Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to Everyone! Wow, what a month and year we have had! We have picked up several new advertisers this month again! What’s more important is the types of new businesses who put their faith into you – the readers! This month we have launched a brand new section – Health and Fitness , which is provided to us by PhysioExtra on page 19. Just in time to plan ahead into the New year! If you have not already done so, enter this months’ competition on page 40! We have a meal for 2 with a bottle of wine at Pizza Express, on the High Street. I have been to one of their midweek music nights and it’s a great venue and a good night out, make sure you check out Leanna’s review. I’d like to give a special thanks to Rosella from Klicksmart Photography for yet another beautiful front cover! If you’re looking for a talented photographer, be sure to check our her advert on page 4. There is never enough space to give thanks to the people who have supported me throughout this year. I have to always be cautious not to forget anyone, but if you have read the magazine, you will know there are so many thanks needed. It has been a very busy year, and on reflection, it’s been worthwhile. We are now ready to launch the new part of the website and you will be seeing our launch date soon. I have to give a special thanks to Leanna. She has been a rock since winning the Apprentice Of the Year Award from Kingston Borough Council, and without her I think Omni Local would be looking at a very different 2016. Thank you for every second you have spent with me and my mad idea of making a magazine…….

LOCAL BUSINESS

This section is all about local business owners who support Omni Local, and we would like you to get to know these hard working, dedicated people. This month I am talking to Mr. Mark Luigi, of All Your Odd Jobs.

Supplied by: Mark Luigi - AllYourOddJobs

Q1: Hi Mark, could you please tell our readers how long you’ve been in this business? A1: I’ve been doing this job for 40 years now. Q2: What got you interested in this line of work?

to be many cases of blocked, frozen gulleys outside of the home, frozen pipes in lofts and outdoor garden taps.

A2: To be honest I sort of fell into the job role, after being unemployed for 8 weeks or so. However I do relish the opportunity to meet new people and to travel all over the areas. I’m not really one for staying in one place for too long.

Q7: Great! And what is the best way for people to get in touch with you?

Q3: As your business name suggests, you take care of a wide variety of jobs, what sort of jobs are you called out for most?

A7: Customers can email, send a text, or call me on the phone. I will then arrange a time that is convenient for them to come and take a look, and to offer a free job quote. Q8: Excellent, and finally… Do you have any advice for readers who are looking to get into a similar profession?

Q3: The majority of calls I get are for plumbing and gas jobs mostly - for leaks or blockages, I’m your man. Other jobs I can offer help with include refurbishing bathrooms and kitchens, mending gutter leaks, and replacing taps.

Q8: If you’re starting up after leaving school, look into getting an apprenticeship. If you’re a little bit older, however, it may be worth starting a college course to work towards your career. If possible, try and get in touch with a local builder.

Q4: Do you cover many local areas? A4: I will travel anywhere that I’m needed. Q5: What sort of establishments do you provide services for?

Q6: What sort of problems are more commonly expected during the Winter period?

Just remember, if you do get the position you’ve been aiming for, always turn off your phone while you’re at work. Experience for this area of work is vital, as is being friendly and helpful towards clients. It is also essential that when you finish a job, you always tidy up the site thoroughly - as if your life depends on cleaning up!

Q6: This time of year, a lot of people need to start up their central heating, following a lack of use over the Summer. There also tends

LOVE KINGSTON

The Gift that Keeps Giving this Christmas Time

Supplied by: Sorrel Parsons - Love Kingston

As the nights draw in and we get ready to relax and enjoy time with the people we love the most, it feels good to be festive. From small children eagerly awaiting Santa to arrive with long dreamt of presents, to that gigantic family feast (with or without sprouts), the greatest gifts of the season may not be what ends up in our stockings but the love, laughter and faith for the future that we give each other. Yet Christmas can be a lonely and isolating time of year for some residents in Kingston, a story that continues year on year. But what if you could give the gift that kept on giving to your neighbours in need? From isolation to integration with Love Kingston Over the last three years Love Kingston has been successful in establishing a grassroots place-based fundraising model. We’re now looking to the future and building the Love Kingston Legacy fund that will provide a sustainable source of income to support the changing needs of the community forevermore. Our annual grant-making for the next three years will focus on tackling isolation – so people feel they belong in this special borough. Why might you give through us?

What do our supporters say? “A key success of Love Kingston has been to connect communities together to meet the needs of the poorest in the community. COMMUNITY PERSON

Ellen Cooper

This Christmas, hundreds of people in Kingston will give up their time for good causes in the community. Many charities rely heavily on the kindness and generosity of local people who give up their valuable time to become volunteers. Momentum children’s charity, based in Kingston-upon-Thames, has an invaluable team of volunteers from all walks of life. From selling heart-shaped balloons on Valentine’s Day to knitting miniature scarves for dozens of tiny ‘Mo the Owl’ mascot toy owls at Christmas, there are volunteer roles for everyone. For 11 years, Momentum has supported thousands of children with cancer and life-limiting conditions across SW London and Surrey. Its Family Support Programme provides emotional support and owns two holiday cabins in the New Forest where families can go for respite breaks. The charity also refurbishes Paediatric Units in hospitals (including Kingston Hospital) to enhance the healing environment for children undergoing treatment. Momentum’s Volunteer Manager Ellen Cooper-de Groote knows all too well the worth of each and every volunteer, whether they attend one event or they volunteer on a regular basis. Each volunteer makes a huge contribution to the charity. Mother-of-two Ellen, who lives with her husband and two teenage daughters in Lower Sunbury, says that her volunteers get an enormous amount of satisfaction, knowing that their work helps the charity to continue supporting sick children and their families. She says: “We have a ‘bank’ of loyal volunteers. Many are parents of Momentum’s children, or friends of the families we support. People hear about us and want to get involved because it truly is an amazing charity.” “As a volunteer, when you help wrap presents for Momentum’s Santa’s Grotto or shake a bucket raising money and awareness for Momentum, you know that you have played a part in helping to bring a smile to a sick child’s face .”

7

Ellen, who previously worked as a solicitor in the City, says it was her personal experience of Momentum, who supported her while her daughter was ill in hospital, that led to her working for the charity. “Momentum sent flowers and gifts to my other daughter so that she wouldn’t feel left out. They cared for us at a time when we really needed it. They still do. And I now have a wonderful job that also allows me time to focus on my daughter.” Ellen is always looking for new volunteers. If you are keen to get involved please contact her at ellen@moment-um.org or visit www. moment-um.org. CARE IN THE COMMUNITY

THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local CHARITY

Making Things Safer for your Family this Winter In order to make sure our loved ones stay well this Winter, it’s important that we do what we can to look out for them, especially older or less able relatives. Encourage exercise. With the cold weather taking its toll and a lot of people feeling more run down, it’s important to stay active and healthy. Why not ensure they get some safe, at-home activity by doing some calming yoga or fun, upbeat “dancersizes” as a group? Or, simply suggest a nice walk and head out to do some light shopping. Alternatively, there are lots of fun groups and associations throughout Kingston, specifically for older people.

leaving laptops on beds or from candles that aren’t lit in a safe area, free of clutter. Make sure you’ve got smoke/carbon monoxide alarms fitted in the home that are in full working order.

Even heading out for a cup of coffee together or spending a few hours at the park is better than being cooped up and staying in all the time. Prevent nasty falls by eliminating risks. Some people neglect their own safety without even realising it. Small changes can really make a difference. For example, a lot of people come home, remove their wet shoes and then walk around in socks or tights, which could lead to slipping on hard floors - not to mention if poorly placed, the water running off their shoes can start to puddle and become a hazard for anyone passing through.

Always inform your family members of the dangers of poor placements and overheating appliances too, as you can’t always keep an eye on things yourself. Another safe bet is to switch off all the plug sockets in your bedroom when you aren’t using it. Make sure they’re safe whilst on the road (if they drive).

Take care of any fire risks too.

Try to ensure that they have all their supplies fully stocked, such as an emergency kit containing flares, cat litter, car phone chargers, blankets, scrapers and a first aid kit. Not to mention a full tank. This will give them all they need to get out of a serious jam, if they face any problems during a long drive.

A lot of fires start from inside the home, in unlikely places. It isn’t always just a case of leaving the oven on or forgetting about a lit cigarette. It can be from something as simple as an overheating electric blanket (which may be used more during the Winter), from

You should also ask them where they’re headed to and the time they expect to arrive, so that you can know if something’s gone wrong. If possible, find out what route they’re taking and make sure they know how to get there.

If possible, try to keep walkways clear, inside the home and outdoors, and maybe even encourage your family to wear gripped slippers and shoes during the wet/icy season.

Surviving Christmas If you’re dreading Christmas and the hype surrounding all the festivities, here are some thoughts before you get caught up in the race to meet expectations:

LOCAL CHARITY

THIS MONTH’S Supplied by: Jill Fletcher - Fircroft Trust CHARITY

1. Traditions were started by someone in the past. There is nothing wrong with creating your own traditions. One of the main stresses around this time is trying to meet the expectations of others (and even your own). Start by planning which ones are important to you and think about ditching others. 2. Perfection cannot be achieved. Be kind to yourself if you find things aren’t going the way you expect them to – sometimes it’s the imperfections that make a moment special. 3. You can not please everyone all the time. If you manage Christmas in a way that suits you, you will be more relaxed and more able to enjoy the festivities and those personalities you find difficult.

go and can even get excluded by their own families. That is why each year The Fircroft Trust needs to raise funds to enable us to stay open during the Christmas season and in particular, on Christmas Day.

4. The season is full of social events. Choose which ones you want to be part of and learn to say ‘no’ to others. It is important to have some time for yourself – plan that into your days.

Last year we welcomed over 30 people with mental health issues on Christmas day. Everyone had a lovely meal, played games and they all received a small gift. One lady who attended last year was asked why she wasn’t opening the gift she received and she said, “This is the only present I’ll get this Christmas, and I want to savour opening at home by myself.”

5. Christmas is expensive. Plan your budget ahead of time – and stick to it. Nothing is worse than starting the New Year in debt. 6. Be practical about your own mental health needs: eat properly, get enough sleep and exercise, watch the alcohol – it can be a depressant. Keep talking – feelings of being overwhelmed need to be expressed and where possible, delegated! Helping other people will give you a feel-good boost too.

Help us to support people by supporting us this year. Contact Jill or Hilary at The Fircroft Trust 96 Ditton Road, Surbiton, Surrey, KT6 6RH Tel: 0208 399 1772 www.thefircrofttrust.org Charity Number 802456

7. Beware of thinking that others are always having a better time than yourself. It can increase the feeling of anxiety and depression. Christmas can be a challenge for most of us, but it is far worse for those with mental health issues. They often have nowhere to

Christmas

LOCAL HISTORY Supplied by: Mike Seigel - Kingston Tour Guides

Christmas is coming – and, as the ditty goes, the goose is getting fat! Did you know that as recently as the late 1940s, geese were auctioned in Kingston’s ancient market place on Christmas Eve? The market place dates back to the late 12th century and has been flourishing ever since, adding to the town’s prosperity throughout the centuries. Mary Tudor granted the town extra market days in return for its loyalty to her during Wyatt’s abortive rebellion early in her reign. A century later, Charles I (who was later to fight the Civil War and then lose his head!) passed a law whereby no other town within a seven mile radius could hold a market, thus giving Kingston a monopoly within the area which did a great deal to boost the local economy. The market place thrived, especially throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries when stage coaches would stop in Kingston as their first port of call on the road southwest to Portsmouth. Many people would stay overnight in one of the numerous coaching inns, such as the Druid’s Head – the only inn to survive to this day as a pub, but with a different name. And did you know that it was in a room upstairs at the Druid’s Head that Jerome K Jerome wrote his opening chapters of his famous book, ‘Three Men in a Boat’? The market place was also the setting for an annual football match each Shrove Tuesday, probably dating back to the Middle Ages. This often led to such drunken revelry and riotous behaviour that it was eventually banned during the reign of Queen Victoria.

11

I hope that you might reflect on some of these historical facts as you enjoy your Christmas shopping in Kingston, and especially when wandering round the Chirstmas Market. If you pop into Hobbs in Church St, you can look above to see the beams dating back to Tudor times when this was a hostelry run by one of Henry VIII’s valets, who would leave his day job looking after the King at Hampton Court to run his Kingston pub in the evenings! If you are interested in the varied history of our town, why not join one of our tours, led by specially trained volunteers? During winter, the walks take place every first Sunday of the month. During April they take place every Sunday until the end of September. The charge is £5 per adult or you can arrange a special tour for you and your friends at a time to suit you. For further information please ring 020 8399 0160. OR … you might like to become a guide yourself! If so, we are running courses from 16th January. GARDENING SECTION

Auntie Planty’s Gardening Mailbag

Supplied by: Valerie Munro - Auntie Planty

Q1: How can I keep my real Christmas tree from dropping needles? A1: Before even thinking of decorating your fresh tree, saw about one cm off the bottom of the stem. As quickly as you can, plunge this cut end of the stem into a bucket of water and allow the tree to stand like that in a cool place for about 24 hours. This will allow the plant to re-hydrate, and will go some way to slowing down the inevitable needle drop. If you have a custom-made tree stand with an integrated water reservoir, check it for leaks. Having filled it up with water on the Christmas tree’s first day, don’t forget to check this level regularly. It’s important that the cut end of the stem constantly remains below the water level, otherwise the tree will stop drinking, and then rapidly dry out. Q2: What is the significance of using mistletoe at Christmas? A2: Druid priests used mistletoe two hundred years before the birth of Christ in their winter celebrations, and ancient Celts believed that the plant has magical powers as it had no roots but was able to remain green. But it was the Romans we have to thank – they saw it as a symbol of peace. Among Romans, enemies who met under mistletoe would lay down their weapons and embrace. So, that’s why we hang it over the front door, ready to pucker up and pounce at every opportunity. Q3: I have a holly plant in the garden that has a lot of lovely red berries on it now – how can I save these for Christmas decorations? A3: You have probably already spotted that pigeons are already showing a great deal of interest in your plant, and I would advise you to get some horticultural fleece and cover as many of the branches that you need. But you’ll need to be quick.. Otherwise, it’ll be a case of using leafy twigs with the subtle addition of some artificial berries, in place of the real thing. Q4: Every year I buy one of those lovely 13

poinsettia plants, but they never seem to last very long. A4: If you remember they originate from Mexico, and thrive in the hot and humid atmosphere there, you’ll understand that our dry, centrally heated air is just about the worst treatment we can give them. They need plenty of light, but not in direct sunlight. Make sure that they are placed out of the draught of a constantly opening door. Don’t overwater the plant, or leave it to sit in standing water. If this all sounds very complicated then consider this – if you feel comfortable, then the chances are, the plant will too.

Spring Cleaning

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

Now is the perfect time for you to have a good clean up and clear out. This is especially true if you’ve got a particularly hectic Christmas on this year, with loads of people coming in and out and you getting a lot more use out of your oven. Below are some of the less obvious solutions for getting things in shape: Check your furniture Make sure no chairs, tables or shelves need mending and reupholster where needed, as damages can be hard to ignore and odours may get locked away. If you’re looking to impress over Christmas when the family come to visit, or you want to start the year anew and surrounded by comfortable and stable furnishings, be sure to check on those creaky doors, unhinged cupboards and wobbly tables.

unstained. These aren’t the most enjoyable jobs in the world, but they become a lot easier when proper maintenance is practised and you give them a regular seeing to. Always ensure you are well stocked with bleach, loo blocks, bathroom cleaners and plenty of sponges/ rubber gloves.

These sort of fixes can be handled simply, or you can call in a handyman or carpenter to give you some assistance, such as All Your Odd Jobs or London Carpentry (please see ads for details on how to get in touch). Alternatively, if you have the funds you can look into replacing furniture entirely to suit your needs.

Remember the floors It’s not a daily task for everyone to go around with a mop and broom, or to vacuum every room, but you’ll be amazed how many germs carpets and floors can pick up from spills, general dirt build up and pet dander.

Don’t neglect the bathroom Just because it’s the room we use to cleanse ourselves and practice proper hygiene, it doesn’t mean it won’t require some regular TLC. Check to see if tiles need regrouting or replacing; clear away any left hairballs or bathtub rings; unclog any blocked drains and check that your toilet is freshened up and

14

Make a point after everyone has left the party and you’ve cleared your decorations away to give all the floors the once-over, and start fresh when the new year hits. Sweep away any dust and debris, then find a good gentle/multi-surface cleaner for hard surfaces, or vacuum and shampoo your carpets for a great way to freshen things up.

Inspire your child to read How does your child feel about reading? Some children devour books and that’s great, but if your child isn’t that keen, what’s the solution? Ignore it – they’ll read when they’re ready? Or make them read every day, however tortious it is?

LEARNING SECTION Supplied by: Celia Osbourne NumberWorks’n’Words

At NumberWorks’nWords we know how frustrating it is when your child doesn’t like reading or only wants to look at comics or pictures, but there is a way to inspire them. Want to hear a good story? Your child might not want to read, but chances are, they still love a good story. I wouldn’t mind betting that they also love spending time with mum, dad, grandma or whoever their carer is. So the answer to the reading dilemma is simple: Read to your children! But not just the ‘Rainbow Fairies’ or ‘Beast Quest’ type books. Read them the classics. Those ripping good yarns that you enjoyed as a child. Those books that they wouldn’t be able to read but which will extend them and introduce them to new vocabulary. Books with beautiful worlds and magical characters. Or write a good story?

So just by reading some of the classics, not only will you both get something magical out of it but you’ll see your child’s comprehension improve too. Our NumberWorks’nWords recommendations: • Tom’s Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce.

Just because a child can hardly read, doesn’t mean that they can’t use phrases like ‘vile destruction’ when writing (even if misspelt). And yes, that was a phrase actually written by one of our amazing NumberWorks’nWords’ 6 year olds - even though she can barely read!

• The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken

At NumberWorks’nWords we’ll help them reach a level where they can read the classics themselves. We’ll talk about what they’ve read and help them use what they’ve learnt in their own writing, spelling those allimportant words. Most of all, we’ll give them loads of individual attention and support and they’ll love it. All of our children do.

• The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis

• The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolken • Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll

And the really happy ending If your child is struggling with comprehension, despite having a good reading level, it may be because comprehension papers are often taken from classic fiction, with figurative language and words, phrases and sayings that are no longer in use.

15

• Smith by Leon Garfield Reading to your child is a simple solution to common problem and it works. And if you’re stuck with your child’s reading or would like some more recommendations, why not get in touch with me, Celia at surbiton@ numberworks.com Tel: 0208 399 1234 Happy reading!

Skirting Board Maintenance Skirting boards can be the perfect finishing touch after decorating, but you may find over time that there is that frustrating area where the skirting seems to pull away from the wall, or the wood looks rotten, or starts to split. This could really be a pain when you’ve got family coming in and out and tripping over loose skirting, and can really let down the appearance of your home for guests. The best step is to replace it. Below we’ll explain how to do so yourself.

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

What you’ll need: • New Skirting Board (For a natural wood finish and accuracy, you can take a picture of the current skirting and show it to your local hardware professional in order to find a match, or take a piece to your nearest lumber yard or carpenter.) • Hammer and Chisel • Crowbar (if applicable) Handsaw • Flexible filler/Wood Filler and a Filler Knife

the tape measure and pencil, then cut the board at a 45 degree angle. 3. Before attaching the new skirting, make sure the wall is clean and dry.

• Screws and Wall Fixings • Paint or Varnish

4. Fix the skirting to the wall by sinking screws into wall fixings. Fill in any gaps (if there are any) with filler and use the knife to smooth the edges.

• Drill and Drill bits • Coping Saw • Pencil and Tape Measure Method: 1. First, remove the skirting from the wall by prising it off with the hammer and chisel. Start from the centre and work your way to the edge and along the lengths. Remove all the screws and fixings before you pull it away (which may require a crowbar). 2. MOTORING SECTION

Driving in Winter Ice is probably the most hazardous condition when driving, especially black ice, which is clear and a lot harder to spot. Because a lot of drivers don’t notice that they are driving on ice, they don’t always reduce their speeds. Below are some tips on avoiding the dangers of driving in Winter. Only drive when necessary Don’t jump into your car just to go on a late night run for ice cream, or if you do, don’t feel like you can’t turn back if things are looking a bit troublesome. If you can, shorten your shopping trips to once a week, on a mild day, so that you can stock up for a few days without putting yourself in danger. Inform people about where you’re going Let your loved ones know you’re heading out, possibly which route you are taking, and how long you’ll be gone. If possible, send them a text or give them a call when you reach your destination. You should also let the person you are visiting know when you’ll be arriving, as they’ll know if something has gone wrong. Leave a little extra time before you head out You may need another ten minutes or so to make sure your car is ready to drive or to warm it up before you head to work, so don’t let your vehicle troubles make you run late. Plan ahead and don’t rush. Don’t park too closely Leave a little extra space between other cars, and away from the pavement, as your car may skid slightly and move a little further than you plan for. If you have a bit of a sudden start, you’re a lot more likely to bump into things if the road is frosted over. Check your windows

18

Supplied by: Leanna Carl-Omni Local Don’t even think about starting up the car if everything is frosted over - make sure windows are clear, and try to de-fog them before you set off. There is nothing more dangerous than impaired vision, especially if it’s already dark out. Know how to control yourself Don’t panic! If you do start to skid, remember to steer gently into the direction you are sliding. Never stamp on the brakes or take your hands off the wheel, and try switching to a higher gear if you need more grip. Contact professionals like AutoRefinish for more advice (see advert)

Christmas: A Seasonal Survival Guide for Sceptics

HEALTH & FITNESS Supplied by: Andrew Sillett - On Sight Media

It’s probably best to just face up to the fact that Christmas is not the best time of year to start a virtuous new health regime. Without wishing to add to the surfeit of tedious annual advice about avoiding piling on pounds by eating too many mince pies and binge watching HBO box sets, it’s well worth making plans for getting fit after Christmas. Of course, New Year resolutions are more observed in their breach, so how to avoid another year of good intentions deflating like a limp party balloon? “It’s really hard to stay motivated to keep fit by yourself. Only a few top athletes can do it,” says Leon Almashan, head of PhysioExtra, based in Ham, which offers a holistic approach to health and wellbeing. Crash diets tend not to be the answer, he says, as you usually end up putting the weight back on again and this can be dispiriting.

the risk of the these illnesses by as much as the following percentages: • heart disease and stroke 35% • type 2 diabetes 50% • colon cancer 50%

Unfortunately, the simplest way to lose weight long-term is to burn off more calories than you consume through physical exercise – and this involves considerably more effort than sitting up in bed to have fag, or repeated trips to the fridge. It’s hard to believe looking at the faces of joggers in Richmond Park, but exercise really does make you feel better by boosting endorphin levels.

• breast cancer 20% • osteoarthritis 83% • hip fracture 68% • depression 30% • dementia 30% If exercise were a pill, everyone would take it. Rather than blow more money on a gym membership you never use, why not invest in a one-to-one personal training course?

It also helps you lose weight by raising your metabolism and increasing muscle mass so that you burn more calories even after you finish. One of life’s mysteries is why doing something bad feels so good, and doing something healthy is such a drag, but having your own trainer really can help put you on the path to good health. Not only will it make you feel, look and sleep better; exercise can also save your life.

After haemorrhaging cash on all those unwanted presents during the annual orgy of depraved consumerism that Christmas has become, isn’t it time you invested in your own health? SPECIAL FEATURE

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

For me, it really is. There is nothing I find more enjoyable than wintery nights, giftgiving and spending more time with the family. Not to mention that opportunity to think about the new year and get a whole new start for 2016. If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed about ending 2015, hopefully reading on will inspire you to end it with joy and excitement, with as little stress as possible. Start some fun workshops. Why not get the kids involved in decorating? They’ll love to help make some Christmas ornaments for the tree. Or, give them a hand in making festive greeting cards. Not only do arts and crafts keep the kids occupied during days off and weekends (especially if the weather’s gloomy!) but it allows them to stay productive and use their skills and knowledge a little more while school’s out.

Alternatively, just slim down the numbers... Don’t spend every minute of every day surrounded by frantic family members, or minding children - take a break and go for a coffee with a friend. They may have some ideas on how to pull things together, or they can take your mind off things. Delegate!

Remember to take time for yourself. Don’t fall into the category of groaners who dread the word “Christmas” and immediately think of bank balances. Whether “me-time” for you means vegging out on the sofa in fuzzy pyjamas, binging on TV shows; or taking a wintery walk through the park to figure things out - do it!

Whether you’ve got a partner to rely on, you have older children to help out, or your friends can set aside some time, remember you’re not Santa! My Mum comes close, with her ability to create an amazing Christmas every single year... But we’re all human. Ask for help in the kitchen, or with the shopping! If you’re thinking, “I don’t do that stuff anyway”; or you don’t go all out, try to think about how much work your loved ones might be putting in. Offer help where you can, and you’ll probably find the holidays even more enjoyable from the memories made along the way. Take plenty of pictures or videos. Document the moments spent with your nearest and dearest! Even if the pictures create a little embarrassment, you’ll look back on them with a smile. I know I’ve

Have some fun! With Christmas dinners, festive work parties and New Year’s firework-filled events, the 25th isn’t the only day we have to look forward to (or panic about!). Soak up some Christmas cheer by spending a night off with people you care about, or haven’t seen in a while. personally winced at the phrase, “I’ll put the pics on Facebook later!”, but whether or not I like the angles, the memories are more vivid, and over time the snaps become treasures. It’s great to have something to show your kids or grandkids one day after all, and it’s good to laugh at yourself. If you get any good shots, you could always use them to create next year’s Christmas cards or make photo collages. You don’t have to own a selfiestick, or an expensive camera, you just have to make the effort (and possibly pull a few reluctant posers together!).

23

You could even host a charity Christmas event. If you have a lot of fun ideas for a fête, you could create a small admission fee for people all over to join, and put it towards your chosen charity or even put it away for the new year. That is, if you have a little time to spare or you’ve got a quieter Christmas planned. The possibilities are endless, but it’s important that you try to enjoy it while it’s here. What better way to set up a new year than to end 2015 with a bang?

Victor Frankenstein

Supplied by: Leanna Carl and redemption through the association of a brilliant young medical student: Victor Von Frankenstein, who is portrayed by “Last King of Scotland” and “X Men: First Class” lead, James McAvoy. He soon becomes witness to the evolution of the legendary Doctor Frankenstein.

Though the timing is a little late for it’s slightly ‘Halloween’ theme, this film is definitely worth a trip to the cinema this month! Going back to the origins of a legendary spooky story, “Harry Potter” and “The Woman in Black” star Daniel Radcliffe tells the tale of Frankenstein’s monster from the very different perspective of Igor Strausman. The troubled, but very clever assistant, Igor has quite a dark past behind him, but he soon finds friendship

With an exciting and dynamic twist on the classic horror story, Igor plays a big part in Victor’s plans. They both share the vision that through science, they’ll be able to provide groundbreaking research into immortality. Unfortunately, as the old story tells, Victor’s experiments go too far, and he becomes possessed by his breakthroughs. This leads to some very horrific consequences, and leaves his friend and protege Igor as the only person who can save him from descending into madness, and from his terrifying creation.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation From the man who also brought us “Jack Reacher” (another Cruise masterpiece), this time we find IMF agent Ethan Hunt on a search for a group of rogue agents who go by the name of ‘Syndicate’. He calls all of his colleagues together to help bring them down. After foiling one of their operations, Ethan gets captured, but is aided in his escape by a mysterious woman.

This could be a great Christmas gift if you know any movie lovers and Tom Cruise fans! The latest installment to the Mission Impossible series has landed, and it is a great watch for fans of action and thrillers. Following so many twists and perils, as well as dozens of explosions - you wouldn’t think there would be this much more to come - well there is!

25

However, the woman has her own agenda when it comes to Syndicate, meaning the complex crossings between her and Ethan lead to some major gameplay and danger from both sides. Ethan soon discovers IMF has been shut down, and therefore must run solo to shut down the criminal organisation. Confusion and intrigue turns plans on their head - can our hero complete yet another seemingly impossible mission and get out alive?

That Time of Year, Again! It’s that time of year when people make New Year’s resolutions. Go to the gym, lose weight, be nice to the husband, take more holidays, spend less time at work... You know the sort of thing; I expect you have done it yourself.

BUSINESS SECTION Supplied by: David Wimblett of 7 Training

Trouble is, that within a few days, certainly a few weeks, all the good intentions are gone, and people slip back into their old ways. We all do it. I’ve been meaning to go pike fishing again for the last 10 years. Well it’s exactly the same in business. Goals are set for all manner of things: sales targets, new customers, credit control, production, number of client calls a day, to name just a few. Business plans are crafted. Social media campaigns are started. Regular updates to websites are talked about. The list goes on. But again most don’t even see the lightof-day and those that do quickly fall by the wayside. ‘There’s always another day’ people satisfy themselves with thinking. However, I can assure you that this is no way to run your business and certainly not if you want it to be a successful one. So, what’s the answer? Just one thing – discipline. It’s an easy word to say, to talk about even, but it’s so unbelievably hard to put into practice as so many things are allowed to get in the way.

shouldn’t be developed around the need for that skill; but then this gets us on to a much wider subject. Instead, the plan should have been to develop that skill first. Of course another big road-block is accountability; the fear of not meeting an intended objective. Let’s face, it if you don’t start something you can’t really fail can you? Wrong! This is where I help my clients. I work closely with my clients to ensure that the goals they set match not only their ambitions but also their capabilities. We might break down a goal that will take a year to bring home into daily and weekly targets. These can be far less daunting to think about and far easier to manage. In addition I give motivation and support. If you would like to give your business New Year resolutions a better chance of success this year then contact me and mention Omni Local. I have a present for you.

Things like: lack of time, a lack of skill, knowledge, money, procrastination, motivation, experience, belief and support. Now you might be thinking that some of those reasons are real, valid excuses for failure. But are they? Because, for example, if a business lacks a certain skill then a plan

Season’s Greetings – Goodbye 2015, Welcome 2016

FINANCE SECTION Supplied by: Mukesh Savani - Foster Denovo

Is 2016 going to be better than 2015? The answer to that question is entirely up to you. Do you have many years’ experience or one year’s experience many times over? One thing that will make a difference in 2016 is to start the journey of 21st century financial planning. The four essential pillars of modern day financial planning are: Financial planning – as opposed to financial advice. This allows you to clarify your future objectives and goals with greater clarity, rather than just focusing on products you may have bought in the past. In my opinion, it’s the difference between looking at a sketch of your future dream house and detailed architects drawings, as opposed to focusing on what bricks and mortar you have. You can also look at risk management and capacity for loss to minimise the effects of the external environment on your future plans, whilst still aiming to ensure they are achieved. This would include regularly addressing changes in personal circumstances and the effects of future budget changes, taxation and legislation. Cash-flow modelling – following the financial plan, the cashflow modelling allows you to model your existing and future income, expenditures, assets and liabilities and taxes. By modelling these, you can make decisions about the future for you and your family with greater certainty and aims to make sure you never run out of money. It also enables tax optimisation strategies to be used. Money management – This will enable you to manage all your investments, including ISAs, pensions and properties in a tax efficient manner and manage them with

your objectives and timescales in mind whilst mitigating taxes and reducing risk. Estate planning – This is essential in the modern world. How can you retain control over your assets and direct them to your future generations whilst minimising Inheritance Tax? In addition, it is important to address how you can pass your assets down the bloodline and away from potential future disasters like divorces of your children, grandchildren and generations using familycontrolled trusts. So, what’s the next step? A good start is to have an initial meeting with Mukesh Savani, a Financial Planner specialising in these areas. He can provide an initial Discovery meeting free of cost to you. After which, it would be clear if there are issues to be addressed and then you can work together on creating a strategy and timescale of actions. Mukesh will always agree costs with you before carrying out any work. Protecting your family’s future can be more straightforward than you think. If you would like to learn more about your options and opportunities, please call Mukesh Savani on 0207 469 2800 / 07948 543839 or email mukesh.savani@fosterdenovo.com.

Buying a House in Winter

PROPERTY SECTION Supplied by: Leanna Carl - Omni Local

There is no time like the present when it comes to seeking out your dream home! The housing market can be quite unusual, as some potential buyers will literally fall for a house because of a simple feature, such as an additional bathroom or an enormous walk-in closet. Others will over analyze and won’t skip any of the intricate details before putting all their hopes into it. These different types of buyer tend to put completely different values onto a house, meaning prices can sometimes fluctuate quite rapidly. Although this doesn’t mean

RESTAURANT REVIEW

We’ve Been to Visit La Luna Di Luca this Month... What a lovely setting it was to sit right beside the illuminated river! The staff were warm and attentive and presented us with a fab Sardinian menu made up of a variety of delicious meals and sides. With an authentic pizza stove making fresh to order pizzas right in front of you, you’ll really feel the atmosphere when dining on their rich and varied cuisine. Everything was cooked to perfection and packed with an array of flavours. Whilst we dove into our heavenly courses and sipped our cold, refreshing beverages by candlelight, we also had the pleasure of listening in on some of the jazz music at next door’s Bagley & Shakespeare. The decor was great and with the addition of candles on every table we really enjoyed

the relaxing and warming atmosphere. This place is a real treat for those ending a chilly day of Christmas shopping, be sure to pay them a visit! Details can be found at www. lalunadiluca.co.uk.
