Teen and Twenty car park will be closed until 2020 THE development of the new super-surgery on the site of the Teen and Twenty Club will see the adjoining car park being closed to the public for up to two years. Assura were planning to begin construction of the GP practice tomorrow [November 1] but the completion of the Agreement for Lease between the developer and the Tonbridge Medical Group is awaiting final resolution. The removal of one of River Lawn’s horse chestnut trees, situated on the boundary of the site, will be one of the first tasks to be carried out. Assura has said it will retain the trunk and employ a chainsaw carver to create a bespoke artwork piece, which will be donated to a local community organisation or school.
Compound The car park on River Lawn Road, which contains spaces for more than 20 vehicles, will be occupied as a site compound. The work is due to be completed by March 2020. But if construction is delayed, a further year of occupation will be permitted. Once the new building has been finished, the car park to be restored to public use, except for five spaces which will be leased to Assura. Adrian Stanfield, director of central services and monitoring officer for Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, said: “We are erecting notices to advise the public that the car park will be closed for an extended period. “The ticket machine will, however, remain accessible, as there are additional on street spaces that need to use the machine to purchase tickets.”

High Street and small businesses need help to boost local economy By Andy Tong andy@timesoftonbridge.co.uk THE council has put its ‘economic regeneration strategy’ for the next four years forward for public consultation as it tries to boost the corporate profile of the borough – and the town. The publication of the draft document coincides with the Chancellor Philip Hammond announcing a £1.5billion boost to high streets in the Budget. Small retailers are set to benefit from £900million in business rates relief and £675million which will be invested in town centres and transport links. Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council has identified a number of areas where the local economy could be improved: n Making more commercial premises available n Bolstering infrastructure to meet future expansion
n Providing more information and advice for businesses n Offering career guidance and opportunities to improve skills n Making the High Street more of an ‘experience’ for visitors n Raising the borough’s tourism profile n Helping rural companies and saving village stores
‘We cannot rest on our laurels and this new strategy will give us the focus we need’ The draft strategy states: “Despite having a relatively successful and resilient local economy, there are a number of challenges that the borough faces, and which need to be addressed if the area is to continue to enjoy a high degree of prosperity.”
The report notes that despite ‘an extremely entrepreneurial spirit – with business creation being very high – the survival rates for these businesses is not as high as it could be’. “Only around 60 to 65 per cent of businesses in the borough last three years or more. Whilst a high business churn is not always necessarily a bad sign, it does indicate that there is a need for greater business support and advice.” It adds that the provision of facilities for businesses is not sufficient to meet the growing demand, ‘and yet at the same time, existing commercial premises are being lost to residential conversions, especially in Tonbridge’. The council also recognises an evolving landscape for the traditional workforce: “In a changing world, where automation is replacing some lower skilled work and generating new opportunities, it is
