Is it just me or is 2017 flying by? I cannot believe we haven’t published anything in 2 years but we have been busy, I promise! Between moving and planning and stressing and planning and spending and planning, we’ve been doing a lot. I have personally been sucked into a “K-vortex” that I can’t Jim-out of...but I’ll get to that momentarily. #OMY is and has been going through some MAJOR changes; whether they be visual, structural or digital changes, they are happening quietly behind the scenes, so thank you for your patience and continued interest in us. We’ve not

forgotten you, we are coming back with something bigger so we only ask for a little little more time.

and better,

If you’ve been on www.ourmyyour.com recently you will have noticed our #MCW placeholder; don’t worry everything will be revealed soon enough. In the meantime while we continue with our secretive developments, I have decided to bring you mini supplements to tide you over until our new look is revealed. Every few months you can now expect a compressed version of #OMY, including widespread content regarding fashion, literature, art, music and entertainment. Rest assured, you’ll see familiar finds, but what is perhaps most exciting is that we’ve scoured for a few things out of the ordinary. Did someone say That’s right, our debut #OMYmini supplement it’s all about ! Try not to get too hung up on the “pop” of though, it’s most definitely NOT as basic as that. When you think of , you have to abandon your preconceptions and be open to great new music, innovative styling, passionate fandoms, epic music videos and highly anticipated comebacks. If any of that means something to you then “hello old friend” and if not, prepare to learn what daebak really means. Since this #OMYmini is all about , I think it’s fair to say that we wouldn’t be doing our jobs properly if we didn’t highlight some of the most successful artists to date. Shall we begin? Non-KPOP fans...FIGHTING! @LaylaRobin xo

I (^.^)

n the average idol group we can expect to find colourful and animated members that can sing, rap and dance well; respect for their leader, trouble caused by the maknae, a manicured composure in front of a lens and an overall sense of charm. When it comes to BTS however, the list is far more exhaustive. Each member boasts great vocal range, control, tone, versatility & self-awareness on recordings and in live performances. Impactful imagery and dedication to concepts, costuming and fan service only begin to scratch the surface of their capabilities, as BTS also engage in songwriting, composing, arranging and production for other artists as well as themselves. Not forgetting to mention their intricate choreography, imaginative stages and seemingly effortless execution.

N

ow do bear in mind that they achieve all of this whilst finding time to rehearse, tour, pop up on V Live and remain healthy throughout their comically hectic schedule - the life of an idol is not for the faint-hearted.

^o^

BTS debuted with “No More Dream” on 13th June 2013, on the popular weekly South Korean program M Countdown. Since then the BTS fandom, “ARMY” have been treated to numerous performances & concerts, 30 music videos, 1 single album, 4 extended plays, 4 full studio albums and 22 singles (^v^) (including 2 Japanese albums and 9 Japanese singles), with another tipped for release this year! Their album “Wings” topped charts in over 26 countries including the U.S, Hong Kong, Russia, Turkey, Sweden, Denmark and Finland; Did we also mention that they are the first ever Korean act to break into the UK album chart and land themselves a comfy spot at number 62? #JustSaying

L

et us just take a moment to focus on what sets these young men apart from their peers: the music. BTS construct lilting melodies that condition your senses, affect your outlook and command your attention; without ever compromising on grit, soul, authentic hip hop expression and sonic superiority. BTS’ record label Big Hit Entertainment, is a production powerhouse. Affording BTS the opportunity to work with innovative music producers like P Dogg, Slow Rabbit, Supreme Boi, Philtre and of course, Bang “Hitman Bang” Shi Hyuk. Aggressively addictive, transcending, fun, immersive and full of lyrical integrity, BTS’ music is all encompassing, invigorating and a necessary experience for all.

T

he members arguably shine most brightly when they are operating as one unit, however their solo endeavours deserve just as much attention as anything BTS have to offer as a group. The rapper line are explosive in their mixtapes and always keep ARMY on their toes. At BTS’s 3rd Muster held at Gocheok Skydome, 38,000 ARMYs were treated to a rare glimpse of Agust D (Suga’s solo stage name) performing “Tony Montana” from his mixtape, featuring Jimin as well. Rap Monster’s recent collaboration with hip hop heavyweight Wale is politically charged and most definitely nothing to scoff at controversy and all! If you haven’t yet, go and listen to “Agust D” & “RM” then come back when you’re done. Why not throw in a little of J-Hope’s “1 Verse” for good measure as well ...bruhhh!

RM, Wale “Change”

“J HOOO OOOOOO PE!” (*^o^*) ARMY

R

esident maknae of the group Jungkook never disappoints with his covers. His scintillating rendition of Charlie “Charlie Puss” Puth & Selena Gomez’s, “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” is a prime example of the prowess within BTS’ vocal line. The BTS soundcloud is home to a whole host of other fantastic covers and original music that’s not to be missed, so head over there when you get a chance. Under his birth name Kim Taehyung, V took on an acting role in the period drama, Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth. On this first outing as an actor not only did he give touching emotional and comedic performances, he also featured on the original soundtrack with fellow BTS member Jin. Melding together melodically, the young men’s voices are perfect counterparts in “Even If I Die, It’s You.” For a glimpse of Jin doing what he assuredly loves best, catch up on an episode of “Eat Jin.” You won’t be disappointed, but may inexplicably want Korean BBQ, a HUGE steak and P-I-Z-Z-Z-A.

What was supposed to be a relaxing evening in Berlin turned into a night of making new friends, dancing shoulder to shoulder, shooting soju and snapping selfies. Tom Pham, co-owner of Aigoo Music, is the man responsible and I had the pleasure of catching up with him after the event to talk KPOP, international expansion and of course Aigoo Music...

A

We have only recently started organizing our own parties under our label, but we plan to expand the geography of our label and make it known worldwide. Perhaps one day we will open a Korean cultural and educational center, a Korean restaurant, or Korean shops - we will see. Our plans are big but the important thing is that we are moving in the right direction.

Well what can we expect from an Aigoo Music event?

First of all we try to focus on the quality of our events and deliver the maximum positive emotion to our visitors. As long as our guests are happy and satisfied, then we are happy and satisfied as well. We try to listen to their wishes, analyze the feedback from our past events and try to implement them in the next ones. Our aim is to be better than we were yesterday.

So what does it really take to make a great KPOP party?

First and foremost – the audience. Personally, I adore KPOP fans for their dedication to the music and Korean Pop in general. If you visit a KPOP party you will meet people that bring positive energy - they know every song and can cover mostly all the choreography from music videos. People don’t just dance with random moves; every track played during the party will have its own spirit and So Aigoo Music, what do you guys do and style of dance. For me a KPOP party is mixture of a performance and a party, with elements of improvising where do you see it going? Aigoo Music is an organization and music label and preparation. currently focusing on event management and music production; with future plans to expand our activity to Secondly, a great party depends on having the right music and DJ that can feel the audience and play what they talent searching and development. really want to hear or dance [to] at that particular Myself and Linh had the idea of creating our own label moment. It’s very important to follow the latest trends together when I was working in Singapore. When I moved in KPOP, to stay updated and be able to mix the song back to Germany in February 2016 we immediately requests from the audience.

view with Tom Pham

started making our plans a reality. We got started by posting some KPOP mixes and content on our social Without a good DJ with a high level of expertise in Korean pages, then Linh started to play on KPOP parties under Pop music, a KPOP party wouldn’t be that great. And finally – a bit of luck that the party will run smoothly the Aigoo Music label and promoting it. without any unexpected issues and surprises.

KPOP is currently growing in worldwide popularity at an accelerated rate, what is it about KPOP that makes people love it so much? As I usually say: “KPOP is fun!” But the main reason I see is in its uniqueness, cuteness and fancy-ness. If you look at every KPOP music video you will see an independent story, with its [well] filmed choreography and eye-catching elegant clothes. If someone asked me to describe a KPOP music video in one word, I would say: “Chic!” As for the music style itself, to be frank, most of the time I have no clue what artists are singing about - but I like the beat and the rhythm that bring a drive in your body. In my opinion those are the key points that make KPOP beloved by its fans.

At your recent event you worked in partnership with K Base Germany, what do you most enjoy about collaborating? What we enjoy most is the collaboration and networking itself - and of course bringing together the audience. We [just] did our first party in Berlin in collaboration with KBase – organizer of KPOP Cover Dance Competitors in Germany - and we combined a good marketing strategy of KBase with our expertise in mixing KPOP music. Together we created a great event and it was a place where a lot of KPOP fans could gather together and enjoy the night with their favorite music.

Talking of music, which artists have you been listening to recently? I was always into BIGBANG and still enjoy listening to them nowadays - but I [have] to say that I listen to all KPOP bands and artists since it’s impossible not to when it’s playing at every KPOP party. Regarding other styles, I like hip-hop, r’n’b, pop - actually it doesn’t matter. If the music is good, it is good regardless of the style, artist or band.

As an entrepreneur you must have faced and overcome challenges, what is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? “Never give up!”

With 2017 flying by, what exciting developments have you got planned for Aigoo Music? We have some nice ideas planned for this year, but would prefer to keep them [secret] so we don’t lose the chance to surprise our audience later. What I can say for now is that we are looking forward to the collaboration with #OMY to organize a joint event together in London. It would be a great reason to visit the capital of UK! Follow Aigoo Music so you don’t miss out on any events or opportunities!

10 MINUTES WITH LAUREN OLI

IVIA FLEISCHER

I

n March I caught up with the delightfully charming and infectiously bubbly Lauri from K Base Germany. Working in collaboration with Aigoo Music, KBG put on a soju-fueled KPOP party in the heart of Berlin, which myself and @reneelouiseomy very much enjoyed! The 21 year old is currently majoring in media and communication management - so all of you hard-working students, entrepreneurs, KPOP lovers and dancers take note, Lauri has her eyes set on success... TELL US, WHAT IS KBASE GERMANY AND WHAT DO YOU DO? KBASE Germany (short KBG) is a community project for KPOP dancers. We host events, put dancers in contact with other events for potential stages, support and promote them. I founded KBG in 2015 simply to host a contest but it’s growing so fast. I hope that in a few years we can have a support program for young talents (like a school with workshops and so on) and that we could work like an agency to liaise between our talent and Korea. We want to host concerts as well and become more international - basically we want to become some kind of KBASE Entertainment.

SO WHAT CAN NEWCOMERS EXPECT FROM KBG EVENTS? Our main focus is on the community. You will always find a friendly environment, where everyone will be appreciated for who they are and there’s always space to connect with new friends. We want to offer the chance of showing what these young talents are able to do. For those who are not directly participating as dancers, there will always be enough time to talk to everyone with a great show or program behind it. OUT OF EVERYTHING YOU DO, WHAT IS MOST ENJOYABLE ABOUT KBG PROJECTS, EVENTS AND PARTIES? KBG is my baby and I love to see how it and its community is growing. I’m happy to see more faces [and] read comments after the events where they say they had a great time and met someone new, or even learned something. I’m doing all of this for the people, so the people are the ‘thing’ I most enjoy. KPOP. WHAT WAS IS THAT INITIALLY DREW YOU IN? I never liked German music and American singers were to “common.” I started listening to Japanese music at first but because of YouTube and a friend, I found KPOP which was not as freaky as J-Pop. catching up with

DJ Aigoo

I like meeting new people. I enjoy it even more when we can discuss creative things in their life. I especially love it when they’re really good at what they do and as is the case with DJ Aigoo, she is exceptional. After the stellar party hosted by KBase Germany and Aigoo Music, I caught up with the inimitable DJ Aigoo to chat about musical influences, life as a female DJ, popular requests and of course KPOP...

Let’s talk about when you got started and how you came up with the name DJ Aigoo.

I first heard it in a K-Drama and really liked the sound of it. It’s just a catchy expression and it’s relatively easy to pronounce for everyone! In my first year in high school I came across a dj mixtape online that inspired me to buy my first dj controller and start recording my own mix. Aged 16 I had my first gig at a friend’s birthday party with 15 people. As a DJ you’re bound to be eclectic and engage with music intimately; who or what would you say are your biggest musical influences and why?

I don’t have a specific artist or band [in mind] but I listen to every kind of music: vietnamese, korean, english and even german music can influence me. I got and still get inspiration out of everyone and everything. So when did KPOP first show up on your radar?

My first KPOP experience was with the 9 girls of Girls Generation and their uplifting music: Tell Me Your Wish & Run Devil Run. I was going through a tough time in my life where K-POP and its positivity motivated me to keep on going!

As a female DJ, have you ever experienced any discrimination?

Hell yah. Once I had a gig in a really fancy club and after the club manager criticized me for not having dressed “sexy” enough. Not sure that would have happened with a male dj... Haha. Yes I’m inclined to agree! So aside from the overt sexism, what are the main challenges you face leading up to, during or after a set?

It is kind of hard to satisfy every single person in the audience and to play every requested song. But I am usually up to date with all the current songs; so before the event I practice my transitions and organize my library - that’s mostly it. You must be referring to your digital library; in terms of old school djing vs modern djing, what are your thoughts on people saying modern djing doesn’t require skill?

It’s 2017 and I think you should adapt to the new technology. There are skills that you need to acquire to use it proficiently, so I don’t think you can compare them like this. I like both. I really respect the old school djs and the amazing music they produce with the limited resources, but the

For someone just starting out as a DJ, what advice can you give?

Get inspired, gather experience as much as you can and find your own style.

ven with so much music at our disposal, you must have a maller selection of artists that 2017 looks set to be a busy year ou are currently listening to? for you, what are you hoping to sten to everything, but right now I’m really into achieve?

For now I want more international gigs where I can alking of music, which songs get meet more KPOP fans abroad and get to know KPOP e best response during a set party people from all around the world. nd why? I will be in Hamburg (amazing crowd) and I really DOUBT: “Bang Bang Bang”, “Fantastic Baby” look forward to Korea day in Dusseldorf. “Good Boy”! BIGBANG always gets the crowd hyped. What initially attracted you to KPOP? Before KPOP, I was immersed into the Korean culture through Kdramas. As I watched historical dramas like Jewel in the Palace, Dong Yi, Iron Empress, and Empress Ki, I had an attraction to the original soundtracks. They were such beautiful pieces that I searched for some more on YouTube. The first KPOP group that I discovered was Girls Generation, also known as SNSD. Their songs were very catchy and the choreography was easy to learn in my down time. I then started listening to EXO, which lead to BTS. This was [around] 2012-2014 when I hit the all time low in my life. I was a lost cause. Instead of listening to [BTS’] music though, I started watching their Bangtan Bombs and logs. I cannot say what it was that attracted me to these seven boys. Maybe it was the fact that I could see them without their makeup on and [how] they goof around and cry like real people. The more bombs I watched the more I shut myself off from the real world.

I decided to start listen I [had] already become and their stories. I fe “Save ME;” the lyr They were saying eve my friends and family.

an emotional connection to the actual music. I can’t stress enough the change that BTS’s music brought into my life. I fell in love with how they treated each other not only with respect but also love. I fell in love with their passion to make their fans happy with their own lyrics. I fell in love with their perseverance despite all the chaos with other companies and fandoms ning to their songs since betting on their downfall so early during debut. e familiar with their voices ell in love with the song When their WINGS album came out, I didn’t rics literally saved me. cry, I basically sobbed. I had finally found music erything I wanted to tell with words that expressed my feelings so well. With each solo I fell in love even more deeply with each member for different reasons, which is why I cannot have a bias. They are different people.

I fell in love with Jungkook’s reserved feelings for his hyungs that have practically raised him into manhood. I fell in love with Taehyung’s ability to not give a shit about what others er other artists? more familiar with SNSD think of him or his face other than his brothers. S but they were missing I fell in love with Jimin’s innocence and the hard

work he puts into every song. I fell in love with Hoseok’s smile that shines even when people send him death threats and beg him to leave the group. I fell in love with Yoongi’s artistic mind that works hard to ensure that his songs speak the truth, not just about his life but also BTS and ARMY’s life. I fell in love with Seokjin’s ability to leave the pedestal that Korea has set on elders so that his dongsaengs could feel more comfortable and at home in the dorm. I fell in love with how mature Namjoon is with the media and his antis but when it comes to BTS and ARMY, [how] he puts his guard down and expresses himself.

Talking of Wale, what is your opinion on the whole “Venny” drama? My opinion is that the girl started with good intentions but the recognition got to her head. Her account was specifically used to tweet about Namjoon’s cover of Wale’s song because they were mutuals, which meant she listened to Wale before BTS. The problem happened when she took all the credit for the collaboration when it was actually a group effort; the members of her group chat helped her out by spreading the tweet link everywhere they could, but Venny dropped them. Then the whole fandom became disgusted when she started posting sexually inappropriate tweets about Namjoon. It got worse when she released a video that Wale and Namjoon sent to her thanking her and saying that it was all her hard work that got them together. I didn’t really get involved, publically at least, but I do know that the fandom has decided to ignore her, and that’s exactly why I do too.

There is always going to be tension among opposing fandoms, have you ever experienced any hate or “anti” comments directed at you? I have, but not as extreme as some other accounts. I like to be interactive with my followers so my DM’s are even open to non-followers and sometimes an anti will just send me some hate messages. Sometimes when I post an update about BTS, a certain fandom account will reply that BTS amounts to nothing or that they don’t deserve their popularity.

Being able to watch BTS have fun, train, grow and develop before our eyes only adds to their popularity, what are your top 5 Bangtan Bombs? First of all let me praise the fact that Bangtan bombs exist, without these there would be a lack of emotional connection to BTS off stage.

My favorite bombs are the ‘BTS Magic Show’ no one can forget that time Jimin threw his own bombs at army lol. ‘Battle of Acting Charming’ - it’s so cute that they cringe so hard at each other. ‘Let’s Speak English’ - just a big thank you to Hoseok, this bomb became so many memes. ‘BTS Surprise Birthday Party for Jungkook’ - this bomb truly revealed how hard Jungkook works to make sure everything is perfect. He even cried when he realized it was a prank, to be honest after I cried, I laughed. ‘After M Countdown 1st win’ - this was BTS’s first win with their song ‘I Need U’ and even the staff went crazy in the back; Taehyung kept kissing us through the camera, Jimin was crying and Namjoon was so flustered.

Although I know of the couple ships, I don’t really follow any of them. I do notice when very open members like Jimin and Taehyung become closer to a certain member at a certain time though; they’re >>>really cute<<< about it.

dying back in October of nce I was 13 and I already I picked up the language

This literally means “A rolling stone extracts a stone that is embedded.” I not only apply this to my life but I also use it as an explanation to antis questioning of BTS popularity. If there appears someone who can do what I can do and more, then I have failed so I give 110% to everything I do. Many question BTS’s popularity, but the fact is they entered the same scene as other KPOP groups with more. They brought in self composed and produced songs, complicated choreography and 7 different personalities that became a family of brothers despite their diverse backgrounds.

What do you find most difficult when translating from Korean to English and back again? One of the most difficult things is that there are other accounts out there on Twitter who

translate faster than me because the accounts are managed by a team, so it’s hard to post before them. In order to make my translations more interactive between the BTS members and ARMY, I explain specific things in detail. For example if Jin makes a joke that can only be understood with previous knowledge in Korean grammar, I provide a detailed explanation. Or if the members [make recommendations] like Taehyung and Namjoon recommending movies, songs and art, I insert pictures and summaries. Although this slows down my progress, I prefer that ARMY fully understands what’s going on.

Do you have any tips or suggestions for anyone interested in learning Korean? If you are learning Korean make sure to stay away from romanization, it will throw you off. Also, just like my family and friends did, if anyone tells you that you’re being naive or that you’re wasting you’re time, know that you are voluntarily learning a new language, that in itself is a determined and amazing thing.

You recently BTS’ content o that process

On V-app there are accounts. I have both th I follow several enterta KPOP groups, but the s way connected. With the subbing acc to see the behind the

basically two separate he fan account in which ainment companies and subbing account is in no

count you actually get scenes of each video.

You can choose to only be a segmenter, a translator or both. It’s actually a very complicated process because you can see that many other people are also in the process of translating the same segment as you and someone could think they have a better translation and completely erase your part. I never realized that I could translate until BTS announced that they had an extended album of WINGS, so I got to sub ‘Spring Day’ as soon as it came out. After you submit the subtitles and everyone is confident about them, the whole video is submitted and [then] put into review by the VAPP staff for any mistakes. I can say that 95% of videos on V-APP are subbed by fans and volunteers, except certain videos like the BTS YNWA preview show which was subbed by BTS’s staff themselves. No other volunteer could get into that video.

Being so in demand must have a downside, have you ever felt pressure to translate for multiple groups & chats?

Yes actually. In the heat of the moment because so many were complaining on BTS Channel+ for not understanding the chatroom, I joined several group chats on WhatsApp and Kakaotalk. I promised them that I would provide translations, but after about a month of me being deprived of sleep to provide them with translations, they slowly stopped thanking me and started asking me to send it earlier than usual. A few weeks ago I had to cut down to one groupchat, the first and original groupchat I started in. They were closer to me than my family and helped me out when I had bad days, I would’ve felt guilty leaving them.

For example this h peachBOY thought N Taehyung for bring watches to America but about overwatch.

of the group chats I left would bring in Twitter account translations and correct my translations, which made me feel really upset and trashy, but I learned from it because while I take my time to make sure my translations are as accurate as possible, other accounts make mistakes and have to apologise.

I’m looking forward to Korea treats them. Also, of their sudden popularity recognition from internat [and] not just American Of course collaborations as long as BTS have eno

Before we finish off, I want to go over a point you touched on earlier. BTS attract as much love, as they do hate; why do you think “antis” have so much hate for BTS and ARMY? First, BTS was an outcast in Korea because they were very original and unexpected. They were part of a small company that could not feed them and was overshadowed by the big 3 companies in Korea, YG, SM, and JYP. Unlike these companies Big Hit could not pay for longer screen time, nor could they convince cameramen to shoot correctly live as they had practiced before the show. There is [also] this belief in Korea that if you stan a specific group or artist, then you only follow artists from that same company - this is practiced more often than not. Many other fandoms believe that ARMY is a fandom of small teens that have false but concrete hope that their group would win every award. This confidence lead to a lot of hate and rumors

that even the ‘Artist of the Year’ award was a charity case. The truth of the matter is yes, ARMY does get carried away with their dedication to BTS and believe that the band deserves every award, [but] so does every other fandom.

Despite not knowing if th European fans constant reserve their complaints to mention [how] South already made a presen because of their dedicatio North American fans hav in making BTS and K-pop the United States and Ca the freedom you hear ab still the majority of conse youth is being repressed This is why we ar

We are a very diverse fandom from all over the world - most of the accounts you find on the BTS channel+ are from the middle East or practice Islam, fans in Africa are using their love for BTS to spread the awareness of not only K-pop but the culture of Asia as a whole.

Lastly, what advice would you give to any new ARMYs that have fallen under BTS’s charm? Don’t be intimidated by old ARMY, we are just really protective of our boys and who gets around them.
