Conservation group’s concerns for 240 acres of ‘important’ natural beauty •

THOUSANDS of years of irreplaceable natural beauty, history and ecology could be wiped out as a result of a council development plan, according to the Woodland Trust. The Times has discovered a planning document earmarking 240 acres of ancient woodland for possible development, submitted by Tunbridge Wells Borough Council to the government.

TWBC insists the document is not a planning application, that no woodland would be lost if the areas covered were built upon and that by including them, they could be protected from other potential developments. But the Woodland Trust says it represents the biggest threat to natural woodland it has encountered in Britain. Senior conservation advisor Richard Barnes, a wildlife expert who knows the threatened areas well, fears any development could be catastrophic.

He said: “This is the first step towards the potential loss of our most ancient woodlands. “If this planning strategy goes ahead it opens the door to all sorts of issues in years to come, not only for wildlife but for the natural beauty of the area. “Ancient woods like these are nationally important and to destroy them would wipe out hundreds, if not thousands of years’ worth of ecology, history and beauty that can never be replaced.” For full story, turn to page 7
