LIZ DESCHENES This piece by Liz Deschenes consists of a series of 7 frames filled with sheets of colour flowing from one to another against a pure white background to make the colours ‘pop’. I could use this as inspiration for my final piece by taking a single edit from my level 5 reshoots and using Photoshop to edit different colour overlays onto it in a sequence as is shown here. Similarly to this I could use coloured plastic sheets to cover the photos before I frame them which would show manual editing. This could relate to ‘Once Upon a Time’ because it would show different emotions on the same person by using colour to change the feeling the viewer gets from it. I could also adapt from this idea of using colour to display emotions by again creating a series of the same photo but instead of using colour overlays I could stitch into the photos with different coloured thread. Depending on how I stitch them will also present their personality in a different way. For example if I stitched the thread so that it all came out from a central point it would make the models personality seem organised and simplistic whereas if I stitch it almost randomly it would appear that he is an disorganised person. Presenting the genre of ‘Once Upon a Time’ because the viewer will have an insight into the person featured in the photos.
RED. Physical Positive: Physical courage, strength, warmth, energy, basic survival, ‘fight or flight’, stimulation, masculinity, excitement. Negative: Defiance, aggression, visual impact, strain.
ORANGE. Positive: Physical comfort, food, warmth, security, sensuality, passion, abundance, fun. Negative: Deprivation, frustration, frivolity, immaturity.
YELLOW. Emotional Positive: Optimism, confidence, selfesteem, extraversion, emotional strength, friendliness, creativity. Negative: Irrationality, fear, emotional fragility, depression, anxiety.
This is an example of the idea on the previous pages. I have taken the photos from my Level 5 reshoots and applied colour overlays to them ranging from red to purple. I have also added blending modes to the overlays which made the colour attach itself to the lighter areas of the photographs. My thoughts behind the colours are that they give the photos different moods and personalities. Along with the edits I have included a definition of what each colour means, both positive and negative, in terms of emotions. If I decide to use this idea for my final piece I will have each photo printed off on photographic paper and arranged in this order however I will get the model I used in the photos to write the definitions of each of the emotions. This will portray my genre because the viewer can see how the model feels which turns the photos into stories about the person.
GREEN. Balance Positive: Harmony, balance, refreshment, universal love, rest, restoration, reassurance, environmental awareness, equilibrium, peace. Negative: Boredom, stagnation.
BLUE. Intellectual. Positive: Intelligence, communication, trust, efficiency, serenity, duty, logic, coolness, reflection, calm. Negative: Coldness, aloofness, lack of emotion, unfriendliness
VIOLET. Spiritual Positive: Spiritual awareness, containment, vision, luxury, authenticity, truth, quality. Negative: Introversion, decadence, suppression, inferiority.
This composition by Lyle Ashton Harris is a collage based around the footballer Zinedine Zidane. It features a large poster of the Zidane and around it are a lot of pictures that all relate to him. The pictures gradually get smaller the further from the main picture they get which suggests they do not have such a strong link to Zidane as the pictures closer to the main photo. ‘Once Upon a Time’ is shown in this piece because everything that is displayed says something about the person in focus, meaning that anyone viewing the piece can learn something about the person and have a deeper knowledge into their life. I could use this as inspiration for my final piece by creating a collage using one of the photos from my level 5 and then incorporate 10’s and maybe 100’s of other photos from magazines, newspapers or books that could possibly portray a link to the main photograph, this would mean that, like in this example, the viewers will discover facts about the person featured in the centre photograph. Alternatively I could create a collage joiner of the face of one of the models I used in my level 5, this would show a connection between this photographer because I would have used similar techniques as them and could also show ‘Once Upon a Time’ depending on how I portray the model in the photo through using digital edits such as blend modes to make the composition tell the story of that person to the viewer through aspects about their life such as their personality and hobbies/ interests. Making them into a joiner could also show that their personality is mixed or jumbled up or that they are a difficult person to understand fully because of the way that the picture wouldn’t be seen clearly as a whole. This techqnique could also be related to David Hockney, who created lots of joiners of different things. Including some people as I would be doing.
LYLE ASHTON HARRIS
This is an example of what I couild do for my final piece. To create this I have pieced together pictures of a person to create a joiner in Photoshop before combining it with a landscpae photo from my level 5 using blend modes. I also inverted this landscpae photo to make it drastically stand out against the joiner photo. This could be done in my final piece by first manually creating the joiner out of the photos I have taken. Then I could expose the joiner in the darkroom with an acetate of the landscape on top before developing it. However in order to make my joiner more abstarct by focussing more on the models face and photographing it from different angles this would give the viewer more to look at and would also make the composition look more like a joiner as in this joiner I feel that the photos match up too well which disguises the fact that it is a joiner.
JAMES WELLING
This composition named 6236 by James Welling is very similar to the edits in which I had made in my Level 5 Reshoots E-Mag. He has combined tow photos, one of a couple standing inside their house with a landscape photo of, presumably, a park by using blendmodes as I did using Photoshop. He has then applied a gradient overl;ay ranging from green colours to orange which gives it a very warm and homely feel. In order to turn this into a final piece I could take one of my last possible ideas of creating a joiner of a models face and mix it with this idea of combining two photos together as I have already done in my Level 5. I could the either digitally eidt a gradient overlay onto it or manually through using coloured acetate. This would incorporate both digital and manual editing whilst maintain the main purpose of taking the photograph and bringing forwards the genre of ‘Once Upon a Time’. Below is an example of my own work from Level 5 in which I have used blending modes and gradient overlays.
This is an portrayal of how I could use James Welling’s ideas for my Final Piece. This composition is constructed of two different photographs, one portrait photo and one landscape photo, that have blend moded together to make them seem like one photo. For my final piece I would adapt on this idea to portray ‘Once Upon a Time’ further. To do this I could combine two differnt portraits of my model I used in Level 5 together along with a landscpae photo. This would then represent how people have two different personalities, one on the outside and one on the inside. It would portray my genre because it would be teaching the viewers about the personality of the person in the composition. I could display the edit by turning it into a photogram by printing the edit onto acetate before developing it in the darkroom and then frmaing it. This would relate my final piece more to some of the work I had done in the darkroom in my Level 4 and could also show my genre more clearly through a lack of colour and how colour effects emotions.
All of these possible ideas would relate to my chosen artist from ‘Once Upon a Time’ Jeff Wall and his photo titled Milk because they all feature portraits that display peoples emotions and feelings within them as his photo does here.
