Rocketing house sales have created boom in Tonbridge housing market

By Richard Williams ACTIVITY in the housing market in Tonbridge has doubled since last year, with some estate agents seeing a 150 per cent rise in house sales.

According to property website Rightmove, the town saw the seventh largest annual jump in the number of house sales in the UK during the summer.

But demand is outstripping supply, as there has been more than a 100 per cent increase in house buyers

wanting to move to Tonbridge.

Nationally, house sales have risen by 61 per cent compared to the same period last year,

The South East in particular has seen the largest growth in the housing market as tens of thousands of sellers have come to the market, and the top ten most active areas are all commuter towns.

Tonbridge has seen new listings increase by 95 per cent compared to last year, while five other commuter towns are in Rightmove’s top ten of most active areas.

Nearby Tunbridge Wells did not make the list, despite being a similar distance from London as Tonbridge is.

Areas that were in the top ten include Harlow in Essex, which has seen new listings surge 121 per cent compared to the same six-week period in 2019, Hertford in Hertfordshire (up 113 per cent), Wickford in Essex (up 105 per cent), St. Albans (up 100 per cent) and East Grinstead (up 98 per cent), all of which are a 70 minute train commute from Central London.

AROUND 90,000 meals were served up to customers in Tonbridge during the government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme, official figures show.

According to the Treasury, 88 restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs in the area took part in the initiative that saw a government-funded 50 per cent discount of up to £10 per head on food and any nonalcoholic drink consumed in sit down premises.

The scheme was introduced to help the beleaguered hospitality industry after many restaurants were forced to close due to the Covid lockdown.

During Eat Out to Help Out, more than 89,000 meals were served in

Tonbridge – with £633,000 worth of discounts paid out by the Treasury.

The average discount was £7.13 per head.

In Tunbridge Wells, 99,000 meals were dished up under Eat Out to Help Out, with a total of £534,000 worth of discounts being claimed by the 123 venues taking part.

But diners got less of a discount, with the average per head being £5.38.

Successful Nationally, more than 100 million meals were served under the state-backed scheme that ran all day on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the whole month of August.

So far, UK restaurants have made

130,000 claims worth £522million, but the figure is likely to rise as outlets have until the end of September to claim the money back.

Restaurant bookings surged during the scheme, especially on the final day.

According to data from booking site OpenTable, restaurant reservations rose by 53 per cent compared with the Monday-toWednesday period in August 2019.

Locally, many restaurants say their revenue was up 25 per cent compared to August last year thanks to Eat Out to Help Out, with nearly every table booked during the days of the scheme.

The scheme proved so successful for some restaurants that they are offering their customers the same discounts throughout September, but restaurateurs will not be able to claim the money back from the Treasury.

Theatre welcomes audiences back and says panto will return this year The EM FORSTER Theatre in Tonbridge is to welcome people back into its auditorium for the first time since lockdown began in March.

And this Christmas they have announced they will be putting on a panto.

While live theatre is not yet on the cards, audiences will be able to watch film screenings from this week and a live comedy night on September 18.

And this Christmas there will be a production of Robin Hood and his Socially Distanced Merry Men, after the planned panto, Beauty and the Beast, was cancelled due to Covid.

Last month, EM Forster Theatre held its first shows outdoors, but it has now been

given the ‘We’re Good to Go’ stamp from Visit England, to allow audiences inside.

Manager, Kat Portman Smith told the Times: “In August the announcement came that we could have live performances with social distancing in place which has allowed us to plan for opening in September.”

Comedy The first film screenings will be The Personal World History of David Copperfield (PG) on Thursday, September 10 at 7pm, followed by the musical adventure for youngsters, Trolls World Tour (U) on Sunday, September 13 at 2.30pm.

The EM Forster will also be putting on the National

Theatre Encore screening of Cyrano de Bergerac, postponed from March, starring James McAvoy on Thursday, September 17 and Sam Mendes’ award-winning First World War epic 1917 on Friday, September 25.

The popular monthly Comedy Night for over 16s returns on Friday, September 18 and the line-up includes comedians Neil McFarlane and Ben Norris.

Tickets for the films are £5 each and audiences can choose their seats online with a two metre distance between each household group.

Tickets for the NT Encore screening are £10. Tickets for the comedy night are £13.

‘We are seeing a trend or people wanting to move out of urban areas’ of residential sales at local estate agents Savills, says they have seen the amount of agreed sales in Tonbridge rocket month on month to 156 per cent compared to this time last year.

He told the Times: “Tonbridge has always been an attractive place to buy a property due to its rail links, the quality of the schools and the great value for money.

“In times of uncertainty, areas of real quality such as Tonbridge really stand out.”

Rightmove’s property expert Miles Shipside added: “We always knew that the stamp duty holiday was going to be a big incentive for people to get moving this year, and

urban areas and into smaller towns, with homeowners in built-up areas reassessing their housing needs and looking for places with more outside space.

“Lastly, proximity to a station doesn’t seem to be as important as it once was, meaning sellers in these commuter towns are looking to move a little further afield as working from home becomes a more permanent way of life.”

The news comes as mortgage provider nationwide says house prices have rocketed since lockdown ended.

The average house price in Tonbridge has increased by £3,000 from £404,626 last August to £407,657 this year.

Spike in Covid cases as UK infections rise THERE has been an increase in the number of local people testing positive for coronavirus.

According to Public Health England, 15 people in Tunbridge Wells and seven people in Tonbridge tested positive for the virus that causes Covid-19 for the seven days to September 4.

In Tunbridge Wells, the total number of infections in the borough has risen to 529, or 445 people in every 100,000.

In Tonbridge & Malling, 391 people have so far had coronavirus – just 296 people per every 100,000.

The UK has seen a growing number of people contracting coronavirus. On Sunday, 2,988 cases of the virus were reported in the UK in 24 hours.

It is the highest number reported on a single day since May 22 and a rise of 1,175 on Saturday. Officials put the rise down to an increase in cases in people aged 17-29.

Park runs to return THE popular parkruns in Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge are set to return in October, organisers say.

Nationwide Parkrun events were suspended worldwide in March because of the global coronavirus pandemic, but the five km will resume by the end of next month under government-backed Covid guidelines.

Parkrun’s chief executive Nick Pearson said: “We now believe, having spent considerable time gathering and understanding the evidence, that the benefits to reopening Parkrun far outweigh the risks.”

FOUNTAIN A burst water main on Frant Road reached 40 feet

TRAFFIC ground to a halt on a Tunbridge Wells road last week, when a burst water main led to a spectacular fountain that spouted 40 feet.

The water main erupted last Friday [September 4] afternoon on Frant Road, close to Tunbridge Wells Rugby Club.

One onlooker told the Times: “It was spectacular. The water spout must have been 40 feet high – I suppose, it is one way to keep your plants watered.”

Fountain Jenny Rhodes, Regional Network Manager, at South East Water said: “Most of the times the leaks we are finding are pretty hard to spot and hidden underground, we do occasionally have a real gusher to deal with and this one of Frant Road was called into us by Kent County Council on September 4.

“Our technicians were able to quickly attend and shut off the impromptu fountain so they could begin repairs.

“The road is currently being restored to its original state and two-way traffic lights are in place to keep motorists and pedestrians safe.

“We’re sorry for any disruption this may cause and anticipate the temporary lights will be removed by Thursday morning.”

POLICE are hunting for a man who indecently exposed himself in a number of Tunbridge Wells parks.

Kent Police say a man was seen committing an indecent act in Dunorlan Park at around 5pm on September 1. They believe the same man was also spotted exposing himself in the evening in a wooded area close to Hawkenbury Close.

Police were called again on Wednesday September a, when at 6.15pm a dog walker visiting Hawkenbury Recreation Ground saw a similar offence.

The suspect has been described as white, of slim build, around 5ft 8ins to 6ft tall and aged in his 40s or 50. Anyone with information should contact Kent Police.

Broadcast over Facebook, Local & Live in collaboration with Unfest has been viewed by more than 10,600 people when it was livestreamed last bank holiday weekend.

Festival Founder Paul Dunton told the Times: “Under the circumstances it was our only option to make it happen this year.

“But rather than do nothing, we wanted to keep the spirit of homegrown music alive and give local artists who have been prevented

from performing for so long, the chance to play to a real audience again.”

He said bands were playing behind closed doors at the Forum, while local pub The Royal Oak, hosted a low-key, live offering with acoustic artists.

Over two days, the event at The Forum boasted successful local artists Noble Jacks and Marie White as headliners topping a bill that included Sorrel Nation, Steffan James, Dull Knife, Tom Williams, The Charlie Rivers Band and Summit Of The Big Low. These were interspersed with interviews including local MP Greg Clark and radio presenter Phil Mills.

While local stars including The Breretons and Suncharmer played to a restricted audience at The Royal Oak. “Hopefully we will be back in the park next year,” added Mr Dunton, “but for now, I just want to thank everyone who made this event such a success.”

Workers at towns largest firms are returning back to the office

By Richard Williams STAFF at some of Tunbridge Wells’ largest employers are returning to their offices following the easing of lockdown restrictions and schools reopening.

Since March, when lockdown was introduced, staff from many of the town’s biggest companies and organisations began working from home.

But the government is now urging office workers to go back to their desks, due to fears over the impact working from home is having on town centre economies.

Ross Feeney, Chief Executive of the town’s Business Improvement District, said the difference in footfall was ‘markedly lower’ than before lockdown, which is hurting many businesses.

Capacity He told the Times: “The period of lockdown has made many businesses and office-workers realise that working from home can be both cost-effective and productive.

“However, not everybody wins – our town centre loses out. Like many town centres around the country, Tunbridge Wells has traditionally benefitted from hundreds of office workers visiting each day, either before or after work, or during their lunch hours - spending money in our cafes, shops and restaurants.

“To lose these visitors is an additional challenge for our town centre. It is incredibly important that our office workers return. It is also important that we retain our office space, and not succumb to widespread residential redevelopment.”

Rival law firm, Cripps Pemberton and Greenish based on Mount Ephraim, said Covid safety measures have reduced its office capacity by half.

But senior partner, Gavin Tyler, said: “From having a skeleton staff in the office from the start of lockdown up to the end of June, we have been opening up our office in phases through July and August – enabling limited numbers of our people to book a desk and access the office.

“We have kept our approach under constant review and as of September 1, we are able to safely accommodate 180 of our people on any one day – 50 per cent of our pre-Covid capacity.

“During August we had 45 people a day on average in the office, and this has climbed to 68 a day this week.”

Distancing BACK TO WORK: Employees at AXA and Cripps are among those returning to work at their offices In response, the Times reached out to some of Tunbridge Wells’ largest businesses about their plans to return to the office.

At AXA PP Healthcare – the town’s largest employer, which has around 2,000 workers says it is taking a flexible approach with employees working some days at home and some at its numerous Tunbridge Wells sites – but office capacity has been cut by a half.

A spokesman for the insurer said: “With restrictions easing, AXA PPP healthcare’s priority is to keep the number of employees choosing to return to the office at levels which make it possible to maintain social distancing in line with UK Government guidelines.

“As such, we’ve set capacity limits for our buildings that are open in terms of the number of employees that can work from them.

Alongside this (if it works for them), employees

can take a flexible approach, with some days in the office and others at home.

“Currently, for the buildings that are open, we are generally using about 50% of the capacity we could manage.”

Law firm Thomson, Snell and Passmore, which employs around 253 people in both Tunbridge wells and its Thames Gateway offices said they are taking a ‘phased’ response to returning to work.

CEO Sarah Henwood said: “Like many businesses, during lockdown the vast majority of our staff worked from home. We have a well-established and secure home working programme which has allowed us to continue to deliver a high-level of client service.”

But she continued: “We are taking a phased and agile approach to returning to our offices, which meets the needs of staff, clients and the

In early July, fewer than eight people were operating from the Town Hall that used to have between 150-200 people working from it. Now around a third of staff at Tunbridge Wells Borough Council have returned with around 60 people working from the building.

Chief Executive, William Benson, said: “The Town Hall has remained open and staffed throughout the pandemic and, as restrictions have been lifted, we have introduced a phased return for staff working in the Town Hall including for councillors and other organisations that use the building.

“Because of the need to comply with government guidelines on social distancing some staff will continue to work from home – as has always been the case.”

‘Light at the end of the tunnel’ for former ‘ghost town’ Monson Road BACK IN BUSINESS: TRADERS in a Tunbridge Wells road say they are looking to the future following one of their most difficult 12 months of business.

Last year, roadworks badly affected trade along Monson Road. And just as the works finished, the Covid lockdown began.

Clare Waller, who runs Jeremy’s Homestore on Monson Road with her husband Jeremy, said before the coronavirus crisis the road had become a ‘ghost town’, but things were now looking up.

“Last year was worse for us than this year in many respects. “We closed during lockdown but reopened at the same time as garden centres,” she said. “And week by week things are getting better and better for us.”

She said Jeremy’s Homestore worked on their online trade during Covid, diversifying to sell balloons and houseplants as well as home deliveries of their usual homeware stock.

“We had a website for a while but not many people knew about it, but now people are finding it harder to get to us so it has become more important,” said Clare.

“But we really want to promote all of Monson Road. It has such a varied range of shops and businesses and they have all had a difficult time.

“I’d love to see the farmer’s market come to Monson Road and the Amelia being built across the road could really be the light at the end of the tunnel for us all. Building has continued throughout lockdown we hope when it is finished that it brings people to the area.”

New hairdressing salon cut down by lockdown is back

Tea’s up at shopping centre cafe BACK IN BUSINESS: A SMALL family-run cafe and catering business in Tunbridge Wells is beginning to welcome its customers back.

Like most businesses in the hospitality sector, Taste Wells Café and Catering were hit hard by the Covid crisis, with their Royal Victoria Place [RVP] shop forced to close during lockdown.

Now, owner Derek Betts says more and more of its loyal customers are returning to the Upper Mall in RVP. He said: “We are back providing a range of made to order gourmet sandwiches, baguettes, bagels, wraps, salads, smoothies, milkshakes and yoggies.

“As the season begins to change our hot offering including jacket potatoes, paninis, ciabattas, hot wraps and the ever popular soups and sandwiches are becoming more sought after, as well as our hot drinks and cakes.”

But he added: “Our catering department run from a unit in Eridge Green mainly provides lunch options for local businesses, but with many offices still not functioning as before this remains challenging, but we are seeing a take up on our individual offering which can be ordered and paid for online.”

He says they offer lunch deliveries to the home or workplace in refrigerated vans, if they are ordered by 10.30am, within a ten-mile radius, for those that cannot get out or have limited time.

BACK IN BUSINESS: A HAIR salon that opened in Tunbridge Wells just three weeks before lockdown began has reopened – with new safety measures in place.

Owning her own salon was a ‘dream come true’ for former Toni & Guy stylist Natasha Hodges and she opened her Natasha Hodges Hair in The Pantiles on March 3.

Yet less than three weeks later, lockdown forced her business along with all other hairdressers across the UK to close.

“I have been hairdressing in Tunbridge Wells for the whole of my working life,” she told the Times.

“It has always been my dream to have my own salon and after a few years of running a salon with a partner I was able to open the doors to Natasha Hodges Hair on March 3.

“To be shut down 3 weeks later was tough.

“But I was determined not to let my dream dissolve or to disappoint my hard-working team, Tim, Dionne, Abbey, Lola and Hayley.

She said she spent lockdown expanding her business knowledge and keeping in regular touch with customers via social media – and even

offered a product delivery service.

“And now we’re all back and delighted to see all our guests again. We want them to have beautiful hair and to feel confident of their safety.

“Having a spacious, open plan salon is a great advantage and we have a strict Covid-safe protocol in place to ensure everyone feels cared for and protected.”

Since re-opening, the salon has become part of the ‘tn card’ scheme, and because Natasha says she ‘wants to give something back to our true heroes’ the salon is offering a 25 per cent discount to NHS key workers, care-workers in the community or at residential homes, and members of the police and fire services.

Co-working spaces could be set for a big post-Covid boom

By Richard Williams A GROWTH in collaborative working spaces in Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge could see both towns well-positioned to take advantage of changes in working habits following the coronavirus crisis.

While working from home has become part of the ‘new normal’, a recent survey found that 54 per cent of home workers felt they lost out on social interaction, while 52.5 per cent felt they lost out on professional interaction.

Deskrenter, who were the first to offer collaborative working spaces when they opened in 2013 with a single office in Tunbridge Wells, say the working model provides a solution.

The company has expanded to five locations in the town centre and one in Tonbridge, all providing a mixture of shared work spaces and individual offices within communal environments, including The House in Monson HOTDESK Collaborative workspace at The House in Tunbridge Wells

Road, which has developed in partnership with the council to support local creatives and has desk spaces for 54 workers.

Office Tribe also opened last year on Mount Pleasant by Desk Renter tenant Tom Olden.

Dominic Johnson, co-founder at The House told the Times: “Co-working is a very different beast from the serviced offices of old and isn’t about simply sharing space for ease.

He said in normal times the venue had been used for a series of learning events, for technical

and networking group meetups, and they have hosted over 80 such events in the three years since opening.

But they also providing free business support, providing around 20 members in Tunbridge wells and Tonbridgeaccess to £190,000 of much needed Coronavirus grants.

With more people working from home, businesses are now looking to cut costs and reduce their commercial property portfolios.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors’ latest commercial property survey found almost 93 per cent of its members saw businesses scaling back office space over the next two years.

Simon McArdle, MD of Deskrenter added: “We’ve recently seen a sharp rise in the number of enquiries from individuals.

“People who are either reluctant to resume commuting or who’s London offices remain closed and who find working from home much less productive.”

Green energy deal for public sector LASER, a division of Kent County Council’s Commercial Services, has created a system that allows public sector organisations to directly benefit from new wind and solar electricity generation, helping them work towards net-zero carbon targets.

Organisations could include county, unitary and district/borough councils as well as universities and NHS trusts.

LASER says the Dynamic Purchasing System (DPS) will allow organisations to use new green energy through Power Purchase Agreements, a contract whereby an organisation or authority agrees to purchase electricity directly from a renewable energy generator, providing financial certainty to both the organisation and the generator.

Driving Organisations will have control over electricity generation type – wind or solar, for example, length of contract and whether the generator is a new-build, driving new renewable generation in the county and further afield.

Online letting agency launched for TN area A LOCAL businesswoman has launched an online letting agency for properties in Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, and neighbouring villages.

TN Lettings has been launched by local Becky Moran who says in addition to the typical services offered by a letting agent, the online service provides landlords an ‘advertise only’ service where they can be supplied details of interested tenants.

The new business will also offer tenant-finding services, rent collection and fully managed property services for landlords.

Four decades in the kitchen business

Rencraft first started out building pine beds and bedroom furniture from a small workshop in Chart Farm in Sevenoaks September 1980.

Shortly after, the team responded to a client’s request for some kitchen furniture, with their first product known locally as The Wooden Kitchen.

Five years later the firm opened their showroom in Calverley Road in Tunbridge Wells, which has recently been refurbished to showcase Rencraft’s three product lines – Rencraft Bespoke, The Modular Kitchen and SieMatic by Rencraft.

“To reach our 40th birthday is a huge milestone and a credit to everyone involved with the company,” said managing director, John Stephens.

“As you may expect, there have been ups and downs along the way.

Hospital Trust remembers ‘the few’ on 80th anniversary

HISTORY HEROES: Mayor Joy Podbury and her escort Bob Podbury with the Heritage Open Day team and Cllr Jane March (second on far right) TUNBRIDGE WELLS will be the only town in the county to hold the annual Heritage Open Day this year despite the massive disruption caused by Covid-19.

The annual event, which sees many homes, churches and historic buildings open their doors in towns across the country, had been cancelled, but local organisers, who are all volunteers, have announced it will be going ahead in Tunbridge Wells, Southborough, Paddock Wood and the surrounding villages.

From September 11 to September 20, visitors will be able to access many historical buildings in the town, including The Forum, originally built in 1939 as a public toilet, and the rarely open archaeological site – the Georgian and Victorian Corn Milling in the Southborough Valley.

Highlights No other area in Kent has managed to put on an event this year due to the virus.

Paul Avis, chair of the Civic Society Heritage Organising group, said: “This year we were determined to put on a show despite the problems of Covid-19 and Lockdown.

“We are delighted to have put together a full package of buildings and events for the 16th year running. The highlights include All Saints Church in Tudeley, with its 12 stained glass memorial windows by Chagall, and Southborough Archaeology Society’s dig of Nineteenth Century corn milling, which is very rarely open to the public. And there’s an exhibition of memorabilia from Romary’s Biscuits – once one of the town’s major products that was shipped around the world, and the Pound, a former holding pen for lost animals in Grove Hill Road.”

Paul added: “We’ve also got a programme of conducted walks through the town and online lectures.”

There will also be a photo competition for students aged 11 to 18, challenging them to capture the theme of ‘Hidden Nature’ on camera.

With a first prize of £100 and runner-up prizes of £50, children will be encouraged to take their shots at heritage sites around the area.

By Jerome Bowman AS BRITAIN prepares to remember one of the most pivotal battles of World War II, a collection of images and stories from wartime doctors in Tunbridge Wells shows the ‘deadly challenge’ faced by town’s hospitals.

Next Tuesday [September 15] is the official Battle of Britain Day, when the role of British airman in defeating Nazi Germany is remembered across the country.

It is the 80th anniversary of the air battle, which took part between July and October 1940.

‘On September 12 1940, at just after 5 pm, a lone bomber dropped a string of high explosive bombs on Tunbridge Wells and five landed in and around the Kent & Sussex Hospital’ “A paperboy, who was doing the round as a favour, died in the explosion.

“The shrapnel damage to the foundation stone is still visible today and is on display in the

grounds of the new hospital.”

He continued: “A few days later on September 15, an enemy plane machine-gunned the hop fields at Beltring, injuring many East-Enders picking hops, who were taken to Pembury Hospital. Several died of their injuries including children.

“The later part of 1940 and in to 1941 would see the hospitals start to take casualties from the London Blitz – many patients from the east end were brought to Pembury. Dr Grasby’s daughter, who lived at the hospital, recalled hearing the bombers going overhead each night to deliver their deadly cargo to London,” Mr Weeks added.

Lasting from July 10 to October 31 1940, the battle occurred almost entirely in the air between British and German pilots.

Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust’s volunteer archive historian David Weeks said both sites were targets for the Luftwaffe.

He told the Times: “The Battle of Britain in the Summer of 1940 presented new and more deadly challenges for staff at Kent and Sussex Hospital.

“The experience was equally as bad as that of Pembury Hospital. The hospital was distinctive and high up, so it was easily visible from the air.

“The risk was so high the whole hospital had been daubed in camouflage paint, which proved difficult to get off and was visible for many years after the war. Camouflage netting was added on the roof and this frequently caught fire.”

He went to explain how a paperboy was killed in one raid and a bomb narrowly missed the hospital’s children’s ward.

He said: “On September 12 1940, at just after 5 pm, a lone bomber dropped a string of high explosive bombs on Tunbridge Wells and five landed in and around the Kent & Sussex Hospital.

Volunteer vows to clean up Medway A MAN is to clean the Tonbridge stretch of the Medway in a motor boat after noticing the river is ‘strewn’ with litter.

Paul Sochon says he first noticed the litter after taking up canoeing as a hobby during lockdown.

He said: “Having recently taken up canoeing, with what appears to be the rest of the UK, I couldn’t help noticing the amount of river bank-side litter strewn along the stretch from Tonbridge flood barrier to Porters Lock.”

With the help of his brother in law, Paul plans to patrol the river collecting plastic bags, dog waste, bottles and other refuse today [Wednesday September 9].

HELPING HEROS Matron Mary Frere of Kent and Sussex Hospital report that ‘bullets and shrapnel fell like rain’.

He wrote: “It caused us much concern as we were right underneath it – bullets and shrapnel fell like rain – low trajectory anti-aircraft shells came perilously close and exploded overhead.

“We had Polish pilots from the 303 Squadron who were charming but quite impossible! They were excellent pilots but with one burning ambition: to kill the enemy and they did.”

Crashed He continued: “We had many RAF Pilots admitted – one suffered bullet wounds – when they brought his parachute it was like fine lace riddled with bullet holes – one brave airman turned white when he saw it.”

Squadron 303 was one of two Polish squadrons to fight during the battle, and are now recognised for their incredible fighting prowess and ‘their unsurpassed gallantry’, as head of RAF Fighter Command Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding put it.

Dr Grasby added: “Despite being in ‘bomb alley’ we were not hit by anything big.

“But lots of incendiary bombs fell and many failed to go off as they were filled with sand. I

had one opened and inside there was a small bit of paper with ‘from Czechoslovakia’ on – those braves Czechs had duped the Germans at no small risk to themselves.

“I was standing outside my office when a Dornier bomber passed just feet over the Gynaecological wards and crashed in the woods – it was an eerie experience watching a huge swastika glide above the hospital.”

Kent and Sussex Hospital’s Matron Mary Frere reflected many years later on the damage.

She said: “We had things up and running quickly of course – we had no choice, but most people were angry at the loss of cocoa which had been destroyed in the kitchen stores – I remember a Porter

Improve Tonbridge Council have agreed to pick up any bags Paul and his brother in law collect during their motorboat litterpick.

The stretch of the river is a popular place for canoeists, who often take the 29km to Maidstone. The rest of the river is not accessible due to its tidal nature.

Paul said: “With the increase of leisure and pleasure seeking river traffic, it is clearly a good thing to keep on top of the aesthetics and hygiene of the river.

“I hope showing this will encourage others to take home their rubbish, or indeed pick up some litter when passing if able.”

He continued: “I have also, on the back of the increase in lockdown river use, made suggestions to the local councillors to improve the Tonbridge river slip and access at Lower castle fields car park to improve the image and use of the river – which is currently very much outdated.

“Updating this area and facility would in my opinion bring much sought increased and desired visitors to the town and high street.”

This month Oxfam launched its Second Hand September campaign which encourages people to purchase pre-loved items instead of brand new. Here Charlie Bond explains why she’s saying yes to second hand, and why it could be time to reconsider your shopping habits too...

THIS year has been a funny old time for shopping, with more of us moving to purchasing online to get our retail therapy fix, and loungewear quickly becoming our sartorial style due mainly to being in lockdown for so long.

We’re also starting to get savvier about what we’re buying too - if there’s one thing a pandemic and a recession can confirm, it’s that we don’t need quite as much stuff.

This mindset bodes well for this month as Oxfam has launched its Second Hand September campaign - encouraging consumers to only purchase pre-owned items for 30 days.

As someone who adores a pre-loved purchase, it’s a campaign I’m happy to get on board with.

At present, around a third of my wardrobe is made up of charity shop, second hand and vintage finds, and I love nothing more than finding pieces that are a little bit different. But, it’s not just the one-offs that make second hand shopping so worthwhile, it’s also the sustainability factor.

1. Mind, Tunbridge Wells What this charity shop lacks in size, it makes up for in stylish donations. Expect to see the likes of Reiss, Jaeger, Joules and more on the rails.

2. Heart of Kent, Tunbridge Wells Not only does this charity shop usually have some great finds, it also boasts a stylish aesthetic Mary Portas would be envious of.

3. Age UK, Tonbridge This is a great little charity shop where I’ve had lots of success finding fabulous items, including an Alice Temperley jumpsuit!

4. Hospice in the Weald Some of my best charity finds have come from Hopsice in the Weald’s stores - they have locations in Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Crowborough, Cranbrook and more. Their Camden Road site also sells second hand wedding dresses, and is well worth checking out if you’re a bride to be.

The term ‘fast fashion’ has become evermore prevalent over the past few years, but what does it mean? In short, it’s the term used to describe trend-led clothes produced for the mass-market, so the items sold in most High Street stores.

And, while buying these clothes isn’t a bad thing per se, (let’s be honest, who doesn’t love an H&M fix?) the issue comes with the speed in which we discard these items and move on to the next trend.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s guilty of snapping up summer’s ‘It’ dress, only to fall out of love with it before the sun’s even set on the season. And while I always donate the items to charity or sell them on, it’s still not a perfect solution to an ever-growing issue.

Environmental Impact Fast fashion has its place in our wardrobes, but it’s also fast becoming a problem. According to Oxfam, every week 13 million items of clothing end up in landfill, and the UK is responsible for sending the same amount to landfill each year.

Buying one new white cotton shirt produces the same carbon emissions as driving a car for 35 miles, and it can take 20,000 litres of water to make just one pair of jeans and one t-shirt - to put that into context, it would take a human 13 years to drink the same amount of water.

All of this doesn’t make for a very happy wardrobe, but, if we can start to change our shopping habits then, over time, the effects of fashion needn’t be so damaging. Shopping second hand for a month is a good place to start, because our purchases immediately become more considered - it’s much harder to impulse buy, and you’re much more likely to seek out items you’ll really treasure.

Second-Hand Savvy Knowing where to start when it comes to buying second-hand items can be tricky, so I’ve put together these tips to help you suss the good from the too good to be true.

n Take the RRP at face value and don’t let a hefty original price tag sway your purchasing decision. If you love it and it seemingly has a huge reduction then great, but don’t let the price be your main deciding factor. n If you’re shopping on eBay, search by time ending soonest - you’ll often find real bargains where the auction is just about to end. I recently bought a dress for £1.99 because it only had a minute to go and no other bids.

Sunday evening is the best time to sell an item on eBay but not the best time to get a deal listings with obscure ending times such as late at night or a mid-week morning can yield a much more purse-friendly purchase! n Charity shops are a wealth of hidden gems but don’t get overexcited if you see a designer item.

Have a Google to make sure it’s legit, check the quality and most importantly, make sure it actually fits you. I made the mistake of spending £40 on a Diane Von Furstenburg dress in a charity shop once, only to get it home and realise the sizing was US rather than UK and it was miles too big. Right now you can’t try on items in charity shops, but most are offering returns. Check the policy before purchasing to avoid disappointment. n Speaking of charity shops, lots of them now have online stores too, which are well worth checking out, especially for designer items. n If you’re shopping for things like second hand designer handbags, make sure the seller is reputable and has all the paperwork to prove the item is real. Concern over second wave as government implements tighter Covid controls in Bolton THE Health Secretary has warned of a possible second peak of coronavirus following a ‘concerning’ rise in the number of cases.

Matt Hancock’s warning came as he imposed further restrictions in Bolton.

The Health Secretary said there were 120 cases per 100,000 in Bolton, which had already been under stricter lockdown measures.

He told the Commons: “I must therefore tell that House that, working with the local council, we’re taking further local action. The rise in cases in Bolton is partly due to socialising by people in their 20s and 30s, we know this from contact tracing.

“And through our contacting tracing system we’ve identified a number of pubs at which the

virus has spread significantly.

“We’re therefore taking the following action in Bolton starting immediately. We will restrict all hospitality to takeaways-only and we’ll introduce a late-night restriction of operating hours which will mean all venues will be required to close from 10pm to 5am.

“We’ll introduce urgently further measures that put the current guidance that people cannot socialise outside their household into law.”

The announcement comes after ministers and government advisers expressed concern over a ‘sharp rise’ in cases across the UK, especially amongst the young.

Matt Hancock said the ‘virus is still very much with us and remains a threat’.

He added: “Today’s ONS figures show that the weekly coronavirus deaths have dropped to their lowest number since mid-March and the latest daily number of recorded deaths is three.

“However, we have seen a concerning rise in the number of positive cases, particularly among younger people, and these figures serve as a salutary reminder that this virus is still very much with us and remains a threat.”

Government to break the law over Brexit A GOVERNMENT plan to override elements of Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal with Brussels would breach international law, a senior minister has confirmed.

The comment by Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis provoked a furious reaction, including from some Tory MPs, and followed news that the head of the Government Legal Department had resigned amid reports he was ‘very unhappy’ with the proposal.

Mr Lewis told MPs legislation to ensure Northern Ireland could continue to enjoy unfettered access to markets in the rest of the UK would breach international law in a ‘very specific and limited way’.

Downing Street has sought to play down the changes in the Internal Market Bill – to be tabled on Wednesday – insisting they were simply ‘limited clarifications’ to protect the peace process if they failed to secure a free trade deal.

But pressed in the Commons by the senior Tory MP Sir Bob Neill as to whether they were consistent with UK’s international legal obligations, Mr Lewis said: “Yes, this does break international law in a very specific and limited way.”

He said that the powers the Government was taking would enable ministers to ‘dis-apply’ the EU legal concept of “direct effect” – which requires the enforcement of EU law – in “certain, very tightly defined circumstances”.

He added: “There are clear precedents for the UK and indeed other countries needing to consider their international obligations as circumstances change.”

However Sir Bob, who chairs the Commons Justice Committee, said: “Any breach, or potential breach, of the international legal obligations we have entered into is unacceptable, regardless of whether it’s in a ‘specific’ or ‘limited way’.”

‘Point of no return’ warns Lloyd Webber

ANDREW Lloyd Webber has warned that the arts are at the ‘point of no return’ following the pandemic.

The composer and theatre impresario said it is economically ‘impossible’ to run theatres with social distancing.

He said the Government had given him ‘no satisfactory answer’ over ‘anomalies’, such as why people can fly on a plane but not attend the theatre without social distancing.

Lord Lloyd-Webber told the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee: “We simply have to get our arts sector back open and running.”

Britain is a ‘leader in world theatre’ and should be given the green light to ‘demonstrate how we can reopen’, he said, adding: “We are at the point of no return really.”

A JUDGE has handed a ‘manipulative, abusive and controlling’ man who ‘ambushed’ his ex-girlfriend and stabbed her to death with a kitchen knife after she ended their relationship a life sentence.

Paul Crowther, 36, from Batley, West Yorkshire, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of student Bethany Fields after being diagnosed with schizophrenia following her death.

Judge Tom Bayliss QC described Crowther as a ‘very dangerous man indeed’ as he ordered him to be detained in hospital as part of his minimum sentence of 12 years.

He said: “Bethany Fields did what she could to help him with his mental health issues but it all became too much for her to cope with and she ended their relationship.”

BRITISH-Iranian dual national Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe is facing a new charge, Iran’s state TV said, citing an unnamed official.

The report did not elaborate beyond saying that Ms Zaghari-Ratcliffe appeared yesterday [Tuesday, September 8] morning before a branch of the country’s Revolutionary Court in Tehran, where she was first sentenced in 2017.

But Hampstead and Kilburn MP Tulip Siddiq said she had been in touch with Ms ZaghariRatcliffe who told her she faces a new trial on Sunday [September 13].

The new charges come as Britain and Iran negotiate the release of some £400million held

by London, a payment the late Iranian Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi made for Chieftain tanks that were never delivered.

The shah abandoned the throne in 1979 and the Islamic Revolution soon installed the clerically overseen system that endures today.

Authorities in London and Tehran deny that Ms Zaghari-Ratcliffe is linked in any way to the repayment deal.

A SHARK has fatally mauled a surfer on Australia’s Gold Coast city tourist strip in a rare attack off a beach protected by shark netting.

The man, in his 50s, was brought to shore by fellow surfers and lifeguards at popular Greenmount Beach with leg injuries, Queensland state ambulance service supervisor William Houghton said.

Beaches Paramedics determined he was already dead on the beach, he said.

The death is only the second fatal shark attack off one of Queensland’s 85 beaches that have been protected by shark nets and drum lines since as early as 1962, the state government said.

The last fatal shark attack off a Gold Coast beach, 24 of which are now netted, was in 1958.

Shark nets are suspended from floats and run

parallel to beaches.

They are 186 metres (210ft) long and six metres (10ft) deep.

Sharks can swim under the nets and around their ends.

No details were immediately available about the shark.

A senate inquiry in 2017 found that Queensland shark nets create more harm than good.

The senate committee said nets give beachgoers a false sense of security while entangling and killing protected marine species including whales and turtles.

Australia’s last fatal shark attack was north of the Gold Coast near Fraser Island on July 4.

A 36-year-old spear fisherman died hours after he was bitten on a leg.

A 60-year-old surfer was killed by a three-metre (10ft) great white shark at an unprotected beach south of the Gold Coast near Kingscliff on June 7.

INDIA and China have accused each other of making provocative military moves and firing warning shots along their disputed border, despite talks to end the escalating tensions.

China said Indian forces crossed into territory it holds along the border and fired warning shots at a Chinese patrol in what it called a violation of their agreements.

India denied that and said the Chinese soldiers tried to surround one of their forward posts in a ‘grave provocation’, and also fired warning shots.

China described it as the first exchange of fire between the countries in 45 years.

The nuclear-armed rivals have been engaged in a tense standoff in the cold-desert Ladakh region since May, and their defence ministers met on Friday in Moscow in the first high-level direct contact between the sides since the standoff began.

China’s western military command said the incursion occurred on Monday along the southern coast of Pangong Lake in the area known in

Chinese as Shenpaoshan.

After shots were fired, Chinese forces took ‘necessary measures to stabilise and control the situation,’ the command said, in the statement citing spokesman Zhang Shuili.

It demanded the Indian forces withdraw and investigate the move to open fire.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian repeated that Indian troops were the first to shoot.

He said it was the first exchange of fire between the sides since 1975, despite the increasing tempo of recent clashes.

There was no word of casualties on either side.

The disputed and undemarcated 2,175-mile border between India and China, referred to as the Line of Actual Control, stretches from the Ladakh region in the North to the Indian state of Sikkim.

The two countries have been trying to settle their border dispute since the early 1990s, without success.

EasyJet cuts flights to Greece as it criticises UK’s Quarantine rules EASYJET has announced it is cutting flights following the Government’s decision to impose quarantine restrictions for seven Greek islands.

The UK’s largest airline said it will reduce its schedule as ‘customer confidence to make travel plans has been negatively affected’.

This means it will have flown ‘slightly less’ than the 40 per cent of pre-coronavirus pandemic capacity it previously said it would operate between July and September.

From 4am today [Wednesday, September 9] travellers arriving in England from Lesbos, Tinos, Serifos, Mykonos, Crete, Santorini or Zakynthos (also known as Zante) must selfisolate for 14 days.

This is part of the Government’s new regional approach to quarantine policy.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said that, should infection rates differ from their mainland countries, islands can be added to or removed from the quarantine-exemption list.

EasyJet chief executive Johan Lundgren said: “Following the imposition of additional quarantine restrictions to seven Greek islands and the continued uncertainty this brings for customers, demand is now likely to be further

impacted and therefore lower than previously anticipated.

“We know our customers are as frustrated as we are with the unpredictable travel and quarantine restrictions.

“We called on the Government to opt for a targeted, regionalised and more predictable and structured system of quarantine many weeks ago so customers could make travel plans with confidence.”

Markets The news pushed the low-cost airline’s shares down by around six per cent as markets opened in London on Tuesday morning.

Mr Lundgren is one of a host of aviation and travel industry leaders calling on the Government to commit to a coronavirus testing regime to reduce self-isolation requirements.

Gloria Guevara, chief executive of the World Travel and Tourism Council, said the regional quarantine policy is ‘just scratching the surface’.

Mr Shapps said his department is working on using testing to release people from quarantine earlier than 14 days.

Drop in footfall leads to poor sales for JD Sport JD SPORTS has warned that retail footfall remains ‘weak’ as cost rises caused by higher online sales weighed down on half-year profits.

The sportswear retailer said its pre-tax profits for the six months to August 1 slipped by 68 per cent to £41.5million.

Meanwhile, it posted revenues of £2.54billion, down from £2.71billion for the same period last year, after it was forced to shut its stores temporarily in March.

Peter Cowgill, executive chairman and founder of the retailer, said he has been encouraged by the performance of stores since they reopened, with positive trading in the first weeks of the current half-year.

“However, retail footfall remains comparatively weak and the recent strengthening of measures in many countries and the subsequent temporary closure of some stores reminds us that Covid-19 remains an ongoing challenge,” he added.

He told investors that the company now expects to deliver a headline profit before tax of at least £265 million for the current full year.

The company said it retained ‘significant’ sales during the period of store closures as customers moved online, and initial trading in stores after reopening was boosted by a ‘combination of pent-up demand and promotional activity’, but this was “generally short lived” as retail footfall remained weak.

Pound falls over Brexit uncertainty THE pound has plunged against the US dollar as fears over a no-deal Brexit intensified following the shock departure of the Government’s legal head.

Sterling tumbled 1.6 per cent to just over 1.30 US dollars – the lowest level for nearly a month and the steepest fall since the Black Monday falls seen in March, according to financial forecasters.

The pound was also down heavily against the euro, falling 1.5 per cent to 1.11 euros.

It comes after Sir Jonathan Jones, the head of the Government Legal Department, resigned amid reported anger over suggestions Boris Johnson is planning to override elements of the

Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.

His departure marks the latest in a string of resignations of top civil servants.

Experts warned the pound could be sent into freefall once again if the Prime Minister’s stand-off with the EU continues.

Sterling has enjoyed relative stability in recent months, but worries over a deal have returned to haunt the pound as the latest round of trade deal negotiations between the UK and the EU got under way on Tuesday.

Sterling also fell 0.9% against the dollar on Monday due to reports that Mr Johnson was looking to rewrite parts of the Withdrawal Agreement.

Taxpayers shouldn’t foot Fusion’s bill bailout of such magnitude for seven months of operation does not represent value for money and is not the interests of Tunbridge Wells taxpayers.

This is sadly yet another example of the failure of the Conservative administration at the Town Hall to manage our finances properly to add to the examples of the Amelia Scott and the debacle of Calverley Square.

It is time to say that if out-sourcing is not working for us, then the Council should explore all other options including bringing the leisure services so valued by residents back in-house.

In the current situation we are also very concerned about protecting local jobs given Fusion’s current financial position. Many leisure centre staff are not currently paid the real local living wage of £9.50 an hour.

If brought back in-house, a key priority is to ensure that all staff are transferred over and an end to poverty pay.

Changes show Councils hate motorists You published a letter from me about the High Street [September 2]. When I wrote if I was unaware that sensibly the council wanted the traffic to flow south.

However, someone from Kent County Council [KCC] then questioned the turn right sign and it was scrapped. Who pays this person to make such stupid prognostications?

If you get to the no turn right sign you just turn left and make a full swing round the roundabout a very short distance away.

We all are aware of how politicians and council workers hate motorists – just look at the mess created at Yew Tree Road, deliberately done, I was assured by KCC, but even the antis shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this piece of nonsense!!

Reverse the decision and the direction before any more craziness appears.

Luckily, as of yesterday, I can see no permanent signs so there is still time before someone uses the cost card.

We welcome new Lib Dem leader In answer to David Elliot’s letter on the Liberal Democrats [August 26], I am pleased to welcome Sir Ed Davey as the new party leader.

Ed has a wide wealth of experience as a coalition energy minister and spokesman on renewables, an MP for a South London seat, and former local councillor.

His greatest appeal to me is as a carer for his disabled son, and previously for his mother, who her nursed through a terminal illness as a young teenager with his brother.

Contrast this with the ‘Don’t Care’ attitude of Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Whether it’s elderly people and care home staff dying of Covid-19 through the lack of personal protective equipment, chaos and confusion on exam results, or condoning his personal adviser Dominic Cummings breaking the lockdown, when others have rightly resigned for less.

As for wining a ‘Get Brexit Done’ election, nine months on, Johnson hasn’t achieved a single trade deal or any other agreement yet with the EU. So much for the ‘easiest desk in the world’.

Back to school message from NSPCC Going back to school can be scary for children whatever their age and it can be an anxious time for parents too. School closures during the pandemic had meant that some children have not had the opportunity to visit their new schools and classes.

Children may have questions and worries about going back to school during Coronavirus and we’ve got advice to help.

With younger children, have conversations about what going to school might be like. You might walk a different way or start at a different time; the school might look different or the adults may be dressed differently. Ask your children about what they’re looking forward to most about going back to school and then manage some of their expectations. You can also try to readjust their bed times a week before starting school to get into a healthy routine.

For older children, encourage them to talk to a trusted adult about their feelings – this doesn’t have to be face-to-face, they may find it easier writing their thoughts down. Rolling news and social media can cause a lot of anxiety; remind them of the facts and explain what false or sensationalised information is. It’s important that they don’t take their mobile, tablets of other devices to bed as this may stop them sleeping.

WE IN the Tunbridge Wells Labour Party welcome the long overdue re-opening of our leisure centres this week but are concerned that the operator Fusion is using Covid-19 as cover for obtaining an unwarranted financial bail-out funded by Tunbridge Wells residents.

Whilst many leisure facilities across the country reopened in late July, Leisure Centres in Tunbridge Wells mysteriously did not.

Instead a period of protracted discussion has taken place with the operator seeking financial support from the Council. At the Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting on August 31, I challenged the plans for the Council to waive the management fee and provide a £420,000 bailout to Fusion in this financial year.

Labour does not believe that local taxpayers should be held liable for the costs of Covid-19 and the inability of the leisure provider to honour their contractual obligations.

Whilst we accept that the management fee could be waived, given that 70 per cent of this fee is recoverable from government, a further

Air pollution does cause asthma Victor Bethel’s letter (September 2) includes the unsubstantiated claim that 4,000 people per year died of asthma when he was young, whereas ‘only’ 1,000 per year now die from the disease annually.

As a retired GP practice nurse, I believe that any reduction in mortality is largely attributable to improvements in the medical treatments offered by our well organised NHS clinics, and that Archie Mitchell is quite correct in his assertion linking air pollution to increases in asthma and other illnesses.

Getting our economy back on its feet needs people in work SOCIAL justice is a passion for every Labour member and supporter, and of course many who are not political at all. Right now, we want employment justice and are campaigning for jobs, jobs, jobs.

Labour has condemned the government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic and the jobs crisis that will follow.

Britain has the worst excess death rate in Europe and recently published figures show that we are on course to have the worst recession too.

Throughout this crisis the government response has been too slow. They were too slow to engage with the emerging evidence about the disease, too slow in the lockdown and - despite claims about it being a ‘world beating system’ are failing on test, trace and isolate.

The recent exam shambles, the failure to address the looming eviction crisis, and constant policy U-turns show a government that is confused and doesn’t ‘get’ what is hurting ordinary people, of all ages, who are just trying to get through this difficult situation.

For most of us the most important way of ‘getting through’ is by having and keeping our jobs. This is why Labour backed government support for businesses, furloughing staff, and help for the self-employed. But now this support is being withdrawn too fast.

Across the economy announcements are being

made about massive job losses that will have a devastating effect on all of our lives. It is young people - starting out on their working lives – who will face the brunt of an unemployment crisis not seen since the 1980s.

Getting our economy back on its feet needs people in work, which is also the best way to keep all of us mentally healthy. This is why Labour is campaigning for a plan to fight for jobs, keeping workers healthy and COVID 19 safe, backing businesses and protecting our communities.

Protected We are asking the Government to back businesses by setting up a £1.7bn fightback fund to prevent firms going under and to save our high streets.

We want more support for self-employed people and those in the gig economy who have been left out of existing schemes. We need workplaces made safe, boosted sick pay, workers’ rights protected, and living wage payments for those who are quarantined. We need an end to the 5-week wait for Universal Credit.

JOB LOSSES The pandemic has seen thousands become unemployed skills and training opportunities to help young people and those who are having to switch industries.

In Tunbridge Wells we are already seeing the emerging of life after lockdown but there are too many shops and restaurants that are still closed and will not open again.

Locally Labour is calling for more leadership

from our council, and an ambitious green recovery plan. In a COVID 19 world we need to support people working at home, offices and shops, improve public transport, press for improved broadband, and concentrate effort on energising our industrial estates and high streets. We need to get on with this work urgently - starting now.

Nicolas Heslop has been Leader of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council since May 2012, and has represented the Cage Green ward since 1998. His career includes working in Parliament, Whitehall and for campaign groups promoting vocational education and training, such as apprenticeships. He is a regular at the Tonbridge Parkrun, now completing over 200 runs.

Tonbridge is open for business but driving investment is key DURING lockdown, so many local independent shopkeepers tried innovative ways to provide a service to residents, whether through home delivery and providing take-outs. Now they have been able to reopen fully again, we must play our part in supporting them, to maintain a vibrant High Street and local parades.

Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council has a great track record in supporting independent retailers. Through our shop front improvement scheme, 22 High Street businesses have received grant funding totalling over £60,000.

We have also rolled out a similar scheme to our local centres and parades, such as York Parade and Martin Hardie Way. Interest from retailers has been positive and it is pleasing that we are seeing business interested in investing in their shopfronts since the lockdown ended.

Getting through lockdown was a challenge for many. Over 1,500 local businesses have received grant support via the Borough Council, amounting to an injection of around £20 million into the local economy.

The Times recently reported my support for thetncard which launched this year. Across Tonbridge and Hadlow, 72 businesses are offering loyalty rewards (see thetncard.com) and it’s a scheme well worth signing up to.

So how can we play our part, as residents of this wonderful town? A small survey of retailers

in July showed that 44 per cent of those surveyed reported a drop in sales during the month and 31 per cent were worried about the future.

High Streets are also evolving in their offer. With an increased number of transactions online they are no longer just ‘retail centres’, but are now destinations where people go to get an ‘experience’, be it going to a park, having a coffee, visiting the gym or enjoying a meal out. Tonbridge retailers have responded to the new shopping environment, as the success of many shows.

Investment The next few months are going to very challenging for everyone, but I am determined that the Borough Council will work hard in supporting the economy.

Driving investment into the borough is key.

Having the sites available for businesses to relocate to is vital. We must protect existing industrial land to enable business growth and job opportunities. We cannot meet our housing targets on these brownfield sites alone, or there wouldn’t be the jobs for people living here.

We see this investment in our town right now at the old Colas site. Redundant for over 30 years, councillors unanimously gave it planning permission and the new Tonbridge Trade Park will be ready to go next year.

The 16 new industrial units will create hundreds of jobs on site and in the supply chain. This is just one example of this Borough bucking the trend as our national economy slows down.

Further north, in Aylesford, Panattoni – Europe’s largest privately-owned industrial developer – will be investing over £180 million to redevelop the former Aylesford Newsprint site for industrial, logistics, distribution and manufacturing.

The company forecasts its plans promise to deliver between 2,000 and 3,000 new jobs, adding more than £140 million annual economic value to the Borough and attract some of the

world’s leading companies as well as providing buildings to support the growth of local companies constrained by the lack of facilities.

It might be a little further from us in Tonbridge, but the benefits to the local economy will be felt right across the borough, including our town.

The Borough Council has a key role to play to provide positive support and advice. While we cannot force private businesses to make decisions, we have to create the best possible environment for business investment. Tonbridge is open for business and we will do what we can to keep it that way.

Return to School

In a letter to parents last term, I wrote that the day all the pupils and staff are back at Kent College will feel, for me at least, like crossing the finishing line having run a marathon. From experience, that feeling is one of both euphoria and exhaustion.

Our Prep School pupils have already enjoyed being back in school for the last two weeks of the summer term and it was wonderful to see them so happy to be with their friends and teachers again. Senior girls were not so fortunate with only Year 10 and Lower Sixth students able to come in at the end of June.

Pupils and teachers will undoubtedly have mixed emotions. I know that everyone is looking forward to coming back but they are bound to feel nervous and anxious. Whilst we have lost time in the classroom, unless everyone has the headspace and mindset to engage in effective teaching and learning, it will be futile to launch straight into the curriculum. With that in mind, here at Kent College, we will be investing time at the start of term to focus on coping skills and resilience building. It will be important for pupils to acknowledge the things that helped them during lockdown and to build on the positives. There will be time for re-building bonds and self-reflection too, by asking question such as ‘what have I learnt about myself?’, ‘do I feel differently about anything?’ and ‘what am I grateful for?’. We set up a buddy system before the

end of term and we have created a team of Sixth Form ‘Well-being Officers’, who will spend time with the younger girls, providing support and advice.

Going forward, we will be building on this initial work to help pupils develop their own coping mechanisms ‘toolkit’.

Life has changed and it is our responsibility to ensure that we do all we can to ensure that this generation of young people develop the resilience to make the change that they want to see in the world.

There is no doubt that this ‘Covid’ generation will have been deeply affected by their experiences and I think that they will be an extraordinary generation who will achieve great things.

The long haul of the marathon to get our pupils back to school is now over. We are now there and I am so happy the day has finally come.

The Mead School teachers were prepared to hit the ground running It's been a summer like no other with the formation of bubbles within bubbles and a steady stream of sink and sanitiser station installations!

Amidst all the pandemic related preparations it's been difficult to find a moment to reflect on the potential positives to come out of such a challenging period.

Perhaps this is that moment. For one, remote learning allowed our collective IT capabilities to be upgraded beyond our wildest imaginations.

Many of these online applications are now being carried through to our new normal.

More fundamentally though, this period must also allow for a new appreciation for the things we have perhaps previously taken for granted, most notably our close sense of community and broad curriculum.

It’s with great pleasure that we will welcome back these hallmarks of The Mead

this term as we return to be one family under one roof.

In hindsight, I am so pleased that we were able to deliver something that most could not last term as all Meadites enjoyed three weeks of full-time education with three year groups housed at satellite locations along the Frant Road and the remainder on-site.

This time with their peers and their teachers will prove crucial to hitting the ground running for the Autumn Term as they return to a full programme including PE, languages and the performing arts. It’s such a pleasure to see the children return and no member of the team will ever again take for granted the noise of happy children moving through our corridors.

Pupils back in 3D at Beechwood For three months the venue for our lessons was suddenly changed from a colourful, engaging, lively classroom to a computer screen. Teachers, being a resourceful and imaginative breed, adapted quickly to the technology and embraced this new learning platform to deliver online lessons.

As a teacher, I delighted in the use of the ‘mute all’ button – oh! why can’t this be manifest in reality when my own kids just can’t stop arguing over what to watch on Netflix. Other benefits of online learning, meant we only had to half dress for the busy day of teaching and the trip to the photocopier for a class set of worksheets was replaced by the convenience of another cup of tea from the kitchen – although trying to resist a dip into the biscuit tin was perhaps a trial worse than unclogging a paper jam.

Nevertheless, whilst celebrating these trivial delights, why did I feel unsatisfied at the end of the school day? It wasn’t the larger waistline that made me slump heavily in my seat, it was the lack of

personal interaction and feeling disconnected from the class even though we were together on the call.

From my long experience of teaching and observing other teachers, believe me, you can sense when you’re in a great lesson: there is a buzz, electricity, and those in the classroom are swept along by the collective energy and enthusiasm generated by the group.

The teacher moves around the room, prompting, probing, challenging. The really good teachers, those who are masters of their craft, can read the room and are highly sensitive to the mood of the class. Not just the words the pupils might say or the work they produce but all the subtle signals their senses can detect: a facial expression, the tone of voice, the body language, the look in their eye.

In great schools, the teachers take the time to really get to know their pupils and use all the signals to understand what makes them tick, to connect with them, and to know what will engage them. Lessons should not become lectures (often accompanied by PowerPoint), and a pupil should never be just a face in the crowd (of other faces on a screen).

At Beechwood Sacred Heart School, we focus on getting to know the individual so that we can get the best out of each pupil; a task made very difficult using only a webcam.

Which is why we are very excited to welcome all our pupils back to school for the new academic year. We look forward to seeing the pupils in person, bringing life and energy back to the classrooms: where pupils and teachers can interact and work together effectively, thankfully making redundant that repeated plea heard throughout the period of school closures asking pupils to ‘put your cameras on, please’. Claremont School given the Green Flag As a new school year begins, and the effects of lockdown have left us wondering if life will ever be quite the same again, we reflect on what we, as a school, achieved in a year before anyone had uttered the word ‘pandemic’.

Inspired by Greta Thunberg’s work and remarkable address at the U.N summit, pupils from Year 7 and 8 decided to launch the Claremont Eco Store and what we believe is one, if not the first of its kind in a school. Working with charity onetreeplanted.org, the children used their profits to ‘plant’ trees in areas of the world most in need, and by February, over 225 new trees were donated to Kenya and Australia.

Meanwhile, pupils up and down the school worked alongside a determined band of young ‘Eco Warriors’, to drive numerous other initiatives to educate and empower the whole school community to play their part in safeguarding the environment.

Eco issues were addressed in Science, Art, Maths and even French, where a residential trip included a visit to the Nausicaa Sealife Centre in Boulogne and the chance to learn more about the problem of plastic pollution in our oceans. Older pupils researched the world of Fairtrade as

part of their Geography curriculum before hosting their own all-school assembly.

Global citizenship was highlighted during Fairtrade Fortnight, when the whole school took part in the 90kg Rice Challenge to show solidarity with rice farmers in Malawi.

Beach cleans at Hastings and litter picks around the school grounds became a regular part of ‘Warrior work’, and our ‘Switch off’ Week encouraged everyone to turn off unused electrical appliances at home as well as in school. The recycling of paper, card, plastic and batteries continued throughout the year and the school dining room became a focus of eco activity ahead of the ‘The Great British Spring Clean’. By Easter, the Newspaper Club produced a special Eco Edition of the school Magazine to recognise and celebrate the ongoing work of the Eco Warriors and school community.

At Claremont we have been on a journey to embed principles of sustainability in all that we do. The children’s efforts were finally recognised in July of this year, when the School received the much coveted, Green Flag Award. But this is just the beginning...

Record year for Tonbridge boys GCSE results: Tonbridge boys make it a record year Boys at Tonbridge School once more achieved an excellent set of GCSE and IGCSE results. How record high house prices are affecting the local housing market Industry experts say house prices across the UK are now at an all-time high. The Times speaks to local estate agents to see how the price boom is affecting the Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge housing markets

T

HE cost of a house in the UK rose by a little over £3,000 in August as the property market hit new highs, according to Nationwide.

The building society says house prices rose by 2 per cent to £3,188 –the highest rise in a single month since February 2004, when prices jumped 2.7 per cent.

The mortgage lender says that an explosion in demand since lockdown restrictions have lifted has boosted the market significantly.

Nationwide chief economist Robert Garner attributes some of the demand to ‘behavioural shifts’ and said around 15 per cent of people surveyed were considering moving as a result of lockdown.

In Tunbridge Wells, the average price for a home has increased £5,713, from £490,176 last year to £495,889, according to property website Zoopla.

Tonbridge has seen a similar rise in prices with an average property rising in price by £3,031 from £404,626 last year to £407,657.

Zoopla also reported that homes nationally are typically selling in 24 days – 12 days quicker than the same period a year ago.

One estate agent in Tunbridge Wells has reported properties selling ‘very rapidly’, some selling in just a day.

Bradley Mackintosh, who runs Tunbridge Wells based Flying Fish with his wife Natalie, said: “We’ve had properties selling very rapidly in the last month, it’s actually been hard to keep up.

“Just last week, we listed two properties that both went on sale the following day for the asking price.”

Mr Mackintosh continued: “Much of the demand we’re seeing is coming from people who rent in London, and are now considering moving to the town as flexible working routines become the norm.”

One of the key drivers of this demand in the area has been the Stamp Duty holiday introduced by Rishi Sunak, which has lifted the threshold for duty

Hannah Ellis of Savills said: “Of course there has been some pent-up demand due to lock down, but the stamp duty holiday has really encouraged people to buy now while they can save significant amounts of money.

“The market in Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge remains resilient and diverse, with many people coming not just from London, but from other areas

of the country and even internationally.

“We have great transport links, being just an hour away from London and this is an attractive area to live.”

David Johnstone, Head of Sales at Savills Sevenoaks branch, says in Tonbridge agreed sales have increased by more than 150 per cent compared to this time last year.

He added: “Priorities for prospective buyers have changed – more people want a house near or next to a green space, and are considering the fact that they may have the option to commute less frequently.

“People are looking for a place to call home, not a base for working.”

But Nationwide has warned that a massive rise in unemployment, which is forecast by most experts due to the Covid pandemic, could send the housing market back into a slump.

Estate agents in Tunbridge Wells remain optimistic, however. Flying Fish’s Bradley Mackintosh said: “Renters are more cautious obviously due to commitment anxiety, but overall I think the market will remain strong while the stamp duty holiday remains in place.

“There is even a chance this could be extended but we will have to see.”

While Savills’ Hannah Ellis added: “We expect demand to remain strong until the Christmas period, when it typically relaxes a little, and interest rates remain low.

“Tunbridge Wells will always be a strong market, both from internal and external demand.”

STEEPED IN HISTORY Tunbridge Wells’ Heritage Open Days have been able to go ahead this year, meaning that there is a panoply of walks, talks and chances to discover more about the town’s history. This Friday [August 11], you can meet local expert David Wakefield at King Charles the Martyr Church for a walk titled Two Churches, Four Chapels and a Burial Ground. The tour will demonstrate the spiritual legacy of the town’s previous residents, as well as the evident divisions between the Church of England and non-conformist chapels.

“It’s been so good to hear applause and laughter from an audience again” The EM Forster Theatre in Tonbridge has started to host live productions once again. Eileen Leahy talks to its manager Kat Portman-Smith about what it feels like to be staging a long-awaited comeback...

Can you please talk us through the timeframe of when and how you were told you could start to host performances again?

Throughout lockdown we’ve been preparing for how the theatre could open with measures in place so as soon as the government announced in July that we could host outdoor theatre we were good to go. In August the announcement came that we could have live performances with social distancing in place which has allowed us to plan for opening in September. We are in a very fortunate position that as the theatre is also Tonbridge School’s Drama Department the building is open, and the school is very keen for the community to have access to the theatre in a safe and controlled way.

What was the first performance hosted by the theatre post lockdown and what were the logistics involved in getting it put on?

The first show we hosted was local youth group The Talentz. They should have performed their musical ‘Joseph’ at Easter but we moved it outdoors at

the end of August. Debbie King, who runs The Talentz and I worked closely together to ensure that both the cast, staff and audience would be kept safe.

This involved lots of risk assessments, measuring of two metres and plenty of hand sanitiser!

When the heavens opened during the recent Talentz performance you were able to move inside - was this fairly easy to execute?

YOUNG TALENT The Talentz put on their version of Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat already for having shows indoors we were able to make this change quickly and safely, if there is something we have learnt over this period it is how to adapt quickly to an ever changing situation. As the show had been rehearsed on Zoom and then in small social distanced groups they were in a great position to quickly adapt from outdoors to indoors.

And tell us a little bit about The Handlebards bank holiday show. . . how did it go and was it full?

It was great to have The Handlebards back, they are always such a joy and it was the perfect summer evening’s entertainment. Romeo and Juliet was sold out and it was so good to hear applause and laughter from an audience again.

Have you felt supported by your regular customers and are you seeing a steady rise in ticket sales now?

We’ve felt very supported by our regular customers and it has been lovely to get replies to

our update emails. Of course, some people are desperate to come back and others are more cautious. Our hope with our £5 film screenings during September and October is that people will make the step to come back and will feel

Have you felt support on a local level from other arts venues in the area?

This lockdown period has had a few positives and one of those is making stronger connections with other local arts venues, it really has been great to chat to other Theatre Managers and check in with what they are doing and also how they are. It is a difficult time for our industry so it is great to be able to offer support to each other.

Kat Portman-Smith reveals how the theatre is putting on a panto – OH YES THEY ARE! We are delighted to announce that we will be having a panto this year.

Beauty and the Beast our 2020 panto has been postponed to 2021 and in its place we have Robin Hood and his Socially Distanced Merry Men (Dec 18 – Jan 3).

We’ve worked closely with Wicked Productions to bring this socially distanced panto

to the stage. We have had to make some changes to make it safe and viable, the show will be 90 minutes straight through without an interval, it will be a smaller cast and crew to make it safe backstage as well as onstage. The cast will be social distancing throughout which has opened up some hilarious comedy

opportunities especially when it comes to the love interest! The audience will be social distanced at 1m+ and can pre order drinks so you don’t have to come to the bar. All the detailed information on how we are keeping audiences safe is on our website and tickets this year are a flat £19 for any show.

Celebrating the magic of musicals

The UK’s longest running musical theatre concert tour Beyond The Barricade is performing a one-off at The Beacon on September 13. Eileen Leahy finds out more about this exclusive alfresco show from its founder and West End star David Fawcett AT THE start of this year the team behind the hugely successful Beyond the Barricade stage show was looking forward to celebrating its 21st anniversary.

Having been established in 1999 by West End stars David Fawcett and Andy Reiss as a grand production featuring a marvellous medley of songs from musicals, a grand tour of Australia was planned in order to mark the 21 year milestone - but then of course everything changed due to the coronavirus.

Iconic However David, who now lives in Tunbridge Wells and has starred as Jean Valjean in the West End version of Les Misérables for many years, decided that in true showbiz style the show must go on – just here in the UK instead.

If you’re not one of the hundreds of thousands to have seen Beyond the Barricade somewhere in the world, then in brief it stars some of the principal performers from both the West End and Broadway’s most iconic shows performing songs from the likes of The Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, Hamilton, Lion King, West Side Story and of course Les Misérables.

In light of Covid-19 restrictions and not being able to tour Beyond the Barricade as normal, David’s alternative idea was to host a series of

garden party performances around the country which would conform to the necessary social distancing and safety guidelines but still allow him and his three fellow actors to perform.

The only one in Kent will be held this Sunday, September 13 at The Beacon on Tea Garden Lane in its stunning ampitheatre.

Only 60 tickets will be available for this intimate performance in order to allow for the relevant safety precautions says David, but he and his colleagues are delighted to be performing again.

“This will be our first ‘theatre’ show since March and we can’t wait to get back,” reveals David who is also its co-producer.

“While we have done a couple of picnic performances, it’s great to be able to perform the best of both worlds – to a seated audience, but outdoors!”

Appearing alongside David and Andy at The Beacon will be Katie Leeming who joined Beyond the Barricade after playing many lead roles in the West End including Eponine in Les Misérables.

Completing the quartet is Poppy Tierney who played Cosette in Les Misérables, as well as other major West End leading roles such as Mary Poppins and Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady.

How a government initiative gave chefs food for thought to bolster business Eat Out to Help Out has been one of the very few positives for the hospitality industry since coronavirus crisis hit. Eileen Leahy discovers how it worked and why some restaurants including James Tanner’s The Kentish Hare are continuing the incentive this month to stay in business

HEN Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the Eat Out to Help Out scheme earlier this summer few realised just how popular and vital it would prove to be for the food and drink industry and in turn the economy.

The idea behind it was to kickstart restaurants, cafés and bars back into life by offering diners, from Monday to Wednesday during August, a 50% discount off their bills. It wasn’t applicable to

Out to Help Out and when it officially finished at the end of last month HMRC reported that £336million had been claimed by café, bars and restaurants, for 64million diners.

With everyone from independents to nationwide chains signing up to the initiative it has been hailed as a huge success, effectively doing the job it set out to do: breathing new life into a much deflated hospitality sector and encouraging people to start socialising once again safely

Celebrity chef James Tanner who co-runs the popular gastro country pub The Kentish Hare in Bidborough with his brother Chris told the Times the reasons why they decided to keep going with Eat Out to Help Out. “We have decided to continue the Eat Out to Help scheme on Wednesdays during September to thank our loyal customers for all the support we have received since re-opening.”

James went on to add that there are more benefits to continuing on: “It is also a great opportunity for new diners to come and experience The Kentish Hare and to sample some new and exciting dishes. We wanted to keep the momentum running into the autumn whilst offering a Covid-safe dining experience.”

Ross Feeney, CEO of Tunbridge Wells Together agrees that the Eat Out To Help Out Scheme has helped to bolster local business and that residents of both boroughs should continue to support it.

“The scheme has been a huge success, and has really boosted the hospitality sector in the town centre. The challenge now is to ensure we continue to see people coming in and eating out.

“Our hospitality sector is still very fragile, with high costs and low margins, so I would encourage as many people as possible to continue to eat out as much as their budgets allow them to.”

Restaurant reopens and offers half price meals

By Jerome Bowman AFTER being shut due to the coronavirus pandemic, luxury hotel One Warwick Park’s restaurant The Bistro has reopened.

The restaurant, located in Chapel Place in Tunbridge Wells, had to close its doors along with all other hospitality venues in the UK in late March due to the spread of Covid-19 across the country.

Now following the implementation of new coronavirus safety measures, The Bistro has a brand new menu – and is offering half price meals to celebrate its reopening.

Having missed out on the Eat Out to Help Out scheme, The Bistro is providing diners with 50

per cent off main meals when booking an evening table for tomorrow [September 10] or Friday.

With room for 39 diners, social distancing measures include stylish Perspex screens between tables to allow customers to eat in safety.

Certification The opening of The Bistro comes after One Warwick Park itself started welcoming guests on September 1 after ‘months of hard work’.

Accredited with Visit Britain’s ‘We’re good to go’ safety certification, the hotel has taken a number of measures including deep-cleaning its 39 rooms and function rooms.

The team at The Bistro hope to bring back its afternoon teas later in the year.

Head Chef Dan Yardley said: “Following six months of closure, we are delighted to have reopened our restaurant, offering a fresh new menu in relaxed, safe surroundings. We look forward to welcoming back guests, old and new.”

Light-bites and locally sourced dishes are on the new menu, which has kept traditional pub favourites such as fish and chips and the signature One Warwick Park burger, as well as new additions including crispy fried squid and chargrilled butterfly chicken breast.

Diners can also enjoy a drink before or after their meal at the bar.

Operations Director for the hotel Martin Garner said: “The reopening of our new restaurant is the first a number of new initiatives and developments at One Warwick Park Hotel, we hope to be able to share further details of our exciting plans in early October, please watch this space.”

The Peak District pub with rooms

where you immediately feel like a local It’s one of the UK’s most popular hiking spots. But the Duncombe Arms is proof you can still find calm corners to relax, says Sarah Marshall.

VEN on a warm evening in a pub garden, when spirits are rising as the sun is setting, social distancing is respectfully observed. It’s a reflection of the world we live in

right now.

Yet there’s always one rebel, an individual who refuses to follow the rules by ramming and rubbing into everyone’s personal space. Under normal circumstances they’d immediately be evicted, but not on this occasion. Because staff at the Duncombe Arms have learned to tolerate this regular – even if he is a black-nosed sheep.

A bundle of shaggy wool wrapped around two curled handlebar horns, Sidney is a local celebrity in the village of Ellastone on the Staffordshire and Derbyshire border, not far from the Peak District National Park.

“My children bought him as a birthday gift,” says landlord Johnny Greenall, whose unconventional pet trails behind him like a puppy dog.

The prized Swiss breed occasionally drops in to make a cameo appearance at the popular country pub on a Saturday night, although this year, he’s lucky to find a space.

Since Johnny and his wife, Laura, revamped the historic property in 2012, they’ve cultivated a loyal following. The surge of staycations this summer has seen their popularity rise.

But as crowds descend on more famous corners of the Peak District, the Greenalls have maintained peace and calm in this pocket of countryside.

“Walk up to the Weaver Hills and there’s nobody,” says Laura, speaking about the southernmost outpost of the Pennine Hills.

“We’re so lucky to have that.”

Although originally from Yorkshire, it was fated the former chef should end up here. But it wasn’t until she and Johnny were preparing to purchase the 19th century inn that they realised its stone façade bore her family coat of arms. “My mum’s maiden name was also Duncombe,” she reveals.

Part of the Greenall brewing family empire, Johnny’s path into the pub business was equally well paved – although photos and newspaper cuttings in a cosy snug bar reveal a passion for horse racing. “I was too tall to be a professional,” he jokes, “but I’ve ridden many of the best racehorses.”

The couple’s personality resonates throughout the Duncombe, and they can usually be found serving customers most days. Ten bedrooms in the new-build Walnut House have been designed to feel homely, featuring toiletries from Bamford (Lady Bamford has a family farm in Staffordshire) and original artwork available for guests to buy (Laura’s friend owns a gallery).

In spring, the Greenalls also open up the 12 acres of restored woodland garden surrounding their nearby Wootten Hall Estate.

On a tour, Johnny shares stories about the origins and monkey puzzles and dinosaur trees, and whispers gossip about Jean-Jacques Rousseau who spent a couple of summers here and composed part of The Confessions in a grotto on this site.

“Fans still make a pilgrimage to come here,” Johnny tells me.

Swiss philosophers aside, there’s plenty more to contemplate in east Staffordshire’s meadows and hills – from granite outcrops to historic market towns and, of course, a healthy population of charismatic sheep.

THREE GREAT HIKES TO TRY… The Roaches This rocky ridge above the Tittesworth Reservoir is a well-known spot, but there’s still enough space for hikers to hide amidst the craggy outcrops. Climb to the top for a Lion King moment, surveying a green kingdom melting into the sky and spotting the peaks of Snowdon on a clear day. There are two gritstone outcrops to scale for panoramas: Ramshaw Rocks and Hen Cloud. At the top of The Roaches sits the dew pond, Doxey Pool, and there’s also a former hunting lodge wedged into the rockface. Lud’s Church, a moss-covered chasm, is a few minutes’ walk away.

HOW: From Leek, head towards the village of Upper Hulme where there’s a starting point for the walk.

Dovedale Placed in the 19th century, a series of stepping stones cross the River Dove, creating a popular attraction for families. But aside from the entertainment of hopping over rocks, the scenery is superb: the river winds through a limestone valley, where fungi, ferns and wildflowers cover steep slopes. Although the

stones can be busy, fewer people walk to Ilam Park. Sitting below flat-topped hill, Thorpe Cloud, the postcard-pretty village features alpine houses and shafts of two 1,000-year-old Saxon crosses in its churchyard.

HOW: Either park at Ilam or use the postcode DE6 2AY to find a designated car park for the Stepping Stones. The walking route is well signposted.

The Manifold Track Follow a former narrow gauge railway route, where yellow locomotives modelled on carriages from India trundled in the early 19th century.

One railway worker famously referred to the stretch as “a line that starts in the middle of nowhere and ends up in the same place”. A tarmacked path through the valley makes it possible to either walk or cycle along a trail which follows the ‘many folds’ of the Manifold River. A short, steep walk from Wetton is Thor’s Cave, a karst hollow shrouded in ‘dragon’s breath’ most early mornings.
