PAIN OF DIVORCE INCREASES THE RISK OF HEART ATTACK Research shows women’s health at greater risk of harm caused by the effects of emotional and psychological stress on the heart

BY MAX BARFORD

ENDING A MARRIAGE is never easy but the consequences can be far more damaging than first imagined. New US research carried out on 15,827 people showed that those who divorced had a higher heart attack rate than those who remained married. The study, published recently in the journal, Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality Outcomes, does not prove that divorce causes a heart attack but rather the emotional and financial stress of divorce can have an impact on the body that increases the chances of a heart attack. The research suggests men have a 10% increase of heart attack compared to a man who remains married. This rises to a 24% increase in risk for women compared to a woman who remains married. The risk increases substantially for second and third time divorcees with a jump to 77% increase for women and 30% increase for men. One of the main stresses of divorce is the uncertainty about what the future will look like post divorce. Not knowing whether the family home will have to be sold, what your finances will look like and how your children, family and friends will react all places a great emotional and psychological strain on you. As an experienced family solicitor I, along with my team, have helped many people leave an unhappy marriage and move on with their lives. Although every divorce is different, the one thing that is very clear is that reducing conflict involved and taking a conciliatory approach can only help lower stress and therefore the health risk for men and women. Taking control of your situation with the benefit of good legal advice will reduce stress and emotional anguish. It will also dispel many of the myths, misconceptions and fears

and help you make informed decisions about your future. You can explore the best way for you to negotiate a financial and emotional settlement with your spouse. You and your spouse may feel able to reach an agreement about how your finances and children matters will be settled between yourselves. You can then just seek legal advice for the agreement to be drawn up and filed with the court. If this isn’t possible, mediation, collaborative law or negotiation through your solicitor are all extremely effective ways of reaching a settlement. Whichever option is right for you the key issue is to know what a good settlement looks like for you before you reach any decision – this is what we call making informed decisions. If you get it wrong you will have to live with the implications for many years to come. Separation and divorce is never easy but taking legal advice at the earliest opportunity along with a conciliatory approach can reduce the stress brought on by divorce significantly and ensure you achieve the best settlement possible for you. Throughout May Max Barford & Co is offering a selected number of Times of Tunbridge Wells readers an opportunity to meet one of their experienced family solicitors for a free initial consultation to discuss the options available. They have 20 appointments available and we know from previous experience that these appointments will book up very quickly. If you wish to apply for a consultation to find out how you can achieve a conciliatory divorce with as little stress as possible contact Max Barford today on 01892 539 379 or email times@maxbarford.co.uk and quote reference T T WD0605.
