Dear All What a busy couple of months we’ve seen in Kingston. Congratulations to IYAF and everyone involved. If you didn’t manage to get to any of the events, you really missed out! Please make sure you get to the next year’s events. They have promised me its going to be even bigger! The fun hasn’t stopped there, with the Kingston Carnival rounding off the summer’s awesome events on the 4th September! We have been busy as well……The networking business we have set up has exploded! We are now officially up to 15 groups, which span from Heathrow through to Worthing! Our target of getting to 30 groups by Christmas seems a mere question of time. Oops! – I have done it…..said the C word! – I am looking forward to Christmas this year! Again, Kingston has so much to offer! My favourites are the Eden Craft Fair outside All Saints Church, and the efforts that The Kingston Rotary Club put in with the Santa’s sleigh! In between them we have the Rotary’s Fireworks to look forward to in November. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled on Facebook for that event! You will see this month we have a couple of new adverts from The British School of Rock on pg21, Claire Dyson on pg15, an awesome fundraising event from St Raphael’s Hospice which looks like a lot of fun on pg32, and for your web designs Pegasus Creative on pg31. This month’s competition is from JOY Indian restaurant on page 40! Read the review – We seem to be getting a lot of curry these days. But the quality of each has been great, JOY is up there as one of the best! Congratulations to Tia Smith for winning the meal for 2 from the Boaters Inn, we hope you enjoyed it! I hope you had a great summer, and thank you so much for your support so far this year. Kind regards John – Omni Local

OmniLocal - Kingston Upon Thames • September 2016

This month we’re talking to Joanna Stone, who has recently exchanged her successful career in Financial Services to have a life of her dreams in the Health and Wellness sector.

LOCAL BUSINESS Supplied by: Joanna Stone Forever

Q1: Hi Joanna, could you please tell our readers about your career change? A1: Yes, after 30 years in finance and always in an employed capacity, I decided I wanted to have an income derived from what I wanted to do and from what made me happy. The school fees had finished but I had no job security, a tedious commute and I just dreaded the thought of another 5-10 years of the same old, same old… Q2: How did you discover Forever? A2: I was introduced by an old friend who is now one of Forever’s most successful and inspirational ambassadors. I witnessed first hand his passion and success in the business and recognised the huge potential for myself. I loved the beauty and cosmetic products, the company’s ethos, the no fertilizers, no pesticides and animal-friendly approach.

having children. I have a better work/life balance and using our products has renewed my energy levels and improved my quality of life.

Q3: Who are Forever?

Q6: What is your usual clientele?

A3: Founded in 1978, Forever is a cash-rich, debt-free well established global company with a presence in over 158 countries. Forever has an experienced management team and professional advisory board, including medical professionals who endorse our products. Our turnover was in excess of $2.5bn last year and the company is registered with the DSA, thus protecting my customers, myself and my team.

A6: Our clients are the people we care about, our families, our friends, ourselves, our work colleagues and people we meet in everyday life. Our animals too! Q7: Do you have any advice for those looking to get into a similar line of work?

Q4: How has Forever impacted your life? A4: I now have financial independence and control of my life. I have flexibility and above all, time. I am my own boss and benefit directly from my energy and input. My earnings are uncapped so I can get as little or as much as I am prepared to put in.

A7: Forever provides part-time work, with fulltime earnings. I’d recommend anyone to start off part-time. The training is second to none, so anyone can go fulltime when they are ready.

Q5: Has it helped your health?

It is illegal for a promoter or a participant in a trading scheme to persuade anyone to make a payment by promising benefits from getting others to join a scheme. Do not be misled by claims that high earnings are easily achieved.

A5: I am 56 and had a few health blips in my last few years of working in the City. I now feel fitter and healthier than I have since

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY

THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: CHARITY Leanna Carl - Omni Local

Catch ‘em All with the Family! As you’ve all probably noticed, Pokemon Go is HUGE right now. However, unless you or your kids grew up in the 90’s, you might not know much about it. The new mobile game isn’t just another time-consuming way to be anti-social, it’s actually a great way to get a little exercise! Although I personally don’t think those “preteen” should have mobile phones, its more common these days. For those who do, or for teenagers who never leave the house, I’d strongly suggest encouraging the download of this app. Even adults can enjoy it! I’m in my 20’s and can’t get enough, celebrities have even taken to it...but it doesn’t require constant attention. You play when you play and the game gets better when taking a walk. What are Pokemon? Pokemon first hit decades ago, allowing kids everywhere to envision a world full of both cute and monstrous creatures. These unique beings could be discovered and evolved into stronger versions of themselves with increased abilities and defences. To become a Pokemon master meant catching all types, as well as fighting your way to the top with other Pokemon trainers. The Pokemon (or pocket monsters) themselves appear to be influenced by types of animals and each type fits into a different group from Water/Fire pokemon to Poisonous or Grass types. There’s a lot of variety and when it comes to battles you have to use your head to win, eg. fight water against fire and use defence when required. It’s not as violent as it sounds though! How does this new app work? Using the GPS on your mobile, this app tracks your movements as you wander about town with your phone in hand, and your phone will buzz as soon as you encounter a wild pokemon. Once alerted, you can select the pokemon and use your finger or thumb to fling an empty pokeball towards the creature, capture it, then rename it to your liking and continue to fill your “Pokedex”.

6

These creatures can then be evolved into larger, rarer breeds and strengthened for gym battles. Gyms are randomly situated on your map and allow you to train. There are also Pokestops to provide goodies and replenishment. These stops are usually found at landmarks or libraries, etc. There are special items to increase activity when hunting, eggs that require a lot of walking to hatch and the ability to snapshot Pokemon when you find them to show the world/ laugh at with the locations (such as the above picture I caught by the Pokemon-filled Riverside in Kingston). The best thing about the app is having a new hobby, more reason to stay active, and something to get excited about between friends/fellow trainers. Just be aware of the extra drain on your battery!

COMMUNITY PERSON

Laura Smyth

Supplied by: Yorda Adventures

There is no describing the importance of having access to support when looking after a child with learning difficulties. Yorda Adventures is a non-profit organisation founded in 2006 which works on providing fun play projects for children and young people with severe learning difficulties in and around the borough of Kingston upon Thames. At the heart of Yorda is Laura Smyth, a passionate individual who realised she wanted to work with children after working with Kingston families within social services. She named the company Yorda, as that is how one of the children who inspired Laura to start it up used to pronounce her name. Laura, describing her company, said: “Yorda has been my everything for well over a decade. I first dreamt of setting it up as a 14 year old - I still pinch myself 20 years later that it’s real. To be able to come to work every day and spend time with these children is a real privilege.” Yorda provide play schemes, an after school club and adventure holidays amongst other things in order to support families with children with disabilities. “When we had our first volunteer day to help with our playground equipment we put up a trampoline with a colourful circus tent over it. The first time one of our children, Rustam used it was a brilliant moment. He’s normally very quiet and doesn’t move around too quickly but he was highly motivated to have a bounce and got straight up the ladder and proceeded to jump as high as he could,” said Laura while describing her favourite memories. Laura has recently been rewarded with a Paul Fellowship Award after being nominated by the Kingston Rotarians. The Paul Harris Fellow recognition established in 1957 acknowledges people who contribute or have had contributions made in their name of $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation.

“Yorda and the Rotary are similar in their aims to support and serve the community. We directly serve children with disabilities but this extends in a ripple effect to their families and in turn the whole community. Rotary does this on a much bigger scale and to a much wider community. However to have this level of recognition is very humbling.” Laura, who would like Yorda to keep growing and help as many families as possible, said: “I want to ensure that Yorda goes from strength to strength helping more and more families. We want to keep expanding our offer of services to Yorda children to keep meeting the changing needs of these fantastic families.” For more information please visit www. yordaadventures.co.uk.

LOCAL CHARITY

THIS MONTH’S CHARITY Supplied by:

Fircroft: Support for People with a Mental Health Issue

Jill Fletcher - Fircroft Trust

The Fircroft Trust is a local charity working in Kingston upon Thames with adults living in the community with severe to moderate mental health problems and/or learning disabilities. One of the privileges of our work is seeing people receive the support they need to help them manage their illness and improve their quality of life. Here is the story of one of our service users: “My name is Carol, and the best part of 30 years ago, I had a breakdown… I hit the biggest, deepest, darkest pit I’d ever known and to which there seemed no way out…. and life was hell”. This is how Carol begins to tell of her battle for recovery from her mental illness. Back then, Carol was in and out of hospital receiving various kinds of treatment, including ECT, medications and talking therapies. Even after receiving her diagnosis of depression and borderline personality disorder, it was still a difficult time, as it was something she needed to come to terms with, and to understand how her illness affected her. She battled with her illness for ten years before trying out the Fircroft Centre. What she found here was “a really warm, caring and relaxed atmosphere where there wasn’t any pressure to ‘perform’ - this was very different from the NHS model I had experienced”. At Fircroft she was able to join in various groups, helping her to believe in herself. She continues: “It’s a place where I can experiment with doing different things. Where I can try out things, but there is never

9

a pressure to have to do something or be someone.” It continues to be a long journey for Carol, but with the right kind of support, she is beginning to understand and process the turmoil she constantly feels inside of her. The Fircroft Centre depends on donations to continue our work. Please would you consider supporting us? Please send any donations to The Fircroft Trust, 96 Ditton Road, Surbiton, Surrey, KT6 6RH or through our website at www.thefircrofttrust.org. Many thanks.

LOVE KINGSTON

Challenge Yourself to Support your Community Individual and team challenges are an excellent way of doing something brilliant and surprising to raise vital funds for Love Kingston. Taking on a challenge with your colleagues, club or friends can help you set ambitious goals, motivate each other to succeed and foster team spirit.

Supplied by: Sorrel Parsons - Love Kingston

Whether it’s an exhilarating adventure sport, an outdoor wild challenge or organising a community event it will be an experience that you or your team won’t forget, at the same time as raising vital funds for your community. The hardest part of a personal or team challenge is deciding what to do! Why take on a challenge for Love Kingston? Love Kingston is your community fund, supporting inspiring local charitable organisations to reach people in need in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.

The event followed a 100-mile route on closed roads through the capital and into Surrey’s stunning countryside, passing twice through the heart of Kingston.

Being connected to where we live, work and learn creates healthy and happy communities. Sadly too many residents in our rapidly growing, ageing and diversifying borough are isolated from both people and place. That’s why we are currently funding projects tackling isolation and encouraging integration.

Congratulations to all riders that took part. Donations are still coming in, with one rider, Ed Balcomb already surpassing his £1,000 target with help from his company’s Corporate Generosity Matching programme. A huge thanks also goes to our team’s local business sponsors, Omnilocal Business Networking Kingston, Databac and CNM Estates.

It’s worth remembering that around 85% of all giving goes to just 5% of charities. It’s those that shout the loudest that get the lion’s share. At Love Kingston we pride ourselves on funding grassroots projects that are the life blood of the community. Donations from your challenge will also meet the changing needs of communities for generations to come through the Love Kingston Legacy Fund. Find out more at www.love-kingston.org.uk One cause, 18 riders and the big RideLondon challenge After months of training, 18 fantastic cyclists took on the challenge of the Prudential RideLondon Surrey 100 on Sunday 31st July to raise funds for Love Kingston.

10

There are fantastic opportunities for local businesses to get involved with Love Kingston. Get in touch with Sorrel Parsons at sorrel. parsons@londoncf.org.uk or call 07990 925342 to find out how.

Kingston and Europe

LOCAL HISTORY Supplied by: Mike Seigel - Kingston Tour Guides

With the recent referendum and plans for Brexit still dominating the News, I am this month looking back at Kingston’s earlier connections with Europe. Although the Romans moved the capital of their newly-conquered province from Colchester to London, and quickly spread their way of life around the South-East of England, there is no direct evidence of Romans living in Kingston. Yet many Roman citizens may well have passed through, either by road or river, and it is perhaps worth remembering that the Romans very much oversaw the free movement of peoples; from the first century AD any freeborn citizen anywhere in the empire was a Roman citizen, with equal rights, whether he was born in Rome, Italy or the outer fringes of the empire such as remote Britannia! The first recorded evidence of Kingston goes back to the Saxon period, namely 838, when King Egbert of Wessex, grandfather of the much more famous King Alfred, held a “Council of Kingston”, attended by nobles, archbishops and bishops to discuss the problem of the invading Danes. Yet the Saxons themselves had been invaders only a few centuries earlier, and, even after Alfred defeated the Danes, and his grandson Athelstan, crowned in Kingston and called the “First King of England”, for the next one hundred and fifty years England was ruled by a mixture of Saxon and Danish kings – until 1066, when the country was famously conquered by William of Normandy and thus a new group of Europeans arrived. So Kingston can boast an ethnic mix going right back more than a thousand years with different waves of immigrants coming from various parts of Europe. And during the Middle Ages trade with Europe was all-important to Kingston, as with much of the rest of the country, with wool being a particulars highly valued commodity. Evidence for this can be seen in All Saints Church where there is a 14th century wallpainting of St. Blaise, the patron saint of wool-makers.

Perhaps it was because of its historic connections with Europe that 62% of the borough voted to remain?! But, whatever your views on Brexit, if you are interested in history and would like to discover more about Kingston as you walk around our town, why not join one of our tours, led by specially trained volunteers? The tours start outside the church gates in the Ancient Market Place at 11am every Sunday in summer and on every first Sunday of the month from October to March. The charge is £5 per adult and £3 for children under 12 - or perhaps you might to arrange a private walk for a group of your own friends. For further information on all our walks and talks please ring: 0794 185 1783 or visit our recently revamped website: www. kingston-tour-guides.org.uk

ARTS

More Art, or Rather Mehr Kunst Bitte

Supplied by: Rachel Pearcey

Well, we tidied and dusted, we framed, we finished things off and now KAOS’ Open Studios weekends are a thing of the past. It was hard work but we all had a lot of fun, and when we weren’t busy talking to visitors and selling work we had a chance to visit friends’ studios, and to make friends with new members - it is not easy to get all 58 of the KAOS artists together in one room, at the same time. Now members of Kingston Artists’ Open Studios are eagerly looking forward to our second KAOS trip to Kingston’s twin town of Oldenburg in Northern Germany, at the invitation of their equivalent of Open Studios, BBK (Bund Bildender Künstlerinnen). BBK is a nationwide artists’ association with a group in every ‘county’ created expressly to encourage the arts all over Germany. It is much like KAOS but unlike most open studios groups round the UK the German artists are government funded, they are even contributing to our travel expenses. On our first visit to Oldenburg in 2014 there were just eight artists, this year 16 of us are going. As well as sharing their studio spaces our BBK friends share their homes and on our last visit we were almost overwhelmed by their kindnesses and generosity. The Oldenburg open studios are held over just one weekend so it is a short, intense and busy, three days. It is wonderful to be amongst a large group of artists; all creating vastly different work but all talking the same language (even though we often don’t understand each other), exchanging ideas, artistic likes and dislikes, being inspired and hopefully even inspiring.

Oldenburg art exchange off the ground, and Patrick Simpkins, currently working in France, are having their own exhibition in the BBK art gallery in the centre of Oldenburg. So now we all have difficult choices to make: which works do we want to take and show and are they small enough to go in our suitcases? www.kingstonartistsopenstudios.co.uk

Two KAOS members, Hanna Ten Doornkaat, who has been, together with Martina van de Gey, the current chairwoman of BBK in Oldenburg, hugely influential in getting the 13

Eating Healthy Needn’t Give you a Headache!

HEALTH & FITNESS Supplied by: Heather Lamb

Even a few quick and basic searches of the web bring up vast amounts of research and advice showing that what we eat (and how much) has a big effect on how likely we are to develop heart disease, type 2 diabetes even Alzheimer’s. As well as staving off health complications, on a more positive note, what we eat also maintains healthy brain function, bone density and contributes to glossy, bouncing hair and strong nails. Look closer though and it can be quite confusing. One day it seems that something is off limits, saturated fat for example, and the next it is back on the menu and something else, such as how much sugar is added to our food, is in the spotlight. Cholesterol was implicated in furring up our arteries, which increased blood pressure and the risk of heart attack. Now it seems there is “good” cholesterol too. How then do we make sense of all this conflicting advice and eat healthily without having to go to the supermarket with a huge list of what to eat, to ensure our bodies get everything they need?

Red: Apples, tomatoes, strawberries, rhubarb and watermelon help to improve the health of your heart, blood and joints. Yellow: Bananas, lemons, sweet corn, peppers and pineapple assist in eye vision and digestion. Orange: Carrots, peaches, apricots, mangos and pumpkins aid your immune system and help to rebuild collagen in the skin. Green: Pears, avocados, peas, cucumber and cabbage are powerful detoxers and help fight off viruses and bacteria.

Motivated by finding a way of eating that would reduce cancer risks in particular (but also promote health generally) Chris Woollams has developed The Rainbow Diet. Whilst it is an effective way to eat healthy and help prevent chronic illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes, it also brings a smile to the face and is fun too. You could also reduce artificial sugar intake by swapping sugary snacks with naturally sweet foods from the six colour categories; Red, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue/Purple and White.

Blue/Purple: Grapes, plums, blackberries, raisins and eggplant are rich in antioxidants and reduces the risk of heart disease. White: Mushrooms, cauliflower, onions, parsnips and shallots help to ease inflammation and lowers the risk of some cancers. See? Healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring or overly confusing! It really is as simple as naming the colours of a rainbow!

GARDENING

Increasing your Plants for Free

Supplied by: Janet Bacon

The days are shortening and the nights are getting colder, so now is a good time to divide herbaceous perennials. Simply dig up the plant and split it into pieces to make several new plants - a good way to increase the number of these plants for free and spread them around the garden. Many herbaceous plants flop outwards from the centre and it’s the pieces on the outsides of the clumps that are youngest and most vigorous. So keep these for replanting and discard the older centres. If the clump is difficult to split, use two garden forks back to back and lever them apart. Make sure to enrich the soil where you are planting with manure and compost, then water in the new divisions well. September is also a good time to buy and plant new perennials as the weather tends to be wetter and therefore you need to water less. Although with any new plants it is best to make sure that they receive plenty of water in the first year. This does not mean the end of the summer colour because container plants and hanging baskets will keep going until the end of autumn if you continue to feed weekly with liquid fertiliser and dead-head. Ensuring a good Spring Display September is a good time to start planning for next spring’s floral display. Once the summer annual bedding plants have finished, you can plant spring bedding such as pansies, wallflowers and ornamental daisies. Water them well before planting and give them a good soak whenever the weather is dry to help them establish quickly.

possible so they can start putting down roots. Wait until November to plant tulips as the cool, moist conditions of late autumn suit tulips best. Lawn Maintenance As the autumn leaves start to fall keep the lawn clear of fallen dead leaves and thatching quickly and easily by using a lawn scarifier or a suitable lawn rake and store the leaves. Composting the leaves is an excellent way to give your compost and your garden a boost. This can be a slow process but if you set your mower to bag the clippings and mow the lawn and leaves together. You should get a well shredded and mixed material. Now is also a good time for general maintenance on established lawns. This can be done by aerating with a machine which spikes or you can do it by hand with a fork. Once you have aerated the lawn apply a top dressing of lawn sand and towards the end of the month apply an autumn fertiliser. For more gardening advice call 020 8393 7970.

KIDS

Enrol into the British School of Rock!

Kids don’t learn the guitar just to play by themselves in their room – young rock musicians want to play a band and show people what they can do. BSOR offers expert tuition and the chance to play in a band each week. About BSOR BSOR classes have a maximum of 5 students (aged 8-18) per tutor and tailored to each learner’s needs. Sessions last one hour and consist of 45 minutes of intense training, then end with 15 minutes playing live with the other students. SPECIAL FEATURE

Beat Those Back-to-School (or Back to Work) Blues!

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local dinner. You could ask your friends or loved ones to chip in and order something in, or have a cooking session with your friends or even your children; this can be a lot more fun than it sounds! Go for a Back to School Shop A shopping treat for you and for the kids will definitely cushion the blow. Taking the little ones shopping with you for school supplies can be more enjoyable than getting everything done yourself. As long as they don’t misbehave too much and you’re willing to put in the time, your kids will love picking out their new stationary or school shoes, and you’ll get them pumped up, ready to learn and looking to show off their new stuff. If it’s not as fun to bring them along, you can always go alone and surprise the kids at home, and why not treat yourself too?

Whether you’re having a tough time easing back into your usual work patterns after the Summer - or you’re worried about your children growing cranky during their transition - hopefully knowing what’s on in and around Kingston and how to ease the pain of getting back to work will make the next month great! Below are some ideas on how to keep those Summer holiday smiles! Don’t Completely go Back! Try not to totally lose that relaxed feeling. Keep some of the chilled, care-free attitude for the evenings and weekends. Show your little ones the upsides to going back to school as well, for example - seeing their friends, sharing their holiday experiences, not to mention escaping the parents for a little while! Remind yourself to take time to relax as well, have a spa day one weekend or call in a babysitter and have a well-earned night out! If you aren’t sure about where to go during your time off, why not refer to the Local Events Section? Although you might find yourself feeling tired after a day’s work, there’s nothing stopping you from enjoying dinners out and live music nights with friends or family. Or, if money’s a little tight and going out seems daunting, have friends or family over for 22

You could even get yourself some new clothes for work, and make yourself feel a lot more confident and comfortable with your appearance when you get back to basics. Although a shopping binge on new clothes isn’t the best move for your finances, a great outfit gives such a boost of power when stepping out into the world. You’ll find yourself a lot more fuelled and ready to

stops you from getting bored or tired. As long as you make the tough days count, taking breaks and changing things up won’t do any harm, and will help you out in the long run. Give Your Kids a Helping Hand

attack whatever job comes your way when you’re not shying away from anything. Plan a Last “Hurrah” With the Summer fun coming to a close, why not get everyone together for one final toast to a great holiday season? Send off those lazy days with a smile and host a barbecue or day trip with friends or family. Once you get all those adventurous, excited feelings out of the way, almost in a sense that you eventually exhaust yourself when it comes to fun, you’ll find it a lot easier to focus. You wouldn’t want to ride rollercoasters every single day, after all.

It’s a similar theory to going on a diet – knowing there are rules and restrictions means a lot of people have one last blow out where calories don’t count, or the occasional “cheat day” to take the edge off. This may slow the process just a tad, but it’ll make things a lot more enjoyable for you, and life’s too short not to enjoy the little things! Just like exercising, mixing up your routine makes it easier to stick to your goals and 23

Ease them in a little by doing some reading at night, or helping them with any homework or studying. You could even help them practice their Maths and English to get them feeling more confident when they go back to learning. This even applies for you. If you’re dreading getting back to work, take it slow and start early, for example, why not do some research beforehand – your own homework task, if you like. Or, if you have quite an active job, try not to spend all of those last holiday days with your feet up and laying back in the garden – keep up a regular exercise regime or just take a long walk every now and then. It could make a world of difference for your muscles when things go back to normal. When you start a workout for the first time and your body isn’t used to the extra strain, it can really knock you back and possibly make you feel weak for a few days. The same thing happens with work, and it becomes harder to get on your feet and back to work when you’re feeling overwhelmed, so be sure to ease into it – regular activity is important anyway, so try to get some exercise into your life whenever you can. Just don’t overdo it!

LEARNING

Getting Back to Basics

Supplied by: Leanna Carl -

With those fun Summer holidays out of the way, kids (and adults!) have been easing back into their usual routines and getting stuck into their careers/schoolwork for the next year. Sadly, some of us are still pining for our vacation time and finding it hard to stay focused when we get back to work. So why not give yourself a helping hand during the next break and stay in the educational loop a little bit? With a little effort you can create fun, yet educational ways to get brains buzzing and exercise the mind during time off. It could benefit you and your children to show them learning can be fun as well. There’s no reason why your children can’t let loose a little on the weekends; but enjoyable, educational activities will help to keep their brains active along the way and may cushion the blow of going back to school when the break is over. Everyone should take some time for relaxing and leisurely activity, as well as spending time with friends and family, but you can always combine the two. Avoid a little back to school stress and do something fun that helps exercise you and your kid’s minds. Maybe you could take them for a day trip to museums or to the zoo and see that they soak up a bit of knowledge along the way. Visuals always help and with your enthusiasm, you can all have a really great time while touring places like this. Alternatively, you can spend some time at home saving some money and making your own educational workshops or watching thought-provoking documentaries with your children. Even playing board games 24

Omni Local

could help them, or quizzing each other. Sometimes just sitting at a computer with your child while they participate in online learning activities can really help them get motivated. Throw in some messy fun if you’d like to remind them of their art or cooking classes at school and keep them busy on a rainy day. As long as you encourage your children and show you care, by letting them know how proud you are of their achievements, you’ll boost their self confidence and make them really want to get back to school to show off what they’ve learned and absorb even more knowledge. It doesn’t hurt to keep your mind sharp either. You’ll find yourself a lot more relaxed at work if you’re using a little of your spare time on puzzles or testing yourself with trivia questions.

DIY

Putting Together a Trellis Having a wooden trellis in your garden not only looks great in a decorative sense, but it also allows for better growth of vines and climbing flowers, which can look really beautiful against the exterior of your home. Bamboo is incredibly versatile and is also a great renewable resource. It’s strong, as well as lightweight and flexible, not to mention it can suit practically any garden décor.

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

You can fit a new trellis with the help of your local landscaping professionals or at your local hardware store, or you can build one yourself and determine the perfect size/style. Here is our step-by-step guide to creating your own trellis. What you’ll need: • Bamboo (or pine, etc) canes, in various diameters

your desired shape, which could be a traditional fan shape, a criss-cross pattern, or more intricate if you’re feeling brave. Once they are spaced evenly, mark any intersections with a pencil as they can move around whilst being connected.

• A saw • Lashing straps/cords • Pencil • Ruler or tape measure Method: 1. The first step to creating the perfect trellis is to map out in your mind where it will be put, and to take its shape into account. Try to draw up your ideal design on paper and figure out the measurements beforehand. The easiest way is to take a tape measure out into the garden and map out the lengths/width. Then mark to scale how long you’ll need each cane to be. 2. Once you’ve figured out your measurements, use a hand saw to cut off the ends of each cane to the desired length. If possible, cut at the upper end (the side that faces upwards) above the solid nodes, as you want to avoid any water from collecting within the open ends. Excessive moisture can encourage rotting and should be avoided. Cut your horizontal canes as needed as well. 3. Lay the canes on a flat surface into

28

4. Begin fastening the canes together at the marked intersections. Use cord that is about 4/5ft long and strong. Wrap your cord around one cane from front to back, then pull frontwards from each side and wrap each piece around the next cane. Pull the cord underneath the additional cane, and repeat on either side until secure. Fasten as tightly as possible. For a simple box-shaped trellis you may even be able to fasten with screws if you prefer.

TRAVEL

Top 3 Places to Visit During the Holiday Blues Season

Supplied by: Solene Capitolin

September is always a difficult month full of holiday blues. That back to work feeling is hard to fight, but you don’t have to travel a thousand miles to find a beautiful place to get your mind off things. Here are a few not so far destinations for a breath-taking weekend away. Marrakech Escape to a loud, colourful city full of secrets. Dive into the Souk markets where you can find anything and everything including the perfect gifts to bring back home, all in the presence of the locals who are always willing to help. Tip: the first price given to you in the markets is a price that the seller is expecting you to haggle down. Barcelona

From art galleries to clubs to Spanish restaurants, you will always find something to do. See the Segrada Família in the morning, the Park Güell in the afternoon and enjoy evening paella at the Plaça Reial. Tip: if you plan to use the local underground, ask about the three-day tourist tickets. Venice If you are a lover of outstanding architecture, historical galleries and good coffee, Venice is the place for you: Soothing Gondola rides through the narrow streets of Venice with wonderful views and enough art to last a lifetime. If luxury shopping is more your thing, Venice is equipped with all the designer shops you need! Tip: try the cappuccino at Caffe Concerto!

Hosting a Dinner Party

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

This month, if you’re interested in lending out your home to neighbours, friends or family through a home-cooked meal – why not take it the extra mile and show off your culinary/hosting skills? For example: Keep things balanced Don’t keep things too heavy, especially if you’re planning on any after dinner activities and hoping for empty plates. Keep appetisers light, add plenty of salad/vegetables and avoid overly stodgy desserts. Repeatitiveness is also a big no-no. Even the biggest cheese enthusiast may not want a baked camembert starter, followed by a cheesey pasta bake and potato gratin, with a cheeseboard after dinner. I personally love cheese, but even I would struggle with a menu like that. Be adventurous, but not too adventurous

Take breaks

Although its exciting to try new things, and you’re guaranteed to leave a lasting impression by serving something new, don’t be too obscure about it or cook anything too exotic for your loved ones’ palettes. You’ll know who is open-minded and who isn’t, after all. Trying a recipe that’s brand new to you can also be risky – don’t stress yourself out with anything iffy!

If you start early in the day and keep things chilled or warm as applicable, you’ll have less tying you to the kitchentops for the whole night. This allows you to enjoy yourself more during your dinner party, or to see that your guests have plenty to drink and keep busy while they wait for the next course. You won’t want to miss all the conversation, and they’ll be hoping for your presence during long waits for dessert and so on.

Plan ahead to avoid surprises Check with your guests about any special dietary needs and make sure everyone has something they can eat and enjoy. Alternatively, you can create two different dishes per course to give your guests options, such as a vegetarian alternative or gluten free foods. If you create a timeplan to get things sorted, you’ll find things a lot easier to put together. You don’t want to find there isn’t enough oven space or things haven’t set right. There is a lot you can even make the day before.

Don’t blow the bank on it Any efforts you put into creating a great night and a great dining experience will be well appreciated and it doesn’t require you shelling out on the best cuts of steak and expensive bottles of champagne. Shop smart, and If you can, plan something seasonal. In season produce will be both delicious and cost-effective, which will save you any regrets later. It’ll also be easier to plan out what to serve. No one will be disappointed when looking at your menu!

A fresh approach to property – the Lucie White & Company philosophy

PROPERTY Supplied by: Lucie White & Company

At Lucie White & Company we offer a different, more personalised approach – and our philosophy still reflects that. Our take on lettings and property management has three main themes: One size rarely fits all We are not a high street agent with branded BMWs, a fridge full of fizzy water and standardised policies that apply to all. We know that every tenant, landlord and property is unique, so we tailor our services accordingly. Our clients all have different motivations – be they financial, practical or emotional – and our small, flexible team adapts to every set of circumstances with a high degree of professionalism. Sensible, stress-free service Each of us owns at least one property. Between us, we have decades’ of practical experience of the lettings market – but we’re also familiar with the personal stresses, strains and emotions associated with buying or renting a home. We won’t cut corners and we won’t put people, or property, at risk. You can trust us to look after you and your investment.

Happy tenants, happy clients, happy team Although the business has grown over the years and the number of properties we manage has increased, one thing has always stayed the same, a first-class service from our team. We have a rewarding and happy environment with staff that are passionate and committed to providing a service that

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Joy Indian Restaurant We visited Joy recently for dinner; in summary it was ‘superb’ and ‘perfect’. We were greeted by attentive, welcoming staff who opened the door for us when arriving and leaving: they were so nice and friendly. The décor and atmosphere was light, modern and airy but not cold - with beautiful, cheerful paintings and spotlessly clean. There was quiet music in the background, allowing easy conversations - perfect for any occasion, whether a business meeting or conference, a party or a quiet tete a tete. The restaurant is nicely presented with tables for two to four, then opens out under a lovely airy skylight with a larger area for parties or groups, without interfering with those wanting a quiet evening. The food is a unique mix of Indian and Bangladeshi, with a large selection of vegetarian and meat dishes. A wide variety of wines, local Indian beers and spirits are available. The chef caters for allergies by freshly cooking what is required (or not required!). I’d suggest the Prawn Sizzler, lamb Nali Gosht and Tamarind Chicken. Catering for eat in, takeaway/delivery, outside catering (which I highly recommend from experience – delivered in beautiful copper terrines), parties, business conferences/

meetings, charity events. On Sunday they have an Eat As Much Buffet lunch for a great price too. (Parking available on all nearby streets and 5 mins walk from Surbiton Station. 15% discount for students) Thank you Mr Hussain and his excellent team for a wonderful evening.
