Happy Mother’s Day! Hello Everyone! As always, I find it hard not to open by saying Thank you…!! But this month it has been especially hard on this edition as it is our 20th issue, which means we’ve been going for two years! There are so many to thank- too many to say on here…

Contents:

However, I would like to say thank you to everyone who has shown Omni Local support, and to all you readers who keep this little magazine going. Last month was especially hard, with all the floods and heavy rain. I think it was hard to stay positive and I hope the bad weather is about to change for everyone. This month there are two things happening that I’d like to mention. The first thing happening on 30th March is of course Mother’s Day. Take a look at Leanna’s special Mother’s Day editorial on page 26-27. She has done a lot of research, writing facts about Mother’s Day and how it came to be, and she also has some cracking treat ideas for Mum. Why not cook her a nice meal, featured in our Cooking Corner section? Or check out Health Works and everything they have to offer, on pages 24/25?

Chair of Kingston Arts Áine grew up in Belfast, at a time commonly referred to as ‘The Troubles’. A twin, and the eldest of 8, she had many responsibilities at home, helping with her younger siblings. “Our house was always busy”, she recalls. “Doors were always open, tea-pot was always warm and you never quite knew who was home, as friends and relatives were always ‘sticking their head in’ to say ‘hello’, or more appropriately, ‘what about ye?’ Áine remembers the hours of fun with aunts who would sing and tell stories ‘til the wee small hours! This was home-life and it was great.

COMMUNITY SECTION This month’s Community Person: Aine Lark Supplied by: Kingston Arts

But the streets of Belfast told a different story. Amidst gun-fire, bombs and bullets, Áine and her siblings walked miles to get to school; passing burning buses, army road blocks, walls emblazoned with murals of political prisoners and war-related slogans. British soldiers lurked behind hedges and, at night, people prayed together on street corners, in candle-light, hoping for better days. This was street-life and it wasn’t so great, but “it was all we knew”, she added. It was within the safe confines of her secondary school that Áine’s passion for drama, theatre and the arts was ignited and nurtured. Áine loved school. She spent hours in the drama and music rooms and led a very active life, performing in school productions, singing in school choirs and participating in lots of clubs and societies. In her final years, she undertook the leadership role of Head Girl. Her Headteacher, Sister Genevieve, taught her girls to be proud of who they were. “Hold your heads high”, she would tell them, and “go out there and make something of your lives”. The school fostered cross-community links, bringing Protestant and Catholic pupils together, often through the arts; teaching mutual respect, tolerance, and equality for all. And so in 1989, this working class Catholic girl took her first brave steps out of Belfast and headed to University in 5

England, to study Theatre and Drama; undertaking a career in teaching and becoming one of the Uk’s first Advanced Skills Teachers. Áine has also held the post of Head of Kingston Music and Arts Service and is an Executive Member of National Drama. A strong advocate of ‘All arts for all ages’, Áine continues in this same spirit of enhancing individuals and communities through engagement in the arts; seeking opportunities for all and working creatively to shape the delivery and impact of the Arts in Kingston. She is currently Chair of Kingston Arts and Director of the Festival of the Voice 2014. It is Áine’s passion for the Arts that drives her involvement in Kingston Arts and in the wider community. POLICE ADVICE WHY SHOULD I REPORT A CRIME? By sharing information you have about a crime that has been or may be committed, you can help the police solve crimes and prevent future crimes from taking place. The MPS understands that it may be difficult to report an incident, but we encourage you to do so and we will listen, give guidance and support whilst treating you with dignity and respect. If you have been involved in a serious or sensitive crime, we have specially trained staff who will understand your needs and look after any of your concerns (you can read more about this below). If you don’t report crime there will be: • No investigation • Very little chance that the offender will be caught or brought to justice • More people who may suffer what you’ve been through • No clear picture of crime across London, making it harder for us to deal with future problems For every crime reported the MPS will: • Carry out an investigation, looking at the details of the crime including any potential evidence • Examine to see if it is linked to other crimes. If so, then the local police may direct extra resources to the area to prevent other people from becoming victims of crime • Log any property involved, which will be returned to you if recovered • Give you the opportunity to talk through your concerns about what happened and to receive reassurance

• Refer you to Victim Support, a charity who can help you cope with both the emotional and practical impact of crime Hate Crimes Tackling hate crimes such as racist crime, domestic violence and homophobic crime is a high priory for the Metropolitan Police, particularly as these times of crime are under reported. Spearheading this effort are special Community Safety Units located in each of our 32 boroughs. We believe that by taking robust action against perpetrators, supporting the needs of victims, and working in partnership with external agencies, we can make the lives of those suffering hate crime safer, protect their families, their communities, and prevent re-victimisation. If you’ve been affected by hate crime, or you think you have, then let us help you. We will offer you support and give you practical assistance and advice to help you decide what to do next. For an immediate response call 999, or the police non-emergency number 101 or via the National online crime reporting service. For further information and advice on hate incidents please take a look at the Hate Crime pages on our website, there is a link to this on the right hand side of the webpage.

Care in the Community Section It has been stated that loneliness is as bad for you as smoking 15 cigarettes a day; isolation and loneliness can seriously affect health and wellbeing.

KINGSTON CARE WATCH Supplied by: Tracy Steel

Research carried out in recent years has shown that between 6% and 13% of older people say they feel lonely. Loneliness occurs more in older age as we begin to lose those around us, friends may have passed on and often, older people are left without family close by as they’ve moved away due to work or family commitments. It’s important that regardless of age, or health condition to try to keep up with your hobbies, interests and social activities for as long as possible. You can also discover new friends by attending local coffee mornings, or doing some community volunteering, if you are able. Many older people in the community receiving assistance from a home care provider may have this service as their only social contact. Often, visiting care isn’t enough and the person in receipt of the support may still lack regular companionship. Although extra visits can be booked in specifically for a chat and a cuppa, this is where a live-in carer can help further. Live-in care provides round the clock help for those whose health conditions are long term or intense. It’s a popular service and it means you can stay in your own home and community. • It‘s an affordable alternative to residential care • You receive one to one care, every day • You get to stay in your own home in familiar surroundings • Daily companionship and help to find new friends With a dedicated support worker, a companionship or live-in care service can be the support you need to do activities like 11

walking the dog, meeting new people, playing board games or puzzles, keeping up hobbies, attending social events, regular exercise and anything else that helps you maintain a good sense of well-being. To find out more about how Carewatch Kingston can help with overcoming loneliness, call 0208 330 0070 for a chat with their friendly team.

Royal Figures of Kingston Last month I wrote about Queen Anne’s statue in the marketplace. As I’m sure you know, Kingston has many royal associations, dating from Saxon times to the modern era, when Queen Elizabeth II has visited our town several times.

HISTORY PAGE Supplied by: Mike Seigel

How many of you have stopped outside what is now the Jack Wills store in the marketplace and looked up at what is surely a very impressive frontage? Let me tell you something about the history of this and the royal figures who are depicted there. It was Jesse Boot, the famous chemist, who, together with the then Mayor of Kingston, Dr William Finney, took a great interest in the town’s history and wished to commemorate it in this splendid, pictorial way. The façade was designed to look medieval but, as you can see from the dates when you look up, it was put up between 1909 and 1929 on the front of what was one of Jesse Boot’s first shops outside his native Nottingham, and was almost finished when George V (the Queen’s grandfather) came to visit and confirmed Kingston as a Royal Borough. On the top row you can see the first two of the seven Saxon kings, supposedly crowned in Kingston. On the left is Edward the Elder, son of the famous Alfred the Great, and on the right his son, Athelstan, who we do know was crowned here. Beneath them on the left is Edward III, famous for starting the Hundred Years War against France; who in the 1330’s caused Kingston to be known as Kingston upon Thames, to distinguish it from the other Kingston upon Hull. On the right is the famous Elizabeth I, who more than three centuries later endowed Kingston Grammar School in 1561. Below them you can see Henry III on the left and his father, King John, on the right. Both of 13

whom granted charters to benefit the town. King John (best known for the Magna Carta, signed at Runnymede in 1215) issued two charters during his reign, and the second of these, dating to 1208, can be seen in the Guildhall. When you are next walking through the marketplace, you might care to stop for a few minutes in front of Jack Wills and look up at this façade, to ponder on the many regal connections of our town. Not for nothing does it rightly deserve the title of Royal Borough! If you are interested in learning more of the varied history of our town, why not join one of our tours, led by specially trained volunteers? As we are still in the winter season, the walks take place every first Sunday of the month. From 1st April they will again take place every Sunday until the end of September. The charge is £4 per adult - or you can arrange a special tour for you and your friends at a time to suit you. For further information please ring 020 8399 0160 or 020 8399 7888.

Reasons to get a home gym If you haven’t gotten very far with that “get healthy” resolution you made back in 2013, or you’re simply looking for something to add to your household to benefit you and your family, have you thought about getting some quality gym equipment? You may not realise just how much it could benefit your lifestyle. We’re here to tell you to go for it! Here’s our list of reasons why:

HOME SECTION Supplied by: Leanna Carl

Motivation! Of course you’re more likely to get on that treadmill without an audience and with your favourite shows/songs playing in the background. Sure, you could add a few steps to your pedometer by trekking to the gym, but having it right in your living room and never being thrown off schedule by a bad weather spell gives you no excuse to miss workouts! Money-saver Though it is somewhat of an investment to set up all the equipment you need, it will be worth it in the long run. You’ll definitely save money without the gym memberships you fail to exploit; plus, you can get some great deals on Yowza fitness equipment at the moment. Hygiene

It can be whatever you want it to be The equipment you bring in doesn’t have to take up an entire room, or cost a bundle. Depending on your exercises you can simply install what you need for your workout, even if all you want is a treadmill. You can customise and create your own area wherever you want, not to mention you can even shop for space saving options with companies like Yowza. A home gym doesn’t close

Wouldn’t you rather work out and maintain your own equipment, knowing when it gets used and who by, than to head to the gym and find you need to wipe away the sweat from a stranger’s last workout regime? Time saving The time it takes to gather up your gym equipment and venture to your nearest/ favourite gym, only to find there are queues to get on your desired equipment can be a real motivation-killer. With a home gym the process is so much smoother.

15

This gym is open 24 hours a day meaning it is ready to use at your convenience, provided your family don’t jump in first and steal your turn! Some of us simply don’t have the time or energy during those quiet periods at the gym. This way, if you want to work out at almost midnight when there isn’t anyone around, it’s your choice, although morning workouts are most recommended. Consider making a positive life change by checking out Yowza Fitness, as featured in Omni Local.

LOOK FOR THE RED TREE! R.J. Tree Services, Berrylands, Surbiton

16

OmniLocal - Kingston Upon Thames • March 2014

Winter storms and your trees! The storm conditions we endured in the Christmas and New Year period brought serious problems for many trees. This article will assist you in assessing the stability of your garden trees and will give you some tips to minimise future damage. The problems that the weather can bring to our trees can be divided into conditions prior to storms, as well as the events themselves. A prolonged period of rain can saturate the soil, which can raise local water tables to the point that surface water covers the lawn. The problem can be exasperated, where older lawns with a compacted surface from years of us walking over them slows the infiltration of rainwater into the soil below. In areas like ours with clay based soils the poor porosity and permeability further intensifies the saturation of the garden. It is these clay soils that create a slippage zone under the tree root plate as the movement of the tree creates “slip” just like the sort used in school pottery lessons! Just rub some soil and water in your hand to see if your garden has these slippery clay soils. The key factors that cause a tree to collapse in high winds are the “sail” area and height of a tree. The sail area is the amount of the tree that can catch the wind. Just like the sail of a boat, the bigger the sail the more movement that can be expected. The higher the tree is, the more leverage exerted on the base of the tree in high winds. In physics this is often referred to as a “moment.” Shorter trees cause less leverage on the base and root plate. To assess your tree stability and conditions, follow these basic guidelines: 1. Look for hanging branches in the canopy, or branches with unusual angles that appear to be recent. A good tip is to photograph the tree, so a comparison image is available to you. 17

GARDENING SECTION Supplied by: Roger Kerr (Of RJ Tree Services)

2. Look for raised roots in the lawn area. As a root plate becomes unstable, these roots can be exposed on the surface as loops. 3. Inspect the base of the tree. Look for a difference in soil height on opposite sides of the trunk. 4. An easy clue to spot is the movement of the trunk itself. See if the trunk is off centre from the usual position. On smaller trees you can “feel” movement by holding the tree trunk when its windy, to see if the movement is excessive. Tree surgery that reduces the size of the tree via a crown reduction alleviates the forces of a large sail area and leverage. A crown thin reduces the sail area facing the wind, that again helps reduce vulnerability. Making your lawn more porous by forking the lawn root plate to aerate the soil improves the movement of water through the soil, rather than ponding up on the surface. For a proper assessment contact a qualified Arborist for expert advice.

Take mum out for Mother’s Day Look no further than Kingston for great places to spoil your mother this year! No one loves you like your mum, so show her how much you care about her by treating her to the delights our town has to offer. From beauty salons and spas, to florists and one of a kind gifts, the high street does not fall short when it comes to variety. You could treat her (and yourself!) to a lovely day of pampering and luxurious serenity at one of Kingston’s health spas. With a near- endless list of delicious eating establishments about the town, you can also take your mum out for a nice meal in one of Kingston’s unique restaurants and save the two of you the trouble of cooking. You may be surprised at the large number of florists there are around Kingston too; so unless she has allergies, there is no excuse not to grab your mum a lovely bouquet to brighten up her day! If she’d prefer something sweet, why not pop into somewhere she rarely goes, like Hotel Chocolat or Montezumas? If like my mum, she loves a nice hot bubble bath, I guarantee you

In The Cinema

(Scan the QR Codes to see the trailers)

300: Rise of an Empire Supplied by: Leanna Carl made it’s mark, and I’m sure that this sequel won’t be any different. I know I really got into them both and can vouch for a really incredible cinema experience when going to view.

The original 300 movie, as we all know, was pretty iconic. Though the aggressive and in-your-face violence isn’t for all audiences, no one can deny the impact it made in the world of film. Or at very least, the world of dialogue, as this has got to be quite high-ranking in the list of our most famous movie quotes. Regardless of that acquired taste, it definitely

As the story continues onward from the victory over Leonidas’ 300, the Persian Army, under command of Xerxes, (Rodrigo Santoro) marches on towards the Greek city states. Meanwhile the city of Athens, which bases it’s strength on it’s fleet, is led by admiral Themistocles, (Sullivan Stapleton) who is seeking to form an alliance with their rival, Oligarhic Sparta. Their plan is to charge against the invading Persian forces that are led by the vengeful Xerses and Armetisia (Eva Green). You will also notice the return of some great actors from the first movie, such as Lena Headey (Cersei in the Game of Thrones series) and David Wenham (Faramir in The Lord of the Rings trilogy).

Out on DVD

Gravity This movie is definitely one for suspense-seekers! Being a well thought-out mixture of eerie and intriguing, with some really stunning visuals, I think its safe to say that most of us who managed to catch in in the cinema left very impressed. This is a very well put-together scifi/thriller, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. In case you didn’t get a chance to see it, the story follows Dr Ryan Stone, a biomedical engineer (Sandra Bullock) and veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in both her first shuttle mission and his last flight, pre-retirement. The both of them assume that it is going to be a very routine spacewalk -to close and begin careers- as Dr Stone works on repairing a panel on the Hubble Space Telescope and Kowalsky goes to complete his final expedition. However, the danger heightens after their shuttle gets destroyed and the two of them start to lose all hope of returning home. This disaster leaves the both of them spiralling into the nothingness of outer space, tethered only to each other.

DIY SECTION

Fitting a dimmer switch Installing a dimmer switch is one of the easiest ways to add a little ambience to any room, giving you a lot more options than just “on” or “off” to play around with. Dimmers will come in two basic wiring configurations. There are the standard single-pole dimmers and the three-way dimmers. With a standard single pole dimmer the light is controlled by just one switch. With a three-way dimmer, the light can be controlled by two switches. Always make sure you read up on the safety precautions before starting the job.

Supplied by: Leanna Carl

Dimmer switches shouldn’t be used with ceiling fans, as the current fluctuations burn out the motor. If you don’t have room in the wall box for an easy fit, you may want to install a bigger box first. What you’ll need: A Phillips head/slotted screwdriver; long nose pliers; wire stripper; wire cutter; the dimmer; wire connector; a dimmer wall plate; connecting nuts and electrical tape. You may also need to invest in a voltage tester. Below is a step-by-step method for a standard dimmer switch:

9.

Connect the ground wire from your dimmer to a green/bare copper wire in the wall box. Twist the ends together clockwise and cap them using a nut.

1.

Turn off the power to your switch at the breaker.

2.

Double check it’s switched off by flipping the switch.

3.

Detach the wall plate and screws that mount the switch.

4.

Pull the switch away from the wall. If you see white wires, leave them as they are.

10. Connect each dimmer wire to a house wire by gripping the ends with a pair of pliers and twisting them together. The dimmer wires are usually black. The two house wires may be black/red/white with black markings. Tighten a wire nut over each pair of wire ends.

5.

Check that there isn’t a current carried through the wires. Use the voltage tester if necessary.

11. Very carefully tuck the wires back in and tighten the screws mounting the dimmer to the box.

6.

When replacing a three-way switch, one wire (the “common” wire) will be connected to a screw that may be a different colour. Note that this is different from the wire connected to the green screw, (the ground wire.) Use electrical tape to tag the wires.

12. When installing a dimmer with a removable knob, remove it by gently pulling outward before attaching the plate. If you’re using a wall plate with a “screwless” design, screw the plate adapter to the dimmer and carefully snap the wall plate onto the adapter.

7.

Disconnect all of the wires from the old switch. When replacing a dimmer, you’ll need to unscrew the nuts around the switch and house wires.

13. If the dimmer has a separate knob, push it on. Now turn the power back on at the breaker and test the new dimmer.

8.

If any house wires are bent, use a wire stripper to cut off the twisted ends. Remove ¾ of insulation if necessary. 35

If you have any concerns about the job, you should look for professionals in publications such as Omni Local. For example, M E W Electrical.

Successful change – starting off on the right foot Why is it so difficult to make a change? We are often advised to make small changes in our personal lives in the name of health, wealth and happiness – but old habits die hard. In business, trying to change the way teams of people work can be an impossible task – 70% of UK projects fail to embed new behaviours in the workplace. Three simple steps can help you be part of the 30% that succeed: 1.

Be clear about why the change is needed – rehearse it in your mind, find a sparring partner who can play devil’s advocate.

2.

Use surveys and questionnaires to evaluate readiness for change – use the feedback to refine your change strategy.

3.

Communicate the need for change using language and terms your audience can relate to and address potential areas of resistance.
