Beyond the Map Hebrews 11:8 By faith, Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went . . . even though he didn’t know where he was going . . . We read in history books that the educated people used to believe the world was flat. They made their maps to include only the DISCOVERED AREAS that had been discovered or previously navigated. They believed there was no more earth to be discovered and no more water to be sailed in if no one had reported it. These CHARTED WATERS became their COMFORT ZONES, SAFETY ZONES, and KNOWN ENTITIES! Still, explorers would sail the oceans blue and return to tell of it, not being destroyed! It extended the area of comfort and safety. For the church to be the powerful force that God intends it to be, there are still some UNCHARTED WATERS to sail. There are some regions to explore outside of the IMMEDIATE COMFORT ZONES. It will result in some STRETCHING, VISION EXPANSION, FINANCIAL SACRIFICES, MORE TIME SPENT IN PRAYER, and WITNESSING MORE THAN EVER. It will require the church to GO BEYOND THE MAP. There are several ways to GO BEYOND THE MAP. First of all, you’re out at sea when a STORM ARISES, and you’ve set sail in the WRONG DIRECTION. Before you can reverse it, you are blown outside of charted areas, comfort zones or safety. What could have been a tragedy, certain destruction, or d efe at , h a s s u d d e n l y b e co m e a n accomplishment. And how you deal with the storm is important. When storms come, will you remain calm, confident, and maintain your courage? How will you react?

- South Texas Assemblies Review

In Acts 27, the Apostle Paul – a prisoner, onboard a ship, headed for ROME. God showed Paul a storm was coming, but the others ignored Paul’s warning. The sailors onboard got caught up in 3 COMMON MISTAKES: Acts 27:15 – The ship was caught by the storm and could not head into the wind; so we gave way to it and were driven along. v.17 – . . . the sailors let the ship be driven along. First mistake – They began to drift, so they threw up their hands and said, “What’s the use?” Second mistake – They began to throw the cargo overboard, the things they’d need for the future. Third mistake – They began to DESPAIR! Acts 27:20 says, When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of ever being saved. When storms are blowing, and you find yourself out of your comfort zone, you will discover GOD IN A NEW AND LIVING WAY, greater than you’ve ever KNOWN HIM BEFORE. JACOB was blown beyond the map when he had his encounter with ESAU, a family disagreement resulted in a NAME CHANGE! NOAH, was forced beyond the map and placed in a storm that killed everybody, except eight people. But, God sustained his LIFE and he found Mt. ARRAT and started a new generation. The WOMAN CAUGHT IN ADULTERY, so embarrassed, found herself beyond her COMFORT ZONE . . . men seeking to STONE HER. Jesus said, NEITHER DO I CONDEMN YOU – GO AND SIN NO MORE. PAGE 3

THE STORMS MAY RAGE, but what Satan intended for EVIL – God can use for your GOOD. The WOMAN WITH THE ISSUE OF BLOOD, for 12 years was unsuccessfully seeking medical help. The STORM OF SICKNESS blew her beyond her map, and she found herself with a group of people as the HEALER WAS PASSING BY HER WAY. ON HER KNEES, she reached out through the crowd, with dust swirling all around her face, totally beyond her comfort zone. She touched the hem of Jesus’ GARMENT, and SHE WAS HEALED IMMEDIATELY! The STORM of the REVOLUTIONARY WAR – blew AMERICA beyond the map – and she became the greatest nation UNDER GOD – with LIBERTY and JUSTICE FOR ALL! The CIVIL WAR – blew the NORTH and the SOUTH beyond the map, but we became a NATION UNITED AGAIN! STORMS blew Abraham Lincoln toward certain defeat. 1831 – He failed in business 1832 – he was defeated for the legislature. 1833 – again failed in business 1835 – his sweetheart died 1836 – he had a nervous breakdown 1838 – he was defeated for the Speaker of the House 1840 – he was defeated for the Elector 1843 – he was defeated for Congress 1848 – he was defeated again for Congress 1855 – he was defeated for Senate 1856 – he was defeated for VICE PRESIDENT 1858 – he was defeated again for Senate 1860 – He was ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES! Historians say HE WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST PRESIDENTS TO EVER LIVE! (continued on page 4)

www.stxag.org

From Our Superintendent Beyond the Map A storm that blew the APOSTLE PAUL, blew him right into CEASAR’S HOUSEHOLD and he writes, “The saints that are with me, salute you . . . ” THEY HAD TO CHANGE THE GUARDS EVERY FOUR HOURS – because he kept winning them to GOD! THE STORMS OF ROMAN PERSECUTION pushed the early church beyond the map – BUT THIS GOSPEL SPREAD LIKE A RAGING WILD FIRE AROUND THE LAND! A storm on the SEA OF GALILEE blew the Apostles into relationship – where Jesus came walking up to them ON TOP OF THE WATER! A storm blew MARY & MARTHA beyond the map. Their brother, Lazarus, had been dead for 4 days. I don’t think they were very reserved when they SAW HIM COME WALKING UP OUT OF THAT GRAVE! A STORM OF DEFEAT is not a REVELATION OF VICTORY! We read in Hebrews 11 of folks blown beyond the map – and THEY STILL SUBDUED KINGDOMS; THEY STILL OBTAINED PROMISES; THEY STILL STOPPED THE MOUTHS OF LIONS; THEY STILL QUENCHED THE VIOLENCE OF FIRES; THEY STILL ESCAPED THE EDGE OF THE SWORD; THEY STILL TURNED TO FLIGHT THE ARMIES OF THE ENEMY!

(continued from page 3)

ANOTHER WAY TO GO BEYOND THE MAP is by a direct order from the KING. The king says, “We’ve expanded the man!” Genesis 12:1-‐2 – The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. 2 "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. GOD SENT ABRAHAM BEYOND THE MAP. He said a whole nation would come from Abraham, who was too old to even have children! A direct order from The KING... ★Can take you where you’ve NEVER BEEN BEFORE! ★Took a SHEPHERD BOY with 5 stones against a giant, whose army fled ★Sent ELIJAH to the BROOK CHERITH where ravens fed him ★Sent HOSEA beyond the map to get his wife back ★Sent ESTHER to the King’s chamber, saying, “IF I PERISH I PERISH, but I’ve got to try to save my people!” ★Sent JONAH beyond the map – to preach to NINEVEH and the whole city was saved! ★Told MOSES to stretch out the rod and the Red Sea split ★Sent JOSHUA marching around the JERICHO WALLS for days without saying a word! But on the last day, with a shout they marched, and the walls came tumbling down!

A direct order from The KING – ★Sent Paul on a journey into MACEDONIA! ★Sent Peter to CORNELIUS’ HOUSE, and the Gentiles were filled with the HOLY GHOST! MARK 16:15-‐17 – GO INTO ALL THE WORLD AND PREACH THE GOSPEL . . . and whoever believes and is baptized will be saved . . . whoever does not believe will be condemned . . . and these signs shall follow them that believe, in my name they will drive out demons…. BEYOND THE MAP???? THEY WILL SPEAK WITH NEW TONGUES . . . THEY WILL LAY HANDS ON SICK PEOPLE, and they will get well. It’s time for the church to go beyond the map and do things that have never been done, see things we’ve never seen, and reach folks we’ve never reached with this glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ. Let’s use what the enemy intended for our demise to launch the greatest REVIVAL of reaching our generation before Jesus returns. Dottie Rambo wrote, “So let the storms rage high, the dark clouds rise, they won’t worry me for I’m sheltered safe within the arms of God; He walks with me and naught of Earth can harm me. Sheltered safe within the arms of God.” Tim R. Barker

Access South Texas Keeping our district ministers & ministries connected! Have you ever needed the phone number or address of a STXAG church or minister but you didn’t have a directory with you? You know you can give offerings and district tithes online, but did you know you can also track your giving and register for most of our district events online? What about that district event you can’t remember the date for, and you don’t have your STXAG pocket calendar or the latest edition of the STAR? Wouldn’t it be nice to have the South Texas A/G information with you right when you needed it? Now you can! The STAR is now a digital resource you can use to connect to the information you need. It is currently a digital magazine you can view on your computer and use the live links to more information than ever before. Future plans are to make it available on digital tablets and smart phones so you are never without a copy whenever you may need it. The ministry departments of South Texas all have lots of great information and resources available on their websites - and the STAR links to each one of them. Our main district website www.stxag.org also links to them all. Our Minister’s Directory is now available as a digital resource. To use it on your computer or tablet sign in to your “ACCESS SOUTH TEXAS” account. If you have used online giving through our website, then you have used your “ACCESS SOUTH TEXAS” account. If you haven’t done that yet, you can now. CLICK HERE to go to the member login page. Enter your username or email address along with your password to go to your Access South Texas home page. From here you can look up a fellow South Texas minister or church, you can access the district calendar and even keep track of your giving.

- South Texas Assemblies Review

If you need an account just click on the link under the sign in window to set up your Access South Texas account. You must use the email we already have on file in order to connect. The directory and calendar will soon be available as an app on your smart phone so you can have it with you all the time. Our Constitution & Bylaws will also be made available online later this year. One of the benefits of the digital format will be keeping the ministerial and church changes up to date and always available to our ministers. For the year 2013 we plan to use the calendar on Access South Texas. You can actually use that calendar now for yourself and add your own events. Our world is becoming more digitally based. We desire to be technologically current and be good stewards of our financial resources. These changes will help us in both of these areas. Thank you for your patience during this transition. We hope that you will find advantages and enjoy the convenience of these upgrades.

KINGDOM REMINDERS Submission to Biblical Authority Submission to Biblical authority and the morality it teaches brings stability in a very unstable world. But in my pride, when I take the liberty to pick and chose what I think is generationally relevant, situationally ethical or personally my 'right', I give myself over to human irrelevancy and unethical human behavior each and every time. At this point I will begin to abuse myself and abuse others. My "religion" is so much more than just a set of rules. It is a relationship with a living loving God to whom I submit to (or struggle to submit to) every day. And through that submission, my life is enriched and protected. I need the moorings of stability that God's Word brings to my life; the foundational wisdom dealing with my actions and interactions with others (and with myself); how I treat men, women, boys and girls; how I handle conflict resolution; how I manage finances; and yes, the behavior and struggles of each of my human appetites, including human sexuality and issues with caloric intake (food) - OUCH!! As a good life coach, physical trainer, dietician or financial manager brings discipline and favorable results, so God brings discipline to me resulting in morality, stability, peace, hope, joy and true love.

God to man, found in and through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, who has been and always will be generationally relevant and situationally ethical. Beware of those who criticize and 'dumb down' biblical morality or 'situationally' pick and choose how they want to live, for in so doing they teach and live a law unto themselves and begin the process of removing one's moral foundation resulting in personal and social chaos, human abuse and manipulation, the disintegration of the family, the destruction of business and finally the ultimate collapse of society. Like never before, we need the truth of biblical morality and ethics, which in turn gives us foundation, hope, healing and restoration. Don K. Wiehe

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path. Psalm 119:105 (NIV)

LIVING THE THANKFUL LIFE Since this is the fall edition of the STAR, I thought I would share an outline of a Thanksgiving sermon. If you would like to have the manuscript notes and p o w e r p o i n t c o n t a c t J o n i B r o o k s a t jonib@ctchurch.tv or 713-‐944-‐4815

The Apostle Paul had full knowledge of the perplexities which life can throw at us! 2 Corinthians 11:23-‐28 II. THE THANKFUL LIFE TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THAT GOD IS IN CONTROL OF OUR LIVES Everything in our lives comes down to two things: Either we believe our lives are in the hands of God or we don’t… We place our faith in Him or we attempt to control our own destiny…

LIVING THE THANKFUL L IFE! TEXT: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-‐18 INTRO: In writing to the Thessalonians, the Apostle lets them know they are to “Rejoice always” and “Give thanks in everything!” Surely he did not mean to “Rejoice” and “Give thanks” during times such as these! Did he?

William Culbertson said, “Keep praying, but be thankful that God's answers are wiser than your prayers!”

I. THE THANKFUL LIFE MUST OVERCOME THE REASONS FOR INGRATITUDE Every one of us could choose not to live the thankful life and point to a host of reasons why we cannot. The thankful life is more of a decision than a set of circumstances. Thankfulness is not an emotion -‐ it is a choice of a lifestyle.

III. THE THANKFUL LIFE REQUIRES CONTENTMENT Paul gives us a little insight into the secret of reaching a point where no matter what experience in life we happen to be navigating, we can “Rejoice always” and “Give thanks in everything.” Philippians 4:11-‐13 True contentment in the life of the Christian expresses: • Total dependence on God… • Trust in God to work things out… • Faith toward God for everything…

Unconditional in theaters Sept. 21, 2012 It is a beautiful, faith based film inspired by true events. It is getting outstanding reviews. We are hearing comments like; “It is the best Christian film I have ever seen. It doesn't seem like a low budget film. The acting is top quality. This film will give hope to so many people and change lives.” I have been an A/G minister for over 40 years. I just retired from my position for the past 15 years as professor at SAGU. Our son Brent was a Royal Ranger, in Fine Arts and was our worship leader when we were pastoring. The A/G pastors and leaders in this area are very excited about the movie Unconditional. Congratuulations Reverends Jason and Lupita Sandoval are the proud parents of Joannah Sofia Sandoval. She was born at 35 weeks on July 13, 2012 at 12:56pm. She weighed 6lbs 4 ounces and was 18 inches long. The doctors told us that we would not be able to conceive a child. In late November, Jason told me that God had spoken to him about us being pregnant. That following week I went in to see the doctor only to hear the news that we were not pregnant once more. My doctor referred me to a specialist which we saw four days later. They did the same exact testing and ultrasounds from the prior week... to their surprise the results were completely different, we were pregnant. The doctor's exact words were "the God you serve really answers prayers". We had a rough pregnancy with various complications all the way up to birth, they told us baby or mom would probably not make it. We trusted God through the whole thing and held onto His promises. There is power in prayer, and today we hold God's promise in our hands! - South Texas Assemblies Review

SAGU to host first annual Business Internship Fair Waxahachie, Texas – August 14, 2012 – Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Career Services will host its first annual Business Internship Fair on September 26, 2012. Director of Career Services Beverly Robinson shares, "Not only are SAGU student highly qualified, they are dedicated to excellence. These are the students you want working for you." According to NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers), retention rates of full-time hires who were interns with an organization were noticeably greater than the rates of hires without such experience. After one year on the job, employees who were hired from the organization’s internship program had a 75.7 percent retention rate while only 66.5 percent of hires that had no internship experience of any kind were still with the organization. After five years, 62.4 percent of hires coming from an employer’s program were still with the company, compared to just 48.1 percent of hires who came with no internship experience whatsoever. "Internships are a great way to increase productivity, take advantage of low-cost labor, give back to the community, and increase employee retention rates," shares Robinson. "But even more importantly, you can test drive the talent before you hire." The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Sheaffer Center, Presidents Dining Room. Contact SAGU Career Services (972-825-4798) if your business is interested in attending. Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) is a private, Christian university located 30 minutes south of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex in Waxahachie, Texas. The university was established in 1927, and now offers more than 60 associate, bachelor’s or master’s degrees on campus or online. EvangelismC ommission SOUNDING THE TRUMPET Jeremiah 6:17 I set watchman over you, saying hearken to the sound of the trumpet. I would love to write on the different sounds of the Trumpets that Israel would blow concerning the people of God. There was a different sound for different situations concerning the signs of the times. I would like to sound a warning concerning the day's ahead. Never has the church and our nation been placed in the position we are in. As the church of the Lord Jesus Christ, we must realize that the church, and I believe, the Assemblies of God have been called for such a time as this. I take us to the book of Joel 2:28- in this verse it says first "Your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions, and in Acts 2:17 there is a flip flop in this Prophecy. In Acts he begins with Young men shall see visions and old men dream dreams. This is no mistake by the Holy Spirit. In Hebrew, dreams means recover, cherish, develope, restore, help, be strong and healthy with our past and the message. Dreams in the Greek means a Theophany or manifestation of Deity. Rhema out. In Hebrew, visions means to behold, to perceive, with intelligence, and method, to discern, heed, perceive, with concern and to also live it out. I have no ax to grind, and you will have to trust my Spirit and concern for this matter, but these two scriptures are saying that the young and the old are not to be in competition, but to commend each other. The flip flop in Joel and Acts was not to be destroyed, but to complete the race with the right baton. In the Olympics last month, the USA relay team of 4 runners were placed in different points of the track. Each Section of the track has a runner with the ability to run against the opposing - South Texas Assemblies Review

- CALLED FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS

team. Each runner has speed, but the anchor, or last man, must be the fastest. The reason being to either maintain the lead or take the lead at the finish line. He must finish the race RIGHT.

Not all revolutions are created equal. A spiritual revolution without sacrifice always' ends in rebellion!

Here we are in sight of the finish line and in sight of the promise land and we have let the enemy pre-occupy God's team into morphing the Pentecostal church into something we were not called to be. I believe the original Assemblies of God were called for such a time as this! This means it was not going to be easy. This means that the enemy has deceived us into majoring on minors, trying to be like other denominations, accepting nonPentecostals for advice, reading nonSpirit Filled authored books, going to outside seminars whose God is not our rock, being so desperate for a crowd, lowering our Pentecostal Distinctive, more concern about filling chairs instead of vessels, compromising the gospel in fear of running people off.

Revolution Unites Rebellion Divides

The purpose of the New Testament church was to produce or reproduce Born Again people for the Lord Jesus Christ. We were not called to accommodate mankind but give provision for mankind's imperfections. We must have a young generation catch not a man made fire but a Holy Ghost fire that burns our soul for souls. We need a spiritual revolution to take place in our churches and our ministries.

Revolution is Self-less. Rebellion is Self-ish

Revolution returns us to great Principles Rebellion sacrifices great Principles We cannot afford to give way to the mood of the masses or the temperature of the times! We are not building a crowd, we are to enable Jesus to build his church through His body the church. We must develop an attitude to serve the Lord by doing the little things, because only God can do the big things. We have been called for such a time as this. As leaders of the church we must sound the trumpet and understand the signs of our times. The next 3 months our country and the church will be tested and we must not be silent. Let's Keep Marching to a different drum beat, because we are marching under Calvary's Flag and not under a Crescent Moon Flag. Let's have Revival, it is good for the Soul!
