MP’s ambitions for PM after electric Commons speech TONBRIDGE MP Tom Tugendhat has admitted he has his sights set on Number 10 Downing Street after making an impassioned speech about the Afghan withdrawal last week. The former soldier triggered messages of praise from across the political spectrum after he recalled his own experiences in the troubled country and said the retreat by US and British forces ‘Damned well felt like defeat’. After his speech, the MP was asked if he wanted to be Prime Minister one day. He replied: “Of course I want to try to shape decisions. Of course that means I want leadership positions, because that’s how you bring about change.” Full story page 3

Local & Live is back in Calverley Grounds ON THEIR WAY: Hundreds of refugees fleeing in an RAF Hercules with many heading to the UK for help By Richard Williams FIVE Afghan families who have escaped the Taliban takeover are to be rehomed in Tunbridge Wells. And there are plans to help more. Councils across the UK have been asked to take in refugees from the stricken state as part of the Government’s Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme. Tunbridge Wells Borough Council [TWBC] was due to announce that they had found a home for an Afghan translator and their family under the previous Afghan Locally Employed Staff Relocation scheme. However, following the worsening situation in the country, the authority decided to offer assistance to more people. Councillor Andy Fairweather, Cabinet member for Communities and

Wellbeing at TWBC said: “I think residents who are aware of what’s been happening in Afghanistan will agree we have an obligation to help these people, many of whom have risked their lives to help our troops.

‘Five families within one year falls short of what we must offer’ “I am very pleased we’re going to be able to help more than one family this year. It is the right thing to do.” The Council has previously helped Afghan interpreters settle in the area and has housed and supported ten Syrian families following the earlier conflict in that country. The new Afghan families will be living

in private rented accommodation but the Council said they would like to hear from landlords who have family sized homes that could support the resettlement initiative so they can rehouse more. The idea of helping others comes amid calls to reach out to more families fleeing the Taliban terror. One such voice is that of former intelligence officer Mike Tapp who lives in Tunbridge Wells and served two operational tours in Afghanistan. In an open letter to the Times (Page 15) he says: “Five homes within one year falls short of what we surely must be able to offer. We should be leading on this one and setting an example. “If we offer 10 homes and other

THOUSANDS of music fans are expected to flock to Tunbridge Wells this Bank Holiday weekend as the town’s free music festival returns after a year’s hiatus due to the pandemic. The 16th Local & Live kicks off this Friday night [August 27] and continues throughout the weekend until Sunday night [August 30]. The weather is predicted to remain sunny all weekend, and music fans are due to be entertained by hundreds of live acts in various venues in the town, including on the purpose-built main stage in Calverley Grounds. Last year, the free music festival went online only due to the impact of the Covid crisis. Now it has returned and organiser Paul Dunton said the bank holiday festival is set to bring in up to 15,000 visitors this weekend. See our FREE eight-page official festival pull-out on pages 21-28
