I am the Kingston Dementia Action coordinator and my role is to deliver dementia awareness to those across the borough, through a national programme called Dementia Friends. Our aim is for Kingston to become a dementia welcoming community. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m married, living in New Malden and I have three children and a miniature schnauzer called Brian. interested in the complexities of the disease.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve worked with Staywell for over 4 years. It has 70 years experience of supporting people to live safely and independently in their own homes. We are local and therefore most of our staff and members know the area, which makes a real difference. Our services are for people over 60 years old in the Borough. We run many support services helping hundreds of people, including a vital volunteer and befriending service.

There is a great need for support for this ageing generation, so a career in adult social care is so rewarding, I have always found the best part of the role is meeting people. I attend all the Networking events and engage with businesses, public sector, NHS and voluntary sector. My focus this year is inter generational dementia awareness with schools and youth groups. I recently did a session at 1st Hook Scouts, 69 of them and Kingston Academy!

My interest in dementia started as I worked at Raleigh house, the Staywell social centre in New Malden, where I saw an increase of people living with dementia. I also had two uncles, one with vascular dementia and the other- Parkinsons with lewy bodies, so I started to research a lot and became

Home-Start Richmond, Kingston & Hounslow Home-Start is a family charity that offers support to struggling families with children in those critical early years under the age of 5. Through home-visits, the charity offers emotional and practical support to parents. The volunteers are at the very heart of the charity, and being parents themselves, understand the stresses. Last year around 45% of people who enquired about volunteering went on to attend the preparation course and 92% became HomeStart volunteers. “I’m a Mum with two children; one of them has various problems so I understand the pressures of family life. I’ve been lucky, as help has always been there. Now it’s my turn to help, because I can. Being a volunteer is something I am proud of.” - Volunteer. Once matched with a suitable family, volunteers will then visit at home for 2-3 hours per week, for up to 9 months. Support varies according to the needs of the family, but volunteers will listen, offer practical help, but most importantly, enable the parents to confidently manage family life. “I find it one of the most satisfying occupations I have ever undertaken – to see a family gaining confidence is just so gratifying.” Volunteer. Home-Start offers Advanced Training Sessions for volunteers, covering topics such as autism, healthy eating, parental mental health issues and pediatric first aid. The current retention rate of the volunteers is 79% (20% higher than the Home-Start UK-wide average), and their support was recently demonstrated with the charity having its ‘Investing in Volunteers’ reward renewed. More about Home-Start The charity began over 20 years ago in Richmond upon Thames. In October 2016 its service expanded to the Kingston borough, including Berrylands, Chessington, Coombe, Hook Rise, Norbiton, Surbiton, Tolworth and in April 2017 it merged with Home-Start Hounslow. Last year around 700 local children in 400 families were supported by the charity. They have been affected with issues such as post-natal depression, disability, isolation, poor housing and bereavement. Are you interested in becoming a volunteer? Contactless Payment; Is it Safe? Contactless payment is an increasingly popular method of payment with at least one in three card payments in the UK being made using contactless technology. Myths abound regarding the security of this payment system. Here we look at the process and some tips on using it safely. Contactless payment uses a wireless chip containing the user’s payment card details which is embedded in a mobile phone or on a bank payment card. This enables users to make payments of up to £30 at stores, cafes and other outlets simply by passing their smartphone or contactless card a few centimetres from a suitable card reader.

Kingston Rotary Club are active in our local & international communities with various projects and listed below are two that you could help support by donating items.

Emergency Toiletries in Bags Many patients arrive in the hospital without much notice and therefore have not had time to pack a bag including essential toiletries for overnight stays. Kingston Rotary help by filling drawstring bags to provide an emergency pack to tide someone over for a night or two. Each bag contains a small bottle of shampoo, a small bottle of shower gel, deodorant or body spray (male or female), face cloth, toothbrush, toothpaste and a comb. We attach a label to each bag “Please accept this gift from Kingston Rotary Club who support their local community with various projects”. We have donated several bags to Kingston Hospital’s Born Too Soon charity for the use of new mothers and we have also donated several bags to Refugee Action Kingston. This is an ongoing project and we would ask for your help in donating any other the above items so that we can fill more bags. Vision Aid We collect any unwanted glasses that are no longer needed and we arrange for these to be sent to a Vision Aid recycling centre. They recycle the donated second-hand glasses for their precious metal content (gold frames) and any retro or vintage glasses are sold. They also recycle plastic glasses. The income generated through the recycling process enables them to deliver sustainable eye care services in Africa. They do this by establishing Vision Centres so that, there are locally based

eye care services to provide affordable eye tests and new glasses to all patients regardless of circumstance. Training local eye care workers so that, there are skilled professionals to deliver quality eye care services at all times. Delivering eye care services to remote and isolated communities so that, they can reach the poorest and most vulnerable people. Senior Citizens Film Shows Many of our senior citizens have difficulty in getting out to enjoy the many things that most of us take for granted. Each year Kingston Rotary has a programme of film shows for the senior citizens when Club members pick them up, take them to the show and return them home. Refreshments are provided before the film and ends with a fun raffle. We would also like to know of any senior citizens that you feel would benefit from our Senior Citizens Film shows. Myth busters for back pain: True or False

1. Sitting upright has been shown to prevent back pain - False: Contrary to popular belief sitting upright has not been shown to reduce your chance of back pain nor has it been shown to speed up recovery of back pain. So sit whatever way is comfortable for you. 2. People with no back pain can have disc bulges and arthritis - True: When we scan people with NO PAIN they can have the same or similar scan findings as people with back pain. Therefore lots of what we see on scans is just normal changes to the spine. However these normal changes are often wrongly blamed as the sole cause of one’s pain. 3. The spine or pelvis can go out of alignment - False: The spine is incredibly strong and stable and it does not just go out of alignment. Having a belief that your spine can go out of alignment is likely to slow down your recovery. 4. Bending is bad for the back - False: Backs are designed to bend and twist. There is a strong belief in today’s society that backs should be kept straight, this belief is wrong. Avoiding bending might actually make you more susceptible to back pain. After spraining your ankle it is important to get back

walking, jogging and moving normally with time. The back is no different. It is important to build up slowly but ultimately backs like bending. 5. Pain is a damage indicator - False: Pain is not a damage detector, lots of pain does not mean lots of damage and vice versa. Pain is a protective feeling that is influenced by many factors such as general health, hormones, immune system, mood, physical fitness, beliefs, stress and more. Back pain can be highly distressing but the volume of pain one has does not necessarily mean that it is equal to changes in their tissues. 6. Exercise and activity can reduce and prevent back pain - True: Exercise is shown to be very helpful for tackling back pain and it is also the most effective strategy to prevent future episodes of back pain. Start slowly and build up the duration and intensity over time. No one type of exercise is more effective than another, pick an exercise that you enjoy and maintain it into the long-term. Wendy Winfield retrospective exhibition

Wendy Winfield is a Kingston artist; for the past 25 years she has devoted her life to painting and drawing. In April she will be holding a retrospective exhibition where a selection of her vibrant and colourful paintings, and bold charcoal drawings will be on show. Now in her eighties and still painting and drawing, Wendy Winfield is an alumna of Kingston. She studied at the Kingston School of Art in the ‘50s and then studied the history of modern art under the aegis of the Courtauld Institute. Following a successful career in advertising, teaching, and book illustration, not to mention rearing three children in the depths of the country in a cottage with no heat or running water, she returned to Kingston.

Her open weekends are 14/15 and 21/22 April, 11am to 6pm at 15B Crescent Road, Kingston Upon Thames, KT2 7RD. Prices range between £20 and £1500. If you miss these two weekends Wendy will also be taking part in KAOS Open Studios on the weekend of 16/17 June. The Cooking Corner Fillet steak with lemon spinach Serves 2 This recipe takes very little time. While you fry the steak, you cook the spinach in the wok. Within 10 minutes you can serve a delicious meal. Ingredients: • 2 x 125g fillet steak • 400g fresh spinach, washed • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • Grated zest of half a lemon • 30g almonds, roughly chopped • Himalayan salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 tbsp olive oil.

• Add the spinach bit by bit and stir-fry untill it has reduced. • Stir in the lemon rind, salt and pepper to taste and stir-fry for another minute. • Sprinkle with the chopped almonds. • Serve the steak on heated plates with the spinach on the side.

Method: • Dry the fillet steak with kitchen towel, sprinkle with pepper and fry in a medium frying pan, on a medium heat until pink. • Heat a little olive oil in a wok, add the crushed garlic and fry for 30 seconds.

HEALTH & WELLBEING Yoga for the Soul Time passes and the sap rises, colour returns as we find ourselves in the midst of pink and white blossom, and we all emerge from the hibernation of winter. Like the blooming flowers and the pell-mell greens, we too look to the light and warmer and longer days. Humans too belong to nature, we participate in the cycle of life, and its ebbs and flows. And like the flowers we may feel like we flourish in the light. The connection between us and nature is echoed in yoga. Yoga is often translated as union. It is normally understood to be union between breath and body, allowing the practitioner to feel whole. Another way to explain it, is that feeling after class when you feel relaxed, peaceful and renewed. The most common way to experience this feeling is in love. What if we could feel love more of the time? A great thinker and educator, Satish Kumar, who has followed Gandhi’s principles all his life, has amended one of Gandhi’s famous quotes. He says- Be the love you wish to see in the world. Gandhi famously said - Be the change you wish to see in the world. Be the love you wish to see in the world can be applied to all aspects of life - but let’s use yoga as an illustration. We can practice love towards ourselves: ‘I’m awesome for coming to yoga tonight’ rather than ‘I haven’t been to yoga for months’. Or ‘I’m working to make my body more flexible and strong’ rather than ‘I am so stiff and can’t get anywhere near my toes’. Then we extend this love to other people,

Spring Cleaning This time of year is ideal for fresh starts, including when it comes to your home – the weather’s starting to allow for more outdoor jobs like window cleaning and gardening; we can start to prepare for warmer temperatures and keep things in shape, for example, keeping bugs at bay and keeping homes airy and comfortable. Below are just a few ideas on how to get a handle on most areas of the house.

Wipe-downs Remove dust in any corners/surfaces first, using a hand-held hoover or one of the more adaptable attachments, even a microfibre cloth could do the job. Tackle stubborn grime on surfaces, particularly in kitchens using a solvent-free degreaser. Ideally you should test new products on a small area of the surface before spraying all over. Carpet cleaning Get a good carpet shampoo or at least some shake and vac and give them a freshen up. Regular hoovering and cleaning this time of year is ideal for removing allergens such as pollen as well. Synthetic carpets and rugs with waterproof backings can be deepcleaned at home without any issues, however rugs without backings, may require you to call in a professional. Upholstery and furnishings Prior to vacuuming and dusting, take any cushions outside and lightly beat them by hand to extract any dust or crumbs. If you spot any stains, make sure you check any labels to find out if your cushions are machine-washable/hand-wash only. Remember to give your furniture a good vacuum whilst the cushions are being cleaned as well, as this area doesn’t get exposed very often.

Waxing and polishing If you have a lot of wooden or metal furniture, remember to make sure they are well-kept. Wipe wooden surfaces with a soft, damp cloth and gentle cleaning solution such as some diluted washing up liquid. Apply the wax a little at a time with a rag, allow to dry and then buff with a clean cloth. For metal surfaces or ornaments, a good multi-surface polish will remove any smears or smudges. Window washing With a warm solution of washing up liquid and water, scrub down screens and frames with a brush. For the glass surfaces, you can invest in a good window cleaner and wipe down with a wet sponge, or you can try more homemade remedies such as apple cider vinegar, which will help leave a streak-free shining finish. All you need is 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water, and you can always pour it into a spray bottle for ease when using. There are plenty more jobs you could consider, but keeping on top of simple todos like these will ensure that your home is one of your favourite places to be and invite others into.

GARDENING April Gardening Tips Though April showers may come your way, they bring the flowers that bloom in May, or so we are told from the song. In between the showers one job is best done at this time of year and that is lawn care. Lawn Care Spring is an ideal time to repair or replace your lawn, when the weather is damp and cool, as the lawn is most likely to recover well in these conditions. There are two ways of repairing bare patches in the lawn either by replacing areas with new turf or by reseeding the area. Using turf: Firstly cut out the damaged area of turf using a half moon edging iron to cut a square and then use a spade to lift it out. Lightly fork over the soil in the base of the removed area and replace with a similar sized new turf and then apply a lawn top-dressing into the crevices between the two areas. Remember to firm in the new turf with the back of a spade or rake and then water well. Using seed: repeat the same process as turf to cut out the damaged area and then fork over the remaining soil. Add some compost to bring the soil level up to the same height as the surrounding area and then carefully rake the soil to a fine tilth. Scatter the grass seed over the base at a rate of 15-25g per sq m, or as per the instructions on the packet or by the supplier. Cover the seed with a fine layer of top soil and then water well. Sometimes the damaged patches are not in the middle of a lawn but are around the edge of paths or borders. The best way to repair lawn edges is to dig out the damaged area with square cuts on three sides and prepare the base as above. Using the turf that you have dug out turn this through 180Â° and replace it so that the cut edge aligns with the lawn edge and the damaged edge is facing inwards. Then repair the damaged patch with either of the methods mentioned above. 19

Minor bumps and hollows usually show up when mowing the lawn and these can also be levelled out by the following method. Cut through the uneven patch with an H-shaped incision and peel back the turf. Fork over the base and either remove excess soil or add new top soil to raise the level. Firm down the soil and make sure the patch is level before replacing the turf. Check the lawn is level and adjust again if necessary. Finally water well and again on a regular basis until the new turves have taken and all the grass is growing at the same rate. Do not use a lawn mower over the repaired edges for at least two weeks for turves or a month for reseeded areas to allow the new grass to bed in and get a good root system. Has there been improvement or is it still a struggle? Has your son or daughter resisted help, or is it just a matter of organisation? Now is the time to go for it if you think there’s an issue; after all13 weeks and the school year is over! Set an achievable target for how to move on and stick to it. Over breakfast - or tea time snack: Reading practice If your son really won’t pick up a book and read despite the fact that he can, what about finding a short funny bit in the paper every day to share? There’s usually something that’s more light-hearted or engaging (it’s your job to find it though!) Tables/mental maths (at breakfast)) what about the puzzle page in the paper with the quick maths agility puzzles? Just the easy one every day (even 3 a week) is good for anyone who sort of knows their tables and number facts. Time yourselves.

Use coloured felt tips, or gel pens - makes it more rewarding, so long as it’s neat-ish! Q: We’ve not been getting on for some time, but now I’ve met someone else my partner is furious and says he’ll leave me without a penny. We’ve lived together for over 15 years in the house he owned before we met. He told me he was putting it into our joint names when our first child was born 13 years ago, but I’m not sure if he actually did. I know I’m a common law wife but can you tell me if leaving for someone else is going to reduce what I’m entitled to? My partner works in IT and earns a good salary but I only work part-time in a local care home. Janie, New Malden

A: The fact that you have someone else is not going to affect anything financially and you’re not married so it doesn’t count as adultery. But I’m afraid there’s no such thing as a common law marriage in England and Wales, it’s nothing but a myth. So you don’t have any of the rights of a married woman, ie no right to any of your partner’s property or pension, and no right to any maintenance for yourself. If your children remain living with you, their father will be liable to pay maintenance for them at the rate set by the Child Maintenance Service. I hope your partner will calm down and be able to agree to give you more but if not, you could make a Schedule 1 application to the family court to be able to stay in your home – but you would probably have to leave once your children are 18. You may also be able to make a TOLATA claim, particularly if the house is in joint names. But this is not family law and it’s a lot more complicated. So whilst I normally encourage my clients in divorce or children cases to save money on legal fees by doing a lot of the paperwork themselves, I cannot advise that in your case. I suggest you find a good family law solicitor and ask them how many TOLATA cases they have done: not all solicitors do these and you want to make sure that yours has experience of them.

Make it count Now is the time to make some memories - spend a day with the family at a wax museum, soak up some culture at the best galleries in London or visit a farm. Why not take a hike with friends or plan a road trip around the country over any upcoming long weekends/time off work? The possibilities are endless! You can go simple with an afternoon picnicking, playing family football or having a friendly tennis match at the park - or you can really get your family photo album filled with some more expansive short breaks, theme park visits or perhaps heading to your local pick-your-own fruits and vegetables allotment?

There are plenty of options to consider, which is why this time of year is perfect; perfect for enjoying yourself and getting a headstart on holiday fun and the perfect time to take on new DIY projects, have a thorough spring clean or take part in/visit your nearest boot sale. You’ll still have to plan around those pesky April showers from time to time, but there is no better time to start whatever project or day out you’ve been holding off on over the winter period. The struggle is real… It isn’t 100% fun times and good weather of course, if you’re anything like me, this is when you gradually start feeling a bit run down. This is the time of year when nature attacks those vulnerable to the biggest springtime enemy: pollen! Fortunately, this isn’t the case for everyone, but unfortunately, it can actually affect anyone later on in life. Late-onset allergies are actually more common than you think, and I can vouch for this, as I never used to suffer or be aware of any allergies until a few years ago - now I can barely function!

There is no better time than the present, or even prior to now, to start taking your antihistamines (either tablet form or nasal sprays etc) if this affects you too. In my experience, symptoms tend to creep in for me around late April to late July and it’s actually advised to take them before the symptoms begin to get the best results. It’s also a good idea to take them before bed to avoid some of the drowsiness that can accompany them. Some suggest it may be worth actually switching up medications after 4-6 weeks, as you can become a little desensitized to what’s in them - then switching back after 2 weeks or so. I have yet to try this so can’t guarantee it works, but it could be worth a go. Others suggest more natural medicines that contain essential oils like peppermint and lavender. Again, I have some experimenting to do this year, as I don’t want a repeat of spring 2017… Tips from a fellow sufferer:

home - don’t skimp on showers either. If you can, keep an eye on the weather reports or get a pollen count app to control your outdoor habits a little more, though I hope this doesn’t mean you become a hermit like me and barely leave the house for the next few months! Other tips I’ve heard about and tried myself, which I think can improve things are washing your bedding regularly, hoovering a little more consistently, eating omega 3-rich foods and taking vitamin C supplements. When in doubt, do the obvious to ease the symptoms after they’ve begun: stock up your medicines, keep things clean, use eye drops and buy plenty of tissues! I recommend balsam tissues to avoid getting a sore nose, and if this fails, I rub a little bit of cocoa butter vaseline around my nostrils - this may potentially trap allergens before they’re inhaled and will soothe any soreness/ chapped skin.

I do recommend keeping your windows closed as often as possible and keeping your AC or a humidifier up to scratch to help with symptoms, especially if they keep you from sleeping. It’s also a good idea to wear sunglasses often when outside to protect your eyes and change clothing when you get

Hayfever or allergic Rhinitis is definitely unpleasant, and seems to last forever, but hopefully with some help and maintenance, this year we’ll be a lot more equipped to handle it. The important thing is that you try not to let it affect your life too much and you’re still able to enjoy the whole of 2018. Good luck! Enjoy the Spring season everyone.

Help to Buy- How does it work? With a Help to Buy: Equity Loan, the Government lends you up to 20% of the cost of your newly built home, so you’ll only need a minimum of 5% cash deposit and then a 75% mortgage to make up the rest.

What are the advantages of using Help to Buy? Compared to a normal purchase with 5% deposit, the 20% equity loan is recognised as 25% deposit, so you are able to obtain a lower mortgage rate. From February 2016 the Government increased the upper limit for the equity loan, giving new home-buyers in Greater London 20% to 40%. The maximum you can receive is £3,000. When you are close to buying your first home, you will need to instruct your solicitor or conveyancer to apply for the bonus. How much can I borrow? The maximum any lender will currently lend is around 4.5 times income, this could be joint income, however lenders do work on more complex affordability models these days, so this is estimated. Existing commitments will need to be factored in, such as loans, cards, car payments, student loans, etc. and the lender will also take the

The Willow Finally – delicious, quality dining without the guilt! Based in Kingston, The Willow is a godsend for those who want to be a little more conscious of what they’re eating, but who aren’t looking to sacrifice mouthwatering flavours and substance. They pride themselves on using locally sourced, ‘real’ food that provides serious nutritional benefits. The Willow offers a delectable dining experience within a comfortable and positive atmosphere. Besides quality cuts of meat and fish, there are plenty of vegetarian, vegan, gluten/dairy-free options available, as well as a bar serving organic, low-sulphite wines & spirits. And, with seven different options of gluten-free craft beer on tap, there’s definitely something for everyone! For starters, we sampled the stunning Grilled Galician Octopus with Smoky Lime Chimichurri and the Sweet Potato Bravas explosions of flavour! This was paired with wine and followed by the exquisite Spiced Salmon, Marinated Wild Boar and the 30 Day Dry-Aged Grass-Fed Ribeye Steak. All was cooked to perfection, beautifully presented and well seasoned. We were thoroughly satisfied, but we still made room for dessert – Flourless Chocolate Cake with Banana Icecream; completely
