ivity of imagining impossible
When taking his photographs he will often focus on perspective. This is shown in the photo to the right. The scene seems like a whole from the angle the camera is placed but once it starts to pan around you can see that the walls and ceiling have been painted in such a way to make it seem like the blue squares have been simply edited onto the surrounding area. I like his work because it adds a wow factor to the composition as you try to figure out exactly how Rousse has achieved what you’re looking at. Another way in which he has shown perspective is shown in the photo below. At a first glance it appears that he has merged two photos together to create one, however in reality he has literally cut through the ceiling and wall of this building to expose other rooms and the supports of the building. He has positioned the camera towards the hole in a way that makes it appear like a perfect circle whereas in reality if you moved to the left or right the circle would become misshaped and malformed. So the illusion only works from a very specific angle.
GEORGE ROUSSE
PHOTOGRAPHERS ANALYSIS
George Rousse is a French photographer and artist, who has been interested in photography since the age of 9. A lot of his work has been based upon architecture however he has added his own spin on it.
Rousse’s work shows a link to the theme Truth, Fantasy and Fiction because he has used fiction and fantasy to create a truth, in that the piece only makes sense (truth) when it is looked at from a particular angle and at any other angle it doesn’t match up (fantasy).
Jerry Uelsmann
PHOTOGRAPHERS ANALYSIS
Jerry Uelsmann is an American photographer born in 1934. He creates his work composed of multiple different photos. For instance, in the top photo he has joined one photo of a dry dead tree amongst a baron landscape with a fully grown healthy tree in the refelction of, presumably, a lake below it. This draws out thought in the viewers minds that the reflection represents the dead tree when it was alive. His work is extremely interesting because he creates scenes that looks as if they could be real but in actual fact they are just edited to look that way. Such as the photo to the right. This is how his work relates to ‘Truth, Fantasy and Fiction’. All of his photots are pictured in black and white to show strong tonal zones within them through shadows and light. This also adds more emotion to thed photo emphasising a ‘story’.
Andrius Aleksandravičius
PHOTOGRAPHERS ANALYSIS
Andrius AleksandraviÄ?ius is more of an unknown Photographer, especially compared to the likes of Geourge Rousse and Jerry Uelsmann. He composes his photographs by taking pictures of a glass orb in various locations. He uses this in order to emphasise things like colour and shape. The orb flips the background scene behind them upside down and makes them look rounded giving the viewer a different perspective on the landscpae Aleksandravicus is portraying.
Andrius’s work shows the theme truth, fantasy and fiction because the ball presents an alternate view of the landscape behind it which is not how it actually looks but leads the viewer on to think it does appear this way. It is also a trick of the eye because of how the Using this glass ball creates glass refects the light to make the refraction. This is when image look bend and distorted, everything in the background is flipped upside down and sideways because of the way the light enters and exits the glass. When taking the photos he focuses the camera on the orb putting that in focus and making the background blurred. This makes most of his shots look extremely vibrant because the colours of the background all blend together.
VISUAL TECHNIQUES
This page shows how the camera can be used to display visual techniques. The techniques shown on this page are light quality. I have rolled up pieces of white and black card and arranged them on single coloured backdrops. i have then positioned the camera in different angles amongst the card capturing an abstract image. using the camera I have set it to macro mode allowing me to pick up the subject close to the lense in high quality, in some photos I have also used the flash in order to create shadows adding more depth.
The subject in these photos is my exam booklet. i have curled, folded and arranged the pages against a black backdrop. The visual technique in this is shape because of how I have arranged the booklet. I edited some of these photos to increase how dark the backdrop appeared making it look like the bottom goes on forever.
PERSPECTIVE - FIRST ATTEMPTS
This is my first attempt at using persepective in photography like George Rousse has. I have cut a person out of card in several pieces which you can see in the top photograph. The piece at the front is larger than the pieces behind in order to make it look like it all fits together as one. You can see in the bottom photo that the image appears to look whole. This relates to the theme because the subject appears as a whole but in reality it is separated into three pieces.
ANSEL ADAMS TOTAL ZONE GUIDE
Because this photo displays a variety of most of the black and grey tones this would be considered a broad full contrast photograph because it consists of both very light and very dark tones. The tones range from dark to light in a diagonal formation starting in the bottom left corner. As the photo progresses to the top right corner it becomes lighter and lighter.
GEORGE ROUSSE
THE PRINCIPLE OF “ADVENTURE” - GEORGE ROUSSE
How does the photograph make you feel? Excited / agitated / laboured / reflective / vague / frightened / repelled /nostalgic, euphoric. Why? This photograph makes me feel confused. This is because as I look at it, it does not appear to make much sense as I have to work out how exactly the photographer has made the inner circle fit together with the background.
Do you desire the contents/ the feelings / the idea / the environment of the photograph? Why? I desire the idea of the photograph because looking at the composition really interests me as to how it has been made to look as if it all fits together.
Are you astonished by what you see in the photograph? Why? I am astonished by what I see because it appears unreal as of it had been edited whereas in reality that is what the photographer can see.
Do you admire or dispute the photographers performance/abilities? Why? I do admire the photographers abilities because he had to ensure that every piece of plastered wall lined up exactly in a circular formation in front of the camera.
What is the adventure in the photograph that you experience? Is there any adventure or is it mundane to you? Why? The adventure I go on when looking at this photograph is the journey of trying to figure out what the photographer has done to make this piece appear as it is.
What could you/would you change about the photograph to add the adventure? Explain. I would add another photo to this one that has the camera positioned to the side which reveals the illusion of how it was created. This would add to the journey because the viewer could see whether they came to the correct solution to the photograph.
What do you see in the photograph? In the photograph I see a ring of a completed room, surrounded by the bare and empty ‘skeleton’ of the rest of the room around it.
What do you feel when looking at the photograph? The photograph makes me feel warm and comfortable because of the level of lighting and warm colour that floods the scene.
What do you notice about the photograph? I notice that the camera has been positioned in a very specific location in order for the illusion to make sense and look whole.
Would you want to avoid the location, visit the location or live in the location of the photograph? Why? I would want to visit this location where the photo was taken in order to see first hand the difference between the spot where the ring looks whole and if I were to pan from side to side to see how it changes.
Look away from the photograph. What details do you recall about the content? I recall a ring of a completed room in the center of a bare and empty room.
Is the photograph worthy of a second glance? Why? Yes, this photo is definitly worth a second glance because it will give you a better insight into what exactly the photographer has done in order to make it appear this way.
Is the photograph deliberate or accidental? Why? This photo is deliberate because the photograph has purposely plastered over the room in a particular fashion in order for it to look like a perfect circular ring in front of the camera.
Do you see the obvious or the detail in the photograph? Why? Initally you notice the obvious, being the ring in the centre of the room, but with more inspection you can see the detail of how the photographer has composed the image.

ASSIGNMENT 3 PHOTOGRAPHERS INTERPRETATION
In my photographers interpretation I decided to interpret the work of Jerry Uelsmann. Uelsmann’s work consists a lot of joining multiple photos together to make them appear like they are one flawless photograph. When I was taking my photo shoot I took a lot of still life photos as well as landscape photos which I would then join together using Photoshop
f/5.2 ISO 100
In the photo above is a combination of a still life photo of a marble and another photo of the sun emerging from clouds. When photographing the marble I hung a white bed sheet from the wall and over a surface to give me a plain backdrop for the photo. I used the macro settings on the camera along with manual settings in order to focus close up on the object so that it was shown in lots of detail. To join the photos together I first imported them onto the same page in Photoshop, I then used the circular marquee tool to select the area around the marble before positioning the landscape photo inside the selected area. I then used the background eraser tool to remove any parts of the photo that were outside of the selected area, Finally I used a blend mode to make the sun and clouds look like they were inside the marble itself. I decided to make the photo black and white because all of Uelsmann’s photos are pictured in black and white, Doing this make the two photos appear more ‘seamless’ than if it was in colour. This composition could also show Andrius Aleksandravičius because of how I have photographed a sphere relating to the work he has done with glass balls. This photo represents ‘Truth, Fantasy and Fiction’ because it is a combination of images made to appear like one meaning it is almost a trick of the eye to the viewers because it looks like this object could be real but in reality it isn’t. So the photo appears to be the truth whereas in reality it is a work of fiction.
This edit was focussed more on the work that Uelsmann did featuring multiple frames floating above a landscape. However instead of copying the image directly I adapted it in my own way. Firstly I took multiple photos of a decorative frame from different angles whilst it was lying against a white bed sheet backdrop. Whilst taking the photos I used macro settings on the camera so that the signs of aging on the mirror frame were visible. I imported the photo I liked best into Photoshop were I used the selection tool to delete the actual mirror inside the frame and replaced it with a photo I took of a slope leading down an alley way. I made it appear like this was what the mirror was reflecting whereas it was actually just edited to appear that way. Following this I applied a black and white filter to the photo and chose best style to use to make the shadows in the ‘reflected’ image appear more drastic and to also so a clearer link to Uelsmann. ‘Truth, Fantasy and Fiction’ is a theme with this photo because I have used Photoshop to create an image that isn’t real but looks as if it could be.
f/3.7 ISO 100
f/3.3 ISO 100
My next edit for this shoot features a still life shot of a red apple joined with a photo of a group of branches against the sky. I used a blend mode to join these two photos together. My ideas behind this are that the branches of the trees can represent a number of different things. The first is similar to that of Uelsmann’s photo of a tree in the reflection of a lake in front of a dead tree to show the differences between when it was alive and when it died. By this I mean that the branches resemble cracks which is a sign of age and damage so they could show that the apple is reaching the end of it’s life, or, it could represent the origins of the apple and how it started it’s life growing on a branch such as these. Again this portrays ‘Truth, Fantasy and Fiction’ because this scene does not exist and can only be seen due to the editing I have done to it.

ASSIGNMENT 4 TRUTH, FANTASY & FICTION PHOTO SHOOT
In my first truth, fantasy and fiction photo shoot I took a series of photos looking onto landscapes through a glass ball. When I took the photos I noticed that the ball made the landscape on the other side appear con-vexed as I looked through it. It also flipped the location upside down and from left to right. This is because of something called refraction which is where the path of the light is bent as it passes through the ball giving the image perceived within it a spherised look. I took this first photo after it had just stopped raining, due to this the ball was wet and there were rain drops on the lense of my camera. I decided to use this to my advantage to show different mid grounds in my photo. So the out of focus raindrops are pictured in the foreground, the ball is in focus in the mid ground and the landscape is out of focus in the background. I took the photo with a low aperture which meant that the only thing in focus in the entire image would be the glass ball. I held the ball in my hand at around eye level to show some different angles that could be used, this also gave the best coverage of everything that was around me. The first thing I did when editing this photo was flip it 180 degrees. Doing this meant that the image in the ball would be visible from the correct way up making it easier for the viewer to make sense of. I then used Camera Raw to ajust the values of the photo emphasising the light and dark areas to make it appear more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Finally I arranged the photo on the page with copys of it above and below but with a slightly lower opacity to act as a border for the edit which will keep the viewers eyes in the center of the picture. This photo presents the aspect of fantasy as it is showing the viewer a look at the world fromj a different perspective.
f/3.3 1/60
This photo was taken in a semi industrial estate type area. The subject matter is a roadworks sign behind a wire fence. To take this I placed the glass ball on the floor and tried to take the photo from as low of an angle as I could, to inspire an elemnt of perspective in that the road sign seems to be towering above the camera because of the way the ball curves it. To display this photograph I decided to first cut it down to the centre piece of the ball which I placed in the middle of the page, I then duplicated this and placed it to the side before moving the selection along a small amount before copying it again and playing it next to it, I repreated this process several times on each side before I ended up with this. I think doing this breaks down the photo into segmants which then allows the viewer to look at very specific details in the photo, such as the fence or the grain of the ground, whithout being distracted by other aspects within the photograph.
I have present my theme in this editin multiple ways. The first is that it shows a fantical world within the glass ball because the landscape cannot be seen in that way without the ball, The oither way that fantasy is shown is in the way that I have displayed the photo. In that it shows something that does not exist.
This photo is similar to my last photo. I placed the ball on the floor I wanted to focus more on distance. So I decided to picture a long seem further away than they actually were I focussed on the cen blurred towards to edges of the ball meaning that the viewers eyes a both the dark and light areas of the photo to make it look like the r away. I also like the way that the bottom half of the ball is very This how
shows Fantasy because it presents a complete it has almost elongated the road which it wa
r before taking the picture from a low angle. However in this photo street so that the glass ball would make the houses in the distance ntre of the ball opposed to the entire ball so that it became more are drawn to the aspect of distance. I edited this to add emphasis to road was leading out of the dark and into the light as it got further dark and the top is very light because of the contrast it presents.
ely non existant world inside the orb because of as placed it making the buildings look further away.
f/3.7 1/100
This is my favourite photo out of this shoot. This was taken around the back of a highstreet where products and goods would be unloaded. I held the glass ball at eye level in my hand to get a good angle of everything that was in front of me and in order to get a good curve on the building to the side. Again, as in my other photos, I used a low aperture setting to make the background appear out of focus so it could only be seen clearly inside the ball istelf. I edited this photo to make it black and white. I really like what this done to the photo because it looks very professional as it features a variety of dark and light tones throughout. Fantasy is shown in this edit as the glass ball is bending the world around it. You can see this becasue of the way the wall of the building top the left curves around the edge of the orb. Meaning that the ball is creating its own view on the world. Below the edit I have added an original version so that you can see what the photo looked like when I took it and how much of a difference spinning it round makes.

Photo shoot evaluation
“Refraction is the bending of a wave when it enters a medium where its speed is different. The refraction of light when it passes from a fast medium to a slow medium bends the light ray toward the normal to the boundary between the two media”
REFRACTION
- Referenced from hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/geoopt/refr.html
Refraction is common with things like drinking straws in water because of the way that the straw doesn’t look like it is fully attached to itself. This is because of the way the light gets redirected as it passes through the water to get to your eye.
ASSIGNMENT 5 TRUTH, FANTASY & FICTION RE-SHOOT
For my reshoot photos I decided to take the idea of photographing landscapes through a glass ball but I wanted to adapt it to display more of my knowledge of camera skills and techniques. For these series of photos I decided to take photos of cars driving past the glass ball while using a long shutter speed. Using this shutter speed duration, of around 8 seconds, created light trails from where the cars headlights, brake lights and indicators were. While taking the photos I had to ensure there was a low light level in the area I was photographing to ensure that the subject matter could be seen properly as when using a long shutter speed duration more light is let into the camera lense meaining that the image becomes much lighter. So taking the pictures in a dark location ensured that everything could be seen. This first edit was taken as a bus drove past me at a round about. I had my camera positioned on a tri pod looking at the glass ball to ensure that the objects in the frame that were still for the duration of the shutter speed were pictured in high detail without any blur. Because the bus had more lights than a regular car would there were more colours that appeared as light trails after I had taken the picture. I edited the photo in Camera Raw to add emphasis to the lights and colours of the trails. Following this I changed the saturation and vibrance in the photo which made the bright oranges, whites and reds stand out and dulled the greys of the road. I then imported the photo to Photoshop were I used the quick selection tool to select the are around the light trails before making everywhere other than the light trails black and white. This makes the colours of the light trail pop drawing the viewers eyes to the way it curves through the ball. I have presented Fantasy in this photo because it is showing that I have made something no existstant out of an everyday object. By this I mean making the light trail out of an ordinary bus,
This photo was taken as multiple cars passed me at the same roundabout as the last photo of the bus. I used the same techniques as in the first photo of positioning my camera on a tripod and then using an 8 second shutter speed to capture the light trails of the cars passing by me.When editing it I used Photoshop to remove the background surrounding the ball making it seem like there is a whole world just inside the ball rather than the ball looking like it was just placed somewhere therefore creating the illusion and Fantasy to the viewer that there is a world inside the ball. This also focusses the viewers attention on the meaning behind the photograph inside the ball rather than what is happening around it. I used Camera Raw in order to emphasise how bright the colours of the lights of the cars appear in order to draw more attention to them and therefore my theme. Fantasy is shown in this edit because it is creating the illusion that the ball is a stand alone image, in that it is picturing it’s own world. When the photo is viewed as a whole with the background attached to the ball you can see the illusion unravelling and that the ball has just been placed in a location and then photographed.
I took this light trail photo as a cars headlights travelled past right in front of me. Like in my other photos I used a slow shutter speed of 8 seconds in order to capture the path of the light as it travelled past me. When editing this I first used Camera Raw to make the colours more aesthetically pleasing to the eye before importing the photo to Photoshop were I used the circular marquee tool to select the area around the glass ball. I then flipped the selection to focus on wverything other than the glass ball which meant that I could make the backgorund completely black and white with the ball being visible in full colour. I decided to picture this edit with the orientation it was photographed in opposed to flipping in 180 degrees like in my other edits. This makes the picture more puzzeling for the viewer to figure out as the image in the ball is upside down and flipped from left to right. Adding to the relation to Fantasy because it is showing a subject in a different way than it would normally appear in real life.
In my final light trail photo I toyed around with the selective colour tools in Photoshop. Using the same photo of the bus going past as I did in my previous edit I adjusted the colours of the light trails left behind by the bus from its head lights, brake lights and indicators, After changing these values the trails had turned bright green. This presents Fantasy because the image has been manipulated to change the colour of the light trails presenting something that isn’t real.
This next set of photos were taken to present more interesting subjects within the ball. They were taken at Windsor Great Park and I decided to focus upon more natural elements opposed to my previous photos of urban aspects. I also wanted to show a variety of different angles within these photos to show that the ball can be positioned to show the subject in a different way. When taking this photo I held the ball in my hand at eye level. Using a low aperture a slow fast shutter speed I captured the tree inside the ball. My idea behind taking this was to show how the ball bends reality around itself. Making the tree appear distorted when the ball was looked through. I edited the photo to make it blakc and white before adjusting how strong the black and whites appeared. Doing this show a connection between the reaserach I completed based upon Jerry Uelsmann as in his work he has portrayed all his images in black and white to present depth and emotion. And obviously it shows a link to Aleksandravicius due to the glass orb being used. I have shown my theme of Fantasy in this edit because of the thought of the ball bending reality around itself to create an illusional world, it is also showing fantasy because of the way I have edited it. The original photo was flipped the other way round meaning the viewers are looking at an upside down photograph in reality but doing this has made the image indside the ball appear the right way up and therefore makes it more understandable.
f/4.8 1/640
When taking this photo I placed the ball on top of a dead branch tree lying on the floor. Doing this made it seem like the ball was floating in the air opposed to the photos where my hand can be seen holding it making it obvious that it is bing held up. This is the first way this edit shows Fantasy, because it is presenting an illusion to the viewer. My subject matter in this photo is an old tree pictured in the foregound amongst other smaller trees in the background. When taking this shot I positioned my camera underneath the ball to make the tree seem much bigger than it actually was because of the way the ball curved it. making it seem like it is looming over the viewer. I edited this photo in Camera Raw. I changed the saturation and vibrance to make the sky appear more dull and the grass brighter making it pop. This means that the viewer is less distracted by the bright blue sky and more on the detail of the grass and the bark of the wood. To finish piece I cropped it down from a landscape photo to a square shape. This boraders the photo more difinatively and again focusses the viewers attention to what is in the orb opposed to the backgound.
My final photograph was also taken at Windsor Great Park. My subject of focus in this was two dead trees standing side by side. I wanted to capture the texture of the trees the best I could so I moved myself towards them as close as I could whilst still keeping them inside the ball. Again in this photo I used a low aperture setting in order to draw the viewers eyes towards the focussed parts of the photo i.e. the trees inside the ball. When editing the photo I applied a black and white filter to it in Photoshop and then adjusted the curves so that I could fine tune how dark and light different areas of the photo appeared. This adds a lot of emphasis to the dynamic, flowing shape of the trees and their texture as well, therefore adding more depth to the edit. This particular photograph relates to Fantasy because of the way in which both trees are shaped, as they are twisted, broken up and misshapen, whilst being surrounded by normal trees making it appear like these two are isolated and alone. Representing Fantasy because it is giving human emotions to a non human object, also known as Personification.

ASSIGNMENT 7 POSSIBLE IDEAS
LAYOUTS
These pages simly show possible ways that I could present my final piece but using photos I have taken previously at the start of my exam work.
Possible Idea 1
In this possible idea I have taken photos from my original Fantasy shoot in order to show different possible layouts of them. Above shows a horizontal layout, I have positioned three of my photos hhorizontally with the two lighter photos at the sides and the darker photo in the middle. I like how this layout appears because it looks as if there are three raindrops on the lense of the camera therefore adding to the illusion and also the theme. I have also included a vertical layout of the same three photos which I feel works better to show the photos because it doesn’t feel as if they are being stretched across the page. The vertical layout seems to flow better through the pictures as they are contained within a smaller space. In order to show development for this I will create a mock up using three photos from my reshoots and will apply three different manual techniques to them in order to add to how clear my theme is portrayed. I can use maunal edits such as stitching, masking taping over the top of an image and scratching into the paper.
Possible Idea 2
My second possible idea is taken from my first Fantasy photoshoot. In this I took one of my photos and sliced it up into repetative pieces so that there were two of the same piece duplicated and placed next to eachother to create this abstract piece that looks as if the ball is breaking apart into different segments. For my final piece I could take this idea but perform it manually using a scalpel to cut the photo up before sticking it down in an arranged order. I could also stick the pieces on top of foam board to give it more depth and make it seem like it is standing away from the page it is stuck on opposed to it just become part of the page itself. This would then be stuck inside a frame to give it a border.
This would show the theme of Fantasy firstly because of the content inside the ball and secondly because of how I have edited it to crete something that does not exist in the real world.
Possible Idea 3
My final idea is to create a collage type piece of one of my photos from my reshoot. I would do this by using a scalpel to cut the photo up into pieces before sticking them back together in an arrangement somewhat like the one on the opposite page. This creates a sharp icicle type layout that breaks up the pattern of the photo. This presents Fantasy because I have changed the photos appearance in cutting out and rearranging areas of it to create something fictional.
ASSIGNMENT 8 MOCK UPS
In my first mock up I printed off a photo from my Fantasy Reshoot featureing the image of two dead trees standing side by side through a glass ball. I printed two copies of this photo off before cutting them into even strips of the same length. I then rearranged them so that there were two of the same segment of the photo next to each other repeated throughout the rest of the photo. This creates a film reel type effect, I think this edit works really well with this photo because of the way certain parts of the photo match up so that the veiwer can still tell what the subject of the photo is. This mock up presents the theme of Fantasy because of, one the subject of the photo being that the photo has actually been flipped upside down in order for the objects inside the ball to look like they are actually the right way up creating an illusion that the viewer doesn’ even realise. It also shows fantasy in the way it was edited. This is because the edit incorporates two of the same photo repeated making it something that is completely made up that couldn’t possibly exist in the real world.
I also experimented with using a different photo from my reshoots with this mock up to see which style I prefer the look of and then to use in my final piece. This photo is a cropped version of my photo of the bus passing by me after I had edited the light trails to appear green instead of red and yellow. This is the first way this composition relates to Fantasy because the lights appear a different colour than they do in real life. I think this edit looks good however I don’t like how you can’t tell that the photo was taken looking through the glass ball seeing as though that is what I have based the majority of my exam work on. So I want to try this edit again but using the same photo that hasn’t been cropped as much to see how this looks when the viewer can clearly see the glass ball has been used.
This mock up idea uses a photo from my reshoots picturing a tall oak tree taken looking through a glass ball. I have edited it by cutting it up into diagonal strips that I have then repositioned iverlapping the pieces. This idea I based upon an earlier edit I made using the same technique. ASSIGNMENT 8 MOCK UPS DEVELOPMENT
Here I have refined one of my mock ups to use an uncropped this for my final piece. However my actual final piece will be spacing between the photos even and all photos inline ho paper. Compared to my last mock of of the same picture that w appeasing because the viewrer can make more sense of what i chosen this photo over my other mock up using a photo of two much more techniques both manual and digital being the shu
version of the photo from my reshoots. I have decided to use e a lot more precise than this with the cuts perfectly straight, orizontally, the photos will also be printed on photographic was cropped down I believe this one looks much more visually is pictured as they can see the entirity of the glass ball. I have trees inside the glass ball because I feel that this photo portrays utter speed light trails and the colour edits of the light trails.
