Not only has 2017 rolled around with the promise of great local events over the next month, but soon enough the IYAF festival will be making a comeback, as well as the many beer festivals, marathons and regattas during the Summer season. For the time being, we do get to celebrate Valentine’s Day and shower each other with presents and loving gestures - AND eat our weight in pancakes on Shrove Tuesday! In spirit of Valentine’s Day, we have lots of ideas and advice on how to show your loved ones you care, not to mention some fabulous places to spend it at, so don’t miss our local events section and this month’s Special Feature. We have been incredibly busy since the holidays ended! This is due in large part to our increasingly popular Omni Local Business Networking meetings. We now have 11 live groups meeting every fortnight from Surrey to Central London - and even more locations on the way! If you’re interested in meeting new people, making new clients and sharing your business with the local community, have a look at our website to see which meetings are coming up in your area. Visit www. omnilocalbusinessnetworking.com for all you need to know. To conclude for this month, we’d like to thank everyone who contributed to this edition. We would also like to note that we have updated our distribution in order to deliver Omni Local magazines to various public places and establishments in and around the Kingston area, instead of door-to-door.

LOCAL BUSINESS
This month we are talking to Justine Elton, fashion entrepreneur and owner of the brand new Sartorial Boutique.
Supplied by: Justine Elton - Sartorial Boutique
Q1: Hi Justine, could you please tell our readers a little bit about Sartorial? A1: Sartorial has evolved into a Boutique & Gift shop for the local community, plus new customers from as far as Surbiton, Wimbledon & Hampton Court. I have gained numerous repeat customers by listening to what residents need from a local Boutique and Gift shop while I still offer new ideas and something they can’t necessary get in Kingston town centre at an affordable price – plus convenient, stress free shopping. Q2: How long have you been in this line of business now? A2: My official opening day was 19th March 2016, however I have been a Personal Fashion Stylist for a few years.
men & women; even small children love it as the Boutique is colourful and there’s so much to see.
Q3: Wonderful! So what products do you have to offer?
Q6: Do you have any special offers/ promotions on at the moment?
A3: I sell a wide selection of unique gifts and cards as well as clothing, accessories & jewellery. I am also a Personal Fashion Stylist for men & women; I carry out wardrobe reviews for those who would like to re-vamp their wardrobe. If we discover a personal shopping trip will help, I can help choose items for any budget. I also arrange and host colour analysis parties or one on one sessions.
A6: I have a loyalty card for all customers, with a 10% discount applied on the 5th purchase. Once you’ve filled up the card, you get a new one… simple. A few of my repeat customers are on their 3rd card already! Q7: Do you have any advice for those looking to get into a similar line of work? A7: Just DO IT! Don’t make excuses like I did initially, if you want it bad enough you WILL make it happen, though it’s definitely advisable to do extensive research and make sure you choose the best location for the best rent available. If you need advice, don’t be afraid to ask those who’ve got experience; no question is a stupid one, we all have to start somewhere. Treat your customers well and offer them good quality, affordable products.
Q4: What inspired you to start up your business? A4: When I was about 17 I said “I will have a fashion boutique and gift shop when I’m about 40” well…. I started putting wheels in motion in 2013 and here I am at 41, I’ve fulfilled my dream! I’ve always had a passion for fashion, studied and taken courses, but to own and run a fashion boutique was my ultimate goal.
For more information, please visit SartorialJCE.com or pay a visit to the boutique at 50 Coombe Road, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey KT2 7AF.
Q5: What is your usual clientele? A5: Literally ALL ages and types of people,

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY
THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: CHARITY Katy Spragg
Understanding Dementia Education on the subject of Dementia is vital if dementia friendly communities are to be created. It is my experience that education helps people living with Dementia continue to live a fulfilling life and gives family members, and friends, the skills to plan ahead. Dementia is an umbrella term. There are over 100 different types of Dementia, the most common and well known being Alzheimers. In the early stages, it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish Alzheimer’s from forgetfulness which can be seen as part of the normal ageing process. Everyone with Alzheimer’s will experience symptoms in their own way, but certain changes are characteristic of the disease. • Memory loss – It is the short term memory that is affected eg: forgetting a close friend’s name or where they have put the keys • Challenge completing everyday - familiar tasks such as getting dressed, preparing a meal or finding the way to the paper shop
help you and your loved one along this journey. People living with dementia can still live a fulfilling life and their caregivers have a wealth of support to tap into in the Richmond Borough:Golden Memory Club, Hampton Hill – 020 3893 0010
• Withdrawal from social interaction. • Confusion, depression, suspicions, fear and anxiety – all as a result of the changes to the brain. Alzheimer’s tends to develop over several years. It is not always obvious to begin with and symptoms can be subtle and overlap with other illnesses such as depression. This is not only scary for the person going through it but also for family members and friends who are noticing the changes and more often than not have no idea how to react. The first and most important thing to do is to get a diagnosis and rule out any other illness. Then to understand that there are behaviours that can we can use to make life a little easier for everyone involved.
Greenwood Centre, Hampton Hill – 020 8979 9662 Homelink, Whitton – 020 8255 1992 These are just a few of the organisations that provide help, advice and respite. For more information contact any of the organisations above or the London Borough of Richmond Adult Services. Please join us fortnightly on Wednesdays at the Golden Memories Cafe, commencing 1st February onwards. (More details in the Local Events section)

Kingston Local Wins FullyFunded Season of Racing for 2017
Supplied by: Crystal Law
Bond was born and raised in Kingston. Just like most boys, he had an interest in cars from an early age, and always wanted to be a racing driver in his teens. It was when his father bought a Mitsubishi Evolution 6 that he began to get a feel for speed and consequently began karting and track days in his own car. Bond started his own YouTube channel in early 2016 called ‘PerformanceCars’, where he reviews cars, attend events, trackdays, product reviews and weekly vlogs with one of his many cars. Bond entered the 2016 want2race competition after seeing one of their banners at a local kart track. The competition consists of three stages: karts, cars and finals.
etc. He will be attending 8 races at various locations in the UK. He aims to do well in 2017 Ginetta GRDC Championship and move on to the next level the following year. He can safely say that this is a life changing experience and prize.
The first stage is karting which is a 30 minute race that is assessed by the track manager who reports back to want2race.
Photos provided by Crystal Law Websites: www.performancecars.co Facebook: @PerformanceCars2.0 Twitter: @Perf0rmanceCars Instagram: @PerformanceCars2.0 Youtube: www.youtube.com/c/PerformanceCarsChannel
Once successful, they move on to stage 2 where competitors get a chance to drive the Ginetta G40 race car with an instructor. This is a chance for the judges to see the competitors being in control of a race car, their racing lines and ability to listen to instructions. From stage 2, around 100 hopefuls make it through to the pre-finals where they are pushed further in the race cars by the professional instructors.
To find out more information about the competition, visit: www.want2race.co.uk/competition
Only 25 drivers make it to the grand final that consists of a nail biting head-to-head shootout for the best 12 drivers. And to makes things tricky, the layout that drivers were getting used to was changed so it created a level playing field for the grand final. Despite many other very good drivers and the aforementioned head-to-head shootout in the final, Bond stood out and was crowned 2016 champion. He now has a fully funded season in the 2017 Ginetta GRDC Championship which includes the ARDS test, suit, helmet, HANS device, fuel, mechanics

The Weir Archer AcademyCreating the Paralympians of tomorrow
LOCAL CHARITY
THIS MONTH’S CHARITY Supplied by: Scott Mills
Find us on: Facebook: Weir Archer Family and Friends or our Website: weir-archer-academy.com On one extremely hot and humid summers evening in the Chinese capital of Beijing back in 2008, Para-athletics was about to change forever. Britain’s David Weir CBE had just won his second Paralympic gold, adding to his already impressive collection of gold, silver and bronze medals from that very same week. gone from local meets to achieving world records and podium finishes in the last three years.
However, after seeing the likes of Australia and Canada with almost double the amount of wheelchair athletes competing than that of Great Britain, it was then that Weir knew there needed to be a change. Following Beijing, both Weir and his coach Jenny Archer MBE decided that after the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, the pair would open their own academy to provide opportunities for those with a disability to get involved in sport. Aiming to create a centre of excellence for disabled athletes, whilst working very closely with the academy’s partners to provide access to other sports and much improved facilities, the Weir Archer Academy was formed as a registered charity and athletics club in April 2013. Since then many of the clubs athletes who have joined, have excelled and the people of the local communities have also benefitted. From helping the likes of the Kingston Borough and raising money at charity events to winning gold medals on the international stage at the IPC European Championships and competing at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio, the academy has gone from strength to strength. Training every morning in Richmond Park with track sessions at Kingsmeadow on Monday and Wednesday nights, the academy’s junior and senior athletes have
9
However, it wasn’t the academy’s Team GB athlete Mo Jomni winning a European gold or Weir breaking Sir Roger Bannister’s four-minute mile record that has been coach Jenny Archer’s standout moment for the academy. It was their charity work that helped to raise over £100 for the Poppy Legion Appeal to pay their respects to those who fought to give us a better tomorrow. Although the academy experienced several successes between 2013 and 2015 that included two IPC World Championship silver medals and one bronze, two gold and bronze medals at the European Championships and one gold Commonwealth Games medal, their biggest successes came in 2016.
www.omnilocal.co.uk • Edition 49
Just three months into the season, Weir managed to set a new World Record when he raced in the EDP Lisbon Half-Marathon recording a time of 00:42:23. Also on the international stage during the IPC European Championships in Grosseto, David Weir CBE, Mickey Bushell MBE and Mo Jomni managed to record six golds, two silvers and two bronze medals between them. The trio also managed to be selected for Team GB’s 2016 Paralympic squad alongside the club’s F32 Club Thrower Abbie Hunnisett and whilst the Paralympics may not have gone as planned for these high-achieving and highly-aspiring athletes, they all managed to make the finals in some of their events with Hunnisett, finishing her event in an amazing fourth place. The Academy’s junior athletes were also progressing through the season making some exceptional achievements along the way. While Eden Rainbow-Cooper and Jamie Edwards won medals for Team GB at the Paralympic School Games in Brazil, they also both managed to make progress through British Athletics’ schemes for the country’s future Paralympians. Rainbow-Cooper also managed to excel at several Diamond League meetings in Switzerland where she competed against some of the world’s best wheelchair athletes, winning even more medals along the way. As the season neared its closing stages, many of the Academy’s athletes had also started to become recognised for all of their successes and hard-work throughout the 2016 season. Whilst Weir, Bushell, Jomni and Hunnisett were all selected for the 2016-17 Paralympic World Class Performance Programme ahead of the 2017 World Championships in London, [John] Smith, Labrooy, Sheik and [Will] Smith were also placed on one of British Athletics’ programmes.
Edwards receiving the Male Achiever of the Year award from the Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership, the academy didn’t stop there. There was also an Eileen Gray Award to be given by the Kingston Borough Council to a coach or athlete that had inspired, motivated and helped others to achieve their goals. Sometimes sacrificing her free-time to help and be there for her athletes and train them to an exceptional standard no matter whether it is rain, snow or shine in the early hours of the morning, it was great to see Jenny Archer MBE get some recognition for the amazing work she has done in athletics. Whilst the academy continues to work closely with local schools alongside training and providing athlete and coaching support across the country, it has been the generous public donations that have helped over 10 of our athletes to be put on world class Paralympic performance programmes. If you would like to make a donation to help provide equipment, facilities and training to develop future Paralympians, please feel free to contact us today!
This great year was also capped with plenty of personal awards as well. With Morgan Woods winning the Herald Community Sports Star in Worthing, Eden Rainbow-Cooper claiming the Michael Austin Harlick award in Hampshire and Jamie

Purple4Polio For over 30 years, Rotary and its members have been committed to eradicating polio across the world. The amount of polioendemic countries has dropped from 125 to just three, with over 2.5 billion children receiving vaccinations thanks to the help of Rotary. This January several of our Rotarian members will be travelling to India to join in National Immunisation Days where they will be participating in the vaccination of hundreds of children. Polio cases are now at the lowest ever level as only 35 new cases were reported in 2016 and it is hoped that 2017 will see the end of Polio. The Smallpox disease has been eradicated and thanks to Rotary’s End Polio Now project, the Polio disease will be the second. With eradication now closer than ever, Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland’s latest campaign, Purple4Polio, is designed to unite communities to engage in activities as part of the final push to eradicate polio for good. The campaign ties in with the 100 year anniversary of The Rotary Foundation, Rotary’s own and only charity, which has played a key role in making polio eradication become close to a reality, along with hundreds of other projects both in Great Britain and Ireland and overseas.
11
The purple crocus is a symbol of Rotary’s worldwide campaign to eradicate polio, with its colour representing the purple dye used to mark the finger of a child who has been immunised. It’s time to get your green fingers at the ready because one strand of the Purple4Polio campaign is an exciting partnership between Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland and the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). The partnership will allow Rotary clubs to join forces with the RHS’s community-based Bloom Groups and work in tandem to bring people together, transform public spaces to brighten up the local area and promote health and wellbeing by planting 6 million crocus corms. If you would like to help your local community, why not think about joining our Rotary Club? Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day for our generation has always been quite a commercialised holiday, even more so than Christmas in some senses, but where did it actually come from? What is the need for all the chocolate and flower buying this time of year and why is it such a widely celebrated special occasion?
LOCAL HISTORY Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
Years and years ago it would probably be safe to assume that people weren’t just showering loved ones in goodies and going out for fancy dinners at busy restaurants… so what was the norm? The history of Valentine’s Day has become a bit of a mystery. We all know it’s a day of love, and that it contains remnants of both Ancient Roman and Christian traditions, but who was Saint Valentine?
courageous person who inspired people to be a little more loving.
There is a legend stating that Valentine was a priest who served in Rome during the 3rd century. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those married and with children, he outlawed marriage for young men. When Valentine heard of this injustice, he defied Claudius and proceeded to perform secret marriages for young lovers, which ultimately led to him being sentenced to execution. Another story suggests that Valentine was executed for helping Christians escape harsh Roman prisons. There is also a story that tells of an imprisoned Valentine sending the first “Valentine” greeting himself, after he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. He allegedly signed the letter, “from your Valentine” which is an expression still used to this day. The truth behind the special occasion is still up for debate, but all stories seem to show the Saint as a romantic, empathetic and
13
Valentines greetings go back as far as the Middle Ages, however written greetings didn’t appear until after 1400. The oldest known Valentine was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, after he was captured at the Battle of Agincourt, and his wife was imprisoned in the Tower of London. You can find the greeting at the British Library in London. We have celebrated Valentine’s Day for years in many different countries, including the US, Australia, France and Mexico. It became a popular celebration in Britain in the 17th century, and by the 18th it was common for friends and lovers to exchange gifts and share their affections through the written word. From 1900, printed greetings cards were exchanged more than written letters, as an easy way for people to express their emotions. Since then, it has grown into a tradition of making people feel special, and though at times people may feel isolated, it comes with the promise of reminder, that our loved ones really do care.

ARTS
Louise Anderson In 2016 I completed Masters of Art with Distinction at Kingston University. During my studies I explored a range of artistic practices; photography, printmaking techniques, intaglio, photoetching, lithography, silk screen printing, Japanese woodblock, linocut, in addition to alternative photographic techniques such as cyanotype. My artistic practice begins with research of an object, a photograph or even phrase that has captured my imagination. However, the physical object has always been instrumental in my inspiration. The final installation for my MA combined using archival and found materials to develop new ideas and work by reinventing and creating new narratives of family histories to then tell my story. Louise Girl, unravelled the history of the female role and identity spanning 159 years. Some of the work was selected and shown in a Graduate Show ran by Goldsmiths at UrbanPhotoFest2016 in the Greenwich Gallery. I have always gathered things since I can remember, my first collection was my Pippa dolls. These were given to me by a lady who worked at Harrods and they were treasured for many years with their different outfits. Then there was the prize collection of folded carrier bags under the bed; thimbles, stamps, photographs, postcards, records, tapes, CDs, shells, pebbles rusty objects, all of which have been cherished and viewed as an object or item of importance and inspiration at some point in my life. Previous projects have used similar methodology. For archival research the Ministry of Work’s ‘Butterfly Type’ Plan I explored the BBC written archives. Whilst ‘Idylls of the Self’ series employed the artist as the artwork, referencing works from contemporary artist Cindy Sherman and the link to the Hogs Mill at the university campus and the work of Sir John Everett Millais. GARDENING
Tips for February
Supplied by: Janet Bacon
Valentine Day is normally associated with roses but you could surprise your love one with a lovely romantic walk through beautiful snowdrops. They are at their peak this month - so here are a few suggestions of places that offer you the chance to really enjoy the first splash of spring cheer. Ickworth House (Suffolk), Kingston Lacey (Dorset), Nymans (West Sussex) or Snowdrop Alley (Exmoor). Frost, Freezing & Snow This month we can expect frost, rain and perhaps even snow, so it is best to take precautions and protect your gardens. Plants in containers are particularly vulnerable to the roots freezing, so protect your plants either by plunging them in a spare piece of ground or if they cannot be moved then put bubble wrap around the pots. If left in position, make sure the pots have good drainage by standing them on bricks or ceramic feet to allow any water to freely drain away. Always purchase frost-proof containers where possible, although more expensive, they prove longer lasting and will help protect your plants. Short spells of mild weather can promote some soft new growth on certain plants which can be protected by covering with fleece jackets (these come in different sizes and are kept in place by a drawstring and toggle to ensure that it fits tightly to the pot). Once covered make sure that you regularly check the soil because the fleece will stop any rain getting through. Heavy snow and ice can cause damage by bending and breaking branches of trees. Multi-stemmed evergreens, such as yews and other conifers, are often the most prone to damage. Heavy snow should be removed gently by tapping the branches with a broom.
when you walk on it the damage occurs. This causes the frozen grass leaves to fracture and ruptures the leaf cells seriously damaging the leaves leaving brown foot prints in the lawn which stay for quite some time although the grass doesn’t suffer long term damage. Snow itself is generally not a problem but a fungal disease can occur once the snow thaws. This will often happen in unusually dense areas of snow, normally where a snowman has spent some time or if you have cleared the path or driveway piling the snow on the lawn. Birds in your Garden The frosty weather stops the birds being able to eat bugs and worms so supplement their diet by hanging fat balls and keep bird feeders topped up. Remember to replace the frozen water in the birdbath. To get in touch, please email j.bacon@ tiscali.co.uk or call 020 8393 7970.

Keeping off the lawn in frosty weather is beneficial, particularly if the lawn is a feature of the garden. Frost by itself doesn’t cause any real damage, it’s only

Romanticise your Home! Not only will you potentially be working out some Spring cleaning plans after the new year began, but Valentine’s Day is also on its way - as this year’s holiday falls on a Tuesday there is a good chance many will be celebrating at home after a long day’s work and saving the fancy dinners for the weekend instead. Why not get ahead on the planning and spruce things up in a more warming and romantic sense? Get your house in order to keep romantic vibes going between you and your partner or simply add a sense of love for the whole family with some comforting and endearing additions like putting more photos out, buying some flowers or even giving the walls a new paint job to make things cosier and more inviting. Alternatively, you can just make the changes to your own room, maybe get yourself some beautiful new curtains with a matching bed set or a new rug? Whatever changes, large or small, you can easily spread some love around the house. For example: Find a new fragrance - There is nothing more welcoming than coming home to the aroma of flowers, baked goods, fresh linens or ocean breezes, and these can be easy to infuse through scented candles, reed diffusers, air fresheners and pot pourri. Or go old school and do some baking on the day to fill the home with the scent of cookies or cinnamon rolls? The easiest way however, is with a room spray or some candles of course, and the different scents available these days are incredibly varied. Just be sure you don’t leave any candles unattended. A vase of flowers - whether they are real or not, having a gorgeous bouquet to look at when you walk in the door or something on the mantelpiece/dinner table to admire

during conversation really does make a difference. Better yet, get some flowers for your other half or for a parent and show them you love them, then find a vase to display them in. Family photos - This is another option you can try as a means of giving a gift, such as a reminiscent collage of the family or all the best times you spent with your spouse. Alternatively, purchase some matching picture frames and spread them around the house with your best photos. You can even buy basic frames and decorate them yourself to make them more personal, or just create a photo album for everyone to look at. Whatever you decide to do, for yourself or for your loved ones, get creative and have a great Valentine’s Day.

Find your Winter Glow
Supplied by: Sienna Jelley
Spring has yet to come around and we still have to don those heavy winter coats and gloves for a little longer, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look great at the same time. There are tons of ways of making the cold season work to your advantage, for example: Keep your skin hydrated Hydration is always important, particularly when the chilly winds start to dry out your skin. Moisturise daily, and invest in a tinted moisturiser if you’re after a hint of that summer glow you haven’t had in a while. It is also important to drink plenty of fluids, as we get a bit forgetful in meeting our 8 glasses of water a day habit this time of year. This is essential for both skin hydration and fighting off viruses. Exfoliate Exfoliating helps to remove all the dirt and dead cells from your skin, so don’t skip it in your daily routine. If you have delicate skin that requires gentler cleaning methods, why not treat yourself to a face mask once a week to open your pores and remove any toxins? You can treat yourself to a spa day or just buy face masks yourself to apply while you’re watching TV or even doing some household chores. Lip Care This is the time of year when lips start chapping a lot and you can get away with more noticeable shades of lipstick, so take care of those lips. Before you start slathering on lip balm and smudge proof lipsticks, give them some exfoliation first. Create a paste 20
using olive oil and sugar in a cup, then apply the mix to your lips with a cotton bud in gentle circular motions to scrub away dead skin for a flawless lipstick finish. This is an easy way to care for your lips using ingredients you may already have in the cupboard! Find your Colour Pallette Dark colours are in this time of year, which means that makeup can go a little heavier for special occasions. Opt for more purple and red hues for a great lip statement and you’ll ditch that “washed out” feeling. For the eyes, go for smoky shadows, blended browns and frosty blues or purples if you’re feeling bold. There is nothing wrong with going a little heavier on the mascara this time of year, as you don’t get that natural sun-kissed glow you’d get in summer and can really make your winter wardrobe ‘pop’. Avoid bright colours when it comes to your clothes, but don’t feel like you can’t bust out a vibrant clutch bag and matching shoes with your little black dress!

What is Love? In 1392 the poet Chaucher linked St Valentine’s day to romantic love by declaring it to be the day birds chose their mate. Things have snowballed somewhat since then with an estimated £1.9 billion spent in 2016 expressing love on this single day in the form of flowers, confectionary, cards and so on. Is this love? If we can’t pull off some amazing scheme that has our sweetheart swooning at the romance of it all on the 14th of Feb will we forever be alone?

Happily, not. The 2013 survey “Enduring Love? Couple Relationships in the 21st Century” found gestures such as flowers and chocolates, less important than the thoughtfulness behind them. Saying “thank you”, making a humble cup of tea to show appreciation or sharing household chores and / or family responsibilities were prized most highly by all participants. Recognition of the time and effort required to complete the everyday mundane tasks which underpin relationships and the smooth running of the household was also highly valued as were surprise gifts and small acts of kindness. All participants identified good communication as important along with open conversations to unburden the stresses and strains of the day.
and contempt (“The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse”) then urgent work is advisable. So a couple’s relationship may look perfect (as evidenced by how they mark Valentine’s day) and yet, in reality, be anything but.
Thoughtfulness and appreciation as aspects of love are reflected in one of the four words the ancient Greeks had for love. Eros is about what we want, about being fulfilled by our lover, possessing them. Less well known is agape which is characterised by the desire to fulfil the beloved. It seems to me this is the love most prized in that 2013 survey.

SPECIAL FEATURE
It’s the Season of Romance
Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
Love is in the air, Spring is on the way and whether you have someone to shower with gifts this month or you’re taking time to appreciate a fresh new year, we hope you’ll spend some time with those you love the most. There are plenty of ways you can celebrate V-Day, as well as any other weekends or days off, with those close to you. Make it Special for Everyone No matter what your situation, it’s great letting someone know you love them and that you’ve been thinking about them. We all want to know that we mean something and nobody enjoys that “alone at a wedding” feeling. Even the small act of getting their favourite chocolates or some flowers will brighten their mood. Some people tend to feel a little left out with the holiday if they aren’t seeing anyone, but who says you can’t express other kinds of love to those you’re close to, be it a friend, relative or a partner?
flowers or even a spa day. Think about your elders who are home alone this Valentine’s Day and how much they’d love a visit over a cup of tea, or going through your old family albums. There are worse ways you can spend the day than with your closest family members, and there is no reason anyone should feel lonely. You don’t have to spend lots of money on everyone you love either, just the gesture of a loving greeting card or perhaps baking some heart shaped cookies will bring a smile. If you’re thinking of spoiling that one special someone you consider your soulmate, just make sure you get them something that really means something. It truly is the thought that counts. What to do on the Day If you’re unable to free yourself up on the day, perhaps due to work or conflicting events, you can still make a gesture. Send your loved one(s) a card or use the web to send them flowers, a personalised photo canvas or something sweet. A nice idea might be to insert movie/theatre/concert tickets into a valentines card for them as your way of saying, “Although I can’t see you on the day, we’ll be celebrating soon!”
Take your best friend on a great date night, or surprise a parent/grandparent with some 22

attending someone’s big day? Whatever your plans are personally, its a given that a lot of people will be thinking about wedding bells. When all your friends and family members seem to be getting married, sometimes this can bring you down a little, but the important thing is that you don’t let it affect your happiness for them and their situation. Remember that everything happens as it should and at the very least, you get to celebrate with your loved ones – not to mention you have an excuse to get yourself a stunning outfit and possibly enjoy a dance with your other half at the reception.
There are also sites for special days out like and Red Letter Days or money savers like Groupon, where you can book them, or the both of you a fun day out or a nice dinner somewhere extravagant. If you are lucky to spend the day, or at least the evening with your Valentine, you don’t necessarily have to check the sofa cushions for extra change to make it special. We haven’t long said goodbye to Christmas and if you’re still catching up, showering someone in gifts and going uptown for the whole day may seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. If anyone’s ever taken the time to make you a nice dinner of all your favourites or set up a picnic in the park for you, you’ll know what a great way it is to enjoy the occasion together. When planned properly it’s not only thoughtful and special but it could be a lot cheaper than taking them for dinner and a musical in Central London. It also gives you the opportunity to talk about your relationship, share some memories and plan more great adventures together, without interruptions or feeling too exposed in a loud, busy restaurant. Wedding Fever You may be hearing a lot of Wedding talk this time of year, whether its because of those New Year proposals and all the planning throughout the year, or people are popping the question this Valentine’s Day – or, maybe now that Spring is on the horizon, you’ll be 23
If you’re currently planning a wedding yourself, there is no doubt you’re incredibly scattered right now, but try not to let yourself feel too burdened. Get help from friends, family, even professionals. You’ll be surprised how much easier things can be for you if you delegate certain tasks. Even if they’re simple jobs, it can cut the hours down, such as handling party favours, arranging centerpieces for tables, finding you your something old or something new, even baking the cake! Whatever factor, there is someone who can help. Try not to overdo things any more than you need to or you may end up enjoying the day less... but as its your special day, you should definitely fret the expenses and the pitfalls later!

So, let’s talk about first impressions and how you make a good one: Corporate identity: A powerful and recognisable logo makes your business memorable, so having a good graphic designer is vital.
types of marketing from SEO, Social Media, influential Marketing or Email Campaigns. There is a lot to think about before launching. Most entrepreneurs that have great ideas give up at the first hurdle because of the workload involved. Believe it or not there are CEO’s working ridiculous hours in order to make a living, as they are not willing to invest in professional help.
The website: A great website that shows off your business or portfolio, services or products is important, so get a web designer that really knows his stuff. It’s an absolute must in today’s digital society. Photography: An image can say 1000 words, it has no language barriers and can communicate a powerful message without saying a word. Don’t try to achieve this on your own just by taking photos on your iPhone. You need a professional with the correct high-spec equipment.

Planning This Year’s Holiday We haven’t long experienced 2017 as of yet, however Spring is on the horizon and soon enough, summer’s going to come around! Why not start brainstorming where you’ll be spending the holiday season this year?
TRAVEL Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
Here are some things to consider during the early days of planning: Is it a large increase (or decrease) in temperature that you’re looking for? Perhaps you’re looking for somewhere hot and sunny where you can top up your tan and lay out on the beach? Or, maybe you’ve had enough of the sunshine (unlikely in this country!) and you’re more interested in Arctic temperatures… in which case you’ll probably want to head somewhere further North. Determine whether its fun, relaxation or just some general sight-seeing you are looking for. Maybe there are certain locations you’ve had your mind set on for a while, or even wonders of the world you’ve got to cross
off of your bucket list. A lot of people plan a holiday around rest and rejuvenation and should figure out if they want a seafront hotel, luxury villa or comfortable cabin, so decide which best suits your needs. Search for those early bird deals! Don’t leave it until the last minute to check flights and hotels for your chosen date. There are plenty of hotels that allow you to pay a deposit or pay when you get there, as well as refundable plane tickets in some cases, so do your research and try to scope out the best deals early on. Make sure you start saving as early as possible, as there is nothing worse than running out of money on holiday or coming back to piles of debt. Gather the troops! You may be looking at a holiday with friends, or a couples getaway - but if it’s the whole family you want on board (or abroad!) make sure everyone has committed to your preferred dates/location choice and that everyone else is collecting their change for when the vacation rolls around.

Sartorial Boutique
PLACES TO GO Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
The new Sartorial Boutique on Coombe Road near Norbiton station is run by fashion entrepreneur, Justine Elton and is a wonderful place to find unique and one of a kind gifts, accessories, clothing, cards and jewellery. Greeted by a warm welcome and offered a helping hand when choosing the perfect gift or outfit, the boutique is open to all. “I think it’s important to make people feel welcome in a small Boutique; some of my regulars purely come in to say hello if they’re passing, which I love! I’m not a fan of overbearing sales people so I always let people browse first, but I’m always happy to help when asked.” - Justine Elton. Women’s clothes at Sartorial sell very well, as they are classic, comfortable and stylish, can be accessorised perfectly with a scarf or piece of jewellery in store. At the moment, the men’s range of clothing is limited, but soon to change. As an experienced stylist, Justine often puts outfits together for people in store. Her aim is to live up to the meaning of the word Sartorial: relating to tailoring, clothes or style of dress by encouraging people to dress well i.e. “sartorial elegance”. Residents have actually approached Justine to showcase some of their products on a sale or return basis, which she has been happy to do for people, as long as the products fit well in Sartorial. “My proudest moment was being approached by Kingston Business Awards to enter the ‘Best Start Up Business’ category in my first few months of trading. I was shortlisted as a Finalist and attended the award ceremony in October 2016, which was a great night. To be selected alongside the other candidates was a huge honour. 29
Opening Sartorial is honestly the best thing I’ve ever done and I’m so proud of what I’ve achieved in my first year of trading. It’s definitely not been a walk in the park, but it’s so rewarding and knowing I’m giving something back by helping others too is very important to me. I’d like to say a huge thank you to my loyal customers and their help in attracting new ones. Sartorial won’t survive without local custom, so I would encourage everyone to shop local and support the local businesses you love. I have every faith my business will succeed, but if it doesn’t, at least I can say I did it, rather than saying I wish I had done that!” Justine is currently building an online store, launching in the next few weeks, so please keep an eye on www.Sartorial-JCE.com for updates. Not all of the products in store will be available online straight away so it’s still advisable to visit the Boutique as well and to make use of Justine’s styling services. The LP Partnership The LP Partnership is a holistic business focusing on the Mind, Body and Spirit. I teach a healing modality, hold one to one client sessions, which clears negative beliefs and trauma, that can help with any aspect of our lives. With Synergy, I look at the physical well-being providing food supplements that give our bodies added nutrition to support the physical well-being. We are based in Aldershot, but the business is open in over 29 countries and expanding rapidly with customers and distributors in those areas. The LP Partnership supplies the highestquality supplements in the World, some based on Nobel Prize Winning Research and has a patent pending. All products come with a money back guarantee as well, which means you can try them out with absolutely no risk or concern for your finances. We also have a brand new Purify kit that works on transforming your Microbiome (gut health), which will be released soon. The business model is very attractive, having been founded by Dan Higginson, who was a consultant for Stephen Covey, (known for “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”) and he has ensured the business has solid and trustworthy foundations and a track record with proven success. Our products normally attract those with current health concerns, but they also focus on longevity and enhancing your current well-being, so we encourage everybody, whatever their age or general health, to be using them as well. Many are reluctant to try new products, especially as Synergy is a relatively new brand, but with no risk and our bodies’ general resiliance, we encourage all to try them. Given enough of the right ingredients, it can change a set of different circumstances.

Heart-Shaped Gift Box
DIY Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
Use this for general storage around the house or to present a gift to someone this Valentine’s Day. What you’ll need: Thick card/Cardboard - Glue or double-sided cellotape - A ruler and piece of string/tape measure - Scissors or a craft knife - Decorative wrapping paper/paint Method: 1. Firstly, figure out what box shape you’d like by searching the web. When you have your box in mind, you can either make things easier on yourself and download a net drawing of a heart shaped box, or you can put in the maths and design skills and do it yourself. This isn’t as difficult as it sounds once you realise how many sides it has.
out for the lid. 5. Once you are happy with the method, repeat using your preferred material, such as card or cardboard. Score the lines first if you are using a knife to cut. When using card you can create tabs by cutting inward and folding over the edges of your box walls, gluing them to the heart. Don’t worry if it looks a little unsightly. All you need to do is cover the end product with some card to smooth the sides out.
2. As an example, draw out two hearts on paper or card, making sure one is around 3-5mm bigger than the first but identical in shape (draw around the first one if it’s easier, then add width. You’ll know how much bigger to draw the second heart by the thickness of your cardboard. This width accounts for the space between the box and lid to fasten itself. 3. Measure the perimeter of a heart (this can be done easily with a tape measure or string) and cut four strips of paper to this length, making two of them three times the width of the other two. 4. At a 90 degree angle, fix the wide strips of paper along the edge of the smaller heart with tape to create walls. Repeat again with the thinner strip(s) on your second heart cut-

6. Feel free to add layers for stability, and once you are happy with the end product, you can decorate as you see fit, using wrapping paper, spray paint or even having the kids decorate the box for you. You can also tie a ribbon around the box or decorate with adhesive jewels if you like. Once all glue or paint is dry, you can put whatever you like into the box. Be aware of different weights and keep foodstuffs away from painted/glued areas if possible. Line with some kitchen towel or cake cases otherwise.
