Hello everyone! Just a quick note for this month’s issue, as we’ve just kicked off this year’s Laugh Kingston Comedy Festival 2014 and are preparing for the shows as we speak! Massive thanks in advance to everybody who has gotten involved this year and who will be attending some of the shows, your support means the world!

Contents: Community Section 4-9 This Months Charity – Momentum: Bianca Effemey Wins Award Community Person - Liz Cook: Shall we Dance? Love Kingston: All About Love Kingston Police Advice: Travel Safety

If you’ve worked with me or know me personally, you’ll know how passionate I am about Kingston and doing something for the community. I am overjoyed with how this year’s comedy festival is turning out and happy that we’re raising money for the Love Kingston campaign. You may have heard about this year’s comedy festival in the local media, on Radio Jackie and over social media, or may have taken part in our online and radio competitions. This event gets bigger and better every year! Although we are reaching the end of all the Comedy Festival excitement, there are still so many things to look forward to this year, and plenty of ways to keep the party momentum going, as well as an all round happier ambience throughout Kingston. There are Halloween parties on the way, Firework displays such as the Kingston Rotary Fireworks and I don’t think its too early to start preparing for Christmas either! Soon we’ll have the Christmas fair on its way and we’ll be seeing a lot of festive decorations all over the high street. There will be more mention of those events next month, so look out for our December issue!

Shall We Dance?? What do you do with the hidden asset of a beautiful dance-floor? The answer is clear: hold Ballroom and Latin-American dancing classes, and the people will follow! So that’s just what we decided to do in the Richard Mayo Centre of Kingston United Reformed Church, on Eden Street, back in 2008.

COMMUNITY SECTION This month’s Community Person: Liz Cook Supplied by: Shall we Dance?

‘Strictly Come Dancing’ on BBC TV was reawakening interest in ballroom dancing and we we found an experienced teacher, for both Latin-American and Ballroom. For the past six years, Friday afternoons have seen dancers (some experienced, some learners) enjoying quicksteps, waltzes and foxtrots; as well as more exotic rhythms, such as the rumba and the cha-cha; recapturing skills and memories from Saturday nights at the local Dance Hall, or finding a whole new world of movement, exercise – and friendship. Jeff, our first teacher, made the classes fun under the title “Not Strictly Dancing”, as well as teaching new steps we never dreamed we could master. Linda Haynes has taken his place, with her expertise in Salsa, as well as other dances. She makes sure we all try the steps, and her music creates a lively atmosphere. Over the years, the class has become more like a club, as members have got to know each other well and chat at half-time over tea and biscuits. From time to time we hold a Grand Tea Dance with cream tea and cakes, where we invite past dancers and others to join us. If you would like to come along on any Friday from 2pm, you can be sure of a warm and friendly welcome from co-ordinators June and Liz, from Linda and from all the dancers. The Richard Mayo Centre is very accessible, 5

and the afternoon costs just £5. For further details, contact June on 020 8549 0999, or Liz on 020 8549 1373. Alternatively, go to the Church website: www.kingstonurc.org, or just turn up and dance! (Partners are not essential - but men are particularly welcome!)

Kingston Charity Founder Wins Prestigious National Award Bianca Effemey, the co-founder of Kingstonbased children’s charity Momentum, has beaten hundreds of nominees to win a prestigious national award - Clarins Most Dynamisante Woman 2014 - for her exceptional commitment to helping sick children and their families.

THIS MONTH’S CHARITY Supplied by: Yvonne Winborn

In May, mother-of-two Bianca, 53, who set up Momentum 10 years ago to support children with cancer and life-limiting illnesses, won a panel of judges over with her dedication and passion for the cause. In the past decade the charity has raised over £1.6 million for sick children in South West London and Surrey. In addition to a Family Support Programme, the charity’s main objective is to improve the facilities and enhance the healing environment in hospitals where children are undergoing treatment for cancer and life-limiting conditions. Momentum also owns two holiday homes in the New Forest where families can go for much-needed breaks. This is the 12th year that the Clarins Award has been staged in the UK, in conjunction with YOU magazine, with the search to find a 2013 winner, launched in January. It aims to recognise the action and commitment of exceptional British women who work tirelessly to help sick or underprivileged children across the globe.

Bianca said: “I was utterly speechless when I got the call to say I had won the award. There are so many worthwhile causes out there that I just couldn’t believe that I had been chosen. This award is really for everyone who supports Momentum, and for our incredible children and families.

Already well-established in France, the award is staged in 12 countries around the world, including South Africa, Hong Kong, Mexico and Korea.

We have come so far. It all started around my kitchen table, I suppose I thought we might raise £1,000 or so, but here we are 10 years on having raised over a million pounds! It’s completely incredible and still quite unbelievable.”

Bianca was awarded £30,000 for Momentum, which will go towards the cost of a new log cabin providing families with much-needed breaks. She was also featured in a four-page article for You magazine in June.

The award ceremony at a London hotel was attended by Bianca, members of her family, Managing Director Groupe Clarins Olivier Courtin-Clarins and Managing Director UK, Debbie Lewis. The celebrations were also attended by Kingston resident Jo Scott, who nominated Bianca for the award after Momentum supported her son Ed during his gruelling cancer treatment. Momentum has recently moved offices and is now based at: 139 King’s Road, Kingston-upon-Thames, KT2 5JE. Tel: 020 8974 5931 www.moment-um.org

What is Love Kingston? Love Kingston aims to help local businesses and residents achieve extraordinary things using limited resources. Their passion is to build a strong and generous community, creating an even better place for all who live or work in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.

LOVE KINGSTON Supplied by: Elaine Miller

The Love Kingston campaign was launched by the London Community Foundation in partnership with Kingston Voluntary Action and has managed to raise over £250,000 for the community. Fifty percent of these funds are invested in the Kingston Legacy Fund, attracting 50% match funding from the government. This will help provide on-going grants to local projects for many more years to come. The other 50% of money raised goes to five local projects, known as the “Pathways out of Poverty.” These projects are: Kingston Churches Action on Homelessness: helps provide housing and welfare benefit advice, as well as offering hostel placement services;

This in turn will help lead to a fair society and offers local vulnerable people support where they need it the most.

Kingston Savers: which provides a safe place to keep their savings and options in flexible and affordable credit sources.

Love Kingston has really made their mark on the borough, which is supported by various businesses, local residents, media and politicians. There are currently 5 Patrons, 10 Ambassadors and many supporters passionate about the cause. The annual Love Kingston Day (which is held on 14th February) has also become a well-known and highly popular fundraising event, brimming with fun and creative activities. Their current target for Love Kingston Day 2015 is a whopping £100,000, but Fundraising Manager Elaine Miller has high hopes, stating that local contributors welcome a great campaign, which this is. A great campaign that is 100% not-for-profit is definitely likely to succeed.

Love Kingston isn’t just about raising money, it’s about creating exciting and innovative ways to engage and inspire businesses and residents to help build a stronger community.

If you’d like to find out more about the brilliant work and success of Love Kingston, or want to find ways to get involved yourself, visit www.love-kingston.org.uk.

Oxygen: local youth project that supports young people and helps them to discover and achieve their ambitions; Kingston Foodbank: helps to prevent hunger for families in crisis or those living on low income. POLICE ADVICE Travel Safety Advice Whilst London’s transport system is generally safe, a few simple precautions can further reduce risks: • Keep handbags and bags fastened closed and wallets in inside pockets • Keep cash, mobile phones, MP3 players and other high value property such as laptops out of sight • Keep your luggage with you at all times - this helps us avoid unnecessary security alerts and delays • Report any unattended bags, luggage or suspicious activity immediately to a member of staff, a police officer or use the green emergency button on the station Help point • If making your journey by minicab or taxi, always book your journey through a licensed operator. Text CAB to 60835 to get local licensed minicab and taxi telephone numbers sent to your phone - CABWISE • Use well-lit and safe routes to and from locations and not short cuts – always plan your journey home before you set out. Look confident and walk purposefully to your destination. • Report any incidents to members of station staff or a police officer. In an emergency, always dial 999. For further advice on reporting any crime, antisocial behaviour or low-level behaviour on the transport network view this link. • When travelling late at night try to sit with other passengers in busy carriages wherever possible. Otherwise, you could also sit close to the driver.

• The consumption of alcohol is not permitted on public transport. If you see someone flouting this rule report it to a member of staff or to a police officer as soon as possible. Cycle Security Advice The Metropolitan Police Service are working with partners, such as Transport for London, BTP, City of London Police, The London Cycling Campaign and retailers to crack down on cycle theft in the Capital. This supports the Mayor’s cycling revolution in London. ‘Lock thieves out’ A multi-agency campaign has been launched to encourage passengers to lock out cycle thieves. A new campaign to encourage passengers to securely lock up their cycles across the capital has been launched this month, including new marketing material such as posters depicting ways to lock up cycles securely at racks, as well as crime prevention leaflets with top tips. Keep your bike secure Around 20,000 bikes are reported stolen in London each year. Thieves think cycle theft is a low-risk, high-reward crime. Follow these tips to lock thieves out and ensure your bike remains safe and secure.

Extra Care for the Winter As much as we love the upcoming holidays, when the family come together to celebrate Christmas or to watch the fireworks, there are other aspects we need to spare a thought about. Whilst the weather warnings start coming in and family-time is on everyone’s mind, it is crucial that we do whatever we can for our elderly and vulnerable family members. One of the biggest concerns for members of our family as they become less independent is making preparations for the Winter. There are a lot of last minute checks to be done, especially for those living alone. For example: Making sure their needs are met. Ensuring that they have a close friend/neighbour or someone in the family to provide regular necessities such as groceries or laundry will help to support them when they are unable to make provisions themselves. Extreme weather cases can lead to us all staying home a lot more often, so remember to shop wisely and stock you and your loved ones homes as much as possible. Visiting your loved ones as often as possible. Constant contact is important, and general communication -especially with the family around Christmas time- helps to lift spirits and prevent isolation and loneliness. Regular conversation and family activities also increase concentration and help to keep the mind sharp, which is particularly beneficial for those suffering with dementia. Supporting good health. Its always worth getting you and your family flu shots if possible, to avoid nasty illnesses made worse by the weather. There is no such thing as being too cautious during flu season, and as we age our immune systems gradually become 11

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY Supplied by: Leanna Carl

weaker. You should also check through your first aid supplies for cold suppressants and keep your family supplemented with a well balanced diet. Trying to stay active. With a lot less outdoor activity during the colder months and more keeping warm by the fireplace or under blankets, our joints begin to stiffen and our bodies become more fragile, so it is also vital to stay limber by adding gentle exercises into daily routines. Joining your seniors or disabled relatives in light workout sessions will encourage them to keep active and make them feel better all round, as exercise actually helps to increase energy levels. If you need advice or assistance in caring for your loved ones, contact your local care provider. Alternatively there are organisations like the Royal Voluntary Service who can offer a hand by calling 0845 600 5885.

Winter Warmers for the Home Whilst the weather gets gloomier and the daylight grows shorter, everyone can agree that there is no place like home! Nothing makes us happier than getting home from a long day at work or a strenuous, blustery shopping spree. What you don’t want is to come home only to find its just as cold and gloomy! Have you taken precautions to ensure a toasty, comforting atmosphere around the house this winter? When was the last time you had your boiler checked? Top of the list for the chilly months would be to get your boiler serviced. This is for obvious reasons - you’ll need your central heating! Not to mention a cold shower is the last thing you need when waking up for work every day. Just make sure that you have a registered professional check your boiler before continuing regular use. Its better to sort these things now than at Christmas when you won’t be able to get anyone to come and take a look at it. Scope out those draughty areas! Draughtiness could be due to cracks in windows, insecure window frames, gaps around doors or even letterboxes. You could use draught excluders for most things, as they are easy to fit, low-cost and sure to keep any chills from entering your home. If its coming from the window, consider contacting businesses like RJM Glass to install thicker windows, or repair window frames yourself. Even re-hinging doors is a job you can do at home. We’ve even shown you how in previous editions of Omni Local! Refer to www.issuu. com/omnilocal/docs if you’d like some DIY advice, particularly in our Winter editions. 17

HOME SECTION Supplied by: Leanna Carl

Really give your home that holiday feel. Even simple jobs like a fresh coat of paint, particularly when using richer colours like creams and deep red shades, can add a warmer atmosphere to any room. You may even consider a new fireplace for a real Christmas feel. There are many ways to enrich your home, including upholstering, a new rug or new lighting. If you tend to hang up your washing rather than tumble-drying, you can also find that sometimes your clothes don’t dry out as well in the cold, which can mean your fabrics losing freshness. A quick fix may be to add dryer sheets to your drawers or investing in scented liners, otherwise you can create pouches of your favourite potpourri scent. A great way to freshen up your home and to add a little festivity is by making pomanders. All you need is oranges and cloves, and the bonus - oranges are a great way to combat many types of insects who may be looking for somewhere warm to go this winter!

How can you get a head start and maintain steady steps, or go all the way to reaching the stars in GCSEs, A-Levels, and other college/university or HSK exams? Eventually, you want to sit on top of the world and enjoy all sorts of job and business opportunities. The Chinesewise School has dedicated the last 13 years to help you find solutions in overcoming the problems you’ve faced. Not sure where to start? The answer is right here! Take Well-Structured Courses It is important to take courses continuously. These can be tailored for the early years, or for primary, intermediate and advanced levels. Also, each step made evenly and according to the time frame and strength of learners will ensure that progress is at the right pace.

LEARNING SECTION Supplied by: Vivien Fu towards an exam (eg. GCSEs), it is crucial to avoid strict exam drills that could kill the enthusiasm. Combining technology with plenty of real-time interactions could help you excel as well as keep the language alive. When learners work at advanced levels, issues with their genuine opinions are expected. Researching information and analysing requires independent thinking, but inline with reality this is very useful for employment and business. The end result, as for many other learners of Chinesewise School, is that you should achieve A* for GCSE and A for A-Level. You will also become a good communicator, willing to carry on learning and shining like a star thereafter.

Chinesewise School (Established in 2001)

For early years, whilst the language is being taught, other activities are blended in. For example, familiarising the surrounding, group interaction, cognitive exercises, developing self-awareness and routine management. At the primary stages, learners show the most curiosity towards the subject. However, lack of life experience means there should be room for you to be imaginative and creative, it isn’t just about focusing on the amount of words you’ve memorised. Learning a language is for the purpose of communication. One should be able to find the reason to do so. Moving on to secondary school, when learners go for intermediate levels when working 21

Whether you want to spend some time at the rotunda for bowling and a movie, or you just want to hit the shops and get your Christmas shopping done early. Godzilla I loved this movie. I’ve always been a bit of a fan of Godzilla, since the authentic Japanese originals made their way into the UK, even the cheesy Matthew Broderick version was enjoyable in it’s way. This epic and graphically astounding flick was a mixture of emotions, bringing a tear to the eye on many occasions and pleasing it’s audience through giant monster showdowns. The carnage and the chaos inflicted during the fight between lizard, insect and mankind, throughout multiple locations results in some intense moments and action filled events. Complete with some epic scores and some familiar faces, there’s nothing missing from this movie. With Aaron Johnson (star of “Kick Ass”) taking the lead and fighting for his country, Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad” legend) as his obsessive, yet on-the-money Father, and Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai” star) as Dr. Serizawa, who has been tracking Godzilla for years and is the only one that seems to understand it’s habits; this film is a must-see for everyone, although parental supervision may be necessary for the little ones, due to violent scenes and a few scares. Definitely recommended though!

Putting up a Fence Sometimes its nice to get a little bit of privacy and definition around your home or in the garden. Not only does a fence look great, but it will also provide you with heightened security, dependent on the size and locking abilities. For a low cost build and a quality finish, it is recommended that you get some good readymade timber panels from your local hardware/ DIY store. It can be pretty easy to put up a few posts and screw the panels on, but for a quality, long-lasting fence, you’ll want to concrete the posts in.

DIY SECTION Supplied by: Leanna Carl

What You’ll Need: Prepared wooden panels, String, Wood protector/bitumen-based paint, screws, screwdriver, drill, cement/ post-mix, spirit level, shovel, tape measure, wooden stakes and battens Create a straight line. If you hammer a wooden stake into the ground where you want to begin, and another where the fence ends, you can tie a piece of string from one stake to the other to give you your fenced off area guideline. Dig a hole at the starting point. Make sure the hole is just about the width of a standard garden spade, as it will ensure plenty of room for the concrete to secure it. Make your marks. Using a tape measure you can figure out where each post hole should go. Dig a hole at each point, as done earlier. Treat your fence posts/panels. Whether they have been pressure-treated or not, you should definitely protect the section of the post that is stuck in the ground using a few coats of your chosen paint or wood protector. Wait for the paint to dry. Whilst you do, drill in 4 pilot holes, evenly spaced apart on the sides of each fence panel. Attach the panel to a post. Do the same on both sides by screwing through the pilot holes made earlier. 29

Lift the panel into position. Lower the posts into the holes and prop with a batten, diagonally from the ground to the top of the panel. Screwing through the top of the batten will stop the panel from moving. Check that the fence is level. Use your spirit level across the tops and make sure the posts are vertical. Simply fill the holes with a little rubble if necessary. Fix a post onto the edge of the next panel. Lower the panel and post into position, securing with a batten and repeat your level checks. Create your cement mix. When you have all your panels secured, you need to fill the holes with cement. Make sure you keep the mix slightly below ground level, in order to cover it with earth later on.

Look After Yourself this Winter Due to the drop in temperature this time of year, you may need to take extra care of your body inside and out. Harsh weather and indoor heating can make your skin dull, dry and irritated, so its important to maintain a good regime. Its also important to keep an eye on your diet, in order to stay on top form. Here are some other ideas to consider: Increase your fluid intake. While the need to refresh and replenish with a cold beverage is less common when the heat dies down, (especially when a nice mug of hot chocolate is on offer instead) you’ll really do wonders for your skin by drinking more water, as hydrated skin is happy skin and is more likely to retain moisture. Eating right will really help with your skin’s natural glow too, and will keep you energised and off the sofa! Invest in the best products for you. Local beauty consultants can advise you on the best and most natural products for your skin type. With a huge range to choose from these days, you can find the perfect moisturisers and emollients to battle the cold. Opting for a thick, mild moisturiser either for your face or for your hands/body is recommended to prevent dry, itchy winter skin. Just remember to keep using them regularly,. Protect your skin! Colder weather doesn’t mean you’re immune to sun-related skin damage. Buy some suncreams if you’re planning on staying out in the sun for a while. Sun and snow glare can be a mean combination for sensitive skin. Always remember to reapply frequently too. Take extra care of your hands. As the skin on your hands is a lot thinner than most other 33

HEALTH & BEAUTY Supplied by: Leanna Carl

parts of your body, it needs extra care to keep its natural oils. Be sure to wear gloves whenever you can to keep the cold out. Some people are irritated by wool fibres, so if you want the warmth, but not the rashes, try wearing them over a thin pair of cotton gloves. Remove wet clothing ASAP. Damp clothing can lead to irritation, eczema flare ups and sores, so keep warm and dry as often as possible. It may be worth buying a good moisture-locking foot lotion too. Invest in a humidifier. Having a humidifier can help retain moisture in your skin, helping it keep its glow, but it can also help to unblock nasal passages and keep you breathing easy when you’re under the weather. If you’re looking for advice from the professionals, need some massage therapy or want to re-stock your beauty supplies, why not seek help from companies featured in Omni Local such as JGSM sports massage and ASEA?
