Firstly, I would like to congratulate Peppe! Peppe has taken on The Cardinal Pub in Tudor Drive and has completely changed it on the inside! It still has the feeling of a warm and inviting local pub, but has also added an Italian, rustic ambiance which is now serving traditional Italian and Sicilian homemade food. Please see his advert on page 18.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Lisa Daly: Hairdresser Hello, my name is Lisa Daly. I am a freelance, full-time hairdresser (colour specialist). I also have a home-based health and wellness business, which I do part time with my husband.

Supplied by: Lisa Daly

I have been in the hairdressing industry for 35 years. It was always my passion. I love making people feel good about themselves. A good colour and haircut can change a person’s life! I have a Lo’real colour degree diploma, which means that I know exactly what is going to happen with every colour I put on a clients hair. It’s all about the science behind hair colour. to swap synthetic vitamins for our Real Food Vitamins will be helping to solve a global problem. In our case, this problem is malnutrition in the under 5 year old children around the world.

We are now in Autumn, which means we need to put colour back into our hair after it has been lightened by the sun. More autumnal colours are in, but be sure your hairdresser knows which shade suits your skin tone. This is the secret to great colour, get this wrong and it can be a disaster.

The business is simple and fun. We use the products and share it with our social network. It’s all done online and delivered straight to the customer’s home.

There is a big difference in warm and cool skin tones. The wrong tone can make you look 10 years older, but the right one can make you look 10 years younger.

We are also helping people start up their own home businesses, which is great for mums or anyone looking to earn an extra income parttime. This is a great community thing and is brilliant for the economy.

I am looking for new hairdressing clients in the Kingston area and am happy to visit clients to introduce myself and do a free consultation. I have lived in Kingston upon thames for 2 years now and I love it! I love the vibrant city and the calmness of the river and parks. The market area is one of my favourite places to stroll around, eat street food and drink coffee. I really feel very lucky, it is such a great community.

Once the decision is made to start a home business, there is a full support system and guidance. We regularly hold home meetings and other events around the country. We are passionate about creating entrepreneurs, as we know everybody has that gift and we help people to realise that. Life could not be better and we are looking forward to helping so many more people.

My home business is both a health and wellness business and a Social Entrepreneur business. This means that anyone wishing

LOVE KINGSTON

Why is Love Kingston so important?

Supplied by: Elaine Miller - Love Kingston

The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames is a changing landscape, with a soon to be unprecedented growth in population. The recent economic downturn, coupled with reduced government and local council spending, is putting considerable pressure on frontline services. Over the last three years, Love Kingston has been successful in establishing a grassroots, place based, fundraising model. We’re now looking to the future and building the Love Kingston endowment fund, which will provide a sustainable source of income to support the changing needs of the community forevermore. Why might you give through us? • You can choose where your money goes and see it making a difference • You can support a vast range of projects from grassroots initiatives to social enterprises and large established charities • You can donate from as little as £1 a month!

What do our supporters say?

• You can invest for immediate impact or into an endowment fund for the long term

“A key success of Love Kingston has been to connect communities together to meet the needs of the poorest in the community. If we all work together we can make the borough a better place for everyone, and as a local business Kew Lighting & Electrical are proud to play a part”. Howard Connolly, MD

• You can meet those you support and find out more about the issues they face • You can trust us with the due diligence and monitoring of grantees to ensure that your donations are spent wisely and for maximum benefit

“Barclays Kingston is delighted to continue the support of Love Kingston. A great cause helping local people in the community and making a difference”. Branch Manager, James O’Meara

• You can give independently or in collaboration with others • You can meet other donors or remain entirely anonymous

“We are proud supporters of the Love Kingston campaign. Our team raised over £500 in the Kingston Run Challenge to help those less fortunate”. Saipem Ltd

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY

THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local CHARITY

Keeping your Elders Comfortable this Winter Winter can be a tough time for many of us - with shorter days, more time in the dark, and occasional body-shocking temperatures. Sometimes it’s difficult to maintain a comfortable lifestyle when the weather is particularly chilly; at least without spending tons of money on heating, insulation, double glazing and so on. Think about how much more difficult it is for more vulnerable people. With flu season kicking in, now is definitely the time to look out for the ones you love. If you have any friends or relatives who are less ablebodied, chances are, they aren’t keeping their bodies as active as usual. Regular activity and keeping the blood-pumping is crucial during the colder months, which means that they may require a little extra care and consideration. Below are some ideas on how to ensure they are safe and well, especially if you aren’t around them very often:

• Bottled water - (in the unlikely event of a burst pipe or difficulty getting out of bed) It is always important to stay hydrated, and easy access to water may be needed in order to take medications. Keep Things as Warm as Possible This is an obvious one, but you may find yourself wondering where to start. Here are some suggestions:

Stock up • Try to set aside some time to make a list of all the possible items that could help them out during the harsher areas of Winter; especially if they live alone and you find yourself unable to pay them a visit. For example:

• Keep the Cold Winds Out - Try to prevent any drafts from getting in wherever possible (see DIY section for anti-draught tips). • Insist on Layering up - (without causing too much of a sweat!) Check on their throws, warm clothes, slippers and blankets situation. Make sure they’ve got plenty to keep them warm in times of no central-heating and during the nights.

• Torches or Candles - (in case of a power cut) There are plenty of opportunities to get caught in the dark this time of year! • Medications - (particularly prescription medications!) Help to ensure that they aren’t going to run low, and they and that there are flu aids available. Remember to check the expiry dates on any current medications. • Non-perishable foods - (in case of severe weather, ailments or minimal store access) Try to keep the cupboards/freezer stocked with a good couple of days worth of food that has a long shelf-life.

8

• Provide some Winter Warmers - (if you’re around) Offer hot beverages and hearty meals to keep your loved ones warmed and nourished throughout. Spending time with your elders is important, and showing you care is the best thing you can do, so remember to make the effort where you can, and stay safe.

POLICE ADVICE

It’s Getting Dark Outside - Launching Autumn Nights….

Supplied by: Alison McWinnie - MET Police

Burglary can have a long-lasting impact on victims, leaving them feeling isolated and vulnerable. This winter the Met is calling on Londoners to take simple steps to secure their home as it intensifies its crackdown against burglars who capitalize on the darker evenings to steal valuables and cash. During the autumn/winter, burglary traditionally increases by 25 per cent across the Capital. Help us to prevent burglary by following these tips:

Did you know that whenever you buy anything online - from your weekly shop to your annual holiday - you could be raising a free donation for Kingston Borough Neighbourhood Watch? There are nearly 3,000 retailers on board ready to make a donation, including Amazon, John Lewis, Aviva, thetrainline and Sainsbury’s – it doesn’t cost you a penny extra!

• Close and lock all doors and windows • Keep valuables out of sight • Fit a mortice lock to your front door and other external doors. • Consider installing a burglar alarm • Leave some lights on if it will be dark when you get home

It’s really simple, all you have to do is: 1. Join.

• Do not leave your car keys or ID documents near a door, letterbox or window • Always check who is at the door and don’t open it if you feel anxious • Keep sheds and out buildings locked • Mark or etch your property with your postcode, house or flat number, or the first three letters of your house name • Register items with a serial number at www.immobilise.com • Cancel milk and other deliveries if you will be away for days at a time • Join Neighbourhood Watch! There are no compulsory meetings – just crime alerts and advice (Email Kingston.NHW@Met. Police.uk to join)

Head to http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/ causes/kingstonboroughneighbourhoodwatch/ and sign up for free. 2. Shop. Every time you shop online, go to easyfundraising first, pick the retailer you want and start shopping. 3. Raise. After you’ve checked out, that retailer will make a donation to your good cause for no extra cost whatsoever! There are no catches or hidden charges and Kingston Borough Neighbourhood Watch will be really grateful for your donations. Thank you for your support.

We had an amazing attendance at our Staying Safe Event on 3rd October. Thank you to everyone who supported us. Do let us know if there are any particular topics you would like us to cover at future events Kingston. NHW@Met.Police.uk

November Traditions November is a very eventful time of year that comes with a wealth of history; kicking off early into the month with one of the biggest British commemorations, Guy Fawkes Night (also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night and Firework Night). This annual event is celebrated on 5th November. If you’ve forgotten the details or aren’t familiar with the story behind this tradition, the details tell of the Gunpowder Plot on 5th November 1605. Guy Fawkes was involved in guarding a mass of explosives that his plotters had set up below the House of Lords in London. The objective of the plotters was to blow up parliament and the monarch, King James I. Their hope was that the disaster would initiate an uprising of English Catholics, who had been very negatively affected by the newly introduced penal laws against the practice of their religion. As it turned out, their plan went awry after a mysterious warning letter was sent to William Parker, 4th Baron Monteagle on 26th October 1605. A search throughout the House of Lords followed on 4th November, where Guy Fawkes was found guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder. He was then arrested, convicted and sentenced to execution by hanging, along with eight others who made a stand against authority during the plans uncovering. Most other conspirators fled the city upon the plot’s discovery. Anti-Catholic legislation was soon introduced, however many devoted Catholics retained high office throughout the reign of King James I. The foiled plot has been commemorated for many years since, through special sermons, lighting bonfires, burning effigies and special events. This

eventually evolved into Bonfire Night, or Firework Night, which is commemorated every year throughout the UK, although it isn’t celebrated in Northern Ireland. Guy Fawkes Night was also pursued in the New England States under the name of “Pope Day” as late as the Eighteenth Century, after the tradition was established in British colonies by the early American settlers. Nowadays the celebration also remains a tradition in places like New Zealand and Newfoundland (Canada). Although not everyone considers the real story behind the occasion when they’re stocking up on fireworks, seeing the skies filled with colour and lights this month will definitely spark some thought for those that do. If you enjoy stocking up on your historical knowledge, and want to find out more about the areas you live in, why not spend some time this Sunday with Kingston Tour Guides? They lead informative walks from Kingston Market Place every Sunday from 11:00am for just £5 per adult. Soak up some of Kingston’s history this season.

GARDENING SECTION

Auntie Planty’s Gardening Mailbag

Supplied by: Valerie Munro - Auntie Planty

Q1: My new apple tree was labelled up as a prolific fruiter, but this year only managed two rather small fruits, although there were plenty of flowers on it in the spring. A1: I think your apple tree is lonely, and could do with a pollinating partner growing close by. Although your tree was described as a prolific fruiter, few apple trees successfully pollinate themselves. They need pollen from another variety of apple, and almost any variety will do. The only thing you have to watch for is that they both flower at the same time, so that the bees can transfer pollen from one to the other. Q2: I grew beans for the first time this year, and was plagued by black aphids. I would like to plant beans next year, what can I do to control this pest? A2: The black bean aphid (Aphis fabae) is particularly troublesome. Unlike other aphids that die off in the cold, this one spends winter on another wide group of garden plants, so it seems that they never go away. When the weather warms up, there’s a mass migration onto your beans, beetroot, dahlias, docks, fat hen, poppies, nasturtiums, etc for the summer. Do you happen to have any Euonymus europaeus, Viburnum opulus or philadelphus in your garden? This is where they spend the winter. Treating these plants with a winter wash will help to knock off the over-wintering eggs and be on the lookout for early signs on the summer plants. Q3: There’s a blank wall opposite my kitchen window where nothing will grow - any suggestions on how to brighten it up? A3: Why not try your hand at some wall art? If you are not brave enough to attempt a trick of the eye mural with some gorgeous scenery, you could use an interior-decorating stencil with, say, a flower motif. You can then create a flower border that requires no watering, weeding or feeding. And when you want a change of scene, a quick flip with white paint and you can start again! 13

Q4: I have noticed that every time I water my houseplants, there are tiny black flies around the place. Are they harmful? A4: Your compost is playing host to fungus gnats. They are more of a nuisance than a pest. The larvae, if you have seen them, are whitish maggots up to 5 mm long. They live in the soil and feed mainly on decaying organic matter such as dead roots, but may damage seedlings or the base of soft cuttings. The adult flies can be trapped by hanging sticky yellow fly paper strips close to the soil. Watering less often can discourage them.

FAMILY SECTION

Planning the Perfect Gift Now is officially the time to get planning. I know you’re probably not looking too forward to those Christmas shops, but the holidays are on the way! I personally love the shopping part (despite the money issues and packed high streets!), and seeking out the perfect gifts for my loved ones, but I’m a real list-maker.

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

The sooner you start making lists, the sooner you can start crossing things off...although you will need to make an effort to hide things if you’re purchasing early gifts for those you live with. No one knows your family and friends better than you, therefore no one can give you the perfect gift idea - but that doesn’t mean we can’t help you get started. Shopping sites can be a Godsend!

It’s really not about the price!

Although buying abroad can take a little longer to arrive (and if you’re anything like me - sometimes you overdo it on the online sales), there are so many great gift solutions on the web. With sites providing personalised mugs, photo canvasses and calendars, you can still add a touch of personality to those click-and-deliver finds. I’ve bought many photo collage mugs and canvas prints that have been very well received from family members.

This may seem like a general nicety that people give each other, but it really is true! As we all know from those post-Christmas sales and bargain bins; you don’t always have to shell out in order to find something good. Therefore, it might be worth considering homemade gifts. Putting effort into a oneof-a-kind artistic endeavour for the one you love could mean so much more than buying another set of pyjamas. Alternatively. if your gift recipient would appreciate some spending money, perhaps a shopping gift card would be better? Though it is more limited than cash, it guarantees that they’ll spend it on something special for them, or save it for a fun shopping trip, and not just put it towards their next grocery shop.

Its also possible to find some great items on sites like EBay and keep them in your “watch list” until you are able to scoop them up. This is a very handy feature that allows you to browse any time you like - via app or website, and start spending when you can. For other sites, such as clothing retailers or gadget stores, you can also bookmark your searches for later. Just remember, mail services can get pretty backed up around Christmas, so the sooner you get your gifts sorted, the better!

A great gift is a token of love and appreciation, not an obligation; so don’t sweat the details too much, just put your heart into it.

Time to Get Learning! Summer has passed and your children are (hopefully) settled back at school. It’s now coming up to when you first properly meet their teacher, or (for secondary children) they have a mentoring session with their form tutor.

LEARNING SECTION Supplied by: Celia Osbourne NumberWorks’n’Words

It’s now time to think. Look at it critically: Is homework causing too much of a problem? Often, slightly worried parents end one year promising to ‘see how it goes’. Are those hoped for ‘improvements’ actually happening? Is this year as good as the last, or are you beginning to sense that maybe things aren’t quite as they should be? Your child might be grunting that everything is ‘ok’, but do you get the sense that maybe it’s not? Often it’s Mum or Dad that picks up on a problem, well before the child shares it. If you feel that your child isn’t doing as well as he/she could – then act now. How to help

Positive in English

Some children just need that ‘little bit extra’ to put them back on track. It’s something that Mums and Dads just can’t do. Parents are for fun, games and cuddles; kids can answer them back and get stroppy if asked to do something difficult. Getting them out of the house and away from domestic distractions is a must!

NumberWorks’n’Words is great for English too. We teach reading, writing and spelling in a structured, systematic way using phonics and whole word methods. We have discussions to help get the writing going – with fun topics; talking it through and helping those ideas get onto that paper.

Help right now

Free assessment

That’s where we come in. At Numberworks’n’Words, we specialise in putting back the confidence that many children lose in a big class. Even brilliant teachers can’t support every child and provide any extra attention as needed.

We offer a free assessment and taster lesson. Using our in depth knowledge of the National Curriculum, we assess Maths/ English or both, to discover where your child is. We discuss exactly what we can do to move them on. Then we give them a short taster session to show you how we work – we assess your child, you assess us!

So often we meet really bright children who have just missed understanding one thing in their maths or got bogged down with English. It brings their confidence crashing down. Sometimes they think their friends are just better at it than them, so they stop trying. Getting the positive in maths NumberWorks’n’Words specialises in finding that ‘one thing’ to get them on track. We use very structured teaching and a supportive atmosphere, as well as laughter, to bring back the positive and give every child the ‘I can’ attitude.

HOME SECTION

Home Maintenance this Season

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

Throughout the transition from Autumn into Winter, there are some additional jobs to look out for around the home. If you want to keep your home in top-shape, as well as cozy and warm, you need to keep a track on areas such as: Stocking up Ahead of Time Just in case the weather gets the better of us, it is important that you’ve got all you need from snow shovels to generators, as well as flashlights and emergency supplies. Always ensure you are well-stocked on things like batteries, matches and first aid kit fillers, as you never know what the Winter season might bring. You can never have too many blankets either. Heating Ensure that your boiler or furnace is up and running as required, by getting an electrician or contractor to give it a check-up before the really cold weather sets in. You may need a filter replaced in your furnace, or may have a simpler issue to take care of like an incorrect time schedule on your boiler. After all, you wouldn’t want to be heating the house all throughout the day while you’re at work and then doing absolutely nothing for those morning and evening chills. Utilities Remember to check for water leaks, and mend any pipe problems as soon as possible with the help of a professional or some heat tape. If possible, shut off your water when you are going away for a while. This will prevent water damage, as pipes can freeze over if it’s really cold.

Insulation Are you in need of more insulation? This is quite an important method of defence against freezing cold temperatures and strong winds. If possible, try to do some inspecting in case you are in need of an upgrade. Insulation and weather strippings are particularly important in attics, as a means of guarding against ice dams (this is when snow on the roof thaws and refreezes, which can damage your home through water damage or even cause the roof to cave under the weight. Outdoor Jobs Remember to clear away any dead tree branches and trim away anything that is in the way, or that could contribute to ice and snow-related accidents. You should also keep an eye on gutters, as these enable snow to melt and drain away from your roof. Ensure that they are free of leaves and other debris, but be careful when cleaning them yourself. Whatever you do to keep your home in full swing, remember to stay safe and stay warm.

Anti-Draughting This time of year always comes with extra layers, warm blankets and fuzzy slippers - however, sometimes this isn’t enough. If you’ve already found yourself switching the heating on as opposed to throwing on a jumper, you could find yourself spending a lot more than you can afford to on warming up. Not only does moving into the Winter season add a fair amount to your energy bills as it is, but you could be doing your bank balance further damage by undoing the boiler’s work. By leaving windows and doors open, you know you’ll instantly be letting some of that heat out - so you must also be conscious of other areas of the house that may be letting the warmth escape. If the cold is creeping in between heating cycles you’ll definitely want to stop it. Here are some simple ways to stop the chills yourself: First, identify the problem. Seems simple enough, but first of all - have a look around all windows, doors and vents. Hold your hand against the cracks and edges and see if you can feel a slight drop in temperature. Other culprits for letting in draughts may include any pipes leading outside, suspended floorboards, lofts or even letterboxes.

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

Pick up some draught-proofing strips (there are various types: self-adhesive, foam, metal, plastic, etc), but make sure you get a wide enough strip to cover the gaps, or it’ll be a waste. These simply get placed over the cracks to stop the involuntary airflow. If you have windows that don’t open, or you have gaps between the floorboards and pipeworks, a silicone-based sealant or filler will be more useful. Don’t forget the external areas! You can purchase keyhole covers, letterbox flaps or brushes and draught excluders for a quick fix airway-block.

These should all be blocked off if possible, except in rooms where fires could start or where moisture is collected, such as kitchens, bathrooms, or around a functioning fireplace. Figure out what you need. It will be easier for you if you’ve got doubleglazing, but anyone can begin proofing their homes; though you can always call in a professional (which may cost more). Your local hardware store, or anywhere that provides general hardware supplies will give you what you need.

An unused fireplace and chimney may be causing a few shivers too, so you could call in a professional to fit a cap over the chimney, or you can get a special draught excluder to do the job from the inside. Just don’t start any fires while the equipment is set up! Ventilation areas are really important. Air flow is important in keeping your home fresh and dry, so don’t completely block off vents and extractor fans. These allow for just a little fresh air to creep in, without having windows and doors open all the time.

SPECIAL FEATURE

Ways to Spend the Winter

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

This time of year can always make it a little difficult to keep busy and active. With the chilly mornings, less daylight and a lot of gloomy weather - some of us tend to prefer staying at home and vegging out in front of the TV above anything. There are however, plenty of ways to keep the cogs in your brain whirring as usual and to make sure your hands are happy and helpful. Just because you’re spending more time indoors, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the coming months. Below are some examples of how to spend the next couple of months and how to feel more productive and accomplished at the end of it. The most obvious solution to keep yourself busy - get a hobby! This doesn’t necessarily mean you need to force yourself into something with direction, such as knitting winter garments or starting a big home DIY project (unless that sounds like something you’d have fun with of course, it’s great to use those rainy days up on finishing to-do lists!). The important thing is that you don’t waste the month on something you don’t even enjoy or that you’d beat yourself up over if you didn’t complete it. Finding a reason to start something is a great idea, for example, making your own Christmas cards - who

wouldn’t love a one of a kind, thought out gesture this Christmas? You need to first think about what it is you enjoy. Don’t let anyone else tell you what you should do with those nights in and chilled out weekends, but feel free to take inspiration from others, as you might find something new that you grow to really love doing. I personally enjoy things like baking, sketching and photography; even if it’s just at home. Alternatively of course, you can wrap up in a few extra layers and go on a photography walk through the park (which could lead to some beautiful festive shots!). Changes to your Lifestyle How many times through a brand new year have you looked back and said to yourself, “Wow...I definitely overdid it this Christmas!”? With parties, the big dinner and plenty of gorging on mince pies and chocolatey gifts, this can sometimes seem utterly unavoidable; however, it doesn’t mean you have to let all the good habits slide! Remember to combine your feasts with plenty of vitamin-packed foods - mix up those food groups!

even watching quiz shows, playing board games or working on a jigsaw can bring a sense of accomplishment, and can test your knowledge and responses in a fun and positive way. Although Winter is a time for snuggling under blankets for us (and a time for hibernation for some of the animal kingdom), it’s still important to stay happy and productive. It will also make it a lot easier in the new year to get back to basics and put your mind into work and resolutions when you don’t completely shut down for the holidays.

Try to remember some of that portion control when you can, as we all tend to go for heartier meals, creamy hot chocolates and tasty snacks while its cold. Somehow a salad and a glass of water just doesn’t cut it on a cold winter’s day! The biggest factor in staying healthy of course, is exercise! Although it may seem daunting, going for those early morning jogs when your breath is becoming more and more visible; there’s no better way to keep warm than by staying active!

Whatever you do, enjoy the Winter season. If you’re stuck for ideas on how to spend it, and want to join a local group/class; or, if you simply feel like a fun night out, remember to take a look at our Local Events Section and see what’s on in the local area, or go and pay a visit to the Rose Theatre Kingston.

Why not start up a new routine that suits you? Think about your availability, your sleeping habits and the best ways of staying motivated. Even squeezing in 15-30 minutes of quick-burst activity -especially if you have equipment such as a treadmill or a bike- can really make a difference, not just in gradually shedding a few pounds, but also in boosting metabolism and getting those endorphins that make you feel good about yourself. If you’re not keen on the idea of muscle workouts that purely focus on push ups, crunches and weightlifting; try exploring other methods like dancing, playing a sport or yoga. Keep your Brain Busy Even something as simple as doing some Sudoku puzzles or dabbling in some writing of your own will ensure a healthy dose of brain activity, can bring plenty of amusement and teach you something new during the quieter periods of the day. For many, 23

Sadly his bad habits destroy his reputation, and his restaurant in the process.

One for foodies and for those who enjoy a bit of drama! Star of The Hangover, Limitless and Silver Linings Playbook, Bradley Cooper plays the role of Adam Jones. Adam is a chef who had a taste of the bigtime earlier than most. From the young age of 16 he decides to purchase a one-way ticket to Paris to pursue his dream of owning a fabulous Michelin star restaurant.

Now Adam is intent on redeeming himself and making his dream of earning three Michelin stars a reality. He has all the skill, the passion and the grit needed, but now he needs the best possible team to make it a reality, including the beautiful, budding chef, Helene - played by Sienna Miller (Layer Cake, Alfie). He is never more comfortable than when he’s in the kitchen, but will he succeed in achieving all he has ever wanted, or will life get in the way?

Poltergeist The story follows an ordinary family living in a suburban home, consisting of Eric Bowen (Sam Rockwell - The Green Mile, Seven Psychopaths) and his wife Amy (Rosemarie DeWitt - The Watch), along with their three children Kendra, Madison and Griffin. However, things soon turn extraordinary when their home is invaded by angry spirits who bring violence and terror to their quiet household. The recurring visits from these spirits appear friendly at first, then continue to escalate and they take the Bowens’ youngest daughter away with them.

Not everyone is a fan of horror or spooky thrillers that make you want to leave the lights on and avoid looking under the bed; but this adaptation is brilliant for an indoor fright night with friends and family, so go get some popcorn and give it a watch! Sam Raimi and Gil Kenan, who brought us movies like The Grudge and Evil Dead have reimagined the haunting Spielberg classic in a way that is sure to make the hairs on your neck stand up! 25

With no plausible explanation to the disappearance of their daughter, the Bowens decide to consult with a paranormal expert, Carrigan Burke (Jared Harris - Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Lincoln) instead of going to the police. Can they find out what happened to their daughter and get her back?

The History of SemiPermanent Eyelashes in the UK

HEALTH & BEAUTY Supplied by: Jinny Coffey - Jinny Beauty

The recent trend for professional women in the UK today is semi-permanent eyelashes. In this article I will talk about the history of Semi-Permanent eyelashes in the UK, the full procedure explaining how the lashes are applied, and how to take care of them.

Jinny Lash procedure

In 2003, the history of Semi-permanent eyelashes in the UK started in New Malden, Jinny Salon. One beautician brought eyelash extensions to the UK, and she did the Semi-Permanent eyelash treatment for her friends. This Friend was so surprised about how gorgeous her lashes looked, that she brought five of her friends to Jinny Salon to get the same treatment. Those five friends were also extremely pleased with the result of this treatment, and recommended it to all their friends. This beautician then became confident in Semi-Permanent eyelashes, so in the following year, Feb 2004 at the Excel Professional beauty exhibition, the product and training course for these eyelashes was officially launched. The beautician to start this was me. Now we have trained many beauticians in the UK, and we are supplying products to many salons all over the UK and other European countries.

The after care for Jinny lash is very simple and easy to follow. After the Semi-Permanent eyelash treatment, we do not recommend the use of water on your lashes for 24 hours, so that it allows enough time for the adhesive to set. It is also very important that you do not rub or pull on your lashes, so that they can be long-lasting. We also highly recommend the use of Jinny lash conditioner over either your natural lashes or your Jinny lash, because it lengthens and thickens your lashes for a healthier and more beautiful look.

After care

Lashes are available in a gorgeous range of lengths, curl and thicknesses. They can be perfectly tailored to suit each individual personality. Jinnylash therapists will give you all the help you need to decide on the best possible look. Then, while you relax and perhaps even drift off, your lashes will be transformed into the most beautiful ones you have ever had.

The Benefits of Winter Tyres

Countdown I’m writing this just before I go sailing for the week around Corfu. Can’t wait; clear blue water, sun and the odd glass of wine while relaxing in a beautiful harbour. The amazing thing is just how much I’ve got done this week. I bet you are just the same when you are going away. And of course we all know why; it’s because we have a deadline. Still, back to the title of my article Countdown. I’m sure that we have all seen the show. It’s where two people compete against each other and a clock in games of word dexterity and mathematical agility. A little bit like business really: marketing (words), business (maths), and your competition.

BUSINESS SECTION Supplied by: David Wimblett of 7 Training

you find that whatever it is just fills the time? In fact you could do with even longer still. There are distractions, no parking meter, no next appointment to go to.

But I’ve only just had that idea, so that is for another time, because what I want to talk about today is getting things done. I’ve talked about it before, our 1440 minutes we each get every day - doesn’t matter if you are the Prime Minister, Richard Branson, Michelle Obama - we all get exactly the same, and how important it is to use those minutes productively, if we are going to be a real success.

Here’s the idea, I got it from Nigel Botterill (Founder of the Entrepreneur’s Circle), get yourself a nice big alarm clock and put it on your desk. Now write ‘your’ appointments in your diary. For example: write sales letter 9.30am till 10.00am. Then at 9.30am set your alarm clock for 30 minutes and off you go. It makes a big difference I can tell you!

So, how about this for an idea? Setting ‘end times’ is one of the most important things you can do to help you get more things done. It’s pretty simple with things like meetings. So how about this for a way to ensure your meetings don’t over run? When parking your car, don’t put in extra money in case you get delayed, instead make sure the meeting is focused and keeps to the time limit. But back to my idea. What about when you are at your desk? You’ve a number of things to do and you’ve got all day to do them. Don’t

33

So, if you are really serious about getting more things done, please start using ‘end times’ and get yourself a nice big alarm clock. I promise in a few months’ time you won’t need the clock and you will be getting far more done. If you find getting everything done impossible, then why not give me a call, as I am sure I can help you? New Regulations for Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms

PROPERTY SECTION Supplied by: Peter Greenwood Greenwoods Residential

All private, rented properties should have been fitted with a smoke alarm and (if applicable) a carbon monoxide alarm before 1st October, so potentially, you could already be breaking the law, and putting yourself and your family at risk, if you have yet to get one installed. The new regulations came into force throughout the UK on 1st October 2015. You may already be aware of the Government’s “Fire Kills” Campaign, as well as the importance of having a fully functioning smoke detector installed. Statistics show that you are actually four times more likely to die in a fire at home if you do not have a working smoke alarm. Smoke Alarms

fitted in that room. These should be located at about eye level either on a shelf or on a wall, and need to be installed by following the manufacturer’s instructions. They must be fixed securely and kept between one and three metres away from the fuel burning appliance. Regulations To reduce the risk of a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning, the government has introduced the new regulations which require that every private, rented home must have alarms installed - on some occasions, not just in houses, but any private residences.

The law requires you to install at least one smoke alarm per storey of a rental property that includes a room used as living accommodation; for example, if there is a bathroom/toilet. However, the new regulations don’t state whether these need to be hardwired or battery powered, but the recommended location would be in a circulation spot on the ceiling, such as the hallway or landing. Carbon Monoxide Alarms Carbon monoxide (CO) is a completely colourless and odourless gas, which is produced when fuel burns without the air supply it needs. Exposing yourself to high levels of CO can be fatal, therefore the proper precautions must be put in place. If you have a fuel burning combustion appliance, for example a wood burning stove or a fireplace with coals to light - a carbon monoxide alarm will definitely need to be

There is also a requirement for all landlords, or those acting on their behalf to make sure that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are in good working order from the first day of a new tenancy. If you already moved into your current property before the new rules came into action (any date prior to 1st October 2015), then maintenance is the tenant’s responsibility. If it is a house with multiple occupation, then you may need to introduce a higher standard of fire safety precautions to account for the larger size, alternative layout and occupancy. RESTAURANT REVIEW

The Queens Head Kingston This month, we paid a visit to the fabulous Queens Head, who have recently been taken under new management. I have to say, the general atmosphere upon walking in was great. There were smiling faces, warm and attentive staff, and it wasn’t noisy at all. We had a lovely, relaxed afternoon meal, whilst admiring the wall art and outdoor views, and listening to the radio playing quietly in the background. We couldn’t have picked a better place to be on a Sunday afternoon - especially with their fantastic menu, which had plenty of variety!

meal and were not the least bit disappointed. Thank you so much to the friendly staff and brilliant chefs at the Queens Head - we’ll definitely be coming back!

Their Sunday roasts are absolutely delicious! We were even upset that we couldn’t manage every bite. The crispy potatoes, fresh, seasoned vegetables, succulent chicken and almost melt-in-the-mouth roast beef were heaven. All topped with a big, fluffy yorkshire pudding (which we soon found out upon cutting into - was filled with gravy!), and a small jug full of extra gravy to pour as needed. We’d been really looking forward to a hearty
