Tonbridge in running for award as Kent’s Inspiring Dementia Friendly Community

THE FUTURE’S HERE Tonbridge Daily launches its latest town calendar Page 2

THE town has been nominated for the Most Inspiring Dementia Friendly Community (DFC) award in Kent at the end of this month. Tonbridge DFC began its campaign to raise awareness of dementia in April 2015, and has recruited more than 400 ‘dementia friends’ among local businesses and organisations. The driving force behind the movement is Chris Parker, Managing Director of Abbey Funeral Services in the High Street. Her firm has also been put forward for the Dementia Friendly Company award.

Awareness Chris says: “I’ve worked very hard to raise awareness and encourage business to work towards being dementia friendly, and I thought I really ought to be blazing the trail. “Some examples of the success we’ve had are Inspirations Hair Salon, Castle Cars taxi service, Clarke Williams insurance brokers and Warners solicitors.” She adds: “In fact if you make your business dementia friendly then you have covered 99 per cent of all other frailties and disabilities, even by making little changes that help with things like difficulty of mobility.” Inspirations turn their chairs around because clients might not recognise themselves in the mirror. Castle Cars have trained drivers to attend to the needs of more vulnerable passengers. Full details on page 8

Massive march through town as public tries to save green space By Andy Tong andy@timesoftonbridge.co.uk MORE than 450 demonstrators marched down the High Street on Saturday (September 23) to protest against the council’s plans to sell off River Lawn and property in River Walk to developers. The throng chanted ‘Keep River Lawn Green’ and ‘Not For Sale’ and carried a plethora of inventive placards as they marched from Quarry Hill up the High Street and congregated at River Lawn. Lucy Athey addressed the crowd on behalf of the campaigning group Keep River Lawn Green [KRLG], and she was interviewed on

BBC South East’s television news. In her speech she called for a referendum and asked: “How can it be that in 2017 our council is recklessly trying to sneak the sale of our publicly owned spaces through without even asking our opinions?”

‘What an amazing spirit and tenacity of conviction the people of Tonbridge have’ The fate of River Lawn will be decided at a meeting of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council’s six-person Cabinet on October 11. The official body’s constitution is highly

unusual in that such crucial decisions about publicly owned land do not have to be voted upon by all members of the council. The former CAB building is included in the proposals, while the old Teen and Twenty club on River Walk has already been sold to make way for a new medical centre. Sarah Spence, Councillor for Vauxhall Ward, was one of several representatives who offered support to the march. Cllr Spence praised ‘a fantastic turnout demonstrating with such strength – what an amazing spirit and tenacity of conviction the people of Tonbridge have’. She added: “Thank you for the pride you Turn to page 2
