elcome to your April edition of SO magazine. This month is quite the milestone for us as we are 14 years old! Yes, you heard that right. The first edition of SO magazine hit the newsstands in Tunbridge Wells back in April 2008 and despite print journalism having a rocky ride over the past decade or so due to the colossal onset of digital media we are delighted to say that we are still here! In this month’s birthday issue we have Edney & Edney opticians as our cover stars. The reason? They have proved to be one of the town’s most successful independent businesses carving a niche in providing the discerning eyewear market with a wealth of exclusive and rare glasses and chic shades. So popular are they that people come from miles away to get kitted out. In addition to this they are able to provide the best quality optometrist service in the local area courtesy of their stateof-the-art consulting room. Turn to page 8 to discover more about the talented husband and wife team Jamie and Ayshah Edney who are behind the brand…. Talking of success, we also shine a spotlight on Flimwell Park, a new mixed use sustainable development which has been designed to connect people with its stunning woodland surroundings. And at the same time, enhance the wellbeing of the community that will live in, work in and visit it. The full story and exclusive chat with its

Music

t e s s i e g a t s e Th Our resident music guru Paul Dunton shares his delight at being asked to play one of the summer’s biggest festivals and reveals which other local acts will be joining him on stage…

ne of the main highlights of the Tunbridge Wells summer events calendar is the annual Pub in the Park festival. Celebrity chefs Tom Kerridge and Simon Rimmer will be hosting the festival which is held in Dunorlan Park July 8 -10. If you’ve not been then I can honestly say that Pub in the Park has a lovely, relaxed family friendly atmosphere and outside of the superb live music there are plenty of activities taking place. These include numerous chef demonstrations, top quality shopping from a multitude of stalls and stands and a children's area to keep any little ones entertained. Pub in the Park has always boasted an incredible line up of pop and rock superstars and internationally renowned chefs since it first launched in 2018. And the good news is the music line-up for 2022 doesn’t disappoint – in fact I’d go so far as to say that it’s quite something! On the bill for Friday evening are Faithless who will be doing a DJ set alongside the queen of the kitchen discos Sophie Ellis Bextor. Saturday afternoon has a distinct Brit-Pop feel as it will be headlined by feelgood pop-rock band The Feeling who will be joined by ultimate rock 6 | April 2022 | SO Magazine

‘n’ roll tribute act Noasis. Saturday night promises to be an awesome affair with English rock royalty Supergrass topping the bill alongside renowned British rapper and songwriter Professor Green. Sunday is headlined by none other than Melanie C of The Spice Girls. In the build up to her set there will be performances from reggae sensation Aswad and house and garage duo DJ Luck & MC Neat. But amongst this stellar sonic line up I am delighted to announce that four Local & Live acts (all from Tunbridge Wells and the surrounding areas) have also been chosen to perform on the main stage at this year’s event. Opening for Faithless and Sophie Ellis Bextor will be up and coming local band Two Weeks In Nashville. The four-piece have enjoyed a meteoric rise over the last two years and have performed all over the UK supporting the likes of The Hoosiers on numerous occasions. Their high energy pop/rock sound takes influence from the likes of The Killers, U2 and Kasabian. Two Weeks In Nashville drummer Ian Wilson revealed: "This gig is going to be amazing! We are so excited! Opening for Sophie Ellis Bextor and Faithless is a dream come true."

On Saturday afternoon, popular local singer-songwriter Charlie Rivers will be taking to the stage before The Feeling and Noasis. Charlie's songs are rich in pop sensibilities and inspired by the likes of Jason Mraz, George Ezra, Dave Matthews Band and Paulo Nutini. On his forthcoming appearance Charlie Rivers commented: “Pub in the Park will be my highest profile gig to date, I cannot wait to share the stage with so many iconic music stars, I have butterflies already!” Ramping up the grooves on Saturday night will be local rockers Suncharmer. The popular local four-piece are due to headline The Tunbridge Wells Local & Live Music Festival in August at Calverley Grounds and will be opening for the likes of Supergrass and Professor Green at Pub in the Park. Suncharmer's dynamic sound mixes an array of influences which span generations from The Beatles and The Rolling Stones right through to The Artic Monkeys and Blossoms. Suncharmer’s frontman Paul Crisp told me: “We are so pumped about playing Pub in the Park! The main

stage is incredible and features a world class line up, we can’t wait to open for Professor Green and Supergrass... to play at Pub in the Park is a real honour and privilege!” Finally on a personal note, I am delighted to announce that my own group The Paul Dunton Orchestra has been invited to open the Sunday live music sessions. We are absolutely thrilled to be opening for the likes of Melanie C, Aswad, DJ Luck & MC Neat. We have lots of new songs to play and will be bringing a lively mix of our cinematic pop style songs to Pub in The Park! And for all of the aforementioned acts, it’s an incredible opportunity to open for such esteemed performers on a professional festival stage in front of thousands of people in their home town. I can definitely say on behalf of all the musicians, we all feel very elated and fortunate to have been invited to play. These are the type of gigs you dream about and nothing is more motivating then knowing you have a world class act following your performance. Time to get rehearsing! Huge thanks to Tom Kerridge and his team. Why not come and join us for the weekend? Pub in The Park is on from July 8-10 2022. For more information and to book tickets visit www.pubintheparkuk.com

“We have a different perspective”

Jamie and Ayshah Edney tell Eileen Leahy all about their successful and unique business Edney & Edney which focuses on giving clients the best eyecare and eyewear around…

S

tepping into the bijou premises that Edney & Edney optometrist and opticians occupies on Monson Road you immediately get a sense this is a specialist retail business that’s had a lot of thought and passion poured into it. Multiple rows of brightly coloured Kirk & Kirk glasses frames greet you on arrival just before you reach the main minimalist space of the independent eyewear store, where you’ll find all manner of über cool looking spectacles all beautifully displayed on backlit custom-made shelving that ranges from polished glass to funky metal. It’s fair to say that Edney & Edney feels more like a chic boutique for those in the fashion know rather than your average opticians – but then that’s exactly what owners Jamie and Ayshah

Edney who own and run the business want you to think. “When we launched Edney & Edney five and a half years ago we had a very clear vision and that was to be the complete opposite of a high street optician,” explains Jamie as we sit down to chat at his desk. Bedecked in a funky pair of tangerine coloured Kirk & Kirk glasses, a smart tailored tweed jacket and the coolest pair of yellow laced boots, Jamie certainly doesn’t look like the type of person who’d test your eyesight. He starts by explaining how he and his wife Ayshah have 40-plus years of combined experience in the optics field and that after years of working for mainstream opticians they were both determined to create something very different for the eyewear market. “I’m a dispensing optician and Ayshah is an optometrist. The easiest way to

think about how we operate is it’s a bit like a doctor and pharmacy type set up. Ayshah finds out what a person’s eyesight needs are and I get the prescription made up.” Jamie, who also employs an assistant optician, says he spent most of his career working in Tonbridge while Ayshah operated out of Sevenoaks before they started their own business. “We’d harboured a dream to work together for a long time so five and a half years ago, just after we’d had our second child and I had turned 40, we thought to ourselves if we don’t do it now then we never will,” continues Jamie. “Doing your own thing means giving up the good job you have already but also thinking to yourself ‘well we have this unique idea about what we want to do but if it’s that obvious to us then why hasn’t somebody else done it?’ That kind of thinking definitely held us back for a

couple of years.” Eventually though the couple decided to take the brave leap of launching their own business specialising in luxury niche eyewear brands. “We opened from scratch which was tough,” adds Ayshah. “The shop we took on had been a hairdressers and was left vacant for about a year. So there was a lot of work to do before launching. The idea was to create a space that didn’t look like an opticians or feel like working in one either.” This vision also applied to the brands the duo wanted to stock instore. “We wanted to bring independent, small batch eyewear to the UK but more importantly to Tunbridge Wells and the surrounding area because people don’t usually have access to this,” explains Jamie. “There are a couple of central London stores, one in Manchester and also one in Newcastle who are offering similar things to us but not to this extent.” Edney & Edney now stock around 12 artisan eyewear brands including Jacques

There is zero tough launching a brand-new pressure on sales purchases too as business by themselves the beauty of most people who come through the it was they had complete control over door have already made up their everything. “We weren’t buying an mind they want to be here so it existing opticians as that would have becomes a fun experience rather than cost a lot of money. But if we had a chore. and we’d put in what we “If you think of a wanted to stock then we traditional opticians would have it’s a scenario where immediately “We don’t sell any someone is told alienated around traditional fashion they need glasses, 80% of customers! designer brands – just and then that And if we had they need to done a drip feed independent sunglasses choose a pair – of stock; doing a manufacturers. Our situation really want glasses and meant we didn’t have don’t know what’s anything to lose so we opened fashionable or looks good’. And I can as we wanted to and hoped people guarantee that every pair tried on in a would like what we were about - and regular opticians the assistants will thankfully they did.” Ayshah also expresses her delight at say ‘oh that looks good on you.’ But the truth is you can’t try ten things on how well the people of Tunbridge and they’ll all look good.” Wells responded: “Ever since we Jamie says he can back all of the launched customers have been very above up with some market research supportive and I think that’s because he and Ayshah carried out before people here do like different and have opening their shop. a history of championing “We discovered that people were independents.” more inclined to go to the dentist Jamie goes on to say that as well as than the opticians! The reasoning was customers loving Edney & Edney’s that although the dentist can be a bit ‘unique, luxury, creative and fun’ noisy and painful they can’t get it ethos when it comes to sourcing exclusive eyewear there is another key wrong. Whereas if you visit an opticians and you don’t know what factor that attracts clients.

you’re looking for then there’s usually not enough guidance which means you might make a mis-informed and potentially very expensive purchase. “Here it’s the other way around. People clearly want to come to us, there’s no pressure for us to sell or for them to buy as the products here speak volumes and you can’t get them elsewhere. Choosing eyewear then becomes a fun experience for customers because we take time working with people to find out what they want.” “I think our clients look at it as finding something that will go with them – and not just a necessary purchase,” states Ayshah. “They might want a pair of glasses that mirrors their personality or fashion sense, and I don’t think people have looked at it like that before. You’ll find a lot of people come in here and want a sensible, elegant pair of glasses but then they start pushing themselves just a little bit further. It’s very interesting.” Jamie reveals the pair actively encourage people to go to the edge of their comfort zone. “If you do this then there’s myriad benefits: you choose the best pair of glasses, you get more people commenting than ever on how good you look and next

“When we launched Edney & Edney five and a half years ago we had a very clear vision and that was to be the complete opposite of a high street optician”

time you come in for glasses you’re far more confident! You want to up the ante and go for something different and then it becomes a pleasurable purchase rather than a practical one.” But Jamie and Ayshah openly admit that with this type of bespoke approach to sourcing exclusive frames there is a heftier price tag attached. “As we’re stocking fairly unique pieces that you can’t find elsewhere, frames here start around £250 and top out around £3,000 – but the 3K bracket is not what we’re about. If someone comes in, really likes a certain frame but can’t stretch to that sort of price then we will try and source alternatives for them. We always say it’s not about elitism here. If someone loves what we do but can’t quite get there in terms of price then I’ll go to the marketplace and source what I consider looks the best and is still of a superior quality. I’m also really interested in brands who have a great back story too because we don’t want to work with any large manufacturers at all.” That means you won’t find a pair of Ralph Lauren tortoiseshell specs or black Prada or Chanel shades chez Edney & Edney. The brands they do stock – and absolutely love – are ones that unless you are already a customer SO Magazine | April 2022 | 9

you’ve probably never heard of. But despite being under the radar they actually have the edge over the mass market says Jamie as most are handmade, produced in limited edition batches or come in colours that you would never find on the high street. “Kirk & Kirk, who are based in Shoreham near Brighton sell all the colourful frames. Now if you came in and bought a pair of them today we wouldn’t be surprised if you had four pairs by the end of the year as their colours suit the season and different styles of wardrobes.” But Edney & Edney’s USP isn’t just about sourcing artisan glasses. The business highly values its bespoke approach to its customers too. “Without blowing our own trumpet too much we do look after them. If for example we get a particular product in I might Whatsapp or email a client saying: ‘I’ve got this, thought of you’. But having said that we certainly won’t bombard customers every week with that type of personal contact because again it goes back to that thing of you can’t tell someone something looks good all the time. “If you see a key piece and think ‘ooh that will suit so and so’ you make contact but that might only be once a year or once every two years. It’s certainly not trying to disguise a quick sale, far from it as the second you do that people switch off.” Ayshah says this way of doing business stems purely from being so passionate about what they do at Edney & Edney. “Jamie loves the frames and when he’s looking at collections he’ll often have a certain client in mind so actually he’s always thinking about individuals.” That commitment and drive for excellence also applies to the clinical side of the business. As an optometrist Ayshah is equally focused on delivering exceptional service to the many clients she sees. “What’s key is we love what we are

10 | April 2022 | SO Magazine

doing. I’m as passionate in my consulting room as Jamie is out here.” Ayshah’s professional space is state-of-the-art and somewhere Jamie says that visiting eye specialists love to go into and have a play around with all the equipment. “A lot of eye surgeons visit us and enjoy playing around with the tech as it’s usually better than what they have in hospitals. And although we’re all about the glasses looking good on customers they still have to have see out of them so we are hugely committed to providing the best visual experience possible. “The reason we don’t shout too much about the clinical side of things here at Edney & Edney is because every optician in the country shouts about this. So why get into the battle when we’ve decided to take a different approach?” Jamie then reveals they have aligned themselves exclusively with Nikon for all lenses because quite simply they are the best.

“We wanted to bring independent, small batch eyewear to the UK but more importantly to Tunbridge Wells”

“They’re like the Rolls Royce if you will. I guarantee that if you buy a pair of varifocals from us you won’t have any issues. Varifocals were developed around 30 years ago and if you’re buying them from one of the price driven opticians on the high street that’s the product you’re getting. In short you don’t get given Mercedes Benz at Skoda prices! At our price point and with Nikon lenses you get the very best available and as such glasses become easy to wear – a joy to wear in fact.” Jamie adds that all Edney & Edney glasses, which include a few kids’ ranges, come with a guarantee and presentation box which is exactly the type of customer experience you’d expect from a good watch supplier or jeweller. “We’re all about that level and style of service,” Jamie states. “We see glasses as being more than just something that’s functional but something you want to wear. In this country it’s built into us to have a

pair of glasses and then two years later you might get another pair but if you go to most of mainland Europe or the US then people have at least six pairs in a wardrobe. They put their outfit on and decide which pair will go with their clothes. It’s an extension of personality, of style.” Edney & Edney’s glasses aren’t just limited to prescriptions though. Jamie says they get lots of requests for sunglasses too - and just like their vision glasses all their sunnies are from handpicked indie labels too. “We don’t sell any traditional fashion designer brands so you won’t find any Ray Bans, or Gucci – just independent sunglasses manufacturers. They don’t do handbags, cologne, or lipsticks, just quality glasses.” Before the pandemic hit Jamie would travel all over the world – from the States to Europe to the Far East – in order to source exclusive brands. And he’s hoping all that will change soon as it’s something he enjoys.

THE EYES HAVE IT:

“Frame exclusivity, excellent customer service and clinical excellence is at the heart of what we do”

Jamie Edney reveals a few of the exclusive independent brands you’ll find instore Chrome Hearts: “A super exclusive, super expensive, super everything brand. I wanted it for the shop as it provides a benchmark of who we are and what we’re about.” Jacques Marie Mage: “All frames are handmade in Japan and are limited edition so once it’s gone it’s gone. They can make a batch of 500 or just 100. This brand is definitely a favourite with customers.”

“For me it’s all about finding the most creative people out there. When starting out I had to knock on a lot of doors, but more and more people are approaching me now. Edney & Edney has made a bit of a name in the industry; people want to partner with us. For example, Chrome Hearts – a super exclusive, super expensive, super everything brand. I wanted it for the shop as it provides a benchmark of who we are and what we’re about. I eventually got to meet them and bought a lot of their stock. Ayshah nearly killed me actually as you could buy a car with what I spent but the fact is we haven’t looked back since. That’s how exclusive they are and now similar brands of that ilk are knocking on our door. “It’s great when these eyewear companies want to work with you. During the first lockdown we didn’t know when or how we would be trading and yet each supplier contacted me saying: ‘don’t worry about anything until you’re open again’. If we were trading with bigger companies it would have been the opposite attitude and that’s why lots of opticians went by the wayside during the pandemic. But we’re working with lots of small companies, and if we’re not here for them they’ve not got anyone to sell to. That’s why we work collaboratively. I also think people want to support small local companies especially now.” Having such high-end covetable companies in stock means that Jamie and Ayshah welcome clients from all over the place. “We have a huge reach with people coming from all along the south coast from Brighton across to Folkestone and Whitstable and up to London and beyond.” Jamie adds they even have clients coming up from places such as Bristol to check out their new season stock and that the best way to get their name out there is always via word of mouth. “Recommendation and referral are key. We are very lucky that people

don’t just buy our glasses but also buy into what we are doing. People like recommending and people like being recommended. It goes back to what Ayshah was saying earlier: We find that we have a very supportive community here in Tunbridge Wells. We have lots of stylish people coming in and saying they have seen so and so wearing our glasses. It’s funny because normally people don’t pass comment on people’s glasses but with ours they do!” Given the business’s continued success would Edney & Edney ever be tempted to expand? “No,” Jamie responds swiftly. “We have been asked about this and there are some areas we could definitely go into but this store is Ayshah and me. If we expanded one of us wouldn’t be here in Tunbridge Wells and I think we have only just scratched the surface of what we can do here. So yes, I think we’re here for the long term and we want to keep doing what we do: sourcing and stocking exclusive and unique frames, providing excellent customer service and approaching things from a different perspective.” And finally what do the couple like most about trading in Tunbridge Wells? “The clients. Until we opened ago I’d spent 22 working in a traditional opticians and if you sat in front of me you’d probably say ‘ugh I need new glasses’. Whereas here it’s the opposite. People are excited about getting new glasses! I had a woman in here the other day from New Zealand. Her sister had recommended she pop in while she was visiting and so she booked into see Ayshah and is now having four different pairs made up! “She came in and said ‘my sister told me you had some really funky glasses’! She was absolutely delighted with what we could offer her - and she wanted to be here which is just joyous. I can honestly say we come to work buzzing and we leave buzzing as we know are making a difference.”

Kirk and & Kirk: “This is the colourful brand! They are made by English designers, based down in Brighton and this sells so well for us. Robbie Williams’ head of security wears a pair from us and Robert Downey Jr champions it.” theo: “Hailing from Belgium again theo is all about colour – and form too. The brand’s optics are just beautiful. They are easy to wear pieces but are unique so you’re not going to find many people wearing this brand locally.” l.a Eyeworks: “The brand was started 42 years ago in Los Angeles by Barbara McReynolds and Gai Gheradi. The idea was to challenge the notion of traditional, safe eyewear and they have certainly achieved this with their collections! They regularly collaborate with celebrities including Ru Paul.”

After two tough years due to the pandemic the Times Business Awards returned last month. The event, which was held at Salomons Estate saw 200 guests representing over 100 businesses descend upon the venue in order to celebrate their success – and they certainly did it in style! The event, which took place on Thursday March 24, was hosted by legendary daytime and breakfast TV legend, Eamonn Holmes. During a delicious three course dinner he regaled guests with his trademark Irish charm and

interesting anecodes. Guests also heard from Ian Alsop, General Manager at Lexus Tunbridge Wells the main sponsor of the event – as well as head judge Jo James OBE, chief executive of Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce. Once all ten category awards had been given out it was time to hit the dance floor. Mint DJs and a talented saxophonist had the crowd dancing all night until the wee small hours when carriages were finally called. After a Covid-enforced hiatus of two years it’s fair to say the Times Business Awards was a huge hit...

Family Ties

Husband & wife team Lynne and Michael Gadsden

This month Lynne Gadsden from Grovewood Wealth reveals how you can be a ‘good ancestor’ – for both your family and the planet – if you invest responsibly for the future

W

e are increasingly finding that not only do people want to secure their wealth for generations to come and build a better future for their families - but they want to do it in a ‘green’ way. They want a better planet for their children and grandchildren and to be a good ancestor. Many of us are making changes in our own lives, such as buying an electric vehicle, buying local, cutting down on our use of single use plastic, switching off lights and taking a shower, instead of a bath. However, even the most eco-aware of people are surprised when we tell them that there are significant ecological benefits from simply moving their pension savings. In fact, it can make a bigger impact than you’d imagine. If you’ve got a pension, then you are an investor, and this means you have influence. You can decide – in a positive way – which type of business gets to benefit from your funds. In this way, you can shape the future and do your part in encouraging better business practises.

WHO DECIDES HOW TO USE YOUR MONEY?

The money in your pension is being used on your behalf right now. People you’ve never met are deciding which companies to invest it in to help it grow. The money in UK pensions was £6.1 trillion between 2016 and 20181 - a huge amount which is mostly used by companies to keep expanding and profiting. They all need this money to keep running and to grow. These companies’ actions have a huge impact on the environment – far more than we can ourselves. For example, getting one person to boycott plastic is good. Getting one global company to stop selling it completely, makes a huge impact.

MONEY TALKS AND YOUR PENSION IS LOUD! Until recently, the focus of pension investments was solely on financial returns. But, as the world wakes up to the severity of the global environmental crisis, responsible investing has become a bigger priority. Responsible investing – also known as environmental, social and

"Doing business the old way damages the planet and won’t leave us with a world we want to live in 50 years from now"

governance (ESG) investing – directs money into high-performing companies that operate sustainably, which means you could earn returns while taking better care of the planet and its people and in turn your future generations. Doing business the old way damages the planet and won’t leave us with a world we want to live in 50 years from now. Shifting our trillions of collective pension pounds away from companies with poor records towards those that are improving their environmental impact does three extraordinary things: 1. It forces companies with a negative impact to improve their way of working 2. It gives good organisations a financial boost 3. It can help deliver returns for you, the investor. Many of the companies with strong ESG principles are exciting, cuttingedge businesses. They have better long-term growth prospects and could be worth far more in the future because they are, by nature, more sustainable.

better future for all. While people may be engaged with the idea of investing responsibly, it’s understandable that they do ask if this ‘greener’ way of doing things will mean sacrificing a return on their money? The simple answer is ‘no’. Responsible investing doesn't have to be a tradeoff between doing the right thing and achieving long-term returns. St. James’s Place fund managers regularly engage with businesses to hold them to account and ensure they are making measurable strides towards sustainability. When it comes to ESG, fund managers are considering the planet, people and fair play and these factors are used to assess how companies behave and manage their impact on the world. At St. James’s Place, we ‘believe that through responsible investing, we can help shape a better world and build a sustainable future’. We want all our clients to achieve financial wellbeing in a world worth living in. Imagine if every person with a pension made sure it was responsibly invested. The more people who do so, the bigger the impact will be. The shift could be seismic. Take charge of what other people do with your money – and by the time you come to spend it, the planet could be in a better shape. If you want to discover more about how your money can make the greatest impact by allocating investments in a mindful manner, then do get in touch with us. The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. And where’s your favourite place to go to take in the views? Hands down they’re at The Beacon. The views over Happy Valley can only make you feel very relaxed especially if the sun is shining and you can sit outside on the terrace.

This month SO magazine chats to Chris Hammond of local boutique developer Beau Property. The company was founded by Chris in 2009 with the aim of delivering a tailored and high-quality solution to all aspects of the residential property market. From sourcing and acquiring land and property, to refurbishing homes Beau Property can manage everything from start to finish. Their most recent development is Nevill Row, a collection of eight modern, finely-crafted Victorian-style homes near The Pantiles

If you’re looking to relax and unwind, where’s your favourite place to go? For me it has to be Sweat-It which is a small group training gym only five minutes away from home. I get one hour with no phone and therefore no distractions. Where’s the best place to meet friends and socialise? Meeting friends on The Pantiles is great as children can run around and there is such a good choice of places to eat and drink. What do you do when you spend a weekend or day off in the local area? If I have a day off during the week I try to fit a round of golf in at The Nevill and on the weekends we like to go out as a family for a walk followed by a lunch somewhere nearby.

Where do you live? We live in a small village next to Groombridge called Withyham – a really quick 15-minute drive from Tunbridge Wells. How long have you lived there and what made you decide to move there? We moved here two and a half years ago just before the first Covid lockdown. We were expecting our second child and needed more outdoor space, we were living in the centre of Tunbridge Wells beforehand but having grown up in the country the lure to move out of town was calling. Where’s your favourite place to shop locally? I love having a wander around The Pantiles and the village area of Tunbridge Wells. I have recently been shopping in Gray & Co the men’s fashion shop in Chapel Place. There aren’t many men’s clothes shop in the town but Gray & Co is a little treasure. Where’s the best place to go for a Sunday stroll? My family and I love a trip out to Ashdown Forest. It isn’t far from us and there are so many wonderful walks of different lengths and some incredible views to take in.

“Tunbridge Wells has got so much to offer, lots of independent shops, restaurants and bars which cater for all ages”

Where’s the best place to get a cup of coffee from in your opinion? I actually don’t drink tea or coffee BUT I had the most incredible brownie from Hatton’s on The Pantiles last week which kept me going during a long day of viewings at our recently launched show home at Nevill Row. Where do you take people when they come to visit? We always take friends to The Pantiles. Not only is it a really short walk from our latest development at Nevill Row everyone who visits just falls in love with it. I think it’s such a unique part of Tunbridge Wells that sets us apart from other commuter towns. Tunbridge Wells is stepped in history yet still retains a real buzzy vibe.

What’s the night life like where you live? Well having two young children it’s not something we see that much of! However, the town does have a lot to offer, we had dinner in Coco Retro last week which was fabulous as always. The Gin Bar is always a firm favourite for some drinks and I hear The Vault is pretty good for a bit of late night dancing!

Why do you love where you live? Tunbridge Wells has got so much to offer, lots of independent shops, restaurants and bars which cater for all ages. Live music and food festivals are on regularly and London is only 50-minute train ride away. The town has got a great buzz, lots of friendly people and if you want to get into the countryside it’s on your doorstep with lots of incredible walks.

Where’s your favourite place to eat locally? The George and Dragon in Speldhurst. Bobby Brown the chef is taking the menu from strength to strength and the new outside area is so family and dog friendly.

I do hope you are able to pop in and visit us in due course. We’re in the Corn Exchange at 49 Lower Walk on The Pantiles, and can be contacted on 01892 322777 or by way of hello@pantilesarcade.com

We’d like to think that you’re already aware that we have reanimated the long-redundant Corn Exchange on the Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells. It’s been brought back to life as a vibrant, up-market antiques emporium under the guiding hand of TV’s Eric Knowles and – since opening last summer – has attracted several leading purveyors of the decorative arts, and can now boast showrooms packed with everything from pre-Roman antiquities to the finest pieces of 20th century art glass, deco furniture and objets d’art. However – we’re now taking one step further, and bringing back to life one of the traditional crafts which went a long way towards first establishing the reputation Tunbridge Wells once it had become recognised as a go-to tourist attraction in the latter part of the 18th century. Since opening, we have made great efforts to acquire and

curate as broad a collection of Tunbridge Ware artefacts as possible. This astonishingly intricate craft – dating back over 200 years – was centred around The Pantiles, where we now reside, with manufactories and shops crowding around the then heart of the growing town. After a century or more of pre-eminence, though, Tunbridge Ware fell out of favour as new ideas swept across Europe under the guise of the Art Deco movement of the 1920’s – there was little room for homespun crafting amidst the overwhelming urge to embrace modernity. However, we have been so taken by the skill and dexterity that went in to manufacturing at the premises on Frant Road and around the fringes of The Common that we have resolved to fit out our own workshop, and recommence the production of new Tunbridge Ware items, whilst keeping a close eye on the

traditional methods used by our crafting forebears. As with the original trade, we have begun with geometric patterns made from tiled wooden veneers, and will have some utilitarian dining and kitchen accoutrements for sale – drinks coasters, table mats and the like all based on ‘original’ Tunbridge Ware designs. In the first instance these will be available exclusively from our own outlet at The Corn Exchange, either to personal callers or via our existing on-line portal at ScottishAntiques.com. We will also be running a stall, specifically to sell these items, at the upcoming Easter market on The Pantiles – please do come and pay us a visit and play your part in re-establishing one of the town’s traditions.

“We can achieve so much as a community” On the second anniversary of the TN card being launched here its founder, and SO contributor Jess Gibson, explains how it works and how she celebrated with its many members...

In February 2020 I launched the TN card as a new way to encourage us all in Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge to support our local independents which are the commercial lifeblood of our towns. A couple of years on and the TN card supports just shy of 600 independents; has expanded into Sevenoaks and boasts 2000 members, all enjoying rewards for supporting local. The TN card also supports mental health charity West Kent Mind through membership sales, events and fundraisers. To date over £11K has been donated, making a big difference to the services the charity can provide. Last month, to coincide with the TN card’s second birthday, the TN card

“A huge thank you to the businesses who’ve joined the TN card scheme over the past two years and to every one of our members”

app was launched – moving the loyalty scheme online with digital memberships and exciting functionality that makes it easier than ever to find local rewards. To celebrate, I hosted three special drinks receptions for our High Street independents in Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks, each one especially curated to commemorate each town. In Tonbridge, I welcomed the town’s businesses to the prestigious Tonbridge School where we enjoyed canapés from Tonbridge School Events and drinks from our TN card partners: Sparkling English wine from Chapel Down, cider from Charrington’s, beer from Pig & Porter, coffee from Bean Smitten and chocolate from Mimi Coco. We were joined by speakers Matthew Boughton, Leader of Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council and Ceri Hodgkiss, Training Manager for West Kent Mind. Goodie bags included chocolates from Mimi Coco and gift vouchers from COOK. Thank you to Warners Solicitors and Tonbridge School for supporting the event. In Tunbridge Wells, we celebrated the town at TN card partner the Old

Auction House, a dynamic new independent off The Pantiles. It was the perfect venue for honour both new and established independents. Guests feasted on a menu that included salads, slow roasted veal, cheese and charcuterie and mini desserts, washed down with sparkling English wine from Chapel down and beer from Cellar Head Brewing Co. We were joined by Cllr David Scott of Tunbridge Wells Borough Council and Kate Barnes of West Kent Mind who spoke about the power of community. Goodie bags included freshly baked cookies from Crumbs & Treacle. The celebrations ended with a flourish courtesy of a drinks reception for Sevenoaks independents and partners at Hive Restaurant at Well Court, Bank Street. ccording to an online survey, an estimated 54% of the UK population will have set themselves a New Year’s resolution for 2022. That’s 28 million people taking deliberate steps to better themselves as the year kicks off. More than half had made the same resolutions, or similar ones, among the common theme of addressing health behaviours in either diet or exercise.

behaviours that work for you now. Everything successful starts off with little and often. You Don’t Enjoy It Ever heard of the phrase ‘work that doesn’t feel like work if you enjoy it?’ The same goes for exercise and good health. Finding the optimal balance between the foods you need and the treats you love is what is going to lead to success. If you hate every minute of working out, you’ll find any excuse not to go. Changing your lifestyle doesn’t have to be an endless battle. Too restrictive, Cutting Out The Fun The cold turkey method isn’t the only way to reach your goals. Whether it is to fit into a wedding dress, change careers, become a fitness competitor or simply live pain-free; we invest time into each person, understand their why, and strategise a plan to help them get there. Should I combine my pensions into one pot? If you’ve worked for several employers throughout your career, you might have accumulated multiple pension plans. You may also have set up personal pensions, especially if you’ve been self-employed or a contractor at some point. Owning multiple pensions can be an administrative burden, but it could also be costing you financially – whether that’s through excessive fees or poor investment performance. Consolidating your pensions into one pot could help you keep track of your finances more easily, reduce charges, and boost how much Pension consolidation: the pros money you have at retirement. But while there are advantages to Keeping on top of several pensions can pension consolidation, there are potential drawbacks and it’s be time-consuming. If you have, say, five pensions, then that’s five lots of important to seek advice on whether it’s right for you. To help you investment performance to monitor, five get started, here are some of the pros and cons to consider.

different charges to keep an eye on, and five statements to read through and understand each year. Few people have the time, inclination or even the know-how to do this accurately. For some people, therefore, transferring pensions to one provider may simply be about making their ‘life admin’ more straightforward. You’ll also be paying the administration fees for each of your pensions, which may not be cost-effective. This is especially the case for those providers operating outdated and uncompetitive charging structures. Fees eat into your investment returns and may ultimately reduce how much money you have at retirement. By combining your pensions, you might be able to save on charges. Fees aren’t everything, however, as you also need to consider the performance of each pension fund. It may be that some of your pensions have poor investment

performance, and that moving to a different scheme offers better investment growth potential. Comparing charges and investment performance isn’t easy to do on your own – if you’re at all unsure, speak to an adviser.

Pension consolidation: the cons Consolidating your pensions could prove financially detrimental if it means giving up valuable benefits and guarantees. Ones to watch out for include: Enhanced pension commencement lump sum: this lets you withdraw more than the standard 25% tax-free lump sum when you start accessing your pension Protected pension age: this enables you to access your pension savings earlier than age 55 (or 57 from April 2028)

Tracing lost pensions You might have pensions from earlier on in your life that you’ve lost track of, especially if you’ve moved house. They’re not always easy to find, as many pension providers have merged and changed their names over the years. One place to start is the government’s free Pensions Tracing Service. You type in the name of your former employer or pension provider, and it gives the contact details you need to request information on a lost pension.

Guaranteed annuity rate: this lets you buy an annuity at a set percentage of your accumulated fund, which may be far higher than annuity rates today Built in life insurance or critical illness cover These benefits and guarantees aren’t always easy to spot, so it’s worth having your pension plans thoroughly assessed by an adviser. Otherwise, there’s a risk you’ll throw away a valuable perk and end up with less money in retirement. An adviser will also check whether any of your pensions charge large exit fees and, if so, advise whether it makes sense to stay put.

Beware pension scams If you decide to have your pensions reviewed, then it’s really important to be

wary of pension scams. Unfortunately, even the most financially savvy people can fall victim to scams, potentially losing their life savings. Ensure you reject unsolicited calls, emails and text messages to reduce the chances of being lured in by a scammer. Before moving your pensions, make sure the firm that gave you the advice is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and is authorised to give pension advice.

Next steps Consolidating your pensions isn’t a decision to be taken lightly. The money you’ve built up in pension funds over the years could be substantial, and a seemingly simple decision could turn out to be a mistake and harm your future financial security. On the flipside, making the right decision could mean a bigger pension pot at retirement, and a more comfortable future for you and your family. An adviser can assess your options and advise on the right course of action, so you can feel confident you’re on track for a secure financial future.

Flimwell Park has been designed to connect people with its woodland surroundings and show how sympathetic architectural development can co-exist with nature. Here its visionary architect Steven Johnson tells Eileen Leahy more this pioneering project

he potential for Flimwell Park is huge,” declares Steven Johnson, chief architect of the new, sustainable and mixed use development located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), just off the A21. I’ve made the short journey down that very road from Tunbridge Wells to meet Steven in order to find out the story behind this groundbreaking development which is set in 46 acres of ancient woodland and was officially launched last year. The principle idea behind it he tells me is to offer both locals and those from further afield a multibeneficial space in beautiful surroundings which comprises co-working spaces, accommodation and hospitality, courtesy of the stunning range of custom-built timber buildings on site. The land was originally occupied

by Flimwell Bird Park, but in 2001 it was purchased by developers Chris and René O’Callaghan who had a vision of not just protecting the ancient woodland but also creating somewhere that could be used for education and leisure too. After years of negotiating, planning consent was finally given at the end of 2015 and then construction began. “Where we’re standing right now was a total mud bath with Japanese knot weed everywhere,” explains Steven who runs The Architecture Ensemble. “Then things slowed down even further upon the discovery of a very rare flower called Heath Lobelia. Our botanist discovered it and Kew Gardens immediately sent down a team to investigate.” This discovery also piqued the interest of the BBC1’s Countryfile team who paid Flimwell Park a visit earlier this month to film – but more on that later…

“Our team has created something very special here”

Like Chris and René O’Callaghan Steven’s business ethos has strong roots in capitalising on the benefits of working with nature – he and his team specialises in only using wood for construction where possible, and a strong belief in any work they carry out should also be for the good of the greater community too. So it makes perfect sense as to why Steven and his team got involved with the pioneering Flimwell Park project. “Flimwell hasn’t had any funding since pretty much the Second World War,” he explains. “It will never have a high street to bring people together because the development of the A21 put paid to that. So, to have something here where villagers can get together and involved in something is hugely important. What’s amazing about this project is there was no one objecting to it. That’s extraordinary and shows that the people of Flimwell really wanted investment.”

Business

All this, along with its obvious aforementioned eco credentials and location, are the very reasons Countryfile paid it a visit earlier this year. The episode, which aired on March 6, also focused on the development’s committed use of timber, iron and clay. Countryfile presenter Matt Baker saw the use of clay in Zankhana Patel’s pottery business, The Potters Studio (pictured below), which is based in one of the site’s eight impressive timber business pods. The BBC crew was also present for the firing up of a prototype anagama kiln which was built in the woods by students of The Design for Manufacture programme at The Bartlett School of Architecture, at University College London (UCL). The university has strong connections with the site as Steven is also a part-time lecturer there. In addition to the eight timber business premises there is a huge barn style building, which is on the site of the original Flimwell Bird Park visitor’s site and currently still under construction. In addition to this there is the beautiful Birchwood café and restaurant which is run by The Small Holding’s Will Devlin who has a green Michelin star. Then

Steven Johnson with the Countryfile team

there’s a handful of houses – some already occupied and others still being built – which make the perfect pad for anyone looking for a home that is eco-friendly but high end - and not your run of the mill new build. What was the inspiration for the designs I ask Steven? “It’s 20 years of travelling through the countryside here and spying the most gem-like buildings. The fact that it’s an AONB is also important but what inspired most of the buildings stems from the area’s period houses which all came from the earth. There’s a lot of clay, a lot of tiling, a lot of wood and a lot of bricks.” Steven goes on to say that the development of Flimwell Park is about ‘creating something that’s going to be eco-friendly but also give people an opportunity to live and work in a community that wants to preserve and celebrate the nature we are working within’. Businesses trading here are already doing so. They include the Wild Iris spa, The Hive a co-working hub, Quench Cycle hire and the aforementioned pottery. There is also a special workshop for UCL students and lecturers. Then there is an offering of small

Architect Steven Johnson

apartments which can be rented out for the night or a weekend – these have proved very popular on Booking.Com and with visitors who want to explore nearby Bewl Water, Bedgebury Pinetum, Bodiam and Scotney castles. Despite years of red tape, when planning permission was granted the powers that be were so impressed with what Chris, René and Steven had in mind that they said if Flimwell Park was a success they could go back to them with more ideas for similar projects. “The planners said this was unprecedented as there was no blue print to work from. So yes they were nervous but they also said if it’s a successful development then come back to us and let’s talk further. Already the whole place is

full and we’re not even finished building it so it bodes well for the future. Flimwell had no investment whatsoever and all of a sudden people are coming here now – it’s an incredible turnaround.” In addition to all Flimwell has to offer there are 60 car park spaces, numerous Tesla and generic electric vehicle charging points and the opportunity to even grown produce if chef Will Devlin wants to. “In the main big barn there are three floors and we are hoping to incorporate a green house up top to grow food for the Birchwood restaurant.” The wish for the barn is that it will also double up as a UCL workshop and events space too. Steven adds that they are even working on getting an electric

shuttle bus set up so it can ferry UCL students to and from the train and bus stations nearby so they aren’t forced to come in cars. For those planning on visiting Flimwell Park for the day then there’s plenty to do too. From having a treatment at the tranquil Wild Iris spa, to a delicious lunch or smoothie at Birchwood or simply walking around the surrounding coppiced woodland. There’s even a forest school now up and running for pre-schoolers. “We’re also hoping to create a children’s nature trail and around about now the bluebells should be coming into their own,” smiles Steven. “Our team has created something very special here.” www.flimwellpark.com SO Magazine | April 2022 | 31

Sitting proudly above a run of independent shops at the top of the High Street, it’s always had an alluring appeal for me and I’ve often wondered what it must be like to dine there. Illuminated from within by opulent chandeliers emanating a warm and inviting glow, I’lladmit I’ve also felt quite envious seeing the silhouettes of couples clearly enjoying a wonderful evening of wining and dining. The reason for my slight twinge of jealousy? Well because as a parent of two underfives, my partner and I rarely have the opportunity for a proper date night together… But with a special anniversary looming we were determined to

go out in style and of course the first place I thought of for the occasion was The Warren. The night we finally visited was a chilly late winter one, but I’m pleased to say we were very warmly greeted as we reached the top of the stairs and entered into the first floor restaurant’s inviting and wholly unique interior. If you’ve not been then it truly is a feast for the eyes. Its walls are glazed in metallic gold and there’s an eclectic mix of rustic antique furniture, quirky ornaments and exotic treasures accented all over the space, which is divided into several different sized rooms. The décor would suggest the restaurant’s owners have been collecting and then curating a life well-travelled - but also reflect the provenance of some of The Warren’s dishes courtesy of the touches of taxidermy dotted around. Bland and boring The Warren is not. Yet as much as the decor oozes

has also ensured that the wine menu echoes this focus on locality with a good offering of wines available to try.

UNDER STARTERS ORDERS

After mulling over our options but not being able to narrow things down easily we asked Olivier for some help. He told us that when he dines out he likes to try lots of starters. He therefore suggested we go for the Foie Gras, Duck Liver Parfait and the Rye Bay Scallops, assuring us they were ‘all very good’. Happily they were three of the dishes on our shortlist so we were sold. Also available on The Warren’s starter menu are Baked Dorset snails (£9.45) and two vegan options - Cashew Feta Salad (£8.25) and Quinoa & Lentil Croquettes (£7.95). Ahead of our starters, Olivier presented us with a shot glass containing an amuse bouche: a warm, silky elixir of celeriac, potato and tarragon vinegar served with crusty bread and butter. We were soon served our beautifully presented starters and both instantly made a move on the perfectly seared Rye Bay Scallops (£14.55). They were artistically SO Magazine | April 2022 | 35

plated up with a deliciously tangy tart apple puree, parsley foam and little shards of crispy serrano ham. The balance of salt and sweet beautifully complimented the delicate scallops. The buttery pan seared golden Foie Gras (£14.95) was accompanied by a delicious rhubarb chutney and a gently spiced parkin, reminiscent of gingerbread. My favourite choice of our trio of starters however was the Duck Liver Parfait (£9.95). This didn’t surprise my partner in the slightest as I always opt for this if it’s on the menu. But The Warren’s interpretation was truly one of the best I’ve ever had as the combination of rich duck liver presented in the lightest, silky smooth textured parfait looked and tasted gorgeous. And the unique cherry beer compote

it came served with cleverly cut through the strong gamey flavour.

THE MAIN EVENT

Although The Warren’s menu is not hugely extensive, the options are so appealing that once again, it took us a while to make a final decision. Here there is something for all tastes and price points, from the selection of five different flavours of Shetland Mussels (£19.90), to Chargrilled Pork Loin Steaks served with Macaroni Cheese, Corn & Black Bean Salad and Chimichurri (£22.95). Then of course there’s the ultimate indulgent food for sharing: a 33oz Cote de Boeuf for two (£79.95). In the end though we decided to order the Harissa Lamb Shank (£27.95) and the 8oz Ribeye Steak (£29.50) which we both fancied and so agreed to swap

“One thing that’s clear from the outset is The Warren’s emphasis is firmly on the provenance of its ingredients”

dishes at the halfway point! As our mains arrived we certainly weren’t disappointed: the Ribeye was seared to medium-rare perfection and elevated by the creamy rich blue cheese sauce we had chosen to accompany it. Served with chips made from Kentish potatoes, locally sourced ripe tomatoes and a fresh salad, it was a classic dish expertly executed. But the showstopper was the Harissa Lamb Shank, which was served theatrically on its end, towering over a bed of date, apricot and pistachio Bulgar wheat, tzatziki, preserved lemon and a zingy pickled salad of carrot and courgette ribbons. The majestically-presented meat fell off the bone and melted in the mouth. And yes, we really did fight over who would get the last flavoursome morsel!

JUST DESSERTS

Although we’d certainly been well fed, we couldn’t resist the dessert menu which boasted a diverse selection of sweet treats. These included the indulgent sounding Deep Fried Miso Mars Bar (£9.25) and the Half Dozen Egg Box of Homemade Chocolate with Salted Caramel and Elderberry Warren macarons (£7.50). I went for the Tonka Bean Panna Cotta, Poached Rhubarb, Cinder Toffee and Rhubarb Sorbet (£9.00) which was served in a stylish cocktail glass. The sorbet was crowned with a gorgeous edible pansy – a clever culinary nod to spring. It was so beautifully presented I almost didn’t want to eat it. But every spoonful was delicious and so I’m glad I did! Being Italian my partner chose the Affogato ice cream (£9.95) which happened to also be the vegan option. This traditional dessert is served with a shot glass

of Frangelico, a chocolate coated cinder toffee and an espresso to pour over the nutty hazelnut ice cream – and it got a huge thumbs up from him.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The Warren Restaurant is very much deserving of its place in the Michelin Guide, which it has retained for the past five years. I can honestly say the food, ambience and service was first class. And although The Warren is the ideal place to go for a special occasion it’s not stuffy – or overly expensive either. There are a number of affordable options on the menu and it’s certainly somewhere I’d suggest for a lunch with friends or an afternoon with family - their Sunday Roast comes highly recommended. I can’t wait to return as I’m sure no two meals here will ever be the same given The Warren’s approach to using ultra-local and seasonal produce on an ever evolving menu. A fantastic foodie experience! SO Magazine | April 2022 | 37

Why Cassidy’s is just the ticket for a great night out With the summer of 2022 shaping up to be a packed one full of great sport Richard Williams heads to Cassidy’s - Tunbridge Wells’ most popular place to enjoy a game or two on TV - to sample its ambience and tasty menu…

S

port has returned with a vengeance in 2022. Following scaled back events and delayed tournaments during the past two years due to Covid, the summer ahead boasts a host of big sporting fixtures. The Women’s Euro 2022 begins in July as do the Commonwealth Games, Wimbledon and a series of exciting cricket test matches. Then of course there’s Glorious Goodwood, the British Grand Prix final and also the FA Cup all to still come. But the sporting action doesn’t just stop there. In the autumn we’ll have the Fifa World Cup in Qatar to enjoy and also the Rugby League World Cup which is being staged here in England. Now if you haven’t been lucky enough to get tickets for any of the aforementioned events then finding the right spot to watch the action take place can make all the difference to how memorable these big sporting fixtures can be. And where better to cheer on as a punter than at Tunbridge Wells’ premier sports bar, Cassidy’s where you can eat, drink and celebrate the latest sporting successes.

A FRIENDLY START

Cassidy’s Sports Bar in Castle Street has been family-run for nearly two decades by John Hoare and Zoe Rolandsen. Having such a personal set-up certainly results in a friendlier and welcoming vibe than the usual chain-run sports bars. Cassidy’s menu contains all the usual favourites you want to accompany an evening or lunchtime watching a big game or momentous match, but it also boasts added foodie flair. They’ve certainly been creative with the classics such as burgers and loaded potato wedges – and generous for that matter too! If you’re just after a snack or an appetizer as you watch all the action, then I’d recommend the chilli nachos [£7.25], chicken wings [£4.95-£9.95], or the unique mac ‘n cheese croquettes [£6.95]. And Cassidy’s almost inexhaustible list of loaded potato tots options which range from chilli and pulled pork, to mac ‘n cheese, beef gravy and even marmite and cheese [£6.50-£7.50] are also worth checking out – if not for the intriguing variety of fillings. Cassidy’s is also a great place for the chip lover with three varieties on option: plain, cajun spiced and

tastebud tingling piri-piri [£3.75]. If you’re watching your carb intake then the good news is you can also source a delicious fresh salad and homemade coleslaw here too. The venue’s lunchtime menu is also worthy of a look if you are there before 3pm, as you will find a £15 set menu of up to four dishes, including generous sized sandwiches, flatbread pizzas, open sandwiches and wraps (all served with chips) as well as any of the aforementioned appetizers.

THE MAIN EVENT

For the hungrier, then burgers and hotdogs are the name of the game at Cassidy’s. But they don’t do things meekly at this sports bar as the burgers are towering culinary affairs boasting accompaniments galore and plenty of cheese and different relishes. And they taste absolutely delicious! The beef burger choices [£10.75£12.75] include some really novel varieties such as the ‘Truffle-nator’ which is served with white truffle, fried onion, mushrooms and garlic mayo. If beef isn’t your thing, then Cassidy’s chicken burgers [£10.50£10.95] come in almost as many different varieties. Their South Carolina is seasoned with spice and topped with mac ‘n cheese while the Tex Mex comes lavishly topped with chilli con carne and sour cream. Oh and non-carnivores will be pleased to hear the venue also serves up a number of vegetarian options too including meat free

DID YOU KNOW? Cassidy’s was originally the tap house for The Castle hotel. It was called The Castle Inn and opened in 1823 and traded under this name for many years until it became The Village and then Buffalo Bill’s. In 1997 it changed its name to Cassidy’s.

burgers and veggie wraps. When we visited, my guest and I were also really impressed with the hot dogs on offer. They include ‘The Classic’ [£8.95] with onions and mustard but there are also a few more adventurous additional toppings such as pulled pork [£9.95] and chill [£10.25]. If you decide to visit Cassidy’s with some little sports fans then ‘The Borrowers’ menu provides smaller versions of some of the venue’s most popular dishes – a nice inclusive touch as children’s options are often omitted from traditional sports bars.

ACCOMPANYING THE ACTION

Of course, you will need something to wash down all those burgers and fries down with and thankfully, being a pub Cassidy’s has some of UK’s finest beers on tap. These range from Peroni and Staropramen to some great real ales including Meantime London and Atlantic. There’s also a ‘guest ale’ which changes on a monthly basis. Cassidy’s is also a great place to keep yourselves entertained as you wait for kick-off thanks to the interactive darts and TV screens that seem to adorn every wall. It’s fair to say you will never be bored here! So if you’re after a decent bite to eat, a friendly welcome and somewhere really great to watch whatever sporting event takes your fancy this summer, then there is no better venue in town than Cassidy’s.

A Sparkling Success Story Balfour Winery is celebrating its 20th anniversary and has plenty to celebrate. SO magazine discovers the history of this family-run vineyard, which recently won a coveted Times Business Award, and why it continues to have such grape expectations

E

stablished in 2002, Hush Heath winery was founded by entrepreneur Richard Balfour-Lynne after his wife Leslie suggested they buy the 400 acres of land that surrounded their family home of Hush Heath, a 16th century manor in Staplehurst, when it went up for auction in 2001. The couple initially began by planting the classic trio of Champagne grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir, which resulted in their first vinous offering: a pink sparkler called Balfour Brut Rosé. “We just wanted to produce

a really high quality pink sparkling wine that we hoped would compare with Laurent Perrier and Billecart Salmon Rosé. That was our strategy,” Richard explains. Well it’s certainly one that worked, as Balfour Brut Rosé is now stocked in some of the world’s most prestigious establishments, including Fortnum & Mason, and is also on sale at selected branches of Waitrose. It’s also served in First Class on British Airways and on the Orient Express. TEAK restaurant is obviously known for specialising in serving up the finest cuts of rump, sirloin and fillet to customers dining in its chic restaurant located on Chapel Place. But now it has launched a fantastic new burger menu to further enhance its epicurean offering. Available every Wednesday and Thursday from 5pm the new menu has something for everyone – even those who don’t eat meat. The traditional burger has been given a gastro spin with the addition of shreds of pulled pork, slices of Emmental cheese and crispy shallots. And the chicken option is far from average as

the meat is butterflied and seasoned with tandoori spice. The Asian twist continues with the addition of onion bhajis, harissa, mint yoghurt and baby gem. And for those who want a vegetarian or vegan option there’s the delicious sounding roasted cauliflower steak with chipotle mayo and avocado puree. All come served with a brioche bun, skinny fries and a dressed side salad. Hypnotherapy

Karen Martin

Hypnotherapist

‘A

nxious dread’ is how a radio report from the Ukranian frontline described the mood in one of its cities under fire. Whilst most of us are fortunate to have no experience of living in a war zone, we all have that anticipatory fear at times. Subconsciously, millions of neurons are constantly firing in our brains, checking and cross-referencing emotions and memories with the primary purpose of ensuring our safety, survival and wellbeing. This essential safeguarding ability evolved to protect us from primaeval threats like predators. The fact that we don’t have the same exposure to the physical dangers faced by our primitive ancestors doesn’t stop our brains from reacting as if we do sometimes. Day to day stresses keep us on ‘amber alert’ when there’s often nothing to worry about. The biochemistry of this relentless, relatively low grade pressure causes inflammation and tension to build up in our bodies. Over time, it can be emotionally overwhelming and cause mental health issues.

Don’t make a drama out of a crisis… DOOMSCROLLNG

This month our resident hypnotherapist Karen Martin, who operates out of Salomons Estate, looks at the issue of how we can stop the dreaded ‘fear’ taking over during times of worry

Our lives are so different from the circumstances our brains are designed to protect us from. We have constant exposure to information about terrible things happening around the world. Even if we’re safe and danger is far away, ‘doomscrolling’ brings fear right up close, front and centre in our cosy world. It used to be that we didn’t know what was going on in the next village or town. Now technology and social media puts us in the thick of the battle, wherever it may be. The drip drip of disastrous news became a flood of fear when the pandemic hit. And now we have the threat that a madman with his finger on the nuclear button might just press it.

GOING NUCLEAR

Two very different global disasters are in the process of reshaping the world we live in. Both the pandemic and the war in Ukraine contribute to the uncertainty, lack of control and change which trigger anxiety and can lead to catastrophic thinking. Since the discovery of antibiotics, epidemics no longer pose the threat they once did. Until the late 1980s, when Glasnost ended the Cold War, the doomsday scenario of total nuclear destruction was the focus of the fearmongers. It’s shocking to be reminded that these dangers never really went away.

CATASTOPHISING

Anxious people are brilliant in a crisis. This is because they anticipate problems and mentally rehearse every possible solution until they get to the

disaster that can’t be fixed. And then they fixate on it. This is called catastrophic thinking. This is an extreme form of negativity which can become obsessive and overwhelming. Catastrophic thinkers are prone to presuming ‘everything’ is going to go horribly wrong. They love a good conspiracy theory and can reinforce their anxieties by doomscrolling for worst case scenarios. There is no limit to the online fuel for a catastrophic thinker’s firestorm of fear. Managing this anxious habit takes a mindful effort to get some perspective and accept the things that can’t be changed and change the things that can.

DE-CATASTROPHISING

Here are some tips for ‘decatastrophising’ and relieving the emotional distress of living with the expectation that disaster is always around the corner. Next time you find yourself in a panic about an imminent disaster, whether it be global or personal, you can calm your fears with ‘even though’ self-talk. For example, ‘even though I worry about my children, I know they are safe, healthy and happy’. This is a simple way of cancelling or neutralising negative thinking. Bear in mind, whatever alternative positive statement you use has to be true! Stop doomscrolling! Step away from the internet. It is human nature to gather information and be prepared. The essential purpose of anxiety is to safeguard. Ignorance is bliss but it’s also, by definition, stupid. Our unconscious mind runs a constant risk assessment of our environment and circumstances and is powerfully influenced by emotions. Fear keeps us cautious and alive but it can also destroy our ability to appreciate life. Don’t go looking for problems, focus on those you can do something about. Smell the roses. Easier said than done, you might say. When terrible things are happening around the world, remind yourself of how safe our little island is. We live in peace and prosperity compared to most of the rest of the world. Keeping a daily gratitude journal is a way of shifting emotional distress to a state of contentment.

WE ALL HAVE SUPERPOWERS

Of course, when you’re in the midst of a real and dangerous crisis, no amount of positive thinking psychobabble is going to make your anxiety go away! Anxiety is literally a lifesaver, giving us access to resources and abilities which kick in with an adrenaline dump and give us superpowers beyond our normal capacity. This turbocharged state isn’t sustainable all the time but it can be trusted to come to the rescue when needed. There’s no point in compromising happiness and health with catastrophic thoughts until there’s a catastrophe. You’ll cope better than you imagined... SO Magazine | April 2022 | 45

31B Hair What has Rod Prager learnt over the past five years since opening 31B Hair? Rod Prager, (owner & founder), was interviewed to find out what he has learnt since establishing his boutique hair salon five years ago, 31B Hair. Located in The Pantiles, he was also asked to share his views on how the impact of the last two years will shape the future of the hairdressing industry, as well as how the recovery can be sustained for the long term. “Hairdressing was changing and evolving before the pandemic, but it has now become an even greater business to be in. More importantly, I have learnt that:

The team at 31B Hair have their say

Clients have developed an even more careful approach when choosing a hairdresser

From interviewing Rod, and being in the salon, it is very visual as to how hard Rod has worked to create what feels like a family amongst his team. He has adopted a culture that feels open and friendly, almost like being in your front living room, with that extra cosy feeling of being in the Pantiles. Of course, not to mention his dog, Colin, who is very much a member of the team, as well as a hit with all the clients!

The lockdown has given clients the chance to change their hair; growing out their prelockdown colour, as well as their style, thus creating the opportunity to explore something different, both for colour and length options The needs of the clients are more varied which, in turn, naturally for 31B Hair, gives us the chance to enjoy our work even more. However, despite these positive changes, there remains a growing challenge in the industry; there continues to be a lack of hairdressers, due to those leaving the profession, coupled with less people having entered the industry. This has resulted in limited availability of appointments for clients.

Get in touch: 31B Hair are on the lookout for additional hairdressers to join their very friendly and progressive salon. Also, if you are a client of a lovely, dedicated hairdresser but feel they are undervalued where they are, 31B Hair would love to hear from them. 31B Hair are offering the following: Full or part time position Employed or self-employed Flexible hours Saturdays are optional High rates of pay for all experience levels.

“A priority, within the hairdressing industry, is to improve staff salaries. A pay revolution will have a positive impact, especially for retaining and recruiting good calibre staff.” He continued to say “paying the minimum wage can be a thing of the past and a pay revolution can be well underway. This will help to attract more people choosing a career in hairdressing, thus leading to becoming a higher paid stylist. This in turn will help the industry to recover from the current skill gap taking place.” When asking Rod about why he established 31B Hair, it was very evident that he had a clear vision. He explains “I wanted to bring a fully boutique and bespoke salon to the region that puts my clients at the very heart of the full experience. For that to be a possibility, my priority has always been for my team to be fully content on all levels, and if they’re happy then so are our clients. The salon consists of many long-term clients, and I want to thank them, and all my team, for being part of this incredible journey over the last 5 years…. Here’s to the next 5 years!”

Amy said, “not only do I enjoy working in a friendly environment but being self-employed enables me to have a great work/life balance and job flexibility. Another important factor is that we offer very fair rates to our clients. This helps to not only retain our loyal customer base, but to also attract new clients to the salon. As a team, we are very passionate about what we do and that benefits both the team, as hairdressers, as well as the clients alike.” Roni, (Sassoon Partner). Roni specialises in precision cutting. She said, “I really enjoy the friendly atmosphere, as well as being able to seek expert colour advice from my colleagues; we always support each other in order to provide our clients with the best service from start to finish.” Interviewed by Claire Power.

All our products, and the salon, are as environmentally friendly and vegan where possible and appropriate. We are proud members of the Green Salon Collective. Everything used in the salon is recycled. Nothing is taken to landfill. All energy is from renewable sources.

Naomi Murray fr om Botanica Health in Rusthall suggests n ine ways to build resistance to hay fever - now

S

pring is in full swing with the appearance of buds and daffodils, birdsong and brighter days. A season of new life, growth and opportunities. We welcome this seasonal change and look forward to enjoying all that a beautiful spring has to offer; the detoxifying dandelion, the blood purifying cleavers and the delicious wild garlic, packed with nutrients. Unfortunately for many, springtime can herald the start of sneezing attacks, itchy eyes, throat irritation and the feeling of being perpetually run down with the constant attack from allergens. Hay fever can begin in early spring and continue all through the summer. It can be hard to enjoy the bright, sunny days if you suffer with miserable symptoms. The best strategy is to build up your immune system before symptoms appear… Hay fever and chronic rhinitis are 47 | April 2022 | SO Magazine

an overreaction to something that the body should, and can, usually handle so the key here is to have a strong immune system. When you encounter an allergen, be it food, pollen or a dusty room, an antibody is produced releasing histamine which causes itching, swelling and inflammation. It is important to start preparing and strengthening the immune system before the hay fever symptoms start.

HERE ARE MY TOP TIPS:

Consume foods rich in bromelain, an enzyme found in pineapple and papaya, which is particularly effective at reducing inflammation, pain and allergies Eat the foods high in quercetin, a potent antioxidant flavonoid that has been shown to reduce inflammation, allergies and hay fever and supports the respiratory system. Foods include parsley, capers, onions, black plums, apples

and berries. Quercetin also acts as a zinc ionophore, a compound that can transport zinc ions across a cell membrane, increasing intracellular zinc concentrations, so supporting immunity Reduce or eliminate foods you know you don’t tolerate well. Bread and wheat products can be particularly hard on the digestive system and can lower immunity. You may also find that mucus forming foods like milk and cheese make your symptoms worse, so listen to your body Research points to the gut being the seat of a healthy immune system so it stands to reason if you balance your gut bacteria immunity will improve and strengthen. Optibac’s probiotic for Every Day has been shown to be beneficial for those with mild to moderate hay fever Bee Prepared by Unbeelievable Health is a tried and tested natural remedy for hay fever. Why a weekend in London is a capital idea for a mini break After not having visited the capital in nearly two years Karen Martin decided it was time to pay it a visit. Here she explains why she loves London – and all it offers…

O

ne of the things I love about Tunbridge Wells is its proximity to London. I lived there in my twenties, commuted in my thirties and now enjoy having one of the greatest cities in the world as a playground on my doorstep. Post pandemic, the capital is once again thriving and the Hastings line is busy at the weekends with party-goers, culture vultures, shoppers and sightseers. Amongst the grand hotels giving a warm welcome to weekenders is The Churchill, a Hyatt Regency gem in the heart of the West End.

Adding character throughout the foyer, restaurant and rooms is some really lovely original art. In my room, pen and ink drawings of a cat and dog were shaped out of some of Churchill’s greatest quotes. Charming and inspirational, they made me smile after a good night’s sleep. Beaming down on diners in the Montagu Kitchen restaurant is a twinkly painting of the great man himself and his beloved wife Clemmie.

Centre stage in the restaurant is an open kitchen where Executive Chef Roger Olsson and his team work with quiet efficiency, producing creative British cuisine with no fuss flair. Epic sourdough with pig dripping and melt-in-the-mouth Orkney scallops were a treat at dinner. The restaurant sits comfortably alongside the Michelin starred Locanda Locatelli where premium Italian cuisine is available at a price if you book well in advance. As a weekend destination, The Churchill ticks many boxes. As well as having two great restaurants on the premises, there are over 300 restaurants within less than half a mile. A better location for a gastronomic weekend exploring

lfa Romeo has finally revealed its Tonale SUV, after originally showcasing a concept version way back in 2019. Sitting underneath the larger Stelvio, the Tonale enters into a segment that is becoming more competitive by the day. Alfa Romeo has promised that the Tonale will be one of the sharpest cars to drive in the segment, while new mild- and plug-in hybrid powertrains should deliver great efficiency too. When it hits the road, however, the Tonale will have a whole lot of competitors to go up against. So, what are they, and should Alfa be worried? Let’s take a look…

AUDI Q3

Audi now has a fearsomely large range of SUVs and the Q3 is the one that fits the bill for a whole lot of buyers. It’s got that premium approach that people want from an Audi, but also features a surprisingly spacious interior and plenty of storage options. It’s offered with a variety of powertrains too, as well as all manner of specifications designed to cater for all manner of budgets. 58 | April 2022 | SO Magazine

BMW X2

BMW’s X2 is somewhat of a dark horse in this list. It’s often overshadowed by the larger X3, but still features all of the positives of the firm’s larger SUVs but in a smaller package. It’s got some cool styling features too, with the BMW roundels on the pillars being a particularly cool look. Much like others in this list, it’s available with a variety of engines including an efficient plug-in hybrid.

JAGUAR E-PACE

The E-Pace has recently been given a whole host of updates by Jaguar, which has transformed this compact SUV. Mainly applied to the interior, these changes have completely lifted the overall feel of the E-Pace. But it hasn’t changed one of the Jag’s biggest plus-points – how it drives. It’s also got a wide variety of engines to choose from.

RANGE ROVER EVOQUE

The Evoque is one of the go-to models in this segment, appealing to drivers up and down the country. It packs a lot of the premium feel from the full-size Range Rover into a more compact package while also delivering a surprising amount of

off-road ability. Recently updated, the Evoque now has an even better touchscreen and more intuitive in-car technology.

MERCEDES-BENZ GLA

The GLA is Mercedes-Benz’s most compact SUV but has all of the features that you’ll find in its larger models. Classy and well-styled, it’s got a really highend cabin as well as some clever on-board technology. It’s also available with a clean plug-in hybrid engine which will prove to be a hit with inner-city drivers who will appreciate its electric-only capabilities.

VOLVO XC40

Volvo’s XC40 has proved immensely popular with buyers, thanks to its wellmade interior and clever infotainment system. It’s also great to drive, with a refined nature that means it’s comfortable to drive regardless of the situation. Volvo has recently introduced a fully-electric version, which brings a decent range of over 200 miles and a surprising amount of performance.
