of work or disability benefits.
A3: Watching people grow and make life choices that are meaningful to them. Q4. What kind of service does YCR have to offer? A4: YCR offers creative 1 to 1 sessions or group workshops. Both are tailored for the individual or business. Sessions are interactive & fun and for me, that is what it’s all about.
Q8: Excellent. Do you have any advice for those looking to get into a similar line of work? A8: Keep things fresh - if it starts feeling mechanical, then it is!
Q5. What is your usual clientele?
Q9: Great! So what is the best way for the readers to get in touch with you?
A5: I’ve covered a varied amount of clients from all ages and from all different types of backgrounds. Some are based in the UK and some even in the US.
A9: By email: info@youcreativerebel.co.uk or alternatively, you can always catch me on 07985 459832. To find out more about You Creative Rebel, please visit www.youcreativerebel.co.uk and for my latest blogs, please check out http://www.youcreativerebel.co.uk/blog/
Q6 What is the most common request/ problem received in your line of work?

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY

Relieve Tension Around the House Sometimes things eat away at us until we start lashing out, and family members can get caught in the crosshairs. Whether its you who is feeling overwhelmed, or your family members are feeling uncertain and uneasy, it isn’t healthy for you or your loved ones. This time of year, with the additional drain on money over the holidays and staying in a lot more, you may find yourself taking it out on members of the family, adding to their stress, and building up on your own. Why not lighten the load and practice new ways to ease the stress at home? For example, you could try meditation, keep yourself busy by finding a hobby, or if that doesn’t work – speak to a professional. Getting an expert involved when it comes to lowering your anxieties and increasing positive thinking, can help you to open up. An unbiased outlet offered by an experienced professional can show you how to avoid keeping things locked away and really think about what it is you want from life, as well as finding out what makes you feel good, or more fulfilled. Experts in mental wellbeing can help you to find balance in your life and move past the little things that weigh you
down. Healing and Palm Reading can also benefit you both now and in future, helping you to focus on the important things in life. If your environment is beginning to feel more hostile, why not encourage your family to share their problems or set goals, either with you, or with a therapist/healer? Sometimes all it takes is someone to talk to, and someone to understand your problems and your ambitions. This Page is Sponsored By Ravinder Kaur Kleir:
ENERGY HEALER RAVINDER KAUR KLEIR (07733 826 451) Rav is an empathic, approachable, down-to-earth Londoner who has been doing healing and providing readings for over 10 years. Naturally intuitive, she is able to instantly connect to the energies concerned, and gain a profound understanding of the ‘bigger picture’. This allows her to receive the exact course of action for the client to achieve their goals, and lead a happier and more fulfilling life. The readings are purposefully thorough and informative to ensure that the client is given clarity, healing and guidance to overcome any challenges, and empower them to move forward. This enables the client to release and subsequently heal, not only the ‘here and now’ but also the root cause of the challenges they are confronted with. Rav is passionate about her work and has definitely found her forte in life. She is honest and direct, and determined to offer the best service possible, giving a unique and powerful understanding to any queries. She invites consultations on any area of life, e.g. health, relationships, career, past traumas etc., whether they are of a physical, mental, emotional or spiritual nature.

Councillor Rowena Bass:
Supplied by: Councillor Rowena Bass
Deputy Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames 2016/7 Rowena is currently the Deputy Mayor of Kingston and was elected as a Conservative Councillor for Coombe Hill ward in May 2014. She has lived in Kingston for over twenty years with her husband Alasdair and three grown up daughters. Rowena was brought up in Purley, educated at The Old Palace of John Whitgift School, Croydon and then read Maths at Exeter University. By coincidence the current Mayor Geoff Austin also went to school in Croydon at Whitgift, the linked boys’ school! Rowena qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG in London and has extensive experience of both the private and public sectors. Being a Councillor is a varied and challenging role which involves primarily representing the needs of local residents, both directly and through serving on various council committees. Councillors are also expected to campaign on local issues & elections and be active in the community – Rowena is as director of Kingston Chamber of Commerce and a governor of Robin Hood Primary School. It is fun and rewarding to help make a difference in your community. If being a Councillor appeals to you then do look up www.beacouncillor.co.uk. As Deputy Mayor, Rowena stands in for the Mayor at various events, visiting and speaking at a wide range of events across the borough. Highlights so far include opening the Kingston Business Expo and meeting people from the many charity and volunteer groups in Kingston. It is humbling to meet so many people who give up their time for free to help others all contributing to the very special community nature of Kingston. Every year the Mayor chooses a Charity to

support and this year it is Momentum – an independent local charity which supports children with cancer and life-limiting conditions and their families. One of Momentum’s main aims is to improve the healing environment in local hospitals, as being admitted to hospital is very traumatic for children and their families. You can help the Mayor raise funds for Momentum either by direct donation to the Mayor’s Charitable Trust or by supporting one of the fundraising events below – all very welcome! 16 November – Wine & cheese tasting at the Lovekyn Chapel 26 November – Mayor’s Christmas Bazaar at the Guildhall 22 January – fundraising concert at the Rose Theatre 5 May – Charity Ball on Raven’s Ait Island For further details contact the Mayor’s Office: Address: Guildhall, High Street, Kingston upon Thames, KT1 1EU Tel: 020 8547 5027 Email: mayors.office@ kingston.gov.uk Web: www.kingston.gov.uk/mayor Facebook: MayorofKingstonuponThames

POLICE ADVICE
Help us stop Courier Scams
Supplied by: Alison McWinnie - MET Police
Our elderly residents are losing an extensive amount of money.
Prevention Advice:
Method: You receive unsolicited telephone calls from fraudsters purporting to be from police or your bank, stating their systems have spotted a fraudulent payment on your card/your card is due to expire and needs to be replaced. You may be asked to provide your full bank card details and key in your PIN so that your existing card can be “cancelled” and the new one “activated”/ “authorised.” The fraudster will then explain that the bank needs to collect the card and will attend the person’s address or send an innocent courier company driver to do so, sometimes providing a fake “replacement” card.
If you receive such a call end it immediately and hang up the phone and wait at least 5 minutes before making any calls to ensure the line is clear. DO NOT hand over money or items purchased as a result of this type of phone call. Fact: Your bank will never attend your home, collect your bank card or ask for your PIN. Crime Prevention Talk
The fraudster has obtained the person’s name, address, bank details, the card itself and the PIN. The cards are then used fraudulently without the victim’s knowledge. Variations:

The scammer requests you to assist a police investigation by asking you to go to your bank, withdraw a large sum of cash and take this home.

You may be told there is a corrupt member of staff within your bank and the police need your help to identify them by withdrawing a large sum of your money so that the money can be marked by and placed back into the banking system. They say this will help them identify the corrupt person. You may be told not to speak to the bank about the investigation when you withdraw your cash as this may alert the criminal. You will then be asked to hand this to a courier or taxi driver.

Start a New Chapter with Beanstalk Children’s Literacy Charity
LOCAL CHARITY
THIS MONTH’S CHARITY Supplied by: Kate Loynes - Beanstalk
Beanstalk volunteers come from all age groups and differing backgrounds, but they all share a passion for books and are united in a common aim – to reduce the number of children leaving primary school without the sufficient level of literacy that enables them to fully access the secondary curriculum. Over 60,000 children leave primary school every year without reaching their expected reading level. Statistics show that 1 in 6 adults in the UK has a reading level below that of an 11 year old. We want to ensure that every child has the chance to reach their full potential, helping them succeed in life. For over 40 years Beanstalk (formerly known as Volunteer Reading Help) has helped primary schools by recruiting, vetting, training and supporting volunteers to work with each of 3 children selected by the school, struggling to read. By tailoring the twice weekly 30-minute sessions to each individual’s needs, they can give much needed attention to build confidence and help them catch up in a pressure-free environment at their own pace. Schools who use Beanstalk helpers refer to them as their “secret weapon”, citing improvements in reading levels and transformations in attitude to learning, confidence and enjoyment in reading. Our reading helpers enthuse about the children they work with, often overwhelmed by the difference they can see in a short space of time.
Another volunteer wrote to us at the end of her first year: “One of my children has changed so much over this last 18 months. A self-conscious quiet child, overwhelmed by the learning process has blossomed into a confident chatty person, willing to decipher any word and keen to grab a dictionary or book to illustrate a point. This morning I was aware for the first time of the adult she would become. She now has enough tools to get the very best from her education and hopefully make herself and her family proud. I am often overwhelmed by the energy these children give to learning. It’s a joy to be a part of.” In order to reach more children, we need to recruit more people who are just as passionate about passing on a legacy of literacy as the volunteers quoted above. There are a great many schools in Kingston and surrounding Boroughs with children waiting to read with an interested adult and we would love for one of them to be you.
One of our volunteers said, “I have found it very rewarding to see how the children’s confidence grows once they realise they are not being set up to ‘fail’. Now, other children in their classes ask me if they can come too, because they hear I “play games and do puzzles”! I am given many resources by Beanstalk (games and books) and I go to the Library when a particular interest is expressed. Recently, following a class project on Ancient Egypt, we ‘wrote’ messages in hieroglyphics! I’ve found lots of free downloads to print out for (literacy) games and the half hour with each child whizzes by. Sometimes they just want to chat, every session is different and I love it!”

LOVE KINGSTON
Remember, remember…
Supplied by: Sorrel Parsons - Love Kingston
No, not the 5th but the 29th of November! #GivingTuesday is a special day to do good stuff for charity, straight after the shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Started in the United States, Giving Tuesday launched in the UK two years ago, raising £6,000 every 6 minutes for charitable causes last year and breaking the world record for the most money donated online in 24 hours. It’s a simple idea. Whether you come together with your family, your community, your company or your organisation, find a way to give back and then share what you’re doing. Here are some simple ways to make Giving Tuesday a success in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames… It’s not Tuesday but Friday I’m in love! We fell in love with Fat Face in Bentall Centre last year, who partnered with Love Kingston for their ‘Thanks for Giving’ initiative, donating 10% of net profits from Black Friday through to Cyber Monday in place of discounts. Together we raised nearly £1,000 for our local causes. Customers told us that they had deliberately come into the store to buy Christmas gifts in support of our campaign. Could your company offer a percentage of sales on Black Friday or Giving Tuesday? The Great Good-Off for Kingston
The simplest way to give is to donate online www.love-kingston-org.uk where you can also find out more about what we do and other ways to get involved. Of course it would be amazing if you can raise funds for us this November but there are many ways you can help your local community. Put together a package of non-perishable food for your local Foodbank, consider volunteering your time and talents to a local cause or donate warm clothes and hygiene products to your local homelessness shelters. Tell us how you will be the spark for social good on social media using the hash tags #GivingTuesday and #LoveKingston or email sorrel.parsons@londoncf.org.uk today.
Challenge someone to a ‘good-off’. You know that business across the road, why don’t you challenge them to a #GivingTuesday competition to see who can raise the most money on one single day? Neighbourly Nosh Love Kingston is currently funding small community projects who are helping isolated residents to connect to people and place. Why not invite your neighbours round for a cosy fundraising supper? Give a gift online

Kingston Mental Health Carers
MENTAL HEALTH Supplied by: Alan Moss - KMHCF
Founded in 2001 and run by carers, KMHC Forum fully understands that being a carer can be a demanding and isolating experience, and that obtaining information and support can be complicated and confusing. We can direct carers to the various services that are available for information, support and training. The Forum gives the opportunity for Carers to collectively express their views and opinions directly to the Health Service Providers, for the improvement of facilities for both Carers and Service Users. The Forum is consulted by Commissioners and Health & Social Care Providers to develop a clear understanding of the specific needs of Carers within our local community, to the ultimate benefit, care and wellbeing of both the Carer and the Cared-for. The Forum achieves its aims by having a strong working partnership with the relevant professionals and voluntary organisations in the mental health field. A sound membership base enables us to be truly representative of Carers in the borough. By joining the Forum, your input would be greatly valued, and could make a real difference to local services. The Forum is a charitable organisation, and membership is free. There are no obligations on you - you participate as much or as little as you are able, and membership is strictly confidential. The Forum seeks to address your needs and concerns, and is pleased to hear from you at any time. We will periodically send you relevant and up-dated information about services and events that may interest you. Management Committee members attend strategic service planning and monitoring meetings, both locally and across SW London, campaigning on your behalf. LOCAL HISTORY
Gunpowder, Treason and Plot Probably the biggest and most well known historical event this time of year, Guy Fawkes Night is the most recalled event to come around during the ninth month. Also known as Bonfire Night, the national celebrations are generally celebrated on 5th November (remember, remember!), although you’ll probably already have seen and heard the faint explosions of fireworks from as early as late October. So why is this tradition so commonly celebrated to this day? Well the story entails of the famous Gunpowder Plot set for Saturday 5th November 1605. Guy Fawkes was a member of a group of Catholic Englishmen, also referred to as Guido Fawkes, which he attained during his years fighting alongside the Spanish, though he was actually born in York. His plot consisted of planting an array of explosives right beneath the House of Lords in London, with the intent of blowing up parliament and King James I. His motive was to create a rebellion of English Catholics to fight back against the newly introduced penal laws, which were against their religion. Unfortunately for those involved in the Gunpowder Plot, their plan was soon foiled when a mysterious letter of warning was delivered to William Parker on 26th October 1605. William was 4th Baron Monteagle and took it upon himself to warn others of their plan, which lead to a search throughout the House of Lords on 4th November, where they discovered Guy Fawkes guarding around 36 gunpowder kegs. Guy Fawkes was quickly arrested and sentenced to hang, along with 8 other people who made a stand against authorities during the unveiling. Other co-conspirators fled upon this discovery. Following the event, Anti-Catholic legislation was introduced, though many devoted

Catholics actually retained high office throughout the reign of King James I. Even nowadays the foiled plot is remembered and commemorated with effigies, the lighting of bonfires and special events. Ever since, it has been known simply as “Bonfire Night” or “Firework Night” throughout the UK, but the stories are still told to this day. The tradition isn’t celebrated in Northern Ireland, however. In the New England States, the day was also known as “Pope Day” until the 18th Century, when the tradition was established by American settlers and British Colonies. There are many terms and traditions built around what happened, even being celebrated in countries like New Zealand and Canada. If you would like to explore some local history and hear about the stories behind Kingston upon Thames and beyond, why not attend a walking tour with the Kingston Tour Guides? They lead informative walks from Kingston Market Place every Sunday from 11:00am for just £5 per adult, or you can arrange a special group tour. Find out more at www.KingstonTourGuides.org.uk.

ARTS
Kingston Artists Open Studios
Supplied by: Caroline Calascione - KAOS
In the pantheon of art history the story of the self-portrait is a long and illustrious one. Rembrandt, Freud, Hockney, Warhol and now KAOS – Kingston Artists’ Open Studios. In Autumn 2015 KAOS artists took the idea of the ‘selfie’ and made it their own: instead of a mobile phone at the end of a stick they took to their brushes and pencils and canvas and silks and satins, buttons and bows and anything else they needed, to ‘capture’ the essence of their selves. They all found it an absorbing exercise and the exhibition at Cass Art in Kingston was a great success. This year they are taking the initial 2015 selfies, and reworking them for a show at The Stables Gallery, Orleans House, Twickenham. While last year’s show had a slight ‘tongue in cheek’ aspect to it, Kingston artists were fascinated to find that, even in a spirit of fun, in creating their selfie they gained a deeper understanding of themselves and how they worked, how the method of creating their selfie
15
reflected who they were. But it is not wholly an exercise in navel gazing, this exhibition once again gives free rein to KAOS artists to explore and experiment, have fun (maybe even create a fantasy selfie, the ‘self’ one would like to be). The works are very personal, the artists have created ‘portraits’ of themselves, the selfie, which sometimes only they understand: surprising, thoughtful, and occasionally provocative, funny and sad, all, well nearly all, human life is here, on show at the Stables Gallery, Orleans House 6th October to 4th December. For more information and upcoming KAOS exhibitions, visit www. kingstonartistsopenstudios.co.uk.

November Gardening Tips

With the cold weather making our time Janet Bacon in the garden less inviting, we still have some highlights to brighten our days, such as a winter flowering shrubs, berries, coloured stems and the planting of tulips for a colourful spring display. Plants for winter colour Plan to put your most colourful plants in positions that you can see from indoors, so there is no need to go out into the garden to enjoy these winter beauties. Scent is still possible and plants with fragrance are best appreciated when planted by doorways in regular use. Natural Cleaning Tips
HOME Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
There are plenty of ways to keep your home clean, shining and stain-free, without overstocking your cupboards with name brand cleaners and harsh chemicals. Many standard items around the house and common kitchen staples can help do the job without the hassle. For example: Stain Removal and Scrubbing Lemon juice can make a huge difference in good housekeeping, and it is one of the most natural and low-cost methods of cleaning. Whether you dilute the juice first or use neat, the juices can help to lift curry stains, remove drink spills from carpets or when combined with baking soda can be an easy way to clean your oven. Sometimes even blotting with some fizzy water can aid stain removal in clothes and carpets, just don’t rub it in too hard, keep a dabbing motion.
the area in circular motions to improve its appearance. If however, you’re beginning to notice any marks or fingerprints on the walls, remove them with some slightly damp, stale white bread. Notice the improvements it will make, and without any damage to wallpaper or paintwork.
Polishing and Streak-free Solutions If you have any chrome taps that are looking a little worse for wear and need a little more shine, try rubbing white flour into them, rinse and wipe down with a cloth. For a stainless steel sink or fixture, you should try rubbing in some baking powder.
Bathroom Cleaner
Another kitchen item many swear by is white vinegar. Once diluted, this can be used for a streak-free window clean or can be used to clean any wooden furniture or flooring. Simply wash the area, leave to dry and then apply a furniture polish. The vinegar works as a powerful disinfectant and removes difficult stains, not to mention, it can be used as an effective showerhead unblocker when left to soak. Marks and scuffs If you’re starting to notice marks on any wooden furniture, worktops or your mantelpiece, try cutting a brazil nut in half and rubbing the area (make sure that the surface is clean and dry before you try this). Some even swear by mayonnaise in the case of visible watermarks. Simply apply some mayo to a cloth or soft toothbrush and wipe

A surprising (and somewhat disturbing) fact is that a can of coke can make a great cleaner for your toilet bowl. All you need to do is pour it in the toilet and leave for 1 hour – then flush away. Some also swear by white wine as a method of cleaning the glass on shower doors, as it works as a surprisingly good limescale remover. With cleaning methods as easy as this, why not treat yourself to a glass of wine while things are left to soak?

If “sitting is the new smoking” what can we do if our work requires it and the sofa beckons during long winter evenings?
HEALTH & FITNESS Supplied by: Claire Dyson - Untangle Your Life
Dr. James Levine coined this phrase having spent 30 years studying the harmful effects of too much sitting. Articles in The Lancet in 2012 and this year show physical inactivity is a risk factor for heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. Whilst researchers are still trying to pinpoint why sitting is so risky, their studies show getting out of our seats now could save us the pain and enfeebling effects of these diseases (and, I guess, keep us out of a wheelchair) later. Working standing up isn’t enough (University of Exeter study, 2015), we need movement. Exercise also reduces the risk of stroke, a major cause of vascular dementia. We all know of someone who died suddenly and too soon and the devastating effect on their family. If working activity into the day could save you and your family the trauma of your suffering and premature death isn’t it worth a try? Here are some ideas to get you started: Stairs are your friend. Yes, we know we “should” shun the escalator or lift. Did you know that poor circulation as a result of diabetes 2 means you could lose a leg or a foot? No, nor did I.
in the office, buddy up with co-workers and book a meeting room. Talk rather than email. Perhaps call to check now is a good time, then go talk to a colleague rather than emailing back and forth. The job gets done quicker and you get to know each other better. Walking meetings. Something to consider when you and a small group are trying to solve a problem or do something innovative. A change of scenery, of perspective could produce a change in thinking. Take the long way home. We tend to take the shortest route anywhere. Try walking 5 – 10 minutes to get back to your house or desk after lunch, an errand or a meeting. For more advice or to get in touch, visit www.untangle-your-life.co.uk.
Park further away. In any car park, pick a space as far away from the shop or office as you can manage or walk a few times around the building before going in. No equipment workouts. www. nhs.uk/Livewell/loseweight/Pages/ Tenminuteworkouts.aspx. Invite family or friends to join you to make it social and if you feel self-conscious doing this on your own 20

SPECIAL FEATURE
Enjoying the Winter Season
Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local your own tinsel - all you really need is a good rummage and some youtube videos/how-to articles these days, so what’s stopping you? You can even start work on your own homemade gifts! Just because their present isn’t an iPad or the pair of shoes they’ve been eyeing for months now, it doesn’t mean they won’t notice the effort that has gone in. We all know how hard Christmas can be on caregivers and especially members of a big family or group of friends.
Making the most out of the cold months isn’t always easy for a lot of people. Some might say, “What is there to do when its this cold outside?” or “There’s not enough daylight this time of year.” This may be partially true, but it doesn’t mean you have to limit your fun weekends and groan your way into the new year - there is so much you can do with the next few months Planning for the holidays Don’t hate us for pointing it out, but Christmas is in one month, which means its time to get planning. Now, just because your bank balance may take a bit of a hit, it doesn’t mean this can’t be an enjoyable process - and who says you have to break the bank? As long as you are resourceful and creative (or you team up with someone that you would consider as such) the possibilities and money-saving options are endless!
Save money this Christmas You could take up knitting and make your loved ones something, start a DIY woodwork project and build them a useful and personal item like a beautiful, decorated new dresser or a music box - even a simple (or complex) photo frame is a great gift, especially when filled with a great family/couple photograph. Last year as a little personal touch, I ordered materials such as cords, charms and beads in bulk from an online retailer (at really reasonable prices) and managed to fashion some really eye-catching accessories for the girls in my family, some of which I’ve still spotted being worn to this day! It doesn’t matter that I couldn’t afford a Pandora bracelet or Swarovski necklace for all my relatives (I’ll save that for my next
Why not spend those cold, wet days at home making up some of your decorations for the holidays, rather than spending a chunk of change on replacing those tired ornaments? This could be as simple as candy cane-coloured paper chains; making clay ornaments with the kids as part of a fun arts and crafts workshop at home or even making 22

lottery win!). As long as there is plenty of thought behind what you do, it won’t be overlooked. The thing you need to remember is that we’re all in the same boat! We all spend a lot over the holidays and as long as you agree on a rough budget early, there won’t be any guilt if one of you pulls out an extravagant, completely over the top gift. Don’t be afraid to start dripping things in early either, if you start buying little gifts or find special offers on food you can freeze for the big Christmas dinner/parties, it’ll feel like less of a shock when you do the last minute Christmas shop (and getting online can save some agro too, as long as you leave plenty of time for things to get delivered).
everyone’s bag, but there are a lot of things to keep those hands busy that can lead to great accomplishments, cost-effective measures and even meeting new friends. For example, you could take up pottery, start a photography club, or even join a dance class (that’ll warm you up!). Provided you can find the space, you can do whatever you want. You can always refer to our Local Events Section to see what’s happening in the area aswell. If you have friends with similar interests – great! If not, find a local group or sports club to join in with. If you’re not the social type but you want to start getting active, why not invest in something like athome Zumba fitness? There is always a way! If of course, exercise sounds even less appealing than cold weather, why not teach yourself valuable skills or keep your brain busy instead while you’re at home and snuggled under a blanket? You could learn a new language, discover new recipes you want to try, start sketching or painting, or simply dive into a new book! With technology these days, a lot of working and socialising, as well well as the hustle and bustle of looking after the family and running errands, we rarely get the chance to get involved in a good book or get into art, but if you’re spending more time at home and need something to do, now is the perfect time! However you decide to spend the Winter season, we hope you all enjoy it and that you stay warm, happy and healthy.
Take up a hobby If you have yet to find a hobby, why not try to discover one this month? With fewer opportunities to go out and enjoy the weather, and a lot more chilly nights in, you can really start to give it some thought. Cross-stitching and baking might not be 23

ALL MY SONS Directed by Michael Rudman Fri 28 Oct - Sat 19 Nov A compelling story of love, guilt and the corrupting power of greed, All My Sons was Arthur Miller’s first great Broadway success sealing his reputation as one of the most influential playwrights of the 20th Century. This is the first time we present work by this extraordinary writer as part of our American season. Joe Keller is a thriving businessman who, during World War II, knowingly supplied the American airforce with defective engines, leading to the deaths of innocent pilots. To avoid the blame, he let his business partner take the fall, but during a sunny afternoon Joe is confronted by the consequences of his moral actions as a visitor arrives to reveal a secret that will rip his family apart.

ANNIE Presented by Surbiton High Thu 24 Nov - Sat 26 Nov Surbiton High School proudly presents one of the most popular and beloved musicals of all time, Annie, for a four-performance run at the Rose Theatre, Kingston. The production features a cast of over 130 girls and boys from Year 3 to Year 13 and promises to be our most entertaining musical production yet! ‘Annie’ follows the story of a young, plucky orphan who dreams of being reunited with her parents above all else. Her story begins at the Municipal Girls’ Orphanage under the supervision of the callous (and often drunk!) Miss Hannigan but quickly transforms into a heartwarming, rags-to-riches adventure, owing to the kindness of the billionaire Oliver Warbucks and his jovial staff. Their lives intertwine and they transform each other for the better.

How to Build a Dressing Table
DIY Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
Having a dressing table makes getting yourself ready so much more enjoyable on those chilly mornings. This guide could even lead to a Christmas gift for a loved one, and will help them to be a lot more organised. Here is what you’ll need for a standard sized dresser: - One ¾ inch thick piece of plywood, about 24 x 40 inches - Four interior hinges - One ¾ inch piece of plywood, 31 x 40 inches - Two door handles - Four pieces of 3/4-inch plywood, 31 x 23¼ inches) - 1½ inch wood screws - Six pieces of ¾ inch plywood, 11½ x 23¼ inches - Pencil
of the frame and screw into place along the edges.
- Two pieces of ¾ inch plywood, 31 x 13 Inches - Measuring tape
7. From the bottom of every cabinet, measure 1 foot upward and mark with your pencil. Place one of your 11½” x 23 ¼” pieces inside the cabinet where marked then screw into place. Repeat for your remaining 11½” pieces, then measuring 1 foot from the shelves fitted, screw into the sides.
- Drill with screwdriver bit Method: 1. Lay the 31” x 40” piece on a flat surface, standing vertically and resting on one of its 40” edges to create the back of the table. 2. Place your 11½” x 23¼” piece of plywood vertically on its 23¼” edge, then create an “L” shape by placing the smaller board next to the bigger one. This small board will create a side of the table. 3. Screw the back board into place using driving screws, spaced 6 inches apart and into the edges of the side pieces. Repeat steps 1-3 with the 31 x 23¼ pieces on the opposite side of the larger board to create a U shape. You can use brackets if you need. 4. Measure 11½” from the sides towards the middle of the back piece and mark with a pencil, then screw the other two 21 x 23¼ “ pieces on the marked locations until they are parallel. 5. Between the newly built sides, insert the 11½” x 23¼” pieces to create the cabinet bottoms. Screw them in about 4-6” apart, through the table and cabinet sides, and into the cabinet bottoms. 6. Place the 24” x 40” plywood piece on top
33
8. Attach the interior hinges on opposite sides of the cabinets, about 3 inches from the top and bottom and screw into the sides of the table. 9. Place the 31” x 13” plywood onto the hidges and screw in to create the cabinet doors, then screw your door handles to each door, adjacent to the hinges. If you want to attach a mirror to the table, screw the mirror legs into the back piece.

RESIDENTIAL ACCOUNTANT
Can I Afford to Retire?
Supplied by: Goddards Accountants Kingston Ltd
In 2015 the Government introduced AutoEnrolment as an idea for every person to have their own Personal Pension. This is because since June 2015 the Government has been paying out more in Pensions than it is collecting from National Insurance Contributions. In Australia the Scheme requires Employers and Employees to both pay in 8% of a persons’ salary to the Pension Scheme. In addition there are no opt outs, so everyone working pays in. Unfortunately in the UK, there are opt out clauses for most people.
With the abolition of Amenities by one’s 75th Birthday; Personal Pensions are a very attractive option; especially as one can invest in commercial property (and then live off the inflation linked rental income once retired). Also in such a situation the Pension Fund (i.e. property) becomes a tax-free asset of ones estate on death.
In the UK the State Pension age for men and women will rise to 67 by October 2020. Everyone in the Pension Industry knows this to be inadequate; as for the Scheme to be Self-Funding, no one should be allowed to retire until they are 75. In short, this State Scheme is Bankrupt; and sometime in the next 10 years it will no longer be possible to ignore, which will mean either freezing all State Pensions or taxing all tax payers at 30% (neither being acceptable). The Auto-Enrolment Scheme is a joke as a high percentage of people are opting out.
35
As a result everyone should look to setting up a Personal Pension and investing between 5% and 10% of their earnings in order to be able to afford to retire when they get to 75. It should be remembered that HMRC give tax relief on the payments.

Peace of Mind for the Price of a Coffee
PROPERTY Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
The number of UK households renting from private landlords is at a 30-year high. If you are one of those landlords, you’ll know that it’s a challenging job with a considerable level of responsibility. We asked property expert Lucie White to explain why using a property manager is sometimes better than struggling on alone. For some, being a landlord is a chosen path; a career entered into with eyes wide open and the appropriate amount of energy and enthusiasm. For others, it’s a role they have fallen into almost by accident – perhaps as the result of holding onto a previous residence or as part of retirement planning. Often it is something that is undertaken alongside the ‘day job’, or juggled with raising a family and looking after a main home.
• You’re not confident or experienced in managing a property or tenants. • You have more properties than you can handle.
What many accidental landlords don’t realise is that managing a rental property is similar to running a small business, with all the practical and legal responsibilities that entails. From the moment a property is advertised for rent until the day the keys are given to a tenant, there are 145 pieces of UK legislation that apply – this is not a process to enter into without proper thought! Employing a property manager can be a great way to ensure that your responsibilities as a landlord are carried out and your investment is properly cared for. Here are some key reasons why handing over the reins might be a good move: • You live too far away from the property to get there quickly if you’re needed. • Your job, family or other commitments take up much of your time. 37
Contrary to popular belief, property management needn’t be expensive; most of our clients pay no more than they would for their daily cappuccino. For that, their investment is looked after by someone who has the right knowledge and experience, who can devote the necessary time and attention and who can send someone to fix a leaky tap at the drop of a hat. If you’d like to find out how our property management services could work for you, get in touch for a free, no-obligation chat. Lucie White is the owner and founder of Lucie White & Company, offering property services and advice to private landlords across South West London and Surrey. RESTAURANT REVIEW
Moksha Restaurant The brand new Moksha restaurant has just arrived in New Malden, and we had the great opportunity to sample their delicious and unique menu. This place is more than just another curry restaurant, (though we are delighted to mention that they offer free delivery right to your home!) the Moksha is run by warm, friendly staff with a wealth of experience in hospitality. We were instantly welcomed and regularly attended to, as were their other customers, who we could see were over the moon with their meals and the wonderful service.
their menu is varied to suit all needs, from vegetarians to seafoodlovers, mild to spicy, and all food is full of fresh, quality ingredients. Their beautifully presented, mouthwatering meals had us grabbing for the delivery menus as we left, and their dessert menu is impressive in itself.
The Moksha’s décor is modern and contemporary, accommodating for groups both large and small. They also offer catering services for functions such as weddings and birthday parties. The restaurant is the only one of its kind in the area and is conveniently situated for buses, with parking nearby. The atmosphere is very comfortable and relaxed, and they treat their customers like family, welcoming all of their guests with a smile, as well as complimentary starters!
Once you have a taste of their delectable courses, it’s clear that the chef, Sanjay Kumar is an absolute genius. These delights can be accompanied by their extensive beer & wine list, cocktails and mocktails; or followed by their various aged whiskeys, brandys and fantastic tea and coffee selection. Thank you so much to Arjun and his team for a great experience. We insist you pay them a visit!
But the winning aspect of the Moksha is of course: the food! With an expert chef on hand and a knowledge of authentic Indian flavours,
