POLICE ADVICE
Supplied by: Alison McWinnie - MET Police
Oh Cupid! Hello Readers! Happy New Year! May 2018 be a fantastic and safe year for you. As we approach Valentines Day, did you know that even romance is not immune to fraud?! So What is Romance Fraud? When you think you’ve met the perfect partner through an online dating website or app, but the other person is using a fake profile to form a relationship with you. They’re using the site to gain your trust and ask you for money or personal information to steal your identity and commit identity fraud. How Can You Protect Yourself? • Avoid giving away too many personal details when dating online. Revealing your full name, date of birth and home address may lead to your identity being stolen.
• Their pictures are too perfect – they may have been stolen from an actor or model. Reverse image search can find photos that have been taken from somewhere else. How it happens
• Never send or receive money or give away your bank details to someone you’ve only met online, no matter how much you trust them or believe their story. • Pick a reputable dating website and use the site’s messaging service. Fraudsters want to quickly switch to social media or texting so there’s no evidence of them asking you for money.
Once a fraudster using a fake dating profile is confident that they’ve won your trust, they tell you about a problem they’re experiencing and ask you to help by sending money. They may have arranged to visit you, but need money to pay for the flight or visa. They may tell you everything has been booked but their ticket has been stolen, and you need to send money quickly to get them on the next flight. Or a family member is ill and they need money for medical treatment.
Spot the signs • You’ve struck up a relationship with someone online; they’re asking a lot of personal questions about you, but they’re not interested in telling you much about themselves.
Once you send them money, the fraudsters will keep coming back and invent new reasons to send them more. How To Report It Do tell Action Fraud, either online www. actionfraud.police.uk or call 0300 123 2040.
• They invent a reason to ask for your help, using the emotional attachment you’ve built with them. Your relationship with them may often depend on you sending money.

COMMUNITY PERSON Creative Youth CEO Phil Hetherington Retires
Supplied by: Charlotte Levy - Creative Youth
After almost eight years with Kingston-based arts charity Creative Youth, Chief Executive Officer Phil Hetherington has now retired from his post. Phil initially joined Creative Youth on secondment from his role as a Senior Manager for British Telecom, heading a team of Project and Programme Managers. But his enthusiasm for both the arts and the charity led to him taking a permanent position. As well as delivering the high-profile annual International Youth Arts Festival, Creative Youth enables young people in Kingston, and surrounding areas, to be involved in innovative, ambitious projects. Chair of the charity, Robin Hutchinson, said: “When Phil joined us from BT, it was great to have his marketing and management experience supporting a young and emerging charity. His decision to stay with Creative Youth to help manage its growth and sustainability has been of the key reasons behind our success.”
“I am excited to have been given the opportunity to lead Creative Youth and the International Youth Arts Festival as CEO into its next period of growth. Over the last 9 years it has become a formidable force in supporting and showcasing the next generation of talented artists at a local, national and international level. As we enter our 10th year a key aim will be to continue to enhance and build upon the charity’s provision for young people and extend its profile and reach. I look forward to marking this milestone with a fantastic Festival during July 2018 which will look to the future and the next 10 years.”
“As we approach our 10th year we have a lot of reasons to be grateful to Phil for his energy, warmth and commitment. I know that everyone involved with the charity wish him the very best in his retirement.” Phil Hetherington said: “The last seven and a half years with the Creative Youth charity have been incredibly special and completely different after 41 years with BT in the corporate sector. I am very proud of all the achievements the charity has made in this time, in particular watching Kingston come alive each year during the International Youth Arts Festival (IYAF).” “I have enjoyed working with, and seeing such talented young people develop and grow in confidence and experience. I will be sad to leave but intend to keep in touch and watch its continued development in the coming years.” Arts manager Louise Coles, who was involved in fundraising for the fledgling Rose Theatre project 15 years ago, will take up the post of Creative Youth CEO as of January 2018. Louise has great experience in the arts with a particular passion for encouraging and supporting young and emerging talent. Louise Coles said:

Rotary is alive and well in the Royal Borough of Kingston, but we think there is a gap in what we are offering – and we believe this breakfast meeting group will fill that gap. This is for people who want to help in the community, have limited time but could manage an hour first thing in the morning once a month. We would love to tell you more about what we do, and see if you would like to be part of it. Kingston Rotary Club raises funds for good causes and delivers benefit into the community, both at home and overseas – as well as enjoying friendship and fun. We meet in the Doubletree Hilton near Kingston Station at 7.45am on the first Thursday of every month and have coffee. So if you are working in Kingston town centre you can still reach the office by 9.00am.

All that is needed is a big heart and enthusiasm. As Patsy Gilbert, one of the leaders, says ‘The Big Sing is everything I love about singing – everyone is encouraged to give it a go, anyone can take part and if the end product is always a bit raucous, Perfect.’

Ruth Blackford
ARTS Supplied by: KAOS
From 23 January – 3 March 2018, The Rose Theatre will be hosting Kingston Characters, an exhibition of unique textile portraits created by local artist and KAOS member, Ruth Blackford. In an explosion of colour, pattern and texture, the foyer of The Rose will be transformed into a charming and idiosyncratic gallery of portraits celebrating Kingston’s wonderful community. Traders, residents, buskers, students and people of prominence are included. The Kingston Characters project arose from a culmination of three factors: Ruth’s love of Kingston and its community, her fascination with people, and her love of textiles. Originally trained in textiles, she worked for many years as a designer of embroidered women’s and children’s wear selling to high street fashion labels both in the UK and abroad. Now her work is more illustrative and figurative, but the love of colour, pattern, texture and fabrics remains strong, and so rather than pens and paints, she harnesses her textiles skills, and uses cloth and stitching to create the portraits. Ruth aims to capture not just a likeness, but also the essence of the personalities – how they present themselves, their expressions, interests and foibles. Fabrics are carefully chosen to do this and painstakingly hand stitched together to form the base, then both hand and machine stitching are used for detail. Each stitch is carefully considered and placed – one tiny stitch just 1mm in the wrong place and the likeness is lost!
13
“I love the Kingston community. When I moved here in 2012 I had got to know more people here in a month than I had done in 16 years in South London. People are generally friendly and helpful, and everyone has a story which I was keen to tell through my portraits. The Kingston Characters project spans a year of work and has led to me meeting some fascinating local people and making some great friends. It has been both an industrious and fun-filled year in Kingston, which I think will be reflected in the exhibition”. Ruth works to commission and more of the stitched portraits, and a variety of her other art and design work can be seen at Ruth’s website, ruthblackford.com.

A Festive Take on Kingston’s History
LOCAL HISTORY Supplied by: Mike Seigel - Kingston Tour Guides
Ten days before Christmas, and as part of KingstonFirst’s festive programme, the Kingston Tour Guides dressed up as important characters from the town’s history and led a special (free!) tour around the Ancient Market Place. Despite bitterly cold weather, up to 60 people attended this “Christmas Pageant” which started outside the Church Gates. A Town Crier introduced each of the characters by reading out an amusing poem. The first was King Athelstan, duly crowned by the Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Julie Pickering, who cheerfully accompanied the characters as they moved through the Market Place. Athelstan regaled the crowd with tales of his military valour and scholarly interests, and how he had become King of All England. Continuing the Saxon theme, he introduced Esther Hammerton, who had survived the collapse of the Saxon Chapel in 1730 to take over her father’s role as sexton, and Eadweard Muybridge, inventor of the zooipraxiscope, with a fascination for the town’s Saxon history. Athelstan then led the group to look at the façade above Jack Wills, pointing out himself and the other royal figures. Queen Anne intervened to take the group round to look at her impressive statue, glistening from the Market House. The Queen briefly described her life, and told how her grandfather, Charles I, had given the town an effective monopoly, by not allowing any town to hold a market within a seven mile radius. Next to speak were Jerry Abershawe, the notorious highwayman, about the thriving
coaching industry in Kingston and the dangers of the road, and Henry Shrubsole, the famous mayor, whose memorial adorns the southern end of the Market Place. There, the Town Crier spoke again, describing the Clattern Bridge and the Ducking Stool, and the Duchess of Clarence told how she had opened the “new” bridge in 1828, and how it has twice been enlarged since. Frank Bentall then talked of the importance of shopping, especially at Christmastime, and spoke of his contribution to the town’s success. King Athelstan brought proceedings full circle by referring to his coronation and pointing towards the Coronation Stone outside the Guildhall. He then morphed into his modern persona of Mike Seigel, Chair of the Kingston Tour Guides, to thank everyone for coming, and the Mayor in turn led hearty thanks to the guides for providing such an interesting and fun entertainment as part of the festive season. If you are interested in learning more about the fascinating history of our town, why not join one of our tours, led by specially trained volunteers? We meet at 11am every Sunday in the summer months outside the church gates in the Ancient Market Place, and on the first Sunday of the winter months. The charge is £5 per adult - or you can arrange a special tour for you and your friends at a time to suit you. For further information or to become a guide yourself, please look at our website www. kingstontourguides.org.uk.

HEALTH & WELLBEING EcoYoga for the Soul “We practice yoga in order to have a healthy and harmonious body, but we also practice yoga to attain peace of mind”, writes Henryk Skolimowski in his book, EcoYoga. He goes on: “If your mind is not at peace following yoga practices, then your yoga is not working as it should for you. Nowadays, in order for you to have peace of mind, it is vital that you establish peace with Mother Earth.” Finding peace in winter can be challenging. But take inspiration from the natural world and hibernate. Rest and dream. Here is some inspiration - a story from the Ancients. The Earth Mother Demeter was desperately seeking her beloved daughter, who was lost. Persephone was the apple of her mother’s eye. Without her, Demeter was bereft and so began an endless winter. No longer would Mother Earth give life and one harvest failed, then another, then another. People starved and eventually Zeus, the King of the Gods, was forced to act. He knew his brother was lonely in the Underworld, a powerful King but unloved. Sweet Persephone, the very fruit of Mother Earth, was irresistible to Hades, who had stolen her to keep in the dark forever. Zeus sent a messenger to demand that her brother release Persephone for the survival of all people. Hades could not refuse - but he forced his captive to eat several red jewel-like seeds from a sweet pomegranate – a bitter trick. When Persephone returned to her mother, their tears of joy sent green shoots bursting forth from the earth, which ripened into a bountiful harvest. But to keep the peace, the Mother of Life sent her daughter back to the King of Death. And so it is that winter follows autumn, as summer follows spring.

LEARNING
School year’s slipping by, is your child doing as well as you’d hoped in maths and English?
Supplied by: Celia Osborne Numberworks’n’words
We all have ambitions for our children. Some just want them to be happy and settled in life, but others dream of seeing their children in top universities ready to take on the world. Of course, we have to be realistic, but most of us have a good idea what our children are capable of. But, are your kids on track for getting there? Could your child be achieving more? If you think your child is just not achieving enough, NumberWorks’nWords is a great place to go to get back on the right track. Using very structured teaching programmes, all designed specifically to link with the National Curriculum in English and maths, we work with children at all levels to help them understand the basics and be the best they can be. Should your child try for grammar school? All the grammar and selective private schools locally have hugely competitive entrance tests. Even if they are top of their class, few get into these schools without extra learning and practice. NumberWorks’nWords is a fantastic place for your child to get just that. Without over drilling or pushing them so hard they hate learning, the tuition at NumberWorks’nWords will help them gain the right skills, in a stimulating environment, to excel in these tests. What age do they start? Children should start working towards them from about the middle of year 4 or the start of year 5. However, if they are younger, NumberWorks’nWords support will get them on the right track faster so there’s less pressure later.
individually with them to ensure it is of a good standard. What if they don’t get into a top school? We’re lucky. All the local secondary schools are pretty good and loads of students leave to go to top universities. But it helps if children are confident at the start of secondary school and near the top of the class. The extra work they have done in maths and English will not be lost – it will help them achieve even more. Do you help children with their GCSEs? Absolutely! We work with children in English and maths right to the day they take their exams, however, if they need a bit of extra help, the earlier they are able to get it the better. Makes sense! Interested? Call Celia on 0208 399 1234 to arrange an assessment and free introductory lesson or drop into 152 Ewell Road, KT6 6HE www.numberworksnwords.co.uk e mail Surbiton@numberworks.com
Is it group tuition? No – each child works individually towards his or her own goals. They are expected to work independently and practise skills on their own, but they are supported by a tutor at all times. Their work is marked 20

Celebrating 5 years of Love Kingston
Supplied by: Tessa Kind - Love Kingston
Over 400 charity and community groups in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames are doing amazing work. They are the glue in our society. These groups often need small yet vital grants so that they can support some of the borough’s most vulnerable residents. Love Kingston was set up five years ago to facilitate this and build a legacy fund for future need and giving. This year Love Kingston is proud to have the support of The Mayor of the Royall Borough of Kingston, Cllr Julie Pickering. Love Kingston has a flagship fundraising day, Love Kingston Day: Wednesday 14th February and we’re inviting everyone in the borough to unite and have fun raising essential funds for borough-wide causes on or around this date.
grant-making programme. Charitable groups that have benefitted to date are Kingston Foodbank, KCAH, Oxygen, LGBT Forum, Hestia, Express CIC, Surrey Save (now Boom CU), The Vintage Banquet and Refugee Action Kingston. Our theme for giving in 2018 is tackling isolation and creating wellbeing. DR JEKYLL & MR HYDE Fri 09 Feb - Sat 17 Feb Adapted by David Edgar | Directed by Kate Saxon | Starring Phil Daniels A Rose Theatre Kingston and Touring Consortium Theatre Company co-production A twisted tale of nerve-jangling horror, this adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic gothic thriller stars Phil Daniels as the extraordinary Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Tensions immediately flare between the sisters, whilst Ida struggles to even recognise her. As the party comes to an end, the family disperse leaving Katherine remembering the pact she made with Ida not to let her suffer into old age… When the family returns, old prejudices and rivalries are forced into the open in a hilariously painful and moving picture of a family in turmoil. AN EVENING WITH SIR MICHAEL PARKINSON Sun 11 Mar, 7.30pm An Evening with Sir Michael Parkinson celebrates the life and career of a man who has interviewed over 2000 of the most important cultural figures of the 20th and 21st centuries. In conversation with his son Mike and showing highlights from the Parkinson archive, An Evening with Sir Michael Parkinson is a unique opportunity to get an intimate, entertaining and informative look at his remarkable journey from a pit village in Yorkshire to the top of those famous stairs whilst reliving the best moments from a show that for many defined their Saturday night.
During one of his audacious experiments trying to separate good from evil, the well-respected Dr Jekyll inadvertently unleashes an alternative personality… the fiendish Mr Hyde. As this sinister figure starts causing terror and havoc in foggy London, Jekyll must race to find a cure for his monstrous alter-ego before it takes over for good. CURTAINS Thu 22 Feb - Sat 17 Mar Written by Stephen Bill | Directed by Lindsay Posner
EXHIBITION: KINGSTON CHARACTERS Tue 23 Jan - Sat 03 Mar Exhibition of stitched textile portraits by local artist Ruth Blackford
Ida’s family is throwing her a tea party for her eighty-sixth birthday. Their efforts to be cheerful and make the event a success verge on the desperate. Ida is racked with pain and feels she has lived too long. As the rather laboured celebrations go on, her third daughter Susan returns unexpectedly after an absence of 25 years.
A quirky and unique collection of stitched textile portraits of Kingston-upon-Thames’ local and colourful characters.

Peter Rabbit
Supplied by: Leanna Carl
This month, Beatrix Potter’s classic tale comes to life on the big screen! The adorable and funny animated movie adaptation follows Peter Rabbit (voiced by carpool karaoke favourite and late-late show host, James Corden) in his feud with Mr McGregor (Domnhall Gleeson). Their rivalry reaches new heights when they begin competing for the affection of an animal-loving next door neighbour (Rose Byrne).
Out on DVD
Peter and his friends (all voiced by an array of stars including Margot Robbie, Daisy Ridley, Matt Lucas and Sia) continue to try to sneak into McGregor’s vegetable garden, much to his annoyance - and cause all kinds of chaos and comedy. This movie is kid-friendly and fun for the whole family - particularly those who enjoy the works of Beatrix Potter and who used to read her stories growing up.
Karim (played by Ali Fazal). When Abdul travels to London in order to present the Queen (played by Academy Award winner Dame Judi Dench) with a gift for her golden jubilee, they begin forming an unexpected bond, much to the disapproval of some of Victoria’s closest acquaintances.
Victoria and Abdul
This is the heartwarming and remarkably true story of Queen Victoria’s unlikely friendship with an Indian clerk named Abdul
27
Hoping that she won’t have to terminate the new friendship, which has brought her so much joy and fascination, she ponders her role and what she has had to sacrifice for her years of service. This movie is intriguing and delightful for all the family, though better suited to those with a genuine interest in Historical figures. The wit and general attitude of Judi’s Victoria, combined with the overall warmth between the two friends is great to see.

Make your Oven Sparkle!
Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
This time of year, your oven may not be looking as ship-shape as usual. Thanks to the Christmas holidays, family get togethers and convenient, yet hearty traybaked dinners, your oven has been through a lot over the Winter months and may need a little more TLC than your usual on-again, off-again wipe downs whenever you get the chance. If this is the case, try not to leave this issue for too long or else you’ll risk permanent discolouring, burnt on residue you can’t scrub away and a less than perfect cooking experience with your appliance. Leaving it a long time can lead to that unpleasant smell and smog that leaks out every time you open it up, where old, burnt food still lingers inside. Hopefully, this isn’t something you have to deal with and you treat your appliances with regular cleans, but if it has become a struggle or the holidays have wreaked havoc on your oven - you can always seek help. If you have the time to tackle the job yourself, you can either invest in a good, strong oven cleaner and allow plenty of time to let it do its job; or, you can go the more natural root. Try sprinkling some baking soda on those tough areas and rubbing it in with a wet cloth or sponge, then letting it rest overnight. Spritz with white vinegar and take a scourer to those last, hard to shift areas. Oven cleaning is not the best job in the world and takes a lot of planning, energy (and possibly getting a takeaway for one night), but it is important. To avoid further issues and lengthy, gruelling work, why not call

SHARING THE LOVE We love what we do & we want to share it with you… So, for the month of February we are offering free management fees for rentals for the next 12 months*. We call it FFFF, Free Fees For February. Don’t delay get your property on the market and feel the love. 5 Tips for getting the love flowing: 1.
Appearances count- you have 2.6 secs to make an impression so make sure your house is ready for those photos and for people to walk through.
2.
Get someone else’s opinion – we all have that one friend whose house is amazing, get them round to give you some honest advice on what improvements could be made. It is too hard to be objectional on your own home.
3.
Spring Cleaning….and we mean just that! Once you have had a second opinion and made a couple of improvements to the home it is time to get cleaning. Declutter, take some of the things you have not used in years to the charity shop!
4.
Remember the buyer wants to visualise themselves in the home so removing some of your personal photos and belongings will be a good start (helps with the decluttering process too). A sense of space and a light and airy feeling is what most buyers are looking for.
5.
Say goodbye to foul smells the American’s always recommend that you bake cookies or cakes, if you are anything like me steer clear of this method. Fresh cut flowers such as Lilly’s are always a good choice. Foul smells can kill deals, so a good spring clean, declutter will go a long way!
Winkworth Surbiton 020 3861 0010 winkworth.co.uk/surbiton *The offers is only valid for properties signed up in February and as an exclusive only. 12 months free management fees offers is open to the first 10 properties, however an exclusive deal with be agreed with every property that comes on after the first 10.

While others sell, you should buy!
LOCAL PROPERTY INVESTOR Supplied by: Alan Frost – Simplify Property
Warren Buffet, the multi-multi billionaire, knows a thing or two about money. At 87 years old, he has seen it all – twice over – so it is fair to say when he talks, we should listen. We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful. In plain terms, when others are buying, you should be selling; when they are selling, you should be buying. The property market is on a down turn, economic prospects are poor and Brexit is coming ever closer and amateur landlords are selling up after being hit with increased taxes and regulations. All doom and gloom? No! This is the time to get yourself a great deal. No matter what is happening in the economy, there are simply not enough homes to meet demand. In terms of long term, income producing assets, nothing can compare to property and if you hold property for the medium to long term, you will enjoy massive increases in its value (and therefore your wealth). Risk comes from not knowing what you’re doing. Another quote from the maestro, and again he is spot on. People make a lot of money in property, but some people lose a lot of money because they simply do not know what they are doing. Buying high, overspending on doing the property up, getting the wrong builders, then the wrong tenants, with the wrong mortgage. There are a lot of things you need to know to make the most of your property investment, but luckily for you Simplify Property is here to help. We will help with some or all of the following: • Find the property • Help you arrange the right mortgage
37
• Project manage any building or improvement work • Make sure you have the right gas and electrical certification, licensing and planning permission (if necessary) • Find the right tenants • Manage the tenancy on your behalf • Make sure it is all done in the most tax efficient way for your circumstances. Our favorite holding period is forever. If something is making you money every month, and going up in value, why would you sell? With sensible choices you can have a hands free and stress free income coming in every month, with a little help from Simplify Property. Contact us today to start your journey to a better future. COMPETITION REVIEW
Roz-Ana Kingston This month we were hosted by Roz Ana Indian Restaurant. What a treat to the taste buds with the most enticing and flavoursome meal. Such a vast diversity of choice of not only food, but drinks too. I couldn’t speak more highly about our meal and the ambiance of the restaurant. The starters were exquisite for people who really enjoy quality and good presentation. We tried the Chef’s Seafood Samplers, which were presented beautifully and tasted amazing, highly recommended! These were followed by a delicious variety of mains. The Tiger prawns simmered in a creamy, fresh fenugreek sauce of Prawn Methi Malai, Mooplah Beef in roasted ground spice and curry leaf sauce, both fabulous.
