By Katie Harris GARDEN waste collection will become a paid-for service in Tonbridge if cost-cutting proposals are approved. Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council (TMBC) is considering joining Dartford and Tunbridge Wells authorities in merging bin collections under a new, single operator – a move that would save £3million annually. This would enable residents to have their glass recycling collected from the kerbside for the first time from March 2019. But residents would have to pay an annual fee to ‘opt in’ to have garden waste collected fortnightly. This service has been provided free of charge.
Food waste The cost of this new brown bin has not been announced, but judging by the precedent of other councils adopting the policy, it would be around £30. The scheme would also include a new food waste caddy to be collected weekly. Councillor David Lettington, Cabinet Member for Street Scene and Environment Services, said: “Adding glass and plastics recycling to our kerbside service will be great news for our residents. He added: “We are on schedule to begin the tendering process for the new contract in December.”

Council staff clock up thousands of pounds extra with ‘over the odds’ mileage claims By Andy Tong andy@timesoftonbridge.co.uk CRITICISM has been levied at Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council [TMBC] for overpaying its staff by almost 50 per cent for petrol allowances. It is one of four local authorities across Kent – along with Sevenoaks, Shepway and Ashford – that have been providing expenses of 65p per mile. The official rate
suggested by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs [HMRC] is 45p per mile.
‘No local authority should be paying more than HMRC’s approved rate’ Last year, the decision to pay above the recommended rate cost the council, which means the taxpayers across the borough, more than £20,000 in extra expenses.
The revelation comes despite TMBC facing a budget deficit of £1.6million, which it says is leaving its provision of essential services severely stretched. The data has come to light from a survey of all councils in the UK conducted by the TaxPayers’ Alliance, a campaigning group ‘dedicated to reforming taxes, cutting spending and protecting taxpayers’.
