LOCAL BUSINESS
This month we are talking to Omni Local Director and head of OLBN - John Gower.
Supplied by: John Gower
Q1: Hi John, OLBN has been doing so well recently, is there any big news or success stories you’d like to shout about in regards to business networking? A1: Its been very hard work! I don’t like to brag, but Omni Local Business Networking has been most likely the most successful thing I have ever done in my professional career. We are officially the fastest growing networking organisation in the whole of the UK. Inside of 14 months we now have 20 groups and over 300 members spreading across Hampshire, Berkshire, Surrey, Essex and London. Q2: That’s great to hear, and what have we got to look forward to this Christmas? A2: This year we have 2, yes 2 Christmas Parties! We have one at the Bingham Hotel in Richmond and one at the Aviator Hotel in Farnborough. I am always looking out for opportunities to help others, so we have a Charity Auction at both parties in aid of The Royal Marsden Hospital. Details can be found on omnilocalbusinessnetworking.com. Q3: I’m sure many readers will be interested in joining OLBN, what benefits are there for newly registered members? A3: Great question. There way too many to be able to list here, but, in essence Networking Works. When joining OLBN you get access to a whole network which will support your business and look out for connections and promote your business. Q4: Do you have any calls for new team members in any of the group locations? A4: We have a target of 60 groups by the end of 2018....So we are always on the look out for people to join our teams! Our groups are run by members who run their own business, so you are getting very experienced people helping at every level within OLBN. Q5: More exciting news...word on the street is, we’ve been shortlisted in the Kingston Business Excellence Awards! Can you tell our readers about that?
live and be a part of. The Kingston Business Excellence awards is a fantastic way of having some reward for all the hard work as a small business owner. I am humbled to have made it to the finals, as there is some very stiff competition. As I type this, the deadline for print will have passed for me to tell you how I have got on, but fingers crossed... Q6: For those who don’t know, how exactly does the KBEA work? A6: Anyone can enter the KBEA! Really anyone! I will be looking at keeping everyone up to date with the results, but, I would honestly say, anyone with anything that they do for the community, business or otherwise should look at the different categories and see how they can take part. The ceremony is at the Ravins Ait on the 12th of October. Its going to be a lot of fun! Q7: Do you have any advice for those looking to start up their own magazine or networking group? A7: Believe it or not, this was one of the interviewing questions. Setting up a business can appear to be very easy.....Trust me, any kind of business is not “easy”. The only advice I can offer is PLAN!.....Planning everything can give you a clear idea of your hopes and dreams, and let you know if they are real and achievable! To find out more visit omnilocal.co.uk or go to omnilocalbusinessnetworking.com for our upcoming meetings.
A5: I am so proud to be a local business owner in Kingston. It is such a great place to

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY
THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: CHARITY Anne Blanche - Carers UK
24th November is Carers Rights Day! For many, people looking after an older, seriously ill or disabled relative or friend is just something they do. Not recognising you are carrying out a caring role can be a real barrier to getting vital support. If you do not see yourself as a carer, you are unlikely to ask for a carers assessment, apply for a carers allowance or seek help, advice and information; the lack of which may have serious personal and financial implications for you. There are many types of carers: Parent Carers - caring for seriously ill or disabled children. Mental Health Carers - caring for someone with a mental health condition, co-ordinating support and providing emotional support, but not exclusively. Caring for elderly people - those caring for people who are elderly, with disabilities and long term health conditions. This can be very tiring and stressful, helping with lifting, toileting and dressing, for example. The carers too may be elderly, adding to the stresses. Distance carers - Providing intermittent care, characterised by periods of intensive caring, as well as care from a distance. This involves co-ordinating care and providing emotional support as well as the stresses of distance, costs, difficulty maintaining contacts and control. WHAT CAN YOU DO IF YOU NEED HELP, ADVICE OR INFORMATION? You can contact Carers UK. The free helplines operate Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm. (ring 0808 8087777) Ask for any of the free leaflets which you might find helpful for a specific problem or to keep for reference. Carers UK have also produced a useful Guide. “Carers UK Guide- looking after someone” Carers can get a free copy of this guide on request. It contains useful information and advice and gives an illustrated introduction to the challenges of caring as well as comprehensive information such as :-
• Technology • Your workplace • Other help and legislation All this information can also be accessed on- line for those with the technology (go to the help and advice section of the Carers UK website). In the days prior to 24th November there there will be lots of publicity in the press on radio and TV. Local organisations may also be hosting events in your area so watch your local press for details. Help is out there. Kingston Voluntary Action also has lists of local charities 020 8255 3335

Paige Mengers

Cobham’s leading boutique for buying and selling the best of pre-loved designer fashion reopens it doors under the new management of Paige Mengers. Phoenix first opened in 1978 to offer the very best of pre-loved luxury fashion in Surrey – which through its history has been helmed by the likes of designer labels from Louis Vuitton to Gucci. As a highly respected figure within London’s thriving fashion industry, Paige - who will succeed Gerry and Cathy Cott who purchased the store in 2007 – has already mobilised her plans to entirely renovate the store, developing innovative and ground-breaking new strategies to set sales in motion once again. With the view of establishing Phoenix as the go-to destination for customers seeking a highly-edited collection of clothing in superb condition; wonderful, wearable and perfectly relevant for life in the 21st century; Paige will be undertaking a number of different roles within the day to day running of the store.
can expect to see the boutique undergo extensive refurbishment over the next 12 months; including an elegant new shop front, luxurious dressing rooms and a complete redesign of the interior to create a more spacious, airy environment. This will coincide with the stores impressive 40th anniversary as the cornerstone of buyingand-selling luxury fashion in the local area.
From the introduction of home wardrobe visits to the launch of a new and highly interactive website, which will allow clients the opportunity to digitally compare the performance of their sales in addition to purchasing any new items online directly from the store, Paige will be using her extensive experience of 25 years in the fashion industry to take Phoenix on the next stage of its journey.
Mengers said of her appointment “I am immensely excited to be the new owner of one of Cobham’s longest standing stores – I know just how special Phoenix has become to the community. My aim is to continue to deliver only the very best contemporary fashion pieces with a highly exclusive service; at the same time opening up the space and introducing new digital formats to bring our clients a truly unforgettable and personalised shopping experience.” In other words: bring it on!
For sellers who simply want to sell one or two items, to well established and highly privatised clientele from far and wide, the new VIP door-to-door service brings the unique opportunity to sell many high-value items without lifting a finger; all handpicked by Paige and her team of fashion experts to ensure that only the very best items are selected for resale in the store.

Eadweard Muybridge (1830 to 1904)
LOCAL HISTORY Supplied by: Mike Seigel - Kingston Tour Guides
This month I shall talk about another key character in Kingston’s history – Eadweard Muybridge, who invented the forerunner of the cine camera, and thus can link Kingston to Hollywood! Born on 9 April 1830 he was baptised as Edward James Muggeridge at All Saints Church, Kingston. He later changed his surname first to Muygridge, then to Muybridge, and spelt his Christian name as Eadweard, probably having seen this spelling on the plinth of Kingston’s Coronation Stone, inaugurated in 1850. It became “cool” then to sound Saxon! He set off for America in the 1850s and became established as a bookseller and publisher’s agent in San Francisco, trading under the name E J Muybridge. After an accident which brought him back to the UK, he returned to San Francisco to become a professional photographer. Muybridge established his reputation as a landscape photographer by his fine views of Yosemite, California’s national park of outstanding natural scenery. He accompanied survey expeditions along the western coasts, recorded the newly built Pacific Railroads and in 1873 photographed the final stages of a conflict between a group of Indians and the United States Army. Even by today’s standards his photographs are remarkable for their clarity and composition and show an artist’s appreciation of natural scenery and an eye for the dramatic effect. The summit of his achievement in landscape photography was his magnificent panorama of San Francisco (1877), a comprehensive and detailed study of the City which existed before the earthquake of 1906. Muybridge’s name today is associated chiefly with the photography of movement. He first became involved in this field in 1872 when Leland Stanford, former Governor of California, asked him to photograph his famous horse, Occident. The results, though ‘little better than silhouettes’ were apparently sufficient to settle an old controversy by showing that a trotting horse did, at certain stages of its movement, have
11
all four feet off the ground at once. In order to re-create a moving image from his still sequences, Muybridge developed his moving picture projector, the zoopraxiscope. It was first used at Stanford’s home in 1879 and subsequently in his lectures. Muybridge travelled to Europe and lectured before distinguished audiences in Paris and London. In 1894, Muybridge returned to Kingston for his retirement years and published two further books summarising his achievements, Animals in Motion (1899) and The Human Figure in Motion (1901). He died at Kingston on 8 May 1904. Muybridge bequeathed his zoopraxiscope and other items to the Royal Borough of Kingston. If you are interested in learning more about the fascinating history of our town, why not join one of our tours, led by specially trained volunteers? We meet at 11am on the first Sunday of each month from October to March outside the church gates in the Ancient Market Place. The charge is £5 per adult - or you can arrange a special tour for you and your friends at a time to suit you. For further information please look at our website www.kingstontourguides.org.uk

POLICE ADVICE
Hello Readers! This month I have a burglary update for you.
Supplied by: Alison McWinnie - MET Police
It has been identified that South American nationals (predominantly Chileans) are targeting exclusive houses, taking expensive items including jewellery. Their method of entry is through the first floor as it is believed ground floors are normally alarmed. They indiscriminately take all jewellery during an untidy search of the first floor. There are 64+ offenders identified so far and the travelling nature of these offenders suggests any of these can be committing offences in London and beyond. Suspects identified by forensics for burglaries in London are being arrested as far away as Wales and also at border controls when attempting to leave the country. WHAT THEY TARGET: • Properties tend to be large exclusive houses (usually detached) • Properties usually back onto areas of open land such as golf courses, open green spaces. • Properties usually have nobody home at the time. • Electrical items such as phones, laptops and tablets usually left behind • Untidy search – usually upstairs only
stored behind them.
WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR:
5. Use timer switches linked to lights and a radio so it appears that someone is at home.
It is believed that two cars travel in convoy to an area. Each car has three or more burglars in each, leaving a lookout in the car. There is sometimes a female lookout that knocks on front doors to determine if anyone is home. Vehicles tend to be saloon style, aged between 10 - 15 years old. If you see any South American males or females acting suspiciously on your road CALL 999. SECURING YOUR HOME:
6. Invest in a safe for valuables and securely fix it to a solid surface. 7. Install a visible intruder alarm system. 8. Install low level ‘dusk till dawn’ lighting. 9. Keep side and rear boundaries high to restrict access and front boundaries low to remove hiding places. 10. Photograph and mark valuables with your postcode and house number/name. Register items with serial numbers at: www. immobilise.com
1. Don’t leave your keys or ID documents within easy reach of doors, letterboxes or windows. 2. Close and lock all doors and windows.
For more updates and advice, do join Neighbourhood Watch.
3. Lock garages and sheds so garden tools and ladders can’t be used to break into your home.
Email Kingston.NHW@met.police.uk with your name and postal address.
4. Keep side gates locked and wheelie bins

ARTS
Louise Anderson
Supplied by: KAOS
My obsession with Eadweard Muybridge’s Dancer began at a Symposium held in his honour in December 2016. From that moment on, I wanted to pay homage to the woman in the photograph. A year later, this has become reality through this new body of work, The Other Woman:187. This will be displayed in the Community Case at Kingston Museum and History Centre from 6 October to 23 November 2017 as part of the Museum’s celebrations of Muybridge, who lived and worked in Kingston over 100 years ago. Who is Muybridge’s muse in plate 187? A lover, an acquaintance, a professional model, a stranger he had a dalliance with? This simple question triggers a discussion with the viewer about the types of relationships that artists have with their muses. In my earlier ‘Idylls of the Self’ series, I placed myself in the position of muses in Victorian masterpieces, created at a time when women had limited rights, to challenge society’s perceptions of a woman’s role and how that can define who she is. In this new work, I take on the role and persona of the artist’s muse, freezing a moment in time, interplaying modern and alternative photographic techniques to transform Muybridge’s Dancer: plate 187. What is my relationship with the photographer? Who is the photographer – the muse or the person operating the camera? Who controls the artistic process – the muse or the photographer? Who controls the muse? Over a century after Muybridge explored animal locomotion, this work is a new archive of freshly frozen moments in time to inspire
viewers to generate their own stories about Muybridge’s muse. About the artist: KAOS member Louise Anderson is an artist and researcher specialising in printmaking, with a Masters in Art & Space, Kingston University. Her creative process is informed by her fascination with collecting and with delving into archives. Meet the artist: Kingston Museum, Saturday, 18 November, 2 - 4pm Future exhibitions: 31 October - 11 November 2017: Mini Print Prize Exhibition, Printmakers Council, Morley Gallery, 61 Westminster Bridge Road, London SE1 7HT Find out more Louise teaches printmaking and cyanotype workshops at Kew Art Studio. KINGSTON ROTARY
Rotary working with ShelterBox More than half a million Rohingya people are facing fresh perils living in makeshift camps in Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh where the coming cyclone season threatens to wash away their flimsy plastic shelters. Rotarian Liz Odell is currently working in Bangladesh as a response volunteer with the charity ShelterBox. “Conditions are dire, with most people living in small shelters made of flimsy black plastic sheeting and bamboo poles,” reports Liz. “There is little space between the shelters, and the paths between them are a congealing soup of oozing mud.
Supplied by: Janet Bacon - Kingston Rotary programme, but the numbers needing help are challenging, and at times overwhelming. They have an experienced team in Cox’s Bazar working hard with local Rotary contacts and partners to help as many vulnerable families as possible. Kingston Rotary together with other Rotary Clubs have provided funding to assist with this response. Breakfast Group
With the cyclone season fast approaching, there is concern that the camps which have been set up on terraces high above rice paddy fields, are prone to collapse. Liz explained: “Much of the area around the camps is rice paddies – they are under water so the Rohingyas are forced to build their shelters on the precipitous slopes of the surrounding hills. Once the cyclone season arrives, these terraces are likely to collapse.” ShelterBox, a UK based international disaster relief agency specialising in emergency shelter for families displaced by conflict and natural disasters, is making arrangements to bring in aid. This includes portable solar lighting, which has helped reduce genderbased violence in refugee camps worldwide. Tools and tarpaulin will help with waterproof shelter construction, and to bring basic comfort to families without any possessions ShelterBox is also aiming to fly in blankets.
We are launching a breakfast group. Rotary is alive and well in the Royal Borough of Kingston, but we think there is a gap in what we are offering – and we believe this breakfast group will fill that gap. This is for people who want to help in the community, have limited time but could manage an hour first thing in the morning once a month. We would love to tell you more about what we do, and see if you would like to be part of it. Kingston Rotary Club raises funds for good causes and delivers benefit into the community, both at home and overseas – as well as enjoying friendship and fun. If you would like to help your local community, why not think about joining our Rotary Club. To find out how you can join, visit www.kingstonrotaryclub.org.uk or email membership@kingstonrotaryclub.org.uk.
ShelterBox teams had arrived in Bangladesh in response to the worst flooding for decades, but now find themselves responding to a human flood as well. ShelterBox is working with a cluster of other non-governmental organisations on a co-ordinated aid

Winter Beauty Tips
HEALTH & BEAUTY Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local
This time of year, the cold weather can wreak havoc on our skin, regular rainfall can affect our hair regime and of course catching colds or the flu can make us feel a little less than pristine. Below are some ideas on how to prevent feeling this way and keep yourselves bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Colour coordinate Just because it’s grey outside sometimes, it doesn’t mean you have to feel washed out and gloomy. Opt for hues that complement the current season. These might include browns or smoky greys/blues, particularly when it comes to eyeshadow, but potentially for your wardrobe too. We can get away with wearing black a lot more, which is a colour to suit and flatter all, but don’t be afraid to mix in a little pop of colour, like a little red or purple as well. Hair care
Always keep your skin hydrated by keeping up your water intake, use a primer before you do your makeup and try trading in your water-based moisturiser for an oil-base to lock the moisture in. If you have oily skin, try not to go overboard on priming. Try not to go overboard with hot baths/ showers
Avoiding going out with wet hair as much as possible to prevent catching a cold can lead to more regular use of styling appliances. Always condition your hair and apply heat defence sprays before you bust out the hairdryer or straighteners. You can give split ends some natural nourishing aid using coconut oil as well, but ideally, you should have your hair trimmed regular to avoid splitting.
Sitting or standing in scalding hot water can seem appealing when the cold weather kicks in, however, sticking to a more lukewarm temperature can help to retain skin’s moisture, and is better for your hair. Supplement
Invest in warmer wear We can start to get away with big, fuzzy oversized jumpers this time of year. If you still want a flattering look, pair your best, snuggliest sweatshirt with a pair of skinny jeans and ankle boots or a skirt and some over-the-knee boots. Good for all seasons and body shapes! Moisturise and re-energise!
17
Make sure you’re healthy on the inside to really show it on the outside. Keep up your vitamin C and iron intake to keep your energy levels high and your immune system working at its best. Incorporate hearty, vegetable-packed meals into your routine, or at least opt for nutritious and more warming options when eating out like a nice bowl of soup, spicy curry or a rich stew.

GARDENING
November Gardening Tips
Supplied by: Janet Bacon
Planting bare root hedges, roses, trees or shrubs November is the ideal time to plant bare root plants, while the soil is still warm from the summer. They are supplied with no compost around them and not in containers which means that the plants have been lifted directly from the field and sent straight to you with no repotting needed. When planning a new hedge, this works out much cheaper than container plants, so you get a lot more for your money.
manure and water well. The water will help everything sink back into the place and revive your new plant after its big move. If you are planting in a windy area, create a netting or mesh windbreak using stakes. Wind can damage new shrubs but a gentle breeze will strengthen the plant. For a tree, you’ll need a strong stake to help it establish in the first year. Choose a stake about a third of the height of the tree and drive it two feet into the soil (remember to include this when deciding which length to buy). Leave about an inch (3cm) between the stake and the trunk. Gently attach the stem to the stake with a soft tree tie or figure of 8 tree tie, but not too tight.
Plant your bare root plants as soon as they arrive, so that the roots don’t dry out. If it’s not possible to plant right away, store them in their packaging in a cool place. If you need to store them for several weeks, it’s best to heel them in to a spare piece of open ground in the garden. Give the plants a good drink before planting by standing them in a bucket of water. Only plant when the weather is mild and rain is forecast.
Plants need room to spread their roots, so start digging over the top 20cm of earth. Next, dig a hole twice the size of the rootball and about three times as wide. Are you any good at spelling?
LEARNING Supplied by: Celia Osborne Numberworks’n’words
English spelling is a thing some children (and adults) can do and some find so so hard. In the old days teachers said ‘if you read a lot you’ll learn to spell’, but Celia from NumberWorks’nWords says that there’s more to it than that. Some people learn visually, some by hearing and others by doing. Those who learn visually have it lucky – they can just remember what the word ‘looks like’.
Make a phrase to help you remember the hard bit? You guess (U guess),You have a biscuit (U), Big elephants are ugly (beautiful) The committee was full (lots of double letters). Have fun making up silly ideas for spellings. It seems you need to learn lots of words in a different way, but many children can remember spellings better if they ‘story’ them.
How do children learn in school? Schools now teach spelling through phonics. Children learn to build up words using letter sounds and patterns –the trouble is English spelling doesn’t always follow the rules. Sometimes there are 2 (or 3 rules) and you have to know which to follow. It’s so hard!
Teach your hand to spell. Most of us learn better when we do something too. It helps some children to write words while saying them out loud (in whatever silly way helps). Make the paper look pretty! Change the colour of the pen or pencil, write it again, and again (never change colour mid word – allow your hand to flow). Just the different feel of the new pen or pencil can help you remember.
How can I help my child? There are other great ways to learn spelling. Try these: Say words in a funny way: come becomes ‘com-ee’ (emphasising the o); was is ‘wazz’ and what is ‘wu-hat’. Harder - special becomes ‘speck-i-al’ and people becomes ‘pe-o-plee’
At NumberWorks’nWords we have a million and ten different tricks for learning spellings and children tell us that it’s fun too. If your child needs a bit of help with their spelling (not to mention reading, writing and maths), contact us. You won’t regret it!
Emphasise the vowel sounds: Diff – er – ent, Norm – al, En – ter, In – de – pen – dent When you learn the spelling emphasise all the syllables, clap out the word as you say it. Link it with another word that is similar? I always believe my friend or lie to my friend! You hear with your ear. Our favourite colour

SPECIAL FEATURE
Keeping up with the Weather Even living in the UK, some of us get hit hard by the drop in temperature and limited opportunities that come with Winter - but it doesn’t have to feel so gloomy and restricted! There are so many ways to enjoy this time of year, whether it’s inside or outside of the house!
Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local Illustrations by Pippa Leicester
Keep your brain active and stay creative, even if you are staying indoors more Even if you are spending a lot of your time snuggled up under blankets or vegging out in front of the TV, it doesn’t mean you can’t multitask. Puzzle books, sketching, getting ahead on work and taking care of those sit down chores (for example, mending an item of clothing, peeling and preparing vegetables for dinner, making up a weekly meal planner or shopping list) are things that you can do whilst you put your feet up. You could even take up a new hobby. This could range from arts and crafts, eg: painting, woodwork and jewellery making; to music and media, such as learning an instrument or working on some home movie compilations/slideshows to show the family over Christmas; down to putting together some gifts for coming birthdays, christmas and anniversaries.
of stressing later, as well as avoiding cold, wet shopping trips when the weather’s bad. You can home-make gifts for something more meaningful and save money at the same time At very least, start writing out your Christmas list and doing some online shopping while you veg out! You can find some wintertime activities for outside too
Getting ahead on gift planning will save a lot
As long as you’re wrapping up when necessary and staying in doors during any thunderstorms, it isn’t going to harm you to get outdoors this time of year. Why not make a point to go for walks with the family, see the fireworks, take part in photography and nature trails or simply make more efforts to get together and go to the movies or to dinner. It isn’t always the best money-saving option but it’s still something you should treat yourself to on occasion, if only to get you out of the house more. It could benefit you to refer to our Local Events section and see what free events are on at the moment, and you and your friends or family can appreciate the best local festivals, markets and classes in your area together. Indoor events will suit any weather as well, so don’t feel like “going out and getting active” only refers to taking a brisk, intense morning jog, that’ll only lower your motivation. Why not enrol in a dance class or sports club to stay fit and keep out of the

cold, whilst making new friends and having a good time? Lifestyle alterations There is no need to start crash dieting because you’re worried you’ll overdo it at Christmas - this isn’t healthy, and during the chilly season your body could do with some extra nutrients in order to get through it all sans-flu! Simply incorporate some healthier habits where you can, and you may even enjoy the changes. For example, big hearty dinners heaping with vegetables will provide you with the vitamins you need to keep illnesses at bay, so more home-cooked meals that get the whole family together is a great idea, as well as drinking more fresh squeezed juice and anti-oxidising teas. Don’t be afraid to bulk up on hot breakfasts a little, as a delicious cooked breakfast or bowl of porridge can really set you up for the day and will help if you’re feeling a little run down. As you may hear all the time, one of the biggest problems for us is not drinking enough water, so even though you’re feeling a little less dehydrated when you’re cold keep on topping up the tank with plenty of water. If you find it difficult to drink that much water due to the taste or the blandness of it, try fruit-infused water or weak caffeinefree herbal tea. Even drinking squash can help make up the difference a little. Just try not to overdo it on the sugar! Feel free to snuggle up on the sofa with your loved ones a little more and indulge in movies and snacking, but when you can, try to alternate some healthier alternatives to snack on like fruits, nuts and rice cakes. Also take some time to stretch your legs now

and then because your joints can become really stiff during the cold season. Keeping on top of chores will get your blood flowing and warm you up a little while you work, or running to your local supermarket or favourite coffee place for a treat will get you moving for reasons you’d like. Its these little things that can make a difference to your general health, the way switching sugar in hot drinks with honey or sweeteners can be effective.

Autumn inspiration at Home Glorious, blustery, blue-skied and golden leaved, Autumn is upon us. In leafy Kingston and Surbiton, Nature’s multicoloured transformation is all around us. Let us take a moment of wonder, like a child, at one of Nature’s most beautiful spectacles. It’s a teaching we find in yoga - appreciate every little moment. Autumn is a time of change - which brings the possibility of new beginnings. The rhythm of going back to school is ingrained in us since childhood. Below, we will look at how to create an sense of Autumnal change in our home. This sense of change is rooted in tradition. The Old Celtic festival of Samhain - pronounced Sawain, and now better known as Halloween - marked the transition from one year to the next. It was the Celts’ New Year - when they believed the threshold between our world and other worlds narrowed, so spirits or ancestors could appear. • So how can we create Autumn rituals which mean something to us, here and now? • Packing away summer clothes • Bring out cosy feel-good knits and our favourite pair of boots. • Cook more native earthy root vegetables, with perhaps a kick of spice • Take time to look at what changes we want to make in our own lives • Yoga at Home Did you know that the physical practice of yoga is intended to prepare our bodies to be comfortable when we sit and invite the mind to clear? COMPETITION REVIEW
Salt & Vinegar Traditional Fish and Chips Restaurant, Takeaway - and more We’ve found a succulent treasure trove of flavours for you for this month’s competition. This fish and chips restaurant and take away which recently opened has more than the usual traditional fish and chips, yet very competitive prices. The fish is bought fresh every day, which meant the food was beautifully succulent. The Grilled King Prawn starters were large and tender with tasty home-made sauces. Whitebait was lightly battered and the batter on the cod had a crispy casing, with a moist flaky centre of fresh fish. For a healthy option try the grilled fish or fish cakes, salad and new potatoes. I can recommend the Sea Bream Fillet with homemade garlic butter, mushy peas and new potatoes. If fish isn’t your thing, there are sausages, burgers, nuggets, pies, pasties, spring rolls and numerous sides (meat is halal). Being licensed, they also offer wine, beer, cider, as well as soft & hot drinks

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant didn’t have that overpowering oily smell either. They offer a Children’s Menu at £3.50, OAP menu Mondays, Gluten Free Tuesdays and Uber Eats delivery service. A tasty place to host meetings, relax with friends or simply read a book! Definitely worth a visit! CONGRATULATIONS TO LAST MONTH’S WINNER, ERICA BISHOP! WE HOPE YOU ENJOY “AN EVENING WITH MICHAEL PARKINSON”!
